Looking at my play console and adMod data, I concluded that :
Most of the revenue generated from my app is from the users clicking in-app ads of my competitor and finally migrating.

Best: My first app on the play store got over 2000 downloads in 3 days, best Christmas present ever.
Worst: An update I published caused an equivalent of 1/4 of my user base worth of crashes. :/8 -
-"Okay dad, i saw your previous rant on devRant about android studio. So let Me show you how its done!"
Future dev (:2 -
So I was hired about 4 months or so in this companty, we will name it 'Derp & Co.'
The first task they want me to do was to 'clean' an android app that, for what they told me:
- Previous dev fired. said that tasks have been done but totally a lie.
- Took a fully week of 2 fellows coworkers to 'undo' the mess.
- And for the last but not least, zero documentation, like ZERO.
So, I clone the repo, install android studio, blah blah blah, get hands to the pile of code and jesus...
- The whole app was working with a gargantuan json, there was no use of POJOs at all. Objects are for normies.
- A masive copy/paste code, like 'I will need this here, crtl-c... ctrl-v, DONE!'
- Threads are free, isn't it? let's just put a thread whenever I desire to make an HTTP request and not reuse code at all.
So... with this on mind, my first task is to make proper objects:
- Coworker: 'Sorry dev, we don't have documentation for this, you must debug the code to se what the server will send to you'.
- Me: 'Real?'
Shit... ok. So I first try to figure out how the hell is made my gargantuan json. A month was entirely lost to unravel this data and implement Objects, improve their code, reuse code, etc. but at the very end:
- coworker: 'Good job dev, when the POJOs are done, we can focus on the next task, whe have to define a new DATA MODEL because the one we are using now is not good at all'.
*note: the app is on production and working with all the previous 'features' and today it still on use on some enviroments.
- Me: 'Wait... this is a joke, now you want to define new data models? This should have been done in first place!' <WTF face>
- Coworker: 'I don't think so dev, Mr. boss have this list with things to improve on the app an this is the order of do the tasks'.
Mr. boss is on vacations, two days after he came back:
- Mr boss: 'Coworker said that you have been working with POJOs, is that right?'
- Me: 'Yes'
- Mr boss: 'Why? Did not see the need of a new data model?'
- Me: 'I told that to him, but he insist on "the order" of the list.
- Mr. boss <facepalm>
This is one of the few tales i have from 'Derp & Co.'
PS: Sorry if i made a mistake on writing, english is not my first language and maybe I have done some mistakes.7 -
My day in a nutshell:
Fixed the app.
Broke the app.
Fixed the app.
Broke the app.
Reverted all changes from repo.
Fixed app.
Found new bug.

--- New API allows developers to update Android Apps while using them ---
Today, at the Android Dev Summit, Google announced a new API which allows developers to update an app while using it.
Until now, you were forced to close the app and were locked out of it until the update has finished.
This new API adds two different options:
1.) A Full-Screen experience which locks the user out of the app which should be used for critical updates when you expect the user to wait for the update to be applied immediately. This option is very similar to how the update flow worked until now.
2.) A flexible update so users can keep using the app while it's updating. Google also said that you can completely customize the update flow so it feels like part of your app!
For now, the API is only available for early-access partners, but it will be released for everyone soon!

I had an intern in for VBA programming on day one they realized that they were in need of an android dev, so the boss came to me and asked if I had any experience with android. I replied with yes a little, I had begun multiple projects but never finished only one of them. After 4 weeks of developing I presented my progress a pretty ugly but working app, after the meeting the boss told me that a other team of devs were building the same app but didn't made any progress in 1.5 years.
Ps: sry 4 my English.4 -
I am 22 years old, at 18 I started to study systems and networks, I learned commands, network protocols, assembly and maintenance of servers, at 20 I started to study computer security, at 21 I started programming classes, I learned bash scripting , A bit of javascript and object-oriented programming with java, I fell in love with programming instantly, after classes I spent hours practicing new things, reading all the documentation of things I didn't understand and coding as long as I could , When I finished my studies I started to learnt android developing, almost a year ago, I made my own application, the first software I made public, it was a failure, I hardly had installations and most people uninstalled it, the UI Was ugly, the idea was not as good as I thought, after some bug fixes I started reading a book on C ++, I started to practice, it made me better using object-oriented programming, a month later, I came up with an idea, I used a lot an app, but I didn't like the way it was done, I wanted some extra features, something that was more useful to me, so I picked up a notebook and started drawing a user interface, I wrote what features I want and I started to develop it, one month later I published it, at the beginning almost had no users, but little by little it started to be used, after almost two months it reached a thousand users, I felt great, there were people who liked my App, I spent months working on new features, more and more people started to download it, soon it'll have 10000 downloads, currently I'm working on a new app, tomorrow (December 31) I will publish it, I hope there are many users who enjoy it.
And that's my little story.
Sorry for my bad English...7 -
Android and Full Stack dev here. Also first post.
No boss, i won't call that client to tell him how to configure ssl for his Outlook.10 -
I published an app around half a year ago and was confused why a lot of people were uninstalling within a few days. The app looked and worked amazing on my device.
Recently I got a new phone with a better resolution so I naturally installed my app.
FUCK!
The layout is actually shit and barely anything makes sense!
Uninstalled Immediately!!7 -

