This dev world is still so damn fucking sexist, it's driving me nuts.
"it's so cool seing a GIRL doing this stuff"
"wow you're so tech savy for a GIRL"
"you're too CUTE to be a developer"
"how does it feel to be a GIRL in dev"
Just treat us like fucking human beings for once instead of pretty, empty objects.91 -
Not mine, found this on Reddit, still a good read
========
I work in IT as a lead developer, as in I run the department. One of my team leads is female, let's call her Ripley. She is young, smart, and a great dev.
Today she met with a new customer to discuss a big project. Project management sent a male project manager (Hicks).
It started perfectly with Customer asking Ripley for coffee. He's informed about her status and mutters something like an apology. He is visibly unhappy.
He then proceeds to ask Hicks technical questions despite having been told that Ripley will answer all the technical stuff. Ripley tries to answer questions. Customer ignores Ripley and continues talking to Hicks.
Hicks tells him politely that Ripley is the one to talk to, since he is not a dev and unable to help him. Ripley tries again to explain stuff.
Customer gets angry and demands another developer, since Ripley is "obviously far too young for a project of this complexity". Ripley rolls her eyes and leaves. Not the first time this happens.
Hicks smoothes the waves and tells the customer that the senior lead developer will personally answer all his questions. Customer is satisfied.
I walk in and calmly introduce myself.
The customer - now far less satisfied - was forced to discuss all his questions with yours truly, the 47 year old female IT nerd. I was very professional, friendly, and businesslike, he was visibly uncomfortable and irritated by the situation.
It's petty and stupid, but man, it felt great watching his face fall when I entered. I've been in Ripley's shoes far too often and today I heard 23 old me cheering me on.
Ripley loved it as well. She made sure to smile extra brightly at customer when she walked past the meeting room on her way to the coffee machine.

Heard a CEO say at a conference that they hire the most competent candidate. Unless there is a woman in the candidates. Then they hire the woman.
That seems pretty sexist to me.60 -
Is devRant Just for rants?
I see such a Great community here that goes way beyond complaining about PMs and users (even though you're all right, usually). I've read comments about support for depression, Anxiety, people being supportive of woman and downvoting/commenting against the common sexism that we see on the internet every single day. We have fun, we all feel like friends even though we can remember only a few names and stumble uppon them once in a while. We mostly understand each other and it all feels like a huge family. It's a Great thing to help throughout all of the struggles I have daily in Life, and I bet many people here feel the same.
Thank you all so much for making devRant this Great community. Papa bless.13 -
Root interviews for a job
So I've been interviewing for fun lately (and for practice), and it's been going mostly well. This one company in particular looks interesting, and they seem to really like me. This morning was interview #4 with them; tomorrow morning is #5.
The previous interviews were pretty enjoyable, especially the last one where I interviewed with one of the senior devs who gave me his "grumpy old man rails quiz." He actually asked some questions I wasn't able to answer! (Mostly dealing with Rails' internals.) Also when showing me the codebase, there were a few things I hadn't seen before, so it's exciting that I'll actually be able to learn something if I sign on. We ended up talking for almost an hour past our allotted time, and we got along famously. He said he was very surprised I did so well on his quiz because most people don't. Everyone else I interviewed with so far has liked me and gave positive reviews, too.
I don't know if I want the job, but that's beyond the scope of this rant anyway. The real reason for this comes next.
My interview today was with the VP of engineering. It was more of a monologue, as he wanted to give me perspective to see if I actually wanted to work there, but it was still very much a monologue. He's an old white guy who seems to loves to drone, and he never seemed very happy when I responded, so I let him drone and drone. Good information though.
But he's very set in his ways in some regards, and two of them were pretty insulting. We never really talked about technicals, and he just assumed that since I wasn't old and graying that I was a junior dev. He said, and I'll quote: "We run a lean but senior team, so we typically only hire senior devs here. But the dev team is all old white men. There's no diversity in talent, age, sex, race, religion, etc, and I'm looking to change that." He made several more allusions to my more junior level, too. He made a lot of assumptions (like how I'm not comfortable with structure because I've been the only dev so often) and got annoyed when I countered them.
