Our teacher asked us to write an essay. Since I'm not a native English speaker, I asked him if I could write it in English (essays are easier in English). He was cinfused at first, but said:

People giving Xcode bad reviews for being english only.
Stay the fuck away from development if english is a problem for you! 🤬
I'm already annoyed by the translation craze everywhere in development.
At least Apple remains sane in that regard.15 -

Seriously anyone who doesn't use english names for variables and shit, get the fuck out! I don't care how many dicks you sucked, don't fucking do it!
I'm working on redoing a somewhat big database with a small team and the fuckers who designed the new database decided to use danish names everywhere and misspell shit! What the fuck are you doing!
Who the fuck calls it a birthdate? and misspells the danish equivalent?
And what the fuck is this, using _id and ID like they are the fucking same thing!?!
For the love of all that is holy, stick to english, one naming convention and check your crap spelling!
AARGH!19 -
English is my second language. Today I learned Fedora is not just a Linux distro. It's also a name of a hat.
Guess the old logo made sense.8 -

Hi, everyone! :)
I'm new here, and still studying but I am passionate about programming :)

One of my favourite, encryption puzzles is this:

Answer is plain text string in english. Good luck, post solution in the comments!25 -
As a German developer living in Germany, I am used to write my code completely in English. In all of my former companies that was also the norm. In one company, we even talked completely in English with each other to a point where even if only German people where in a room, they would default to English at one point in a conversation because it became second nature to us.
(That company was very international and we had a lot of people from all over the world working there.)
Now, I work at a new German company that focuses on the German market. And for some reason I failed to ask them:
Do you write your code in English?
Because that's the norm, isn't it!? I just assumed it to be the case.
Nope! This time it is a mess of German and English term intermixing in glorious abysmal ways I never thought possible.
Sometimes we translate terms, sometimes we don't. So you have to wrap your mind around collections of words that COULD mean the same thing unless they don't. Best case, you have two words for the same thing, but I've seen up to five words (or abbreviations) to describe one business entity. Madness.
And don't get me started on the plurals. In English, it's almost exclusively: add an `s`.
In German, the singular and plural can be the same (e.g. all nouns ending with `-er`) so tough luck determining if you are on an object or an array of objects. (Weak typing language in use does not help either but that's an entirely different rant.)25 -
Why the fuck would people use non English html classes and IDs, or just randomly mix languages. Please don't fucking do this13
-
"Hey I am a programmer too! I can code anything, I bet I'm better than you!"
-
"Huh, that sounds cool! What languages do you like to write your programs in?"
-
............ "English"
🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂
True story by the way, some guy I just met did this. I was not sure how to react. Should I laugh? Should I cry? Should I kill myself? Should I kill him?10 -
Sitting in a germans-only company on a germans-only talk, listening to german presenters trying to speak english.
"...And sis is a Integräitontest, witsch is verry important [...] sis here is my sird maven plugin..." schnitzel.
Why for god sake do you funky hip devs mean you have to speak english to me?! Especially if you are simply not able to?
Some of my favorites:
My english is not se yellow from se egg but I hope you understand me.

The whole "‹‹in what language you program?›› ‹‹english››" joke is all fun and games until you realize there's people who don't program in english...3

I just love when someone writes variables in Polish/German/Russian/Chinese/Esperanto/Klingon or any other language that is not an English33