As an Android developer i keep on looking at every single app as if am going to write it again as code3

Sandev. The santa dev.
If you are a nice dev, he makes your code work... If you are a naughty dev, he fills it with bugs.
If you are an immensely naughty dev, he disables all browsers except for an older version of IE, rm -rfs your linux distro, and magically makes android studio eat up more ram than usual.7 -
Are you a iOs developer/Android developer/graphic designer/web developer/3D artist aged 18 - 30? Are you fluent in English, both written and spoken? Well, that's nice , Good day 🤡1

My friend who is new to Android App Dev was trying to make a simple app that programmatically takes a pic then sends it as an MMS. He opened Stack Overflow, copied code and i heard him murmur "hmm this is simple". Knowing the future, and the wrath of Android Studio, i leaned into my seat and waited. 2 hours later i knew Andy Studio had pissed all over him and it was written all over his face. I walked past him as if to go to the toilet then back again, his screen was blood red with errors and my heart danced and sang.
3 hours later i was out of the room and he sent me a text saying "I give up". I replied, "well tbh, im suprised it took you that long"
Thank you Android Studio for showing all those who think all we do is copy and paste code that they are freakin retards.4 -
Meet 'SBI Online' app from Play Store, in their own words:
What they were supposed to do?
"Experience the new Retail Internet Banking of SBI"
What they do?
"SBI online app will redirect to SBI Retail Internet Banking (online SBI) site"
Why do they have app?
"No need to remember URL",
"Less memory space required on device"
App storage space?
F**king 2.6 MB, just to redirect users to their website, in third-party browser.2 -
!rant, just wanted to express my excitement to someone
Not sure if this counts but technically I got my first freelance dev job designing an app for a club/small business at school. I have a lot to learn still but I'm really happy about the opportunity3 -
This is my worst day ever just formatted my laptop and forgot to backup my Android keystore........😤😤😬 Just visited stack overflow only to learn that without the keystore you can't make updates for your app.I will never update my apps on playstore now.... Shit. Am fucked totally...👹👹10

2017 was a dream come true literally.Long story short, I quit my job of 6 years as a PE teacher, studied Android Development through Udacity's Nanodegree program, moved my wife and kids out of our house (we were renting), moved in with my in-laws, Trusted God, learned how to build Android apps, applied at numerous tech companies, got offered 2 jobs, got hired as an Android Developer in Tennessee in December making almost more than twice I did as a teacher. My first day of work is January 8th. What a year it's been!6
-
If the requirements are this stringent in the job posting, I can't imagine how terrible it would be to work for this person.9
-
Just started my Android development internship. Atleast now I don't feel like a worthless piece of shit who wastes the whole day.4
-
Why don't Android users upgrade to newer phones?
It's a pain supporting users on API level 20 and below. -_-16 -
Best thing about being a mobile developer:
Whenever your elders give you shit for being on the phone too much, tell them that you are testing your app and get away with it.1 -
So apparently some genius motherfucker managed to allow Androids that are missing or have a bad/inaccurate/busted gyro to run VR apps as long as they have a magnetic sensor (compass) and an accelerometer, using both to spoof the gyro. It requires root, but goddamn is that smart... It's even potentially more accurate than a gyro in quite a few situations, since it uses the compass and can even be used to override the ACTUAL gyro, so if the gyro is busted, drifts like a motherfucker, is inaccurate, etc. it can alleviate the issue!
and google's always like "well this shit is impossible to do" then the community comes along a month later and does it7 -
After reading this post I'm like what's next ? No fukin iPhones in the box just $999 for a satisfying unboxing experience17

