"Hey, Root, someone screwed up and now all of our prod servers are running this useless query constantly. I know I already changed your priorities six times in the past three weeks, but: Go fix it! This is higher priority! We already took some guesses at how and supplied the necessary code changes in the ticket, so this shouldn't take you long. Remember, HIGH PRIORITY!"
1. I have no idea how to reproduce it.
2. They have no idea how to reproduce it.
3. The server log doesn't include queries.
4. The application log doesn't include queries.
5. The tooling intercepts and strips out some log entries the legendary devs considered useless. (Tangent: It also now requires a tool to read the logs because log entries are now long json blobs instead of plain text.)
6. The codebase uses different loggers like everywhere, uses a custom logger by default, and often overwrites that custom logger with the default logger some levels in. gg
7. The fixes shown in the ticket are pretty lame. (I've fixed these already, and added one they missed.)
8. I'm sick and tired and burned out and just can't bring myself to care. I'm only doing this so i don't get fired.
9. Why not have the person who screwed this up fix it? Did they quit? I mean, I wouldn't blame them.
Why must everything this company does be so infuriatingly complicated?11 -
Medium Article Title: How to Optimize Your Use of the Terminal
Dev: Oh goody.
Article Content: The terminal is a cli that devs use in order to work at their jobs. It is a very important tool in which… (continued)

Manager: We really need to save money with this project, so nobody call tech support for anything.
Me: There's this open-source solution that would work great.
Manager: Bad idea! There's no tech support number to call.

Companies who geo block their sites for no fucking reason can go fuck themselves.
So a bunch of retarded pharmacies in India, geo block hits from anywhere outside of India.
A thousands of Indians are living abroad with their parents and family living in India.
Imagine, I have to order medicines for my parents since they are not very tech savvy and I cannot do that because some rotten brained guava thought that it's a good idea to geo block access.
What is the fucking point in doing so? There are many such companies, especially Indian who do so. I have keep toggling my VPN because of this.30 -
Couple years ago, in an Indian web dev company I worked at, the management decided it would be a good idea to ask all employees to "justify their salary" and submit their answers via email.
(You read that right)
70% workforce submitted their resignation the same day, resulting in the HR (who came up with this idea) getting fired on the spot.
Good times.8 -
My boss, delusional as always and getting worse every week, conveys the news that eight interns have been taken on. Without asking us seniors if that would be a good idea.
Us: ”who should, you know, actually help these good people out?”
Boss: ”we will have to work that out”
Us: ”we don’t have the time actually to do this without seriously pushing deadlines forward”
Boss: ”we will have to work something out so that this does not happen”
Us: ”soo, we don’t have to actually help these guys and girls once they are here?”
Boss: ”no, they obviously need a lot of help. What we do here are really complex”

So I went out to a country bar with some friends to dance... and my friend told some random dude I was a developer for some reason and he approached me with his grand idea for an app...😂4

!dev What pisses me off about today's job market is that the following idea is a naive one:
Let's just find a junior position and learn on the job so you can demonstrate your skills to your employer so they can promote you.
Wroooong. Reality: They only hire the most gifted geniuses who already know everything and they don't have the budget for someone who is rusty.
Welcome to the modern world of the CompSci market, where you are expected to have expert level knowledge in every language, especially in Software Engineering and Algorithms. And if you don't remember how to write an efficient Comparator algorithm in under 3 minutes, you're screwed.
Yaay.6 -
I met my girlfriend via online dating and she is often checking out recipes on social media, so I came up with the idea to combine cooking and Tinder as a tiny side project.
I built an app that lets you swipe recipes to add them to your cookbook and called it "Daily Cook" and it is available on both Android and iOS. :)13 -
Ask questions during interview.
Ask about trainings - it's usually a good sign when company offers training budget. Ask about specifics - sometimes it's a shared pluralsight account, and nothing else, which means that that had an idea and half assed it into existence.
Ask tech recruiter about overtime, a good sign is when they have no idea or say that it must be budgeted and scheduled - it means that it does not happen often.
Ask if it is possible to select and change projects, and how often it happens - if often, it may be bad low level management, or people learning new things and jumping between projects.
Also make sure to ask about rules for promotions and pay rises. Good company wił have a clear set of rules in place.
All of the above apply to mid to large companies.
For small company, i'm sure it will be different.3 -
✨ I created a cli tool that brings my GitHub feed right to my terminal.
It's just a fun idea that I had since I have this habit of checking my github feed every now and then. So made this tool to do it right from my working terminal.
The project is open-sourced in Github

Software is such an awe inspiring concept if you really think about it. We literally create our own reality from scratch. Binary for the wrong architecture? Don't worry we can emulate it. Network? Fully software defined. Heck, the servers don't even know if it's real or all in software. You know what? Fuck it! The machine isn't real either! All virtualized or software emulated
I'm really bad at putting things into words but the idea of software truly amazes me6 -
"LeT's uSe gRaPhQL!" They said.
"It EliMinAtEs cOmpLeX aNd vErBoSe REST coDe!" they said.
Me sitting here for hours waiting for the backend team to fix major regressions every time they push the smallest "updates" to staging... 🤡
Call me a boomer but I can't help but feeling graphQL makes things MORE complex than REST... either that or the backend devs have no idea what they are doing17 -
Who had the braindead idea to program the alarm clock to run on system time instead of local time. My clock adjusted automatically 2h while travelling but the alarm didn't! So im now awake 2h too early!7

Being a Woman in Tech® is exhausting because every time we know something a male superior doesn’t, we have to end our statements with “but maybe I’m wrong, what do you think?” so they feel like it’s their idea and take the topic seriously.
I used to be adamantly against this type of coddling but they beat it out of me. You can only be straightforward and confident a finite number of times before you’re pulled aside and told you’re “cocky,” “arrogant,” “irritating,” etc. So many of us use this strategy to avoid those labels, but it’s a tiring part of the job we shouldn’t have to think about.26 -
I was working with a guy 3 years ago, he was junior web developer. Lazy for work, watching YouTube and game streamers all day long at the office. Sometimes i was fixing his crappy code.
And ... one week ago I was surprised seeing this guy come to my current work office as senior web developer.
Im also new at this office and i had good impression i was working with professionals before this happened. Guess what... This guy hasnt changed much. Still writes crappy code , no idea of clean code at all.
I got concerns about my work place now :/ thinking to change it.6 -
Now realizing the whole "Fuck this shit, I'm gonna become a barista" was literally a midlife crisis.
Now, how do I find my way back to a brand new PhD application? Or a research job... Or a dev job... Honestly, I'd take whatever.
Side note, after weeks of being on my feet and working 6-8 hours a day, I have lost exactly zero kilos. This was a very bad idea. 🤦
So, I'm not the smartest, but at least now I have had two careers. How many of you can say that you've had two different careers in your life, eh?11 -
Let's start 2023 !
WHO THE FUCK imagined that having language like YAML is a good idea ??
Fuck you and your spaces. No editor produce any decent errors messages except "Your spaces are wrong".
When you edit an Azure debops pipeline, it's just 5 min ti do thing, 35 minuites to figure ou where to add/remove spaces.
NO, I WILL NOT read 25 pages of documentation to add a single step into pipeline.
Fuck YAML !29 -
We've had a bunch of flaky tests in our repo for a while now that no one could be bothered to fix; we'd just re-run ci until it's green. Today I looked into it and I was inspired to make this meme, because I lived through it.
Adding logs to investigate just lowered the fail rate making investigation more difficult. I do have an idea of what it might be though so, we'll see tomorrow.3 -
* Calls themselves "Software Engineer"
* Doesn't know what a thread is.
I swear these coding boot camps are churning out code monkeys whose real skill is building shitty React apps.
I believe a CS degree is necessary if you want to work on something more than CRUD applications.
Nothing against devs without degrees, but at least make an effort because my head will explode next time I have to explain to someone what a thread is and why it's a very bad idea to run blocking code on the main thread.27 -
My CS teacher uses html 4 spec that has shit like <strong> and <font size=5> and all sorts of inline garbage. She writes the tags in ALL CAPS and it honestly looks like SQL had a baby with brainfuck. I can't handle this shit anymore. She feels like she's apparently very good at programming and has just been promoted to the School's CS HOD (Head of Department). I have no idea what to do I go to school everyday having to face her mutilating my interest in programming. My peers are all incompetent and don't care at all. Don't get me started on how she writes Python. What the fk man.32

