The real battle of distros......😂😂 even till now I have not settled on a Linux distro to use I am always testing them(for 3 years)9

Have you heard about the chicken distro?
Edit: I was joking but it's an actual thing https://launchpad.net/chicken-linux4 -
English is my second language. Today I learned Fedora is not just a Linux distro. It's also a name of a hat.
Guess the old logo made sense.8 -
Deepin Linux. I like you a lot. But the fact that I can't install any software right now means I'm going to leave you.

*FAQ*
Q:why did you make such a great OS.
A:I thought what would attract young users to linux.
This distro even has a song.

Just finished installing Deepin OS on my old laptop as an attempt to get familiar with linux (coming from win10). It looks gorgeous, I got at least four orgasms from the installation process alone. And it comes with lots of cool apps preinstalled (Chrome, Spotify, Steam, etc). So far I'm very happy with it.30

I’m so happy I finally did this on an old imac! Bye macOS! This feels so smooth. Next: Change that to Mint and learn the commands etc.
It feels so f****ng good! If xcode runs on linux I would change that on my main machine too! It’s just much cleaner, faster,... I would never go back.15 -

Do you have a main Linux distro or do you keep switching?
I wish I can stop switching, but I'm never satisfied after using a distro for about 6 months.
First I tried Mint, then Ubuntu, then Kali, and I'm currently using Zorin.
I still have a long list of distros to use, but I'm wondering if anyone else has a certain distro they use or if they're constantly switching.42 -
Idea:

I'm resignating from Arch, Ive used it this week for a school project and as a linux newb- I cant do a lot. I have no clue how to print stuff, where to find my connected networks or how to connect to them etc. I like what it offers and I know it can be good but I'm too new to all of this to effectively use it. BUT I'm not giving up, I'll try Manjaro next as I read that it's newb friendly and I really like how it looks.
Also attached an screen of my Arch setup: i3gaps, plasma and whatnot10 -

What is your story of your first encounter with a Linux Distro?
Here's mine (Slight long version) –
Back in my 8th grade I used to buy Tech magazines that used to have DVDs filled with random updated contents like Audio/Video tools, Wallpapers and other stuff. There used to be this "Linux Distro of the Month" section that I used to ignore because I didn't know what it is.
But one issue of the magazine had a review of this "amazing new" Ubuntu 10.10. I read it and at first I thought it's some kind of theme for Windows (I know). But then I tried it out on my HP Compaq nx6120 which had a pure BIOS. No UEFI shit. Ubuntu came with it's wubi installer and it installed Ubuntu smoothly like a normal software. Later I discovered that it is a completely different operating system that doesn't run anything from my Windows. I was upset about it and I booted back to Windows.
But I never removed it. I felt like exploring what it was and why people use it.
It's almost 9 years later and I'm so glad with what had happened back then.12 -
I have to confess. I'm a distro hopper. I've been a distro hopper ever since last year, and it got me tired. I spend entire hours checking distrowatch, partitioning, setting up hardware and drivers and passwords... I've tried to stop, I swear, but every time I do, there goes a new Solus release, an Openbox Debian based new branch, a forensic floppy disk that I know that I won't ever use for real. I just love assigning swap, fighting with rEFInd icons, testing modules, navigate trough different configs... Oh God, I even set up a virtual OpenBSD, just to see what it can do.
My friends have been telling me to stop, because I don't take care of our relation, that I'm becoming a monster. It's shameful and embarrassing to me when they ask me about my day and I say "you know, installing Manjaro on my desktop, and Lubuntu to that crappy old Asus I have for backups" I think I'm going to lose my head some day, this sickness is driving me straight down to the Slackware pits. I should stop it before I try Ratpoison environment but truth be told; I mean not to stop. I'm a distro hopper.
I ride my way live, unstable and restless.6 -
This year I am gonna install different os and distribution in my laptop.

