Search - "idea"
This happened at my previous job where I worked for a dating app. It was at a time where the CEO was trying to turn the dating app into “more than a dating app” by adding tons of social features. We always had “interests” which allowed users to see what interests they had in common with another person, but he wanted to take the social component even further.
So with that, he decided we needed an “activity feed.” The activity feed would show what various Facebook connected users were liking on Facebook, posting on Facebook, etc. On a dating app. Where the majority of the audience was > 50 years old. The idea was absolutely ridiculous and everyone but the CEO knew it was destined for failure before we started building it.
But that’s not the best part. The best part was when we launched the activity feed component. We launched it late on day and went home shortly after. The next morning, we came in, and checked on the activity feed to see what was doing. It was literally all spammers liking porn/sex related stuff on Facebook. It was a complete disaster. All garbage but not just boring garbage - completely obscene garbage.
And just like that, the activity feature came and went in the course of a few days.18
We should make a website called something like:
It's just a web crawler that shows you everything you have ever posted on all your accounts and hopefully shows embarrassing posts first.46
It had been 13 days since I was last approached with a "great idea for an app".
Today, the counter resets to zero!7
Just an idea.
If I remember correctly, Symbian OS was a free, open-source OS, right?
How about people start working with it again? It could make a great Android alternative if enough were willing to work with it.16
I had this idea about national flags on the avatar. (Something like an item on the desk) then @letmecode suggested notebook stickers.
What you devRanters think?19
Movie idea: a plane in mid air catches the wannacrypt virus and refuses manual control. The plane flies straight forward but they only have 2h until they're out of fuel and crash. The only way to pay the ransom is to get enough bitcoins but a recent price-fluctuation made the amount of bitcoins to pay way too high. The only way to resolve this is to create a tumoil on social media causing the bitcoin price to go down.
Visit your local cinema this summer to see 200 passengers and a group of devrant-guest-starrings use nothing but their brains, geniuety and arsenal of devices. Will they find the guy that blocks the wifi by watching 4k porn? Will alice and alexdelarge have to resort to building a fuel-powered mining-rig? Or will linux and linuxxx compile an open-source cockpit program before they run out of time? If so, will they even be able to decide on a linux distro to install on the cockpit?

Douche: So your a programmer ?
Douche: Excellent, I have an idea.....
Douche: cmon bro, week be rich, this screensaver so will make us tons of money
Me: I have a question.
Douche: corz man waddup
Me: do you use a screensaver?
Douche: no, why?
Me: *walks away angrily10
Non-dev friend : hey I've got a cool idea, we'll create a site where people can post jobs and people can bid for it. We'll name it freelance.com. We gon be rich!!!!..
Friend: so you in?
Friend: It's really easy, just build it like you built that website you did the other day (talking a landing page he saw me do in a week). In 2 weeks, we'll be millionaires. You'll do all the programming stuff, so you get 30% of the money, I'm the idea guy so I get the other 70%. About that, you in now?
Me: have you heard of odesk, freelancer, jobberman.
Friend: no... Does a freelance site exist.
Me: boy, it's 2016.
Friend: I just thought of it few minutes ago and my other friends thought it was a great idea.
When anyone tells you some app idea you have already heard a thousand times, do you throw a OutOfFucksToGiveException?6
Friend: You are a programmer, right?
Friend: I have a idea how we can become rich
Me: *not again*
Me: Ok tell me
Friend: Look, it is almost like Facebook, but...7

Example #1 of ??? Explaining why I dislike my coworkers.
VP: VP of Engineering; my boss’s boss. Founded the company, picked the CEO, etc.
LD: Lead dev; literally wrote the first line of code at the company, and has been here ever since.
CISO: Chief Information Security Officer — my boss when I’m doing security work.
Three weeks ago (private zoom call):
> VP to me: I want you to know that anything you say, while wearing your security hat, goes. You can even override me. If you need to hold a release for whatever reason, you have that power. If I happen to disagree with a security issue you bring up, that’s okay. You are in charge of release security. I won’t be mad or hold it against you. I just want you to do your job well.
Last week (engineering-wide meeting):
> CISO: From now on we should only use external IDs in urls to prevent a malicious actor from scraping data or automating attacks.
> LD: That’s great, and we should only use normal IDs in logging so they differ. Sounds more secure, right?
> CISO: Absolutely. That way they’re orthogonal.
> VP: Good idea, I think we should do this going forward.
Last weekend (in the security channel):
> LD: We should ONLY use external IDs in urls, and ONLY normal IDs in logging — in other words, orthogonal.
> VP: I agree. It’s better in every way.
Today (in the same security channel):
> Me: I found an instance of using a plain ID in a url that cancels a payment. A malicious user with or who gained access to <user_role> could very easily abuse this to cause substantial damage. Please change this instance and others to using external IDs.
> LD: Whoa, that goes way beyond <user_role>
> VP: You can’t make that decision, that’s engineering-wide!
Not only is this sane security practice, you literally. just. agreed. with this on three separate occasions in the past week, and your own head of security also posed this before I brought it up! And need I remind you that it is still standard security practice!?
But nooo, I’m overstepping my boundaries by doing my job.
Fucking hell I hate dealing with these people.14
Seeing how people dislike idea pitches like "It's like Uber but for ...".
I can't help but imagine how the idea of devRant might have been pitched -
"It's like Twitter but for frustrated developers" 😋7
IntelliJ IDEA just saved my ass!
I tried deleting a resource file I had staged, but not commited yet.
A dialog comes up asking to delete alternative configs with "Yes" as the default.
Boom! After I braindead hit the enter key all other files vanished too!
I checked Git and saw to my horror that the files were also not tracked anymore.
I hastly lookup the last backup timestamp - an hour ago - fuuuuu!
I just lost about an hour of work.
I was about to give up and start from scratch when I look at the edit menu in my IDE.
Turns out you can actually undo multiple file deletions!
Kudos to the girls and boys at JetBrains! You saved the day! 😙8

An app that lets you turn on the camera on someone's laptop to see if they're around. I'm not even kidding. She said it would be a social media thing... creeper.3
1) get an idea for a cool app
2) evaluate feasibility and execution
3) ensure accessible data streams and APIs
4) get excited and realize the idea is doable
5) see someone has done that exact thing and it's already published on the Appstore :/11
I frckin HATE people who say 'Ah, you can program now? So can you make a game for me? I even have some ideas!, bla bla blurb...'
It makes me wanna hurt them. And the really, really sad thing about it is: nearly no one understands why.4
We all have that one "friend" that has an idea for the "next great" Facebook or Snapchat, but different...
FUCK OFF AND SHOVE THAT IDEA WHERE THE SUN DOESN'T SHINE!5
Hi everyone, I'm new here but I liked the posts so I thought I'd chip in. Here's a picture of my home office.
I'm currently brushing up on SQL and Java in my internship while I await graduation at the end of the year. Java>C# IMO. C++ is my first love but nobody wants to hire for it anymore.
To everyone who's worked in Java, Eclipse or Intellij IDEA and why? (I mostly use Eclipse because the internship requires it).
I hope to have fun here, so please give me a warm welcome or a rant.23
Idea Guy repellent:
Next time they tell you that they have a billion dollar idea and want you to build it, don't get angry.
Just point them to a code learning website and tell them if their idea is truly worth a billion dollar then they should spend the time learning the tech.
Then laugh as other idea guys come to them with ideas about their billion dollar apps while the rest of us are finally left alone.9

Someone should make a messaging app called the "insecure messenger"
It's main purpose would be, to be that opposite of something like signal or riot.im
The app would let you message your friends. But it would transmit messages over plaintext using http.
Then there would be a second screen that shows a basic Wireshark (or tshark) output so that you can see your plaintext messages being sent and received.
But of course.. someone would download the app without understanding what they are doing and get their shit hacked..23
What about creating a virtual-devduck?
A duck on the bottom of the screen that sometimes does weird stuff and says something so you can talk to her and try to debug
I want to do this but I don't think it's possible with Java :(28
Dev of my team coding on Idea
Seeing him using space-bar to format copy pasted lines of code
Me: why don't you use ctrl+l shortcut?