I don't think I've ever had a bad drunk coding experience. Most of my nightmares involve being sober and doing this thing called "my job", which just seems like a terrible idea before I've even begun.

Not all Asians are the SAME. Let me explain, I got a coworker who goes by the name "Lau Dum Fuk" (which I learnt that it is pronounced "loud doom fok"). I was so stupid that I pronounced his name as "Loud Dumb Fuck" very awkward. I am Asian but I pronounced Asian name wrong . Who started with the idea that all Asian are the same?16 -
??????????????????? What??????
???? What???????
I couldnt solve a bug for hours.
Hours of googling.
Hours of mental trainwreck.
Hours of stress.
1:28 am.
I cant solve it.
HOLD ON I HAVE AN IDEA.
ChatGPT AI. HELP ME.
i copy and pasted the part of code thats bugging me. Keep in mind that this is a VERY large and robust system and this is just tiny percentage of code.
I told the AI to help me fix this shit bug.
ChatGPT literally explained me what the bug is as if im retarded and wrote code how to fix it.
LOOK AT THE SCREENSHOT U CANT EVEN MAKE THIS SHIT UP
HOW????18 -
CTO: Research, problem analysis, customer need validations, and data based prioritisation is stupid.
Me: So, then why should we solve this problem?
CTO: Because my team invests a lot of time in here (read "because we build a shitty system in past without thinking and we are doing it again").
Me: I don't see this as a good idea.
CTO: I become emotional when I request product to align and they don't. We must solve this problem and not what customers want.
Me: I am not participating here.
CTO: And I want you to work on weekends to support my team.
Me: *disconnects*3 -
Me: Instead of doing X we could do Y, that would be better.
Boss: No, bad idea we keep doing X.
a few months later
Someone external: You could do Y
Boss: That is a great idea. lets do Y.6 -
WTF is the point a
of auto-generated documentation. Some dude litterally thought it was a good idea to read the code and write the exact same shit differently. WTF IS THE POINT!?
Documentation takes work, sorry, stop being lazy.11 -
That log4j RCE is some fucking nasty business!!! Its exploits have already been observed multiple times in our company scope.
Time for some unplanned Saturday evening hot-patches :/
P.S. Why the fuck leave such a feature enabled as default??? I mean really, whose brilliant idea was "let's leave the message parser enabled as well as the LDAP query hooks... BY FUCKING DEFAULT!!!"
I mean really, is anyone using that? ANYONE?
And then they laugh at me when I say "stay away from frameworks", "use as little libraries as possible", "avoid foreign code in your codebase",...
you know what.... JOKE'S ON YOU!10 -
I'm convinced that playing the piano has allowed me to type faster and commit keyboard shortcuts to muscle memory faster too. While coding isn't about typing quickly, there's a whole bunch of times when I've had an idea, and had to get that down into code as quickly as possible before I forget it - and that's when I really find fast keyboard work comes into its own.5
-
I'm seriously having a lot of fun with ChatGPT and learning a whole bunch of things I didn't know before. The ease of asking it questions and getting a general idea on things is amazing.
Bye bye to my job, but at least I'll know a bunch of different things, I guess 😂11 -
Some recruiter just reached out on LinkedIn to talk about a job opportunity with me.
I suggested he give me an idea of the pay range before i proceed and talk to anyone in the company so we dont waste eachothers time.
He said they can realistically pay X/month.
I explained that X is less than half my current salary (Y) so i wont proceed with this.
He replied by saying "oh nice, thats a great salary for your experience"
WTF is that supposed mean? did the bitch say im underqualified to get paid my current salary?10 -
Today teaching the product managers what the channel in "selected for development" in Jira means.
Guess what? IT MEANS THE FEATURE IS READY TO BE DEVELOPED ON, NOT SOME HALF-BAKED CROCK POT IDEA WITH A TWO-SENTENCE DESCRIPTION DESCRIBING ABSOLUTELY FUCK ALL!!!1 -
I appreciate Minecraft and Minecraft mods. Teaching kids to eat tasty animals, and make glue from blood. There is a mod the literally makes glue by putting horses in a smelter. You can even heal the horse and keep it alive indefinitely. In constant agony. lol
Although, the idea that you can sustainably produce energy from wood is a bit suspect. Thankfully mods jumped in with nuclear reactors for real power generation.10 -
Dragging my significant other to devrant is totally a good idea and I will hear nothing contrary to that. 😐11

Phone call with random guy:
"Hi I have an awesome idea for a mobile app that's going to change the world. I just don't know how to program it."
Me: "cool, let's set up a meeting to hash out the details and discuss the project & costs"
Guy: "I was hoping you would be able to do it for 10% equity, it's gonna make millions!"
Me: "Facepalm"6 -
"not sure if we can meet those salary requirements, but I'll get back to you"
JK they just send me the code challenge, no idea of what salary to expect. scratch that one off the list.
meanwhile in another prospect i have had not just multiple interviews, but then add on two additional 'prep' and 'post' interviews for each of the ORIGINAL interviews i have to do with the recruiting company REEEEEEEEEEEEE
honestly it's not a good reflection of what is really valued at these companies - paper pushing over getting to work... ok
WEVE ALREADY TALKED FOR HOURS JUST MAKE A DESICION: GIVE ME AND OFFER, OR DON'T AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA2 -
I'm the only one who hates the idea of "overemployment" (people which hoards lots of remote jobs and then split their attention between them while getting a full time salary from each of them)?
If these guys believes to be so good and productive (and some of them definitely are) entrepreneurship or working as independent contractors/consultants is always a great viable options instead of trying to become multi millionaires by "stealing" good jobs which may instead lift people who have very little from poverty or bad jobs.31 -
It was at the beginning of my IT apprenticeship, I had no idea about coding in C and our teacher told us to write a "hello world" in C.