Medium long story about POP!_OS
TL;DR : A true K.I.S.S. OS. Very well designed UI. In general suitable for everyone. Any distro-hoppers MUST try out. If your current OS is already heavily customized to your needs, DON'T bother with POP. (Read till the end if you are on toilet, nothing to lose)
Backstory : I am never a fanboy of anything although I am loyal to the tools I use daily. So OS is also something I picked and use to meet my needs except when I was a student. My first linux experience was about a decade ago with ubuntu. Have tried almost all kinds of light-weight and minimal distros after that (lubuntu, arch, mint, puppylinux, fedora, centos and others I forgot) during my student years.
I like all things minimal. ("Keep It Simple Stupid" is my email signature.) When I started working, Windows became the sole OS I use since it met my needs better than others. Except that one time when I tried Elementary. Although I found it a good OS, it didn't get installed as a dual-boot. I don't find Elementary minimal. It is one of well designed OSs but I still think it can be improved. (Plus I had this weird feeling that it is similar to Mac OS)
At the start of this year, Widows alone was not enough for my needs. Decided to look for a minimal linux distro. My old i7 ASUS has 8GB RAM and roughly 250GB free storage. So I am not that worried about hardware requirements. My main struggle is downloading stuffs. (Few of you guys must know by now the speed of my internet LOL.) Well, even if I had a good speed, I will still look for minimal distro as first priority. So I went with minimal ubuntu image and xubuntu environment. Although I do not like the UI design, it is acceptable. Through out the years, I have configured it to suit my needs and currently pretty happy with it.
Thoughts on POP!_OS : To me, it is literally like meeting a young girl who is perfect for my life. She has the perfect body, beautiful face, amazing appearance and good manners. And she is young, of course there is a lack of experience issue. But it can be taught and she has a very high chance to become a wonderful lady if she continues like this. Only crap is I already have someone and in a committed relationship. So I could not go any further than introduction. I do save her contact and will keep in touch with her online. You know? Things change. Things always change somehow.2 -
When you're sick of Arch Linux ability to brick your system and you try to install a more stable distro like Linux mint.18

People talking about NVIDIA drivers on Linux and how bad those are. Pretty sure that if I had any recent GTX 1080 I'e be able to actually play Rocket League on any fucking Linux distro. AMD drivers are worse. How the fuck can I have my RX 480 work in 3D applications (read: Rocket League) on any other Linux distro than Ubuntu 16.04? The internet doesn't have a solution for me.11

TIL you can make the smallest implementation of Debian:
Use only busybox and APT
Remove sysd and use busybox init

I got interested in Linux through using custom Roms and kernels on my phone.
And now I want to learn more about it.
Any advice will be appreciated4 -
Hi, my name is bohr and I'm a recovering distro hopper.
It all started with Ubuntu, out of my frustrations with the unintuitive nature of DOS I gravitated to a Unix environment which Ubuntu naturally solved. But I quickly became annoyed with the laggy nature of it's daily usage. So I switched to Linux mint. Loving the HTML/css/js configuration aspect of cinnamon I thought it was the answer to all my problems. But I became annoyed with apt and it's lack of a few programs I wanted. This got me to look into an arch based distro, because pacman seemed like the answer to my problems. Unfortunately there are way too many arch distros to use. I experimented with antegros' many DE options: gnome, kde, i3, deepin, openbox... Always finding something wrong. I tried manjaro and it's many flavors, still being annoyed with minute aspects of the os. Out of frustration, with the deep configuration settings I was getting into and the need to actually focus on the work being done on the computer I crawled back to Linux mint. But now my friends, I have decided that maybe it's time to just use a more established distro? Maybe gnome isn't actually that bad? Maybe I need to give it another try? And that is why, I promise, this is the last hop for me. Arch Linux, Gnome here I come and I'm ready to commit this time!...
But have you guys seen POP!_OS? Woah, I bet it would solve all of my problems....7 -
I'm learning docker and I just started a container running a Linux distro.
What was the first command I run in the container?
rm -Rf / --no-preserve-root3 -
Linux on the 3DS is going well. Others have no issue at all, but I've gotta fix issues with the toolchain executables being named wrong, the provided, precompiled toolchain everyone else uses being the wrong one and being incompatible...
Fuck my life.1 -
What are your favorite distros for Linux? I'm new to Linux so I'm just curious on what's out there that you guys use most and what's most convenient for development! Also can I PLEASE get some upvotes I want an avatar so bad lol8