Him: I don't use shortcuts while coding
Me: at least use the tab
He formatted 3000 lines of code with space-bar. He's not even using notepad. 😐

Who was the fucking genius that hatched the idea that all these CI workflows should be controlled by all those stupid files such as yml and whatever other format each and every fuckstick came up with?
Like, are we really supposed to remember all that fucking gibberish you type in a file to automagically do your shit?
Fuck all that shit including but not limited to:
50 years of developing all this crap and we can't come up with something that's easy to use? why the fuck did all this crap have to turn into such a convoluted pile of shit32
This days whenever I have a groundbreaking idea, my firs step is...
Google that exact title, because every possible app ideas are already done ✅1
A normal social media app. But everytime a user taps on opposite gender's profile pic, it secretly records his face during that activity and then tweets that recording.

Full time eclipse user, I just bought intellij idea and it blows my mind :D
Merry Christmas everyone4
Are there any website or public list that shame companies and websites for sending passwords in plaintext whenever we tend to reset the password?6
You wake up in the middle of the night with an awesome idea for a new app.
You spend weeks thinking about it, open a private repo, start to design the UI and logo, and in all your excitement explain your idea to the family and best friends, but no one really finds it cool.
Slowly you start to lose the excitement, day after day you consider it more and more stupid, until you start to hate both the idea and yourself because you really liked it.
6 months later, when you totally forgot about it, you find an app on the App Store very similar to it (but with less features)... as App of the Day, sold for €6.99, 4.8 rating, thousands of positive comments and loved by everyone.
The moral of this story?
If you really like your idea, just make it happen without looking at anyone.6
Want to make some friends quickly?
Just go to any pseudo startup incubator in a university (all business people with an idea), mention you are a coder (mimicking the typing on a keyboard to make sure they understand) and all of the sudden you'll have a crowd of people around you that "need to talk to you"
The other guys working with me have to physically protect me every time someone finds out1
Friend: 'I have an idea you could totally do: a search engine for travellers that searches hostels, hotels, flights and resteraunts'
Me: 'yeahh I'm currently working on an e-commerse website. Should keep me.busy for a while'
Friend: 'integrate it into your website, it'd be silly not to'
Do people think we just click 'integrate idea' button for a living??!
Seriously the fux3
What if there was a service where you press a button and it tells you a random Linux distro to install along with giving a list of good things about the distro and some download links?6
Brought in a meeting a really good idea. One guy out of 9 sayd, that it's stupid and we could not use it.
1 week later the same guy proposes the same idea to the boss and team. Took all the merit and when I confronted him, he denied, that it was first my idea.
Fuck my life...2
When you have a "GREAT" idea, start to work on it and after 2 hours you have forgot why you have started the project.
Me right now 😖
Sorry for my bad english 😓3
Why The Fuck do you always have to say "Yes"?
I'm asking for a goddamn opinion. Give me an opinion.
But no, everything I say must be fucking gold 'cause it's always "yes", "you're right", "good idea", "I agree".
It's irritating as hell. It's "yes" even when I say something stupid on purpose.
Learn to say no, for fuck's sake.12
Adventures Of The New COO
So when that new COO joined our company ( read my previous rant to know that story ) he brought a graphic designer with him
as a designer he's ok, more of a old school package designer type, but as a person one of the most annoying one I've ever met, always want to be included with our conversations, talk about rain and stuff
so few days ago, i was working on a website, headphones plugged in, music playing, he comes near my seat
Designer: Are you busy ?
Me: yeah, I've this website to finish
Designer: So i have this idea for an app
Me: *taking off headphones while thinking doesn't this dumbass know the meaning of busy*
Designer: what if we create an app for super markets, like this isle has this stuff, that isle has soap or something and how it'll be easy to find what you want to buy and keeps going on and on for about 5 minutes
Me: *making my voice as polite and sarcastic as possible*
It wouldn't work, every market has a different layout even among same market chain it's different
Me: have you ever been to a super market, they have a board saying what the isle is above the isle, all you have to do is just look up
Designer: hmm yeah i guess
everyone wants to make apps and make money, but doesn't have the fucking brain capacity to think about the idea for a bit and do some research, instead they come and waste our time2
Best swag ever: 3d printed dev rant avatar? I would love to have my mini-self on my desk! Or for playing board games! For rubberducking! In the fishtank! Oh man, inifinite posibilities ... *_* what would you guys do with one????14
Why do people overlook hosting? They have an awesome website built but then go for the crappiest web hosting!8
Ever heard of event-based programming? Nope? Well, here we are.
This is a software design pattern that revolves around controlling and defining state and behaviour. It has a temporal component (the code can rewind to a previous point in time), and is perfectly suited for writing state machines.
I think I could use some peer-review on this idea.
Here's the original spec for a full language: https://gist.github.com/voodooattac...
(which I found to be completely unnecessary, since I just implemented this pattern in plain TypeScript with no extra dependencies. See attached image for how TS code looks like).
The fact that it transcends language barriers if implemented as a library instead of a full language means less complexity in the face of adaptation.
Moving on, I was reviewing the idea again today when I discovered an amazing fact: because this is based on gene expression, and since DNA is recombinant, any state machine code built using this pattern is also recombinant. Meaning you can mix and match condition bodies (as you would mix complete genes) in any program and it would exhibit the functionality you picked or added.
You can literally add behaviour from a program (for example, an NPC) to another by copying and pasting new code from a file to another. Assuming there aren't any conflicts in variable names between the two, and that the variables (for example `state.health` and `state.mood`) mean the same thing to both programs.
If you combine two unrelated programs (a server and a desktop application, for example) then assuming there are no variables clashing, your new program will work as a desktop application and as a server at the same time.
I plan to publish the TypeScript reference implementation/library to npm and GitHub once it has all basic functionality, along with an article describing this and how it all works.
I wish I had a good academic background now, because I think this is worthy of a spec/research paper. Unfortunately, I don't have any connections in academia. (If you're interested in writing a paper about this, please let me know)
Edit: here's the current preliminary code: https://gist.github.com/voodooattac...
Terminal is writing outputs on my screen.
Spotify is running.
And then, an electric impulse goes from a neurone to another, travelling through my synapses: an idea!
“What if I had a favourite terminal commands manager? That’d be so cool! I could have an automatic mode that listens to my terminal input/ retrieves list from “history” command and sets up a ranking of most used ones to reuse with a shortcut, and even better, you can create the list!
I’m gonna definitely do this!”
5 Minutes of Google later :
apt install iDontRemember
I have this amazing idea, said John
I ask John about this amazing idea.
John goes on to say that it will change the world and solve world hunger.
I ask him again, what's your idea?
John says my idea is to 'solve world hunger'! AMAZING RIGHT?
now now John, so you're gonna do it like (provide a few solutions)..
John says yeah that was exactly what my idea was (ah. Fuck you)
So John now is under the delusion that he can solve world hunger and the steps to do it came from his own ostrich-brained imagination...
Tiny fuck doesn't even realize the fact that he plagiarized.
Now we look into the future where I ask John honestly that he should come up with his own idea to solve world hunger and not use mine.
JOHN GETS ANGRY
John asks 'do you actually think that was your idea? We were brainstorming man, I told you we had to solve world hunger and only because of my voice did I spark that idea in you, I created that idea man'
So, well since he's plagiarized so much I told him that I had this plan to perform a hunger strike in the grand Canyon to get some attention..
Fidgety little bitch found another idea to steal and he was like good idea!! I'm booking my flight to the Grand Canyon now!
What bout me I ask? He says man take some rest let me face the pressure (and the glory apparently)
Well, John did not return.
Poor stupid John did not realize that I had been joking and got his little ass fired under the direct sun in the grand canyon
Moral of the story :
I WILL DESTROY YOUR HOMES AND YOUR LIVES PLAGIARISTS, I WILL EXTERMINATE YOU *cough**cough*
Damn that Sulphur hexafluoride actually worked!9
DevRant should have a sister app called DevChant where you post, collaborate, and get feedback on ideas, projects and concepts in a positive manner. 🙃6
working on this personal project for a year with some progress every week..
I got this new Idea for this new project!4
TL;DR : do we need a read-only git proxy
Guys, I just thought about something and this potential gitpocalypse.
There is no doubt anymore that regardless of Microsoft's decisions about Github, some projects will or already have migrated to the competition.
