Shared screen with a client over Skype. Showed them in Postman that their API wasn't working as expected. It was expecting a json. Instead it was giving error code 400 instead of 200.
"Error: No error. All OK"
I'll never forget the words of the client:
"Don't use all this fancy software, you don't know how to call APIs, open Internet Explorer or chrome and paste it in the bar. You'll see All OK, means all is okay."
*insert you dense mf meme here*20
my all-time favorite xkcd comic. Many will know it already, but i think it's a nice start into devrant community and maybe a few will laughing as hard as i did when i've seen it the first time :)8
Got a great boss!!;
Me: Hey, do we have a corporate GitHub account?
Boss: *excitedly* do we need it? We'll get it!
Me: uhh, yeah, we need it 😉
Don't care he doesn't know what it is, got his trust to get all the right tools!13
Guy: you said you were a software developer right?
Guy: Do you know how to reset my phone?
Me: You do know a reset will wipe out all contacts.
Me: What phone do you have?
Me: (looks it up on google and shows him it)
Guy: is that a special app?
Me: its google
I swear this was tuesday night and i was the one out of us that was drinking11
Back in 2011 when I was 14, I created a cmd shortcut on all pc in my school's computer lab. Replaced the icon and renamed it to Internet Explorer. Deleted the original IE shortcut and a week later the lab got closed because they all the computers got infected with a "virus"
i know im lame kill me7
YOUTUBE HAS A DARK THEME?
How long has this been going on and why didn't I know about it? In all cases, I just turned it on and it seems like the start of a good day.15
You know what's fucking scary?
If you change a big block of code and it compiles, all tests are passed and you don't even get a warning.
Just wasted 20 Minutes because I tried to look for a mistake6
I know pretty much everyone here understands the importance of net neutrality, but here’s a nice chart you can share with all your non tech friends explaining the importance of it in terms they understand25
I don't even know if this should be a rant or a good thing, but here it goes:
my boss smokes (legal) weed in the office, under the AC, so the smoke goes up and it spreads all over the place => we all get a bit stoned8
update for all that care:
I have successfully gotten android studio to run on a chromebook.
don't ask how.
don't ask why.
don't even ask.
but know. it's working, and it was worth it.19
Please don't put this on your resume and definitely don't list a language at 50% just because you used it once for a project.
We both know you're over exaggerating and all you'll do is waste my time.13
Yes yes yes ... We all know HTML is not a programming language. Can everybody please stop leaving that as a comment in every single damn rant in this app?!?!?!
Seriously, get over it... I wonder where you would all be of there was no HTML.
It's funny how every one says Google respects your privacy.
I remember a few months ago, one of my manuscripts was removed by Google because it "violated the terms and services."
First of all, it's just a psychological crime thriller about murder. I read the terms and services and it said nothing about murder, so I didn't violate anything.
Second of all, assuming they removed it for the reason it was all bloody and about murder, how would they know that? Did they start snooping and read my manuscript?
Fortunately, it was recovered the next day, but if Google cares so much about your privacy, why would they read my document?28
I was talking in class. Teacher saw me. She asked me to explain the topic she was going to explain. It was Network Security. I started explaining how we can prevent tracking of our online activities by using VPN and all.
Teacher (to class): Do you all know about VPN?
Whole Class: No.
Teacher (to me): They don't know about VPN. Now, how will you explain?
Me: I won't.
Literature classmate saw my OS and asked me what it was. i told him it was Debian, he then told me that looks "Hacker" (i cringed all the way into orbit.)
He tried to install debian so he can pretend to know shit. And ended up partitioning his entire hard drive! Hahaha18
I know python , JS, java etc. Some might know php, some others might swift and so on.. but the only language understood by everyone all over the globe is this 😂(wait for it to load, and you will believe what I'm saying :P )10
everyone in class was so silent when suddenly one guy pops up and says:
" 'TROJAN' VIRUS? I got it! you know? the trojan horse and shit?"
we all laughed
not because of him just realizing it now
but because we all slapped our faces at the same time, it was kinda funny.
Noob: I hate $foo language! It sucks!
Me: Have you used the language before?
Noob: no because it sucks!
Me: have you tried using it?
Noob: no because it sucks!
Me: so how do you know it sucks?
Noob: because all my friends that use $baaa says it sucks.
Me: ........ I see your point... sheep 🐑8
Do you know that feel when some relatives ask you why you are "gaming" all the time, while in reality you just released a new version of a library you wrote and wanted to get it right?7
For all those who hard coded 2017 in their code don't forget to update it 😋
PS. I actually know people who have6
The fact you’re older doesn’t give you the right to call other people’s 8-months’ engineering effort “shit work”, especially if you didn’t even see the code...
Your tech lead - me :)4
i hate the phrase "It's working but I don't know why". If you don't know how it works, it means it doesn't work at all and will fuck you up soon.6
My life... Back to studying (haven't made it far through the book. Trying not to pretend I know it all)30
"Can you do this?"
Sure, give me the information I need...
"We don't have all of it yet"
So I can't do it then
"Well when can you do it"
When you get the information
"Do you need *all* of it"
Well, it's either I do half a job and waste my time, or get it all done in one shot
"The client wants it tomorrow"
When will we have the information?
"We don't know"
Well they aren't having it tomorrow then, are they...
Sales people... don't care *how* things work, as long as they get a tick against their name to show they've sold something...3
Hi all. I know it's been a while. I've forgotten what days off are. However, knowing you all are here and understand the terror of horrendous code gives me comfort while dealing with statements like "the problem isn't with our code, we haven't touched it in 14 years" while discussing database upgrades (3, in fact).8
Did you know..
There is an Easter egg in the Unix man command, if you call it at exactly 30 mins over midnight.
Then it prints "gimme gimme gimme"; (all night long)..8
Dear friends and family, just because I'm a devloper does not mean I know how to fix all of your IT issues. I am not IT.8
Just curious, how is it like to work as a developer. I mean, as a profession and not a hobby or freelancing.
From devRant, so far I know that you work in an office, the managers and bosses are assholes, and people always write unmanageable and undocumented code.
What else is it like? Do you get to work alone or do you have to work with people? Do you stay there all day long?
I know its still going to be a while for me, but I want to know how it will be like.26
OMG! I fucking hate it when people who have no idea about technology whatsoever have a conversation about some 'technical stuff' and I've got to listen to trash like:
A: "It's a wonder that all of this stuff actually works!"
B: "Yeah, I heard that it all connects over some kind of WAVES or something like that..."
FFS! I know you can't know everything, but please for the love of god ... just don't!
- Currently sitting on the train and cringing like a madman -13
Company that has tech != Tech company.
The amount of "Hey fellow programmers" I get from marketers of all people is cringeworthy. No amount of blockchain in your sentences will magically convince me you know anything about it.
I fucking hate the web guy.
He says - make a pop-up of the raw text you're receiving (in the app) so that I can test it easily while I fix it.
I did it.
Now he laughs and says - I think you searched for it and simply copied from wrong example. All you had to do was handle the text and parse it and display it blablabla instead of simply popping up the raw text.
Thank you I flipping KNOW all of that, you stuck up obnoxious frog. I did it that way initially and uploaded it coz you SAID so! Why do you ALWAYS have to talk like I know nothing!?5
I could’ve cleaned it up but we all know desks aren’t naturally as clean as people make them for these types of photos...3
What drives me nuts is all the frameworks: Think of a word, add .js, search it up... it's theeeeere.
I know I'm not the only one who fucking hate JS, and I don't think there are many people who genuinely love it. Sorry I just wanted to rant and it's 5 a.m.9
It's just sick how managers boast about how their programmers aren't getting sleep enough/at all due to nonstop coding.