Me: 3 Years of Android Dev exp in business setting, but no degree

After writing JavaScript codes in Sublime Text I realise how easy it is in Android Studio with intelliJ.
You may be slow Android Studio, but you are smart. And I love you for that.2 -
"We chose Android Native as our dev stack because we all got experience in Java"
- The biggest mistake I've ever made in a group project7 -
I was in second year of University when I joined the internship, I knew the business idea sucks and he wouldn't be able to carry out the operations either. Little did I know that I will work with the dumbest team ever, literally, the dumbest.
So, the major chunk of the software was outsourced to a consultancy. I was a tech intern, and we were developing an Android App that will save your parking location, let you reserve locations and all etc.
I knew I have stepped on a wrong turf, but again, I had nothing better to do that summer. So, for a very meager stipend, I said yes to a very stupid project. Let the stupidity flow...
~ The boss, had quit his job for this dumb idea with no funding, no team, nothing.
~ He was pursuing a certification course in Android Development from somewhere, where their final project will be a calculator!
~ He had little to no tech skills, hardly knew Java but was leading an Android App Dev project in Java. He had little to no managerial, marketing or sales skills either.
~ For a brief period, I had to work along with the consultancy guys to ramp up their work. They would take backups in a USB drive every evening, and share each others code using the same. VCS died a painful death that day.
~ They hardly wrote functions, rather, wrote very long code in the main (onCreate) function. Code style died of cancer.
~ They couldn't compress an image before sending it to a server. I had to do it for them.
~ Had no concept of creating utility classes.
And best of all,
~ Wrote 20 cases (switch case) with the same code! Instead of using a loop...2 -

New Android P Dev preview looks fucking awesome.
Can't wait for full release and build it for my device.1 -
Finally done with all the Java tutorials and trainings that I have.. now on to learning Android development with teamtreehouse! Any suggestions at all from any of the awesome vets here??6

Confused as hell: Android TextView is equivalent to iOS UILabel, and iOS UITextView is somehow equivalent to Android EditText! 😡😡😡
Learning Android should be hard for an iOS Dev!7 -
When you are finish doing the UI of the app then your UI/UX expert suddenly want to change everything, because he/she saw much cooler ui in the pinterest. The Horror!2
-
Only if people understood the amount of effort that goes behind building a simple app.
Even if it's a simple notes app, I've to design the UI (at least 2 different activities - 1 for the list and the other for editing notes), write the code which makes it run i.e. without which the app is just a piece of empty design, think about what data
structures to use (that notes you are saving need to be stored somehow) and then club everything together and hope nothing breaks (spoiler alert: something will definitely break).
People need to understand that it's not just putting some fancy buttons and boxes around. Also, I'm not just making the app for one device. I've to make sure it works on different screen sizes, different versions of the OS (a user can't imagine how many functions need to be re written because something got deprecated in the process and I'd to switch to something different).
Also I'm not just sitting at my computer and converting coffee to code. I've to think about the flow, structure, design, navigation, backend etc. Of the app; most of my time isn't spent writing code but thinking/studying how to write the code. I also need to wait while the project is compiling/building every time I want to test it.
A function which you think is hard to implement night be really easy while something you claim is easy might be a nightmare. Oh and I didn't even mention how I need to stick to some design guidelines to make the app look consistent with the rest of the OS.
If you're wondering why a developer is spending most of his time on a browser, he isn't playing internet games or browsing reddit ( at least you better hope not), he's probably looking at the docs/stack overflow to get something to work/fix something!
Wow! That was long. Thanks!3 -
What is wrong with people. I put in hours of my time every day and it hurts to see some annonymous person complaining shit about something that doesn't even exist.
😤😤16 -
Android development:
- read the official documentation
- implement the logic in your app using what you learned
- find out that at least one method is always deprecated
- read the updated API and, as always, check out your loyal friend Stack Overflow.2 -
In Android O RAM statistics got moved to developer settings.
So this means you are a Dev if you know what ram is??6 -
This is a student helper app I coded and designed for our university that is written in Dart and flutter. For now it supports fetching the course schedule for a given student and the cafeteria menu. What do you guys think of the UI? Any recommendations for improvement or tips for working with flutter in general?25

