Manager: How come I go on vacation for 2 weeks and you are able to start, complete, and ship an entire sprint in that time where as when I'm around, the same amount of work takes months? I even got COMPLIMENTS from *the client* about how smoothly things went while I was gone...THIS IS COMPLETELY EMBARRASSING AND UNACCEPTABLE!
Dev: Well. I cancelled all of the status meetings, created tickets with clear expectations, didn't change those expectations, didn't add every idea that popped into the client's head during those two weeks to the current sprint, didn't pull anyone off their tickets to teach me to code, cut the budget for making degrading comments to zero, and incentivised everyone to work by allowing a half days on fridays to work on personal projects if we stayed on schedule.
Manager: THAT'S NOT YOUR JOB! I'M THE MANAGER AND ALL. OF. THOSE. THINGS. ARE. MY JOB! NOT YOURS!
Dev: ...I know.16 -

Dear game developers of mobile games,
Please stop making EVERY FUCKING GAME dependent on having coins AND gems that you have to pay REAL MONEY for to oftentimes even keep playing! Or worse still you are kept at a basic level if you refuse to spend!
It’s boring, annoying, and your game is not worth spending like $100 on before getting bored and moving on.
And don’t get me started on ads!!
FUCK RIGHT OFF!!!16 -
my old CS professor disliked us using modern “heavy” languages instead of C for “trivial” tasks. He used to say “don’t whip your python out without a reason” ☝️13

what would you guys say is the archetypal functional language, the one we should pick to learn functional programming?3

Just my opinion, but a software dev job shouldn't be stressful for 9+ months of a year.
I understand sometimes the company wants to launch a product on a deadline, so people have to do extra time at work.
Or an urgent bug fix is needed on the system which requires someone to put in overtime.
But a stressful job for all 12 months of a year is just not worth it, whatever the salary may be.
What do you think?7 -
EDIT: devRant April Fools joke (2021)
-------------------------
Hey everyone,
@trogus and I are happy to make an exciting announcement. With the rapidly increasing success of NFTs, we've decided the devRant community shouldn't miss out on this compelling new paradigm for user-generated content. So, we will soon be offering all rants as NFTs at auction.
To kick things off, we're going to first be offering the first ever rant posted to devRant (https://devrant.com/rants/489/...) at auction for a starting price equivelent to $100,000 USD. We think this is a fair starting price for such a significant piece of devRant history, and we anticipate the final sale price to be significantly higher.
We look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on this new direction for the devRant community, and we can't wait to see the Rant NFT market take off!
Sincerely,
@dfox & @trogus30 -
Hi everyone,
Over the last couple of days we experienced an issue posting images on devRant posts and comments. This issue should now be fixed.
Apologies for the delay, it to address, it took some digging and we had some alerting that failed that would have helped quickly identify the source of the issue, but unfortunately that part of the alerting wasn't working as expected.
Despite the issue being fixed, there is a bit of additional maintenance that will take place to prevent it from occurring in the future. There could be a couple of minutes of downtime today, March 13 at around 10pm EST, but I'm hoping that can be avoided. I will update in the comments on this rant.
Lastly, and unrelated to this issue, an academic research team has been working on a project involving devRant/types of content posted, and would appreciate feedback and help with a short survey they put together for anyone who is interested: https://devrant.com/rants/3923796/...
Thank you again for the patience and feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
p.s. attached is a relevant meme, according to some people, who thought/hoped this was a feature :)18 -
Devrant should have a feature to unsubscribe notifications on a rant + notifications should say from which rant it came from. These would be much appreciated improvements.8

If you see someone ranting about a colleague who made a semi-major fuckup which was not recognised during dev and stage testing and made it to production where it was discovered three days after deployment just when he went on holiday, well, that colleague was me.3

The Dragon book has arrived
Yup some folks don’t like it some stuff is missing and it’s not presented in a different way but it’s still the compiler book of compiler books5 -
Yo gods of devRant
Can you keep this as a feature? As a switch or something perhaps? This pixelated avatar is sick!5