That's not actually something to be proud of, CAUSE IT SHOWS HOW INEFFICIENT YOU ARE AT, I don't know... MANAGING?4
FUCK THE EU!
Ok I said it, what? Someone had too.
Can we all move on now?
Ps: if you made it this far, be sure to ++ for your angers and frustrations over the current articles we all know and hate.5
To the people talking about boats on the other side of the cubical wall, FUCK YOU! YOU HAVE BEEN TALKING FOR 45 MINUTES! DO YOU WORK? I HOPE YOUR BOATS ALL GET RUST. I worked 12 hours on Sunday, got 4 hours of sleep, pulling a full day, then depending on how much work I get done work all night again. RESPECT MY QUIET ZONE!!! Uncouth peasants!14
Some people say they use dark themes because it looks cool, but we all know it's for when you're up late programming and don't want your eyes shot to pieces.11
Support: Do the thing.
Me: I know, but how?
Support: Read the docs.
Me: All it says is "do the thing". But it doesn't state how.
Support: So, do the thing.1
You know how cities hang all sorts of decorations wherever possible before Christmas? Well, it looks like people of Kekava, Latvia, are very big fans of Kotlin and find it's logo to be festive!
Good for them!9
I work with junior developers, guiding them and teaching them on a daily basis.. my biggest pet peeve?
When they finish typing code and without testing it ask: "Is this right?"
HOW THE FUCK DO I KNOW? Seriously! I don't know what all your specs are, maybe try running it before asking??
Boss not fan of tests at all.
"Hey I'm doing all of tests" - boss to me.
"Cool, are they automated? Or do you want me to implement'em?" - me to him
[long speech about why tests are irrelevant including "...once I tested, it is tested, we dont need to have automated tests."] *im teaching you because you dont know voice*
Please, help meeee5
Great error message. Now I know EXACTLY what to do in order to fix it. Thank you all over the place, Microsoft.3
That's it. That's all I have for my home server setup. I don't even know why we have that sticky red thing, but today it came handy. And now I can SSH anytime I want, it's never going get shutdown 😂2
Dev and side projects
What I finish all my projects !
Oh OK I didn't finish 1 or 2.
Omfg OK I get it I didn't finish about a half of them OK ? Are you happy to know the truth ?
You know how we all get frustrated with new clients who don't provide enough information or detailed background of what the last dev did or tried?
Careful what you wish for. Just took on a new client who has sent 3 separate Word docs, all organized and color coded and fully detailed with the website's life history. All 24 pages of it.
We are supposed to fix the checkout flow and organize the download directory. That's all.
6 hours later, the call is suspended because all users went home. We can't recreate the issue anymore, but don't know that we fixed it vs not having enough people to recreate it.3
You know what irks me is whenever people ask me how to do something without Googling it first.
Like ffs whenever I Google the same issue because I don't know the answer either, it's literally the first fucking result. Like damn bruh.
I don't mind helping people at all, but please at least try to be an adult and Google the fucking question first.16
My Friend: putt all the code into one huge file
Me: hey, there is an issue
Friend: go fix it by yourself
Me: Where is it
Friend: Don't know
There weren't even comments 😡2
My security knowledge is so bad. But I don't know where should I start.😖
My coworkers know about this, so I don't get involved on related topics.🤤
Last time I asked same question, someone gave me link, and it all about DIY welding metal tubes into a security door.🤦♂️
Any better suggestion?13
That awkward moment you go from being the developer of an online store, to being the customer of said online store, and pray the ordering system behind the scenes doesn't fall over due to a bug you haven't fixed yet 😅
Here's something I never thought I would do, I just returned this weeks pay check back to the company!6
Not learning data structures and algorithms. Not learning programming languages. Actually not learning anything to answer during a job interview.
I am more of a learn-while-you-do kind of guy. I never learn anything, instead just do it. Interviewers think I am useless because I know nothing. But I can get a job done, any kind of job done. I have no learning period, I can start working from first day in a all new language, in a all new IDE, in a all new OS.
I know nothing, and I learn nothing. I am a problem solver. You got a problem, I can solve it.6
So recently I started swiping on Tinder again, after some years of staying away from it. Now that's all fine, right?
But there's another dating platform that I used long long ago, Zoosk. I didn't even know that I had an account on it anymore, and they've never reminded me of it either. But guess what got in my mailbox this morning.. 32 singles that you'll definitely like!
Now how does Zoosk know that I'm on dating sites again.. maybe Tinder? 🤔
You know what, Tinder wanketeers? Fuck you. Sharing my personal data like that. Shame on you!!!5
Well that's indeed kinda funny
But I'd really like to know if it all had to do with Google Cloud Networking, because they had a failure of their systems in us-east1 for 25 hours and it fits the time in some way (https://status.cloud.google.com/inc...).2
All of my colleagues think that IT dept. know all the internet traffics.
Plot twist: we just have simple router without any log1
Hate it when people call themselves a Web Backend developer and all they know is POST and GET method.😡4
You know a good way to handle all of the issues with W10 force updating your system? Do it yourself FFS!
You know there are updates. Windows has been telling you ...
Pick a damn time, start the update and go get a coffee, lunch, take a dump or go home for the day.
It's *never* going to be the right time if you don't choose it. It will always be an inconvenience or you'll be "in the middle of something important" and then you'll get all pissy about it.
Custom: yeah yeah yeah I don't care about all that technical crap, all I want to know is if it comes with Google...
Me: *Slams head on desk repeatably*5
If you ask me, you're a bad developer if you don't know hardware. You have to know how it all works and fits together to write code for it.18
This compiles and works in C++:
5[arr] = 42;
cout << 5[arr] << endl;
I know why it works technically. Its just pointer math. But I have to ask "Why?" Of all that is unholy, WHY?!11
Ok so I'm releasing (in about two weeks) a massive project that my self and other talented people have been working on for about 2 years.
I feel like I want to puke all the time now. God I hope it is okay. 🤢
I'll let you all know what it is if all goes well so I'm not embarrassed if it does not
Wish me luck😐12
Spent a week developing features, spending this day removing those features. Gotta love know it all bosses.2
I really miss putting on some headphones and getting shit done while listening to some rock.
I like pair programming, but doing it all the time is starting to feel exhausting. I need some "me" time, ya know?2
So, you may know this already...But fuck CNET once again! Don't get me wrong, even if I loved the auto-playing video ads I would still be angry af. The site loads with a decent layout at first, but then in a second it changes and all I get is a pile of shit broken because of some <sarcasm>really great</sarcasm> CSS.
P.S. Yeah, I know it's probably my ad blocker killing something that is vital for the site to keep it's shape, but I don't care about that at all. I'll never give it up. (Or let it down, for that matter)9
Today I started coding an encryption algorithm I'm calling Aepples (apples)!! I'll let all of you know how it goes!6
My coworker asked where his toolbar was.
I said I removed it for him because... you all probably know why
He literally slapped me and yelled at me.
I know going onto his computer was wrong but Jesus Christ no need to fucking slap me11
"Wait, we're logging all web traffic now?"
Me: You're the security engineer, you asked him to do it!
"I know but I didn't think he would actually do it!"
I don't know why, but each time I have the chance to create a caching system with redis to e.g. cache requests to APIs I get all excited about it.5
I just want a coffee machine that is smart enough to know when I need coffee and then serves it on my desk.
(Also this coffee machine should automatically kill all annoying client's)5
"I'm not very smart with computers"
Why do people say that? Obviously you may not know 100% of what you can do with a computer, but NO ONE does! I get that some people know slightly more than others, but it all comes down to how much time you put into learning it!
And how do you even respond to that? "I know, I'm dumb." You can't ignore it or affirm it, you just have to awkwardly acknowledge and then change the subject. Ugh...4
I think we all know who the Atlas really is.