I'm thinking : some projects use the git link to fetch the code. If a dependency gets migrated, it won't be updated anymore, or worse, if the previous repo gets deleted, it can break the project.
Hence my idea : create some repository facade to any public git repository (regardless of their actual location).
Instead of using github.com/any/thing.git, we could use opensourcegit.com/any/thing.git. (fake url for the sake of the example).
It would redirect to the right repository (for public read only), and the owner could change the location of the actual repository in case of a migration.
What do you think ? If I get enough ++'s, I'll create a git repo about this.6
“Your idea is not valuable, at all. All value is in the execution. You think you are an exception; you are not. You should not insist on an NDA to talk about it; nobody serious will engage in contract review over an idea, and this will mark you as clueless.” Patrick McKenzie6
It would be great if there's a feature that you'll see the rants of other devs around your area. Must be exciting, ain't it?16
Long long ago, I had a dream to start a startup.
Till today I'm not able to find an idea.
Then, I realized ideas cannot be forced. They come when they come.7
When my headphones are on :
1 - I can't hear you
2 - I don't care
3 - It's your problem not mine
4 - I don't care
@dfox @trogus How about a !rant option to automatically inform users that the rant isn't really a rant?7
I heard about this in a Hackathon.
The guy wanted to create a unique and universal username for every human.
I don't think it's feasible.
FUCKING FINALLY TIME!!!
I did it! I made IntelliJ IDEA find my Android SDK installation!
Now I can experience the joy of Gradle build times!!!
Why did Google had to make so difficult to work with Android without its Studio?!?!?!12
That moment when you have an idea for a project and you spend all your time on setting up the environment, then your realize it is a stupid idea.
Yesterday I was hanging with the guys from our Records dpt in the staff lounge. Their manager is a pretty nice talkative guy. Everything was going well until this happened..
Him: Hey you, I have an idea for an app. You can"definitely" help me, right? Or someone you know who also does the code thing..
Me: It depends. Just before you tell me about this idea, know that you'll be paying me or whoever will be doing this job unt..i..l *he interrupts
Him: Paying? I thought it was a one time or few hundreds of dollars. Why do I have to keep paying when you haven't finished the app?
Me: Did you finish your entire work this week?...but you're still getting paid next week, right?
Him: Oh crap, makes sense. Ok, how about I pay you the amount you charge then, that's it?
Me: See, you don't get it. I know once the app is done, you'll come back to me to fix and update things. When that time comes, you'll have to pay me again. And with the initial payment, don't just think you pay me and that's all... you'll...
Him: Crap, I have think more and come up with a plan for this.. nevermind, I'll keep you updated.
I think I made him sad knowing that, this sort of things doesn't happen easily.2
When you've written out a grand and glorious rant or maybe an idea for a new feature, you're about to hit Post, then suddenly you realise - "Nah, that's shit" and close the modal.
I am hoping to get two dev ducks soon.. I am naming the first "sir duck the first" and I will probably name the second one "Steve" ..
I will then make a series of posts called "DEVDUCK ADVENTURES" . Is will be a photo of the duck or ducks and a little story or something about that day's adventure. (I will try to keep it interesting)
I am only writing this down / posting so that I don't forget when I actually get the ducks.
Don't steal my idea.6
Unnamed hacking game - "terminal" graphics
-Multiplayer. Last man standing.
-Like a tower-defence game but technical
You work for a company that has outsourced their technical department to Bykazistan, a country with good internet and bad laws. On one hand, labor is very cheap! There are no pesky laws protecting workers, so you don't need to pay them what they're worth. Phew. However, there are also no laws against cyber crime. But for a start-up like you, the risk is worth the reward!
...which would be great! If you were the only company with that idea. As it turns out, you aren't. All of your competitors also recently outsourced to Bykazistan, and that could be an issue.
You would be afraid, but you are a hardened businessman. You are familiar with the cut-throat nature of the business world and where others see risk, you see opportunity. Let the games begin.
Your mission is to protect your ciritical assets at all costs, eliminate your opponents, and make ciritical financial decisions - all while maintaining your uptime!
Build a botnet and attack your competition to decrease their uptime and disable their attacks. Port scan your opponents to learn more about their network, but beware of honeypots! Initiate devastating social engineering attacks - and train your employees against them! Brute-force their credentials, and strengthen your own.
Make sure to keep your software patched...6
What do you think about replacing "user123 +1'd your rant" with "user123 incremented your rant".
Seems to me that it would fit well with the whole programming atmosphere.7
How often do you experience someone pitching an idea they want developed, which is so poorly thought through that when you ask them to elaborate, they turn sour and you never hear from them again?5
If you are one of all those awesome developers and hackers and I only understand 20% of your rants then props to you and keep scrolling :-D
But if you are a young developer, fresh grad or just learning programming I have an idea, how about a mentor?
This literally just pop in my head right now while cleaning my kitchen!
I'd be learning along your side and also having lots of fun! I don't have any formal experience providing mentoring but have some education credits and patience.
I'm gonna stop the sales pitch because it's annoying even me! but Idk, i just thought that maybe there's someone else out there interested in mentoring services :P3
@dfox I would love to have a "save for later"/ bookmark feature. I am seeing so many great things here and I'd love to access them later. Maybe something you could implement some day?
I got a dayjob in a company. I got an error. I cannot solve it and I am so desperate. So I go to stackoverflow, nobody answers. I post on git issue, but nobody solves the problem. So, I pay someone to solve it, like Hackhands.com to find a mentor. There is no mentor that can help. So I pay more, hired a peer, and finally a development team just to help me. They get paid only if they solved it.
But each of my folks repeat my same steps, asking on stackoverflows or github, and none of these help. So, they end up hiring their own friends and mentors. Their friends also end up paying (pay before problem solved) someone to help them.
their friends pay for friends of friends, then friends of friends of friends
And all of a sudden it becomes a giant MLM scheme.
And those people they paid for actually work for a company behind the scene which I am a founder of 😁
Multi billions startup idea, is it?4
Most favorite: Intellij IDEA
Least favorite: Intellij IDEA
I mean, once Maven and stuff are set it's perfect. But, damn, configuring it on a new computer...3
I'm four months in my new job and I've done 5 days worth of coding. There aren't much projects coming to our office nowadays so I'm being paid just to log my hours.
Any of the ranters here have any small project ideas I can make to pass the time?
I've literally run out of things to make.18
I have an idea to make server side html. Just for fun. Or for noobs who just wants to know web development.
... something amazing
(This could also be the much needed revolution for backend)14
Idea for Weekly Rant - What have you developed that you're most proud of?😁
Idea for Dev Rant in General - Ability to add and message friends. Groups or Communities to join and chat. 👫3
The moment when you have this greatest idea in mind for an application after all that brainstorming!!!
Later you find out the idea already exists...3
Anyone else think favoriting a rant should give the author some extra ++ or a counter in their profile?2
You know your idea was shit when....
You see it on devrant as the subject of someone's all caps, swear word filled rant...1
Spent last 2 days thinking of a good App Idea for a Hackathon. About 15 ideas later
Error 404: Shit to do not found!2
@dfox Just an idea and don't know if anyone would be interested but what if there was another menu option underneath rants for "Showcase" or something where people share their creations and projects?1
Oh boy IntelliJ IDEA is gonna spoil me bad
This postfix completion feature just blew my mind. I didn't know I wanted this until I found out about it.
I missed a proper IDE for a long time. VSCode is fine but holy shit I forgot how much a good IDE can do for you.5
An AI that you're feeding with git history amd speak during the stand up meeting so you don't have to.3
Sleepless night are often the start of great idea's, if only i could remember them the next day after finally falling asleep
I was bored at my workplace and thought to put curl code to GET a random dad joke on opening terminal everytime
Fuck, now I'm having a migraine
but i have an idea to expand this project even more4
I hate it when people ask me questions that are easily googleable. I'm sorry but, please, don't waste both of our time on asking things like how to make a screenshot on an iPhone...
1. I have an android
2. Hey, you know this magical thing called Google?
3. You do know it? Oh my, good for you! Now try using it, thnx.
Unfortunately, I can never say this out loud. I just silently Google for them and send them a link. Perhaps, I need to grow some balls :D
Okay, never mind, said it once in a more polite form, and the dude replied with "fuck you, you female developers are such arrogant bitches", then he unmatched me. Good story, fun times.5
And idk if I'm crying from it being so funny or so sad...
