1. Go to office!
2. Make coffee!!
3. Start computer.
4. Get to wo.."Windows must restart in order to install some updates".
4. 3 hours later => "Working on updates 68% n/ Don't turn off your PC. This will take a while."
4. Fuck this, I'm going home.
I miss Linux...14 -
My gf caught me unguarded after she told me that she has some updates for her webpage, right after I did the last updates. Massively amused. Not! 😅24
-
Windows is such a great os. Especially after you installed the windows updates. Look what cool features it unlocked :19
-
Not to be pedantic but shouldn't "100% completed" actually mean totally finished?
Why am I still watching a spinning circle?12 -
"You got infected with WannaCry because you didn't install updates"
"You got infected with NotPetya because you did install updates"
Users:9 -
OK! all you windows haters.
This is why i totally love windows to death.
it has awesome features no other OS has...
like, installing updates to office and Skype when they are not even installed, there's not even a registry entry anywhere for them!!
now show me another OS that updates non existing software and ill be all over it!
On a serious note, does anyone know how windows would think office and Skype are installed since I can’t find a single trace of them anywhere?23 -
I just had to update my BIOS while trying to update Windows while trying to update the Visual Studio Updater while trying to update Visual Studio while trying to update my C++ Compiler while trying to update the drivers for... my mouse. Mouse, of all things....3

Microsoft: We're brings new updates to Edge....
Me: Oh nice, was about time.
**Reads changelog**
"Edge now has support for Internet Explorer"
"No, really, you can now run IE in Edge."
Me: Oh for Fuck Sake!15 -
Windows obviously did a secret selective poll on what percentage of their users use dates and times.
:#16 -
"Updates were installed successfully"
No Windows, you got stuck at 83% and I had to hard reset you, we tried again and you got stuck at 91% so I had to hard reset you again... That is not what I call "successful" updates...5 -
$ sudo pacman -Syu

Please, don't break my system.
Please, don't break my system.

When you opened Visual Studio and before programming you decided to download and install the latest update.. and it started to download 19 GB of updates...
Nice! I will be able to do what I wanted tonight...4 -
Windows...
Yesterday: "11 updates available"
*Didn't install them to avoid the restart notification*
Today: "No updates available"

Humans generally distract the fuck out of me when I try to code. And when they leave me alone, Windows decides its a great fucking time to install its shitty updates.2

When you don't have new feature to add to the app but need to keep updates.
"General bug fixes and performance improvements."3 -
Just bought the Surfacebook and all day at work I imagined trying out all its features and different apps - Then I woke up to realise it is still a Windows device, been installing updates for the past two hours.2
-
Thanks Windows!
I’m really glad you started to install your fucking updates when I tried to wake up you from the “Sleep mode”, and of course you also decided to restart the PC just after that throwing away the entire work I was doing...19 -
Windows: I have updates, please pick an option:
* Update and shut down
* Update and reboot
Me: Ok, update and shut down
Windows: Updates and reboots10 -
That moment when you have important programs running in Windows 10 (Including an Ubuntu virtual machine) and Windows decides to just reboot, without permission for updates.6

I have to do 3 hours of offline coding for a job interview.