Hey guys, wanna install Linux first time, but had some doubts.
Config - core 2 duo 2.93GHz, 2GB ddr2 ram, 320 hdd, AMD graphics card.
Doubts :
1. After writing it on usb and setting it in usb boot mode, the system didn't read the pen drive data ... is it because of the writing software ... I used power iso.
2. What about the partitions ? Do they still remain and will the install guide only ask to format the c drive or the whole hdd ?
3. Which distro do y recommend... I had kali/debian/fedora/mint in mind
My friends complained about fedora taking 45 seconds to boot up, I don't know about the other distro's ..
Thanks in advance12 -

It's my yearly cleanup day, when I fully nuke down my windows installation, to clean out all the installed trash and residue.
Have moved all important data and I will be ready to fully refresh my computer as soon as it syncs, heres the question though.
I decided this time I'll create a dev vm, so I can just each time reset to point 0 and also because I miss having local development.
What new linux distros or flavours are out there that would be worth looking at? (I saw things like ubuntu budgie being mentioned)
If you use it and it doesnt break if I sneeze, mention it, I am open to getting to know other environments, even if its not my usual debian homeplace.5 -
Looking for a Linux distro that looks and feels like MacOS. Before you respond, pleeease don't recommend me these:
Elementary OS | Takes forever to update to latest LTS, and the pre-installed software is terrible
Deepin | Severely outdated software repos, and I hate the deepin desktop for many reasons.
Backslash Linux | Under development by devs who don't know what they're doing.
Pear OS | Discontinued
"Setup something yourself" | No, piss off.
This is probably a noob question, but I'm not a linux noob. I want something clean & simple, and I was wondering if someone perhaps found some hidden gem distro that emulates Mac OS, doesn't have outdated software repos, and is maintained by people who know how to use their brain.27 -

I'm going to try to switch over to Linux (dual-boot at first), but I've been trying to figure out which distro to use. Any suggestions?

I keep changing my linux distro, I like to have a taste of all of them. What's your distro and desktop environment right now?17
-
So I finally decided to switch to Linux.
And I need help choosing distro.
I know this is not a good place to ask this, I could just use google. But I want to hear it from you guys, from actual devs whose work with it every day, and not from some ***** bloggers whose barely know what is OS.
So please just write which distro you are using and if you are happy with it. I will be very thankful.36 -
Hey guys, I've decided to remove windows (again) and want to install a distro in its place, can you suggest some?
I'm learning pen testing so Kali is something I used to use on VM, also Ubuntu for random stuff.12 -
@linuxFanboys
I'm getting a Chromebook, and, obviously, I'd rather wget all my webpages before I use chrome as my main os. so any recommendations for distros? I want a good, smooth ui, kinda like what windows was aiming for but so terribly messed up. I want apt package manager, and I wouldn't mind pentesting tools, and it has to be light enough to use on a computer with 4gb ram and 16gb ssd. I assume it's implied with linux, but I want one that's generally consider to be secure. I plan to run android studio (I expect it to be slower than a commodore 64 running windows 10), eclipse, gcc, if that helps. any suggestions? thanks!17 -

I think I may be ending my distro hopping here (for a while anyway). Linux Lite looks pretty good, seems stable, isn't bloated af, works good OOTB (finally, a distro other than Ubuntu in which WiFi works just fine), and is decently hackable. I've been using it on and off for a bit, finally replaced Manjaro with it.8 -
How can I learn to use Linux effectively as a developer? I’m a first-year CS student at university and based on what I’ve read here and on the web, I need to know the Linux system and it’s various distros. Any resources are greatly appreciated 😁5

I am so freaking behind. Just found out today, my dual boot Linux distro was basically a waste of time, because of "Bash on Ubuntu On Windows". Can't wait till I get this thing setup to my liking, and we'll see if it can replace a full distro. (For once not a post bashing Windows 10 lol)7

Did you know that North Korea has its own government approved Linux distro? Well, now you do.