I realize he has no idea of my skill level -- even though he should if he was listening to his team -- but to just assume that I'm not talented because I'm young, and bloody hire me just because I'm female? I don't want to be your diversity hire, old man. 🤬
So I'm feeling angry.
I might still take the job because the it offers considerable benefits over where I'm working (despite being quite happy here), but it will absolutely be despite him.rant i don't want to leave my job sexism but i want to leave the desert and the two are married ageism am i really going to tag this ageism? guess so 🙁 diversity hire interview33 -
With all of this Microsoft blacklist and master bullshit, I wonder when will someone protest for git push/pull to be changed due to sexism 🙄🙄🙄7

Dear IT world,
As long as it still happens that women who attend IT lectures are referred to as "visual upgrades" by the lecturer after class, then nobody needs to wonder why IT isn't considered a welcoming field for women to work in, for many women.
Sincerely, a dev who loves code but is done with sexist bullshit.139 -
In an alternate universe, devs live in their own country.
They make their own rules and dictate how much they are paid. They maintain the entire world’s infrastructure.
They don’t go to work, since their entire country is the workplace and guess what? Cold beers are free(a thank you from the beer company guys for coming up with all their inventory management systems)
Pizza is free too.
There is no government (laws are passed depending on upvotes on devRant )
No racism, sexism or any other ism ending words . Devs just code.
Oh, and the state police, preferably known as keyboard warriors patrol the streets and offenders are punished by limited internet speeds. 😂. It is said some actually commit suicide because of this unbearable punishment.
Fuck yeah they have coffee farms. That’s the only thing they don’t accept as *gratitude from other nations because those sons of bitches might fuck that up too.
And everyone drives teslas 😂
Okay I have to get back to work now. That multi universe travel machine won’t buy itself.15 -
There's this weird thing I am noticing since few years and I don't know if it's just me.
I have noticed that companies are becoming outright sexist, hiring women very incapable of doing anything in tech industry, even for the roles of software developers (My friends were asked questions like, 'Do you think you will be able to perform at this job?' Or, 'What have you worked on at previous job?' and similar questions where it really doesn't require much of a brain to come up with something good). And they got hired!
Where as I remember slogging 4-5 interviews including 2 live coding sessions and rigorous technical interviews at multiple places only to know I have been rejected because I couldn't answer some of those really lame technical questions which aren't even needed in daily life. It didn't matter if I had developed multiple apps that are used by some people over the internet. or the academic record where I was in top 5% every year. Or my side projects for that matter.
It sucks to see this kind of sexism against men! It boils my blood, but yeah, women participation in workplace is very low, so you gotta hire them! (-_-) and I feel only people who will struggle are ugly males.
Call me anything you want, but you have to face this to know this is happening. Especially in Indian tech industry.14 -

!!politics (kinda)
Here’s a gem from our recent harassment and diversity training at work:
Speaker: “All of these things are protected from discrimination in California! Wow! It’s a huge list, isn’t it? Now let me ask you a question: is a single white male under 40 protected?”
Everyone: *crickets*
Fucking really?
After immediately jumping on all of the other speaker’s questions, you can’t answer this one?
And later, here’s another gem:
Speaker: “If you witness an employee harassing another employee outside of work and work hours, completely unrelated to work, should you report it? What if you ask the person being harassed and she says no?”
Speaker: “Always report it! While it’s not *technically* required by law, you must report it! Why? Because you have the same protections she would! And maybe it’s easier for you to say something than for her.” (Surprise gendering was her own addition)
Fair on that last point, but against the person’s wishes? Totally not cool. Maybe it wasn’t harassment, or you don’t know the situation. Heads up: you probably don’t. Or maybe it wasn’t a big deal at all, but you think it’s earth-shattering. But all that reporting it against someone’s wishes does is create drama and possibly legal trouble. And if it wasn’t harassment or the case goes poorly, you just created enemies for yourself, or for one or both of them if you’re reporting it anonymously, and possibly even ruined one or both of their jobs/careers by doing so. Good fucking job, asshole.