“Get Linux, they’ve said. You don’t have to restart after the update, they’ve said”
Maybe I’m stupid, or Ubuntu Budgie sucks, but every time after tiny update, the system says I need to reboot. Just like Windows!18 -
I fucking hate when I update my apps and they don't describe what they changed. Like the latest spotify update description:
We’re always making changes and improvements to Spotify. To make sure you don’t miss a thing, just keep your Updates turned on.2 -
It's because I'm still fixing those machines, Microsoft. I'm only one tech! Be patient, I still have 15% left to go. 🤣
-
ditched windows for good 2 months ago. never been happier!
"I really miss unexpected and time consuming OS updates!"
- no one ever10 -
Ya know I don't mind Windows updates, I get it the OS needs its updates, so last night a pop up asked to when to do the update I thought hmm maybe Sunday (probably be driving my motorbike so I'll be out of the house), set the time and done.
Afterwards I go to shut my computer down and accidentally hit update and restart out of shear annoyance. So I wait it out, I thought well okay now it's done I won't have to wait. I go to shut down and it says "update and shut down", ... Right after I just updated...
I thought okay at least I'll be going to be knowing tomorrow I can just turn my computer on and play some games to chill for the night.
Oh but no, nope not gonna happen, I have to wait for it to "actually" update. Been waiting for about 30ish minutes :/
I think I'll make sure that updates don't happen anymore, I'm pretty annoyed at this waiting :/
Honestly wouldn't have had Windows 10 in the first place but somehow my computer decided to just install Windows 10 after I kept saying nope to it's damn pop-up, I just turned it on and boom "we're fuckingyour day up by installing Windows 10"
I actually take off anything that makes Windows 10 look like it and make it look more like win7.
70% done :/6 -
Anti Rant: Is it just me or are Google Play app updates rolling out really fast... Like i have published some updates recently and they have been live in under 10 mins.
Looks like Google got their act together!10 -
to all those smart-asses who kept praising Windows for the new "active hours" feature as opposed to forced restart when updates are downloaded.
I work more than 14 hours a day, WILLINGLY!18 -
Conspiracy Theory:
Windows 10 - suspiciously free upgrade and "pirate friendly."
Microsoft - really rolling with the hardware scene lately.
Windows 10 Updates - suspiciously destroyed the hardware in 4 laptops and a desktop I've worked on putting the owners in the market for new Microsoft hardware.
Coincidence?9 -
When using Windows, I really feel like I don't own my computer. Like it'll update automatically without giving a single fuck wether you wish to install these updates on YOUR machine and install what Microsoft wants.
"Sup I'm the Windows update manager, seems like you're in the middle of some important work right now, let me just force reboot your machine and install some crap bloatware"9 -
Linux is an amazing, stable operating system.
Until you decide to upgrade it, then you realise the update failed, your DE is broken and after using Timeshift to restore the system, your GRUB decided to commit seppuku.26 -
Dear software developers, I realise, as a dev myself, the need for auto updates for security and stability, but, outside of only a few niche circumstances, are they really necessary on a fucking *daily* or even *hourly* basis? Congratulations for fixing that minor specific non-crucial bug that 99% of users have never encountered, and I'm happy you're maintaining your code so diligently, but couldn't it wait until next Sunday? By that time I'm sure you could combine the update with all the other minor fixes you'll come up with the interim.
And I wouldn't have to click my way through this shit every time I open the app4 -
I really really really don't like Windows. The amount of awful updates that I have to do all of the time, the fact that my mother just had Windows updates try and run, fail, try and run again, fail again, and then try a third time. But I'm stuck with it, because if I try and run a Linux live CD, my computer has a fit. Because Ryzen. Fantastic21
-
Me: Does Microsoft does beta testing before launching updates?
MS: YOU ARE THE NEW BETA TESTER, WELCOME!4 -
Dam wandows... My system is up to date almost all the time as I install those forced updates before they are actually forced, just so I can be in control of saving things and not losing anything valuable during a forced restart. I've updated literally last evening and made sure the day is done only after all the updates have been made. Today I was working on a personal project and made an hour break for lunch and some rest. My computer went to sleep as it usually does when I leave it for 10 minutes or so... Or so I thought. After my break I sat behind the damn computer to get back to work only to realize that I woke it up to wrong system (windows is secondary as I only use it for this single project that needs to be done in .net and UWP) and there's no work to get back to. It just made an update without even letting me know there is one to be made.
I swear, if the person who made this design choice have paid only 1% of all the lost works' worth, they would smash the thing on day one and went bankrupt in first 2hrs of that 'feature' living it's life. And people wonder I daily drive *NIX based system...5 -
So much windows 10 updating rants. I have w10 aside with Fedora. I believe that last time I started windows somewhere in June. I'm really intrigued to see those updates on my laptop. Going to boot into Windows now. Wish me luck.11

Why do I feel like developers at Zoom don't have a life: They release a list of over hundreds of new updates and bug fixes almost everyday. As much as I give them credits I also still feel sorry for them.4
-
Forgot to turn off mobile hotspot when I connected my phone with a Windows PC. Fucking windows used all my data to download 'security' updates. Bhenchod.9

After reading all the rants about windows updates, I should have seen this coming :C
20 minutes and still waiting.5 -
Ranting too much on Windows updates comes with karma.

Is anyone else get irritated while upgrading apps and seeing changelogs as:
1. minor improvements
2. performance boost
3. information not provided by the dev
4. repeating changelogs from the past few updates.
just tell me what minor improvement u fixed?
where performance is boost?
how can I trust if tomorrow you decide to add some malicious code.
I don't know but it really irritates me. Sometimes I don't even upgrade the app until they have something in the changelog.
Maybe because I am getting old now.8 -
So I had to update my OS to Ubuntu 22.04 to support some newer software. I had been running 18.04. One of the things I notice is Ubuntu restricting security updates to Ubuntu Pro users. WTF is this shit? I look into it a bit more:
https://flu0r1ne.net/logs/...
and a long discussion with people for and against:
https://lobste.rs/s/h2dszz/...
Okay, great, Ubuntu is employing some hostage style manipulation to get people to pay for using the OS. Probably an exaggeration, but feels very slimy. But that part is NOT what bothers me about this.
What bothers me the most about this is Ubuntu will now have a list of computers that have or do not have specific security patches. This is valuable information if someone wants to sell this to a third party. Maybe Ubuntu would not do that, but they can always get bought by someone who would do that. This feels dirty like something Microsoft or Google would do.
I probably don't know the complete story. But the misunderstanding still leads me to want to avoid Canonical.12 -
Although I know you can disable the updates and this is not everyone's music style etc, I thought I'd share this song since I find it very funny:
Amentis - Stupid Updates
https://youtube.com/watch/...
(Music genre: Rawstyle) -
One of the many reasons why I like Linux more than Windows, yesterday I upgraded from Ubuntu 17.04 to 18.04 and it didn't need to restart. In fact updates in general only rarely require a restart, and it never forces them upon me9
-
While everyone hates on Windows for getting updates and having to restart it.... I hate on FileZilla for receiving way too many updates and also having to restart it... more than Windows...7
-
"Raspbian has no auto-updates installed by default"