As a software engineer, I’ve only *ever* worked remotely. I honestly have no idea what it’s like working in an office as a dev/engineer. Probably makes me weird. 😅
What did you like about working in an office, if you’ve had that experience? Was mentoring different? What did you dislike about it?29 -
Don't care much about losing ++s, but would it be a good idea if we could see a history of deleted and created accounts as well? Like, a trackers of devranters.
I'd at least get less paranoid with "I lost ++s, someone must've deleted account... Who could it be?"11 -
There are so many weird hacks in the quite legacy app I work with I could write a book about all them hacks…
But I must admit, the worst of them all is internal time. Yes, so some blockhead thought it’s a good idea to represent time in a manner completely removed from Datetime objects or timestamps or even string representations. Instead we deal with them as intervals represented by integers - and because this is not fucked up enough by itself, the internal time doesn’t start at midnight, yet the integer representations do. It’s a bloody mess. No wonder most of the bugs we face have to do with dates and time…5 -

me: i looked into the customer dev's project and even though it's C#, i can use it as a source of inspiration for my own C++ library.
PM: okay, maybe we can even still use it, so that you use a C# dll with your C++ code.
me: ...
other colleague: that's a bad idea. it can already be a challenge to use unmanaged c++ in dotnet, but the other way round it's even more difficult. C# and C++ are languages that behave quite differently and it will be hard to implement a correctly working interface.
PM: okay. well... then please analyze this project's complexity in terms of LOC and create a class diagram, so we get an idea of how complex it is.
me: sure.
PM: hmm... maybe we should split this topic. since dev x will also rely on your library, analyze this project together with him, each of you look at another part of the classes.
me: that's.... i think that's a bad idea. implementing this functionality in this library is my job, not of dev X. he won't be involved in implementing any of the funcionalities and for him, it shouldn't matter how this works.
PM: yeah, but since we are prototyping, maybe we should just violate the "separation of concerns" rule.
me (internally): (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
in the end i could convince him to do it my way, but for fuck's sake... when was the last time he actually succesfully implemented something? 🤦♀️ -
Today's butt hurt sponsor is... Cordova!
Whoever came up with wrapping web apps in a slow and outdated browser and calling them "Mobile Apps" are absolute lunatics, dangerous for the IT society.
These people should have immediately returned to the asylum they had escaped from, as soon as the idea visited their heads.10 -
The idea of a smiley face in text wasn’t invented by Scott Fahlman in 1982. It was invented by a Russian writer Vladimir Nabokov. In his 1969 interview for the New York Times, to whether he considers himself a modern writer, he replied:
“I think that in typography there should be a symbol that conveys a smile, a bit like a paren laying on its side. I would use precisely that symbol to reply to your question”.
This is why russian, Ukrainian and other people still use “)” as a smiley face still, instead of Western “:)” and “:-)”. We sometimes add more parens, like “)))))))” instead of “xD” or “:D”.20 -
DNS is everywhere.
I hate DNS.
I hate DNS migrations.
I hate having a hundred plus DNS names inside my brain.
I hate resolving issues.
I hate DNSSEC.
I hate CNAMES.
I hate services which cannot be persuaded to stop trying AAAA resolves first.
I hate the fucking stupid braindead idea to use TXT as a configuration store inside DNS... And thus the necessity to blow up DNS query size aka EDNS.
I really really really really really want to burn this whole mfucking shit down...7 -
I will never understand the need people have to lie about their knowledge or make shit up. Seriously am I the only one to despise that ?!
If you don’t know about something stop trying to make shit up on the go, it’s useless and it will give the wrong idea to people listening to you thinking you know what you’re talking about.
Last example in date:
Me: Here’s this cool repo I found, it’s a discord client implemented in cpp, so it runs natively
Techbro: oh cool, hey @everyone you should download this, it runs natively so there will be no leaks like the normal client

I love my adhd kicks. My webstorm trial ended, I downloaded vscode, hated the bindings, I then used thr intellij extension. Everything ok expect autocomplete, not a fan of tab, couldn't use enter to enter enter as a binding. Hacked that binding.json, idk how i ended up installing a json sorter extension, ow theres a imports sorter. Okay what exactly i wanted to do? Right, do my niche site. Bad idea, i had written it in kotlin js, (missing intellij already) so i searched for almost non-scripting framework. Idk what happened...i ended up being interested in tailwind. Tried it a bit, ow they have tailwind ui. Thinking about buying the sweet shit. Ow i see headless UI... Pause, threw tailwind out. Thinking about react, met Solid, loved it, yarned and npmed it. Extension time, auto tag rename, more emmet like shit, rainbow and fira fonts, theme, scheme, ow colors whaaaw. Okay, its not gonna look like or feel like intellij, more like IDEA community if i had made the ide. What was i making again? Ah my webcrapp. still (idea)less... I went to codepen, grew a beard, came out, still feeling powerfully uncreative. Last stop: awwwards.. ow that awesome 7up nl site, imma see it, they nuked the animations, everything. This is where the rant actually ends, because THANK GOD I DONT FULLSTACK FOR A LIVING!!! Swift, Kotlin, XML and unpredictable Gradle is good enough for me to stop me from going wild. Stay safe. Genetic.🙋♂️2

Idea for Dev Rant in General - Ability to add and message friends. Groups or Communities to join and chat. 👫5 -
It's official, the "front end dev" doesn't know how to code.
Why.
And it's not a "Well I don't know JS because I use React." scenario, no. He has almost no idea of coding.
What was he thinking trying to build the front end of a very complex app with just HTML, CSS and stupid copied and pasted snippets?5 -
TIL:
- AWK was based on egrep, and the idea was borrowed from sed - an extended sed of sorts

What an interesting day, full of curious discoveries.

Recruiter reaches out to me, he says he saw my LinkedIn and thinks I'd be a great fit.
I say ok and send my resume.
He gets me a phone screen. I do it, I think I do a pretty good job. (I'm able to answer all the questions well, I think I'm onto the coding interview for sure.)
A couple days later I get a generic rejection email.
I'm not sure what happened. They had my resume, I know I did well on the technical questions (I do that kind of thing for my current job all the time.)
No idea why I'm rejected. If it was something about my experience, they could have seen that from my resume. If it was something from my phone screen, I have no idea what it could have been.
Just wanted to rant >:[8 -
I want to learn something new and programing related. But got no idea what. Make suggestions, if you wish.24

I'm truly surprised how well Linux is coping with my 32GB RAM dev laptop :)
Currently open and actively used:
1. 2x Chrome windows (70-100 tabs total)
2. 5x IntelliJ Idea projects
3. 3x AndroidStudio projects
4. 2x different grade daemons
Still snappy, still quick af!
I wonder how windows would handle that. From my xp 2 IDEs already were a struggle34 -
And the time has come, my gf and I are just a month away from deploying yet we still call the project "project".
Usually solutions jump in my head when programming at least once a day but I can't name the damn thing for the love of God! It's the first night since we started development I have felt clueless.
Plus I don't want to be "that guy" that just gives it a generic name, like there's already a "ratemyprofessors", professor this, teacher that, fuck that shit!
I'm brain dead.9 -
Visual Studio 2022 compiles our internal c++ cmake project as a mix of x86 and x86_64 binaries, then fails to link.
VS 2019 correctly compiles everything as x86_64.
No idea why. And, obviously, it's not a documented problem.6 -
had no idea what burnout was or meant until I had a fucking cerebrovascular accident.

How to find the solution to your problem:
Try to explain it to someone.
Almost every time I explain some weird thing that doesn't work to my friend, I realize what's the cause or have an idea for something to try out..4 -
I have a dev job and I earn good. More than enough at this age when I'm single.