Got a message yesterday from a company about some dev job that I applied for a while ago...
Don't remember anything about the requirements, but I know that they were exclusively looking for people highly proficient in spoken and written English.
From our brief chat, I can only hope that the position is for a FUCKING ENGLISH TEACHER!6 -
I ’m kinda jealous of English programmers. How cool must it be to have all the common characters for programming fit onto a single modifier, and to have all special characters for default vim keybindings available with shift. On a hungarian keyboard, braces and square brackets are both AltGr-bound, but parentheses are shift-bound. Oh, and the semicolon is AltGr + the key right above it, so it breaks touch typing.24
-
For some reason, seeing source code in my native language (Czech) disgusts me and decreases my motivation to read through it.
Anyone else knows that feeling?25 -
So, after weeks of reading spicy rants from all of you, I finally decided to join your community ; even if I'm only a student, I've encountered some solid crap in my internships.
Let's go back in time bois. Two years ago, I started my first intership at a Fortune 500 company (this doesn't exists in France, but whatever, this is nearly the same category). I was supposed to build some file sharing system for the office. Before getting into it, I briefly thought aboyt what technos I could use to build it and make a sweet interface for my co-workers, in 10 weeks, and not a single another day.
Expectations
> Nice team with devs that I could ask things about and learn solid tricks that would even amaze David Copperfield
> Having a nice dev environment
Reality
> Alone on this project
> No fucking dev environment, I had to build everything on Notepad
> No CI
> No SCM
> And, the worst, Ladies and Gentlemans,
I FUCKING HAD TO WORK IN A SINGLE FILE IN A CLOSED ENVIRONMENT.
NO WEBSERVER, NO DEDICATED SPACE.
I HAD TO REQUEST A SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENT IN A CLOSED CUSTOM CMS THAT WAS SERVING FILES, SO THIS FORMAT COULD BE READ ON FOLDER OPENING IN IE9 (FIREFOX FORBIDDEN).
YOU HAD TO MIX HTML, CSS AND JS IN A SINGLE FILE. NO SERVER-SIDE LANGUAGES, ONLY STATIC LINKS, NO FRAMEWORKS (if we can call jQuery, Bootstrap, Semantic UI and all these thinks "Frameworks").
> mfw at the end of the intership13 -
I wonder, does one have to know English to code?
And does devrant auto translate other languages to English? Seems everyone here knows English wherever they're from.15 -
I've been writing more python than English the last month so now I have to go through my essay and replace all the single quotes with double quotes...7

Is there an English (UK) option for writing CSS properties? I could never get used to writing "color" all the time 😧23

Anyone watched 'Jhonny English Strikes Again'? This is the code that drives the exoskeleton... I guess it just needs a random number to work. 😂😂3

Got a course on Udemy for fun (work provides the account). Inside of the comments for a lecture (that I knew was going to leave people stumped) one dude complained that no one was answering his question......in Spanish. All other questions were made in Spanish, in a course thought by some Serbian dude.
Like.....really?8 -
If naming classes, methods and variables in your (not english) native language seems like a good idea, please get another job.9

My colleague was hesitant to write a rant because he wasn't confident with his English. Made him write one and I proofread, now it's trending towards a duck. 😇😇3

Dear God, please grant me patience when my clients are lawyers and English teachers. Remind me that computers are okay with spelling errors but these people are not.2

It's 2017 and I still didn't find a tutorial where the writer is aware of the difference between "its" and "it's".

Am I the only one that does not even consider a freelance job if the description has bad/poor English and/or is written in all caps?4

When you name your variables in any other language than English, I assume you are a bad programmer4
-
My boss sucks really hard at English... I would not have a problem with it if he didn't insist on naming methods and variables with a non-sense English that he thinks is right...8
-
I just realized something in my work place, I'm the only one beside the intern (lol) on my team who is proficient in english.
I was helping a coworker debug some issues and she couldn't understand the OBVIOUS error message telling her precisely wtf was wrong and the exact line...
I know something for sure... In our area English is basic, learn it or gtfo. I might as well conduct half the interviews in English from now on.4 -
Stougles of a developer whose native language is not English.

I love how German lecturers teaching in English still insist on mentioning how terms are called in German. My favorite so far are:

Ruamlicher vorwartsschnitt

Many thanks to DevRant, finally i'm learning english "in the real world"
I'm always been incapable of learning language, but in return I know a lot of programming languages.