Time to add a new feature in an Android app:-
Java code with basic layout to implement the feature - 1 hour
Polishing the layout - 30 mins
Time to fucking make the scroll view wrap around the text and not overflow in the dialog so that the buttons below are visible - 6-10 hours!!!12 -
I was wondering about switching from android dev to ios dev.
Any idea about this?
Do you recommand or not?10 -
Reporter: We are now here reporting live from the native mobile app wilderness. As you can see in our captured footage, a developer is going rampage over some mobile UI components.
Native iOS: grrrr... I hate radio buttons!!!..grrr...dropdown lists, too! keep them away from me! I'm allergic to android and web controls, d*mn it! what kind of designer are you!?!
Reporter: That's it for today's devRant episode. Back to you, Steve.1 -
Me and the unofficial CTO (3rd party's CTO) are interviewing an ios dev. (I'm an android dev, btw)
CTO: In your view, would you find developing an ios app would be faster or at the same speed as an android dev?
Me: *shock*
Canidate: I've never developed on Android before, but I'd think it would be the same speed. We both need to make screens, views, and type code.6 -
Previous intern had a bad habit of living empty catch blocks...
It's like he had some mommy issues.
It's like handing an empty first aid box to guy.
"You know what I am gonna do, leave empty catch every where just to fuck with the next guy...Ha...Ha..."1 -
Does anyone else think Android development is kind of dead?
I mean there is a great article for this (https://medium.com/@steve.yegge/...) but basically, React Native and its' tons of "flavors" have beaten native Android Development so badly, Android isn't anything special anymore - nobody wants to touch Mobile Java in 2018.
Google's response? Make another framework to compete with itself. This is why I said I wasn't joking when I "quit" android dev.16 -
I got my first gig as an android developer a couple of months back.
Today, my changes got merged into candidate, soon to be released.
Although they are mostly bug fixes, I feel proud that code written by me will be rolled out to 400000 users. :')3 -
I am a senior Android dev, and I have an old colleague (iOS senior dev). We work on the same project, but in every estimation session he pushes a lot on the lower side: he estimates 4h a task that normally takes 6h or 8h, and the reason is that he has no social life. Right after work he starts working again from home (I can see all his commits), he also works almost entire weekends. I would say he works as average 12/13 h per day.
I don t want to work extra time (unpayed).
About him, it is his life, so I don t care...but at the same time this makes me pressure. I care a lot about quality of code, and I don t want to sacrifice it just for catching up. Most of the people in the team know that he works a lot extra time.
How would you handle this?28 -
Best: I got my first job as Android dev
Worst: Long commute everyday (2.5 hours from home to work)2 -
Made this app just for the fun of it. Let me know what you guys think about it. And do suggest places for improvement. 😃

A friend of mine just called me to ask if I can help him hack an Instagram account... In my head (He's quite aware I lost my dad less than a week ago even if I was an hacker I'll expect and respect some little remorse atleast around moments like this, I would not be expected to do dirty shit at these times). spent 3 weeks with not more than 20 hours sleep per week on programming a mobile Chat Application. after finally 1 more week of bug fixing and testing and redesigning UI, App works like a charm! Most beautiful thing I ever created, my close friends are all astonished.
Happily I uploaded it on Playstore, 2 weeks later -> no downloads :(13 -

Used to not work for Google /Android, but since the entire Android community uses about everything he makes, and then everything he touches turns into gold and becomes part of the Android SDK sooner or later, because his work is so useful and good. He now works for Google / Android. He's one of the Android gods, a true rockstar dev!2 -
You know what's fucking horrible?
Implementing new features to an Android app in production that another dev wrote...
...which has no architecture, no documentation, no modularity, no testability, everything runs on the UI thread, filled with spaghetti code and it somehow works smoothely so I have to not fuck it up.
Oh and I'm also a junior. So fuck me, right?1 -
I gonna puke if I see more whining on android studio from a guy having 8GB of ram and running IDE emulator and a browser. To remind everyone, decent android phones have 4GB of ram or more. They have memory cards with io speeds comparable to SSD. They have 10 core CPUs. And still, people want to develop on potatoes.10
-
I've published my first app on the Play Store! Does this mean I get to call myself a developer now? 🤔2

