I'll tell you mine, I lived in Bangalore in 2018 when I was starting out living in a PG with 2 strangers, and I had to travel like 9 kms to my office, 7 kms by bus and 2 kms walk.

I was walking, listening to music as usual, when I felt uncomfortable with the sunshine burning my skin. So I thought, let me hire an autorickshaw and get to my job. But doing so, will result in no lunch today and if I wasted money on auto and lunch both, I won't have any money for the bus fare.

That feeling was my rock bottom thinking "Holy crap, I'm poor."

That incident is what I compare myself to, sometimes, and I think "Well at least it's not THAT bad."

Why the fuck does windows not remember the correct time or sync the correct time after having been dual booted with Linux yet the Linux install is functioning perfectly fine?

A genuine question to people who live in "heaven-on-earth" countries (Greece islands, Italy, Spain seaside, Portugal, etc.). Where do YOU travel to to chill, change scenery and relax?

I mean, for us, wildlings of the North, going South on vacation is a no-brainer. Like now, I'm getting my sanity back while sipping Rakia (IDK why not ouzo though..) in Crete. But where do Cret(ians?) and other Southerners go on vacation?

[DISCLAIMER : Potential Troll Topic here] I am self taught python and js (not considering myself as a real developer as I don't push much on github and work in a complete other field than anything related to CS right now) and would be interested to learn another language, with another paradigm. So, as I love you all, I would be interested In your highlights as I am currently considering either C, C++, Rust or Go.

with C, I know I could interface it with python. With C++ (despite Linus considering it evil) I know I could interface it with Node. I don't know currently what to do with Go, but some people seem really enthusiastic about it (not really relevant I know) and Rust seems like the C of today, with a bunch of new cool kid stuff. My main goal, after all, is to learn something new, to have another sight on programming. Either understanding more about hardware or learning another way of coding (like different from oop).

I know it sounds like a troll, but I promise it's not, just a serious genuine question (hopefully it won't be closed here like on SO)

It's a genuine question. Do we really need AI in all those areas? And is AI better than a static ruleset?

I'm not much into AI/ML (I'm a paranoic sceptic) but the way I understand it, the quality of AI operation correctness relies solely on the data it's
datamodel has been trained on. And if it's a rolling datamodel, i.e. if it's training (getting feedback) while it's LIVE, its correctness depends on how good the feedback is.

The way I see it, AI/ML are very good and useful in processing enormous amounts of data to establish its own "understanding" of the matter. But if the data is incorrect or the feedback is incorrect, the AI will learn it wrong and make false assumptions/claims.

So here I am, asking you, the wiser people, AI-savvy lads, to enlighten me with your wisdom and explain to me, is AI/ML really that much needed in all those areas, or is it simpler, cheaper and perhaps more reliable to do it the old-fashioned way, i.e. preprogramming a set of static rules (perhaps with dynamic thresholds) to process the data with?

Genuine question: Whenever an OS encounters a problem and I 'send' the report to help fix the problem, does anybody read that? Or windows just stalling?

Stack Overflow people have profound buffallo bullcrap on their skulls, they are some software engineers who have fucked COBOL and BASIC, probably somewhere like NASA, just pondering out where someone post a question. Just reviewed pull request submitted by a developer working for a contractor company and needed to leave 70 comments. Seventy.

Opened LinkedIn and saw a post from that same developer saying he left the contracting company an hour ago. I still can't believe it.

Genuine question, who reads programming books focused on a language?

How the hell do people handle being graceful in the face of others being confidently, dangerously, stubbornly wrong - particularly when they outrank you?

It's a genuine question. I'm decent at my job but I've met a good number who are way better and also totally diplomatic in the face of the relative idiots (including me) . Is it just the fine art of giving less shits?

Okay so I had this idea and I'm looking for anyone who has a better grasp of math than me.

What if instead of searching for prime factors we searched for a number above p?
One with a certain special property. BEAR WITH ME. I know I make these posts a lot and I'm a bit of a shitposter, but I'm being genuine here.

Take this cherry picked number, 697 for example.

It's factors are 17, and 41. It's trivial but just for demonstration.

