Fuck strict corporate software policies, just let me WORK (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
When I came to this new workplace I was given a Windows laptop. And it came with a bunch of pre-installed corporate stuff and policies like automatic mandatory frequent driver and windows updates. Although I prefer linux, I thought, maybe I'll switch later, first let's see how everything works here, since on Windows I had all VPNs, certificates and other corpo stuff pre-configured out of the box. But imagine missing a standup, because of windows update in the morning. Or missing audio, because of drivers update in the middle of the meeting. And make it every week or so. Also, I couldn't not install my portable DAC drivers, because limited access, blah blah fuck me. And many other small things that I vaguely remember by now.
Later corpo decided to add a tracking plugin into a browser and that was it for me. Gladly, corpo policy allows using Linux (they have their own modified Ubuntu version), which has MUCH less of this crap. I mean, it's still somewhat managed by corpo (like I can't get rid of duplicated PPA, lol.. and sometimes I need to wait like 1-2 mins to login to my laptop because of login server timeout), but that's still better...
Linux, home, sweet home, I missed you <3
Also, I dodged the bullet. Win11 upgrade was a funny shit show to watch :D1 -
HOW!? Just HOW THE FUUUCK??!
Did anybody ever try to put a cinnamon desktop onto a ubuntu server version?? 'Cause this is simply fucked up!
Just add the ppa they said. Just run
$ apt-get install cinnamon
they said!
APT-GET YOUR FUCKING HEADS OUT OF YOUR ASSES!
ARRRGGGH. *table-flip*8 -
People around me be like "Why you never take a break?? I see you work all the time. Doesn't your company offer you a paid holiday??"
Yeah they do offer a paid holiday, but even on holiday I still have to work because I'm the IT manager, full stack developer, database admin, helpdesk and everything that is related to IT.

I got stuck with a small task for days, today I just have the courage to ask for help and a senior literally gave me the code for the problem! I'm not sure if I should be happy for finishing the task or embarrassed for couldn't solve the problem by myself. 😄😥5

Had a PHP test for a job application yesterday. The test contains nearly 20 questions, most are 2 points. I had to write the answer into a word file and cannot use search engine. I thought I did okay because most of the questions were asking like 'what is php', 'what is isset', etc. which I could answer all of them and pretty confident that I answered correctly but the recruiter contacted back today that I failed...:(
It's my first time applying for a programing job after been working in the field for almost 3 years. Feel so bad.. Feel so unqualified 😥😥7 -
So f*king stressed out!
3 weeks passed at new job and I still feel like I don't know what I'm doing. My PRs got tons of comments and I still can't finish a tiny ticket that should be very easy but it's in a stack that I have almost 0 knowledge about. I feel so incompetent and afraid that I won't pass the probation. 😥
The stress hit so hard that I can't eat, feeling nausea every morning and can't sleep well at all. I question myself if I'm too stupid to be a developer, should I just give up?
😭😰😱😥😵
Argh this is so bad!10 -
Just convinced my manager to get us a 3D printer so we can print out rubber duckies.
Now the hard part comes in.
Where do i find a similar model for the devRant rubber ducky.
I like the rubber duckies they used to have in the store.12 -
what is the point of having massive HR departments if something as expected and frequent as university hiring can't go smoothly?
i managed to reach the interview round for a big 4 firm only for the interviewer to not show up for 4 hours from my time slot (i waited the entire time - took periodic screenshots for proof), HR to say "we'll reschedule your interview, this happened because of internal miscommunication" more than THREE months ago, and dip. until december they'd repeat the same. now they've ghosted. thanks, virtual hiring.
how is it the candidate's fault? found out this isn't rare by speaking to a few others from my network who i knew were interviewing for the same firm. for students whose lives can change completely based on the outcome of an opportunity that they came across due to sheer luck and could definitely make use of because of their hard work - this is so heartbreaking and demotivating.1 -
can't believe it but things actually have started to fall into place on their own, career-wise. feels unreal. need to work enough to afford a cottage with a cobblestone path & my life will be complete2

