"Windows is better than Java".
A classmate literally screamed that out in class.
He'd heard me often bash Windows, I was just in the middle of a friendly debate about Java with the professor, so in a desperate attempt to get attention, his brain concocted this diarrhea of a sentence. And he doesn't even know how stupid what he said was.15 -
And, the other side, husbands 😂
——————————————————–
Dear Technical Support,
Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance — particularly in the flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. The new program also began making unexpected changes to the accounting modules.
In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5 and then installed undesirable programs such as NFL 5.0, NBA 3.0, and Golf Clubs 4.1.
Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I’ve tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.
What can I do?
Signed,
Desperate
——————————————————–
Dear Desperate:
First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an Operating System.
Please enter the command: ” C:/ I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME” and try to download Tears 6.2 and don’t forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update.
If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. But remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1.
Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta.
Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources).
Also, do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.
In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly.
You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Food 3.0 and Hot Lingerie 7.7.
Good Luck,
Tech Support3 -
How reading E-Mail is hard:
Me:
"Dear client,
please send the pictures for content A and Content B.
We also found content C in your spreadsheet. Do you want content C to be uploaded? Please us where to place it.
Regards
Me (who does not consider this a difficult text)
"
Client:
"Hello. Please find attached the pictures for A"
Me:
"Dear Client,
Thank you for the pictures for A.
What about the pictures for B?
And what about that content for C?
"
Client:
(no answer)
Desperate Me:
(Looking at the attachment and finding pictures for A and B)
!!@**! :(
Reluctant Me:
"Dear Client,
Please look at the new iteration <here/>
And by the way.. what about that content C?"
Client:
"Thanks and find the images for Content C attached."
Extremely fatalistic and desolate Me:
"Well thank you. Where shall we put it then?"
Client (answer to the unanswered mail above)
"Thank you. Please don't forget to put in C."

At the peak of the dotcom boom of the early 2000s I had been hired above my skill set because recruiters were desperate to fill seats. I had a pulse and could code even a little so they hired me.
I was the senior web developer on an agency contract with a major corporation working on an ASP (pre ASP.NET) website. I had hired a temp to help me with the workload and one day, in exasperation at my spaghetti code and non-understanding of MVC concepts, he threw his hands in the air and exclaimed, "Do you even know what you're doing?!"
Not having the type of personality to give any subordinate a dressing down for insubordination, I just felt awkward. He was right, of course. I used that as impetus to study more and attend conferences. I'm still a below-average coder because my brain struggles with math and logic. A lot. But that definitely took me down a peg. All those recruiters treating me like I was hot snot on a silver platter when I was really just a cold booger on a paper plate.4 -
To all IT-guys out there, be it the desperate sysadmin or the kind lady of the support team, I whish all of you and your family/friends a merry christmas! 😃

HR really are the scum of the earth. Especially Indian HR.
I tech interviewed this guy on Friday and rejected him. And I told HR to tell him so. Apparently he was "too busy" to type a darn message.
This poor sod who was apparently laid off and was pretty desperate and so he'd been calling every HR he'd interviewed with the past week and no one picked up, including my HR.
Now this lad had my work number because that's what I did my phone interview on. I don't attend work calls on the weekend, especially not interviewees but I had to tell this poor sod that he didn't make it (it was a bit obvious).
This is the exact same HR who rejected a candidate just because they were 2 minutes late to a video call.4 -
My first unintentional "hack" was in middle school, I had been programming for a couple years already and I was really bored.
My school had blocked facebook, twitter and so on because most students are lazy and think everything revolves around their "descrete" cleavage picture's likes. Any way, I thought most would be naive and desperate enough to fall into a "Facebook unblocked" app at the desktop, the program was fairly simple just a mimicking FB page done on C# ASP that saved user and passwords in an encrypted file.
I distributed it in around 5 computers and by the end of the month I had over 60 accounts, and what did I do? I used it to post a gay relationship between two of my friends on fb (one had a gf), it was dumb but boy did I laughed, after that I erased everything as it didn't seem so important.

guy: the FTP server isn't working. I added config files etc but nothing!!

me: uhm.... the ftp server isn't installed......

The music I hear while coding can describe my current mood:
Dubstep and other electronic music -> chilled and focused
Movie soundtracks -> everything I do today is working fine
Anime Openings/JPop -> in desperate need for motivation
Metal -> why is that son of a code not working?!
What kind of music do you listen to while coding?17 -

I had a very informal interview/information session with a hot girl earlier this week.
Being the #foreveralone type, I'm calling it a date with a hot girl, when I tell my family about it. 😍
We scheduled a follow-up session for next week, which will be even more informal than before. Now it'll be more like a date, and I won't feel so bad telling people she liked me enough to go on a second date. 🙃
What can I say, I take what I can get. 🤗8 -
Nature gave me a real life 🦆 debugging friend. He wasn't really helpful though. He flew away shortly after. Probably got a call from a more desperate dev.