I've had this feeling ever since I've started my IT career.11
How to tell this person nicely, to provide meaningful commit messages?
I know it took me probably for ever to learn it myself, and not all of them are meaningful, but come on ...8
I think I know now where "Pet project" got its name from: 1) Most of us would rather play with it all day instead of going to work. 2) As it grow bigger, eventually you'll have to shed out a couple bucks for it, and.. 3) Your PM would be FURIOUS if he caught you playing with it at the office.1
I know we have a lot of talented people here. Piece of advice, what ever you build, believe in it. See it through. No matter how good of an idea incompleteness won't get you anywhere.
After all every other day we all analyze different successful products and say "huh... that's nothing. Even we can do that".
Well thats the difference "We" can do that, they DID it.
See your ideas through. Stay motivated =)1
For all those who post pictures of their screen taken with phone camera (and we all know how crappy that usually looks), there is something called Snipping Tool! As simple as it gets.. Use it ✂😉5
The Return of Mr. Gitmaster:
So there is this colleague I already ranted about several times. After my previous team lead had confronted him about not doing much work, there was some irritation because he showed not up at work, but it turned out the external training he did was just a week earlier. Then he was ill a week, another week vacation so we didn't see him much. Not that his pre- or absence makes much difference to our repo: When his and my team lead looked at his commits of the past three months they found like the one copy-pasted HTML-form that wouldn't even show.
Fast forward to now, where we have a new team lead and we were going to lunch with Mr. gitmaster. So we got some more hero stories from the great work he was doing in the previous company. How he was graphically monitoring the heap fragmentation that stupid glibc was causing to their search engine, and how much better it became with tcmalloc.
I still don't understand how he bridges that cognitive dissonance from all the superior tech knowledge he displays to not actually writing any code at all. Not that I would not have experienced some states of feeling low, in paralysis unable to write a single line of code... but he seems so full of confidence, always commenting how trivial and easy all these tasks would be, as if it's all so lightyears below his abilities. Maybe he should just become a manager - but not mine.
You know something is ABSOLUTELY NOT RIGHT when you see this code.
Even more when you notice the parameter is not being used at all!
Holy crap, it is a web api deployed in production. Imagine it being called!4
Not sure if this is necessarily a prank, but I was working on a team that was split in 2. We had a group of senior devs in one country, and junior devs in another (god only knows why, and yes I complained about this a lot).
The "lead" of the juniors was very stubborn and refused to adhere to the official standards, as his way was better.
I was working on an app with him, I was fed up with how badly the app was working, how hard it was to find files etc. So I waited for him to be off on holidays and pulled some extra hours to completely re-do the folder structure, rip out his persistence layer and a few other things.
When he came back he lost his shit and complained to the architect. The architect (also fed up with his shit) told him that we don't have the time to invest in reverting back everything, and loosing all the new features I added on top, especially since the app is now adhering to standards.
Never felt such satisfaction in my life.
You know that feeling when you're coding late at night and you get an error that you just can't parse with your tired brain, and go FUCK IT ALL, FUCK IT ALL
I'm having that feeling right about now...6
Well, I know you guys are tired of all the Hacktoberfest rants but I got mine this morning and I'm excited! Guess you gotta deal with it 😂😂😅4
How the actual fuck are we expected to know this many languages / frameworks / libraries for a web dev interview? This shit is RIDICULOUS. No one can honestly say they're half proficient at any of this stuff if they have to know ALL of it. Is this the only way to get a job these days? This sucks balls!7
First thing, I love my colleague. I know him for 15 years and I'm under 30. But I freaking hate when he picks his nose FOR ALL THE DAY LONG and uses shared mouses and keyboards, leaving them unable to use. I have to clean all that mess and no matter what we say he still do it. :(5
One of our politicians at the late-night-show
Q: who wrote La Traviata? Giuseppe or Verdi?
A: ummm.. Ammm.. Well.. *confused af*
Q: so do you know it or not?
A: I know it! I know. I know but I won't tell you. *in all the seriousness*
somehow reminds me of IT guys who pretend to know everything just to look cool :)4
All junior php developers must know about register_shutdown() function before going into developement ... it will save massive amount of debugging time ..4
You know your idea was shit when....
You see it on devrant as the subject of someone's all caps, swear word filled rant...1
Soooooooooooooooo first 5.1 commits made it trough.
You know what that means !
Yup gotta compile them all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!2
I use to have a comic online. It wasn't popular or profitable, but I loved every minute of working on it, so it remains my favorite project of all time.
I know that barely qualifies as a 'dev' project, but... it's what was in my heart so shut up THERE'S SOMETHING IN MY EYE3
Just got the Oreo 8.0 update for my OnePlus 5T. Yay!
But it broke something, so now I can't debug my app with Xamarin... 😐
Luckily there's already a bugreport on their bugzilla! It seems like it's been fixed. Just need to update Visual Studio. Guess I'm lucky after all. 😁
The problem is still there... 😡
Don't know what to do now... 😕5
Ignore the code I know it's really basic but I didn't have my flash drive that has all my projects on it so enjoy the meme8
When you know the whole week's weather forecast w/o even looking at it, because your neighbours above you are aged people and when they read it out *loud* you can hear it all sooo clearly...
Boy do I want my own house....6
Either help me be more reasonable because I know I'm crazy, or send money/pc parts lol
I just want my computer to do all the things so if i feel like doing something, I don't need to worry that it can't handle it. (And I know people are going to tell me to use Linux, I will. But i want windows as a backup)36
I am right and you're wrong.
Aka: Living in a yin / yang (black n white) bubble.
If you're unable to adapt because the only perspective that matters is your own small little universe, then you shouldn't be a dev.
As a dev, you'll have to accept that you cannot know it all. There will be smarter people and there will be things that you won't understand.
It's okay to be wrong. It's okay to not know it all.5
Got convinced to work with a boss who seem to know it all in tech.
I honestly thought he knew tech, to code at least.
And then one day he referred to Java as the same as JavaSrcipt.
My Grandma: Go with your aunt to help her buy a refrigerator.
Me: But I don't know anything about refrigerator
My Grandma: But you spend all your time on computer, and it is just technology
Me: But its not the same thing at all
My Grandma: And I thought you were smart
How often do you all just learn a programming language just because you think it looks funky/cool
I certainly do very often, expect some Conjure soon, Idk what it's used for, why it's used and whatever else I have to know but it looks kinda weird and I love it4
Closing a bug with "Let me know if it's still happening for you" when it's been three years since the bug was filed and you haven't looked at it at all since then be all like...
"Listen to your client, take into consideration all of their input, weigh the options, study the details, know the target audience, and then, if necessary, ignore all of it and design what you think will work best." - Von R. Glitschka3
That one dude that claimed to know it all but when asked any questions he didn't know shit.
I think we've all seen a dude like this.
My biggest dev ambition? "Outliving" the pointy-hair bosses, monday morning quarterbacks, and the know-it-alls-and-do-nothings.
So far, I am seeing my ambitions fulfilled. The last know-it-all-do-nothing dev was fired a couple of months ago and its been really nice around here.
Why do all developers that seem to know their stuff drinks, smokes or both? Is it some sort of a trade secret?30
In horror movies. Characters do things that they them-self know it could kill them. Like getting in basement.
As a developer we all know to never deploy code on Friday. Here we are taking the wrong turn.2
Although it's still freezing here (0C) finally some nice sunlight... so finally took a moment to take it all in.
Even with all the "problems" and stress I've been feeling the last few weeks, just looking around now, my only thought is "You know what? Life ain't so bad..."5
How to NOT handle dates!
Do not put the date to "mdy" format, today would be 050217.