Dear debian package maintainers...
If you want me to add you PPA to my list please MAKE SURE IT FUCKING WORKS!
so after 1000 emails from Google baiting me to try Google cloud tools I did. 24 hours later apt-get is dead and I'm trying to remove the shit storm of gpg keys etc it added to my machine. -
Dear Kubuntu 20.04
You're not a programming language but I felt that you fit here in this wkRant so people can see how shitty you became.
It's about 6:27am CET, and you wasted my night, you used to be as simple as sudo apt-get install, now you're mostly PPA first or worse, make. You killed make now we use cmake. We are now looking for debs, which is a pain since you end up in an index site without download here. And the debs now don't work. Missing dependencies. You killed core libraries saying they are now incompatible or obsolete.
All I want is my god damn cli visualiser and osdlyrics back!!9 -
First day at work and after seeing the codebase and how everyone's talking about the code, I'm pretty sure I don't have imposter syndrome, I'm just that bad...13

I often have the problem of messing up my Linux installation, it gets unstable or the desktop envoirment gets slow / unresponsive
I want to switch to Ubuntu (with budgie) for quite a while but I'm afraid I mess up my system again...
Any tips for an inexperienced Linux person? tips to keep your system healthy and stable, tings to avoid when installing (like adding unofficial ppa...)
Thank you in advance 💙
(also how do you deal with errors? Do you just search the internet and try it out? ((and yes, I did brick a few installations 'trying it out')) 😅)7 -
every day my boss says he'll review the requirements for our product. every day he forgets to do so. every day he asks where the update for the next stage is. every day i remind him. every day he forg ---2

Had my first ever final interview as a developer after passing the first ever coding assignment, now can't stop thinking if I should have answered the questions differently.
I was very honest to my answer when they asked "How do you test your application?" As I started building the app with 0 knowledge about software development and know nothing about software testing. So I just told them the truth that I did not do any proper test, I just used a checklist and manual test to test my app and the app that I created for the assignment was the first app that I write a proper test cases and implement an automated test. The same goes to other questions like automated deployment and OOP experience. I just told them the honest truth even though I know that they are not the best practice. Did I just f*cked up the interview??
Arghh can't stop thinking2 -
Many people say that it's easy to pass probation, so I wonder what would make someone not pass a probation in your opinion?9

Anybody yet with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on their server? any issues, anything that is majorly different to 16.04?
I was still starting servers with 16.04 but now that laravel needs php7.1 and install candidate seems to be 18, it would be much more handy, not having to each time add the third party ppa, for the most basic dependencies5 -
Goes to my comment on on of the rants to "Why linux cannot AVER be used by a normal user"
I'm pretty good with techs, OS, dev etc.
But here you go, a random error message which tells me nothing (Absolutelly nothing) and no way to fix it. No way to fix it, not even a hint where to look for solution, outside google. Sure, It took me around 5 minutes to find the problem googeling and copy/pasting some bash commands, but next time it happens and I don't have internet ? Well fucked.
This shit never happens on Wiondows or MacOs :) And that's why these 2 will always be user firendly ans linux will never be.
That's why linux will never be used by normal humains.
You 100% linux addict will point out directlly 'TYeah yours repos sources are fuckied" or whatever, but it IS NOT to user to know how sources, packages etc work. I want just update my system, if one source is not found, ignotre it by default ! How hrd is that ?
Error message in question :
E: The repository 'https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/tr... jammy Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
Thanks for assisting to my ted talk.19 -

So, despite being pretty experienced with Linux server management, today, I failed, even after hours spent tinkering, to get Bumblebee working on an older laptop of mine (Intel i3 + Geforce 960m).
What's funnier is that before I wiped that laptop with a clean install, it was working, albeit it on an out of date kernel / driver combo.
Though curiously, despite using the newest release of Xubuntu, the Bumblebee PPA repo wasn't signed (Missing InRelease file), and further lacked one of the Package index files (For i386 i believe)
I'm about to sell the laptop tomorrow. Anyone has any hints or things I could have missed? I still have a day to work on it, and if I don't manage, I'll just put on a clean win install...4 -
Which method do you prefer: installing softwares via apt-get install or .deb packages?
My colleague disagreed with me when I choose apt-get install over downloading the .deb package. Later on it turned out the package on the ppa was outdated and didn't include systemd init scripts. I purged the package and installed the .deb provided in its website.
Worked like charm.
He had a good laugh.2 -
which is the best cloud provider for a complete beginner (user/dev) in terms of community support, employer preference and user-friendliness?
i know that understanding the tech and concepts behind it matters more than getting familiarized with a specific platform, but i'm looking to build a more diverse profile and have noticed many positions asking for AWS/Azure experience.
since i'll be starting from scratch, any provider with easy-to-follow documentation, online help and certifications that don't leave you broke (would have to pay myself, earn very less as a student from a third-world country, parents/current employer can't support) would work.8
