So basically there's this guy, that work with us that relocated from a small village south of Italy to the city where we have the HQ.
So after a while this guy has found a girlfriend here and after few days we discovered that he never had sex in his life. you may ask, how did you discover it? Yes, basically he disappeared for a week, his phone was off, no slack, no Facebook, nothing. We couldn't contact him in any way. After a week he gave a call to our cto saying sorry about what happened and explaining that he spent the whole week having sex with his girl, day and night. This story has also a good end because he still has his job.31 -
A couple of years ago, I was working in a computer shop as a "technician", I was 15, first job I ever had.
One day an elderly lady came into the shop, probably 50'ish, she and her whole family "suffered" from electromagnetic radiation, and the mother had the worst suffering. She complained about her TV box that just had died.
I accept the tuner and see it's wrapped with 10 layers of aluminium foil, with a tiny hole for the IR receiver.
The whole box smells like burnt electronics, and the foil gets darker for each layer I unwrap. I try explain to her that the box gets warm and overheated by wrapping it like this, and she's lucky that it didn't catch fire.
I further explain to her that she will not get a new box, because the warranty does not cover _this_. The mother tells me she has to wrap it like this, because she gets headaches when she's watching the news.
She then proceeds to go into a rage mode and gets her whole family into the shop, where all of them starts yelling at me, the younger kids start throwing stuff down from the shelves and touching the TVs with sticky fingers (literally, sticky, like yuck!).
Unsure what to do, boss is in a meeting, and my colleague is busy in the back.
So I calmly tell them that in this building there's 4 wireless networks, 3 wireless phones, high voltage cables run in the wall behind me, there's factory tracks 20 meters behind the building, next door business is an electrician, you're standing in front of wall with 30-40 TVs, 5 HDMI splitters, 3 TV boxes and a Blu-ray player. And they've all been standing in front of them for the last 10 minutes.
They all suddenly feel really sick and run out of the store, never to be seen again. From that day, I decided I'll never work in a shop again, and pursued my dreams to become a developer.
TL;DR: Family is "sensitive" to electromagnetic radiation, almost put burnt down their house because of stupidity, yelled at me. I decided to pursue my dream as a developer.16 -

User: Sorry, i can't upload a picture for my profile. It shows a popup saying that i already uploaded it.
Me: it's because you uploaded.
User: Awesome man, thanks.4 -
I'm dreaming to send homework to my C++ programing lecturer full of strange #defines and make the code compilable, runnable and working well
He would feel the black side of cpp😈😈😈20 -
Today, after two hours of debugging, my girlfriend called me to break up.
Then my backend started giving strange errors about some unmet dependencies.10 -
I'm 40 years old today. Feels strange.. and getting older as a developer is not an advantage at all. But I got a wonderful little baby, a wife and a job I (almost always) like! So happy birthday to me 😊15

"This dump is taking forever" - things that sound strange outside of a dev environment.
What are some other good ones?34 -
Just broke up with my ex-girlfriend after 2 years of relationship. This might sound strange but scrolling after scrolling on dev rant is actually helping me getting through this situation!14

I mean, I can't find a cable to use!22 -
I just fixed a bug with the ticketname "Sometimes, There is a strange behaviour when opening the app on some devices"
Feeling heroic now8 -
I accepted the job for Machine Learning.
I got hired todo the back end.

My mom: "there's a virus in my phone! It says so when I open Chrome!"