Working on an intranet for some multi-billion corporation, and was wondering why events from last year were showing.
Last year's events were 28th of October, 2016, and was showing as upcoming events :)
Checked the code, and saw this. Quick fix, turned dates to UNIX timestamp, and it worked.2
Am I the only one who doesn't know where foo bar came from? I see it all the time but have no clue :/3
I know people have mixed feelings about Uncle Bob and I really never followed the guy at all, but back in college I found his book Clean Code on a shelf and read it cover to cover. A lot of it really stuck with me. In fact, I might dig it up again now that I'm thinking about it.3
I know there is websites that guide you through upcoming gdpr changes*
I feel I haven't been quite updating myself enough on things like that, so I often miss out a part, whenever I do have to add it myself, but finding it all feels like an endless maze
Serious question: why all the hate on PHP?
Just really curious, what have i been missing?14
So, I'm 100% sure that in a year I'll look back at today and ask why I thought it was a good idea to implement a feature this way.
Looks good to me today, that's all I know. I'm done ✅
Yo i know this shit is discussed way too often, but it kills me from the inside:
In that one coding class we get some source files where only the function bodies are missing (i know, sounds childish).. but it uses this style
I fuCKING HATE THIS GODDAMN RETURN THERE WHAT THE HELL WHO FINDS THIS BULLSHIT AESTHETIC ALL SPACEY SO YOU SCROLL YOUR ASS OFF WHEN FILES GET LONGER THAN 2 FUNCTIONS?😔7
How would you all suggest preparing for technical interviews? What has worked for you? What hasn't? I know it varies by person and company but I'd love to hear your experiences!2
Company asked me to write a small tool as a preliminary step in the hiring process.
The thing took me like 5 hours to do and it worked fine.
2 weeks later I get an automated email saying my job application was rejected.
Like wtf they basically robbed me of an evening of work and won't even let me know why it wasn't good enough. They could be using the tool for all I know.3
Me: Can you write the exact code one more time but in C language this time, so we can see it?
Other: But why, what's the problem?
Me: I don't know, maybe is garbage collector which collected all your code because IT LOOKS LIKE TRASHHHHH :@:@:@:@2
There is a colleague of mine who is loud, arrogant and thinks he knows it all. Except when I worked closely with him turned out he doesn't know shit. And he has been in the industry for over a decade! Why the fuck was he hired, I don't know..
We all know that scumbag test that sporadically decides to fail. Simply running it again makes it pass.1
This year I'm remaking my chatbot, a new improved chatbot.
I mean it's not new. But it's something I've always wanted to do personally since the advent of my original Chatbot (poorly written in batch).
If you know me at all, then you know that the actual reason for me getting into programming was because I made my own chatbot using windows batch (I was 14 and didn't know a lick about programming or available programming languages...)
Anyways, I'm wanting to dive back to my roots and build something from the ground up, but this time build it with all the knowledge I've accumulated since I've designed my first program.2
I'm writing a book that teaches everything I have learned in the past 20 years about writing small niche software and selling it.
Need some help from my fellow DevRanters.
Anyone who comments here with something constructive gets a free copy when it's done.
When I say:
"Why don't you just write your own software and sell it to end users"
What is the first thing that pops into your head?
Is it "I don't know how to advertise"
"that's a pipe dream"
"I tried starting my own business, but _______"
"I am doing that, i have this side project "
(how long have you spent on that side project?)
I need to know all your concerns questions fears, skepticism etc around the idea of writing your OWN software.
After 20 years I have like, so much knowledge, but it's sometimes hard to get it all out, UNLESS someone has a question or concern, then, out it comes.
So, I'm going to (hopefully) collect all the questions here ... and answer them, and it'll help me out a lot to extract this knowledge.
A lot of stuff I do without even thinking and realizing all the years it took to even know that.
What would you like to know the most?
You have the skills, you have the know how, you can probably see it in your head, so what's stopping you from making the leap?36
Had to cancel the pavilion reservation for a local park today... Had reserved it for my son's 6th birthday party. This is what made it finally all hit me. I'm not doing ok today.
Try to be excellent to all those you talk to, even users. You never know how they're doing at the moment.3
it kills when people say dual boot Linux with Windows. I know how painful it is. as people who like to install Linux just pray why doesn't Linux supports it all. because all they want to do is use Linux full time. 😑😖😭8
All I know is that I suck at calculus but I write good code.
If I would have to decide, early on I wrote random stuff 'til it worked.
Then I attempted to comprehend what I just did and started reading books.
That's probably when I first understood what I was doing.6
Baby all I want for Christmas is Uuuuuuuuu-I design that made sense while being cute.
Late I know. But I just thought of it.1
New macbook pro has no usb ports , that's apple way of saying "fuck all developers" . That is such a dick move , also the shitty butterfly keyboard i don't know if any developer will like it , any thoughts?7
The feeling of finally understanding and feeling you have learned something new.
To all those still stuggling with something they don't understand... Keep on going and let it take some time, you will solve it, I know it!💪🏻1
Calling All Developers!
This is very very random, but I am taking an IT Careers class for my software Development degree. As my last assignment, I need to interview a software developer. I don't know any personally and we were told we can reach out to people online who have had lots of experience. I don't know if this is too weird, but I need an interviewee just to answer about 20 questions. I'm so stuck and don't know where to go!6
That time when I wowed all my colleagues with C++-code that executed over 2.5x faster than theirs, without changing one line of code.
I guess they didn't know what -O2 does (or that it exists, for that matter).7
I go to the reddit programmers pages, here, the holy stackoverflow and github and it seems like everyone has 2 or 3 languages they know and love... Then i look at job applications and those fuckees want you to know several fluently... :/ ready to uninstall all IDEs
Don't you just love it when a department buys a software for the company without consulting IT and Data Management departments? You know to discuss integration, flexibility, compatibility and all that?
Don't you love it even more when the users of this new software then complain about the different tools that have to learn and the workflow being completely scattered?
But hey, they work in administration, so I'm sure they know what they are doing. ⚡⚡⚡4
Asus does not know how to implement a button that is also a fingerprint scanner,my phone keeps closing all apps cuz my fingers are sweaty(the button isnt actually clickable it just senses...My sweat smh)4
I can follow and am fine with the Vue documentation. I go crazy when I read online tutorials. I don't know webpack. I don't know ES6. I don't know nodejs. Arrghhh.
It is like all of a sudden I'm thrown into an English speaking courtroom as a lawyer or into a bunch of Brits.
A guy I work with on some projects is a know it all. when I ask him to get something done he drags his feet on it and instead keeps telling me about the "cool" things he did5
Maybe it's just cause I fucking hate the elitism in the engineering college and every engineer I've met, but why do devs want to be called engineers? I'm a programmer, a developer, a coder, fucking anything rather than an engineer.
I associate that word with know-nothing "book-smart" fuckwads who think they're better than everyone, even someone doing the same thing without their useless degree.7
"You can be watching TV and see Coca-Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke, and just think, you can drink Coke, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the Cokes are the same and all the Cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it." - Andy Warhol2
So, in a school project we use BaseCamp for project management.
When discussing about using it I was about to say that I know the guy who built it - but then I remembered he was just in the devRant podcast and I actually don't know him at all!1
Rip facebook apps.
Today at first it kicked me out of all my sessions, then I couldn't send pics in the messenger, then I couldn't accept new members for a group, now I can't even comment.
I wish I could know know who fucked up what :D4
What kind of facts should every person know? I mean in todays modern world some ppl live so deep with heads up their asses that they dont even know how many continents in the world there are.
And sadly it makes sense, who needs all that data in their head when the info is one google search away?
I myself cant retain facts of real world at all. Recently went to some quiz competition and felt stupid af.
