I feel so sorry for all the people in the world who use their phone more than their PC/laptop.
All the pitiful souls who think they're gamers because they installed lootchest simulator on their little digital skinner box. All the sad beings who just view the internet as a collection of ad-infested apps.
Actually, I don't feel sorry, because these people make the world a worse place.
Suddenly we needed websites which could render on tiny screens and need bloated cross-platform app development frameworks. Many game studios became parasites exploiting addictive behavior in humans, instead of creating works of art.
Humans spent 10,000 years to perfect their caves with expensive kitchens, and all people want is for their WiFi to reach the grill at the end of the garden. Humans created central heating, comfortable couches, wall-mounted TVs and luxurious desks -- and all people can think of is whether their phone plan covers holiday roaming at their shitty resorts.
The rare times I do actually go into this apocalyptic wasteland people call "The Outside", all I see is subway cars full of hunched addicted drudges, bus stops with clusters of enslaved automatons.
Fuck all of them.
Fuck all of you imbeciles, who ventured out of the cave and now DARE to call me anti-social, just for preferring the warmth of my comfortable protective den.
It's fucking cozy here, within the walls of my shelter, I got booze and a fridge full of food and a bunch of LSD, I can masturbate under the shower, have sex on the couch, have all kinds of GIANT displays for entertainment, with full-sized qwerty-keyboards, high-DPI mouses, even some console controllers and big TVs if I feel lazy.
You can stick your responsive websites and social-network-integrated Android apps up your rectum, just sit your fucking fat ass down in front of a workstation and desperately refresh the stream of fake attention-seeking messages there, if you absolutely must.
Seriously, why does this guy from our marketing department call me on my private phone number. Why did HR PROVIDE him with my private phone number?
And WHY THE FUCK is he asking me, a DB admin: "Our website doesn't load properly on Safari on my iPhone 7, could you take a look at it"?
No, of course I won't fucking come to the office to take a look at your miserable shitty device with its cracked glass screen.
Fuck you and your outdoorsy habits.
Stay the fuck in your cave, you degenerate attention whore, otherwise please go choke on your airpods.25
I use my mouse on 4k dpi and today someone asked me how do i move the cursor without moving the mouse5
Spent more than an hour on client's computer trying to figure out why it was rendering a font in bold, while every other device I tried (even with same browser/OS/screen DPI) rendered it in normal weight. Google Fonts were loading fine. After banging my head into TeamViewer window for the Nth time, I found the problem. The font was installed on client's computer locally, so it was overriding remotely loaded Google Fonts. What's the problem then? The local version only had bold version.
Deleting the local font fixed it.7
Hey so this is more of an Android advice post rather than a rant
So it's to do with the app I'm working on, I want to make sure that the app images are working on different size screens and I was wondering if using the developer option for changing dpi a feasible option in terms of testing, so far I've tested for xxhdpi and xxxhdpi, and just now tested for xhdpi and so far so good.
But I can't seem to test for any smaller screens (240dpi and below)
Just thought I'd ask you guys because this is the best community ever!12
So nearly done with the work app and I need these images scaled accurately (it's for comparing pupils) my problem is I'd normally ask my brother to make the images but he is busy with uni for the next few weeks.
I'm just wondering is there a tool I can use that can rescale images (I have images from the iPhone app, and I gotta say I had to add in % changes despite the proper dpi sizing), I'm looking at the Android documentation but what's funny is in the listed resolutions OnePlus 3 wasn't included (along with some other newer resolutions) lol, and also Wikipedia for OnePlus 3 has the width and height switched (for some reason the author imagined the phone is also in landscape lol).
So do you guys know of something I can use? Programming is one thing but designer is another :/4
LONG RANT ALERT, no TL;DR
* Writes an email to colleague about why I can't create a page on our CMS without at least a H1 title. She wants to me to put up an image with text on it (like a flyer), for multiple reasons, I say I need a textless image. *
30 minutes later:
* Casually plans a frontend optimization project, by looking at files on the CMS, in order to make further development easier and less time-taking*
*** EMAIL NOTIFICATION ***

"Hello, this is [Graphic designer] from the company who created the image with text on it. I do not understand why you can't put display:none on your <h1> tag. Also, being a web company, we are used to making themes and my solution of display:none will work. It's pityful to work on a design only to have it stripped out from most of its concept. If you can't do that, do tell me what resolution you need."
My first reaction:
"Dear [Graphic designer], I am managing our corporate identity, our backend and frontend codebase, I am a graphic designer myself, and am also SEO-aware. For at least 8 reasons (redacted, 'cuse too long), I will need an image without text. As told to my colleagues, I need a 72/96 DPI 16:9 ratio image, 1920x1080 is a good start but may be bigger. Also, looking at the image, it'll have to be in JPG, at 100% quality, exported for the web. Our database software will optimize the image by itself."
Reasons are about SEO issues, responsiveness issues, CMS tools issues, backend and frontend issues.
Instead, I sent following email "We can't. Image please."