Yesterday I installed the linux subsystem. Wrote some python code, but it never run no matter what. It was always the same sintax error. I got pretty desperate after finding no solution on google and decided to reinstall the linux subsystem, erasing everything I made.
Turns out the problem was that python pointed to python 2.7 instead of 3. I'm not a smart man.7 -

Avoiding bad companies starts at the job interview. Remember that the job interview is not only for them to evaluate you, but also the other way around. Make sure to ask a lot of questions. What are they doing, how are they working, what help is there if you get stuck, are they doing code reviews, what will you be doing etc.
The job interview is the opportunity for you to get an inside view of the company. Don’t just accept any job because you are desperate. Luckily qualifies devs are much needed in companies.
Also, make sure to go to multiple job interviews so you can see the differences. I think it can be difficult to avoid in the beginning, but as you get more experience, you can sort of tell whether it’s a good or bad company at the job interview.
Though sometimes you are just unlucky. In that situation: leave. It is so good damn easy to get a job in this field.3 -
Thinking of auto adding ‘you dumb fuck’ to every email I send to a client. Fucking useless time wasting bastards.
Example: I’ve forgotten my password for the cms can you send me a link to reset it.
The login page has a link clearly labelled ‘forgot password?’.
I send a screen grab with a big red circle around the link and some polite text, which I was desperate to add ‘you dumb fuck’2 -

Hello everyone 👋
I see people blaming the developers when you see a crappy software product , saying that they have done a bad job.
But even it could be true also it could be the product managers who didn’t give enough time todo what needs to be done or project scope is too big for the persons knowledge.
I’ve worked in a company where deadlines were so tight I didn’t have enough time to proper UI and Testing. I used to be only developer who has someone experience and I had to train the interns as well. I am also to blame to joining such company but in desperate times takes desperate measures.
And now when i’m leaving the company and I have spend 2 years of my life for apps that I’m not proud of.
Just rant. Please feel free to give ur thoughts2 -
I really really want to start working.
I have social anxiety, but my mom is really on my ass about bringing in money. I need some sort of job that I can do from home on my computer.
Something related to programming.. Administration.. Whatever. I don't mind having to learn something new to find work.
I have no formal qualifacations.
I don't care how easy or hard it is, as long as I can make at least $100/mo.20 -

I got the task to set up an NAS, because "server has too high maintenance costs".
I built two databases for this company and the big boss loved my work. (spoiler:not because my work was outstanding but because I, as a student, am cheap and willing to learn).
And now? Reality hit me for good. I looked for a enterprise worthy NAS solution, sent them the details, they bought it and now it's 00:00 in Germany and I'm sitting in the empty hall, trying to configure the storage to work like they want it. On a friday. Alone. As the only member of the IT-team. With way to much responsibility.
So... Yea, fuck you for good. I hope your backup gets an disk error at the same moment i quit. (but first gimme mah monney)3 -
So we are having lunch on a normal day when our boss announced that one of our clients are visiting and our boss is telling us to standby and act like we are working so that the clients will see us in action.

A recruiter emailed me.
And called me (and left a voicemail).
AND texted me.
About a job opportunity in California (I live in Texas).
That requires experience writing performance critical and thread-safe code in a large multi-threaded codebase (I work primarily in JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem, fat chance of that).
Responsibilities listed as: Focus on Supercharger Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) software features. I don’t even know what the fuck that means.
Opportunity is for a 3 month contract.
Why are you so desperate, lady?9 -
Well I just had a breakdown a few hours ago.. For a too calm guy like me it's really rare, but also not surprising. I have my third deadline in a row, haven't really seen people over the last month. Thanks guys for helping me survive socially during this month, I'm a very social guy usually, so I really needed that.
Apart from that, last time I was hopeful about my schedule and sent it to my advisor she called me the day after shouting that it's not realistic and I'll never be done on time. I could have worked harder on February, that's true, but for fuck sake she ruined all of my motivation in a 10 minute call.
I wish I liked what I'm doing. I wish people I work with would have appreciated what I'm doing and encourage me. I wish I was 2 weeks to the future when I have not even a slight thing to worry about.
Get me outta here 😩3 -
6 months after starting developing my webapps I found out that I have one competitor that runs basically the same application service 2,5years already. There was no clue of him when I researched the field just came across by accident today. I feel quite desperate now he has features I didn't even think of and which are amazing. I don't know what to do now7

HR is getting so desperate they are prescheduling me interviews attached with CVs in the hopes that I will interview the candidates for a senior, even though the candidates have no experience whatsoever in embedded software programming. Workday, JIRA and Excel does not count you absolute fucknuggets.
For fuck sake, I asked management to hire new grads or juniors, at least I can get a person motivated to learn, but I swear they just don't listen.
They just are content with wasting my time lol3 -
!rant I’ve been with the same company for 6 years, but the past few years things have been continually declining. Nothing has been awful, I just feel like there is very little room for promotion, or even worse, knowledge gains (we do a lot of win forms, c# mvc, vb6, sql stored procs). I’ve been so desperate to learn “new stuff” that I’ve been picking up contract work where I can find it (for nights and weekend projects). I’m excited to say that the company I’ve been doing most of my contract work with has offered me a full time remote position! It’s a 30% increase in pay, all new tech (mostly React Native, ReactJS, GraphQL, Nodejs, python, and integration with existing .Net applications)!
Feel honored DevRant, I’m telling all of you before I even share the news with my family (with the exception of my wife)!1 -
I recently got into an interview where the interviewer made a huge mistake:
R: “what’s your resignation period?”
Me: “well, long story short I’m working on a contract so it’s actually short, just 1 month”
R: “mhhh could you make it 2 weeks somehow? We may really need to start sooner”
This is a sentence you shouldn’t say as a recruiter as now I know:
- You are desperate to find someone
- You have a time urgency
- You failed to find someone before
- You basically confirmed you want me in9 -
So, company I work at, is on desperate need of PHP developers, who can work in WordPress and Magneto. Company announced vacancy.
Only 20 CVs were dropped 4 days before from today. So company called all of them for interview and I was one of the interviewer. Most of applicants told me that they know Laravel but not WordPress.
I was like fine. Maybe they can work on WordPress too. But I was wrong. Here are some funny interviews:
Me: how many types of inheritance does PHP support?
Applicant 1: 7. Single, multiple, etc..
Me: Do you know difference between interface and abstract class?
Applicant 2: (he just said some gibberish)
Me: why do u prefer Laravel to WordPress?
Applicant 3: because by default Laravel support payment gateway, so we can create e commerce application faster. WordPress doesn't support payment gateway.
Me: how many WordPress site you have worked on?
Applicant 4: I have 4 themes in WordPress.org
Me: Do you create all of them by yourself?
Applicant 4: Yes
Me: Do u know difference between require and include?
Applicant 4: No
Me: Do u know difference between query_posts and WP_Query?
Applicant 4: No
Me: (facepalm)6 -
I got a dayjob in a company. I got an error. I cannot solve it and I am so desperate. So I go to stackoverflow, nobody answers. I post on git issue, but nobody solves the problem. So, I pay someone to solve it, like Hackhands.com to find a mentor. There is no mentor that can help. So I pay more, hired a peer, and finally a development team just to help me. They get paid only if they solved it.
But each of my folks repeat my same steps, asking on stackoverflows or github, and none of these help. So, they end up hiring their own friends and mentors. Their friends also end up paying (pay before problem solved) someone to help them.
their friends pay for friends of friends, then friends of friends of friends
And all of a sudden it becomes a giant MLM scheme.
And those people they paid for actually work for a company behind the scene which I am a founder of 😁
Multi billions startup idea, is it?4 -
We are a web developer team of 4 people. The system we manage is huge because it's a huge organization.
We use php.
Requirements grow rapidly and debugging became a nightmare. So we decided to move from procedural to OOP to ease it a bit.
And we have this one guy in our team (joined recently) who doesn't understand the benefits of following OOP. He is the one who manages most side projects among us too.
We have tried hard to convince him and now we have almost given up.
So I am asking you guys, please give me some ideas of how we could convince him to learn and follow OOP.7 -
So Zuckerberg wants to integrate Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook together.