Once upon a time while browsing his Instagram, a young and inexperienced boy found a magic realm called devRant.
He decided to hop on the cyberweb of interconected computers, aka. the Internet and found the gate to the magic realm.
Timidly he took a step forward and found himself surrounded by strange structures called Rants and Stories.
No knowing what to do, he now roams in this new and strange realm looking for some guidence and perhaps even friendship.27 -
I just changed a bunch of comments, log entries, and removed some blank lines from one of my controllers. Zero functional code changes. Everything worked before; now it runs only half the code, breaks, and throws strange errors.
Fucking hell.
Screw today.6 -
It's strange what you can learn when you have too much deadtime.
Last week I learned balloon twisting through youtube videos. A co-worker and I decorated the desk of a co-worker for her birthday.
I made her this balloon throne (from Game of Thrones). Notice that I was soooooo bored.
She loved it ^_^13 -
Since childhood I was extremely creative. At ~7 I took my family's laptop and started downloading level editors for Super Mario.
After that, I discovered a strange site to create games (similar to Scratch).
One month later the PC had too many malwares and adwares. 🤗1 -
I wonder, do you also sometimes take a tech book and read it like a novel?
Maybe I'm strange. It's just thrilling to read about a new problem and wonder 'oh my God, how will they solve it' - can't wait to read on 😅7 -
When you are in the elevator with like 20 people and everyone is looking at a white screen with ads and pictures and a blue tab bar in the top.
And i am the only one with the strange looking purple app and only english with no ads.
Time to stop twitter and facebook.8 -
Probably it will sound strange or slow to you but my ISP upgraded to optical fiber and now I got 50Mbps from 20Mbps that I had before. I downloaded 1GB file in 3min. I'm so fucking happy.15

Why is it angry? Or can you only use it when you're angry? Was the developer very angry while developing it? It's a mystery9

A friend got a "new" (several years old) pc from an other friend. The pc made strange noises, so I open it and found a little speaker connected to the USB pins on the mainboard. Not an USB speaker but a simple mini speaker with two cables (see the picture). Why would someone do this?16

Today I have opend a foreign project and noticed a weird bracket ending style.
All closing curly brackets are indented one level further to the right.
I've never seen that style before. Normally I am really agnostic about bracket styles.
I don't care. But this one is so strange and confusing that I wanted to know what you other devs think about it.17 -
As a developer, you are working with colourful text, strange syntax, alot of math, and all the time you know that you are not the best yet!1
-
For a developers ranting social media platforms, it sure seems strange that we can't format code snippets... 🤔
At least something like `foo(bar){}` would be awesome!3 -

Something strange just happened, activated Fail2ban on another server and instantly blocked me when I already had ssh session open >_>

Why does this keep on happening to me T_T18 -

I'm a web application developer and work for an abattoir.
On slow days I sometimes I go out and pick a cow, give it name, scan its ear/rfid tag, lookup what farm it came from and how much it cost, then monitor it passing through the various production lines.
Yup.4 -

I feel strange, because I don't have nothing to rant about... I work with awesome people, and my life is not so terrible... What the fuck I'm doing on devRant?
Uhm... maybe I'm the boss who everyone is ranting about...9 -
So, California, land of no rain whatsoever.
Until today, where it actually rained!
Also today, a weather applet for tmux started misbehaving. Suspicious.
Coincidence, I think not! Sure enough, stopping that applet from running fixed everything. Turns out, the raining icon breaks the terminal, for some strange reason.
And why had this not been discovered earlier? This had been the first time it had rained for at least 8 months, and I added this only 4 months ago. Thus, it had never had its time to shine.
Yay for strange encoding!
Anyway, I now have a new excuse; blame bad code on global warming.3 -
Just spent 3-4 hours trying every possible solution for fixing a strange bug. Turned out it was caused by a closing tag in the wrong place...4

Its strange how a space can change the meaning of a statement.

I've been taking a bunch of boot camp 'entry' type tests to do some research for the school I'm building - and these things are strange. To qualify, some of them want to make sure you can do basic algebra and others want you to be very comfortable with higher-order JS function type stuff - and then you get questions like this : /5
-
That strange moment an entire PHP project no longer throws any errors, warnings or notices and you don’t know if you should believe it or not.
It’s been a long day trawling the logs file by file, action by action, surely I’ve missed something or it’s just waiting to break like hell when I commit the changes. -
A customer was complaining that the twitter feed on their homepage was listing strange tweets containing curses. somehow a JavaScript variable was not assigned correctly and got a value of 'undefined'. because @undefined is an existing twitter handle the code did not crash and went on displaying the wrong tweets.2

The British summer results in restless nights and broken sleep filled with nightmares.
One particular dream last night involved my friends messing around with a ouija board and they begin asking in questions. I remain sceptical and tell them to ask it to reveal the solution to the issues I'm having retrofitting a legacy web app with a new design.
The board disconnected itself. Hell had no answer. -
I went to flwater.com and it is not a website about Florida's water.
It redirects to this change.org petition? It's incredibly strange. NSFW banner btw.21 -

It's 14:59 and my grandmother has just called me in for tech support I guess.