I wonder how many devs are learning English on devRant.
I'm kind of sad I don't get a chance to practice any (spoken) languages.21 -
( bad english alert )
Why everybody from my school class, saying "Windows is better than linux, because windows don't have commands like linux"13 -
WHY THE FUCK DO MY TEACHERS KEEP USING SHITTY TRANSLATIONS FOR PROGRAMMING CONCEPTS?! Like dude, everything related to programming is in english, just use the fucking terms in english for fucks sake. There are some words like "array" that fit into portuguese sentences without needing translation, so why translate it?
Why do you use acronyms in portuguese? People in the Database Systems class will later read a lot the acronym DBMS but won't know what the fuck that is because they teach the acronym SGBD, which is a translation.
It's so cringy and useless, so many terms the students will have to translate back to english when they get out to the real world because everything related to programming is in english.
"oh but what if the person doesn't know english" you don't even have to know english, just associate the concept (which will be explained to you in your language) with an english word. Also if you don't know english you'll have a very hard time, so I'd suggest taking english classes as your electives.
Ok I'm done, I got it out of my system.6 -
Today our team got the best grade in our Windows OS presentation in English.
I have talked about the security aspect and got an A.
The other two comrades got an A and an A-.
My English teacher told me that I was perfect. That made me so fucking proud. Oh god.
I don't even know why I'm writing this lol4 -
My non-English-native-speaking dev brothers and sisters, the proper preposition is "for" not "since" when speaking about a length of time. For example:
"I have been studying CS for 2 years."
"I worked at Google for 6 months."
"This house has been on the market for 4 weeks."
I think some ESL class has been teaching everyone improperly.24 -
1 year and a half ago, I quit the job where I spent almost 6 years; My first job after that was as a freelancer for certain company here in colombia, but after sometime I learned that freelancing for local companies is not well payed at all, so I decided to try to work with toptal(a pre-vetted freelancer platform)
So the process included a first interview with a HR person, it was a british lady that mopped the floor with me(she wasn't rude at all but I felt horrible) 'cuz I couldn't speak english good enough, and then I was rejected... Some time down the line I created a rant for anyone that were willing to speak sometime to practice english conversations. @jesustricks and @orhun answered and in fact I got to speak with them.
@amyshackles spoke with me too, I reached her out over linkedin 😊
Just wanted to say thank you, finally I got a job offer with a nearshore company, you helped me a lot there, speaking with you people gave confidence and more knowledge. Again thank you, love you guys.
PS: you don't have to love me back8 -

A friend asked me how people who don't speak English learn to code...he said, "Do they have to learn English first?"
😂
I told him, "See, you're halfway to being a programmer!"3 -
I was just wondering guys. If all developers speak English.
By speak English I mean easily able to communicate at a basic level because from what I know... all programming language had their base vocabulary in English language.
Just wondering!?question community vote query opinions thoughts languages wondering developer not a rant programmers18 -

I don't want to sound ethnocentric but is anyone else annoyed by having to correct the spelling of variable, class, table name, and other code after it was built overseas? I'm in a third round of combing consecutively deeper into the code to ferret out these misspellings so they don't go into production. Is it too much to ask that the freelancer who says he speaks and writes native English not then turn that work over to a subcontractor who clearly does not?4
-
Speaking of annoying stuff in coding. What the fuck is it with the localized error messages?
No. Fuck you. No. Give me the English version so I can google it and find answers from the huge English speaking community instead of the tiny community of my language.6 -
Hello world in different languages. Everyone can add a suggestion :) . No google translate!!! I give the first ones :)
Only one language per person! 😂

What about "Man page"? You sound like a sex-throlling maniac and I demand that you blacklist the term also from the dictions on your doc 🤪 (Oh fuck, did I just used the word 'blacklist'?) *whispers* Sorry Jim, I actually meant 'darklist' the word 'Man page'.9

'Apple CEO Tim Cook says it is more important to learn how to code than it is to learn English as a second language.'
I mean, most of the code that I'd ever work on would be in English, no matter which country I'm living in. Most of the resources, documentation, tutorials are in English. Plus, if you think algorithmically, the logical code flow closely resembles constructs in English language. How could I possibly code without knowing English?

Answering a question on Stackexchange. The OP accepts your answer as correct. Then seeing someone correcting your English Grammar on the answer. That someone happens to be Drupal and English language moderator at the same time...fucking awesome.