Interviewing at companies that have exactly the same kind of problems/people/politics makes me sad and a little desperate.
Probably best to stick with the devil I know (for now). After all, why trade in crap for a turd: it's shit either way.3 -
So the other day I randomly checked out a few job postings on some recruiting agency’s website. Didn’t even sign up or anything.
The very next day I get a call from them. The person on the phone tells me they noticed I had visited their website and was wondering if I was interested in applying to any of the offers. Even as a developer I was totally taken aback as to how they managed to track me down based on a single visit.
I believe I ended up on their website by clicking on a link on LinkedIn. I’m assuming it’s via LinkedIn that the managed to get my info (phone etc.). All in all I’m not extremely surprised. But to me it’s downright creepy and it makes me feel like I’m being stalked. Also it makes recruiters look totally desperate and I’m not sure I would want to entrust them with the responsibility of handling my career4 -
I went to every career fair in college. Every semester I dressed up, redid my resume, and went like a champion desperate for work. Last fall I went, and only gave one resume. As I was leaving, I turned back after a question popped into my mind. Watched the recruiter put that resume in the trash. Worlds worst recruiter.
-
So today at the beginning of the class, our teacher asked us to write a function that translates a given string to "leet speak" (basically having to replace every character to another).
Some used python dictionnaries, some used arrays...
And the two people arround me wrote a program with a condition for EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER.
It kind of made me wanna die or kill them 😥7 -
Even though I bragging about how good my few projects are to the people I talk to them about, I undervalue my worth as a developer.
Even though I am desperate for money, I've only recently started trying to get work in the dev community (with little success) because I actually feel that I'm not a good enough developer..17 -
HR people on LinkedIn. What the fuck? Do you seriously believe you can attract qualified developers by telling them you’re looking for ninjas, jedis or life savers? I for one am still fairly new to the job so I don’t consider myself to be by any means a coding wizard, and I don’t think any strong senior developer is gonna be seduced by your catchy terminology (I may be wrong about that). Come on, talk to us like any recruiter would in any other line of business. No need to replace the words "qualified" or "experienced" with your stupid magic words, unless you want to sound like you’re desperate7

At the beginning of my IT career I was so desperate to get into this field that I even read a PHP 4.3 intro book and applied for a php dev role

The piece of software I'm working on at my job just feels fucking stupid and brainless right now. I know it is not, I know it's working, I know it'll be actually useful to its users but I don't feel like that.
I usually go by telling myself "Most of the time I do like what I do, but sometimes it's just work that has to be done" - but for the last month or so it felt like my motivation is completly drained and not coming back fast enough. Just thinking about it feels like desperate, tired crawling on Legos.
On the other hand, at least I've got some motivation for my studies back which feels great. -
Feeling sad and disappointed during a really intense sprint. Have been working for the past year on a web app made with fucking jQuery. I fixed a lot of bugs, and caused quite a few of my own.
And all this happened because I was desperate when looking for a job. I was too afraid to take my time and find something better. I just took the first offer I got.
I'm thinking of quitting, but why should I do them a favor? I'll stay and keep getting paid until they kick me out.2 -
Dear random blog/news website,
Why do you equate a random visit via a Google search to wanting you to bombard me with notifications? What is wrong with at least waiting for frequent or multiple repeat visits before asking for notification access?
As shocking as this may be to you, most of us are not desperate for content from random, virtually-nameless websites/blogs. If that is you, please seek professional help.
In fact, please seek professional help anyway.
Sincerely,

Hey devs, really need some help here. This is driving me crazy...
We're currently taking issues from the company via mail. We've got a group mail that goes to the three of us at the IT department. Problem is, colleagues just forward customers emails without event trying to help, which means that we get stupid issues like "I can't sign in", and no further information. We're currently using Jira, and I was thinking perhaps we can set up a Jira Service Desk? Then we could have an internal help desk where issues could be submitted, and require some important fields, and perhaps add a checklist. Have you had any experience with Service Desk? Do you think it would be a good idea to have a "normal" person have an account there as well to filter out the normal "Have you tried restarting your computer" stuff? Is it suited for non-developers?
Any other ideas?
Yeay, messy question, but I'm fucking desperate...5 -
Worst interview has to be for a web agency where the boss was clearly not ready to take anyone on and almost felt desperate. He got me in for a trial day working on something for their benefit (pretty sure that's illegal) with no direction on what wad to be done other than some hand sketched drawings and access to FTP. They put me on the worst machine possible which kept crashing every 5 mins which an hour in decided to cut the internet and wouldnt come back on so i walked...

