Me: yeah but other specs?
Friend: doesn't matter! The photos are of 8mb!

I'm only two step far from having an intelligent house, just missing finish my own domotic system and then a bot to control, music, TV, and electricity.

Let's do the list:

1.- Kodi on TV ✔

2.- MPD on a hidden PC inside my old grandpa's stereo ✔

3.- a small data server to provide music, movies and series to Kodi and mpd ✔

(This is something that im trying to do with spare PC's running Linux on my free time)

So my windows VM decided to start running slow and bogging down the host system...

Decided to drop it down to just 2 cores, 2GB of RAM and 1GB of VRAM and now it's running smoother than when it had 4 cores, 8GB RAM and 3GB of VRAM...

Fuck the new Xiami that costs 1/4 comes with 4gb ram and a 4mAh battery...

I find it funny on Windows, Android studio reaches as much as 12GB of ram usage, while on Linux two instances barely take up to 3GB

Either java sucks on Windows or AS sucks in memory usage but happened to be saved by Linux

Nothing sucks more than running Android studio on a low configuration system (3GB RAM)!

I need ideas.
What's the best use for several old, moderately crap laptops (<= 4GB RAM) I have lying around? I'm using one as a minecraft server because 3GB ram is enough and the Pi isn't, but past that, I'm pretty stuck. They all work, mostly, have CD drives and mostly free hard drives.

More than 3GB ram is useless on android phones. Change my mind.

I bought cheap lg g5. It has 4gb ram (my old phone had 1gb ram). I have opened chrome with 4 tabs, an AAA game, devRant, Instagram, a vpn app, android settings and I'm listening music. There is still free 1,2 gb ram. Also this is not my everyday usage. I use maximum 3 apps at same time.

Got my new gear -- HP Omen 15 2020. Switched to windows after 6 years.
And boy, isn't WSL (Win subsystem for Linux) a GREAT thing.

FYI, I was previously using 1st gen Pentium with 3GB of RAM runnig Linux Mint. You can understand how I feel. 😀😀

A few days ago I decided to install Windows 7 on a VM (bad idea as it turned out). All fine and dandy and I ran Windows Update a few times to get it at least as up-to-date as it'll get.

I noticed that out of the 4GB RAM I had allocated, an svchost process responsible for the updates was gobbling up all the available memory, just leaving 82MB for everything else. The process itself was as you might imagine consuming over 3GB RAM just for itself. That's how an OS should work right after installation, I'm sure you'll agree.

So I complained about it. Haven't used Windows anywhere for a while so I wasn't used anymore to this level of efficiency. Disk activity went through the roof, though to be fair the underlying disk wasn't an SSD (qcow2 on ZFS on a spinning drive). RAM consumption is something I already covered. CPU temperature shot up to 95C.

So as any idiot would do, I disabled the service related to that process (the svchost process for wuauserv) and the problem went away. But I complained of course, saying that such amazing system utilization metrics wasn't something I expected. I mean for 4GB allocated, having as much as 82MB usable to get stuff done with! 95C on the CPU, on a lot of chips that's the junction temperature! Absolutely beautiful.

When I complained I heard that I had to replace the thermal grease. I do that twice a year. I wrote a custom fan driver for my system that works absolutely great. It was obviously shit. I must be a horrible sysadmin for solving a problem by eliminating the cause, and companies hiring me must be ashamed of themselves. My hardware must be shit (that's a common one with Windows users) despite being a business laptop and the guest system being a VM. Oh and I'm an idiot of course for complaining about such amazing system metrics in Windows.

I love Windows and its community...

MacBook died, currently in the lab, have a TERRIBLE dual core T4200, 3GB ram temp laptop replacement with VISTA.

Which Linux OS should I replace it for Dev/uni sake for few days? Considering that I don't have too much time on my hand to fix the tiniest headaches that comes after a Linux installation.

Its 5:32 am been working on a new social media website opened up devrant to check whatsup and found out people really have amazing pc setups ♥️ I couldn’t post mine because my laptop has a broken keyboard and i use a usb keyboard also my laptop overheats so i stuck skateboard wheels to two of the back supports its an i5 processor with 3gb of ram but I love it,its what you do with your resources that really matters right ? with that broken keyboard i created a website for my college department which now 720 students and teachers use and we have around 8k entries in 3 days. Running the website on a local server at my college so no money spent on hosting. Taking small steps towards my goals and hopefully one day i’ll publish my setup

I tried Firefox Quantum, but sadly back to Chrome it is for me.
I miss my extensions too much, and can't quite find an exact match for them in FF
It also still managed to use 3GB RAM 🙄

Can someone please explain why android studio (including emulator, but still) plus a couple of firefox tabs and windows 10 occupy the ~8.7GB of RAM that are 74% of the 12 gigs I have? Especially since summing up the ram in use by applications according to task manager makes it look like only 3gb. Is Android Studio using some dark magic to conceal its RAM usage? What the hell!

Woo time for a Chromebook rant against Samsung!

So they just 'revised' the Chromebook plus (Currently using v1 to write this) and I was intrigued because they ditched the Samsung made ARM chips for an intel CPU.... Buuuuuuuuuut... It's a fucking celeron... Of all fucking things to put in a half thousand dollar laptop, at least an m3 would be useful. Then I find out they are ditching the full metal body, it's heavier, thicker, same 3GB of RAM, ditching the 3:2 aspect ratio (Fucking why?!) and the 'upgraded' keyboard doesn't even have back lighting...

Ugh, makes me want a pixel book more, double the price and a million times the performance and quality -.-

Surely to God there is a way to write simple code on an Android 10 phone without a computer. My Moto G7 Super has 3GB RAM and 8 processors.

The UI will suck but shoot me already as I can't use a computer right now. The major problem is file access as the languages I have used are run in the cloud.

Any advice is welcome. At this point am agnostic re language.

Any suggestions?