That moment when you realize that the iOS dev uploaded to ITunes Store an app pointing to the devel IP and not the production one Omg! (i'm an android dev)2

Meeting at 'Derp & Co', the topic was what data model should send the back-end to frontend & app via API calls:
- Coworker: 'we should send the data structured like this for reasons'.
- Me: 'Yeah, this nested object.object.object should do the trick for the front end, but this will be a pain in the ass to convert to POJOs. Why not use something like idk better structure?'
<Mad/intrigued faces>
- CoworkerS: 'Why you need to use POJOs?'
- Me: <More Mad> 'cause I work with java in android... and we have/need/like objects?
<Captain Obvious left the room>
- CoworkerS: 'Oh yeah, well... we can do it the way you say'.
Why you need Objects... what is the next?
- Git? For what? Did not have the usb key from day one?2 -
So i left my job as an android dev earlier (nothing big, just didnt wanna juggle school and work) and as the year started i noticed that somehow i ended up working as an android dev again but this time in c#. There's no escape.9

Why does everyone screenshot a Tweet, instead of using a perfectly good app 'Tweet2Pic' being available on Play Store.

Need Advice + Rant
I am an Android Developer, pursuing an Internship, which i thought would be good for my career. But I am being assigned the task to build search feature for the App using Elastic Search. I intially was halpy to work on Search since it had to be Algolia. I am hating the work now because I am getting so stuck with Elastic and there have been other factors which also have decreased my productivity, but I am being quite inefficient. Now the deadlines are coming closer and if I dont give output I will be laid off. I am thinking about quitting myself because now I feel extremely demoralized and demotivated to work because we first decided to work on Algolia and it was all ready before we thought of shifting to heroku and now on AWS. What do the experienced once suggest? It's not that its impossible to do, now i just have to write queries in Java, again I am stuck and not really looking forward to since I was given the deadline today, for 2 days later.
The only issue is, I may have to return the new phone (OnePlus 3T) which I bought planning to later return the money to someone through my stipend.23 -
After 2 months of working with Android Studio I have to apologise... Im sorry for any bad word Ive ever said about you VisualStudio, I love you!2

I love Android development, but I HATE make individual strings for each word in my apps. It's so tedious! There's gotta be a better way than telling myself, "Oh crap you better be a good boy and use Google's 'best practices' and not hardcode all your strings. Who knows you might make this app translatable in Portuguese someday and it'll be easy then!". I HATE it!!2

Registered for hackathon with 2 Android dev and 2 Full stack dev. Turns out the theme for hackathon is totally out of our scope. This will be my very first hackathon.

I don't know if our QA is good enough. We were developing an app for both ios and android. I, an ios developer, told the QA guy that it will take long before uploading the app in the testflight (convert swift2 to swift3). After a week the app is now uploaded in the test flight and at the same time my partner, an android developer, uploaded the android version of the app in the play store beta. The QA guy started to raise bug issues about the android version. He wanted to fix the bugs immediately since our boss needed to upload it in the play store and appstore. The QA guy kept on complaining to my partner why the android version is buggy. Then he said something we, me and my partner, facepalm.
The QA guy said " You shouldn't convert the app to swift 3. The ios version is fine when converted why the android version is buggy. You need to revert it back to swift 2"
We sit there in silence, thinking if we pity the QA guy or laugh at him. -
Happy!
Being an Android Dev myself, I bought my first app in Play Store!
Nova Launcher Prime was offered @ ₹10 (~0.15$). No matter how small the contribution is, it's quite a special joy to support another dev!6 -

I was working on an android project this morning.I started android studio.
I went and made a cup of coffee and had it,came back still gradle was building -
Rookie me,back when I was making my first Android app...
After a lot of hours put into it, finally finished it...pretty much was ready for deployment...some final touches...but oh wait... I was messing with some files-wanted to delete something and misclicked the whole folder...well my brain farted for a moment and clicked yes-I managed to erase the whole fucking app I was working for months...!
The whole world shut down at that moment! What the fuck did I do?...
In this point I want to thank jetbrains for their magical revert button....
Moral of the story: Learn Git, backup everything and don't be too excited and fuck up tremendously...! -
Working on my first Android app. 🤔🤷🏾♂️
I've heard mixed reviews about building Android apps. I've used Xcode to build apps before, I'm sure it's the same lol 😂20 -
What are some good android developer communities? Looking for somewhere to learn and ask questions that might not be code related, so can't be on stack overflow. What do you use? I use android for hobby projects only.5