Snitches get stitches.18 -
Girls: do you find that most men in our work are sexist?
A flamewar in a Mozilla bug report brought me to this article: https://notapattern.net/2014/10/...
I believe that most of the points are ridiculous, and I know I'll probably get downvoted for this, but I'd really like to hear some woman's honest opinion.39 -
Your daddy Johnny is pissed off again.
My therapist advised me to do some things for myself after I told her that I'm finding the simplest tasks overwhelming again. This is after a month of studying, coding, and working on some personal projects on my free time. I thought "Fine, I'll buy new clothes since I have very few of them and also get a massage."
But guess what these activities involved? People. I went to the mall and some attention-seekers yell at a high-pitched tone when their dumbass friend taps them on the shoulder. Then goes the screaming match "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH" because they saw their friends. OMG. FRIENDSHIP! So exciting! Let's scream in public for absolutely no fucking reason because it feels so damn good when everyone turns around to look at our ugly asses.
I went to a shop and two women are talking in the most annoying fucking made-up accent I've ever heard. If you want to know, social distancing is no more than a suggestion at this point. I go to the fitting room and same women are talking loudly in that curly, rich-wannabe, bitch accent. "Emergeeeeeeerd, you lost so much weiiiight!" Then another ugly fuck man joins them and they start screaming flirtatiously, "Emergeeeeeeeerd, why are you heyyre?! Geit outttttuh! Ugh." In my head, "My pussesyyyy is so wet rightt now and my labia flaps are as green as my haeeirrrr!"
I tried to finish the day off by having some tiramisu pancake in this Japanese shop, to make up with the stress of having to co-exist with these people. Two girls sat at the table near me and started talking loudly again but some dumbass gossip. There is no way not to hear the shit they're talking about. I thought about wearing a headset but then I'd hear myself chew. Classic gossip about some other girl they know being a slut and some guy they know who is cheating on his girlfriend plus the casual sexism, "He doesn't know 'cause he's a guy." Non-stop "he's just a guy" bullshit.
I didn't finish my meal, went home, and decided that I should stick to online shopping and food deliveries. I know it's considered healthier to get out every now and then but not in this fucking country. Then I went to go get that massage in my favorite massage place. Guess fucking what? Two couples went in and started chatting and laughing loudly. Keep in mind, there are signs everywhere "Please observe silence" and it's a fucking massage place where people go to relax in peace with just the relaxing music.
Again, another set of stupid goddam gossip that just can't wait for a fucking hour. Even my therapist got pissed up and started shushing them. She did that three times and they started whispering but you can still hear it. Fucking hell, you bitches can't keep your mouth shut for a fucking minute. You have nothing of importance to say and you just ruin everyone's day. You are inconsiderate and you're all a bunch of uncivilized fuckwits.
How fucking ironic that these activities that are supposed to relax me just reminded me of the reason I was burning myself out in the first place and why I hate, hate, absolutely hate going out or doing anything that involves people.
Fuck you all. I'll get a massage at home. I'll fucking do everything at home. I can't stand you annoying fucks.24 -
I'm tired of women who tell they don't like to work with women! You're not going to become a better dev by imitating a sexist grandpa. Men won't like you more: event if they didn't like women either, you're still a female... And other women will just try to avoid working with you. Why would I bother to work with someone who judges me before we even start?! 🙄5
-
When you tell people you're a computer science major and they tell you you should get an education degree as well, because "our nation's children need to learn how to code." Which is fine, but no one tells my male peers they should become teachers instead of working in industry. Just saying. Doesn't make me mad, I just think it's funny16

!dev but definitely rant
Here's a fucking thought:
How is holding women over different standards at events and (non-physical) competitions (hackathons especially, somehow) NOT widely considered sexist? I don't even mean towards men - yes, of course.
