There's this guy that sits next to me in a class.
Guy: Hey, you're a hacker right?
Me: I'm a programmer.
Guy: Can you hack into my email account?
Me: Nope, I work in a different field of computer science.
In reality, I want to give him a piece of my mind.
I already know his email so I open up the login page and enter it. I click "forgot password", and it asks for his favorite teacher's name. Keep in mind that he made this account this year.
Me: So anyways, who's your favorite teacher?
Guy: *proceeds to give me favorite teacher's name*
I change his password and log into his account. After that, I show him and tell him about how he should keep his account secure.
He left class with a priceless look on his face.14
Friend: What's that?
Me: DuckDuckGo. It's my default search engine.
Friend: Try using Google instead, it's better.
Me: But Google spies on you.
Me: Don't you care about your privacy?
Friend: It's not like they are going to kill me. It doesn't matter.
Me: *mumbles* typical muggle...
I'm surprised that people could care less for their privacy. I would ban all things google, but I need google docs.
Also, my idiotic school requires gmail and google classroom. Oh, and did I forget to mention we have to use chromebooks!100
The worst part about having a job that is not related to programming is that I don't have as much time to code as I would like to :(5
Was discussing IPv6 subnets with a couple mates, when suddenly a non-tech friend standing by jumps in and says: "I'm doing no-NAT-November!"2
Hello fellas! 👋
I recently told you that I’m planning to pull out Chaaat – a fully open source messenger that doesn’t track you and doesn’t share your data: https://devrant.com/rants/1549251/....
The project is also mentioned here: https://devrant.com/rants/1570178/...
So, I’m here to tell you good news – a great developer, @not-a-muggle, decided to join me, and now we made a team!
I also made some conversations and acquired “chaaat” name from another team on Heroku, so now we have consistent domain name on both Heroku and GitHub Pages.
We have Trello board with very well described tasks almost anyone can do. We also have Slack to have both business and free conversations.
If you’re seeking a place to contribute and gain some NodeJS / React / PWA / WebRTC experience with detailed code review from experienced developer, just mention me here or shoot me an email on firstname.lastname@example.org. Provide your email so I’ll be able to contact you.
Our main goals are:
1. Have fun and some experience
2. Make it to Chrome Experiments mention
Marketing/advertising help is much appreciated.
Feel free to email me anytime!10
It's that moment when a Muggle asks you to "build a search engine from scratch" for their site and says it should be an easy task that should take no more than 4 days. And you are just a web developer...10
Just read this comment in my code from a few months ago... I guess I was in a strange mood at that time..
// Listen for fuckers. Also known by their muggle name: users.2
Me and tech coworker opens office front door. Another coworker starts ranting how he accidentally hit som key combo and started some speech synthesis feature in Windows. Me and tech coworker both declared we had never heard of that feature before.
Ten minutes goes by, then muggle coworker comes by asking for help to turn it off. Tech coworker Googles solution in literally 6 seconds on the phone without even stopping the conversation we had going on when muggle interrupted.
How is it that muggles haven't found out that the Internet contains stuff?! And that it's searchable!!
I just overheard at the office one of my colleagues dont want to move on my side cause Im so quiet he didnt like me to be his seatmate. So tell me what's wrong on the person who just want to focus and do good work huh?5
How would you feel if you can't solve your code? I'm almost a week stuck on a server problem. I applied for frontend dev position, it's okay for me to do this kind of stuff but the fact that I can't solve it for so long it makes me feel down :(6
So I was having problem logging in to slack. It seemed like their two-factor authentication was not working. So I kept on pondering and pondering. Then suddenly a light bulb was lit in my brain. I said to myself, "what would an ordinary muggle do? They surely will click on this contact us button and raise a ticket with them." So that's exactly what I did.
so after a while slack did sent me 16 text messages together as a sweet reward of my trials. I was happily working in Slack and then I realised they in fact did answer my ticket. The only thing is I just needed to log in to get the answer I need. I am happily reminded I wasnt the only fuckwit left into existence...
So my aunt called because her phone had ran out of storage as she had "by mistake" disabled Play Store,WhatsApp, Browser, Chrome and every other fucking app, and she had to install WhatsApp back. After an hour of struggle explaining her to move her songs to memory card, enabling Chrome and Play Store, installing WhatsApp, I have started to lose faith from humaninty.
To make things worse, every Android phone manafacturer feels obligatory to change the settings app as per their wish and I didn't have a clue where the settings to enable apps were on her phone.
And I had to do all this through a phone call
And I can't say "No"
There should be a button in Android: I'm too dumb for all this stuff4
How do you use youtube in china? Asking for a muggle friend in a foreign exchange program. I sent a link to proxysite.com but the lack of response makes me wonder if that was a bad idea without further precaution. I've never configured a VPN before and Tor is a very bad idea here.4
The "It doesn't work" response when you are helping a friend do some stuff on a computer just kills me.1