On the other hand all these ppl who know a lot about world usually have shit retail jobs. So is knowing more facts than white collar professional some weird mental flex?17
Enterprise that "doesn't have training budget".
Meeting #1: We need to cut the budget and can't guarantee anyone will still have their job next fiscal.
Meeting #2: Hey you all need to read this book. It's mandatory and we will have a follow up meeting to talk about it.
All contractors: okay, but just so you know reading this book is billable and is subject to overtime pay.
Director:👍👍Here you go 💰💰💰
All of the FTEs that are salaried: 😶2
1. To get all the wishes from everyone else
2. Unlimited wishes
3. Clients that know what they want and how to explain it.
Amazing how a giant cloud service like AWS can go down. It feels like the whole cloud is so fragile. All of a sudden it will rain and everything we know of will vanish.2
Does anyone know if android 8.0.0 had a Bluetooth bug at all?
My pebble would just not stay connected to my phone (they are both brand new at that point) and when they did randomly connect it was for literally a second.
Now with 8.1 it hasn't disconnected once... I'm so confused!38
I guess it would have been the school choice back then. Teachers were almost all really bad, going though a powerpoint at mad speed instead of making sure we got it, and the other students were elitists: you don't know how to code / use this framework? Why haven't you commit suicide yet?
This school was a big part of how I lost all confidence in myself, and how hard to build it back. And the major actor of my depression. Yay.
There are too many things to get started in I don't know what field to choose.
There are so many technologies listed on job descriptions and it feels like I need to know them all.
Most of them are a huge reach expecting a new grad to have experience with.
I once worked at a really messy project that is best described as one gigant big bug. The CEO asked me how long it would take to fix it. At that point nobody knew since the code was a mess and new directives came all the time. So I answered that I sincerely didn't know. He responded angered with "How couldn't you know. When I read a book I know exactly how long it takes."... I quit4
Can you do a security / privacy check for ProtonVPN? All I know is that it is Switzerland based and pretty much secure.9
I use console.log for debugging in JS, but I might try .alert as I feel that it could make me feel like a person tracking status of a rocket launch. You know, message appears saying "Stage 1 successfully completed. Ready to attempt connection to database. Good luck to you all." and if the program encounters an error it would say "It was a pleasure working with you all, gentlemen.", wait for 5 seconds and then crash.2
Thought I'd see what all you guys from across the pond are raving on about with Silicon Valley. It's not a tv show that anyone I know, including my dev colleagues, talk about. Suffice to say I'll definitely be recommending it to every geek I know.6
My dad was using notepad to edit some HTML for his website. I downloaded Visual Studio Code and he likes it SO MUCH MORE. (I wonder why....).
Kinda happy I could help him with it. He is pretty good at coding but just hasn't done it in a while (not his trade) so he doesn't know all the new tools and such.4
I HATE it when client does not know what he wants. Removed a functionality only to be added back again with all the ripples going through the code¡¡¡¡¡
ARGH¡¡¡¡¡¡ FUCK ME
Where's my exclamation mark u shitty SwiftKey keyboard¿¿¿¿1
Sometimes I feel I should switch to android from web even though I don't know anything about it but just feels that it's interesting morebthen web.
But then again I have those thoughts that jack of all and king of nothing is pretty hurtful in career building. Isn't it?5
"It's somewhat like Java but it's used for scripting purposes."
I swear to the Lord Almighty, I wish I could drive my palm through my face.2
Working 40 hours per week while doing freelancer stuff and now a fking masters degree due september this year. How do you guys manage it? I dont know if I could do it all... Fuck it3
It's like I know staying up all night is gonna kill me the next day, and I do it anyways... and now it's the next day. Fml 😫4
We all have that one colleague who asks for help with his code and when you try and talk about it, he acts like he's got everything figured out.
These guys are so frustrating,if you know it already why'd you call me in the middle of the night to fix an important bug.1
As we all know(or suppose) that Google is silently listening to us, is there any way to stop him without covering the microphone physically (I know it can be a suggestion)?
Like some trustable app to take the mic permissions so that Google will not be able to use that resource, or something else.16
You know what's worse than being stumped on a very precise development problem? Typing out all the keywords for the problem into a search engine, pressing F5 to "run" your search out of habit then needing to type it all out again when the page finishes reloading...
I'm at a hospital waiting and the tv is so loud so I thought I'd find a remote app to turn it down.
I found this app, one with no ads but look at all the damn permissions it needs....
What the hell,
Anyone know a good remote app that doesn't want to steal my identity?5
The more I learn frontend the more I like it. Imagine, actually becoming good at something makes you hate it less! I know, I know, I was shocked too.
Completely unrelated question:
if you have all the mods for the factors of a product, is it possible to derive the factors from the modulus?
(lol you know what this is about).
The product "fingerprinting" I talked about a while back is starting to allow me to find the modulus of factors, and I want to know what I can do with that if anything.3
Right after breaking my camera lens, my brother again broke my precious favorite mouse. I don't know what to do about it. After all, he is my brother.7
You can say you know a computer language to a decent level when you can in fact make useful programs with it.
- it manipulates the DOM, the DOM has Element, Nodes, TextNodes (all to be found on W3C documents with its own specs)
- useful functions are:
Also knowing that these return either HTMLElementCollection or NodeCollection because you have to iterate over it differently then
- == and ===
- dynamic typing
- avoid global variables
- nodes have parentNodes
- isNaN, undefined
- arguments don't have explicit types defined
Using this knowledge I built an antispam script for a particular server. It's good to know the model of a language, that it sits in your head and that you can use and understand the constructs when you want and how you want.1
what's your opinion on search engine marketeers? I think they're smurky and don't know how the internet works. I once had a 'SEO specialist' even telling me that my HTML wasn't correct because it didn't had the same markup as Google's documentation. For the record: it díd have all the microdata, but I used <ol> instead of <ul>. So yeah...1
I know I ranted about this before but...
Dumbass me thought "I know it's fucked up in the past but give it another chance". My google home decided to delete all of my alarms. It will not be getting another chance.
I woke up 3 hours later than expected on a normally smooth day and now I going to be late to class and I'm anything but calm.
I'm about ready to frisbee this shit out my window.
me, testing my software:
"ok, well it works for this case.. let me make a spreadsheet of all cases and test them one by one"
*doesn't create spreadsheet
*3 use cases later..
"Ah, you know what, this seems fine, I didn't change too much...............................
.... it should be ok"
you know what happens from here.
I don’t give a fuck about crypto currency, bitcoin and all the shit. I don’t even want to know how it works.
I’m an arrogant or dumb ??
my company believes microsoft dynamics crm is the solution to all enterprise problems and they have used crm to build all manner of stuff it wasn't meant for. now we have bugs when users perform the slightest tasks..when people who dont know shit make tech decisions it always goes down south.2
So I'm gonna be honest. I dont know git. I do plan on learning it but I'm waiting to learn how to use it. But I'm seeing all this stuff about it on here could someone explain what it is and its function?6
Someone is trying to get into my shit. Mail Accounts and my phone is receiving lots of. Spam calls and phishing messages...
We all get phishing shit but if it’s targeted it makes me feel awkward..
Little fucking bastards.. I think I even know who it is.. that useless piece of junk that got fired because of my honest feedback. Not many others know my current nr, emails etc..7
I spent the last 2 days, my father's birthday, and my birthday working on a bug for the game in developing for mobile. And I've done everything to try and fix it. Optimize the vertices, deleted assets not in use, organized all my assets into separate folders, and you know what. Fuck it. If "app not installed" I'm going to port it to PC.
is it just me or do people with a CS degree know way less than those who don't have a degree at all?6
System finally fully updated to all git packages as it was. Who would say it would take 3 hours to build llvm and gcc. Fuck i hate that package. Have a repo for it tho. And holy. GNOME 3.36 beta is here and i didnt even know. Fuck.2
You know you achieved some great dev and had a great idea when someone says "Yeah! I use it all the time look! It does everything for me"
Just wanted to share some very welcome appreciation!