The most horrifying thing for any Android Dev:
The client wants to build a media app and owns a Samsung device!!!1 -
iOS vs android? And why?
I start: iOS cause I'm an iOS dev and I hate how the OS of android works (not saying that iOS is perfect)14 -
I just became an android dev last week, yay for me. Though, I really hate how I inherited more than 50k lines of spaghetti!
They ask me to fix this and that, but that's okay for me, I can manage this.
The worst thing is we don't use any kind of version control system. And I'm always tasked to merge my work with other 2 android dev working on same spaghetti.1 -
Not sure if I am Allowed to ask general questions here but here's the thing. I just began making Android apps. I have made a few basic of them and I use constraint layout via the layout editor in Android Studio. Is it okay? Do professionals do the same or do they actually type in the xml code?14
-
Getting started with MEAN stack(finally) after lot of thinking (and a year of android dev). Wish me luck and provide your inputs about my decision.8

I kinda hate Java. And Android Studio.
I have to develop an app for participant registration/management for college techfest by 10th march.
Fuck.
(I'm using Cordova or React Native, but still.)
Fuck.6 -
What certifications do you guys have, and which do you recommend having?
I'm currently pursuing AWS Developer Assosiate, and in the future Google certified Android developer and MongoDB developer.
Been thinking about Docker but it costs too much15 -

Had wanted to learn web dev from a long time (Im an android dev). Got to know about free code camp and started 3 days ago. Totally addicted to it. Anyone who wants to learn web dev must try it. Simply great work.

I can't shift to kotlin because my company is fucking around on being on Java 7 (with retrolamdas *wink*), where it takes 10 minutes for a gradle build.1

Non-IT
Can't afford laptop
Want to make an app from scratch by coding , compiling from my Android mobile.
Is it possible??
What would you suggest me?
Which language would be better to start with.
step by step procedure would be helpful.
Do's and don't!!!
Or this attempt look silly/lame?!23 -
A colleague went on vacation, as the lead mobile engineer I had to cover his work. Switching between iOS dev and Android dev usually is fun. Integrated and deployed a dozen tickets for each platform within 12hrs.
-
Suggestion please!
I work basically on native android applications. From last week I started exploring cross platform and chose React native. I have zero knowledge on JS. And now it seems very hard to grab. I started a project and learning whatever I'm needing on that purpose. Some props I'm shooting blindly and components I don't even understand clearly how they are working.
Please suggest me a convenient way or guide me with some resources to alleviate my frustration! Pretty please!4 -
That feeling when your app crashes on the home screen, because you forget to update some code from the previous version. How many of you guys have gone through this before?
-
I just realized I haven't installed the android SDK on my new device jet...
Too tired for this!
Good night fellow ranters!2 -
Okay so I'm one of those developers who haven't moved to constraint layouts yet. I've been working on heavily nested layouts (for obvious reasons) and the gravity chooses to kill the fun every time :))2

Hello fellow Devs,
I have developed a small Android library for handling HTTP POST and GET requests. Anyone who is looking for an easy way to perform HTTP calls, can use this library. It supports post requests with JSON and Multipart Form data, file uploading and Get request with URL parameters.
Hope it will help you guys.

So I start my new dev job Monday and I'm considering vlogging/blogging the experience. Have any of you found success doing this? Not monetarily but like actually had time to create some decent content. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.3

Alright I have a question for android/ios app dev, as being a web dev I see one has to do so much for tech stack as there are tons of web languages. And to keep themselves upto date according to the latest tech stack they have to learn new every day.
What about app devs you don't have so many languages like web do so can I say a person spending more time in one lang can learn it way better than web devs who have to look for the latest tech stack and start from the scratch?7 -