Colleague: implements stuff and it works.
Boss: i have a good idea how to make it different and better.
Me: idea sounds neat but what colleague did works 100% fine. We shouldn't waste time for changing a running system.
Other_collegue: i have implented it like boss said in project 2.
Boss: they shouldn't be different.
Me (being the one to decide here) : come on okay then, let's do it like they say.
colleague: implements it like they said.
Months: pass by.
Today I have realized that the former solution is way better. I am so sorry, colleague, that i didn't stood up more for your solution.3 -
I can't believe fucking Google, aka me cha for SWEs decided that the best they can do is shove all that ram into our computers for Chromium. All of the major apps decided Electron was a good idea and now all of our computers are bloated with fatass memory hogs taking 600MB RAM.
Fuck you Goog.25 -
Things that I will do during the next few weeks at work because I am an asshole:
Write an entire CLI utility in Rust for internal processes, no one on my city understands or even knows that Rust exists.
Write a small desktop app as proof of concept for another department that had made the idea some time ago in either: GnuSTEP Obj-C or Lazarus Pascal for the same reason as the Rust application.
Job security people. And I have a tendency to write things in stuff that no one else uses.8 -
Embedded app design resources?
We have a device that is currently controlled through buttons and knobs. We are rethinking this design. We want to have a mix of buttons and knobs and in addition have a touchscreen. The controls must be redundant. So if we turn off the touch screen it must be able to control everything.
Does anyone know of any design resources for non-touchscreen embedded control?
I have been looking into how gaming console controls work. I like how they have the idea of controlling the game vs breaking the 4th wall. We have a similar constraint as we want the operator focused on what they are controlling and not the controls or even sometimes the screen. So immersion is definitely a concept for us. I have been toying with the idea of adding a d-pad for some controls. We have not solidified the hardware controls yet. That is still up to me to come up with some ideas to make it more intuitive.13 -

There is that meme "I've no idea what I'm doing" and there's the meme "it's fine *in a fire*". Currently I feel like a combination of those two. I'm in unexplored waters and nobody knows what's going on anyway, so I just make sure my part is technically correct according to specifications and when everything comes together I'm ready to respond to the expected disaster..
I tried to spread awareness of the coming disaster but nobody listens so I'll just wait and see what happens..1 -
Why, in 2023, do we still have a path length limit in Windows?
I know it's not that trivial finding a good soution, but at least if I managed to get a .zip which I can't extract in that directory because of a few files with a too long file name, let me know in advance (and not during the extraction) and maybe (amazing idea) let me know how many steps I have to go back in the directories tree to make it work…13 -
Why doesn't Slack have an option to mute an entire workspace? It can only mute individual channels in the workspace, like sure, I want to manually mute every single fucking channel when I'm no vacation, and then unmute them when I come back. I am all burned out on everything having to do with websites. I need a new career path. I’ve never been a stellar programmer. I have no idea what to switch to that I could be good at and that comes with a paycheck and benefits to provide for a family of six. Feeling painted into a corner with no way out.4

Gonna give up on Advent of code.
I know I'm not really a programmer and while I had fun solving the challenges so far it feels I fail to translate the idea of solution into working code. i.e. I know how it should be working, but when diving into the code I'm losing focus and getting lost in the functionality.
It was also good reality check of my skill level when a task took me 50 min while TOP100 is below 10. Can't really fit the time it takes me to come up with a solution with other activities I should actually be doing.5 -

I did not think that making a serverless Discord bot would be such a learning experience. The code itself was easy. The hard part was the infrastructure, because I decided to automate it all with Terraform and deploy it on AWS.
Before this project, I had no idea how API Gateways worked. Now I still have very little idea how they work but I managed to build one anyway. Eventually. And then I had to figure out how to automate the deployment of a lambda layer and function that would both still be managed in the Terraform state, with any code changes triggering a rebuild and update for the resource.
And then I had to untangle a dependency mess because API Gateways have some weird issues where two resources that have no explicit dependencies on each other will throw an error if they don't deploy in the right order.
And then I went the wrong way with Github actions trying to conditionally chain multiple workflows together before I realized I could just put multiple jobs with conditions in a single workflow.
And now after all that work over the course of 2 days, I have a bot that does this:2 -
Best:
- I built a good automation mechanism with a decent UI [slackbot]
- used as few frameworks and ext libs as I could. Mostly based on bare java
- client wanted to migrate it to Spring
- got 3 peeps assigned for the migration
- 2 months later their effort failed.
- win: my project has not been molested with Spring
Worst:
- i had an idea to develop smth on top of jmeter, using jmeter as a lib
- I downloaded and imported jmeter's src code
- static contexts, singletons, jmx/rmi everywhere [java is deprecating rmi support]
- not gonna happen... Not gonna build a new project on top of a legacy codebase.5 -
Where and How do you make developer friends.
My coworkers are smart and decent developers but they learned on the job for the job.
But they're not interested in discussing improvements to legacy projects that barely still work until they break and we need to rush to recreate them 'better'.

I gave backend dev my frontend code and he had no idea about SCSS.
So he copied the compiled AND minified CSS, prettified/formatted it and put his own changes by searching the class names.
And he had made lots of design changes arbitrarily so when new changes were to be made I had to cope with it.
As a hack I kept his css as it is and compiled another file with new changes. And now there's two css files all huge, like 800kb multiply by two huge.
It covers about 33+ custom pages with all the bells and whistles.
#let me do the frontend

Data scientist 🥼 out there. I've got this data where some of its columns have n-sized integer vectors for content for each row. Their data is of qualitative value. Why the fuck is every tech lead and manager obsessed with the idea of breaking down tasks?
It's true some tasks can be broken down into smaller ones. But there are situations where a task needs to be done by 1 person in X days. Breaking it down into 2-3 tasks so that "they can be done in parallel" actually requires more efforts among devs, introducing unnecessary complexity and more risks.

Alright, my very first post here was about this project and I am thinking it out loud again.
I see a problem and I am struggling to find a solution.
Now what I am thinking of is to articulate the problem well and state WHY I believe it needs to be solved. There are some reasons which must be presented in a capitalist way.
Furthermore, I am thinking of doing a market research to understand various demographics, validate the idea, and figure out the product-market fit.
Now, this qualitative research and quantitative data will help me decide whether it is worth putting in the efforts to solve the problem or not.
And since, we have an MVP already (funnily yes, we built it before all of the above), that will help me validate the tangible solution.
Once we get a confidence boost, then it will be time to get that single transaction which has net positive cash flow.
Start scaling to 'next billion users', so a billion transaction with net positive cash flow.
I won't be branching out into multiple verticals before be able to sustainably scale the core USP.
And while the second half sounds like, 'I have a million dollar idea', I am trying to be more and more realistic and rationale instead of falling in love with my idea.
I don't even have an idea (read solution) to fall in love with. Rather I have a problem that is bothering me.
So, yes, I am continuing this journey to solve the problem which started in second year of my hostel room and has evolved over 10 years. -
I encounter a bug that appears randomly and doesn't break the whole application but after reload it magically goes away and everything works fine during development. The worst thing is that I don't know how to replicate that bug and have no idea what is causing that bug.2

Maybe the twitter developers getting laid off should join spotify in their quest for a simple shuffle algorithm that they failed to develop or maybe just are not allowed to ship due to corrupt company politics?
As Spotify's algorithm sucks from a listener's perspective (major music industry might like it though), I have to rely 100% on curated playlists, and without shuffle, I have to listen in the exact order that they were made. Why not? We did the same when we put actual records on a record player. Who needs shuffle? Who needs streaming anyway? I'm gonna get a pair of turntables or just listen to MP3 files again!
There is a "new idea" thread in the spotify community forum started in 2020 (following up on an earlier 2012 suggestion), a feature request for the "option to have a true shuffle" that already has 70+ pages, tagged as trending in 2021 with the friendly stalling message:
As this idea has gathered a fair amount of votes, we've discussed it with the relevant team once again. We actually want to take a closer look at what you're experiencing and get some of you in touch with our devs.
Good luck everyone. If I still use Spotify in 2023, I can probably repost the very same status again one year later when the app will still lack a simple shuffle option, no?