I bought my first VPS today. After years of hosting my email, websites, databases and backups services on my own physical servers both home and in real serverrooms.
Strange feeling, but it feels like something heavy was lifted from myself, I do not need to buy hardware if something fails.13 -

Not exactly a co-worker, but one of the devs from the client's team spent a few months working in our office next to us. He would always take a nap at lunch time and snore loudly, and eat an apple afterwards and it seemed to be impossible for him to chew with his mouth closed.
Whenever he had a cold and his nose got blocked he would still force himself to breathe through his nose, so it sounded something like a mix of darth vader and someone drowning.
He also lacked any notion of personal space, and would always sneak behind us to ask questions and then put his laptop right on top of our keyboards or in front of our screens and start talking while we still had headphones on. -
Waking up in the middle of the night with sleep paralysis. Thx brain. Fuck off.
Especially fun when hearing strange noices. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂9 -
Recently found a weirdest job in IT company.
The job description said you just don't need to know anything, but sometimes say some phrases like: "Who made this code, and I hate when it isn't made with framework" sitting in front of a laptop.
Someone is looking for fake programmer. I was astonished.
They said they have about four devs sitting in office and nobody believed then it is no problem, so they posted this to find couple of fake devs. Glasses and ugly sweaters is a must...7 -
At my first internship I always had to cleanup the lunch area (after the lunch of course) and they would leave everything... One guy even left the crusts of his bread and so I had to cleanup everything. But the same guy one time left the crusts of an crusty bread roll... I mean what, how? WHY?? Who would do something like this?12

I fell in love with Vue and Webpack! 😍😍😍
It is such a breeze to work with components and to be able to just change something and have everything instantly recompile and update on the webpage. I am actually enjoying doing the frontend more than the backend which is strange because I am a backend guy 🤣6 -

So a couple of days ago we noticed a strange behaviour with a playment plugin for an online shop of a client. We opened a ticket in the support center and got a response that basically said "Nobody ever reported this behaviour. Therefore this is not a bug."3

So this just happened. A friend whom I made a little project for came to me like "hey man that project thing just gives a white page". It's written upon the old version of a framework I'm still writing. After a few minutes I found out that it's failing to load all core modules. Turns out there was a file in the core modules directory with the .save extension. Never thought I'd have to take that into consideration in my code!
-
Me: ok let's actually start work on a project when I get home. Something small that I can finish, bin and be happy with, just need to clone my assets repo...
*Types command, nothing happens*
Hmmm that's strange, opens router config and sees it syncing at 0Mbps
*Mad World starts playing*1 -
My most ridiculous recruiter experience was the time he called me back to say to me that I'm too confident and... too good for the job. I was so confused ! I had no experience at all, and I was a very introvert person. What a strange way to say that I don't fit for the job.5

