Me: Can I have PhpStorm please.
Company: Is it free?
Me: No, but it's the best php IDE out there. It's a huge productivity boost and also helps avoiding bugs while refactoring.
Company: Nope. Use Zend Studio 9.
Company: We paid money for it like two years ago.
Me: <contemplating life and my decision to ever work there>
To whomever it may concern: Zend Studio is the commercial brother of Eclipse PDT, which also is one of the most shittiest idea out there. Almost as bad as Netbeans for php.
You have all the problems you had with eclipse, and none of the features of phpstorm. Zend Studio does not help you to get work done. It is a constant hindrance, everything you achieve you achieve despite its usage.20
Till today I was programming everything in Notepad++. I thought that I don't need an IDE... I thought I would be freer without one.
When I saw that students could apply for a JetBrains student Pack I took the Opportunity, applied and became a student license. I just wanted to check PhpStorm out.
I downloaded PhpStorm and holy shit! I totally love this IDE. Screw NotePad. I linked it to GitHub and my local server. It is supporting me so much. I was so stupid for using Notepad++ all the time...
Long story short: I have to learn so many hotkeys now.22
How could I only name one favorite dev tool? There are a *lot* I could not live without anymore.
I have to talk to external API a lot and curl is painful to use. HTTPie is super human friendly and helps bootstrapping or testing calls to unknown endpoints.
grep|sed|awk for for json documents. So powerful, so handy. I have to google the specific syntax a lot, but when you have it working, it works like a charm.
Finding strings in projects has never been easier. It's fast, it has meaningful defaults (no results from vendors and .git directories) and powerful options.
Lifesaver. Nough said.
And tweak your command line to show the current branch and git to have tab-completion.
# Jetbrains flavored IDE
No matter if the flavor is phpstorm, intellij, webstorm or pycharm, these IDE are really worth their money and have saved me so much time and keystrokes, it's totally awesome. It also has an amazing plugin ecosystem, I adore the symfony and vim-idea plugin.
Strong learning curve, it really pays off in the end and I still consider myself novice user.
Chrome plugin to browse the web with vi keybindings.
# bash completion
Enable it. Tab-increase your productivity.
# Docker / docker-compose
Even if you aren't pushing docker images to production, having a dockerfile re-creating the live server is such an ease to setup and bootstrapping the development process has been a joy in the process. Virtual machines are slow and take away lot of space. If you can, use alpine-based images as a starting point, reuse the offical one on dockerhub for common applications, and keep them simple.
I will post this now and then regret not naming all the tools I didn't mention.
What's your favourite IDE? 😁
I'm currently working with Emacs and it's great! (But Sublime Text is still beautiful)21
Didn't realize how much I got used to PHPStorm until I used VS Code for a personal project and got errors from forgetting to manually add my Use statements. :P2
This type of post might be good for a weekly rant (if it has not been done yet) "Most Bizarre bug"
So I am working with laravel and vuejs and I use phpstorm as my IDE and today I had the MOST bizarre bug. I'm working on a cryptocurrency website and I'm making a vue component that is going to be a stratum generator for miners and I wanted to make it a component in vue so it can be used anywhere in the site. So I wanted to call the component "StratumGenerator.vue" and i didnt think that this would be an issue. Oh boy was I wrong. So immediately my syntax highlighting did not work nor did emmet autocomplete which is something I can't work without. So i go on for about an hour to fucking figure out how to fix jetbrains vuejs syntax plugins and a very long story short it was because THE FUCKING NAME WAS "StratumGenerator.vue" LITERALLY ANY OTHER NAME WORKS
I've checked its not a blacklisted keyword Stratum and Generator work fine on there own its also not a length thing so right now I have not a fucking clue on why it does not work but i'm glad I figured out.8
Spent like 5 hours today installing, configuring, and playing with phpstorm. first time I've used a real ide type program and wow, I replaced 5 programs with this I would use at the same time.