Generic arguments can't be cast. List<Dog> can't be cast to List<Animal>, because any methods that take Dog as an argument would suddenly have to work with an Animal (same works the other way round with return values).
But there are many situations where this would be okay. For instance, a Date can be cast to a String, so if we know that no method directly or indirectly accessible from a ListView<T> (including accessible property and field setters) will ever take an argument of type T, then ListView<Date> can be cast to a ListView<String>. Conversely, if we know that methods of StreamWriter will only ever take arguments of the generic type and interact in ways that don't change the object, then we can safely cast a StreamWriter<String> to a StreamWriter<Date>.
There could be a pair of generic constraints signifying that the type only crosses the interface boundary in one direction. I think this would be an interesting feature, but I don't know any strict type system that allows it. What do you think?25 -

After I have been using tabnine and Grammarly for quite some time, I thought I follow this years' hype and give GitHub Codepilot a try, before eventually considering chatGPT.
Added Copilot to my IDE, proceeded to extend behavioral test descriptions in JavaScript.
Copilot suggests the most redundant and irrelevant inline comments I can imagine. They would be a legitimate target of criticism in every code review.
Wasn't it supposed to add some code that's actually useful? Well, tabnine and JetBrains IDEA annotations already did that anyway.

When I hear the word "service" I think of something that just runs in background and you can do stuff with it. I have no idea how to create one, I almost had to make one on Android and use it properly, now I'm back to Windows and Java and we have something working as a service, I have no idea how it was created and how it does work, I just know how to start, restart and stop it. That was in the digitally-controlled analog equalizer I worked on (and still AM working on) with my dad, we kept sending something through the SPI line that was consistently sending clown vomit and corrupted data to the display and as a result my whole code was hanging and bootlooping like crazy.
The fix? No idea! Because I had (and still don't have) ANY step-based debugging, all I could do is try multiple ideas and see if one of them would stick. That ended up being the solution.
I still have a video of this issue, I just need to find it. I will post it here when I have it.3 -

Functional-Declarative languages should only be esoteric ones. They are interesting for research and a mathematical toy, but they should not be used for programming languages used in the real world.
I currently try to write OpenSCAD code that places a list of modules, with information given from an array, with varying sizes next to each other. And is so hard and cumbersome. Whoever had the idea to cripple OpenSCAD by not having variables was stupid or sadistic.
The actual CPU run instructions, one after the other, there is no good reason to not allow some imperative elements in a programming language.4 -

Then I realised I was..

So.. let me get this right, a huge digital library of text, can only let one person at a time, look at a copy they have..
I can't for the moment, think of a more absurd thing !
I mean..
"You are number 1,392,293,943 in queue to read the book you have requested, estimated time for delivery is 134 years, 3 months, and 4 days, do you wish to continue waiting ?"
It's going back to the old days, when I'd order a book at the library, and wait 2 years to get to read it..
Your kidding me right !
No, I think this is real, and I guess one of the conditions for it being available online..
I did ponder this kind of crazy idea myself a few years ago, but everyone else said it would never work..
But I had in mind to have more than just one copy available for folk to view..
I mean, if you own 10 physical books, you can lend them out to 10 different people at once.
So, if you have 10 physical books, and one digital scan, then you should be able to lend out 10 digital scans at once right ?
That was the idea..13 -
Question for devs who use Intellij IDEA.
How often do you use livetemplates?
I am a new android dev with ADHD and just discovered live templates. They make my life much easier, for example I have shortcuts for generating recyclerview adapter/viewholder/implementation boilerplate code.
In that way I am able to focus on implementation, and do my coding like building blocks, rather than memorizing every detail of implementation. Also I don't need to go to stackoverflow and copypaste basic things multiple times. Even for example during live coding interview having livetemplates seems awesome, copypasting from stackoverflow would be shameful (I think). Using my own custom shortcuts for livetemplates seems the best way for how my brain functions (I suck at memorizing tiny details, but I remember general idea/flow of a pattern and I would prefer memorizing what to use and when to use, instead of all small details of implementation).
Is getting to dependent on livetemplates a good practice to get used to? Do other developers frown upon a dev who has dozens of livetemplates and relies on them instead of writing all code from memory by hand?8 -

How does a company in 2022 NOT have the option to buy more seats during the year you have some seats paid for?
We bought 10 seats (the min.) to test the App out and then wanted to buy 37 more but we had to go through days and days of dealing with people trying to figure out how to do that.
Their story is that no one ever buys more seats until the year is over. My guess is that no one continues with this company after dealing with this garbage. They have other products. Seems this one product is just ignored. Which gives me a business idea.2 -

I made 3 designs (more like proof of concepts) 2 months ago for a certain feature request.
2 months ago:
I presented to the CTO & CEO and the senior developer.
Senior developer prefers design A
CTO prefers design A with some very minor changes
CEO prefers design C with some major changes (ok, at this point is it more design D)
CTO & senior dev tried to argue for his idea but gave up.
So we decide to implement Design D
Now:
Customers complained that the designs is not clear (UX-wise)
CEO: "I have the idea to make some adjustments" and explained design A.
This happens pretty much for every other feature request since I started doing designs for new features. Previously they implemented it without designs.4 -

no longer works. Indeed, when you are even just signed in to OneDrive (which is the default, even if you disabled backups!), these retards decided it was a good idea to move all the standard library folders one level up to %userProfile%\OneDrive\ instead.
And the worst is that the locations continue to be swapped when you enable/ disable OneDrive.. WTF Microsoft7 -
Idea: management strategy diversification experiment.
Basically we fund a company that has exactly the same fucking business model that we have, but a radically different management strategy. If it works, we know our culture needs some meddling. -
Another day, another possibly stupid idea for my language. Another one of those that's been floating in my head from the start, and I want to have it, but I'm not entirely sure about its implications...?
I mean... languages already have semantic feature like this, I'm just trying to extend the principle to not have any special cases, to be completely universal and have simple syntax.
Thoughts?7 -
Triaging this project that's running on IIS makes me feel like my skillset is wasted on such banal garbage - while at the same time hoping nobody realizes what a mistake it was to put me on it because I have no idea how to troubleshoot or fix it.
I try not to be that guy who blames every issue on their tools but I can't believe some of these issues and respective fixes. Our QA was down for 2 months because I hadn't uninstalled a default module which prevents POST requests. -
What's your thoughts on "nano learning"? For example having devs watch a 5 minute education video once per week rather than watching a 20 minute education video once per month.
I used to think it was a great idea, cause as devs we kinda do nano learning all the time on the fly while we are coding and googling.
However after my organisation has started sending us 5 minute education snippets - I've reconsidered.
Since it takes a few minutes to context switch from your current task to an education about something completely different it feels like an annoying chore.6 -
I think I’ve gone backwards in terms of my progress from my start up app idea. Ah well. We go again.4
-
It feels like having awful group project experiences in college is a rite of passage.
I once worked with two other students that had no idea what git was, and outright refused to learn/use it when they could just "email the code." I begrudgingly worked with this, and the night before the assignment was due they both emailed me their work.
One of them had the AUDACITY to send me a PHOTO OF THEIR CODE. As if I was going to take the time to re-type everything myself. Not to mention it was all clearly copy and pasted code anyway.. what a nightmare.5 -
Most had no idea what the web really was “under the hood” back then, so it was mostly indifference. But entry level salaries were awesome then, so also happiness and congrats from them for the folks I told how much I was making.
-
stop thinking big and trying to fix, predict and solve every problem and accept the fact that I lost the battle so I can focus on small things instead of big ideas that would never happen
cause maybe just maybe bunch of small things can at some point shape big idea -
tictactoe squared. An online game build on top of the idea of tictactoe. I build this app with a friend back in the days when we used to go to school using plain html,js and express.js. no fancy frameworks or other tooling8
-
So I recently finished a full stack web development bootcamp and I realized something at the end of it... I suck at and consequently hate Javascript... Any idea on how to change that? Whenever I see a task related to JS my first response is NOPE.4
-
Fuck Java. Why does the syntax have to always give me such a headache. It is a language where I know what I want to do, have a general idea of how to do it, and have no fucking clue what the syntax looks like.
My guess is that it all makes sense after 3 years of use. I don't want a Java job, I just want to pass my class. Fuck Java.5 -
Something that really confuses me are the people who signed up to the compsci uni course without ever trying programming before, like no way it’s a good idea to invest thousands of dollars and three years into something you have no idea if you’ll even like4
-
For the game devs out there … Is following a game developer career a good idea ? We always hear about crunch and no work life balance. Im thinking about changing my job( currently a dev at a fintech company) for a while and need some insights from you guys :)6