I have dabbled with Linux quite a few times in the past (dual booting with Windows) and I'm looking to get into it again. Any recommendations? Any horror stories?
So far I've daily driven Ubuntu, Mint, Manjaro, and CrunchBang. KDE and Gnome are my go-to DEs.33 -
I have a lot of free time now so time to move from Debian-based to Arch-based distro :D
I simply can't choose so I just picked up Antergos. Heard a good thing or two about Manjaro but eh for now let's just randomly pick.
Once I get familiar with this, probably will move to Arch Linux itself.2 -
Strongly thinking about fully switching to Linux. I love simplicity but also want to use a good looking environment - Any recommendations? (Distro-wise and DesktopEnv-wise)
My current favorite distros (without trying tho) are Manjaro, PopOS, maybe Arch? (not sure how complicated it is, really.)
Coming from Windows, i'd probably use a VM for Photoshop and Lutris for gaming. Anything else will be lovely native :D
Would be nice to hear about your experiences and recommendations! ^^26 -
Which Linux should I use for a dual boot for my PC? It shouldn't be too hard tobuse cause I'm an absolite Linux beginner.22
-
There's a special place in the very bottom corners of hell for whoever programmed the current Debian installer. There's an even special-er place there for people who actually ship their distros with that fucking disability of an installer, Kali Linux and Parrot Security specifically. I'm not booting from USB either because I don't have much space and it's buggy anyway.
Because of it, I can't install any pen testing distro to my PC. There's backbox but it's garbage with very little tools. I can't get wifi to work in blackarch, and there's NOTHING else even worth looking into.
Stop trying to make gold out of shit. Re-spin your distros with Ubuntu instead, which is a Debian derivative by people who actually use their brain. Let Debian die a painful death because it's maintainers do not give a fuck about their work. I can't be in the minority here. Even Linus Torvalds said he hated Debian and that was a long time ago but my point still stands, maybe.18 -
A few months ago I switched from Windows 10 to Arch Linux on my main computer and the upgrade is incredible. I knew it would be, of course - I already had Linux on my laptop. But wow, on a dual monitor setup, and with the motivation to set it up nicely, it's brilliant.
My question is, what's everyone's favourite Linux distro, and why? Pictures of your desktops would be cool.4 -
It's really hard to explain what is Linux, after someone normal user see my laptop and ask what's windows is this 😶3

I mean I use Ubuntu in my daily life but let's accept that most of the Linux distros (for desktop of course) has hickups. So a few months ago I got a computer with Windows 10 on it, and kind of ditched the shitty laptop that had Ubuntu (I loved Ubuntu, fucking despised the laptop, since keys were sticky or missing and it couldn't last a few minutes off the charger) so just now I decided to try Linux Elementary, since I'm getting sick and tired of Win10!
Don't judge me, I'm not skilled enough for Arch...6 -
Heard about the Linux from scratch project. I dream of building a district from the ground up .

How hard will that be 🤐🤐19 -
YAS!
I've convinced my brother to try the Linux. Now I have to choose for him simple to use distro. I was thinking Linux Mint, but I don't really know if I should get him Cinnamon or MATE.8 -
I've seen posts about Manjaro quite a lot recently. Just wondering:
How many of us are using Manjaro as daily usage system. And why not other?
For me it is because it connects ease of use of Ubuntu (or even Win) with possibilities of Arch. And I always liked KDE. Plus it works out of the box, with Nvidia drivers ready and stuff.question operating system os manjaro kde 😍 distro kde ubuntu linux manjaro system kde plasma linuxxx2 -

Thinking about installing a Linux distro on my home computer as the second OS. Any recommendations on which distro to use? I'm not a total beginner, I just haven't used any desktop environments for Linux yet. I'm currently having a look at Arch + Budgie - any previous experiences?6

just receive a refurbished 4 years old laptop.... then deep clean it.... now having dilemma on picking a distro......
mainly use to run data analysis (r, Python, Java, C++, mySQL, MongoDB and some cloud servers...)
my thinking about a good distro to me, comfortable appearances, customize freedom, community support and constant security update.
any suggestion people??6 -
So you got new sdd and you want to try someone new slick distro. So you google slick distro and you find a blog.
You download 4 to 5 iso. Now you want to make a bootable pendrive, but you don't have pendrive. So you use your 1TB HDD. And you accidentally format the whole HDD. Now you install one by one all iso. You don't like single os you revert back to the original OS. And you have wasted your whole day.
List of distro I installed:
1) Deepin OS
2) Solus OS
3) Nitrux
4) Ubuntu 17.10
5) Pop OS (Orignal OS)10 -
What do you guys use to manage your Linux configuration files?
I have loads of files comming from desktops and servers. Sometimes I store it in a text file .. sometimes I make a sip of the dir. This leaves me with random configs scattered everywhere. Just looking for some best practices. I have had suggestions to use git in the past.
p.s I am not taking about passwords here.5 -