Since day 1, I've been eager in learning everything dev-related in English, and as it, I've focused on thinking, writing, shitting and eating english for a basis.
Now, where I work, I say, our country native language it's Spanish, but I feel bad whenever they tell me I must write everything in Spanish (code included). Maybe I'm overreacting or something.
So, here's my question for you, devs, when you're working on a coding-related project, should it be on English or not?3 -
Was once interviewing for Ops support roles looking after multiple websites wrote in java, rails, php with some rest apis, apache, varnish and more....
We were also starting moving towards automation and devops practices so we needed to expand...
We have a great CV from someone who had all of the technologies and chef mentioned on their CV so we were positive....
Invited to interview and something wasn't right..... I dropped a "so you mentioned a few different languages on your CV, can you talk me though some of the applications you've looked after and what languages they were written in, etc?"
His reply.. "yes I looked after a lot of applications and helped people with them in English"
Me "oh.. Okay.... So those apps which software languages were they... You mentioned things like Java and Php and automation tech like chef?"
Him "well yes they were all sorts of things but I predominantly looked after the apps that were wrote in English... Didn't deal with any wrote in java or chef... Just English"
Me ".... Does anyone else have any questions?"
Safe to say we didn't offer him the job.... -
The actual struggle of working in a non-english team who prefers to keep their variables named in our native language. Currently trying to think of a better way to phrase 'sjaafoerAerend' as dropping any part of it makes it more vague.
Is this a thing in asian countries as well? I'm guessing it's more common to just stick to english naming there.
I figure it's safe to assume that anyone who will see the code are going to be proficient in english. If they aren't, natively named variables isn't going to make a difference. Hell I even write my personal reminder comments in english.4 -
"Vitamin B" as we say in Germany.
Would be something like "Vitamin R" in english, it's all about relationships to the right people.3 -
How my customers act when they want something.. create a CR in wenglish (weird english) then go figure what they want.. xD

Welp, who wants to see my first website? tiny.cc/copo
It was made almost entirely during english class, for blocked games. It's the most hits I've ever got one a site I've made. But the best part? I achieved my goal: respect from the teachers. And why did they respect me? *Because it got blocked*. Yup, across the entire county (our county is one of the top five in the USA for schools I believe). We, as the students, found a way around the teacher's technological control, and finally got some technological freedom. Just a small story.
P.S. not named by me, and sorry bout that JS redirect. I redesigned it while I was supposed to be writing about the theme but the original is couchpotato not cppremium. I can't change it now but I'll change it later. I trust you guys know how to stop it without me changing it though :)8 -
This damn Google Gboard voice typing switches between German and English, although in the settings only German is enabled.... This is so annoying goddamn...1

The fact that the world of technology and programming is entirely built on English temrinology irritates me.

Everytime there's a bug for me, being English is the problem.
In the US, the spelling color is used to match the spelling of the word's Latin etymon, and to make all derivatives consistent (colorimeter, colorize, colorless, etc). Elsewhere in the English-speaking world, the spelling colour has been retained1 -

So this was a conversation.
tl;dr You can't just FUCKING RECOMPILE for an older OpenGL version you dimwit!
Context: Person Y has OpenGL 3.1, my program requires OpenGL 2.1, but refused to launch with "Pixel format not accelerated"
--------
Person X - Today at 9:28 PM
Nope
or optionally compile it for old opengl
Or just use my old junk.
Me - Today at 9:29 PM
No
Person X - Today at 9:29 PM
Why?
Me - Today at 9:29 PM
You don't just "compile it for old opengl"
Person X - Today at 9:29 PM
I can
Btw
Me - Today at 9:29 PM
For one, Person Y has an OGL version new enough so... /shrug
Person X - Today at 9:29 PM
shrug
Me - Today at 9:30 PM
And there is no way I'm ripping the rendering code apart and re-doing everything with glBegin, glVertex, glEnd guff
Person X - Today at 9:30 PM
You don't have to
Me - Today at 9:30 PM
You do
Person X - Today at 9:30 PM
Just use a vbo
Than a vba
Me - Today at 9:30 PM
I ALREADY USE FUCKING VBOS
Person X - Today at 9:30 PM
....
There's two typws
Types
Btw one with indacys and one with out
Ones 3.0 ones 4.0
Me - Today at 9:31 PM
tl;dr. I am not rewriting half of everything for worse performance just for the sake of being compatible with even more legacy OGL, that might not even work anyway for Person Y. idc
Person X - Today at 9:32 PM
Plus if your using glut you can set the version I want to say
Also it's not worse
<Some more conversation>
Person X - Today at 9:33 PM
Btw crafted [Me] taking th lazy way as normal
Btwx500
Me - Today at 9:33 PM
Taking the lazy way eh.
You have no idea do you
Person X - Today at 9:33 PM