I sent money to a scammer 😔
They said it is a security deposit and I didn't think twice. I thought I was smarter than this but clearly I am not.
I got too greedy, lazy and desperate for money.
This is what happens when you isolate yourself from reality.

Go to meetups and talk to people. Give presentations at meetups if you can. Get involved in community projects. Love coding. Use your downtime to study new stuff.
When talking to potential employers be positive and enthusiastic about your technology.
EDIT: Oh, a few more. Don't seem desperate for a job. Without saying anything, potential employers should feel like you have other offers and they're being evaluated by you. Ask questions about their company if you get an interview.
Try to give off an air of being in control and having a number of choices in your carreer (even if you're living off ramen every day).
The pressure should be on companies to hurry up and snap you up before another company does.
Be honest but a little spin won't hurt. -
So guys I'm about to buy a laptop, I want something that will endure, I was thinking about 16 ram, 1 TB with SSD, and obviously 17.3" screen, any suggestions?23

This is going to sound like a ridiculous question, but how do you all find both the time and the interest to work on side projects for your portfolio / GitHub? I always seem to start strong, get burned out, and can never find the inspiration to break away from the 9-5 of my day role to work on coding something else... Where do you find ideas? Designs? Concepts? Interesting solutions? I'm in desperate need of building some GitHub repos for my portfolio... 😅😰7

Some guy bought a whole bunch of city specific domain names once and wanted me to code the websites for him and manage and support the sites for 5% equity in his business. I told him you realize I can buy my own domains for very little money and build the sites for 100% ownership. His idea was not so bad for that time but he just thought that I was a nerd and he could just use me and I would just be passive and go along being that I'm desperate to make friends.

Today I feel I made it
So today was my second day in new job. I am very happy because it is great improvement in all imaginable areas from my previous one. I feel treated better, colleagues seem to be more mature and friendly, I finally work again in English- speaking environment and etc. etc. i could go on and on..I ranted here couple of times when things got rough and it helped. It is very important during those desperate moments to see other perspectives and this app helped me tremendously! If YOU are reading this now and you are going through s****y times - just hold on and don’t give up on yourself, if I made it - you can make it too!
P.S. it’s not like I am feeling like a best programmer in the world or I am paid a lot, but sometimes you get the feeling that you are in a right place and right time, doing right things.1 -

Just saying hello. I'm a Google Store chronic downloader and found this. I'm so happy to see so much conversation around coding. I've been learning by myself for 2 months and since then I've been desperate to have someone to talk about programming and stuff. I hope I can learn more and have fun here :)5

2 years ago I told myself I'd never learn PHP. 2 years later I'm a desperate college student in a town where the only web dev companies rely on PHP. I didn't want to cave and learn such an obsolete language but it's looking like I have no choice. Goodbye, innocence :'(13

My last Saturday (no atomoxetine):
- laid in bed
- watched youtube
My today's Saturday (yes atomoxetine):
- went to the store for food (leaving my home is a HUGE problem for me, can't overstate this)
- washed dishes
- swiped every room
- deep cleaned cat's litter box
- deep cleaned the toilet
- washed both sinks
- did the laundry
- cleaned all three of my laptops
- cleaned my monitor
- washed both mousepads
- took a shower
- reorganized the storage room
- reorganized the bookshelf (yes, it's singular, and I store quite a bit there: books, chargers, etc.)
I recommend Atomoxetine to everyone who's autistic/ADHD. It's a great option if you don't have access to Ritalin or Adderall. If they're illegal in your country (Russia, I'm looking at you), chances are that Atomoxetine is legal.
Can't imagine my productivity on something way stronger like Adderall. Soooo desperate to get it.14 -

I'm not getting why you guys complain about being judged for "hacking" while using the terminal.
In my case I'd occasionally like to open a terminal in my lubuntu (or archlinux in my previous times where the laptop was running smooth and i had to learn everything about how an OS works and spending most of the time searching about errors to find more desperate people and no answers but the community's hopefully growing and it's the best distro if you're an experienced linux user but not in my case so i had to use lubuntu for now until mastering it) to trigger those around me and try to prove them wrong afterwards.
I'll hit the airport for fun when i have time.3 -
The Tale of Mouse and Watch
Once upon a time, a mouse wanted to know what time it was. So it asked the first guy who came along, but it didn't understand Suaheli. Anyway, he just had mumbled, gotta kick the cat in its lazy ass.
So the mouse moved on and nearly got it when it met another mouse who bad been sewn to a dead elephant's ear exactly 27 years ago - but unfortunately, it had forgotten the time of day when that had happened.
The seeking mouse came up with the idea of doing something with the sun, but since it was only dumb mouse, it looked right into the sun and was blinded.
Now pretty desperate, it tumbled through the gutters that were full of trash. Accidentally, it fell over a dumped watch, and the mouse broke its nose.
The lesson: sometimes, even a blind mouse may find a broken watch!4 -