Forwarded to me by my boss, found somewhere on the internet, creds to who made it2
Idk if anyone’s said this before, but it’d be a nice feature if we could swipe from the left or right of the screen to go to the last or next rant2
@dfox maybe add a "type" field at the bottom of the rant creation screen so people can classify rants as rant or !rant and not have to remember to type !rant (maybe auto-prepend "!rant")
Plus it would be nice to have the option to filter out non rants if people want to5
devRant is great because it keeps me in the mood to programme, create and envision new projects. Cheers guys.1
I really appreciate the idea of unlocking items for avatars with a raising amount of ++s!
It's an awesomely elegant way to motivate devs without pushing them and keep them in the regular user base of devrant.
Dear sirs @dfox and @trogus.
You done a very fine job :)3
What if there was a sort of bedge that devrant members got for how long they have been on the platform or contributions?
Almost like twitch's achievement system but maybe displayed in the profile page or beside the ++ badge?
Maybe these could be some badges:
Reported an issue that was resolved
Developed a devrant API based service
Has a project on the devrant projects page
... Stuff like that.9
When a client asks why their website doesn't look good on their mobile and you know you covered most of your bases and they Using a sh1tty android phone where the screen size is like 270px X 310px 🙈1
@dfox i have a devRant Idea.
Achievements - Kind of like Xbox achievements etc ...
For example: (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum)
Total Likes: 2k, 5k, 10k, 25k

Weekly Rant: Top 10, Top 5, Top 3, Number 1
Monthly Rant (most popular rants that month): Top 10, Top 5, Top 3, Number 14
Fuck, I'll always be a noob. Knowing next to nothing about software development, hacking, exploits - just anything.
Felt a bit proud to had reached the level "hacker" on hack the box. Was fun solving stego, crypto and reversing challenges, diving into assembly the first time. Felt cool stepping through a disassemblied executable with radare, and understanding what a NOP slide is...
However all the illusion crumbled down, when I watched this CCC talk on OpenBSD security, where the speaker was underwhelmed with one of OpenBSD mitigations, where they tried to disallow them: "NOP slides?! Srly? No one is using that anymore. Just look at current exploits."
I felt so stupid, which I probably am. Will never catch up with those guys.
But whatever. In the end we all know nothing. We have no clue, but some are more apt in disguising it behind big speech.
(really like this German song: https://youtube.com/watch/...
Those lines always give me a chuckle:
"Man has no idea.
The house has no idea.
The tree has no idea.
The fawn has no idea.
The squid has no idea.
The tapir knows, but doesn't tell us.")3
[Hardware geeks, microcontroller geeks, please come]
Yet another Hacktoberfest tshirt...
Gotcha? (I bet you know who I am)
Just kidding. Just a random project idea I am not sure if it is possible to make from scratch.
It is essentially a usb external storage
And has a lcd that shows available storage space
And some buttons to play snake. (Yup)
Is it possible?
What should I expect when creating from scratch? (Microcontroller, c language, interfaces, etc)20
Hey, here's a suggestion.
I bet that there are lots of people who cannot afford the supporter ++, monthly cost(like me), but still want that black theme.
And my suggestion is to have another way to get something similar, maybe a gold badge, and you get it when you reach a certain number of ++'s, E.g. 1000.
What do you think?13
Me: *Making a very trivial suggestion, that every person with 1 working eye and 1 functional lobe can come up with*
Corporate managers: *Ponder. Verify competitors didn't implement it yet*. Great idea! let's patent it!4
when life gives you lemon, buy vodka and stuff. prepare good vodka martini. then develop an app to sell it across countries.
- Buy some big old computer.
- Sell them as quantum computer.
- Get cash and run away.
Currently this idea may work. 🤔3
Anyone here has an idea of a project to do in Java and Spring (REST stuff) ?
I'm out of ideas :/ and I really want something to build in Java and keep me busy for a while.7
Met someone recently whose goal with their business is to be an “idea person”. Basically, they’d look at your business, suggest an idea, and it’d be so good you’d pay them for it and go on to the next idea.
Spent the next 15 minutes explaining that
1) Ideas without implementation strategies are cheap (on the order of free if it’s something you can completely express in a sentence or come up with after a superficial observation)
2) You need to bring more to the table than just what other people are already thinking if you want people falli g over themselves to pay you for your thoughts5
I'm about to lose my freaking mind on intellij. Ran my tests yesterday and everything was good. I added a new method and a new test case today and suddenly no tests are found. Well they didn't go anywhere!! "Class not found, empty test suite" ... Lies! I've been messing with configurations for over an hour now. I just want to run my tests...1
I had an idea because the Czech Railways keep complaining that someone needs to develop a system that would detect cars and people on railroad crossings... I would call it TCAS - Traffic Collision Avoidance System (just like the one used in airplanes) ... someone already made one, and named it TCAS :-|8
The feeling I had when my final year project idea hit me.
I am so excited and relieved.
It's hard to come up with project ideas this days, really!!!
How about we contribute to a Devrant custom character creator. Like we create stuff for ourselves and others? Or adding more details. Like we can have a separate form for that.
What do you think?
Just gonna leave this here because I am too lazy to write a proper article for my website:
If anyone is trying to create a Vue.js website with Node.js backend do NOT use express-vue, it is unnecessarily complicated and broken. Instead use this method I found.
You will need:
- IntelliJ IDEA / WebStorm / other IDE supporting multiple modules per project and tasks
- Nodejs and npm
Step by step:
1. Create new empty project
2. Add your frontend module using vue-cli generator
3. Add your backend module using Express generator
4. Run npm build in your frontend module once
5. Move or remove public folder in your backend module
6. Create a symlink from your backend module root called public pointing to dist folder in your frontend module root
7. Make sure to add "Run npm build" from frontend module to your "bin/www" task (default task for Express module)
8. Enjoy developing your REST API in Node/Express and your frontend in Vue.js with single-file components and it being served by the same server that is providing the backend.
(Since they are separate modules and you are not mixing webpack and Node/Express you can add ts-loader, stylus-loader, pug-loader or any other loaders without screwing anything up)
For deployment you just need to copy the contents of dist into public on the server. (and not upload the symlink)6
I have an idea on how to structure it but I worry it'll be too weird for most people to follow (starting from binary theory and then teaching machine code and then working upwards to C and beyond) explaining how a computer works along the way, showing the real errors with annotations explaining things, etc.
I've always wanted to teach in this format but I feel as though it's too.. idk, "useless" to most people? But I've never had a friend go through e.g. CodeAcademy and come out knowing how to actually make applications from start to finish without just hacking together random React components and hoping the frankenstein project works well enough.
The target demographic would be those either completely new to programming or just have a fundamental or web-centric preexisting knowledge, or maybe those who simply want to understand computers better.
Am I barking up a shitty tree?28
When all the n00bs start signing up to devRant that have 0 idea what development and/or rants are!!2
When you have a great idea for an app, then find out that someone already done it and with the same name.
My idea is way better than the existing one though... I just need to think of another name.1
Who the f*** came up with the idea to add `com.sun.xml.internal.bind.v2.TODO`
Thanks to a hasty ctrl-space #intellij added this … as import … dafuq2
For those of you who enjoy time away from the keyboard(not that far). I mean games, and well.. Legos!
I have a quite large Lego collection that most just sits there and I love games - card, board, video, whatever - anyways I had an idea last night that merges the 2 which has fleshed into a full fledged idea, and I thought some of you may enjoy it..
(Not yet play tested, waiting on a couple friends to come over tonight to give it a shot)
Make a folder about your idea, generate a visual studio solution about it, and bam, you got something to write in your resume.1
No doubt that Idea IntelliJ is super awesome!! But I still don't understand who could people afford it? It is so damn expensive!!12
I'm really bad at personal project idea generation.
So, do you have any good Python project ideas?
PS. Wanna light up my github chart again.
(aaand to put it in my CV of course)4
So a question to all of the Java developers out there, am I the only one who can’t stand the idea of programming using eclipse or netbeans? I feel like Intellij idea is the best IDE that one can use8
!rant. Just trying to make people feel a bit better.