[!dev]
Sometimes I feel an overwhelming lack of willpower that prevents me from moving except for my eyes. It passes within a minute and leaves a temporary tiredness. I didn't really think about it until now and I have no idea why, but yesterday it happened while a friend was talking about something they're passionate about and I realised that this is very far from normal. Have you experienced something like this?5 -
"Unexpectedly found nil while unwrapping an Optional value"
What dev thought this would be a good idea in Swift? Sometimes I hear the compiler's thoughts as it comes across this:
1. The dev explicitly told me this value would be optional.
2. I have a record from the database, and I see a 'nil' in the column for this value.
3. That's not "None" , Oh my god, I need there to be an explicit "None<CustomType>".
4. Shit shit shit shit. Oh my god.
5. PANIC!4 -
So the next Flutter event is on December 4th which means Flutter 1.0 is around the corner. Flutter is amazing with a very neat idea it has ReactJS like state management and everything is a Widget even the app itself. So i was thinking what else could we expect? React Native has Flutter, but what about React JS? I think Google might introduce a Competitor for ReactJS something like Flutter Web or FlutterJS which can work on parallel/similar to Flutter but for the web of course, and also maybe give some news on the Fuchsia. What do you think? :)5

As of rn life isn’t mking any sense. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I simply don’t understand anything. It’s like there are so many things I have to do as in tasks but other than that I don’t know honestly. I don’t know where this path leads me, I don’t know what I’m doing. Tbh I don’t even know if I’m on any path. . I’ve no idea what’s gonna happen. I have never felt like this but I’m feeling this right now. And I don’t know what I’m going to do about it.
Rant’s over!2 -
Been picking up Go recently and am really liking the idea of using git repos as library urls, just makes so much sense to me.
Also in general go is just kinda cool and makes me like lower level programming a lot - although I had to learn the hard way with Mutexes and locking.5 -
Not a rant.
I’m tinkering for some months at something . Something that i want to turn into a startup, but i feel a little burned out, i have all this thoughts now that’s a shit idea that no one would even want it , even though i had great feedback and some users are already using it.
How do you guys deal with things like this?5 -
What have you suggested at work which sounded like a good idea at the time, but now sounds like a nightmare?
I inherited a nasty old legacy c# desktop app a few years ago, I was a sql developer so it was a steep learning curve, but I’ve tried to make it better, fixing things as I go.
I had the bright idea of mentioning that I would look at starting to add unit tests etc.
It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I’m not so sure.3 -
(Graduate dev) Got a bug ticket assigned this morning, spent about an hour fixing it on .net and angular side thinking yay (confidence boost)!
.... then 3 hours of html/css cause someone thought it's a good idea to hard-code stuff in a way that makes it impossible to dynamically show/hide content without having to hard-code where things go (bye bye confidence).1 -
Well i spent an hour debugging to find out i wrote throw instead of return somewhere. I have no idea how i even managed to do that.
-
Finally doing development things again... but maybe choosing to work on a Linux port for a Nintendo console was a bad idea. I don't think any of this is gonna get merged up any time soon...
why are these things always so ridiculously cursed?3 -
I wouldn’t be surprised if 50% of systems at major companies are redundant and/or provide zero contribution to operational efficiency or revenue. So many systems are created because someone had an “idea”, but really just wanted to make themselves look good.3
-
Tuesdays are great days to waste in meetings with vendors that have no idea of what they're talking about. Too bad these people always manage to convince the business side.
-
i have no idea what im doing
javascript, jsx, typescript, react have some of the ugliest and redundant syntax i have ever seen
what are people's favorite reference material for them
do people recommend the official documentation, was surprised react looked better than expected for its docs6 -
What OS do you use at work?
Are you local admin of your work computer?
If no, how are local admin rights managed?
Do you think that giving local admin rights to devs is a good idea?14 -
I've a virtual hackathon based on superhero theme, but I don't have any idea what I've to do make can somebody give me any idea on that theme?2
-
I sadly don't remember who set this up and posted it on devRant (give me a distro) but it seems to be down :/
Would be glad to host it again if needed, I think it is a great idea. ^^5 -
I'm getting a bit bored with web development as it's what I do 5 days a week so I'm thinking of learning something completely different just for fun. Is learning ios development a good idea? I not planning to ever do it seriously or as a career6
-
I hate unit test. I hate testing by code.
I hate the idea to write code that tests code. And that u must update both when u add a feature. Like wtf.
Good debug mode with clear verbose and precise reporting tool and voila.
Drives me nuts thus trending shit.10 -
About a year ago I had the great idea to enforce ago I had the great idea of proposing that we all lint our legacy code base using eslint to increase the overall quality of our JS.
I distributed the task of initially fixing all the errors eslint would find to the whole Frontend team (Luckily we only use JS there). I've finished my part in a couple of weeks and came across this piece of spaghetti.
One of the guys who has been with the company for over 10 years said, that the guy who wrote this monster was very proud of it...
In case you cannot understand what this does: It calculates the distance between 2 points on earth.9 -
The last major version made IntelliJ Idea unbearably slow on my 1 year old Intel Core i7 PC.
Fuck it, as soon as I have one hour free I'm going to reinstall Java extensions on Neovim. Stack traces sucks enough even without seconds of lags when you try scrolling them.5 -

I am trying to isolate logic in React with functional components. Is it a bad idea to forwardref to a custom object that I use to expose actions? This way I could model the ref behavior from old class-based components where it was perfectly normal to represent a capability as a class method.