So, the Network I was on was blocking every single VPN site that I could find so I could not download proton onto my computer without using some sketchy third-party site, so, being left with no options and a tiny phone data plan, I used the one possible remaining option, an online Android emulator. In the emulator running at like 180p I once again navigated to proton VPN, downloaded the windows version, and uploaded it to Firefox send. Opened send on my computer, downloaded the file, installed it, and realized my error, I need access to the VPN site to log in.
In a panic, I went to my phone ready to use what little was left of data plan for security, and was met with no signal indoors. Fuck. New plan. I found a Xfinity wifi thing, and although connecting to a public network freaked me out, I desided to go for it because fuck it. I selected the one hour free pass, logged in, and it said I already used it, what? When?, So I created a new account, logged in, logged into proton, and disconnected, and finally, I was safe.
Fuck the wifi provider for discouraging a right to a private internet and fuck the owner for allowing it. I realize how bad it was to enter my proton account over Xfinity wifi, but I was desperate and desperate times call for desperate means. I have now changed my password and have 2fa enabled.1 -
I like how google is trying to catch up in the competition of video calls, and chat...

Dear recruiters, if you prefer telephone calls, why not also learn how to leave a message on a voicebox, display a caller ID, and list your phone number on some legit page on the internet?
Otherwise you'll leave the impression of a desperate outbound call center agent paid not by leads and conversions but just by the quantity of calls made during the day. If I had such a job, I'd also call voiceboxes and busy developers all day and get money for listening to signals tones before hanging up. -
Guys who "can't get girls"… treat women like people, like, you know, like they're… humans? Because that's what they are?
Once I gave up on trying to give girls special treatment, I got a lot of attention. This goes both ways, no matter if you hate them/worship them. I was desperate, I gave up, I dropped my facade, and I went into my first relationship. I was never without a partner since I was sixteen. Partners kinda overlapped, and when I knew I was going to end a relationship, magically, another relationship emerged out of nowhere.
The only time I wasn't in one was after my ex left me when I was at the lowest point of my depression. I took two weeks off, looked for a partner more meaningfully, and boom, we're together for I don't know how long, we're in a polyamorous relationship, we never had a fight ever.
Overall, my number one advice is you should stop giving women special treatment psychologically. Talk to them just the way you talk to your friends at the bar, or to any person you're not sexually interested in. You being horny ruins everything.4 -

Anyone run into the HR app called taleo when applying for jobs? It is so bad. Apparently each company has a different database so you have to re-enter all of your employment info each time you apply for a job at a company that uses taleo. Unless desperate I don't apply for jobs that use taleo.3

I just can't get over the fact that the .com domain I have been eyeing for is still out of my reach. This name popped to my brain after brain storming over a week when I started making sites when i was a teen.
The domain has been sitting there unused with a basic webpage containing some ugly web design from 90s era.
I have been eyeing it for over 6 years now and just found out he renewed it for yet another 3 years!
I don't want to approach him about it either, I'm not that desperate for it that I'd pay millions for it.
The wait continues...

Shady business practices. You see a lot of stories of people getting fucked over on here. Companies giving applicants a "coding test" to get work done for free, or guys promising to pay when the work is done(and then bailing), deserve to be thrown screaming from helicopters.
Some quick advice for people starting out:
1. If it's important, get it in writing. Promises are worth precisely dick, unless it's legally binding.
2. Exercise caution in interviews. The shadier companies know a lot of applicants are desperate, and they take advantage of that fact if they're allowed to.
Not sure if I'm rambling at this point, but fuck it. 🤣 -

Dad: "Which Linux are you even using?"
Me: (Oh boy) "Ummm, currently I'm on Slackware... 😬 😅"

Service based companies and Nepotism
In India, most IT companies hires their own family members. Even they promote their own family members. One of the my friend worked as dev he found that mostly his co workers are relatives of founder or managers. He told me that he understand if they get hired from some kind of references but that's not case here. Even HR is also family member of manager/founder. Most of this guys don't know any language. Even they don't have any kind of professionalism
Imagine that working on companies where your co-workers and HR is family members of managers and founder. Where you find help because everyone will against you because all are family members.
they deduct PF of workers who are not relatives and never pay tax to goverment. In india, most developers are desperate to get job because that's what education system and society taught them.
Hope startup culture will kill all these shitty companies1 -

So, I'm about to be up shit's Creek. I need a new source of income, ideally either a new job or becoming a freelancer. I have been making intranet sites with ASP.NET for a while now, and I can tell two things:
1. It's too corporate minded, so I'll need a fucking degree
2. It's too corporate minded, so I'll be stuck with people like my boss, who still use tables to align content despite the project having bootstrap.
I need to do something more fulfilling, but I probably will have to leave my job by December anyway due to some major fuck ups in my life, do I need to get something lined up. I have been brushing up on my HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills, but when it comes down to it, I suck at design so my "portfolio" is blatant clones to learn CSS and shitty Spartan things.
Basically, I'm anxious, terrified, and unable to figure out what comes next. Do I keep sending job applications and praying to whatever deity will listen, it do I start figuring out this freelance thing? If freelance, then how do I get into it? I'm terrified and desperate.1 -

Hey guys,
At first I would like to say sorry for asking a technical question here but I am really desperate.
I have a dell xps 15 and after trying to install arch and updating grub I can't boot from any Linux USB-Stick anymore.
I tried it with Linux mint 18.2 and 18.3. (they both worked before) and when I boot from them the error 'file /boot not found' flashes up and after some time I get the following error message (image)
After a few seconds of that error message it continues booting and then crashes while booting.
I am very thankful for any help and ideas how I could fix this.