Does anyone actually fucking know how certs and provisioning profiles work for large iOS teams without using the cancerous auto provision checkbox? Are we all just fucking it up all the time??3
Do you know why my mom likes me so much?
Because my mom asked me to heat up all the food. And I did it in O(1).2
Knowing SQL does not mean knowing all the existing technologies that uses SQL, motherfucker! Stop bragging around that you know Postgres, SQL Server, Oracle and shit.
IT is full of shit talkers and ego, NNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH10
/dev/null is like a black hole. You know it exists, but you cannot communicate with it. It has no output, only input. It swallows all data it can possibly get and nobody knows what it looks inside.4
The only difference between a beginner dev and a veteran dev is that the beginner is afraid to touch what he doesn't know, while the veteran embraces it.
Accept that you don't know all and will never know everything. Even so, learn something new everyday. Fight your ego when it tries to make you keep only what you know and reject everything else. Fight that bastard.
The world needs less "I know", and more "I wanna know". And remember, devs should be in the "I wanna know" team.
sudo rm - rf ego
sudo apt-get knowledge-upgrade
Why haven't I learned about js fetch before now. I've even used socket.io!
Fetch is amazing and I just built a function for using fetch with WordPress AJAX hooks. Yes I know it's WordPress and there's jQuery but all of my custom plugins use vanilla js as a little fuck you.
Oh yeah but ie doesn't support it at all2
So my friend has this idea. I don't know much about it, but from what I do know, it sounds pretty cool and I want to know what you all think.
Basically, it's an ide on the web, that has integration for multiple languages. He wants it to make codeling quicker and more accessible, and it would also allow the poor students who have to deal with shitty school chromebooks to code.7
FUCK LINUX part 932.5
Actually systemd, I know it's !== linux but it comes with linux so fuck them both, fuck ALL OF IT
*systemd service file*
StandardError=append:/myshit.err.log # erm... please?
yeah fuck this guy, let's all go to /var/log/messages29
Damn you OVH... You and your goddamn deals again... Now I ended up buying 2 domains for a project again. We all know I'll leave the domain in my cloudflare "keychain" without using it until it expires, because I'll find a fancier and more fun project 😅
I'm at 12 domains right now... I think I might be addicted 🤔
Btw, theres a sick deal going on over at OVH, .com is only 1,20€... Better get your project domain which you'll probably never use again now 😂4
Everyone should at least know a bit of coding, especially markup languages. God dam looking at good GUIs when all of yours look like youve made it in paint is amazing. 😂😂
me: you know you don't have to install all those common programs manually every time you get a new computer from IT, use Ninite.
college: oh I'll definitely check that out
*continues installing manually*1
Is it bad that even though I am doing computer science in college I still feel like I am missing a lot of knowledge? Like I’ll come out of college without knowing things that people with information technology will know or things that people with computer engineering will know.
I feel like all the job descriptions out there want me to be a combination of CS, IT and CE.4
I know this is weird to ask here but well i know you are all devs (well mostly devs) so whats scatter/gather exactly ? And what its used for ?
I heard it the first time today when debugging AMDGPU. I newer heard it in 9 years of programming. So i suppose its not so known.5
Does anyone know a semi decent printer available in Germany/Europe, for personal use that doesn't you a kidney and won't break after 7 months??
They're all so god damn awful it makes me want to pull my hair out.16
Fellow ML professionals and enthusiasts alike:
What do you all think about the Jetson Nano? Have you read or seen anything about it? Does it tickle your interest?
I am looking into it at the moment :D let me know what you all think!3
An AI that's sole purpose is to teach us what we don't know or something we missed by combing the Internet and putting all the information together. For example, it should be able to figure out the most efficient way to launch a rocket based on everything we know already5
goddammit my 3DS' shell is flaking hard
anyone know how i could just pull all the red plastic shit off it so i can paint it?4
Ever look at someone’s PR in your project repo, remember that you dislike that person because they think they know it all, give it a few seconds, and say fuck it and completely ignore the fact that they submitted that PR?
THEY WOULD OF THOUGHT.4
Look... As much as I want to believe this... We all know it won't happen...
The tie between iOS and the in house ARM chips is something you can't replicate with just a new piece of hardware...5
A pure r&d project! Get to try out all the cool new things. Yes I know it will probably be out of date by the end of my first day! One can only dream! 😉
!Rant Does anyone else find it sad that the more you know about coding ,the less it all feels like magic ? I remember times i often stumbled upon websites that felt so smart, as if they where magical. Now best i can say is that they are neatly programmed. But the magic disappeared once i understood the logic behind it all. Anyone else?3
Anyone know of OSSU? It seems cool, but I don't know anyone that has any experience with it. Would be doing it part time to fill all the gaps of my self learning journey5
As a developer you're expected to perform all sorts of tasks that don't necessarily involve any coding or development at all. "A web form in Drupal? Uhm, it's got something to do with the web, right? Yeah, let's dump it on 'IT'."
So now I've been given this most frustrating task to use some form engine in Drupal. I have no access to the PHP code itself, and I don't even know what this form engine is called. All I know it's the crappiest of crap. The more I use it the more I hate it.
When you think you finally know a programming language really well but then you start a project and want to do it all on your own but you dont even know what to do... so basically I'm dependant on tutorials and Google.. until I am good enough to do it on my own..
When you get tickets assigned to you, does it have all the requirements & acceptance criteria? I don't, and it's seriously difficult to know when you've finished a piece for work3
What's your thoughts on the newly released .app tld? Is it going to be the new .io?
It also seems like Google provides TLS certificates for free to all .app domains. I know there's let's encrypt but I still think that this is great. Google is really pushing a more "Secure" internet.
I honestly feel like I don't know what I'm doing. Actually, I don't know what I'm doing. From when I used to code to now being a solutions architect. I still Google a lot of things, I forget the stuff I've learnt/know. I feel like there's something that keeps on grabbing all the information I try to store in my brain and chucking it out.7
Okay i need help
I am about to buy an mid 2012 MacBook pro with an ssd. I wish to place the ssd in the main bay and the stock hdd in the optical. All i want to know is that will it work, has anyone done it??2
I have this system that receives an image on Base64 or the URL (in that case the system makes an HTTP request and saves re response to disk). It works beautiful when I run the tests, it doesn't work at all in production (all the resulting files are corrupted). I don't know how to start to debug it so I'm going to bed and let my future self to resolve the issue.4
An undefined ArrayList coupled with NullPointerExceptions because of it really know how to raise your blood pressure up.
Spent almost 1 hour trying to figure out why and all I needed to do was look a couple lines above.
But I guess that's what 4am development is all about
So everyone I know that has an iPhone is always mad at it because it randomly freezes or it is slow. I've yet to get my Moto G to freeze or to lag at all. Gotta love almost stock Android experience.2
Ok, I'm fed up with this, just read something about android constantly monitoring your phone's location, now it's time to shut this up.
Would you please be so kind and share information on which alternative "privacy-first" OS I could use and how to flash my device? For all I know, it runs a custom HTC modified OS. I'm quite unfamiliar with all those things gravitating Android. Heard about Cyanogen mod but that's about it.
What about compatibility with apps downloaded through the play store? (thinking about Threema) I would also need compatibility with WhatsApp (yeah, sucks, I know, but hard to convince regular people)
Thank you all :)2
You know you're in shit when you take out the disk and put it in a new machine and rebuild the raid and lose all the data
It is better to write almost all of the logic used in the code as comments/documentation.