Ever thought "Ah crap, I have no idea what's going on with this code?" - then immediately second guessed your abilities?
You're not alone.
It's not just tiny projects in there either. Gnome is on the second page :-)1
@dfox I saw a few posts lately, about websites that people did. So besides the collabs, I'd like to suggest a new section. "DevReviews" or what ever. The basical idea is, every one, that is signed up gets one "token" devRant ++ suporters maybee an additional free token every months or whatever.
If you wan't your website reviewed, you can post it there and people reviewing it will get such a token for their review.
To ensure a certain quality of the reviews, I'd put a minimum caracter length and a "dispute" function, where the review is taken to a community voting, if the person giving the review should get the token, or if the review should be dismissed. Additional "tokens" for additional/more reviews can be bought through the app, that could help a lot of devs get quality reviews and testing and earn you some $ for the servers.5
Awful idea of the day - Have a programming language with no comments, but regex preprocessor macros. Use macros to define your own comment syntax and strip them before compiling.
Here is an idea.
What if web designers make their own portfolio with "The Wayback Machine"?
It is free, reliable, fast, and universal.
Ideas below in comments!8
I'd love to start a pet project, but my brain refuses to come up with an idea. 😑
At least I'm used to it, seems like my creativity is not existent.14
devRant can use an update where the notifications get split into comments and +1s because I do like replying to comments but they're scattered in between +1s just too messy4
ok hear me out: local unicode
by that i mean, unicode designates a character that is designated to show up differently for each person
for example, 👤, and your operating system replaces it with you profile picture
or maybe some unused character could be your favorite color and you'd set it in your operating system settings16
Who else thinks @dfox should release a version of devrant for Easter with Easter egg codes for free/discounted swag hidden all over the app?5
Friend: have you ever noticed this problem X? What if we could...
Me: stop right there, I smell a kickstarter7
what if there was a psuedo-html/css markup language which could generate browser-specific pages?
eg. index.psuedohtml ->
then the page size would be reduced a lot. the server could use the user agent to see which to respond with. is this a good idea?8
Super brilliant idea for Windows: when logging on with a password that is only slightly mistyped, or with the consecutively appended number from the previous month, it should still be accepted. So much more usability - Microsoft just cannot reject that!8
Just a suggestion, when scrolling down on a user's profile, their user information should scroll up too along with the 'rants/+1's/comments' tabs and then those tabs stay fixed while the user information hides. Sort of like what Twitter does
There's not much room to view the actual content with all the user information in the way. Of course once we scroll back up, it will then reveal the user info again
So here's a random idea: DDoS defence swarm.
Install the daemon on your server, and every time your server gets DDoS'd, all members of the swarm will mobilise to defend you, but the catch is that your server will have to help other members of the swarm too.
The defensive technique in question can be one of many:
1. Automated IP blocking/reporting with a blacklist in distributed form.
2. Other swarm members counterattack and cooperatively DDoS the offending addresses.
3. Flood the ISP with automated emails to force them to pay attention to the problem.
...or a combination of all of the above.
The only issue I can see with this is abuse potential. A clever person can trick the swarm into DDoSing innocents.15
Me: *creates new Vue.js project in IntelliJ IDEA*
Also me: *waits for 2 hours*
PS: Also could someone please comment with Vue Land Discord invite link/code that's not expired?3
Who here remembers dateprog.com? If you don't, it was a dating site for devs and those who like devs. I'm tempted to ressurect the damn thing, although not as a dating site but more of a social network (think GitHub + Tumblr). Anyone else think that'd be a good idea? I'm also thinking this'll be more than just my weekend sorted, haha. It'd have to have chat, code repos, GitHub login, etc... what do you guys think?
Also not planning to invade the territory of devRant I was just wondering if anyone was interested. Maybe even some kind of extension to devRant, as a social coding platform? I'm not sure aha. Welp, anyway if anybody's interested drop a comment! :)5
Hey, here's an idea. Ethical cryptocurrency mining Adblock.
We've been talking a lot about mining as a revenue source and its ethics here, so that gave me an idea.
I've seen a lot of talk about blocking or boycotting mining websites.
Adblock has the "ethical ads" thing to allow reasonable ads to be displayed.
What if we made the mining equivalent of that: an extension that the user allows to mine with x resources, that prevents websites from doing their own mining, but which redistributes its mining results.
The website could just add a bit of script to tell the extension who they are, and while the page is on the foreground or streaming content, the extension would mine on their behalf.
This could also allow more transparency for the user: "your computer has generated x money for website y".
Wouldn't that be a nice middle ground? Does anyone know of a project like that?7
I like style checkers. I really do. I may not agree with any of the rules they force upon the rules, but I will bury that for consistent code. That said, why, oh why, does this damn thing have to fail out the build rather than just warning me in the IDE. This fucker takes 15 minutes to build and when it fucks the build, it's a huge waste of time.
That said, anyone know how to get check style rules out of Maven and put them in IntelliJ? Myself and my team would love you forever.3
I don't care what anyone says I'm still holding on to the idea of a depressed peoples chatting/dating platform primarily focused on connecting people that don't think they are good enough and trying to make them reevaluate5
Idea - News app that connects to a blood pressure monitor and adjusts your feed accordingly. It'd be so awesome.2
i think i'll transfer my entire work environment on my vps so if my laptop crash or whatever I can just ssh from my phone. Won't really be ergonomics, but better than downtime.14
!rant && type=="idea"
So lately I've been seeing a lot more posts about Devranters organising meetups, having some drinks together and loads of fun like that, absolutely amazing!
What I think is sad is that a day or two after those meetups, I see comments passing by saying "I wish I knew about this earlier" and "Oh man, would've loved to come if I knew!"
Perhaps it's an idea to make a subsection for (un)official devrant meetups/events on devrant so everyone who's interested in meeting fellow ranters can find these posts in one location, or maybe even a calendar with these meetups/events
How do you guys and galls feel about this?1
this is a very Stupid idea so i wont put it to the dssue tracker. but. how about enabling people to host their own devRant servers with their very own rules? this way, the main server will have a bit more breathing room and common interests could have a shared server.
the client Would have the current buttons + empty buttons that can be given a special function from server side.
also, it would be possible to view rants from multiple servers (color coded so theres no mixup in button functions) in one feed.
the client would come with the main server on first start up. the most popular servers would be listed in the settings. also, rants with 50++ would automatically be put into the main server.6
Everyone is hyped on Flutter so I got a new idea.
I'm so distasted of Discord's official mobile clients, and this popped off my head:
Why not we implement it on Flutter?
After all, Flutter has these all nice things, and its certainly better than React Native.
I've laid out some of the things that needs to be done and one thing I've noted and remembered was:
- AFAIR According to b1nzy, former Discord employee, you're gonna need to know the WebRTC packets for Screenshare.
- VC is gonna be easy, and its probably the thing I can support without being too hacky.
hmu if you're up, I'm gonna call it Fluttercord, it won't be big or anything - just a experiment I want to show to Discord since they seem to struggle with the mobile clients4
Seriously I'm using Intellij IDEA Ultimate, should I migrate to VS Code ? or should I just stay where I am ?9
Given how much talk there's around security, I think it'd be grand idea to dedicate a weekly rant to cybersecurity. Could spark an interesting discussion, especially in today's heated climate. Thoughts?
E.g. Best way to increase security/privacy?9
Why is there a - 1 plus option? Just listened to a podcast by stackoverflow where they explained how they removed the down vote option on comments out of the idea that you cant be wrong on what you think..
Just throwing an idea6
An app that gives you just the code segments you need for doing certain programmatic tasks, given keywords, or a simple sentence of what you're trying to do.1
!rant (Feature idea)
Each room has a topic as it's title, and this room acts like a group chat. Individuals can join public rooms and rant about the specified topic. Or, private rooms can be created and the creator can invite people to this room.
Perhaps timeouts could be set so that after a specified amount of time without activity, the room expires and disappears.
Probably a shit idea but figured I'd mention it 😂4
I just came up with an idea while writing and I can't share it because I really need to trademark it first 😛😂
I actually want to rant and pitch a product idea here:
So I am furious when i found out Gravit Designer made offline mode premium only, seriously what the fuck. And Figma is getting no progress for the offline mode either - even lacking grids that I need (I might do isomorphic and I also need grids to keep things aligned).