Need some advice
I haven't really dived into Linux much but know my way around it.
I've tried Ubuntu and fedora but like to try more. Following are the ones most appealing to me after Googling
-Debian
-Arch
-Elementary os
-Semicode os - comes with a lot of development related packages pre installed. Like a lot of them.
If anyone has tried any of them please share your experience.
I want to move to Linux the more I use Windows.18 -
Is there a Linux distribution without a lot of problems with Nvidia drivers? I'm currently using elementary os, because I like the look of it, but I'm getting a lot of graphical glitches and black screens all the time and I was wondering if changing to another distro would help. Is elementary is known for graphical glitches, or is it just the Nvidia drivers? I've also turned my display manager into a mess while trying to customise my login screen, so it might be a good time to change to another distribution. Any recommendations? And one more thing, just out of curiosity, can you install multiple distributions and use the same home directory if home is mounted on a separate partition?15

Going to go on another distro jumping spree but think I'm going to install stock Ubuntu 18.04 on my actual system (Just want to see if it can change my opinion on ubuntu because last physical install i did was the release of 14.04).
Throw me your suggestions to give a gander!
(Also #IUseArch so don't worry, that has firmly been tested, broken, fixed and then fucked beyond reconcile)12 -
So, since I messed with Elementary OS so much that it yearns for the sweet release of death and Windows 10 stopped connecting to the Internet, I now want to format them both and install Arch and Windows 8.1, respectively.
However, if my Arch installation fails (again), what distro should I install?
I am leaning towards Arch-based (I ADORE the AUR) and Debian-based distros, and have used, in this order: Linux MInt, Debian with Gnome 3 (I despise this DE), Antergos(can't get Manjaro to boot off of a USB drive) and Elementary OS (which was a thorough disappointment).20 -
Do any of you have experience with Redcore-Linux, or Gentoo in general.
I'm looking for a new distro to try next and this seems quite interesting. -
Any suggestions for a good beginner linux distro? Ive been looking at Elementary and Ubuntu, but im needing something that can still use the laptop touchscreen.
Any suggestions?4 -
Ok, I’ve decided. I have a really old laptop that I love but is only usable for basic surfing and text editing, so I’m gonna put a Linux distro on there to experiment.

I've been distro hopping for a while now, and I can't settle on one. I'm stuck using a netbook with Intel Atom and 1GB RAM right now, any suggestions for a sexy, lightweight, and feature rich distro that won't run like shit?
I've already had Xubuntu, Debian, Arch, Kali, Elementary OS, and Puppy Linux.7 -
Its time to do some distro-hopping again.
Current candidates are Funtoo and Void Linux.
Any recommendations or other comments are appreciated.5 -
I'm fairly new to linux and wanted to ask what's the best linux distro(?) to have for web development that can dual boot with Windows (can't really remove windows since there's some applications I need there RIP...)12

I am thinking about installing a Linux Distribution on my Pc... I can't decide between Ubuntu or Debian. Which one would you recommend for a Linux beginner or would you recommend a complete different distro? :-)7

Short but sweet:
why doesn't linux mint (an Ubuntu-based distro) fucking trim SSDs by default? Ubuntu doesn't do it by default either!9 -
Best Linux distro for NodeJS back end projects? Maybe I have to work with docker or VMs. I currently have Ubuntu Mate but I want to change. I have 8Gb of RAM and performance is what I need.

I'm a full stack developer, I have been using windows all my life but I purchased a new laptop recently, it has only 4gigs of RAM and I will upgrade it in the future but that's gonna take a while but mean while its running windows and its a pain in the ass! Memory is always almost full, disk(HDD 5400rpm) usage is 100% when I don't expect it to be. Chrome and VSCode hogs my memory and the laptop lags like crazy because of that webstorm and pycharm are all out of the question. I'd like to switch to a Linux distro, dual boot it since my windows is a genuine copy. Which Linux distro would be the best for me?9

Got a replacement laptop last Friday after I sent the other back for a repair and installed arch (manjaro) but I think im gonna go back to Fedora which I had on before with xfce4

