My Friend: Dude our Linux Server is not working anymore!
Me: What? What did you do?
My friend: Nothing I swear!
Me: But you were last on it?
My friend: Yes. I just wanted to run a bash file and needed to give it permissions.
Me : WHAT DID YOU ENTER???!
My Friend: Chill man, just this command I found on the internet
chmod -R 600 /
chown -R root:root /
Me: WHY ARE YOU EVEN IN ROOT AND GOD DAMMIT WHY ARE YOU EVEN USING SOME RANDOM COMMAND FROM THE INTERNET. YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD NOT DO THIS OR JUST ASK!
My friend: Ok I did something wrong, how can I fix it?
Me: Did you make a backup or rsync of the server?
My friend: No. I just wanted to run this file.
Me: You holocausted the server. FUCK MY LIFE33
RandomGuy: I can't seem to play some videos on my laptop. Can you help?
LinuxPro: You have to install Arch Linux to do that. Windows 10 sucks.25
I thought I was a hardcore geek until I came on here.
Super chill enviroment tho
Programmers are some of the nicest people you will meet.
Except the 12 year old hackers.6
Years ago we had a visit from a startup company developing a firewall and I got the chance to talk with one of their devs.
He explained the subtleties of security holes in websites and after I said something about our site being secure thanks to being behind a firewall he gently asked what would happen if he entered a specially crafted test into one of the text fields ... and he gave an example ...
I got a chill, went back to my seat and traced what it would do ...
That was when I learned about sql injection and his example would have killed the DB :/
Before going home I designed a way to secure the input which I then refined over a few days.
We still use that today after 17 years.
That one single sentence really showed to never be to proud of our security and I realized how vulnerable our site was.2
My thoughts when my uncle was introducing me to one of his friends.
(M = me, U = uncle, F = Uncle's friend)
U : Meet M, he is a software developer, he works at * blah *.
M (Internally): That is a very reasonable introduction.
U : * Continues speaking. *
M (Internally): No, staph! It was good enough. Don't go any further.
U : He does * blah blah *
M (Internally): That's not even remotely related to what I do.
U : If you have any tech related problems, he is your guy.
M (Internally): You should have kept shut.
U : If your phone slows down, he can fix it.
M (Internally): Why would you even say that !?
U : He can fix all you printer issues.
M (Internally): Excuse me. What. The. Fuck!?
U : You should definitely consult him before purchasing any tech.
M (Internally): That's it. I give up. There is no hope left.
F : * Gestures U to clam down. *
F : * Nods at M in a very assuring manner. As if he were saying, 'chill bro! Its all cool, I understand.' *
M (Internally): Hold on. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe there is some hope left.
F : So, tell me, how good are you with excel formulas?
M (Internally): * Dies *4

I love this girl to death 😍7
Request: Stackoverflow-like theme for devRant so I can chill and read rants on work while the rest of my colleagues believe I'm working/ investigating a bug
So apparently devRant is a problem in my life. As those of you who've read any of my stuff here know I work at Victoria's Secret. So two of my friends come in just before I was ending my shift to see what the plans were for tonight. The usual - hit the club, crash at one of our houses.
Thing is, I was scrolling through devRant when they walked up. (the below is paraphrased)
Friend1: Ugh, you're still on that thing?
Friend2: Is she really? <looks over my shoulder>
Friend2: I don't get it. <pokes me in the left tit> You barely post on Instagram and you don't tweet anymore. And you haven't commented on any of my posts in like days. Wtf bitch?
Disclaimer: Yes, we are those girls who talk like that and go clubbing and dress up and makeup and all that shit. Don't judge me because I don't give a fuck. Anyway...
Me: Really? We're doing this? Because I haven't posted on fucking Instagram? I talk to you every day. I see you every other day. I like coding. I like tech. This place is awesome and the people are cool. If I want to see your ass or your outfit, I can just look at you. I don't need to be on Instagram 24/7.
Friend2: Jeez bitch. Need a tampon
<we all laugh>
Me: This is my thing. It doesn't mean we aren't friend and we won't chill, but my future is in development and technology. So deal hoes.
Friend1: Ugh you're such a nerd.