To be honest I liked Figma more now than Gravit (screw you Corel for fucking up a great platform). So that's why I want to do something similar to Gravit Designer, universal and all, works in browsers, without the forced paywall in my face.
I always forsee premium as a way to add features to products when you need it, and as a way to let a developer know they're doing a good job. I want to make this kind of model stick, and it seems with the money-hungry fuckwits of Corel on Gravit, it ain't happening.
So that's why I want to build an designer app that does what Gravit does, except, I want premium to be more ethical, giving all the core features, add more customizabilty to the interface, and actually make the designer workbench yours. Heck, if its possible we can have Google Drive/Nextcloud integration as well for those who want cloud saves.
I badly want to do this because I believe someone out there shares my sympathy. Gravit was a nice product but was ruined by Corel's greedy paywall system. I won't be paying 99 monthly just to get offlline mode. Affinity and Figma's model is better.
Corel you fucking suck1
Python list and dictionary comprehension is some crazy awesome black magic. More languages should have these.5
So recently I saw a rant about a e2e encrypted social network and started to consider the idea, what do you guys / brother in code think about it2
So, I recently switched from a windows laptop (XPS 13) to a macbook pro and my friend has been bugging me about whether I'll ever go back. He is a wannabe frontend developer and wants a windows laptop. No matter what I tell him, he seems to have tunnel vision. What are your thoughts on this? And what is your personal experience with Windows vs Apple for development?
(Pls don't kill me, it's my first post on devrant, thnx)16
Seing the new UI, I have an idea: how about a private chat (which gets deletet afher logout), and a friendship System? Because I wanna know, if I have friends at all ;¬)1
This is about an "Entrepreneurs", we as a consultant company with experience helping new businesses grow and consolidate, So we get a lot of clients who want our help growing their "startups".
Once I was talking on the phone with one of these who has a "millionaire" idea:
Client: I have a great idea of an app to monitor and control (an spyware) students phones when they were at their schools using geofences.
Me: Ok... What do you want us to do? (Thinking he wanted us to develop this spyware)
Client: I want you to get the support of the National Department of Education so we can convince the cellphone OEMs to integrate this app as an integral part of the cellphones.
Me: (Are you out of your mind?) I don't think it is possible for us to do that, first of all this app violates the user privacy and I don't any end user will consent to something like this.
Client: They won't have a choice, bla, bla, bla.
Me: (laughing inside and trying to learn more) Ok, so do you have an idea of how you want to monetize this?
Client: Since everyone will have this app on their cellphone, we will send them advertising and they won't be able to block it or skip it.
Me: Ok, Do you have a MVP ready?, What's the name of your company?.
Client: I have a presentation only, Do you want it?
Me: So you don't have anything tangible?
Client: I am still searching for seed money, bla, bla
Me: So how did you plan to pay us?
Client: This is a great idea, it will make millions.
Me: I don't think we can help you as you want, since there are very sensible topics about privacy and I need to speak with out lawyer, etc, but I can offer you other services like bla, bla.
Me: We can talk later. (hang up)
Me: (Block that son of a bitch!)
I told everyone the story about this client and we all laugh.
What do you do about this type of wanna be entrepreneurs and their "super ideas"?1
Long day in the office and go out for bottomless pizza except that the restaurant is slower than old dial up Internet
A command-line animation command.
Input frames and an expression
It will be able to reorder frames, play video/frames/music in the background, smooth transitions, diff and patch frames and render into a video
It will be written in Go. No idea what to call it.
What do you think?8
DevRant might not be a perfect place for that question but what the hell.
This is a question for people that do side projects, not only programming but electronic and mechanical as well. If you are a student even better.
(I dont wanna discourage non students but i have limited resources here...)
So the question:
While making a project have you ever had a problem where a limited access to tools was the problem?
(maybe tools was here but nobody wanted to borrow you because of paperwork or some bs.)
I mean that you had a idea or was in middle of a project and you didnt finished/(finished but in crappy condition) because lack of proper tools didnt allow you to?
I realy need your opinion on that subject, i have a nice idea i just have to test the waters.
And please tell me if you are a student or not.8
Question to @dfox
How hard would it be to make the
++ and -- to scroll along with us to the bottom of a long rant and then stop at the line for the next rant?
So I've been tinkering with this idea since this morning:
There should be a dictionary for developers, to help give meaningful names for variables, functions.
With some pipe like interface to narrow down possible names,2
If somebody needs a project idea how about a really dumb JS Framework that allows you do basic DOM Manipulation, just like jQuery, directly in the elements class attribute.
For example this is how a document could look like:
What this does is first, at the body's init-* class, it hides the element with id otherElement at page load. Then, when you click the button, the element with id otherElement gets shown. Instead of *-id-* you could also use *-class-* which selects a class.
Basically the syntax is:
<event>-<action>-<id/class>-<the elements id/class>
Of course this has a lot of limitations, for example the selectors are very limited, but it would still be very cool!3
Idea: devRant hackathon.
Maybe book a location in a few different cities worldwide, have users team up and see who can conjure up the best devRant-based hack3
There are days you feel like a God and there days you have no idea what you are doing in the dev space.
All in all perseverance with a whimsical tone
Startup idea #318 - App that runs in the background while coding.. if a file has more than 150 lines prevent the user from typing more in it!
Oh and also check if the code has tabs/spaces and limit them accordingly. If user uses both prevent them from typing in it!4
When you talk to a friend about a possible cool project, and you find out Google already did it... Is there something they haven't done??1
Today is one of those days where I realize there are hundreds of free APIs and tools to make something amazing and revolutionary, but you can't think of anything that isn't already done or is too advanced for an indie developer. Seriously, I watched Microsoft's Connect event keynotes and demos for these easy and amazing structures, but not a single app idea comes to mind. 😐
If I'm going to make a profit and a good resume, somethings needs to happen.
Can't fucking figure out why I'm the only one who can't solve a DP problem in code, when me and friends use the same idea and no one knows why only mine doesn't work...
We are given a task to solve a problem using DP. My friends write their code with the same idea as a solution. Copying the code is not allowed. I follow the same idea but my code won't work. Others look into it, in case they find errors. They can't find any.
The problem (for reference):
Given a fixed list of int's a = (a_1,a_2,...,a_n) and b = (b_1,b_2,...,b_n), a_i and b_i >= 0, a.length == b.length
We want to maximize the sum of a_i's chosen. Every a_i is connected with the b_i at the same index. b_i tells us how many indexes of a we have to skip if choosing the corresponding a_i, so list index of b_i + b_i's value + 1 would be the position of the next a_i available.
Create a new list c with same length as a (or b).
Begin at the end of c and save a_n at the same position in c. Iterate backwards through c and at each position add the max value of all previously saved values of c (with regards to the b_i-restriction) with the current a_i, else a_i + 0 if the b_i-resctriction goes beyond the list.
Return the max value of c.
How does that not work for me but for the others?? Funny enough, a few given samples work with my code. I'm questioning my coding ability...7
I have a handy RSS Feed Reader extension in Google Chrome that allows me to add RSS feeds and check them in a popup in my browser and get notified when something new comes up. I've added RSS feeds for my email, GitHub, and a whole lot of other things. It'd be really awesome if devRant added an RSS feed too, so users can implement devRant in their RSS feed readers too (if anyone still uses them in the 21st century lmao). What does everyone think?
Trying to explain to a designer the different between padding and margin 🙈 FFS , like come on ! Then I do as the designer wants and it's wrong !
After doubting Deepin OS for 4 days and slangs to Windows, it turns out, ISP is blocking the port 22, which is why I was not able to communicate to my instance through SSH.
One of the major Cellular company and Fastest 4G in the whole country, 'Idea', is blocking the vital port 22. The same company promoted it's Internet service through chain of adv. calling it's Cellular Internet network, "Idea Internet Network (IIN)". Only to make it sound like IIT, IIMs ( elite indian colleges). Check on YouTube, IIN, if available3
I was under fire right now.
One cellular company, Idea, whose Internet service works really good, was blocking port 22.
And other, BSNL, which works terrible at my home, and is not working recently, since last few days( Maybe be data pack was over ), atleast support port 22.
Just got the call from client who has to send sms to all its clients, immediately. So BSNL was not working. And Idea was not supporting port 22.
