A young guy I work with burst into tears today, I had no idea what happened so I tried to comfort him and ask what was up.
It appears his main client had gone nuts with him because they wanted him to make an internet toolbar (think Ask.com) and he politely informed them toolbars doesn't really exist anymore and it wouldn't work on things like modern browsers or mobile devices.
Being given a polite but honest opinion was obviously something the client wasn't used to and knowing the guy was a young and fairly inexperienced, they started throwing very personal insults and asking him exactly what he knows about things (a lot more than them).
So being the big, bold, handsome senior developer I am, I immediately phoned the client back and told them to either come speak to me face-to-face and apologise to him in person or we'd terminate there contract with immediate effect. They're coming down tomorrow...
So part my rant, part a rant on behalf of a young developer who did nothing wrong and was treated like shit, I think we've all been there.
We'll see how this goes! Who the hell wants a toolbar anyway?!401 -
I ’m kinda jealous of English programmers. How cool must it be to have all the common characters for programming fit onto a single modifier, and to have all special characters for default vim keybindings available with shift. On a hungarian keyboard, braces and square brackets are both AltGr-bound, but parentheses are shift-bound. Oh, and the semicolon is AltGr + the key right above it, so it breaks touch typing.21

Multiple friens asked if I could help someone with her "laptop".
Me: so I hear that you have problems with your laptop?
She: oh yea let me get my laptop.
A minute later she comes back with an iPad mini.
She: I cant get this app to work!
How can they all call that a laptop! *facepalm*9 -
So the same guy who called Ninetails from Naruto a wolf is PM in this project with me
During scrum meeting:
PM: I read the project scope again and I realised there are scopes that we didn't get it. Each time I read the scope there's something new.
Me: *Sure, the scope is fucked with a long 8 feet dragon dildo to start with*
PM: Read the scope 5 times, cause we don't want to miss anything. If QA raises an issue regarding the modules which are in scope but you implemented it wrong then it won't be considered Change request and you have to do deliver it in time even work on weekends with no compensation.
Me: ...
PM: Now, go through the scope again today and we will hold a meeting after working hours (unpaid, but can be adjusted in monthly avg) and I will ask random questions.
Me: *tf*
PM: And anyone who won't be able to answer them will sit through the non-working hours and go through the scope again
Me: *YOU FUCKTARD, incompetence from your side or from business development team to create a simple understandable scope can't force us to sit through non-working hours.*
I already had an opinion about this guy from my previous rant, his improved a little in between but I guess not2 -
When I discovered Clean Code, design patterns, TDD and BDD. It just clicked. Ever since everything build so easy and obviously. I no longer have most of the code problems folks rant here about.
That's when it came to me: it's not enough to know how to write code. To climb off those amateur shoes I must adopt those methodologies, so that the code would be decoupled from me, from my style, and I've got to let tests drive my code rather than vice versa to have a flexible and reliable codebase that is cheap and easy to maintain/extend.40 -
That feeling when you find a library in GitHub that does everything you need but you see it hasn't been updated in more than two years... Just in case I answered a few issues, I hope I helped someone2

The advantage of programming in Android studio is that you can read a chapter of your favorite book, watch a series or do a little exercise... Thank you gradle2

That awkward moment you beat Goolgle at its own game.
Inspired by @NotHappy's post https://devrant.com/rants/2301137/... to fix my issues,
Now what do i do?19 -
My university decided to switch their mailing software to outlook. So no smtp/imap in the future. How am I supposed to do my mailing stuff now? I use older ("non-microsoft") mail clients like mutt or upas? What about standards? Aargh19

Does anyone else really dislike "foo", "bar" and "baz"? Because fuck me I do. My brain can't process that stuff, I need some actual real world context.
or, maybe i'm just dumb.8 -

Everybody keeps telling me that public transport is better than driving a car. So SBB (rail company) is doing some constuction on a station and i have to take a rail replacement bus. Which is now stuck in traffic.
So like an overly full bus with the heating stuck to max is just creeping along the road. Past a single station that is on repair!
Fuck it im going by car to school even if parking is expensive af!12 -
ALL JS TUTORIALS SHOULD EXPIRE AUTOMATICALLY AFTER 1 YEAR AND DISAPPEAR FROM THE INTERNET FOREVER!!!!!
jeez every tutorial i start i realize is no longer relevant code after the npm install step!!

composer is the trojan horse enabler provided by lazy fuckers who get trapped into hype and like easy solutions to complex problems... now every library uses it, and we are stuck with this fucking piece of shit3

-- How I feel at work lately, in terms my wife understands --
Me: There's a gas leak, we need to fix it.
Manager: Yeah, use some duct tape, here's a roll.
Me: That's not how we fix a problem like this.
Manager: Will it work to solve the problem?
Me: Only temporarily
Manager: Ask your co-worker if you need help using duct tape, he's used it before. When will it be fixed?12