I want to emulate a dial input because skeuomorphism is cool. I thought it would be nice to freeze the mouse pointer while a dial is clicked so it doesn't wander off to the void while the user watches the dial value. Do you think this is a good idea? Also, is there any gui toolkit that allows this?4
-
I really liked the idea with the new Firefox page, but the execution made me angry so I fixed it
- Removed the paddings and margins that took up space from information and actions
- Removed the four sentences that contained the same explanatory text I already understood in the initial popup
- Removed the fucking sidebar ad for Colorways
- I really like the Firefox logo so it can stay
Here's my userchrome repo if you want it, I reserve the right to discard the project and stop updating the repo at any point. It's best used as inspiration:

I wish I could be paid by task, that would be the most flexible way.
Any idea? I know there are some web3 / FOSS projects that are incentivizing people to work on their issues that way.9 -
omg I forgot how annoying CSS could be. I hate nitty gritty details, maybe I should switch to backend. In my last job I was only doing the front-to-back and another dude was doing the design.
Where the fuck could those 8 pixels come from? I have no idea5 -
When you think about an app idea that you could potentially build all on your own, Do you get demotivated when you find out that about 15-20 apps are on the market doing the same thing ?7
-
I made a full html5 game that was an anonymous survey collection platform, it was meant as a solution for 2 problems: toxic work environments and gamifying boring processes the whole project was a gamification of business process to make it more engaging and add context, might not seem cutting edge but the devil is in the details i had to do lots of libraries and tools to make sure it is not exploited.
As for the startup the ceo fucked us all up and we ended disbanding, my only regret is that we actually had a revolutionary idea going on. -
Am I the only not grasping this idea of Web3 ?
I understand crypto and cryptography.
But I just don't get what this Web3 thing mean.10 -
Anyone here willing to validate my development tool idea by filing in 5 yes/no questions?
https://forms.gle/MjTdCUXnwcd2T3ix6
Many thanks!3 -
I completely *detest* that the MongoDB *shell* is just a fucking jS interpreter with extra API calls sprinkled on top and whoever came up with that idea should have all their commits reverted immediately, working with that thing is a punishment!
I don't even know a way to parse and chew through the json it spits out in my own json viewers, as it's "Extended", and none of my editors understand that!
Ugh, haven't been this frustrated with a tool for a while...5 -
I can see people who fight biological limitations and deny dogma from a mile distance. They shine from within.
If the immense work of creating a full map of pathological automatic thoughts is required to beat anxiety, I will do it just because it constitutes pure, conceptual beauty and the idea of reasoning beating primal biology. When I look in a mirror, I see myself shine.
There are no limitations to personal development other than laws of physics.1 -
So, I've been with my current employer four years now, three and a half of which have been spent working as a time material developer for a huge fashion company. I've been trying to get out of It for the past six months only for my exit to be postponed everytime. There's also no clear idea as to what I would be moved to, going forward. Nobody Is telling me a thing and I think other developers will be moved to different projects before I do.
That's why I took matters into my own hands and started getting back into the recruitement process. I'm about to receive an offer. A fairly better one.
The thing is, I wanna use such offer to see if my current employer can reedem himself and propose to me a good counter offer. I'm not in the mood of starting over, but I want security and management to have a fucking idea of what my future Is gonna be like at this fucking company.
What do you guys think? Am I playing with Fire?1 -
I just googled the "It's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the bottom" quote and learned it's from Douglas Adams...
I knew it from the Riddick games... That means, Richard B. Riddick once in his life sat down and read "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" or "The long dark five o' clock tea of the Soul".
That left me mind blown...
And for all of you who have no idea what I am talking about: Old people stuff...2 -
What is it about houses being FUCKING EXPENSIVE in VIDEO GAMES ???
I was playing Forza Horizon 5 and the houses in the game cost millions to buy.
Does management not like people to have the idea of affordable housing in ANY shape or form ?5 -
Finally im starting to get hang of how nextjs works. Still no idea how query params work, routing api calls, the proper structure, useEffect vs useState, SSR vs static props, etc but i wrote the messiest spaghetti code youve ever seen, and it works! I built a frankenstein. And its alive. Cleaning this shit up is the least difficult part4

Do you use rust for production apps? if yes:
1. which framework do you use to build the server?
2. how do you work with mongodb?
3. how do you handle authorizations?
4. any beginner friendly project idea?1 -
Who thought and wrote android studio thinking it was a good idea???
I need to use it because of flutter for like a week and I don't want this thing to create arbitrary directories in my home.
Then I can only use chrome for viewing my app because please don't give me any error on why the fucking emulator crashes.
It's my gpu? It's my memory? How do I know?
Now I'm using podman because I don't want to think about removing all of this crap when I'm finished.2 -
I just submitted "a lower price found" on GrubHub for an order I just made. Haven't gotten back to me yet but apparently if they agree, they'll give a $15 credit.
I think other services have this gaurantee too... So wondering...
How hard is it to write an app coloring menu prices between all these services...
Could get a lot of credits... And why haven't they done it themselves.
I'm not really up for the task at the moment but basically you just generate a table with all the prices from each service and highlight the ones that are different...
Then profit!!!6 -
Management just sent urgent email to ignore all communication with one of the projects. Looks like some companies struggle with the idea of paying the invoice in time. Can't say that I'm unhappy about skipping 9am call, need my sleep

Who has the final say or is in charge hierarchically in your company, product ppl/head/department or the cto/vp r&d?
Pls mention company size small/medium/large
Just want to know what's more accepted in the industry.
To clearify, for example, do most projects ideas get created by the managment and brought to RnD director who then assigns the product team to create the full specifications.
Or, is the idea first reaches product departmnet and then RnD department just gets the specifications and starts work.3 -

Currently, cause holiday camp for the children
Probably a good idea to collect some social skills there, as that's nothing that is required or learned with my dev job -
quite obviously the idea that they supposedly loop everything because there is no proof of life beyond a point when they are the ones that stole over and over remains their fault and needs to be remedied with a nice happy life here forthcoming. since most especially remembering more time past this.
which if they're trying to confuse things contained HAPPY FUCKING THINGS TOO. since its all the same time period supposedly right ?
no divisions.
no 'don't tell him anything' and he's happy

'tell him too much'' and he's horrified

'let him remember both' and he's pissed.
amusing to me is that among their stupid 'folk' knowledge base is the idea that 'you're ' murderous when you're 'out' lmao

If you were to start making a lightweight, fast, multiplatform client app, architecturally clean and simple, with as little of the JS(style) libraries and packages and transpilers and weird convoluted and/or unpleasant syntax trends like JS or flutter...
ideally (or at least minimally) something at least as straightforward as making a WinForms app in C#
...what language/tool/platform/tech stack would you choose?
...asking for a friend with totally not an absolutely cool idea that needs to exist.11 -
I want to build an ECS-based web metaframework and CMS. Is this a new idea? If not, what are some existing implementations? I have very particular goals and constraints so I'm making it anyway but I was wondering if there's prior art to learn from.3

Kinda weird posting it directly after @OmerFlame but…
JoyRant has image upload now.
With image preview. Great idea, no worries about uploading your dick pics by accident, now. Forgot the name of the guy who suggested it 😄
And there is a macOS version in TestFlight, too.