Still, I gave IDEA Cellular, a try, and luckily it worked today. They started supporting port 22, at the right time.
My ASS is Saved
Man, I think teaching is sooo hard...
it seems I can only start from two points: or I suppose the person is rock dumb and start sentences like "you know what top means right?"
(this is especially true because I'm not in a English speaking country and all of my references are in English (cuz since I learned it, I think it's easier to find good content in English))
or I go like:
"you only have to create a branch with the feature, the a class that implements the X interface to do this"
when the person doesn't even know how to make a function.
And now, I could convince the boss git is important and we should use it (I'm a intern). Result is: I need to teach git (git above all things, I have to teach git) to the other intern because the two interns will be responsible for taking care of the repos.
Not saying that I will fuck up, but leaving the repos to the interns, is this really a good idea 😂4
Why is it I just had an amazing idea for this project 2 days AFTER IT WAS FINISHED?
Oh well, time for a rewrite!
Every new day a new Intellij idea BUG ....
Don‘t believe they actually charge you money for this crapware ... how can anyone be happy with that??3
Prank idea: call a colleague's phone and if they don't have your number (you'll notice by the way they talk), they won't know it's you. Then try to convince them they've somehow created a data breach and you have access to their company's source code... 😈
Oh, and if they do have your number just say you accidentally called the wrong person.
Cross-platform open-source & free password manager.
Cross-platform mobile/desktop password manager application. No backend needed, private data will be encrypted and stored in Google Drive/One Drive/Dropbox etc...
I've used multiple applications over the years but they pricey (especially if you switch platforms) and most of them don't have full cross-platform support.
Also, I've made a POC app with Ionic a while ago, but I didn't like the hybrid app feel.
Have you ever felt that an idea hit you like a truck?
I just had that and my brain went in full analysis mode to see if the idea would hold up under all circumstances. I think it might! But for a good 5 minutes I couldn't think of anything else.
Weird how brains and thoughts sometimes work.8
This is a simple responsive portfolio website template. You can use it and make it yours by changing things and colours to your style and liking! I made it with a lot of hard work, love and of course with code :) I'm not a professional coder, but I tried my best to make it look cool and yet still keep it simple.
Mistakes are proof that we are trying!
I learned so much while making this template, if you use it, please let me know. I would love to see how amazing people can make it! I hope you'll like it!
I have used:
- HTML5 for markup
- Pure CSS3 for styling
- Font Awesome for Icons
- Unsplash for Images
You can add more things to make it even cooler! The comments in the code will help you navigate through it. Have a nice day! :D

Idea, a devrant type website that can be split into different work groups, animation, programming, composing, ect. and then subgroups for more specific jobs, like Reddit and DevRant fused together.7
Wallpaper idea for my phone:
Create a stylish cheat sheet for e.g. git, made for mobile screen size.1
wanted to do a poll for my team, Which should we use for development of spring-boot?
I personally recommend VSCode, what about you guys?21
I'm currently taking an intro to Java programming class and the Prof is suggesting we use Jgrasp. He's open to us using other IDEs. What are some good ones y'all use?10
Keyboard decides to stop working, so I scrounge the office and find another new looking keyboard, which works as I was able to login to my Mac , only as I start typing further , half the keys down work 😂😂😂
So i keep thinking why don't people make reminders of a goal they want to follow.I mean i use it all the time it helps me be more organised.
** Do remember i am a NOOB in web Dev and would like to get better**
++// Any suggestions are greatly appreciated //++
So i came up with a Web App where
" we enter something we want to set a goal based on and the time duration we want it to run it for."
What's the best part " reminder is displayed in terms of a calendar with some animation (where we click on the date to show that we have lived up to that goal for that day)"
The page would also have a counter like a clock which would tell the user who has logged in if or not they are Procrastinating or actually following their set goal.
In hindsight, sending WoL to an untested machine while 30 kilometers away was not a very smart idea.
The machine is up, but does not respond to pings and is unreachable.4
I would like to learning something about machine learning and create something with it. Byť i want it to be something usefull, jave your aby idea what should i try to do ?1
Working on personal app project..got a feature idea... work all night to develop the feature, at morning I realized that feature is useless in my app ..Fuck that moment
Currently working on a distributional semantics database or something like that. The goal is to read natural language texts and construct a graph of words, with directed edges containing the relative distances between them. Then I want to enter one or more words and find all of the possible words which could be used before, after or in between those words, simply based on the previously learned texts. Then I want to find words which are used in similar contexts and build a kind of dictionary that way.
The end goal is to use this to define software or other states and procedures, using natural language.
What do you think of this idea? Can you imagine it being feasable for its purpose? What are your thoughts?3
Browser plugin idea:
Hide all comments that contain blank spaces between words and following punctuation. (Like this .)
This would like eliminate 90% of rambling ranting hate spouting madmen from any comment section!5
How many of you actually work on projects on your free time?
I'm thinking of building a common UI pulling lfg projects from Devrant collabs, Twitter, Reddit, etc... But I have no idea if it's something people would want.
Smash that subscribe button and let me know what you think on the comment section
lfg = looking for group7
I was just browsing around on devRant as usual and I got an idea. Though I'm pretty sure many people must have had it already.
But still, don't you guys think it would be nice to not hide the rant when you tap on it to expand because on slow networks it takes a long time to load the whole rant so we as users could just read the short version of the rant while it's being loaded and save some time. We could then just tap a long rant for it to expand and then read the smaller version until it does, it'll just save time I think.
Sorry if it sounds stupid..! :/4
Guys im about 800km away from my desk, all i have is my smartphone with sololearn, maybe let's gather some ideas for projects which you can create on your smartphone on toilet ?
1. Fake data generator3
Hello.. This is my first rant..
Got an Idea but not sure how to proceed..
A server machine has antivirus and all client machine don't have AV. So I will use the server machine to scan files of client machine.
I implemented this idea using Java EE with the help of windows defender (using cmd via js code). Problem is that I am scanning only file at a time.
How to upload and scan a whole folder/drive?2
I have been trying to come up with some idea for an android app as a side project, but no luck. Can you guys suggest some things I can work on.16
Just putting the idea out there:
How cool would it be to be able to make SVG screensots!
The OS asks every application within view whether it supports SVG rendering. If so, it collects the SVG rendering. If not, it uses a PNG pixelated fallback.
Most form applications and browsers should be able to provide SVG renderings of the view, right?
Imagine the crispness of the screenshots...2
!rant && idea
I'd it'd be nice if we would be able to browse all the images in a timeline.
Currently looking for one picture in particular, but it came across through algo. So very hard to find it again ⊙︿⊙1
Question for intellij idea users:
Does anyone know of a plugin which would allow me to customize order of folders in my project view?
Now all modules are sorted by alphabetical order and I want to sort them by app logic.
I already tried Armory https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugi... which seems to do everything I need, but after restarting IDE the folder order is not being saved properly.3
What if we have a AI that will build code what ever we say?
Is it be a new concept or new programming , it would so easy to build any software.
Maybe in a future some one will do this I hope.3
Anyone know any nice code quality tools/bug finders (besides find-bugs) plugins for Intellij IDEA?2
I worked with Win until now but at my new Job I have to code with Mac.
Any tips as for what I have to know when working with Mac?7
Ok, so I have 47 60 minutes mini DV tapes that don't want to go to waste, does somebody have an idea for a project that I could use these tapes for?
EDIT: they are all in individual boxes, most of them are Sony, but some are Panasonic11
For me Jetbrains idea based IDE/editor in part does just about everything right. Only need to really change the redo shortcut. They provide a warning now so you don't lose your undo history on ctrl+y.
On console both Emacs and vim work for me. These days I prefer vim. Nano will work when I'm a pinch but the lack of undo is really annoying. Especially when the cat walks over the keyboard. You just need start all over unless you can see what he did.
Vim has vertical block so you comment/uncommented stuff real fast. The cange word and change till are also real time savers. Vi is to basic and annoying for me, rather use nano than.
Gedit works great for me when viewing or editting a file real quick.
So yeah the situation dictates what tool suites the best.
Idea is where I can spend my time the entire day so if I had to choice one that would be it.
