The infuriating edgecases of python copypasta.
If you're like me, and you find it easier to noodle in notepad++ and the console, then you may have encountered this peculiar bug.
Try padding blank spaces on an empty string variable, and follow it with print(blanks + str(var))
#for any variable
Now copypaste that along with at least one other line at the same time.
Observe how no matter what you do, print will always output the blanks variable on a separate line, with quotes.
Try rewriting right-justify? No good.
Try using f-format strings? No good.
Raw strings? Inspecting bytes to see where the newlines and carriage returns are being inserted? Nothing.
Copypaste with multiple strings will *always* insert quotes and a new line when printing *any* variable with a string thats been justified.
And this is 100% non-congruent with pasting the same *line* of code *by itself*, which works as intended, no quotes or additional new lines are inserted.
I just went ahead, turned the snippet into a function, and called it from there, which solved the problem entirely.6 -

Question for devs who use Intellij IDEA.
How often do you use livetemplates?
I am a new android dev with ADHD and just discovered live templates. They make my life much easier, for example I have shortcuts for generating recyclerview adapter/viewholder/implementation boilerplate code.
In that way I am able to focus on implementation, and do my coding like building blocks, rather than memorizing every detail of implementation. Also I don't need to go to stackoverflow and copypaste basic things multiple times. Even for example during live coding interview having livetemplates seems awesome, copypasting from stackoverflow would be shameful (I think). Using my own custom shortcuts for livetemplates seems the best way for how my brain functions (I suck at memorizing tiny details, but I remember general idea/flow of a pattern and I would prefer memorizing what to use and when to use, instead of all small details of implementation).
Is getting to dependent on livetemplates a good practice to get used to? Do other developers frown upon a dev who has dozens of livetemplates and relies on them instead of writing all code from memory by hand?8 -
The bug: Some string values for an identifier property in the data objects are being sent from our frontend prefixed with a '0'. Sometimes. When it happens, it usually gets stripped away again by the time it's passed to our backend. But not always.
This 0 is never explicitly set anywhere. I even searched for a few variants of " = 0" in both the frontend and backend projects without receiving any results. You might already be suspecting where this is going.
So it turns out.
The data object which holds this value is being initialized in the aspnet (don't ask) backend and passed to the frontend, which then hydrates it. This value is always an integer number, albeit incidentally so which is why string is used as the actual type. When this object is initialized, it's hardcoded with an anonymous type where this property is set as int because I guess someone figured "it's always an int though". Being a typed language, primitive scalars can't be null objects which means the property's value becomes the concrete int 0.
Okay weird. I can think of better ways of doing this but let's just set it to string as I can't start overhauling things right now. Let's just go find where this value is somehow concatenated into the incoming parameter.
You see, this happens because at the point where the frontend sets this value, it may be an int or string depending on where it came from, and I guess someone figured that in order to cast it to string you just go prop += arg seeing as the prop is empty string and all. Because explicitly casting it or - as much as I get a rash whenever I see it - going prop = "" + arg would be too verbose and unoriginal.
Bonus round: How come the 0 only sometimes made it all the way to our backend? The thing is that this bug has been fixed before. The fix is that because this string is "always" an int, you can parse it to int before passing it to the backend in case it has leading zeroes. This path is only taken in certain views because someone forgot to copypaste their fix into all the places this is repeated.
Sometimes you find a bug and you are just somehow more grumpy after fixing it.1 -

I am a programmer and I totally prefer windows.
1. I'm (besides other things) a game programmer, so I use the platform I develop for.
2. Linux is the best OS for developing... Linux. But I'm not developing linux. I want to use my OS and have it get in the way as little as possible, not test and debug and fix and develop the OS while i'm using it, while trying to do my actual work.
The less the OS gets in my way, the less stuff it requires me to do for any reason, the less manual management it needs me to do, the better.
OS is there to be a crossroads towards the actual utility. I want to not even notice having any OS at all. That would be the best OS, the one that I keep forgetting that I'm actually using. File access, run programs, ...DONE.
p.s.
if i can't trust you, a programmer, to be able to distinguish and click the correct, non-ad "download" button, or find a source that's not shady in this way, I don't want you to be my programmer. Everything you're expected to do is magnitude more complicated than finding a good site and/or finding the correct "Download" button and/or being able to verify that yes, what you downloaded is what you were after.
Sorry, but if "i can't find the right download button" is anywhere in your list of reasons why "linux is better", that's... Ridiculous.
6:15 "no rebooting" get outta here with this 2000 crap. because that's about the last year I actually had to reboot after installing for the thing to run.
Nowadays not even drivers. I'm watching a youtube video in 3d accelerated browser window while installing newest 3d drivers, I get a half-second flicker at the end and I'm done, no reboot.
the only thing I know still requires reboot within the last 15 years is Daemon Tools when you create a virtual drive, but that one still makes sense, since it's spiking the bios to think it has a hardware which is in fact just a software simulation....

b) the "oops... something went wrong" when it's a system error, is just the message title, instead of "Error". there's always an "error id" or something which when you google it, you know precisely what is going on and you can easily find out how to fix it...18 -
Just some figma improvements from the perspective of a new customer:
* Copy/paste is broken. If I want to make a change, I have to create a whole new
component. They recommend cmd+c/v for copypaste but as far as I can see it does nothing
* Needs to be an explicit component drawer button instead of hiding it under assets. Through me for a loop for a couple minutes.
* Empty textboxes shouldn't vanish because you happened to click in the wrong location
while setting your properties.
* Text should start big enough to actually see.
* "send to back/front", "hide item", "change transparency' all need to be prototype actions and more, give us access to object properties both by parent/sibling/child, and by
object id
* create a new frame based on a specified size is non-obvious and if you're creating
a lot of frames, what with copypaste being non-intuitive, it can become laborious.
This is especially so when you're copying frames in order to make minor changes and observe the differences side by side, instead of potentially destructive edits.
* I see no obvious way to manage transitions/animations between frames.
* The difference between frames and groups isn't sufficiently explained. The words
frame, groups, and layers all appear to new users to be used interchangeably, even
if they are distinct things.2 -
i had to throw together a tool to periodically test a friend's network (plus on-demand if needed) as it keeps slowing to a crawl for no reason, i called it "netpoke" and it's retarded and i despise tkinter with all my heart but i needed non-blocking and timers and shit...
i'll prolly never release it as it's mostly heavily-modded copypaste SO garbage but y'know -
We're slowly migrating to VSTS (sigh) from Mantis and SVN for tasks management and code repo.
It's been 4 months now and we still have to move the code from SVN to GIT, asked management when they plan to do that and they still give no ETA, and when asked to make sure our commits stays intact after the transfer I got told "no need for that we're just gonna copypaste the last version of the source code". And most likely the local SVN server we're using is gonna be dismissed.
On top of that, by the way they want to use it, VSTS is being terrible for tracking stuff. I'm so used with other tools at home for some side projects and even though I expressed my concern about VSTS I got ignored over and over...
Bonus (not so) fun fact: branches are something mythic here so everyone else commits straight to master and it's a pain in the ass everytime, because people happen to break things most of the time.
And no, unfortunately this is not a small company.

Seems like latex does not like recursion. Defined a command as itseld by accident and got lots of strange error. Will there be a time where i can accept that copy-pasting code only generates problem?