filezilla (ftp), rapidphp (code), mysql workbench, cmd prompt (node, gulp, sass), and source tree (git)6
My 2 cents on IDEs: they are wonderful and make development speed outrageously quick but for junior developers, I think some of them can be too large of a handicap. I have been using php storm with my symfony framework projects for two years now. I've recently started using vs code and I can't believe how much more I'm actually having to understand the structure of my program to get things done. I've been so use to the highest degree of auto completion that I have not even bothered truly learning the inner structure of the apis I'm using (google, fullcontact, office 365) cause I'm so use to putting something like $calendarevent-> and getting a list of everything I could ever want. It might just be me but actually looking over my apis structure and my projects structure to decide my next approach has made me think more and learn so much more about what I'm actually working on. Also I think ide git tools are a major crutch and junior developers should learn to utilize gits command line and all the options it offers.3
Recently changed my main editor from Coda 2 to PhpStorm, curious as to what everyone else uses as their primary editor/IDE? 🤔34
Who else noticed Jetbrains is selling the exact fucking same IDE a bunch of times with different plugins? Intellij Idea is essentially the same IDE as Gogland or PHPStorm, just with different plugins, yet they want money for every single IDE separately...8
IDE battle--- what is everyone using?
My main languages are- C# - laravel - node/angular - HTML/ CSS. And use git / aws.
I have used the following- and like / hate them all. :) but I want to see what others are using and opinions on them.
Visual studio- bla...
Sublime 2 & 3
Coda(s) 2 - 2.5
I've been a user of NetBeans IDE for PHP for quite sometime. I use it both at work and at home for personal projects. Lately I haven't done many personal projects so I fired it up on my Mac only to find it utilising 100% of all my CPU cores. This has always been an issue with NetBeans for years and it just seems like they can't be bothered to fix it.
So now I'm on the search for a replacement. At work now I use PHPStorm, but the $200 yearly license for small personal projects is a bit much. So for the time being I'm going to be trying out Atom with the ide-php package. It's a shame really as NetBeans is one of the good IDEs out there, but it's such a resource hog that I'm not sure how people can do any work on it.4
I love intellij phpstorm because it’s powerful and saves lots of time, but fuck... Sometimes it’s suggestor is just so stupid.
For example, you write variable’s name ($example) which was already defined in scope before, and you get first suggestion ‘http_response_status’ which is not even a variable.
What the fuck jetbrains?2
Looking for a easy to learn and well developed ide for php and wordpress development. Atom phpstorm and zend arr on my list and money isn't really an issue.5
Alright I gotta ask IDE or Text Editor for development... and you care to WHY? I haven't found any rant on this subject yet and I'm curious what you ranters use!
Personally I use an IDE and more specifically Intellj suite for development
RubyMine, PHPStorm, and Android Studio for all my dev work for debugging, refactoring, and code completion to name a few.7
Are there any good plugins/tools or something for visual studio 15 to turn it into a good IDE for PHP developing?
I'm using Brackets now, i tried Eclipse, PhpStorm (too slow and only a 30 day trial) and Atom so far. But idk, theres always something that makes me thinking like "nah.. thats not the right for me". Now i wanted to try VS. I used it for C++ developing and was pretty much in love with it.10
A couple of months ago I bought a two year licence for PHPStorm but shortly after I started this new job as React Web developper and everyone in my new team has been using Visual Studio Code with a specific set of plugins and settings which make I my premium IDE useless.
What an investment I did.7
woow PHPStorm is such an incredibly buggy piece of shit .... how can anyone work with such a buggy IDE?
It randomly looses settings on restart. A lot of functionality is just so poorly tested. Anyone ever really tried to work with the integrated DB tool?
Or the CSV plugin? there are countless bugs in both usability and function-wise.
But I guess that's because it's just plugins ... you know .. you don't need to use them ...
Is the PHP code formatter a plugin too? Guess I don't have to use it at all, if it randomly scrambles whole lines if I format with a missing } or some other improper syntax. Right, overall it's my fault, right??
Fuck you PHPStorm, and you IntelliJ too. you're not better at all.12
Which is the best ide? I try with sublime text 3 and phpstorm, both are very different and comfortable, but I preefeeri sublime7