But also towards women: By preferring their results in some competitions in order to "support them", you implicitly degrade them to be small children in need for praise. You imply that you expect them to perform worse. By "women-first" PR bullshit, you do what you claim to be against. Fuck you.
Why can't we just hold everyone to the same fucking standards? Women can be just as good in tech as men, when interested. I would even make a point that these different standards hold back women from trying to get into any tech-related career.18 -
Sometimes I daydream about just selling out and doing the whole diversity and women who code kind of thing. Apply for the big tech companies and work my way towards becoming one of the faces of their bullshit company. I'm gonna get a long wig, tan myself brown, and wear subtle native shit like a carabao brooch or some Cheongsam-inspired work suit. And when there's a big work event or party, I'm gonna go full on White Rose from Mr Robot, smiling and shaking people's hands like I give a shit. Gonna try to look wholesome and innocent, all I really wanted was a chance to get into tech as a humble being.
I'm gonna practice a strong accent and I would tell humble stories about where I came from, that god sent me here, and about all the struggles I had getting into the field as a woman. I'm gonna step up to the podium and say shit like, "Women can do it too, we can kuh-hode!" Then I'm gonna stir up some shit like, "Why is the terminal black?" Gonna make my voice and hands shake from intense emotion (visible anger, almost crying), "Why is something that we use to do our bidding black? Are we not over the years of slavery in the past? What does a terminal represent? Slavery. You know what else is terminal? Cancer. Slavery and racism are the cancers of our society. We must stop this. Terminals should be in all colors and it shouldn't be black by default."
1. Point out a non-malicious thing and add malice to it. The more racist and sexist, the better.
2. Mention something bad that is not related to it at all.
3. Make them seem related in an attempt to make a point.
4. Fail to make a point.
5. Say "we must stop this".
I'm gonna look straight into people's eyes with a serious face while cry-laugh-cringing internally. "As a brown woman, this makes me sad. I have Kubernetes skills, you know and it hurts me." If I catch some people laughing even though I'm also about to fart from internal laughter, I will point at the whitest male of them all. "You, do you think this is funny? Because this is my life, as well as millions of other people like ME!"
Then I'm gonna curse all of the white men who obviously only got into this field through violence. Yes, Mike, I know you pointed a gun at the HR to get in. What else could it be? All you know is violence because testosterone! You don't really know Kubernetes, I do, I set it up all the time for my thousands of hello world applications and yet here you are, just walking in with your white boy genes and your guns and taking all our jobs away. "What do you have to say for yourself? Shame."
Then of course, some hardcore social media "journalists" are gonna capture this on video and people are gonna ruin whoever man I pointed out's life and say shit like, "This big white man laughed at this little brown chick while she was talking. Sexism and racism in one video. This is why tech is so toxic." I'm gonna allow myself to get caught with a boner (big plastic white bottle) and people are gonna talk about how they didn't use a real woman as the face of their women who code thing. "I admit, I was born in a body that did not align with my desires but just because I have a penis doesn't mean I can't wear a Cheongsam. Also, the fact that you're pointing this out is discrimination and I had enough of that in my life. Shame. This is why tech is so toxic. You accept black terminals but not Cheongsam dicks. Fuck you."
I'm gonna keep ranting about big bad white men while dating one. Of course, people will find this out and point it out. I would flip it and say, "See? This is the problem. You look down on people like me because you're all racist. Just because I'm brown doesn't mean I can't date someone who is white. Sexist. Just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I don't have a choice who to date."
I'll keep ranting about all the ridiculous shit, just calling people names every time they speak. Just shame them for no reason then after several years of collecting my diversity money, I'm gonna leak a porn video of me. A compilation of sucking white man dick with voice overs just saying "big bad white men" over and over again. Some really degrading porn kinda shit. "You know what else scales? My ass cluster. Yeah, baby, fill up my containers with your sweet, sweet, love juice."