God I’m having the hardest time focusing on my task, it just seems so inconsequential compared to the shit going on in the world.
Here in my own country we’ve got issues with the government and their desperate grabs at power, citizens rights being trampled all over as if they mean nothing.
Of course the conflict in Ukraine I can’t peel my eyes away from the Reddit world news feed.
The explosive inflation worrying about the cost of food fuel and rent.
Diesels not cheap, and the electric company wants to spike up the price of already over priced electricity by 10%.
I’ve got a trip coming up which I’m thankful for but it’s expensive and money isn’t getting any easier to come by.
I’m genuinely worried about what the WEF is attempting to accomplish and the amount of power they hold over the western world.
And with all that in my mind…. The work in front of me of updating this stupid game to modern standard and refactoring it to actually make sense and be maintainable… just seems so fucking pointless.1 -

Newbie Linux User - Story about not working GUI
I am a proud Opensuse user for about a year, still struggling with some basic stuff, terminal, etc.
The story begins when a few days ago I try to login to the system. To my trusty Gnome. I get stuck on login loop;
successful login - > black screen for a second - > back to login screen.
Zero feedback, not a single error message
Stress level increases taking in count that I am at a climax at my university with tons of projects on my computer.
I assemble the Team A:
Me, Google, Stackoverflow, and for desperate times Russian Stackoverflow
Over 4 hours, found out that my user is affected by this, tried restoring default Gnome configuration, went through bunch of logs only to find out that every user gets the same errors, still only my not working. Even KDE denied to cooperate with the same result.
So what went wrong you may be thinking.
One line in file replaced by miniconda, that changed the PATH.
Linux is the best detective game that I've ever played.
Is it something that I should get used to?2 -
I'm almost at the point where I give up on this project, I'm banging my head too hard against the wall here.
I'm making an android app that should make it easier for local fishermen (hobby stuff, not enterprise things) to submit their catches to the local unions. For that to happen, I need to be able to fill a form in the app, more specifically, this form: http://karupaa.com/dk/...
After some research, I managed to figure out its probably a POST request, but I may be very wrong here.
Also figured out the URL to post to is probably either the first url given, or this one: http://karupaa.com/dk/...
I'm extremely confused at on this area, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
I dont really know anything about POST or GET requests, except for the quick comparison I read on W3Schools. Its an area Im lost in.

AI hacking attempts being spotted in the wild because they're too polite
https://someone.elses.computer/@mik...
there's actually a similar vetting process in the crypto industry where you have to swear or you won't get hired. forget why now
this seems optimistic to me because companies generally don't do security. a hacker desperate for money has less money to blow on AI hacking than someone invested in protecting their company would on AI pentesting. poor low level pentesters I guess though -
So, I realised that I know my manager personally. He has left the team. The thing is, I thought I was crushing on him instead it's just knowing him. I never had any personal conversations. Now, there is nothing I can do to interact. I do not want to seem as someone who likes him as that looks desperate. I know it's not a platform of this kind of posts but any advice? During the whole 1 year lockdown I haven't interacted much with anyone except him and someone from my team. I really see his insta profile 3 times a day. Think about him a lot. Again, do not have a crush, just want to know him more so I get to know if he is nice person to have in my life. Any advice?9

It started when life caught me off guard. It was one of those transition moment when you realized you are no longer a college student and you need to get a job.
I was clueless that time (still clueless - smh) that I didn't prepare my CV nor interviews. I got into panic mode and ask help from career service in my college (I rarely ask for help, and when I did that, I am really desperate).
Long story short, I got a job from the career service's connection. I don't think I did well in both the interview and technical test (of course, no prep or whatsoever, what do you expect?) but seems like we both in need of each other (maybe because my grades when I was in college is good... and maybe because my starting salary is low enough... and maybe because there was no better candidate at that moment) that I get picked.3 -

The problem is... my audio driver doesn't work. I tried to update it (from Realtek's website), but... after installing the new version of the driver, it asks me to restart my PC, I do that, and then... nothing happens, the problem remains.

so I got asked how much I wanted as my monthly salary for my first dev job and I said 300 USD, did I overshoot ? I haven't gotten a reply yet and I am worried I messed up
backstory, I had this online video interview but during that period i was working for my dad in a remote village, the background was terrible, I had to tilt my camera to an odd angle to make it less terrible, after all the usual talks on "our company company's vision and mission........ we are trying to create....... blag blah blah.......". he commented on my area and I said I was working odd jobs to keep up,
him: how much will be enough for you monthly ?
me: I just need enough to pay for internet and maybe a little left for other stuff (I was this desperate)

Story time!
I spend few hours last Friday debugging piece of code I wrote. It was based on working code, also authored by me. It was stuff for sending some data to transmitter, all in Python, nothing horrible or tough.
I wasn't able to understand, why older piece of code works (e.g. data are transmitted) and newer don't even when function bodies were same (I was desperate, so I copied-pasted my own working function there). Both function were in same file, bot syntactically correct, newer one was definitely running but still no transmigration from there.
And then it came, enlightenment at Friday afternoon. I forgot to actually push my prepared packet to radio. Older one was encapsulated in transmitter function and newer one wasn't. I was so focused on possible error in packet creation I forgot to send it?! Seriously?! Unfortunately yes.
Moral of the story? When debugging something, try step back (or up in my case) for a while. -