Windows 10 updates. I see many posts about singular events that people have experienced, so I thought I'd try to sum up all the problems I have had.
Home computer, always on:
Is scheduled to update during 'inactive hours' but the options for that window are too narrow. So almost daily the 'required updates' overlay pops up WHILE I'M DOING STUFF and I have to say 'Ok' then close the update settings window that opens automatically so I can get on with what I'm doing.
Now, if I'm just browsing, writing or something like that, it's just really annoying.
But when I'm gaming and it causes the game to freeze up (because, you know, ubisoft and ea and such) and I lose my progress, that pisses me off.
When I'm hosting movie night with my friends and the movie gets interrupted, that pisses me off.
Even when I'm just trying to relax with a good show after a hard day and THAT gets interrupted, it really bugs me.
And then when there's a major update and I don't want to schedule it right away, they decide that I probably meant 'do it in an hour'. And then a message pops up every hour with only the option to postpone one more hour. What happened to all the options for scheduling it for several days in the future? Nope! Can't decide? We'll do it RIGHT NOW, NO TAKEBACKS, THAT'S FINAL!
I cannot fathom that they can't find a way to ACTUALLY do the 'inactive hours' thing.
And then there's the work computer. For the last two years, that has been a laptop that I shut down and take home every day. The common problem with that is that it always tells me it has to update when I want to shut down for the day because I have to go home. I can't leave the pc turned on in my bag, it would overheat. So since there is no option to shut down without updating anymore, I have had to rely on the fact that using the power button to shut down circumvents the update.
And if I don't remember to update at home, it's then going to waste my time the next morning at work.
Just give me the option to delay for a bit, then remind me NON-INTRUSIVELY so I can do it when I have the time.
And then there was the update that prevented the machine from booting and I had to waste TWO working days reinstalling EVERYTHING! And we were about 6-7 people hit by that update in our organization.
So yeah. Windows updates are a real fucking problem. Yes, I wan't critical fixes for security problems and other serious software flaws.
But the current policy of 'fuck you, we're doing this' is just not fucking acceptable in any way.3 -
Exactly when I do NOT need to be doing updates because system stability is critical to meeting deadlines, suddenly...5
-
I, after a very long time, had to use Windows.
My Ubuntu system died yesterday with faulty hard disk. Good for me that all my data is on cloud and I dont lose anything apart from the software installations. I have ordered a new hard disk and it will come in 3 days time.
In the meanwhile, I wanted to continue my work and I have my wife’s Windows 10 laptop. She doesnt use it often ever since she got a Tablet last year. It was a good chance for me to try out Windows after a while.
The laptop hadnt been used for a while now(probably Dec 2020) and when I started it, I got all sorts of notifications for updates - Windows update, Browser Updates, other Application updates. Coming from Ubuntu world which has a single notification for all software updates, this was just too many notifications. Plus, for some applications you dont get the update notification till you open them.
And by far the biggest frustrating part of this is the Windows update which takes like forever to first install update after all applications are closed, and then installing and configuring some more when the system boots up. And all you do while this happens is watch the screen with progress indicator moving 1% every minute. The system is not usable and even more so, I dont know what application or package is updated.
I started this activity today at 10AM and its 11:53am now, and I still havent been able to use the system to actually do the work. Its a half an hour work on a Google Doc and I have been waiting for it for about 2 hours now.
Its so amazing that Windows system is so screwed still. I dont know what will it take for Windows to have a consistent package and release management. Its so frustrating to update each application on its own.10 -
Shower thoughts:
If windows 10 is the last version of windows and all new progress will come as feature updates,
i) How will Microsoft release their currently being researched ReFS file system?
Also
ii) does this mean that windows 10 is turing complete OS?
BTW I use arch ;P
Edit: typo8 -
The Windows update task scheduler: "I'll make 19 very very important, 20 very important, 12 important, 0 really important and 400 optional updates. And when you are currently at a meeting in the next room, I'll gonna restart in 15 minutes and make 451 updates, when you want to show the demo. "
-
20 minutes for a 1GB update.
It's getting tiresome and an inconvenience to switch on an Xbox for a quick game.
I have installed entire Operating Systems quicker.than these updates take to complete.
Consoles used to be convenient to fire up and play, that was a lot of the appeal.
And are controllers getting heavier?38 -
I really do wish that Apple would put some more effort into their update screen.
Just having a progress bar that crawls along at an agonising pace isn't useful, in fact it makes the process feel longer than it is.
Give us some feedback as to what is going on, even Windows and Linux managed that.1 -
Windows Updates...
I know, this topic is as old as the human race, but still.
Yesterday Windows kept whining about updates. When I went to bed I allowed windows to finally do it's updates. Now I'm back from work and the machine isn't running anymore. I thought, OK, it won't annoy me this evening.
But I overlooked the one essential thing about windows updates.
IT WILL DO THE MAIN WORK WHEN IT BOOTS THE NEXT TIME!
When I explicitly tell you to do the updates, you will barely do anything but turning off! And the next time I'm trying to use you, you will do a shit ton of things and lock me out while doing so.
When it says that it'll update, shouldn't it install and reboot until it's done? Am I the one who's crazy?
Instead of "working" with the computer, I'm stuck with this shit.2 -