I mean seriously. A bit of clarity for you:
In my company, nobody has the slightest idea what I do. They don't understand how a computer works (we all know it works by magic, right?). So of course, when one thinks what we don't know, we know it better than the one who knows, my colleague thought our CMS was like a word document, and began telling me how I should display her bible-length text-infected image, by using some inline css styling display:none.
I tell her "nope, because of my 8 reasons". She transmits that to the agency who's done the visual, now I have this [Graphic designer] not understanding that there are other CMSs than Wordpress on the web, and she tells me, me being one of the most aware on this CMS we have, how I should optimize my site?
Fucking shit, she connects on our CMS for 1 second and she'll get cancer since it's so bad. I'm in the process of planning a whole new rewrite so the website is well designed (currently I am modifying a base theme made by an incompetent designer). I know the system by heart and I know what you can, or can't do.
Now I just received an answer: "so it's only a pure technical problem". NO, OUR WEBSITE WAS CODED BY A CHIMPANZEE WHO THOUGHT WEB DEV WAS AS EASY AS WRITING "HELLO WORLD" ON A SHITTY CMS THAT FORCES DEV USERS TO USE A FUCKING CUM-WHITE-THEMED EDITOR TO EDIT THE WHOLE SITE!!!
I can't just sneeze and "oh look, it's working!"1
woooooohoooooo! successfully installed Gentoo on my laptop after 7 hours of compilation. It's probably not in the perfect state as I'd like, but I hope to work it out.
My current problem...
WHY can't i have separate DPI's on different displays!!!!
I can't use my second monitor right now because of DPI issues.
BTW, i configured Gentoo + i3
For now, i'll sleep sound 😅😅😊😊😊2
I was working on this ER model today and making everything look polished and alligned and then I proceed to generate the PNG out of it, but it turns out blurry and disgusting and eww and why the hell can't I change the dpi or ppi even? 96 dpi is not enough ...4
Funny how DPI impacts scanning speed... I have been scanning 150 DPI the whole time hoping it would save me some time, I'm better off with 225.
(Left: DPI, Right: seconds)4
Just found out my phone (stock, no root) has user-settable minimum DPI? The battery saver thing drops the DPI some and auto-adjusts the DPI and resolution to save power, but I didn't know I could set it... (Minimum 320 DPI, max 960 DPI)6
Today I had sort of a meltdown when I found out that the small, 20-something company where I work and where we should all 'trust each other' is working to stealthily enable SSL Inspection.
I'm done with doing anything other than what is stipulated in my contract such as helping out in other areas out of my own volition.
Management got control hungry and mad once they got their hands on a Deep Inspection Firewall.
Well, I'm not feeling sorry for the uproar they'll have to endure once colleagues find out they are doing this stealthily.
Serves them right and after this and other similar experiences my trust in this company is right through the floor.2
So I just discovered an awesome feature provided by my mobile provider for only 0.99€ per month.
Yeah, Deep Packet Inspection is only 0.99 extra.
Why should I pay my provider for watching my traffic? Sure, they allert me when downloading viruses, but that is a lame excuse, especially for mobile use.4
My first task as a developer was to make a 20-year-old migrated-to-winforms application with over 1500 forms dpi compatible because apparently someone used it at 125% (acceptable by some law) and it was simply unusable and looked horrendous😩2
So, for a few months, as my finals are comming near, I was wondering is it a good idea to re-format my SSD and put Ubuntu on my laptop.
Reason? So I can't play games on my laptop and focus more on coding.
Downloaded Ubuntu, format, install, I was happy.
Soon as it installed, I downloaded all the sht I need (slack, discord, VSCode, nodejs, pixie dust and unicorns...), and did a 10 minute setup so the OS feels "nice".
After few hours of "trying" to work, I noticed it runs rather slow (vscode keeps freezing, app I'm developing stutters in chrome...), so maybe Ubuntu is being a douche to my laptop.
Downloaded xubuntu, did mostly the same (less work has to be done since xubuntu feels nicer than ubuntu (thanks xfce (mouse <3)), and started doing the same.
I realised that I can't use any of my Logitech stuff (mouse, headset (and by "can't use, I mean I can't use the Logiteh gaming software to set the DPI, mouse speed, buttons, nor set up the headset, so they sound like jack shit)).
Frustrated, I went to fix all the stuff manualy, with no success.
Also, the OS froze 3 times completely.
Luckly, I made a whole Windows 10 backup so I've spent a few hours more just waiting for it to restore.
Oh, did I mention I can't tether my Android device internet via usb on ubuntu?
Do I have so much to learn or this is how my life is going to look like when I start working as a developer?
*insert Sad panda gif here*2
I am sitting here fixing some asshole's fuck up (he went and fucked around with the certificates on the Sonic Wall - now DPI SSL doesn't work anymore and people are wondering why things aren't working as they used to).
I have been offered an opportunity to work in a place that is about 1000 miles from where I currently work. The pay is a bit better, and I get benefits (like health, pension, etc - where here I don't get shit).
The issue is that my family and what not are this side. They are begging me not to leave. They don't know that I have been considered for the job.
Not going to lie, the last time I moved away, I nearly died because I have a family to support, and I was porting all my funds back to them (yeah - the one who cheated).