How do I choose the right distro?
I have a new DevOps job. For that I may switch to a Linux distro of my choice.
I am struggling to make the choice between Manjaro and latest Fedora WS.
I primarily use XFCE and bspwm.
And my job involes a lot of automation tools, docker, kubernettes, python3, tcp dump and some shell scripting.17 -
Creating a partition for Kali or new version of Ubuntu. I know a lot of devs say Ubuntu is the Windows of Linux, but I kind of like it2

Ok, so I'm a daily Linux user, recently I've been using Antergos, but there are certain things that haven't been working for me. I'm looking for a Linux distro with sane defaults and with which I can have peace of mind in the security aspect (Fuck Canonical and Redhat), any recommendations?4

Virtualbox 6 sucks!
So i'm on a mac and i need some linux goodness on the quick. But the screen resolution stays at 800x600px! On my high dpi screen it's so tiny i need a magnifying glass to do anything on the guest os. And i can't change the resolution nor scale it up for the life of it. Never had that before. Really frustrating!!! 😤5 -
tl;dr Which new laptop + Linux distro combo should I get when seeking for minimal configuration and maintenance hassle?
Hey devRant gang!
I'm looking for a new laptop: which one is supported out-of-the-box by Ubuntu based Linux distros like Elementary OS?
Why Elementary OS you ask? Well, I want to move away from macOS and/but keep the minimal (and pretty) design/interface!
But: I don't want to waste time configuring stuff after install or a kernel update. I don't have time for that: I need to get shit done.
As much as I dislike closed source/evil corporate stuff the fact of the matter is that my MacBook Pro Just Works (and lets me get shit done).3 -
Hi,
I want to install linux besides windows on my new computer (i7-8700k, gtx 1080). I use debian with i3 on my laptop for work and want to have a similar development environment at home. Does anyone have an adive to choose between ElementaryOS and Arch, or just stick with Debian. i3-gaps will be the wm, I just can't use another one ;)
Does one distro has better support for Nvidia cards in fact I would like to try CUDA.
I do not have other requirements; mostly webdev with python in the backend, and a little c++ game with SDL. This should not be a problem in a new distro.
Thanks for some advices and pro/cons11 -
What Linux distro is simple to use but is still light and customizable? I'm kind of an amateur in all of this, I need a starting point14
-
First laptop I ever owned (around a decade old) continues to live, just in another form. After the first 6 years, the battery died, half the keyboard doesn't work, and the monitor began to fail.
But it still works, so I have decided to give it new life. Gonna make it a new body, add an SSD, new battery, substitute screen, replace keyboard... Maybe this is too costly. No, it must be done.
Finally install a lightweight Linux distro. It shall be glorious!2 -
For my next internship, i need a Linux distro, which is easy to use and which doesn't need a Lot of resources while using it in Oracle Virtualbox.
Which distro would you prefer, i think About ubuntu but I'm afraid that it would use to much of my limited resources so that it is nearly impossible to code with it.4 -
**There should be a search bar on DevRant to search for already answered questions.**
I wanted to ask the community what Linux distro I should use and I know there are tons of questions like this one.
I want something fast, without bloatware and easy to use/fast to set-up, etc.
I'm using Linux Mint, which I quite like, but I just wanted to know if there's something better (e.g: Manjaro, maybe?)
Thank you and I'm sorry for the duplicate question.15 -
I have been introduced to linux with debian.
Im quite comfortable with it. But i would like to change to a similar distro that is a tiny bit more complex.
Suggestions?9 -

Hello my fellow dev ranters! I've been speaking with my dad and he has been complaining about how slow is his old windows machine. I was thinking of move it to a Linux distro, but I don't know which.
The machine has 2gb of ram, about 200gb os disk, a ati radeon 2400 gpu and a intel dual core.
With these specs and taking into account that the final user is a person that mostly uses the pc for web browsing, sports stream and movies. What would be a good, lightweight and simple to use linux distro?
Thank you in advance!4 -
Question for those running Linux on a Dell XPS 13 with a 4k display. What distro do you use? I tried using Ubuntu 16 but had to uninstall it due to absolutely terrible battery life and heat.
Ive been doing fine using the Linux subsystem for windows, but I kinda wanted to give Linux another go and dual boot just for the heck of it.7 -
So what Linux distribution do you guys use for regular usage, development and stuff..
I'm currently on Linux mint, planing to upgrade to a more PRO distribution for the heck of it...17 -

i'll make an important choice so i have to choose a distro between those too:
1.Kubuntu