British summer, the glorious fortnight where outdoor temperatures rise to comfortable levels, the shorts come out, and we see the strange glowing fireball known as "the sun".
And in response, our office aircon is set to "arctic". I'm sat at my desk trying to code while wearing a jacket and gloves.2 -
Last night I had a very strange dream. I should point out in advance, all of this is fictional and none of it really happened.
I was looking at an answer I posted on Stack Exchange.. for the sake of argument, let's say it was Super User. I remember the question being about volume limiting, which is actually an issue I and many other iOS 14.2/14.3 users have been facing in the last few months. Apparently it has been partially addressed in 14.4.
In the real world I fixed the issue by jailbreaking the phone and unloading the healthd service, while in the dream that was the answer I had documented on Super User. In reality I have documented it in several other places, but not there.
Fast-forward a couple of days in the dream where the answer was posted, and I was now looking at a reply. I don't remember the exact details of it, but apparently in the answer I had posted something about my network.. a screenshot from the iPhone? And the comment on it basically said something along the lines of "your answer is shit, and you probably have a very basic internet connection with default settings". I was really upset by that, as my network is actually quite advanced (on account of being a sysadmin).
Then I woke up and realized that it was all just a dream...4 -
Not only Windows can show this "strange" error messages: Today I got this beauty while importing an SQL-dump.
(Translation: "Error on import: error on statement #1: not an error. Execution will be aborted and the db will be reset.") -
I find it very strange and telling when people tell me that a dev shouldn't "re-invent the wheel", "roll your own" or "leave it to the experts" while simultaneously promoting substandard own-rolled projects by other people that simply got popular.
Kind of a strange elitist double standard that encourages a bad mindset of "I can't be as good as them" and it's toxic.
If you wanna make your own framework / package / etc, just do it, it might even be better.7 -
I hoped I would write about other things than EU internet regulation... But I hoped wrong.
The new online antiterror regulation is flawed, too.
What will the new regulation change?
The EU plans stricter anti terror laws for online platforms. In a nutshell, reported terroristic content has to be removed in <1 hour> after reporting. While automated filters are not required (the EVP party and the EU commission wanted those, but couldn't get a majority in the perliament), but it is unclear how to fulfill the regulation without.
What is the current progress of the regulation?
The EU parliament approved the draft, the trialogue will begin after election. The parliament has to approve the final trialogue result again and might reject it then. The characteristics of the regulation might change, too.
Who (platforms) will be affected?
All platforms, "offering servicd in the EU, independent of their business address" (free translation from German).
Will there be exceptions (e.g. for smaller or non commercial platforms)?
No.
At the very first report, the platform will have 12h time.
What are the consequences of not following?
Regularly breaking the law _constantly_, up to 4%/of the total yearly revenue.
Sources?

I'm feeling empty. All my friends and roomates went home. But I stayed in hostel. I haven't touched my laptop from last 3 days. I'm just lying on bed staring at ceiling. I'm not even in a relationship, so I call my mother everyday to get the feeling of being loved.
This quarantine is strange. First few days I spent my time playing video games, watching Netflix, laughing at memes. But Now I'm feeling empty. Very strange thoughts are now occupying my mind. I'm sleeping 10+ hrs, and staring at ceiling or outside window most of the time. My room is a mess. Forget washing hands, I don't even feel like standing up to switch on lights.
I'm not saying I feel sad or depressed, I just feel very strange.20 -

Interesting password recommendation here...
Translation:
- A form with to fields: Surname and password.
- Below the form is a text: "For signup please enter your name and a password (e.g. your email address). With your name and password you can change your data anytime and may get access to the memberlist."
Bonus: There is a "help"-button (outside of the cutting) which even *recommends* the use of the email-address as the password!
Extra bonus: The password field is a normal text one.
IF THE EMAIL ADDRESS HAS TO BE SUBMITTED, WHY NOT JUST ADD ANOTHER FIELD OR AT LEAST LABEL THE FIELD CORRECTLY!
Update: After this form, you get to another form, to enter you email address...3 -

Saw lots of regret posts about being in dev field. Then why bother living that way?
Not like engineering, medicine or business management fields, I believe programming needs passion similar to art related careers like acting, music and painting etc. So if you don't have any passion for programming, you won't be successful or satisfy at all.
That doesn't mean it is all good and happy days for every passionate programmers. We sure have ****ed up days (probably more than other fields.) Seriously that's why we have devrants. No? But it doesn't reach to the point of regret to me.
Here our national programming language is probably PHP. The pays are lower than your part-time fast food chain workers. The internet speed is in kbs with 2 digits most of the places. Government doesn't give a crap about IT. No IP copyright laws and so on. I probably would earn more and live better if I were not running this IT business.
But hell yeah I never regret at all.1 -