I'm I the only one who doesn't face any problems with windows updates? Not sure why people complaining so much about it and the rant feed is full of windows update problems. Strange!4
-
This is the best thing that could happen for people with headaches in relation to updates. Anniversary update brings more control.10
-
Even as i type this rant the letters appear after some lag ....
Why is everything so slow ? Uh it's that time again....4 -
I am amazed. My laptop died due to lack of electricity (no battery), but Windows still managed to prepare update and forces me to install it when I turned it back on. And of course it requires multiple restarts.1
-
I spent about 45 mins this morning going through memes and gaming videos till my workstation finished doing updates.
On one side: fuck updates, what in the holy fuck.
On the other side: fuck yeah, down time to do bs.
I ain't even gonna bitch about Microsoft. It is what it is. Legit no complaints.
Just wish the process was maybe a lil bit similar to Debian updates maybe. Just maybe.11 -
For all you complaning about Windows updates.
The last one requires you to accept new Terms of Service.
So just don't accept the : no updates EVER.3 -
And so.. I have noticed.. every time I ignore Windows updates for a little while.. the laptop just starts shitting. It gets so fucking slow that you can’t even move the cursor properly. So you have to force shut down the laptop and turn it ON.. and Windows starts updating!
Not at all irritating 😊3 -
I've disabled automatic updates on windows 10 long time back. Still they download and updates every time.
Do they have some hidden settings that only can be disabled by a non-linux user?8 -
Sometimes, when I’m stressed, I do this thing that I really enjoy looking at: installing updates.
Homebrew, pip, npm (global & local), apt, even manual updates in apps. This in several machines.
I like having the logs flow smoothly. It’s soothing.5 -
I've made the mistake of reinstalling windows with a ~6 months old installation media.
It's been 12 fucking hours of windows updates. FFS2 -
I had a coworker that NEVER restarted his computer or installed updates of any kind. Any time he showed me some code I got distracted by the "new updates are available" popup that was always there in his IDE.
I can't even imagine the backlog of critical security updates that were waiting to be installed when we left after 3 years.3 -
I am seeing a lot of people infuriated a lot about windows10 updates.
And I am just sitting here on win7 with disabled updates.
Waiting for some free time to fetch my new computer with ryzen, throwing some linux dist on it and virtualize the shit out of windows for gaming only.5 -
Windows Updates hanged up the second time now. At exact 48% both times. The loading circle doesn’t do anything, just standing there. I just don’t like Windows.8
-
if Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7 and I don't have a legit copy anyway, why is it always updating.
i boot into Windows once every 3 months to play sumn on steam or just remind myself of the suffering that I once knew, and there's always all these updates.4 -
Fuck Android Studio updates. Why you morons call it a "STABLE" update when its clearly not? -_-
You guys ruined the layout editor -_- But you guys also left no way to use the older version nowadays.
Fuck you Google!!!
FUCK!!!6 -
You are like Windows updates personified.
Annoying, persistent...
And I want to punch you in the face. -
Why when I actually tell windows to update does it take an hour+ to find the new version, but every time you boot it finds 100s instantly 😕2
-
I have stopped Windows updates in my laptop. But no windows has to do some shit in order to maintain its reputation. Every 10 min I get this pop up.9
-
No I don't want your updates every single day, Windows 10. Maybe I don't want to be so edgy with your updates. May be I like it XP style when updates didn't used to bug me with every single boot up and power down. It has become even worse. Who thought defering updates to the next boot up was a good option? It fucking interferes with the flow of work. They were like -
"You know what, let's update till 35% and then fucking update the remaining 65% at next boot"
"But users will be frustated"
"We'll show the update screen with clean font and a nice background. It will calm them down"
"Okay, so let users choose when to download the updates"
"That's not a fucking option, mate"
And if you are going to force updates down our throats please fucking mention what is being changed as a short description instead of showing a 'KBxxxxxxx' update number! If not that, at least hyperlink the thing to your update docs page! OR Mention a version buff if not it! I HATE seeing 'Update for Windows 10 Version xxxx for x64-based Systems' EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I see an update ready to be downloaded.
And no I don't play Candy Crush, or other games that are pre-installed as soon as I re-install fresh Windows or go on Xbox App. I hate to do this ritual of turning off auto download from Windows Store every time. So please don't pre-configure anything for me. Keep it fucking raw. That's why Linux distros win.
I'm just saying, Service Packs were a great thing with a need of little improvements. You guys ruined the whole experience, Microsoft.2 -
Man, i hate these Windows 10 updates. Can't even boot up system properly anymore. Over an hour and half wasted with failed update installation EVERY SINGLE TIME!!
Happening 3rd time just today!
Why tf you trying to install update if its gonna fail?!!
I wish I could stop getting Windows 10 updates forever. Guys, Any ideas to block updates other than switching to linux?..6 -
Another day in the office to fix windows updates.
Love when a multi-national company is not even able to do a proper update system... Thank you Microsoft! Because of your incompetence i have a lot of work!2 -
You know that experience when you update a modern desktop app that uses a zillion abstraction layers and the first time you do anything it freezes for a little bit while the heavily deferred metaprogramming and asset transformations are executed and cached?
I always imagine polystyrene balls flying all over the place.1 -
I started up my pc and thought by myself lets build an android app and try to teach myself some new skills in android.
*Starts up android studio*
Hi user, i got 116 package updates for you enjoy!