It is a good thing. It increases Code readability.
Nobody is going to copy your logic and get hired in a high paying job or get promoted for that reason. People will come to know about your wit and will appreciate you instead.2
My parents know that I work with "codes" in computers to make all sort of things 😁. My siblings have some idea of what programming and software engineering is. They tell me that it is fun (they have tried it), but they still don't value it that much 😕
I hate deploying this project, it's just nerve wracking. I started it when I was a newbie to web stuff so I didn't know shit. Now it's just a big project with no unit tests, I test it all by hand.
It looks professional though, but the underlying code is just a mess.5
I am new here and don't know what is Rant & what is devRant all about ... Please tell me . I downloaded it from play store because of good rating. 😅😅5
Why does everyone want to work at Google? I know it's a great job and all, but the amount of blogs talking about how they got their internship at Google and how it was their life goal makes me suspicious.3
Sometimes I just get bored of everything. It all feels burdensome and I don't even feel like touching the keyboard for days. Don't know if this happens to everyone? If it does, got any tips?7
I've been developing in JS for a bit of time now and it was amazing to start with but, for all the problems we all know I d like to move to something else... I m really interested in Dart because of the JS compatibility and the Mobile Framework. Has anyone worked with it?2
Hello all, I know we can search in git lab for the labels(easy, first commit etc) to find open source projects that suit me, but as a rookie it gets a bit frustrating not understanding the project and so on. Does anyone know a better way to contribute to open source and learning at the same time?2
I feel like whenever they are pretending you need to know all the patterns by memory, testing you on that, it's a nonsense and it even makes me stop wanting to enter the place.
Im not supposed to know them instantly, i use tools like the internet. Test my ability to solve problems, comnunicate, work in groups, but, specific stuff by memory? Why?5
Okay Fuck you Ionic
Look I dont know if it is me but when you say there is a $ionicFacebookAuth service in your @ionic/cloud there had better freaking be one!!!!!
Using ionic1 by the way all
When i heard people talking much about scrum & agile things, but he actually never implement yet even worst he didn't really know about scrum it self, just STFO... I'm tired of all those BS 😪1
I guess ill wait until you ignore all my warnings and find out for yourself. But i am the one you keep asking questions about technology to so why do you have all the answers prepared? Why ask me?
So i just keep saying, try it. Try it your way and let me know how it goes.
people have this saying, never give up. but u know what I find in programming that's not true at all. I say give up a lot. as many times as it takes to get the answer. I'm betting a few people know what I'm talking about. that or I'm the weird one. :)1
Some hint on how to take an php 3 old code and transform it to php 7.3 without rewrite all the class ...
Like an auto converters or i dont know ?11
currently I'm kinda lost in web dev, particularly WordPress themes. As I'm knew to this stuff, I feel I'm going to the wrong direction.
I don't know how to properly make a website, until know I've been doing it all by hand, but as I stated theming, I started using sass, auto prefixes, minify (js|css) and I'm wrapping all this with GNU make.
I'm certain this seems wrong, but what should I do??5
Has anyone engineered getting layoff before?
I don't know why, but I dread waking up to the job. It all seems meaningless and a waste of time. I know I'm coming from a place of privilege. But what's the point of doing something you abhor and trading your life for money on shit you hate?1
We're sorry, but something went wrong. We know it works in dev and test and staging, but it just won't fucking work in prod. If you are the application owner check the logs for more information. Note that it won't help you at all in this case - you didn't really think it will be that easy?1
I've though about this off and on but we all know 1st and 3rd party companies. What about 2nd companies though? I mean think about it Apple is the first party company and Mojang is the third party company. What about the second company though? I know I know I just could look it up on Google but eh!3
Thought I'd share this awesome project to you guys that one of my friends made.
He's trying to get it to over a thousand stars so it would be appreciated if you shared it with all your dev friends 😄
Edit: didn't know what category was best, but now that I think about it it should have been posted in question3
Discovered that somehow a lot of emails sent to my gmail have not been going to Inbox for years... Spent all day going thru them and deleting most.
And going forward it seems in going to have to write an app that puts all these v emails back into the inbox, do at least I know I'm getting them...4
Why is everyone+dog starting to harden their systems against quantum computers cracking it? Are usable quantum computers available for all the insiders now? This is all giving me the deja vu feel of eternalblue/wannacry fix Microsoft was passionately recommending to update back when it wasn't publicly know.
Three days out from a field trial, I receive a bug report and change request. A month ago I was told that testing had been completed and the feature set signed off.
Not only have all our manufacturers received their hardware images, not only have they fulfilled our orders but all units have been delivered to our customers!!
After pointing all of this out I hear that wonderful phrase all Devs know and love, "well how hard can it be?"
"Well how hard can it be to flash all of the hardware?"
That has been delivered to all of our customers?
In every state?
All over the whole country?
I'm frustrated with the Firefox Quantum. When a perform a query it takes a long time. I've unchecked the Prevent Accessibility option, I've reseted it, removed all plugins, reinstalled,... I do not know what else to do... Change to chrome?
Fuck the AP comp sci test all they give me is a number (1-5) and that's fucking it, how the fuck and I supposed to know what I did wrong.1
I have been having one of those days, well weeks where new concepts that would have otherwise taken a few hours, to learn and implement are taking days !! I don't know how y'all consistently learn new things and implement them, while still meeting deadlines.
My team usually holds weekly progress meetings where we discuss completed tasks and the following week's tasks. During the last meeting, I hadn't completed anything worth noting and I had no major reason other than, not having fully understood the concept.
Which is embarrassing because everyone else had done something.
I know, I know, I shouldn't compare myself to others but we all know my boss does. I don't blame him though, I mean I always pick the cake with more icing, and that's just food!
I don't even know what to do about it anymore!!! Is this a phase? Is it normal? What do people do about it? wait it out?3
Guys, I have a question regarding dependency injection and MvvM on stackoverflow. If all of you can look at it and maybe answer is you know the answer then I would be super gratefull
I don't know what it is checking for 30min after downloading all fucking updates. I just wanted to upgrade my pc to windows 10 but this never ending "checking for updates" is running.5
I would say pure dedication and commitment to your project, but if that doesn't help I would watch some netflix, go outside, play some games and next thing you know, you forgot all about it.
I just tried to get support for a problem we're having getting accurate results from AdWords. Now I know why it's called Google ANALytics. With how complicated it all can be when you're trying not to overspend on AdWords, it's easy for people unfamiliar with it to get a "prison welcome".
Okay so this has been bugging me. I know object oriented is important and helpful and good over all, but how much do people in the field with jobs use it. And this applies to any language I'm just curious.7
So you guys, at what time exactly do you all sleep? Just wondering because i know what it takes to choose IT as profession. 😁
Writing jest test cases for a MongoDB server app.
I noticed, inside the testEnvironment file, it uses ‘require’ instead of ‘import’.
I changed it to ‘import’...🤔
Somehow it pops out syntaxErrors.🤦♂️
In my actual .test.js file, I use import all the time, never had any issue.
The Babel transform and babel-jest are also in the right place.
Anyone know why?4
Hi everyone well we quit gg scripting cause we figured out lua can be converted to cpp for memory searches! we all know lua and know how to convert it to cpp but for the gui
How do i learn java?9
So with Christmas coming up my family asked me to make a list of the things I want, all of it adding up to a maximum of €25. Me being me I really don't know what I want other than that I would like something educational and programming related also something to learn machine learning would be nice
All help would be appreciated9
This is my story.
So, as you know, I'm a developer and so does all of you, but before I know about devRant, I was stuck with Instagram.
Yup, I was stuck with those instagram memes who was made by those social media manager who doesn't know shit about coding and post shitty memes anyway with those #memes #codingmemes #coding #codememes and all that fucking annoying hashtags.