I am anxious as fuck, and today I have an interview.
I don't know if going is the right thing to do. There is so much opportunity, and I might stuggle for about a year - but is the struggle worth it.
I cannot take it where I am now. They appointed a new guy, and he is monumentally fucking everything up. He also doesn't shut up. Even if you ignore him, or tell him that you are busy - he just goes on and on talking. Fuck my life.
Anyways, will see how things go - I don't know what is right - perhaps it will come to me.
I'll let you guys know what happens, not that anyone might directly care - which is fine.
Time to go fix CA, and then code until I die.1
So we have a teacher who always annoys us with being extremly specific and precise. Today we "learned" how to calculate the scan file size based on the dpi of the scanner and the size if the picture. He began to calculate, and then, he said: "Now we have 1737389 bytes and we gonna divide with 1024 to get the kiloBYTES. This was it. He rants about us everytime because of this shit. I raised my arm slowly, whilw preparing the words in my head. "Excuse me, but you are calculating kibibytes, not kilobytes! To get kilobytes you have to divide with 1000, hence kilo." Then he muttered something about he didnt wanted to write that because of courae he knew about this... One teacher well done please.
So my future isp Jio fiber is rumoured to be using DPI. Main proof comes when a executive said "It’s called Deep Packet Inspection, and what you can do with the analytics of that is mind-boggling," in a new article. https://reuters.com/article/...
Should I be afraid or am I just being paranoid. Also should I just switch to another isp altogether if they are using DPI.
Also mini rant :- They make it harder to use your own router by not allowing bridge mode on their router and custom onts dont seem to work. The best option is to connect lan port of their router to the wan port of your router and disable wifi on their router3
Anybody has a good recommendation for a laptop for mostly full stack web development?
I think I should look for following features:
- minimum 16G ram
- Althought is 2021, just in case, I add: usb C to connect to a dock with two screens and SSD
- I'll run several docker containers at once
- time to time I make non-exhaustive work on c++
- good screen dpi
- I use linux
- portable. No need for the lighter in the market but easy to carry in a bag. Good battery.
- not too expensive
I can save on:
- I don't need the latest processor, just a good one
- I'm not a gamer. I not need the latest GPU. However, some GPU is appreciated. I don't need colorful leds neither.
Do you have any recommendations on laptops and/or features to search for/avoid?8
Virtualbox 6 sucks!
So i'm on a mac and i need some linux goodness on the quick. But the screen resolution stays at 800x600px! On my high dpi screen it's so tiny i need a magnifying glass to do anything on the guest os. And i can't change the resolution nor scale it up for the life of it. Never had that before. Really frustrating!!! 😤5
So really there's no way to use unity on a high DPI monitor in Linux?
I can't believe this is still not implemented..2
Let's be real a second, hiDPI and multiple DPI display support on GNU/Linux (xorg) sucks.
It apparently has better support through Wayland but I hate gnome3 (does KDE implements Wayland? don't really care I don't like it too, way too heavy)2
Have you ever use Ubuntu (or any Linux that use Pango to render text) for a significant amount of time that you notice that text in Mac OS is just not that crisp? To the point that it looks blurry, even more so in non-retina display.
I want to justify buying new Macbook for that sweet M1 silicon, but I don't think I can live with the blurry text. I rarely use built-in display on a laptop, but it is hard to find external monitor with Retina resolution (200+ dpi) with decent size, or ultrawide for that matter.5
Please help me, I need a vertical mouse but the mice I see are trash, they last for a few months, please help.
I need it to have adjustable dpi via software, left/right button/mouse wheel and no more than that.12
Everybody said it's great for gaming within the budget range, gone within a year of use, waste of money or probably defected piece .....but miss that 3200 dpi....5
Not really sure it can be called "dev" technology but I think it fits rather well.
My problem is my 4K screen. You see, I bought this PC around 1 year ago (a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 of those times) and it had the possibility to have a 4K screen and I said myself "Why not? Everything will look so much better!"
Many apps do not work so well with such high DPI and their UI and icons are less then 0.5cm large. It definitely was not worth it.
So my worst dev tech is any app that does not support high DPI or has no ability to change icon size (TexStudio does and I just love it!). Next PC a good old FullHD will suffice.2
ghub piece of shit
damn fucking shitty software. It happened to me in the past(like thrice times) that my mouse got randomly locked at the highest dpi until I uninstalled and reinstalled ghub... well it improved with the time and lately I haven't had that issue anymore, but hey today just for my daily stand up the mic decided to stop working out of the blue(headset is logitech too)... then fuck it didn't have time to troubleshoot that, made my way around using camera mic 🤪
Soon after I finished my meeting, decided to check on ghub to see if the software didn't detect the headset or whatnot... as soon as I tried to open it "ghub is updating", because of course, it can't tell you in any way that you should update it or your devices would not work until you open the goddamned software4
I really would love to buy a microsoft surface pro, went to the store yesterday to try it out ... and I leaved without buying. I hope windows will some day get some nice scaling on high dpi displays like mac OS but till now it looks terrible IMHO!
Even the Icons in the file explorer look better on fullhd then highdpi -.-