Funny story...
Got a small college assignment based on Java and Cassandra(database). The database shell was running fine. Spent 5 days removing the random java exceptions and working on the basic connectivity, searched everywhere on Stack overflow and other forums for solutions and still no help.
So, I decided to write a program that would print only the output as I knew what would be the output when it will run. Took a screenshot of it and made up a cover story to tell my professor that I did it on a friend's computer.
But while I was taking a screenshot of the Eclipse with code window and output window, some random syntax errors popped up.(but they weren't syntax error).
So I created a new project and copied the pom.xml file and the code into the new one(I tried this one before and it didn't work). And there were no errors. So I took a screenshot of it with output of different file and opened a different file.
But then, don't know what came across my mind and I clicked on run just to see if this works, and it worked fine. And now I'm like.. WTF JUST HAPPENED!! -
Damn, summer is here, I go to bed at dawn and wake up in the afternoon... it's strange... I don't like it. I liked going to bed when it was still dark outside and waking up to a sunset :(2

My life was troublesome today, had to help a non programmer to run jar files.
The jar executed well from command line in Windows 10 but didn't work on double click.
Did all the tricks, registry edits, cmd commands and at last I found a miracle tool called Jarfix.
Just double click and all okay.
The root cause of the problem was 7zip.
This bug is reported in the Oracle bug reporting and they have closed it as " Will not fix" low-priority report.2 -
Question:
What was the stangest thing what you saw in other's code when you reviewed it?
I never reviewed a simple code, so I am curios 😮8 -
Working from home with a cat... hear a strange noise and turn my chair. Cat is now hanging on for dear life and looking at me with utter betrayal.
It seems she only wanted attention... always. Especially when I’m working.1 -

And it ends up with a one line change in the git commit.
Always a strange feeling.3 -
Does anyone knows why in c++ floats range from numeric_limits<float>::lowest() to ::max() and ::min() is just the lowest positive value instead the actual minimum? This strange naming convention just costs me an hour of my life that I'm never getting back...2

When you are about to pause your coding-job for one day to do all the stuff you do on your freetime. Like coding. We're super strange people...1

How did they manage to come up with such a bug? The only things there should be numbers or an arrow, not meaningless Hebrew letters.1
-
I like Ubuntu. The latest version went back to GNOME and I really like how it looks.
I get my work done with it. I haven't had any compatibility issues with it.
But for the life of me, I cannot understand why, in order to change the login screen background I have to edit the theme .css file.
You can change the lock screen from the UI and you can change the desktop background image from the UI but apparently if you want something other than the blandest lockscreen ever to have existed, you have to manually got into css files.
Seems like a ridiculous oversight really, but it still is very annoying.6 -
My office WiFi is freaking fast upto 25mbps, should I download Torrents using it. Is there a possibility that corporate networks are under more surveillance ?7

So I got bored and decided to drop some Easter egg cats into Google trouble reports because why not? Well I sent one off on regular Google Allo and it ran this search. None of my other cats did anything like this even with other black cats. Any ideas?2 -
Can't understand, programming in work (office) makes me so tired, bored, I just can't concentrate, programming at home is so fun, I can do it all night2

PMs are strange. I spend over a year to perfect a self optimizing, state agnostic End2End test with almost no flakyness and they're like "Yeah, nice". I write a frickin 15 line php script to display in which translation file a certain string is defined and they act as if I'd just walked over water.

Something really strange happened now, I received my 2-step login codes from Google from an unknown number and just codes, doesn't Google usually use this format: G-XXX-XXX
and have their name in the title?7 -

I've been feeling strange for some weeks now10 -
I have two servers, a work station and a laptop always running in a small room. It's normally "warm" but now when it's been 32+C (90+F) outside it's been hot. I even had someone at the door who wished to go into that room, there were something about a gold ring with strange markings. These were short fellows without shoes and very large and hairy feet.
I wouldn't let them in and then suddenly a skinny balding fellow jumps out of nowhere, stole the ring and run away.
Anyway... Strange day (or is the heat getting to me)1 -
I got an email from an owner that was a bit strange. It was a forward of an email he sent to someone else. At the top of the body he had written:
****BLIND COPY****
hahahaha
I shared with him the proper way to handle such a task :)1 -
That is strange. I have become developer at 27. Well, I 've decided to become a developer, to be honest, started to learn C++. I have tried lot's of things before: sale things, play bass guitar, copyrighting, driving a bulldozer. All reactions towards my choises was negative, and descision to become developer, programmer was like: "ok, do it"4