Need Advice....
So, I moved to Bangalore after graduation this year and I am interning at a startup till Jan in Android Development. It's a six month internship. Everybody I meet gets surprised after hearing that I took up the internship even after graduation and that it's 6 months long.
I actually interviewed at a couple of places before accepting this internship and all those startups were like the next Facebook, the next Instagram, the next blah...Blah...Nothing new...And this opportunity felt like something where I would learn something new...
But as I meet people every now and then and as the financial ground below me keeps on shrinking, I keep on questioning my desicion.
BTW I am searching for good job opportunities but again can't find any exciting opportunity and the ones I find don't even give an opportunity for the interview...4 -
Learning Android dev recently, everything is going quite well but damn, I'm stuggling with those recycler views.. any tips?6

I have been an android developer since long time, yet android migrate everything from Java to Kotlin
But am really worried to migrate everything from Java to Kotlin or begin this phase can you please help and tell me where is the best way to learn kotlin and get easily adapted3 -
Hey Android Studio when I put you to bed you was happy and we had so much fun! Why in the morning when I open my project you complain about build issues? What changed?...
Oh, I get it GRADLE is messing you up again! FMDL2 -
For some weeks now I've been having strange compilation issues with Android Studio on Windows 10. Some of my builds fail with funny errors that have only 1-3 StackOverflow entries. When I switch to Linux (Pop!OS) it complies without errors apk gets installed on device. At some point I was frustrated where I spent a whole day trying to figure what's wrong only at night to code using Linux and it compiled. What's up with Android Dev on Windows?3
-
I've finally entered to a brand new project in Android .. the client wants to show everything in god damn web views1
-
This morning I had an update to my one plus 3t
I now have face unlock...
And the latest (almost every few months) Android security updates
This is how software should be, this is how phone manufacturers should utilize their os, not by slapping some heavyweight skin on it. But by keeping it stock with added features. And when the time is right new features, most importantly security updates1 -
If I get asked why I didn't complete a task tomorrow I will respond politely with "because we outsource all of our projects, I am fixing shitty bugs resulting from abismal code on 6 different project, merging requests, project managing even though I'm a developer, liaising with clients, writing scopes of works, estimating new projects whilst being the lead dev on 4 projects. Sorry you're right, like everyone else you need this today. I'll get right on that"
-
Me: Writes tests while fixing bug
Supervisor: "I'd suggest fixing other bugs and then picking up test cases"
Well the reasons we have so many bugs is that you let our off-shore devs just write code with ZERO code coverage!! -
I made my first app after 3 years of learning Android studio in my free times and experimenting on codes.
I will be glad if you guys check my app and send me your suggestions and ideas to help me improve my skills .

Been working on an Android app for some time. Silly me too lazy to use VCS. Anyway, one day android studio just could not build my project and errors that should not be errors popped up everywhere and nothing I did fixed the problem. Somehow my project got corrupted. 3 hours later of googling and trying to recover my project I had to resort to creating a new project and manually port the old files in one by one :( but all I have to say is WHAT THE FUCK ANDROID STUDIO3

It was a simple wallpaper app for Android but it is my most precious project.

Is it already a thing now, thinking of giving it a try
There is so much confusion out there for a mobile developer what platform to choose, btw m developing native android apps from past 3 years.
What are your thoughts on it?6 -

I feel that it's better to develop in Kotlin, for android, as a beginner, given the recent announcement.
Any other suggestions?12 -
So I get an internship and I am obviously very happy about it.
First day at work and I get a brief idea of what my project is and it was related to machine learning with tensorflow which I have experience with.
Come tensorflow lite and NN api, my job is now to convert tensorflow model into tfLite and use NN api whichpart of NDK and I have 0 clue about it.
So I obviously go to documentation and read up about it. Goes to Google sample to checkout NNAPI example and I freak out looking at the no of files and the code cuz. Wtf are these JAVA CPP WRAPPER AND NATIVE CODE .HOW DO I EVEN START WRITING CODE FOR IT. WHERE DO I BEGIN. HOW DO I USE NDK WITH THIS. THERE ARE NO OTHER EXAMPLES ON THIS REEEEEEEE
Legit feel like quitting already2 -
This is a screenshot of the preferences screen of my Android app. I have just added the preference that's at the top. It is a ListPreference. Does having the summary string this long for this make it look bad? I'm not sure how else I would explain the options to the user. Just looking for UI advice.6

How do you guys prefer to hide the API keys you use in your (native) Android apps?
I'm an Android noob and the app I'm building uses some NLP services which are accessed through a key. I searched around and found a few techniques (obfuscation, serverside storage, etc.), just wanted to know what you folks recommend.5 -
Devs out there.. what is your celebration / how do you celebrate when your task / code works as you expected .10

That was probably during a group project back in my university years. We developed a fully-fledged Android 1.5 app, including docs, testing and web server (backend) in less than a month. Funny thing is that at the time none of us had a smarphone.