Not really a rant, but I love Android!
Go to Settings -> Language and Input -> Language, and change it to English (UK), the answers given by Google assistant will have a British accent. Change it to English (India), Google assistant will have an Indian accent, and the same thing applies for English (Australia) and obviously English (US).
Perfect example of phone adapting to the user!4 -

Any Irish people here?
I’m planning to move to Ireland in the next six months, probably somewhere near cork.
Currently I’m living in Switzerland but I’m actually german.
However, I have two major concerns:
1) my English is good but not that good. It’s probably a bit better than the German average but still far from fluent. I think in the first months it might be difficult to communicate in English all day long in the office.
Did you have any coworkers or friends who moved there from a non-native English speaking country? How did they do? Did the company have problems with being patient with those people?
2) how hard is it to find a job as a java developer with 7+y experience considering #1?
Bonus question: what do you guys actually think about Germans, am I welcome? :)12 -
Fuck I hate when my brain remembers the wrong keyword! Just spent way too long trying to figure out why my regex wasn’t working! I remember RegEx.check(str) tests for a match and returns a Boolean. How do you know ML and AI has gone too far? You rely on the algorithm instead of the obvious.
Google will translate comments, etc. At times when you click on an English video to language around your location. This is so obvious, if I didn't understand English if would not have clicked on the video!!

Why aren't there more programming languages out there that aren't derived from English?
We're in the age of universal UTF-8 support, if it was meant to be then it should be happening now.
+ sarcasm
I mean, we should be more inclusive and allow other flavours of JavaScript that aren't based on English across browser, right? Otherwise that would mean that English is the master language of the web.

Hey! Here's my problem: I am a german guy with pretty fluent english. When I will be done with my bachelor's (or master's, depending on my preference in 3 years) degree, I've decided I'd like to live/work in america; if that is at least somewhat easily possible. Ofc I'd have to get someone to hire me first, but I'll probably find at least something (what kind of company would be best? something like google? a start up?)
I tried googling how to become a citizen, how to work, how to live in america etc. but it's just so many different requirements and statuses and rules and forms that I would have to spend a very large amount of time, which might be wasted. So I thought I'd ask you guy's whether it's possible. /r/america (or similar, it was quite some time ago) didn't respond to my questions.
What do I need to know? What do I need to own? What do I need in terms of skills? What would help my chances? How long does this normally take? Is being a white male german a benefit? How much? Could I stay there permanently or would it be a stay-as-long-as-you-have-a-job sort of scenario? What kinds of precautions can I take?
Is it advisable to go there? If not, what are good english-speaking alternatives? What are non-english alternatives (e.g. I thought about sweden; they seem to have great laws, people, internet, scenery)?3 -

I know it a strange thing to ask but I need help with English grammar ( I am not a English native)
I am doing an assignment on context free grammar program.
What the program need to do it "Produce a grammar tree based on the rule"
For example a sentence "Jame sat.", It will need to produce a grammar tree like this.
S
_____|___
NP VP
| |
N V
| |
holmes sat
The only thing I need to do it give a grammar rule to the program like this
S -> NP VP
NP -> N | Det N
VP -> V | NP
What the above rule said is that the sentence is composed of Noun Phrase and Verb Phrase and Noun Phrase is either is a Noun or a determiner and Noun.
Now here is the meat of the question.
I am having trouble parsing a grammar tree for this sentence "She never said a word until we were at the door here"
I have provided my grammar rule below. I think I forget to add some grammar rule or some of my grammar rule are incorrect. I am not a native English speaker so I am having trouble on it.
The search engine have fail me (I have look up various grammar tree) so I am asking for help on devrant. Grammar nazi are warmly welcome :)
S -> NP VP | S Conj VP | S Conj S
NP -> N | Det NP | N PP | Adj N | Det Adj N | Det N
PP | Det NOM | Det N PP
VP -> V | V NP | V NP PP | V PP | V NP PP Adv
VP -> Adv V NP | VP PP | VP AVP | V PP PP | V
ADJP
PP -> P NP
AVP -> Adv | Adv Adj | Adv AVP
NOM -> Adj Adj N | Adj N | Adj NP
ADJP -> Adj | Adj PP
**I am not sure about these two clause below**
VP -> V | Adv
NP -> Adj Adj N22 -