God bless whoever hires me and make me the face of their company. They will be forever ruined.19 -
The number of people who responded to this with bile such as “yeah but how well” or “i bet she can only write hello world”.
Its sad that this attitude still exists in our industry. If you havent seen the story she responded by clarifying that she is on the iOS tutorial team for Raywenderlich, and has a bachelors degree with a double major in Computer Science. But she shouldnt have to explain that just because shes a woman. Are people that insecure about their knowledge that they need to resort to demeaning other peoples? for shame.15 -
Woo, rant time.
I've recently changed jobs to a new company due to a number of factors at my old job. I didn't tell my old boss (let's call him X) my expected salary, nor did I tell him which company I was going to.
However, I've been informed by someone that still works there that X has been discussing my new wage in front of everyone; he was telling everyone that I'm going to lose money by moving job and that I made a stupid decision.
I didn't leave due to money, it was due to X's inability to take constructive criticism, the constant subtle sexism of the office and just a generally bad overall feeling about the job/office going forward. Yes, I will admit that money did have a minor part in my decision to leave but I didn't verbalise that to anyone in the office, and I made X aware that my departure wasn't to do with money. I left on good terms.
I feel as though it was wrong of X to talk about his opinions on my new job in front of my ex-colleagues and friends. I don't know, maybe this is the norm and I've just been living in a cave before this, or maybe my last boss was just a bit of a douchenugget. Has anyone else had this experience?
I've got to meet up with everyone from my last place tomorrow to properly say goodbye and things.. but I'm not sure how to approach my old boss when leaving drinks are held now. Should I say anything? Should I just act as though I know nothing about it?
What would you guys do in this situation???19 -
The dev.to code of conduct is irritating.
Direct quote:
We pledge to prioritize marginalized people’s safety over privileged people’s comfort. We will not act on complaints regarding:
- ‘Reverse’ -isms, including ‘reverse racism,’ ‘reverse sexism,’ and ‘cisphobia’
...what?14 -
A coworker of mine was asked to make a utility C# app to help with our internal testing. The idea was that the app would collect data and display the results.
He decided that it was very important that the app have a command line interface. He's spent far more time building the app from scratch for the command line than he would have if he'd used C#'s built-in GUI utilities.
Today was our demo day and he shows an internal command-line app in 2017 built in C#. I asked about the GUI and he said that the command line functionality was more important. I suggested that it was maybe less user-friendly and he proceeded to explain to me how "non-technical" people might prefer a GUI, but clearly any serious developer would just want a command line app.
I feel like, in one fell swoop, he trivialized my suggestion, didn't address any of the data visualization needs, and suggested I wasn't a "real developer". Am I right to feel a little outraged by this?5 -
The spokesman of an international corporate published a LinkedIn post about why people should work for this company.
Clause 1 was: "Here you get almost 3 monthly salaries as bonus. My wife loves it!"
Right, because he doesn't enjoy the money at all - the PR guy who sold his Ferrari, really. Just his greedy wife, spending his hard-earned money.
This sexist, 50's vibe approach to women is expressed publicly and formally by a spokesman of a corporate that claims to adopt values such as equality, diversity, etc. *facepalm*52 -
!shortRant
You all complaining about shit code from coworkers and about fucking WordPress. Looks different, but know what? Answer is the same.
Money.
Let me explain.
For example, you were born in USA. You can choose any profession, and if you became pro - you will be payed great. Looks nice, isn't it?
But if you were born in Russia, India, somewhere in Africa, whatever, you can be businessman, coder or you can suck a dick to the end of you life.
Not that great, yeah?
You are looking around and see great people with their own dreams and talents. But then you ask them "to which faculty are you going?" Answer is obvious. And that's how shitcoders are born.