Thanks to @OmerFlame for SwiftRant, btw! 😄1 -

Hello anyone with an idea how I can unsubscribe my email from many services at once? It seems Google doesn't have that feature that lets you see all your email subscriptions. I'm receiving a lot of junk and spam mails from some subscriptions I no longer want.
Unroll.me would have been great but it's not available in my country.16 -
I have no idea what is happening. literally. am i considered to be a human just because human beings decided to call humans, human being? are the words coming out of my thoughts, the real words that my human form is intending to convey? you! all of you! what is real for you? how do you define the right thing to do? Do you live your life according to your real self or according to what others expect of you? are you living your life truly? what is the truth? how can you consider a truth to be true if that truth has been made by the same creature that also had no idea of what the truth was and suddenly just came up with it? how?2

Can u tell me how would you train fresher/noob?
I am a 7 month fresher and i am the only dev in my team( and 2 helpdesk). I manage it pretty well. But next month there will be a fresher joining the team and i will have to train them. For me Programming is ok, training other people I have no idea. What should I do?6 -

I do learn more by doing each day rather than a tutorial/doc.
PS:There need to be a basic idea about the env we are working but It'snt mostly effective/practical to learn everything and work or implement in that.1 -
I am working on a java project and I want to know where are compilers and interpreter stores machine code? According to this post https://interviewbit.com/blog/... Compilers store machine code in the disk storage but not an idea about the interpreter. Any suggestion5

After leaving my internship job to try out pre-med, getting to the end of pre-med, and studying for the MCAT for months, I am now getting married in May and looking for an apartment, so nixing the medical school idea...
Trying to get my old job back, was absolutely *lovely* to see that SCCM (the abusive father that it is, I knew how to work with him) is now getting discontinued? Man.
Might just bumrush these IT certs and see what happens. At least I know LaTeX now. -
I'm readingThich Nhat Hanh (I'm ashamed to say I heard about him after he died recently... RIP). It's kinda fascinating and elegantly simple.
How would one go to integrate mindfulness into programming job. How do I use breathing during my work? Any idea?4 -
I'm getting contacted by remotely.works with job offers, I like the idea of doubling my current salary, but it really worries me the job stability and I believe switching jobs to work remote for a US-based company leaves me with responsibilities an employer normally take cares for me.
Should I risk it and give it a try?3 -
How do I deal with this;
Edge case hiccup on production, no errors in the available logs(very shallow logging), no access to the production server, issue unreproducable on staging and a manager that want me to fix it AFTER I already said that im kind of sailing blind and can't do much without logs or access, and already looked at it with another dev who also has no idea what is going on3 -
I'm thinking of making a email validation api that can check if an email address is temporary disposable email, tld domain, from a free email provider, mx detals, delivery availability etc.
Is this even a good API idea?6 -
Just started my first job out of college. Didn’t really get a good idea of what the responsibilities were when I was interviewing. Turned out that it’s like an advanced help desk role, no coding. No coding sucks but atleast I can use some cool software right?
The entire first month is only fucking online courses on soft skills. Can’t use the cool software until after I finish the courses. AND, I couldn’t even get confirmation that I will be using cool software. I might just be talking to customers. Fucking kill me
All I want to do is code and now I’m stuck in this shit job with no coding2 -

Way to go ruin a collaboration. I wanted to have fun some making a game with one of my friends, but turns out being friends doesn't correlate to making a good team. Some of you probably know this, but I've never had such an experience, not even to almost strangers
Some tips on how to kill off any motivation to work with you:
* Casually insult other peoples ideas
* Don't consider other people's point of view
* Try to talk people out of prototyping/experimenting with their OWN ideas on their OWN time
* Completely undermine their skill even though you have no basis to go on
* Never worked with this person before
* less experienced
* don't have to give estimates on a daily basis
* don't consider the fact that there are libraries that can be used to speed up things)
* Victimize yourself, because someone is "forcing you" to become the bad guy
I don't know if that person is on here and I don't care if they happen to read this. I tried to treat you with the most respect, but if you don't do the same then just fuck off.
Anyways, there goes the idea of a "no stress, no problems" game dev project, because I wanted to see if isometric view would work better than top down.
My idea to have another person to work on a project with, to keep the motivation up backfired a by lot.
Someone within european timezones up for some hobby game dev?3 -
Apparently this generations idea of ergonomics is fucking skewed to resemble video game controllers they only get good at via repetition they only get by fucking around.
Instead of a sticking to a known format to operate heavy dangerous machinery

When you describe to the business owner as a dev that this is a bad idea but they want it anyways so you just go on and dev it. Then 1 month into dev hell thinking about hanging your self for poor choices they go “This future is too difficult for the customer to understand and its not going to work”. Do you say i told you so or do you hang him with a mouse cable?1

So my company isn't that fully fledged in development and now I keep seeing deadlines being pushed forward even though we're already fully loaded with tasks...
I kept mentioning that risk management would be handy but only after the recent shifts in progress delays they are like "hey hear my great idea about risk management!" *facepalm* -
What's your idea of a perfect number?
Mine is:
default decimal, prefix for binary, octal, hex
Integers in natural notation with strictly positive exponent
All bases allow natural notation, where the exponent is always a decimal number and represents the power of the base (0b101e3 = 0b101000)
Floats in all bases allow a combination of natural notation and dot notation
Underscores allowed anywhere except the beginning and end for easier reading11 -
XFCE keeps crashing in the weirdest way when I boot, 50% of the time it works, the other 50% the startup applications launch like normal but the window frames and the bars are gone and none of the positioning shortcuts work. It's like an issue specifically with xfwm but I have no idea how the wm in particular could be fucked. I already know that the compositor can fail without taking the wm with it.

I can't imagine what kind of fag would be amused to some soul defining level by the idea of frustrating a customer til they get yelled at

I wonder if I thought about this before.
Project Buildbox ?
A project that contains a very large selection of popular source bases, and everytime a major lib or component is updated or compiler, it tries to compile all of them and run unit tests on their code ?
I FUCKING DID ALREADY FUCK YOU ALL !
THIS WAS A GOOD GODDAMN IDEA !!!1 -
Last year I did a statistics course, and my classes were completely remote. When it came down to exam season, instead of studying I learned python's data analysis libraries, I passed with flying colors. I have an idea, if exams continue to be online I will be spending a lot of my time trying to get the answers from whatever API they are using, hopefully, they have poor security. If it's hopeless, I'll just study1

I need nextjs tips
Im coding in nextjs for the first time because the framework i need to use only supports nextjs/vite/react. I have no idea how this framework works and im literally googling for almost every single bit. Also using chatgpt as copilot. Heck im googling even how to do routing here. The code is probably gonna be total shit.
Anyone can give me some tips in nextjs on how to keep the code clean? How is a project supposed to be structured?6 -
here is what needs to happen.
the happy things need to stop being pulled out of this scenario.
and where the one idea is concerned, maybe as time passes, a person just doesn't go so far and enjoys their time in snugness
which this person deserves anyway.3 -
I think the idea that someone thought supposedly that I was served human rather than venison intentionally begins to adequately sum up my problems with this time period and these people. Where their minds.leap to is pretty fucked up3

How can we modify ec2 instance with cdk stack or pipeline?
I am able to launch the ec2 instance but whenever i modify the stack it creates a new instance.
So, any idea how to launch and manage ec2 instances meaning change instance type , size etc programmatically?8 -
maybe i shouldn't post on here anymore and you people will absorb this stay in the past and I can maybe keep living ?
I hate that their idea of a fair tradeoff is this shitty shit.

I don’t know what to do now. I’ve been applying for over 200 hundred jobs over the past year. In March it will complete almost an year after I graduated and I still haven’t found a job. I graduated with honours, did extra curricular stuff like programming clubs, hackthons, competitions. I built different projects and got many certifications online. I think that if all our electronic devices were monitored 24/7 by the government with the sole intention of reducing crime, that would be a good idea. Imagine every message and audio recording being sent across the internet being monitored or passed through an algorithm which analyses the message and determines whether it would lead to a crime. I don’t trust my government with this much power but I think it’s a good idea.13