Me: And you're both like totally vapid sluts. But I love you.
Friend1: Totes jelly. Girl you need some vitamin D
Me: I'm sayin'. But that doesn't mean I won't spend my free time coding.
Friend2: Ugh alright we don't give a fuck. Code or whatever. Just be ready at 11.
We all flip each other the bird and they leave. I guess if that's the level of acceptance I can get from my wonderful, gorgeous, annoying, amazing, asshole best friends, I'll take it. I am not changing my path.74
!!linux dev lappy recommendations?
So, @Root might finally have a job! Woo!
(Pending a background check, drug test, cavity search, ...)
I'm excited, and kind of giddy. It's an open-office setup, but the devs are chill, the boss is chill (reminds me a bit of myself thus far, just... nice), pay is decent too. Drive is hell, but everything else feels kinda cushy. The parent company is super-stuffy corporate and has an HR and red tape fetish, but supposedly I won't have to interact with them at all. I start as soon as all of the background check nonsense comes through. (Don't get me started on that, please.)
One of the questions that came up, however, is what type of system I wanted to use. I requested a Linux lappy, and that's sadly a bit beyond the parent company's nontechnical IT department. They asked me for links to a few specific machines on amazon for options. (MacBook Pro or equivalent)
That's where this question comes in: Which lappys make great dev machines and also have decent linux (Debian/Mint/Ubuntu) support? The role is backend Rails development + some devops, so I don't need super-fancy graphics, though I will be attaching a 4k (hopefully IPS) display because space and pretty colors.
Recommendations welcome, as I should get back to them today!50
Before anyone starts going batshit crazy, this is NOT a windows hate post. Just a funny experience imo.
So I was tasked with installing ProxMox on a dedicated server at my last internship. The windows admin was my guider (he could also do debian). (he was a really nice/chill guy)
So we were discussing what VM's we wanted and the boss (really cool dude by the way) said he wanted a VPS for storing some company stuff as well. Fair enough, what would we use? I suggested debian and centos. Then we started discussing what we'd do if the systems would fuck up etc (at installation or whatever).
So I didn't wanna look like a Linux Nazi so I suggested windows. Then the happy/positive guider/windows admin suddenly became dead serious (I was actually like 'woah' for a second) and said this:
No. We're not going to fucking use windows for this. For general servers etc sometimes, fair enough but we're talking about sensitive company data here. I don't want that data to be stored on a proprietary/closed source system, hell what if there's some kinda fucking backdoor build in, who can fucking verify that? We're using Linux, end of discussion.
I was pretty flabbergasted as he's a nice guy and actually really likes windows!
Linux it became.5
Biggest hurdle for me is living with Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder. A neurological disease which affects the way my body makes melatoline. Basicly I have a set wake/sleep pattern which is extremely hard to deviate from. My sleeptime is 7am and wake up time 4pm.
I worked for 8 years forcing myself to be at the office at 9am because thats the social norm. Got 2 burnouts due to being sleepdeprived, various other issues and whatnot.
Finally discovered whats wrong with my body 3 years ago and found a awesome job at a company where I develop very complex systems which communicate with various stock exchanges.
Best part is that I work on my own and have the deal that I work about 3 to 5 hours a day on site. Then I go home have dinner, do some netflix and chill with the misses and after that I have the whole night just for me. When the world is asleep I am writing code, developing a complex system with NOBODY around me who can annoy me!
For me, this is the biggest hurdle I've overcome.13

I really fucking need to learn to relax/chill out.
Fucked up something at work a few days ago but it didn't seem to be that big of a deal.
Then, yesterday, someone put a ticket on my name from the person/account I fucked something up with.
I spend yesterday evening and this morning worrying so much that I literally constantly had to talk myself down/calm
Asked this morning if it would be fixable easily because I couldn't hold my nerves anymore.
"oh yeah that'll take just a few minutes, just put the ticket on my name!"
I seriously need to learn how to control this 😞15
How do I know my office is pretty chill?
My lead dev just sent me a text with:
"U suck penis"
I said "wow, uncalled for"
And then he said:
"U r uncalled for"
Well alrighty then18
How i got to devRant.
Boss comes in, sees me super chill.