When you import a project into a fresh install of Android Studio and the bitch has a gazillion things to install.
You might as well take a good nap if you've got shit internet 😒 -
Fiddled since the days of DOS, fell in to the world of Linux ~15 years ago, fiddled some more.
In 2010, though, I jokingly/enthusiastically commented on @anderwebs twitpic about how he was adding theming to the ADW Android launcher and I was excited about a BuuF theme for Android.
He replied with something like, "cool, you gonna do it?". And I thought to myself, sure why not...and I did. Great learning experience.
Since then, I've stuck doing more of the systems/backend side of things...and I still, to this day, wouldn't consider myself a programmer as I'm not proficient in any one language....I'm a copy/paste weekend coder. I take advantage of software and my skills to manipulate it whenever/however I can.
I need some inspiration to move forward with my education and immersion with programming. I continue to take intro courses, but have not gotten to an advanced level.
Any recommendations for getting started with Android programming, without using much Java? I'd imagine I would have really gotten in to it if it had been Python, for some reason. -
Java I hate you! I've been stuck on an authentication issue for weeks now and just figured out what was wrong. The probem was my variable wasn't STATIC so it was passing in an old auth header every time. Literally I've been skimming and modifying my code like crazy for like 2 weeks and this simple modifier changes everything! Java I hate you and can't wait to migrate my code base to kotlin!4

I want to make my own Android app. I have completed Java basics. In Java basics I have completed encapsulation, abstraction, inheritance, polymorphism etc. I have basic knowledge of these all. So in this one month of time what should I learn which will help me in my Android app development.3

Hello everyone! Making my first rant.
I'm enrolled in informatics in university, and I'm learning c++ as part of my course. In my free time, I'm trying to take an online Android course (Udacity). What would you advise me to do to in terms of managing time? I also would like suggestions on programming languages to learn!3 -

Last nite, one of my projects started crashing with a ClassCastException because it couldn't cast a string to a boolean, inside an if. This is Java. You can't even run a project if you evaluate a string inside an if. Has anyone seen such a thing before? I'm running BBQLinux which at least for me it has a lot of permissions issues and somehow things got so f'd up that it even messed up the Android image to a point that the compiler couldn't find a method to set a string into a TextView. I'm not kidding.2

*trying different names, keywords, ids and methods to get atleast some output*
*checks json and recycler adapter, all fine but still the error*

Was tasked with going over an app that my company owns to see what aspects of it we can use for our next project. So, I checkout the codebase in Android Studio, and to my surprise after going through tons of confusing classes I don't find a single comment! How am I supposed to to figure out how anything works if the previous developers didn't comment ANYTHING!
Now, I'm still fairly new to programming professionally (about 2yrs) but I've learned how beneficial comments can be.
Ugh, now I have to spend the rest of this week deciphering this code like an archaeologist inside an Egyptian pyramid. -

I'm thinking about getting into Android dev soon, can anyone recommend a simple (if possible video) tutorial series to get started?

So I was using the Android O Dev preview and decided the annoying things in it was just too much so I un-enrolled which reset my device, I'm now on Android N and have been for a week or two, everything's up to date and all but holding the home menu gives me the "Now on tap", I've cleared the Google app and services data/cache, swapped the language to English (US) and rebooted a few times but still nothing.
I'm not rooted and my bootloader is locked, I'm in Australia and had access to Google Assistant without any trickery before...
Not too sure what I'm missing and how to enable Assistant? So freaking annoying not having it and stuff, it was so useful and I miss it3 -

I started to use the MVP architecture for Android App development a year ago with a project that wasn't all that complex. My project manager liked the idea but despite that we continued with an MVC'ish approach for other projects (corporate bullshit restrictions). Yesterday I reopened the project after 8 months and Iam wondering why the fuck didn't we switch to MVP I just created 6+ screens with little to no effort including data feeding from an internal API. I would like to hear your experience with MVP architecture.