So I went to a service center to repair my cracked mobile screen. I thought that the process would be completed in a few hours so I didn't took any backup.
Guy: You need to hand over your device for 2 days.
Me: Okay, no problem just fix it. (At this point i was desperate because a bunch of shops already told me that the complete model needs to be replaced)
Guy: You also need to remove any screen lock from it.
Me: But why?
Guy: We need to test once we fix the display. The repair util can be accessed by an inbuilt app.
Me: *Internally screams, my pr0n collection, my browsing history...*
Me: Just give me a minute. *Uninstalls a bunch of apps*.
Me: Handing the device to him. *crying internally and thinking if anything was left*.
Me: While returning, Fucking fuck now how am i gonna suppose to book myself a cab.. *facepalm myself with a fist*1 -
Completed all interview stages with a recruitment firm last month. Passed all the stages. They reach out to me to begin with. They reach out to me saying they are currently waiting to hear back from the partner firm whom they shared my profile with but I was successful in the final stage. I asked the recruiter what's up like a month ago and she said she was waiting to hear back from the partner. It's been 4 weeks now and I don't want to seem desperate so I am holding off on emailing the recruiter again. Do u guys think it is a bust offer? The company is prominent here and I feel they wouldn't make me go through all the stages of interview if they didn't have a placement for me. I am so impatient coz I am basically out of a job rn, haven't been paid in the second month and man I need this job coz I know they pay well. What do I doooo???1

I think I was around the age of 11, and got a brand new C64 with 1541 floppy. The manual of the included floppy disc with some programs described the program startup with 'load "name",8,1'
So I typed (exactly that) 'load "name",8,1' and got '?FILE NOT FOUND ERROR', did it again, same error.
After half an hour of reading the manual and trying it several times, I gave up and went to a friend with a C64. I told him the disc doesn't work, if he could help me out.
He put the floppy disc in and typed 'load "frogger",8,1' and seeing the command I realized what a tremendous idiot I was.
Surely it worked, he could play frogger.
Went home desperate and broken with my disc and from that day on I could operate that machine.
I soon started to play around with basic and a bit of assembler. -
So today at the electronics shop I saw an 500Gb on sale. For some reason it also came with a code for Battlefield 2042. The price label was written in a very confusing way, so I thought it was actually ~22EUR instead of ~118EUR off. It sounded too good to be true, but my train of thought was that it's entirely possible that they are really desperate to get people to play their shitty game.
Unfortunately it was too good to be true and it was actually actually 96EUR. What a scam.
In case you wanna look it up yourself, you can also find it online (For a lot cheaper than in that store). "WD_BLACK 500GB SN750 SE NVMe"
For some reason it's cheaper with the game, I wonder why (But it's still a tad overpriced) -
Ummm, maybe it's a little bit offtopic but could anyone help me with pointers in C language? The best would be some free exercises or tutorials from the internet that I didn't find...(I was looking for a long time before this desperate post...:/)

So I’m bit desperate for headless chrome documentation. Went to SO. Was about to ask yes I was about to do tough step. Ask a question.
I clicked blah blah, searched topic: Headless chrome documentation. Nothing previous was there.
So I clicked to proceed to write a question.
And then I asked myself do I really want to put dirt on myself now?
I freakin left and I’m asking our colleague that worked at google, and also I’m going to rather ask directly google for official docs since there is nothing only blogs...1 -

Hello Devrant! It’s ya boi!
Update. Currently back in school in the Netherlands. Studying law and technology. Yeet.
But yeahhhh so stressed omfg. Finals already in October. This school is a mess.
And I’m the middle of that my thesis got rejected so here I am. Crying. Asking y’all for ideas. Anything you can think of please say.
It’s gotta be tech but a legal question. Ethical is fine too tbh. So if there is anything you’ve wondered or think is of please tell me the question. 😭
all I’ll say is that the last one they said was too vague and not specific enough. And ideally it should be AI or data science but anything tech would do.
Not sure if this is the place to ask but thank youuu.6 -
I'm starting to really regret not meeting more professors in school. I'm trying to found a ctf team at my university and can't get a single professor to agree to advise the club (it's required to use school resources) loads of interested students but I can't find a single staffer. All the computer science professors talk about how important cybersecurity is but they don't want anything to do with it.
I'm so desperate I'm about to reach out to... information systems professors from the college of business2 -
Hey guys, perhaps some of you might be able to help me out.
My current task in my job is to implement an OAuth2 client in Android. I know there are a lot of out-of-the-box solutions for like Twitter, Facebook, Google etc. but I need to make it work with a generic OAuth2 server.
So I tried several frameworks for Android like AppAuth, Scribejava, etc. and most of them are buggy/outdated or aren't working with the Android version I have to use (API 24, Nougat).
I already asked for help in the android-dev IRC channel, but to no avail. Also looked up dozens of repositories on Github.
I'm rather desperate right now, because I'm running out of time :(
Any help/pointers are appreciated!
Thanks!1 -

Death penalty is bad, and here’s why:
- It’s decided and implemented by humans. Thus, sooner or later, an innocent person will be executed. It happened before. To me, one innocent life is worth more than all the money the government saves by executing people rather than feeding/maintaining them indefinitely.
- Solitary confinement for life without parole is a way better of a deterrent for soon-to-be death row inmates. I heard that El Chapo began to mutilate his body as a desperate suicide attempt in ADX Florence, and it scared the hell out of me.
- Botched execution is very painful. Government should not inflict physical pain as a punishment on unarmed people, period.9 -