If we represented it's factors as a bit string, where each bit represents the index that factor occurs at in a list of primes, it looks like this

1000001000000

When converted back to an integer that number becomes 4160, which we will call f.

And if we do 4160/(2**n) until the result returns
a fractional component, then N in this case will be 7.

And 7 is the index of our lowest factor 17 (lets call it A, and our highest factor we'll call B) in our primes list.

So the problem is changed from finding a factorization of p, to finding an algorithm that allows you to convert p into f. Once you have f it's a matter of converting it to binary, looking up the indexes of all bits set to 1, and finding the values of those indexes in the list of primes.

I'm working on doing that and if anyone has any insights I'm all ears.

Our computer science GCSE exams are so flawed in so many ways. They're awfully vague or just completely wrong. In the last exam I did, I got a question that was basically:

"There is a server in a network. Name 3 of its functions"

If you did not provide an answer within the 5 "correct answers", it was considered incorrect as it was beyond the curriculum hence irrelevant.

That's like penalising people for not correctly guessing the contents of an opaque box...

I've genuinely lost more marks to the flaws in the marking scheme than genuine error.

I'm a full stack developer, I have been using windows all my life but I purchased a new laptop recently, it has only 4gigs of RAM and I will upgrade it in the future but that's gonna take a while but mean while its running windows and its a pain in the ass! Memory is always almost full, disk(HDD 5400rpm) usage is 100% when I don't expect it to be. Chrome and VSCode hogs my memory and the laptop lags like crazy because of that webstorm and pycharm are all out of the question. I'd like to switch to a Linux distro, dual boot it since my windows is a genuine copy. Which Linux distro would be the best for me?

I have a genuine question for y’all folks: How do you define what’s your next job going to be ? As in what you set your mind to, I guess. I’ve been through multiple stages of thoughts during the past two years and I find myself stuck.

On the one hand I work at a decent company and I have a great team with a lot of benefits and an OK salary but on the other hand I want change, more challenges and to get a little bit more of 💰(I’m not complaining about what I have but I’m clearly on the low tiers of the salary range for a software engineer).

At first I thought I wanted to completely change my work area and go for music, then I thought I wanted to work for the biggest IT players (Google, Microsoft, etc…). Turns out none of these two ideas really suit me. I also don’t want to work in a startup, I’ve only had bad experiences so far and don’t seek to reproduce them yet again.

So I guess a more precise question is: If you were in my shoes, with all that in mind, what would you do?

As for the reasoning as to why I’m asking here: devRant is literally the only place I know with so many people that work in the same field, but that also have a lot of different experiences and background 😁

I'm someone who's already been in the workforce for a year now while still being a student (which is pretty convenient as it pays for my school), and talking with a lot of my friends online or at school, most of them would love to have responsibilities, and I can't relate at all: for me, responsibilities are just a weight on my shoulders and a Damocles sword over the head, ready to fall when you fuck up. I don't want people to rely on me, not because I don't think I'm good enough, but because I don't want to be held responsible for anything at all. Just let me do my thing in my corner, thanks, I'm good.

A genuine question, why do people hate rust

Anybody here who writes backends in golang? The preferred way to do so in Go is to use the standard libraries. Does it involve a lot of boilerplate? Are there better options?

As lead dev of a team, should I be writing estimation docs (more like novels) for new projects? I'm even told it should be at least n pages like back in frickin' high school.

Am I in the wrong for thinking it should be the PM's job to communicate with us devs and then write these useless docs to present to stakeholders, and he's just making me do his job while he's doing whatever else at home?

So I've been working on a project that has gone to shit, scope isn't clear and deadline is too tight. Developers get dropped into the team to "make it work"

Currently I think it is unavailable to succeed within the deadline. But this got me thinking, how do you actually save such a project? Could a good project lead save a chaotic project? If so... How? (And more importantly to me, how does one become a good project lead, do I need 10+ years of programming experience?)

How experienced is some one at front end if they use Wordpress for every site? Genuine question because I've never used it and usually create my templates and design (not very good but hey I'm not frontend) from scratch.