Battle of titans:
Me vs Windows Update.
No, this time not about automatic restarts interrupting my work because I've postponed "important" updates for far too long.
Well, technically I lied.
Last evening windows force rebooted to install updates. OK then, I'll go home. This morning I saw windows update frozen at some percentage.
This evening I've got 3 forced restarts in 5 minutes. Only notepad++ with an opened and unsaved document saved my life.
Apparently, windows update follows a simple logic:
if(user.IsUsingComputer && lastUpgradeAttempt.HasFailedWithTotalFreeze && versionUpgrade.CanInstallOnlyWithFreshWindowsInstallation)
{
update();
}
Seriosly. Why am I forced to install an update only to see it lock up the entire computer and rollback after I intervene? Last time I had this issue only reinstalling windows helped, which costs about 2 days. Excluding one day to try suggested solutions, remove drivers, av scanner, etc.
Is it really that hard to implement logic like:
If(lastUpdateAttempt.HasFuckedUp)
{
windowsUpdate.FuckOff();
}4 -
So, this morning was crazy.
I had the Service Desk, first ticket of the day: A notification for Updates in Windows 10 from a concerned co-worker who hasn't seen this.
We distribute our updates with a WSUS and install them automatically and haven't approved any of the creators and fall creators updates.
After checking I saws that the client had the Creators Update already installed!
This means, this Client ignored our WSUS Updates and installed direct from Microsoft!
MICROSOFT YOU MAKE ME MAD!!! -
I have dual-boot Windows and Linux and use Windows just for gaming. After a hard day's work, I'm like "Let's relax by playing Witcher 3 for a couple of hours". So, I restart, select Windows and guess what? Updates... Mother. Fucking. Updates...😭😭😭5
-
<rant class="sysadmin">
Fuck you windows, haven't touched my PC in 2 months and I boot it first had to restore basic functions after that a Windows update came that broke everything in Windows, now I'm learning PowerShell to fix my broken windows and to install updates in the hope I get a working installation back. -
When yo wake up in the morning and you read:

Close the blog.

Why is it that one loading screen/bar is so taunting... but several on various devices, simultaneously puts my mind at ease?
...or is it just me?
I don't mean the ominous, never fully complete, rotating circle shit... that's annoying with 1 instance and exponentially worse in multiples.
Seriously, those circle indicators (several varieties) genuinely make me want to... do things that shouldn't be mentioned cuz that'd solidify the case of premeditated.
I also enjoy my servers' preboot output, mass linux updates and generally any script output dialogs... it's like confirmation that everything is doing/where as it should.5 -
I just love antergos, haven't updated in like a month, because wasn't using my laptop as much, booted it up, ~200 package updates, it failed because one file needed to be deleted as per announcements (I now subbed to those) and all updates cleanly went through.
Last time I didn't update a week on arch, it broke ~6 core packages and my dm, never thought I'd be on a pretty much arch release, but without the actual bleeding edge issues. -
Fucking windows updates...
Went to do a job on a tank in 18 deg F Weather with snow on the ground. One guy brought an ice fishing tent (very nice). This is next to petroleum tank. We got guys on top of tank waiting for me to get data using a Windows 10 lappy.
Lappy comes up and tries to get into bios to do a firmware update. WTF! I reboot and it does it again! Go to look for power adapter as it wont do update without power. Not in bag. It has to have power to do update.
So I drive back to shop (with guys waiting on top of tank) which is 5 miles away. I am pissed. Its snowing and I have to drive slow. I find that adapter. I get back to the tank and plug it in. The AC source (battery based) starts alarming as the lappy takes too much power. Fuck! But somehow it boots Windows without doing firmware update. Fuck you Windows!
I get my job done, but don't fucking trust windows at all. Had this been a field tech he would be pissing his pants. Useless shitty software you have zero control over. Now considering changing their OS to Linux for field work. I am rewriting their software anyway with something can run Windows or Linux.4 -
Looks like window updates will be faster. Windows Updates Are Set to Get Less Annoying http://makeuseof.com/tag/...
-
When depression is hovering your back, it sucks when a potentially project breaking API update from a third party appears with shiny new features and your team glamour that we should implement it soon, but internally you scream that will break so much stuff and clients will be mad at you

I just witnessed Microsoft trolling preview setup.
Let me set the scene for you. I was in Visual Studio and saw the notifications and I had a minute so I decided to check them and saw there were updates, this one being one of them. I went to update and first it asked me to close all instances of VS. Fair enough, I close VS and continue. Instead of taking a minute at most to install it took ~10 minutes which is insane, but fine, I stopped my work for it... And then I'm greeted by this gem. Restart your computer for freaking .NET core and trolling.. I'm sorry, tooling... Preview... What the actual fuck Microsoft?2 -
Opening your inbox in anticipation of updates on projects you're watching and instead receiving privacy policy updates

Me always: never installing MacOS updates because something always breaks
Mac always: Updates available! Install now??
Me today: *installs MacOS updates*
Mac today: *refuses to boot*6 -
I've avoided installing updates on my Linux installation for too long and now I'm afraid of clicking on the "Install Updates Now" button.
Help.12 -
I seldomly use Windows and whenever I open it either it wants to restart after installing updates or it takes 2 hr to restart becuase it was updated last time.2
-
It's the third time in two weeks that I've updated something and caused it to break. Different packages and different projects each time. Each time I've updated at night and tested it and made sure everything was okay only to be woken up in the morning by complaining customers and a newfound bug. Better lay off the updates for now.5
-
One of the best things about linux is the ease with which you can update packages, just sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. None of that stupid installer which downloads an updater which updates the program shit.
-
wtf devs, you working hard to make updates and then complaining other apps doing same thing: making themself better. wtf?1
-
I'm curious about what you guys think of giving percentage updates. Like we have an x project, there are i, j, k things to do and you're asked to give percentage completed on the sub tasks. I feel like we're generally bad at estimating, now you have to consider the weight of each sub-sub tasks and I feel like when you give a percentage update, project managers and clients will eventually ask you "why is the 20% of work not done yet". I feel like it makes the work look a lot easier than it is.8
-
Why do updates always say "About" (Windows, Linux and Android also) about the remaining time? Is it because they are having their yoga lession at the time and we are interrupting them or something? Are we actually waiting for m to take their tea? A simple, "Please wait" would suffice I guess...2