Idea: On Devrant mobile the beginning loading screen should have the users icon. I feel this would be better over some random character that you would never know.2
My brain as stopped, I know I have done this in the past but I have 100% forgotten how I did it, I am creating a website where when I am singed in/connect to it, it enables more content, the content would be only hosted via my computer, when I did it in the past I did it behind a none upnp router but I have no idea who I did it, I am sure I did use a tool but I forget what.
Now I have no idea how to word it so unable search for something like it, why dose my brain do this two me.
Anyone know how to file deleted and forgotten files in brain OS 0.1.
Record, document and back up your ideas guys lol you might need it in the future.
Being a developer is about signing up on things yu hve no idea how to do
It feels like taking a deep dive into the deep dark unknown
And reassure the client that you will complete the project and satisfy them5
thinking about making git blogging viewer that will just pull markdown files from github blog repos and render them nicely for viewers. would anyone use it?
i imagine people would just commit markdown files to a repo, and then people could view them like a blog and follow a bunch of blogs (repo) on their phone or desktop. i’ll add support for jekyll and other markdown html generators too.4
Is there a practical way to predict the crowd density of a place in real-time?
I was thinking of some way to scrape social media activities and using the geolocation tags to predict the crowd in that particular area?
But I am looking for a more accurate alternative!
All ideas are welcome12
Public reset API for every online food service?
That would be a great idea, if you consider running a cronjob every day witch randomly selects items form your FavoriteFoodArray.1
How about language specific clothing, I would love to don the allegiance to my language on my armor in DevRant (and it makes you easier to identify)3
🙋 Any fancy app idea I could build for trying out React on web and React Native for mobile? Kinda cool and something you always wanted to build but never got to it. #sayNoToTodos5
I have a class on my college on which we can choose what to do as a final project the only requisite being that we need to do something we haven't covered in any class at the degree.
I want to be a Gameplay programmer and saw that many offers ask for Lua, then I think this is an opportunity to do something in Lua and learn the basics but I don't know what to do, any ideas of a simple project I can do in Lua or a framework that uses Lua that can teach me the basics of it?
Tl;Dr: Want to do a small project in Lua, have no idea what to do tho. Ideas?4
Learned about IDEAVim today. Still learning to use it, but I feel that after mastering the commands it's going to boost my productivity.
I heard I should not allow users to inject arbitrary text into my webpage without sanitizing it. Is it a clean solution to just eval it on the (node) server, and if it runs not post it because it's obviously JS and not just text?
Any opinions on that?11
This is just a idea, but sometimes rants can create new rant's what need a place of there own, maybe adding a option that lets you Re-Rant or something like this what will take someones reply as the leading rant and you comment as the first reply to that rant, Letting the original rant to say true to its topic5
Could anyone just give me a good idea to develop? Just a simple idea you know, one I can make just some billions of it. Nothing more :) Thanks!11
I am thinking about working on an app using which users will be able to create a survey or a set of multiple choice or sorting in a particular order questions amongst their friends or colleagues and at the end would get a response about which option received the most votes or which is the most preferred order.
The responses will be anonymous even to the creator of the questionnaire.
Is this idea good enough to work on?
Just wondering if there is a way to read the things that are on the screen of desktop and get values. Eg if there are icon of My Computer and Recycle Bin my program should be able to read it.5
feature request / suggestion / wish:
i would love to "reblog" posts, or any other way they will be visible in my profile ("mark as favorite", "star"...).
the idea behind it is to have a nice little collection of posts i want to keep available to me.
i even have a suggestion for naming the action: "inherit post" ;)
hopefully i did not just miss an already implemented feature :P4
I'm wanting to basically make a program or collection or scripts to automate all the boring parts of my life (cause I'm a lazy shit basically)
Any idea on what would be the best language to do this. I'm thinking python tbh. The end goal is going to be bills being payed ( I will out money manually into a PayPal account or something for this) and shopping being ordered to my house. Like I said I'm thinking python but wondering if there is anything better. I'm gonna end up having a computer or something set up just for theses scripts as will then extend into home automation or whatever I think looks fun. As the best way to learn is to try and making something fun2
Okay, i have a question.
I am a real Noob when it comes to Java programming. I am trying to establish a database connection between my program and a sqlite database. I have everything ready:
- The Model
- The View
Now the problem i am having is defining the DBController that establishes the connection. And i have no idea how to start?!
Please help me :(
when someone suggest you a project idea out of their genius mind,
and the story is either it's impossible or there are tons of implementations.
you'll be like " you are so naive, you don't know anything", but you can't say that because you wanna make friends.
I sometimes think IntelliJ is just sitting there laughing at me ...
Im banging away at my keyboard going ..look at all I have written !!mwhahahaha !!! ... and it's like .. hey look you can simplify ... its just sitting there thinking ... really? all that ?... you have all the lines .. and this is sooo simple ... you complete dumb ass
so i've been playing around with this idea for some time... a relative reference frame physics engine.
because in short, if it's not completely stupid (which I'm still not sure), and if it would work how I think it should/would, then it would solve most (if not all) problems current physics engines have with moving inside/on moving objects (which are inside/on other moving objects)...
...anyone reading this has at least a slight idea what I mean/am thinking about?9
Make a difference integration with twitter. Linking your twitter and when you post a dm to @devrant to post in here.
@dfox, feature idea.
We should be able to make lists or rants, just like Twitter lists. Then people can have a "read later" list or use the lists to rank their favorite rants.1
I've been thinking, and i feel like being the bad guy... So, for now, I'm also an "idea guy" if you know what i mean...
Idea: This site could have a feature like "product recommandations" (just like long rants or something [tyical idea guy saying]), where users could recommend stuff like programs, peripherials, or anything dev related.
This could be done using tags, like certain tags would get sorted into the "product recommandations".
Sounds nice, doesn't it?
(PS.: We should also make a site which is like google, trust me, it would make millions...)
I think medals would be nice to have on devrant. Awarding medals for special occasions might stimulate people. Thought of this after seeing @retnikt's post about his topic being chosen for w46. Something like that would be medal worthy i guess.
If you were working on a very interesting private project, are you scared to show it to people in case someone steals the idea?
So, what's the process for starting to create your idea? I have one, I've given it a minimal amount of thought, a very high level overview, the purpose and some features that I want. Probably just a free service because it's (probably) not anything too serious. So what now? Market research or just start typing? Planning architecture? This is my first time that I've had an idea I think is worth pursuing. What have you all done?
@dfox It would be helpful to see the weekly rant topic in-browser, or have a sticky post with the topic when searching by the weekly tag2
Idea - possibly a bad one - visual studio extension that hits a database to display possible values to supply as a method argument. With caching of course..
I'm thinking along the lines of permissions in a database that at some point have to be hard coded against code to enforce them. Stuff like that.
Possible or beyond stupid?7
So I finally had a good idea.
I have programmed a proof of concept and now dont now what next.
I would like to make it open source and let people benefit from it. But at the same time I would like to make everybody using it to generate money pay a part to charity and a part to me.
How could I do this? Do I need a patent or a licence or what?
Is this even ok?
While conceptualizing, coming up with the best idea is like meeting your soul-mate. It just feels right.

App idea: Platform for ongoing entrepreneurs
I just come from a start-up weekend. I really enjoyed the support we got from 17 different mentors (most of them founded in the past on their own).
Back home start-up funders don't have the access to that mentoring. My idea is to create a platform specialized for founders, where you can share your idea, believes and ask question all around your business.
I think especially in the early founding stages entrepreneurs are full of questions. Helping and discussing with other selfminded people is probably very enjoyable for us founder folks. A difference to the f.e. reddit concept: Users can create "diaries", a place where all storys, questions and posts about your project are stored. Reading a diary from beginning to end shall be a fun experience, reviewing your or others history of their "babys" and following the entrepreneurs thoughts through all stages of founding. Users of course can create multiple diaries.
Functionality will be suited for the listed usecase, for example a "Post as Anonymous" function will be added, if you have to deal with company sensitive data and more stuff like that.
What do you think about the idea? Do you like it? Would you use it? If not, tell me why?
Did someone tried to glue iron beads on their laptop instead of stickers? Playing with the idea right now and don't know how to put them on without damaging the back of the laptop.2
Rather than stickers for +1, would it not be an idea to award for x amount of successful invites to devRant? Keep the community growing etc.3