Hi there
Every few months I switch my Linux distro, currently I’m having a look at Manjaro.
I really like it so far, but there’s one thing that sucks freaking donkey balls..
Everything works perfectly until I shutdown.
On shutdown the whole OS freezes.
Although Manjaro is known for its big and new-to-arch friendly community, I didn’t find many posts about this problem and if I did, the questions were not answered.
Any ideas?3 -

Would you use or to bring an old PC back to life and do some basic testing on it?1 -
Probably this was asked before many times but I want your updated opinion.
1) What is the best Linux distro you used? Why?
2) Do you still use it? If not, why?
My answer:
1) Debian. Because I find it very comfortable and it run in Raspberry Pi and other small computers. It has the software that I usually use and it's very light.
2) Yes but not as my main OS because the lastest version of software that I use weren't updated yet (and probably they won't update them on a short time). I had to move to W10 as my main OS.6 -

Does anyone here knows some efficiant way for stupid Broadcom wifi card to work efficiant on linux? Its Bcm43142. It's rather a question. I am thinking of changing my Linux distro from Lubuntu to Arch Linux or Gentoo.
My main reason is that I want to achieve customizability and the freedom that Linux offer and also build my distro from ground up.
Second reason is that I want to switch a little bit I am using Lubuntu for 2-3 years and is worked great for me. Especially because I have an older laptop (Asus K53E) and windows 7 worked really slow on it. But with this distro, everything works much faster and has all features and tools for programming that I need despite being minimalistic.
I have also used other distros before this one. These are some of them that I can remember Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Mint, Bodhi Linux.
I would say for myself that I am quite familiar with terminal and I also wrote some bash scripts on complexity level like these: https://github.com/RokKos/..., https://github.com/RokKos/...
But my main concern is that would fail to install any of this two distros or that I would damage my computer beyond repair...
So my main questions are:
What are you experience with this two distros?
Did you have any troubles installing and setting up distro?
What is overall experience with this two distros?
Was is worth to switch to any of these two?
And you could also share what distro you are using and maybe some rants that occur using them.14 -

What is up with the trend of people using arch & manjaro linux lately? I've just been noticing that trend recently, especially on here6

now i know this is devrant and not su-rant or sysadminrant or anything alike,
but it cringes me everytime i see rants like "linux this" or "linux that".
now those who does it, do understand that the term "linux" refer to the kernel and not the os in it's entirety, right?6 -

It may not be the place to do so but I need your opinions.
I already said that but I would like to switch from Windows to Linux but I don't know which distrib to choose. For long time I was up to some Debian/Ubuntu but now I feel like going Arch ou Deepin.
Have you guys tried some of those? Do you liked it?
And please, I'm not trying to start world war three here! Have a little "courtoisie" and please be gentle with me I'm still a noob in all this (already tried Ubuntu tho' and didn't liked the Gnome graphics).7 -

A FuckFace guy today did this
FuckFace and I both hate Apple
FuckFace hates Apple blindly and hates everything related to Apple and can't even justify shit
I hate Apple for their stupid decisions
Then we meet a guy who is a friend of our boss I started to tell him how I don't like apple and I leave the conversation
FuckFace enters the conversation stupidly makes some fucking stupid comments make the other guy angry and now our boss is telling us shit about how we should not do this and not do fucking that
I had nothing to do with this shit I am gonna stab FuckFace tomorrow
So in our CS community specially from where I come from ($ecurity) people, we have long debate about how Linux is superior from those Mac and other Apple line ups
I mean I use Linux everyday as my primary OS for CTF for coding and basically everything.
But can we fucking for once acknowledge that Mac people have better UI than us?
Like go to the gnome theme store for god sake we have fucking top 10 filled with various kinds of flavors of apple UI from icons of la capitaine to mc cruise gtk3 themes
But still people blindly hate everything about apple
I mean I hate their overpriced ass and other stuff too but the UI IS SAUCE
Linux peeps no hate though
Apple peeps you guys are going to tangle in your dongle's one day 😊9 -
i've been using debian with xfce for 2 years, and i'm now planning to migrate to arch with xmonad for some freshness. i'm reluctantly peeking out of my comfort zone and sniffing like a cat, any tips appreciated.
