Technically it ain't wrong

Was informed yesterday that I will be promoted in the coming weeks. Yay!
3rd promotion in 3 years working here (first job after graduating). Time to celebrate 🎉🎊

3 time sheets: One for the company I work for, one for the parent company staffing us to clients, one for the client.
All three have to be handed in at different times, have different rules, are on different systems and have to fit hourwise.
A waste of hours per week.
And add an offshore team that checks all 3 to this.
Also once in a while they complain about something in it. (Audits, reviews,etc.) Forward to boss, he has to argue with them.
Waste of so much time.

A year ago I posted on here that I had been working on a game using xamarin for 2 years as a hobby project. Back then you guys encouraged me to publish it.

Many years ago I helped her create a Facebook account. As it happens with most older people, she started sharing false news that she saw on her network.
So I taught her how to verify. Reverse image search. To google it and if no real news site talked about it, it was fake.
Anyway, she listened and started learning.
Now she is telling people when they are posting something untrue and I even taught her how to report false news posts.

Yesterday all management was sick or away on vacation or training.
All work continued as normal. Everyone is an adult and knows what to do.
Made me question if we actually need to have soooo many people in management positions.
Funny to think that they get paid more.
Ironically when a developer is sick, real money is lost and progress stops in a particular area.

Heard a CEO say at a conference that they hire the most competent candidate. Unless there is a woman in the candidates. Then they hire the woman.
That seems pretty sexist to me.

A few years ago I had a startup. I invited 2 friends to join and we split the ownership equally. I did most the work but didn't mind. I had fun. Anyway, the story is not about me. I was in a startup incubator.
There was this stereotypical rich kid in the incubator too.
For the first few months he refused to even share what his idea was.
Finally he was forced to do it. It was an app for storing gift cards. Literally, there were startups for some high tech phd genious types. But the guy with the idea of a gift card app didn't want to share in fear that we would steal his mediocre idea.
His idea was to digitalize physical gift cards without the consent of the companies and make a market for selling, buying and trading (and taking a fee). When asked what if the companies refuse to accept the unofficial digital gift card, he said he had talked to a lawyer that they should accept it or he would sue them. Wow.
There was a guy who had attempted at doing an app like that 2 years before too apparently.
So here comes the part about the work culture.
He convinced 3 or 4 computer science students to develop the app for him. He offered them 1%, no pay. Talking about how rich they would get and how big it would be.
Luckily, one of the developers came to his senses after a few weeks and convinced the others that they were worth much more.
The guy was furious and even threatened to sue them.
He even got like 2-3k USD from some of his parents rich friends to develop the app. He could afford to pay them.
Anyway, the app was never completed.

I have many stories like that from other startups. A lot of students getting ripped off to work for free. I know people who have startups going for years thanks to free labor.

I feel a bit ashamed posting this, compared to some of the amazing things you guys have built.

Story:
It was back around new years 2014-2015. I bought a charango and started playing some gigs. I carried around a book with chords. I thought it was a bit annoying to have to take it with me. Looked for an app and there wasn't any (today there are 2-3 other). So I decided to make an app.
Bare in mind that I had just a bit of experience with C from university. No OOP. So I went on youtube and started watching some tutorials while I developed it. Learned by trying. Trial and error.
After around 2-3 months of working on it every day after class until going to sleep, it was ready.
I decided to put it on play store for other people to use. Turns out there was a need. I got 10,000 downloads in less than half a year (it is quite a niche, so unexpected). Since then it has stayed around 6000 installs on active devices.
It is my biggest personal project success.
Since then, I have continued making apps in my free time, getting better and more professional. But none has come even close to that ones popularity. My plan is that to mark the 5th anniversary, I am working on a v2.0 (complete rewrite) with new features and instruments.
Sorry about tl;dr

I spend around 50% of work time on personal projects.

Anyone that ever experienced that a personal/hobby project (side to work/school) became successful?
How successful? Did it beco.e your main job?
Was it mostly luck or a lot of hard work?
Curious to hear peoples stories and how common it is.

What are some good android developer communities? Looking for somewhere to learn and ask questions that might not be code related, so can't be on stack overflow. What do you use? I use android for hobby projects only.

I have been working on an android game in my free time as a hobby. It has been 2 years, so I have decided to finally put it up in play store (maybe as alpha or beta). If there is interest I might keep working on it. Any advice? It is the first time I make a game and I am completely green in regards to publishing it and things to take into account.

I'm forced to open-source all code from my masters thesis as my professor was planning on stealing everything to use as his own.
