My dad called me up at 11:30 PM telling me that his computer wasn't booting. I drive over to see what was going on. I notice immediately that the motherboard light is a solid amber light.
Me: "The motherboard is amber, that means it's failing to POST".
Dad: "How soon can we fix it? I need to run my Ebay business."
Me: "A week probably. You have a laptop that works can you use that?"
Dad: "It doesn't work great with Windows, it's not a very powerful compu"
Me: "You're going to use Linux dad. Welcome to Linux."11 -
Our Adobe Illustrator teacher(he taught us a bit of Photoshop before), tasked us with entering a contest for a logo design. The company's name is synonymous to amber in my mother tongue, but instead of it doing something related to that they partnered with T.V. services etc and are doing things in the field. The limitation of the contest is that we have to use a specific color in the amber range(given with the CMYK and Pantone values), and if the design ends up a success, one gets nearly 500$.
I have an idea, but I don't know how I will be going about doing it. I'm not great at either design or drawing. My skills in drawing don't match up with my ideas...
I'll still try it.14 -
That moment when my boss and I were having a conversation (2 weeks into my new job) and she tells me her daughters name is "Amber" and I jump up with, "oh snap!! That's my dogs name too!!" 😑4

Worst part of being a developer: when you suggest a subtle amber shade but your client insists on bright yellow.3

You guys should really take a look at your YouTube history sometimes (If you use it). It's amazing how I move from one video to another.
Here is what I did yesterday:
- I watched a GOT Season 7 review
- Then for some reason, I watched Underground nuclear test
- Several HD footages of Nuclear tests
- Top 10 Demolitions gone wrong 😕
- "No Planes" in 9/11 attack 😕
- Amber Heard's Sexy Prank 😕
Fucking hell, I need to get back to work ☹️17 -
less than a month left until a 365-days-long uptime of my laptop
Didn't notice the low-battery light glowing amber while watching Netflix

A friend of mine and fellow Dev is facing deportation back to Mosul, Iraq. He's in Sheffield UK doing his PhD, and was taken to a detention centre in the early hours of the morning a few days ago.
I am sorry to spam this place but I am desperately trying to get this petition out there. It hurts like hell to see a friend in jail over Christmas.

Fuck YouTube and their sponsored content!
You can clearly see they get paid to promote certain videos as they pop out of nowhere, regardless of your interests, and no matter how many time you click "I don't like this" or "don't recommend channel".
It can be simple stuff like Warthunder vids (which I don't play and never searched for),
Or complex like the Amber Heard trial - vids that make her look foolish. Feels like Depp dropped some serious cash on YouTube to make him look like a victim! (regardless if he really is or not)
Isn't there a law that sponsored content must be marked as such?13 -

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Brian Goetz. He's undoubtedly capable as an engineer, but he's also one of those 90's style neck beard jerks who is incapable of having a conversation with another human being and not being condescending AF.
That out of the way, this proposition and explanation is why I keep paying attention to him (well, maybe not entirely, he owns the direction of java, so yeah).
https://github.com/openjdk/...
It's reasonable, well thought out, and gives credit where it's due. While a bit non-committal, it speaks to what good has happened to java since it moved out from under the original manager (though the original owner was still far superior).
Here's hoping we see more proposals that parallel this direction.3 -
Batteries don't like me anymore
Yesterday late evening I was out to bring a festive parcel to someone. I left home with 29% batt, went there and still had 27%. Made 3 short (~1min) calls and headed home. Opened Firefox and my phone crashed. WTF, how could FF crash Android? OS separation failure? I turn my phone back on and it says LOW BATTERY: 0%. wtf... With 27% I should have been good until the next morning with no problems! And now it went 27%→0% in a blink (literally).
Today I decided to stay on my lappy for the morning. YT videos to catch up to, dR posts to scroll through, etc. A few hours later laptop battery is drained down to 29%. I step away for a few minutes for a cup of coffee and when I come back - the battery indicator LED is glowing amber and OS says it's got 6% left
29%→6% in a few moments of idle. Riigghhhhttt.... And I thought I won't want anything for this Christmas.
I wonder what's the significance of 27/29% there...3 -

ways to mess with Datacenter staff:
make every server flash blue light for identification, turn on amber light, and display "Printer Error: 1D10T" -
Oh dear Amber Rudd has encyrption in her sights again. And still doesn't seem to understand what it is.

Used to love our old severity grading methods on my old project. Traffic light system worked a treat. Defect raised... Have we seen this before? Green light
Never seen it but it's on stack overflow? Amber light
Not on stack overflow? Red light and most definitely an "environment fault" -
PROTIP: Using ed(1) can be a fun experience. Just remember to RTFM and be patient.
Using a cheesy amber CRT helps, as well. -
"[Degenerate type is] a form of canned cynicism which will doom its perpetrators to a special room in hell where lovely little children of all races, creeds, and religions are eternally batched in gentle rosy and amber glows, singing 'It’s a small world after all.' There’s no reason to create an alphabet which looks like it leaked out a diaper." - Peter Fraterdeus

On April the 30th the code awakened in me.
From all the overnighters, the pressure it was already as if my brain was a suitable host. Of course it would not compile the code or be any kind of real VM, but all the business logic, all the pesky details of this mutilated code had literally been branded into the biomass of my brain.
I did not know how I kept on going. Amber, caffeine, valerian did not really help. But I staggered from step to step to keep that project running that should never have been begun. -