And yeah, about WordPress. I'm mobile developer, I just can't understand how awful it is (or not, idunno). The only thing I know - if I were PHP developer, I could earn twice more than now. But why I didn't choose that way? Because I REALLY LOVE MY WORK. Everyday is good, I'm working at weekends often, because I want.
So please, shut up. You could never work with WordPress, but you motherfucker CHOOSE IT. You could switch to node, go, Java. Why the flying fuck you didn't? Oh yeah, MONEY. So please, shut up.
Devrant isn't for crying girls complaining about shit they did themselves. (No sexism, just metaphor, sorry girls)10 -
I hate all the hate, violence, and abuse in the world. I live somewhat close to one of the recent mass shootings and I’m fortunate to not have known anyone involved. But I wish we’d just stop trying to point fingers and actually do something about the mental health here. All the Racism, Sexism (on both sides), and mental health that goes unchecked genuinely makes me sad. And this bullshit with Walmart taking down any advertisements for “violent video games” but still selling guns is horse shit. Idc if you sell the guns but if you’re going to fuck over video games for nothing because they’re never the cause, then stop selling guns if you’re rolling off this bullshit logic.
I hope everyone is safe and doing okay.10 -
My manager told me that when he noticed my male colleague disturbing tasks and helping out juniors, he recommended him for a lead position then proceeded to tell how I am a great mentor and how well my year end goal items were managed.12

Let's assume sexism is the number one reason that we see less female developers. What in your opinion would be the second largest barrier?52
-
Question: Have you ever worked for a toxic company? If so, did do you do something about it? Any tips?
By toxic I mean the abusive kind, where racism and sexism are "just jokes" and where clients are essentially scammed into buying software that doesn't do what they think it does.8 -
The CS instructor who was (maybe an adjunct?) who no matter what homework we turned in gave us randomly different grades. We actually all handed in the same hw one time to see what would happen (only changing variable names and such), and confirmed it. Also, he used to call me J-Lo when I'd raise my hand to answer questions. (I was fit and am Latina) The second time he did it, I sternly corrected him in front of the whole class. He stopped after that. And yes he was gone from the school soon after!5
-
Once I went for this women-centric hackathon that had to have at least one female member in the team. On winning, one of the other winning (male) devs commented on how I was probably there just to complete the team even when I did most of the work.
Don't know if it's the fact that I have green hair or the fact that I'm a girl.5 -
I think I need glasses (or at least more coffee) but every time I think about contributing to an open source project maintained by a "Comunity", i find out that I missed the smelly bits in theire massive coc that they want to ram down your throat.
Eigther I missed them every time or some fuck puts them in after I read them.
The first time it's about mostly Standart shit like: don't troll/flame/insult/detract. But than I start seeing: Sexism, Racism, xenophobia, hetotonormativity (wtf nodeJs)/homophobia insta ban. They even assert that you should apologize even if you did nothing wrong and your not allowed to stand your ground or your banned.
And if the mod pulls a fast one on your buddy, not allowed to be discussed in any public forum or your banned too.
What happened? I was sure that only the bigger repos had that shit (like the Linux kernel (that bans you for being pro trump). Have I missed something?
Fuck every repo that does that shit. They ain't gonna get my time or money.7 -
I've been meaning to sign up on dev.to for a while now.
Finally started the sign up process. They require you to agree to follow their code of conduct which states that they will prioritize empowering the marginalized communities and in order to do that they will *not* act on complaints of reverse-isms. Reverse (sexism | racism), cisphobia, etc.
Am I the only one who thinks that this is wrong? I'm all for empowering people, tolerance and not getting trolled but outrightly rejecting complaints on topics that seem politically incorrect sounds superfluous to me. Am I interpreting something wrong? (I hope I am because in general I find the community to be nice and positive)3 -
I now have an onlyfans!
Time to start posting pictures of my massive cock and my round hairy arse!
Surely I'll be making thousands of dollars in the next few days!4 -