I hate it. I was stuck with it for two years but thank god for the people who told me about this app.
I love it, but, there is some problems. As you may know this social media was created by developers for developers, and I know that this app users is very supportive for other users because of the same profession, but what if non-devs people found out about this app and start doing job offers and spamming at our feeds.
What could we do?5
Hey I feel the need to commend gmail's web ui. One thing I love is when it's possible to control gui programs with just keyboard and gmail got it done right. I know I know oldfag ahahahaa, whatever may you mouse lovers all get carpal and anal tunnels.1
So some of the C++ guys I deal with have this thing in their mind that they know all the other languages cause they're similar right, and they argue that it doesn't work vice versa. You know Java, you don't know c++
Simple advice to people out there who meet such people is to just ask them to make a Java program with the goto command
Little know it all freaks.11
Starting yesterday, I'm going to study a total of 400 hours over the next 3-4 months on coding, system design, and behavioral interviews. My goal is to 2x my current salary (currently make almost 6 figures) and get out of this shitty company. I want to make it big and say that my studying was all worth it.
Wish me luck peeps. I'll come back in dues time to let you know how it all went.
A more of an informative thread .
I'm a noob when it comes to privacy protection..
I'll ask all the Indian DevRant is, how can an individual/organisation misuse your Aadhar card , email address and phone number details .
Like if they have it together , how can they misuse it?
It'll great if you can let me know9
We're supporting hardware for a new client now. A guy on my team has been working directly with the client to set up access for us all. He sent us all an email yesterday, asking us to update a ticket with our, "domain name and passphrase."
He meant user id and ssh public key, but he doesn't know enough about Linux (which he supports for a living) to know what it was called.
Started working on a project in january, knew nothing of the platform i was working on. Now after 4 months and multiple holidays and vacations(festivals and stuff). I have a "running" prototype of the app. BUT its not configured properly, i know this much. But i have lost track of the changes and files, basically i don't know how it all is working.
I know lets create a method that does nothing like this other method, but call it the same thing with 'get' in front. Won't confuse anyone at all that3
Don't know how it works but I am really confused why orgs are so obsessed with kubernetes native infra .and migrating hell all to it1
Anybody using PhoneGap?
I know that it isn't perfect, but for simple, rapid development it gets the job done.
Basically because (for me) takes out all the fuss of building the app.
Now that it is been discontinued I cannot feel but disappointed.2
I'm FRICKIN' TIRED of all the 'devs forever alone' memes! I mean I have a girlfriend and reading rants here I've come across various people in relationships.....then why still all the jokes and hate? I know it can be tough dating a dev but still it's not impossible! Let's start a poll here.....how many of you claim to be 'not single'?6
I imported my phpstorm settings into rider and it started syncing both the IDE's settings to my github settings repository, but it did successfully import all my plugins and theme settings
I know the mix of rider and phpstorm settings might cause issues, but I'm curious as hell as to what chaos it might bring :)
Ahhhhh.... Now i want to really know how developers make softwares, ROMs, chatbots using ML and all these type of stuff.
- When i go through the guide for making ROM for a smartphone or a chatbot the writer asks the reader to take the code from github, everybody just give github link and move on. None tells how the developer wrote that bunch of code. I really want to learn core concepts behind all this. I know how to code but i can't apply it in real life applications. For me there is no bridge which connects coding to end products. I don't know what to do next?4
My peers in college. All the way, if it weren't for them I wouldn't know what github was, esp my friend Gabe who really opened my eyes to many fields.
Testing new server deployment in test env all works, then production it all breaks down. Network didn't allowed the right traffic. Took me whole week to find that out. Until some networking engineer said, you know there is a firewall between those networks?
When your boss has you learn a new language but then doesn't listen to any of your input concern this language and acts like they know the language as well....which they don't
One person I work with thinks they know what they're doing but they have no idea, and we all know it and make fun of him behind his back.
I don't understand why corporate waste so much money on agile training they know that doesn't gonna improve performance of developer at all. Instead of it decreases his performance because of so many annoying meeting and reporting3
Do you know about any Linux tools to migrate records from existing nameserver to a new (self-hosted) nameserver? We have multiple domains and it will be pain to migrate all of them manually. Thanks!7
I don’t know if they really don’t want Sass or if they’re just scared to try it.
Not all new techs are horrible.
Hope one day they will realize that using CSS preprocessors is way better. And it’s not that as complicated as it sounds. Jesus Christ.
@ pro-CSS frontends, any thoughts?5
Is it that you don’t care that you’re being used an manipulated all the time - or that you don’t know that it’s happening?4
I don't know how many of you know about ERB or if you are fans of it, but I thought you all might enjoy this rap battle :)
You know something is not right when out of 13 SP task only 3 SP are for the actual implementation (with tests!) and the rest is for all the Agile / SDLC dance around it.2
have anyone tried to install visual Studio professional 2017... it stucked so don't know what to do now... I don't want to lose all the progress T.T9
Been learning more about crypto and blockchain (i know i know buzzword) but I mean I'm still a noob at pretty much everything so it was hard to find something that explains all that at a really technical level. BUT I then found www.cryptoeconomics.study
and it's been going great 😊
How to handle a "Mr/Mrs -KNOW-IT-ALL " or The "I know everything and anything" kind of person in a work place ?5
"Chances are, unless I’m a designer, I don’t know what I want. All I know is I want something functional that looks good, is comparable with my competitors, and features constant colour schemes for branding. I’ll look at other designs that have already been created and ask for something similar. Hence, it is important that you can take the information I give and help me visualize what it is you think I want." - Aditya Mahesh
Cheers to all good programmers but know not good English. PS: it should be a list of locationNames3
I don't know what's happening. In passing a char pointer to a function. I'm having issue, so I'm printf'ing the address pointed to by the pointer. Right after I assign it, it contains the right address, but the printf on the next line has it containing a different address. Another printf shows another different value, but all the following printfs show that third value. They're all consecutive printfs with nothing happening in between in the program, and the char* starts it's life as an array. All compiler optimizations are disabled. I don't know what's happening, it's just randomly changing. 😭2
PR done and dusted. Welp! Somehow all permissions on files have been changed. I didnt change it. Wtf happened? Log search turns up I did change it while resolving merge conflicts. I don't know how. Anyway now I am spending my afternoon working on the vaguest fucking issue and reverting back all file permissions. Might have somehow fucked up two repos and will have to fix them all. Kill me. Now
Hey guys, i'v been working in a company for almost 1 year as a web developer. I only know the basic data structures and algorithms even after this year and also my co workers didn't seem to know graph, trees and other algos like dijikstra and all those advanced algo types. I'm searching for a job with better salary should I have to learn all these to get paid well ? Where even I can apply these things in my job? Is it worth ?11
Does it ever irk you when a tech complains "I didn't know i needed to know this?" As though they didn't realize that IT kinda requires taking on new subjects all the time?1
If I have several nodejs apps and JS being single threaded, how do I know that when I start all of them, they aren't running on a single cpu?
I'm. Not sure if I'm understanding it correctly but say I start 1 app, that means all the app's work will be done on whichever cpu it was started on? Or can it spawn additional threads and on other cpus to do (nonjs) work?9
When you get co-workers that rant all the time.. They say they know everything but can't seem to do anything right. Can we just relax and have fun at work.
You know how last week I asked you to take all the colour out of the bash prompt... Well I kinda got used to it, so can you put it back in?
So I decided to install windows 10 and I'll use it for quite some time. I want to make it as usable as possible.
So, does any of you know how to permanently remove all those shit apps that pop up in my start menu?
And how to remove Cortana and Edge?
I'll be thankful for any help D:1