Some updates:
> Going to get another paper published (hopefully) once my exams end
> Got a intern, not a lot of money, ₹2L≈$2.6k per month for 2.5 months
> Will get a Mac from company for the intern(probably not new, and most likely will be taken back soon after the internship)
> Planning on entrepreneurship after getting a degree
Ohh and the rant:
1. Fucking sent me a 2 page list of links as "pre reads for internship" during my exams -- and intern will start soon after exams
2. Have missed 3 paper submission deadlines till now, hopefully will run more experiments on time this time and finally get that paper submitted (on 15th May) -
After upgrading to kubelet 1.24 kubernetes won't even start. Complains about an unrecognized flag "--network-plugin=cni". And stackoverflow has nothing to offer to work around it.
God I hate backwards-incompatible software updates. Esp w/o vendor's scripts automatically porting old version configs to match the new configuration convention.
Now I have to learn all about something big, called dockershim.
Fuck! I so don't want to spend my whole day on this...
It's not very linuxish to push breaking updates w/o any bpo mechanism, esp for a software that's a part of the linux foundation :|15 -
Me: *spends 5 hours troubleshooting updates across 2 days*
Coworker: oh yeah, I submitted a ticket for that a couple weeks ago. Just run that specific part manually.
Thanks friend. -
Android studio kept nagging on me to update to v3.3.1 for a month, upgraded yesterday, and today it wants to upgrade to 3.3.2 T_T
Irony at its best lol -
Windows updates is a huge bitch.
Gotta do some tests on a code, it's already past 5 pm, bit in a rush. But windows updates said no.
Huge fuck you!3 -
Why the hell is everyone so obsessed with app updates? Don't you service your applications? They're just Devs making increments to their product!2
-
Everyday, m opening devrant and would see a new UI UPDATE.
My fingers go to click a tab and realises it's not there.. and takes some time to search where it went.
Devrant on revolution..!!! -
Oh for fucks sake!
Suddenly I couldn't use my mic. Windows is always a bit retarded, so I decide to restart. Ofcourse Windows FORCES me to install their shitty upgrades ("We have installed: Killer Control Center - check it out!" (Like hell I will!!)). This takes 5 min, which is usually not a lot of time, BUT I'M SUPPOSED TO BE IN A VOICE-MEETING DAMNIT!
Windows shaped up. Every thing works.
2 hours later: "We have an update for you, we will restart outside of active hours". WHAT?! NO! That means I can't leave my work up on my computer because I can't trust my fucking OS to not throw away my work! And also YOU JUST UPDATED YOURSELF WINDOWS!!!! HOW DO I TELL YOU TO PERFORM ALL UPDATES AND NEVER EVER RESTART WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!!!3 -
I use Microsoft Word like once a month. Every time I open Word there is an update to all of the Office Apps. And the update take like half an hour to complete.
I usually like updates and install them, because I hope that the new version maybe patches a bug or makes the software more efficient, but unspecified updates that often is frustrating.1 -
Recently many of us may have seen that viral image of a BSOD in a Ford car, saying the vehicle cannot be driven due to an update failure.
I haven't been able to verify the story in established news sources, so I won't be further commenting on it, specifically.
But the prospects of the very concept are quite... concerning.
Deploying updates and patches to software can be reasonably called *the software industry*. We almost have no V0 software in production nowadays, anywhere (except for some types of firmware).
Thus, as car and other devices become more and more reliant on larger software rather than much shorter onboard firmware, infrastructure for online updates becomes mandatory.
And large scale, major updates for deployed software on many different runtime environments can be messy even on the most stable situations and connections (even k8s makes available rolling updates with tests on cloud infrastructure, so the whole thing won't come crashing down).
Thereby, an update mess on automotive-OS software is a given, we just have to wait for it.
When it comes... it will be a mess. Auto manufacturers will adopt a "move fast and break things" approach, because those who don't will appear to be outcompeted by those who deploy lots of shiny things, very often.
It will lead to mass outages on otherwise dependable transportation - private transportation.
Car owners, the demographic that most strongly overlaps with every other powerful demographic, will put significant pressure on governments to do something about it.
Governments (and I might be wrong here) will likely adapt existing recall implementation laws to apply to automotive OS software updates.
That means having to go to the auto shop every time there is a software update.
If Windows may be used as a reference for update frequency, that means several times per day.
A more reasonable expectation would be once per month.
Still completely impossible for large groups of rural car owners.
That means industry instability due to regulation and shifting demographics, and that could as well affect the rest of the software industry (because laws are pesky like that, rules that apply to cars could easily be used to reign in cloud computing software).
Thus... Please, someone tells me I overlooked something or that I am underestimating the adaptability of the powers at play, because it seems like a storm is on the horizon, straight ahead.5 -
Facking Windows updates! If I tell you to "shut down and do the facking updates" end quote, I mean now! Not the next time when booting up.
Morherf. Still waiting. It even says "This will take a while". Uggh4 -
what is wrong with Firefox? Just within the last 7 days, I got probably 5+ updates. Its like every other day firefox gets an update! & most updates keep breaking things. Ublock origin used to work perfectly, now that keeps on breaking. Other extensions became buggy! Whats wrong with firefox? -_-
-
I don't know what it is checking for 30min after downloading all fucking updates. I just wanted to upgrade my pc to windows 10 but this never ending "checking for updates" is running.5
-
I was wondering Microsoft deliberately made Windows 10 shitty so that users are forced to download them updates. Why would anyone do that? I don't know.3
-
Windows apparently does reboots for updates n stuff outside your normal time of usage nowadays.
Windows apparently also thinks that your normal usage shouldn't be over 12 hours.
So now i have to decide if I'm more in the mood for random updates in the morning when i need to get shit done (ugh) or at night when i have finally time to relax. -
Is it weird that my windows 10 never updates? If not, it's pretty annoying to see the same "windows 10 updates" rant posted by different people who don't even use windows.2
-
Nowadays, regretting has become more common for me after any update!
(New #Sublime update broke my previously working bitbake plugin!) -
I am hearing reports from less computer savvy people that some Apple devices will refuse to charge the battery if updates are not applied. Supposedly as a way to strong arm users to update. I cannot find anything on this when searching.
Has anyone heard of this?8 -
Me and windows 10 updates!joke/meme windows10 update windows 10 updates windows windows update windows 10 sucks windows 10 windows10 winupdate