You have an array of objects with a startIndex and endIndex representing their position in a string & you want to end up with a nested structure to represent their relation in the string (i.e., A is from 1 to 10, B from 3 to 5, C from 4 to 5, D from 7 to 9). How would you do it?
Input array looks like: https://gist.github.com/AmyShackles...
Desired output looks like: https://gist.github.com/AmyShackles...
(Though what I really have to start with is an object whose keys are the start index and whose values are values of each element in the above input array, so if you can think of a way to morph it without needing to turn it into an array first that’d also be cool)
Figured I’ve been stuck on this part of my side project for long enough that I really should just make a desperate cry for help. ❤️question please help with a little help from my friends man i hate data structures regex parser still killing me4 -

Allright, to settle a debate what is the more incorrect way of getting the last elememt of a std::vector?
Is it this:
auto i = myVec.at(myVec.begin() + myVec.size() - 1);
or:
auto i = *(&myVec.at(0) + (myVec.size() - 1));
I think the second method is better(worse) because it has more brackets and only works on Implementations where the vector's data is laid out concurrently (that is in the c++11 spec, but I've seen some shit)
My friend argues for the first method because it takes more time. (If IO is not a bottleneck)1 -

I was devastated after losing $3,000 to a fake job offer. I had been job hunting for months and thought I’d found the perfect opportunity — a software engineering role with a reputable company. The offer seemed legitimate with professional communication and a high salary. But then the employer asked for an upfront payment for background checks, training, and processing fees. Desperate, I transferred the money without hesitation. After that, the employer vanished, and I realized I had been scammed.
I turned to *FUNDS RETRIEVER ENGINEER*, a company specializing in helping scam victims. They quickly traced the fraudulent payment and gathered evidence. Their team kept me updated throughout the process, which eased my stress. Thanks to their efforts, they were able to recover $2,500 from the scammer. As a resident of California who endured the catastrophic repercussions of the recent wildfires, I was already grappling with the emotional and financial toll of losing my home and cherished belongings. The destruction left me feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed, struggling to find a pathway to rebuild my life. Amidst this turmoil, I received a text message that appeared to be a beacon of hope. It offered a "fire recovery grant" in cryptocurrency, specifically $60,000 in USDC, claiming that I could access funds to facilitate my recovery. On Facebook, I joined a crypto investment group called Capitalix FX. The manager annually selects the top 30 most active investors to reward with trading packages, including a multi-investor option promising 500% returns. Last year, I was selected despite being only 6 months in. Excited by the opportunity, I gathered funds and made a deposit, as per the company’s terms. A week later, the company website shut down. When I contacted the group admin, she ignored me and eventually removed me after I threatened to report her. Desperate, I sought help from a recovery company to save my family, as we had lost everything.

Many first-time Bitcoin investors find themselves falling victim to scams and fraudulent schemes. HOW TO HIRE A CRYPTO RECOVERY EXPET YOU CAN TRUST/ HIRE TRUST GEEKS HACK EXPERT
To be honest, not all recovery agents are legitimate. After several attempts to reach out to different recovery agents, I found many scams. It became a frustrating experience, as each one seemed more interested in my money than actually helping me recover my losses. At one point, I had nearly given up hope of getting my funds back, until someone from my church recommended Trust Geeks Hack Expert. Intrigued and desperate, I decided to reach out to them. They took the time to listen to my story and understood the urgency of my situation. They assured me that they would do everything in their power to help recover my lost funds. These companies initially lured me in with promises of high returns, claiming to be licensed and operating legally. They had all the necessary paperwork and websites, which made them appear legitimate. I invested my money, expecting great returns, but instead, I ended up losing everything. After some time, I couldn’t get in touch with anyone from these platforms, and it became apparent that I had been scammed. At this point, I was desperate and didn’t know where to turn. It can be quite difficult to navigate the aftermath of a large financial loss. My name is Kai Jackson, and I was recently put in a difficult situation when my girlfriend tried to access my bitcoin wallet without authorization. She even tried to delete the wallet and change the PIN in a desperate attempt to lock me out. Luckily, I had predicted her moves and had changed the PIN in time to prevent her from taking the $510,000 worth of Bitcoin assets that were kept inside. I was so scared and exposed that I went to WIZARD JAMES RECOVERY, a friend's recommendation, for help. From the beginning, their group offered outstanding assistance and confidence. They listened to my narrative with sympathetic ears and promised me that they have the know-how to get my money back. The experts at WIZARD JAMES RECOVERY started a thorough investigation and painstakingly tracked down the attempt at unauthorised entry and the wallet's subsequent erasure. They were desperate to recover what was properly mine, and their technological prowess was on display as they dug deep into the intricacies of digital transactions. In just a few weeks, they recovered the complete wallet in an amazing feat of expertise and perseverance. There was an unbelievable wave of relief and gratitude that passed over me.
Furthermore, WIZARD JAMES RECOVERY gave me priceless advice on bolstering my digital assets' security to stave off future intrusions. Their steadfast dedication to their work and their kind assistance were sorely needed during this difficult period. What should have been a disastrous event was turned into a story of resiliency and healing by them. I highly recommend their services to anyone facing comparable difficulties. They are the real protectors of online safety, able to guide you through difficulties and help you come out stronger on the other side.

To be honest, I assumed that creating a resume would be simple. I mean, how difficult could it be to talk about myself? False. With no organisation, no keywords, and just a list of occupations and a pathetic effort at a personal statement, my "two-page masterpiece" appeared more like a dull college essay. All the jobs I applied for? Crickets.
“Why don’t you just get help from professional CV writers in Sligo?”
someone in my networking group then remarked. I was desperate but cynical. BEST decision ever. They rewrote my resume in addition to fixing it. Finally, it seemed like someone any employer would want to hire—me with a clear layout and strong wording.
Stop sending out the same old resume if you're in Ireland. Really. Seek assistance from actual professionals it will alter everything.5 -