Wow... I should have done this sooner.
A recent rant had expressed that firefox had a strange "bug" (I'm convinced it's a feature) that would allow videos to continue playing even when one turned off their phone.
I finally got around to testing this and can i just say I'm euphoric right now!2 -
When date format is hard coded and application goes international. Application works ok until day turns 13. Error is seen a couple of days later, then it's the 1st again and everything is ok. Just to mention one of many strange errors. Just to make it harder, app works well if running in other countries that is using the same format. Daahh1

Made a root only app: enable/disable GPS, mobile data, airplane mode and etc. work on not rooted device(yes all these functions work too).
How: Desktop app which downloads cross-platform ADB drivers, unzips them, executes a few commands, deletes the drivers and voala.
P.S: I use local ADB TCP connection(yeah I ported a part of the drivers for java android) and write_secure_settings granted with 'pm grant'.
And everything is user-friendly with screenshots explaining how to enable ADB and how to click a 2 buttons.3 -

Kotlin
Look up the Kotlin Puzzlers presentations by Anton Keks, in which he shows the strangest behaviours of the Kotlin compiler. Bizarre syntax, strange results, bugs, etc. Some aren't even edge cases. And he's wearing a captain's hat.

Trying out Gnome 3 again just to see how things have evolved. How can something crash and freeze so often combined with strange slowness. I like GTK+ and other DE's using that, and a long time ago Gnome was a nice thing. Now it might look good in some aspect but in other aspects it is just strange how they have decided to do things and how often they change things between each release. And then, stop freezing and being so damn slow.3

Installing, updating or adding components to Visual Studio is so strange; there's no network traffic (after the "Acquiring" phase), not much CPU load and mostly low disk load. Yet the process moves more slowly than a Sophia Coppola movie.
How do they manage that? By inserting a Thread.Sleep(50) between every instruction?1 -
The manager get me a new framework for a project in iOS.

P.S any opinions on LastPass?10 -
It's really strange to me that display servers/window managers (Xorg, Wayland, etc) aren't locked to given desktop environments (GNOME, KDE, Unity, Cinnamon, etc). It doesn't make sense to me that they are separate and not optimized together.2

Huh. I must be going nuts.

That moment you find out that python is very sloppy when it comes to scopes. It seems that variables declared in loops are callable in function scopes. So this code actually does not give any errors:
for i in range(6):
print i
print(“out of loop scope”, i)
Now I’m just like: WTF! That can cause some serious errors when you’re not aware of this thing. I don’t know any other language that has this property...4 -
Why the fuck is it so hard to write a simple bash script. Syntax so strange and so many symbols you need to know. If you need to do calculations with floating point numbers, the mess is perfect.11

Had a particularly strange one about hose pipes flailing wildly but in a very specific pattern.
I’d been working on a bit of a monolithic multithreaded data pipeline and I couldn’t work out what I wanted to do with the thread pool. When I woke up I had a picture of those hose pipes, that basically how it now works😂 -

The new guy ran into traffic one day instead of using the crosswalk with the rest of us. There were several pirouettes involved and luckily the cars slammed the brakes in time. To this day we still have no idea why he did it.

So I'm here after a long break coz my life is shit all over again, and only devRant allows me to rant officially.
I was selected by a recruiter visiting our college in very early days of the campus placements, September last year,
Problem 1:
I wasn't allowed to sit in any of the other recruitment drives by the college, even when I didn't really like the job profile I was in
Problem 2:
The company is taking 12 tests and wants me to work on 3 Projects of bootstrap, rails, and react each, before they give me joining.
Here I am working like an asshole with all frustrations after my college got over to finish the tasks without a penny.
This frustration is only causing more and more delay in my work. -

well python is quite weird in its syntax but at the same time quite easy(?)
don't know what i should think about it 😕 as i'm used to the strict structure of java
any other good videos i can watch to get a better grasp of it?7 -

Excuse my question I might be the one to blame, but on Typescript 3.7 JSON.stringify parses numbers as strings, while on 3.4 it was working without issues.
I'm no pro in web dev but I did use JSON.stringify lots of times and that's something strange here, not sure what the cause is, but when I parse number props again using parseInt(value.toString()) it works .-.2 -