How do you release your software to customers? I am interested which software, tools and methods assist you with releasing new updates to your customers?
We are distributing our programs and scripts in a zip, and most customers distribute it on their terminal servers.2 -
Google: "Your update is now live"
Me: "Excellent! Time to start working on that new feature. I guess it wouldn't hurt to make sure the new live update is working fine"
*uses new update*
*realises I have to fix something in the new live update* -
Don't get me started at Win Updates. I know it is old school but I recently installed win 7 and I realized that updates work in a terribly f***ed up way.
Stuck at "checking for updates". OMG 😤 After quite some research I managed to get passed this step by manually downloading and installing an update that fixed the issue.
Why oh why? 😰2 -
Think I'm being punished here...
first, the windows 10 update screen showed up... waited for that shit to finish... once finished, I thought, "that wasn't bad..." Then, THIS next screen shows up... "you've got to be kidding me!" So, it's punishment for not having opened the laptop in a while. :P
Yeah, it will be a wish come true, when Microsoft figures out how to do all this in the background... or something... so it's not painful to wait for updates to complete.
End of rant for the day.2 -

The amount of times I've had to stare at a "Getting Windows ready" screen when I want to get work done is driving me insane. The amount of times I've wondered why my pc is slowing down to a crawl just to find out that damn installer worker is claiming my cpu or the update module is using my network to download updates.Windows 10 is a cancer on systems that do not have spare resources. -
There are 49 security updates for Windows on my system this morning. Almost all for Office. Forty nine! That's just nuts. I just updated it yesterday. I hope I don't have to reboot 49 times.3
-
Finally updated our servers from Debian 7 + Django 1.11 to Debian 10 + Django 3.1 because "shipping new products is more important than updates" 🙄
Can it be weekend now please?1 -
So few days ago I've installed Mojave from clean setup (Hackintohsh) and works smooth as butter, and today I woke up in the morning and sat down to work, my pc was running on windows so I restarted it, there was some updates to be installed but what a heal will install them later, so the pc started booting in Mojave, usually takes few seconds but this time it got stuck on the loading screen, so rebooted again and this time added -v boot parameter to clover to see whats going on, got some errors about IGPU (had to use intel's gpu.. thanks Nvidia .!.), did few googling some suggested using -disablegfxfirmware but that didn't work, so rebooted again.. hoping I would get more info, guess what? windows 10 was in hibernation (possibly because there were updates to be installed on boot) and that somehow prevented mojave from using the ssd i guess? not sure exactly, so In the end I got very lucky cause if I didn't read the message I would have reinstalled the mojave and loose a day at work... politely f*** you windows updates!
-
What's the point of having a 'Check for updates' if it doesn't tell you there is a security update? And why do I always have to download and install updates manually?
-
Hi Guys,
Any idea about sites or Apps for web development news and updates?
It's annoying when you're in web development field and feel like you're the last one / late to know about latest updates.2 -
An underestimated security threat are developers who betray their users by making software less useful with updates, discouraging users from installing updates again.
https://chromestory.com/2019/07/...3 -
I hate it when I postpone the updates till i finish my current part of the project and then after an hour of installing the updates, windows takes another hour undoing it! And am setting there doing nothing..
-
Has anyone else noticed a trend this summer of os updates completely shafting servers? Just saved my 5th prod server and its getting fucking old
-
So, I am in the last stages of development of a really big project and I need to figure out a way to package future patches and updates for the client in order for them to manually update the project on prod server.
For reasons I cannot specify here, they will not use any automated process, and we need to provide regular patches and updates for the next year.
So I was thinking of using git archive to package changed files from our repo for every new commit, or series of commits, and just give them that, along with any database schema updates as sql files (again, no automation can be used).
We are talking about a large PHP + MySQL app, and cannot use automated deployment strategies.
I feel there must be a better way to do this, but this is the best I could come up with so far.
What do you people think?
Any ideeas?