Other people enter, boss sees me not chill.
Sends me an email and says "Enjoy".
I love this guy :')
Ps. Hope he doesn't expect work today9
I'm a week into my new job right now. What do I love the most about it?
Learning things all day long and getting paid for it!
I'm learning about hosting things, DNS, cyber security, configurations, Linux (although my current skill set with Linux has been enough for now) and so on!
Hell, easy day today (not that many tickets) so decided to start learning Ansible! Next to that I've gotta learn vim (it just autocorrected that to cum.... O.o), work with hosting panels, mail stuffs (dns, debugging etc etc) and so fucking on.
The boss hasn't been at location yet which will happen tomorrow but he seemed like a very chill guy.
I love this!23
TLDR: I wrote one of my firsts codes to help my father. Was really excited after it worked, nobody cared. F*ck them (not really).
So my father comes and says he needs me to help making a simple presentation. Just a title and slides with images. It seemed to be an easy task so I'm like "sure, why not?". So I told him to email the images and I would have the presentation made in no time. The next day I recieve like 30 mails containing from 4 to 10 photos of boats (yes, boats). I stay chill and have the brilliant idea of automating the process with python, just to learn a bit more.
I took some to read the documentation of the modules I was going to use, then write a simple code and bam! In 3 hours I have a presentation with images in it. I open it, every image was 4 times the actual slide and all of the images were randomly rotated, it still was the most rewarding moment I've had in months :') I wanted to show it off to my brothers, so they came to my desktop, saw it and all I recieve was a "cool". Not a good "cool", a "meh" kind of "cool". So I thought it was because of the size bug.
Fastfoward some hours, now every image gets scaled into the slides prefectly, in the correct angle, etc. I tell my dad what I made and he says "yeah sure, the problem is that I need you to give them to have subtitles". He wasn't even impressed. My heart hurt a bit.
I could totally automate the subtitles too (and did it), but what hurt the most is that nobody cared for what I was so pationate about. I'm so fascinated with coding that it replaced all my gaming habits, and now all I do is learn. I want to dedicate a good portion of my life to this but at that moment it seemed nobody in my family cared about it. So this rant is for all those f*ckers that I love but don't know how much my code means to me.21
What should you do when you find dfox ++ your rant?
Wrong - To take screenshot and post about it and say you are feeling like a celebrity.
Correct - Stay calm. Chill.
As a full time remote employee it gets lonely. Im getting ready to turn my home into a co-working space :
* Plenty of space with tables and couches
* Gigabit Internet backed by enterprise networking gear
* Lots of fresh ground coffee
* Local Kubernetes server !
* dog friendly chill space
* kid friendly play areas during the summer
* Mountain home with backyard hiking trails , wildlife lookout (wild deer live in my back yard), and fireplaces
What else would you want in your co-work space-at-my-place (TM)?13
What is the most ridiculous over-the-top "startup" thing you've been the victim of as a developer?
Alternatively, what kind of weird startup luxury would you absolutely love to have at your company?
For me, at various companies I've worked at/visited:
1. Hammocks & fatboy beanbags. Current employer has a "Netflix & Chill" corner with nice couches, and a small gym. I have encountered isolation/flotation tanks at the office of one of our partners... which is cool, but over the top in my opinion.
2. A fully automated aquaponics garden in the lunchroom. Was awesome, until some fish died and started to rot.
3. One hoverboard per employee, at previous employer. I splashed hot chocolate milk in an arc over three desks. A coworker broke his ankle while watching me spill chocolate milk.
4. Daily scrum standup meetings, on socks, in a big bouncy castle. Not kidding. Fucking ridiculous... (but secretly fun). That employer also had spiral slides between all floors, a tiny half-pipe with tiny skateboards, and someone who rode a unicycle way too much. It was a fucking circus. Stuck in the office of a Fintech company.
5. Soldering bench (at my current company), with drawers full of breadboards, servos and electronics components. Completely unrelated to my work, but it was my idea. It's just great to build a simple kits together with another random coworker while brainstorming platform features & refining specs... much better than meetings with bullshit slides.
6. Unlimited energy drink. Developed a serious caffeine habit (15-20 cans a day), and almost got a stomach ulcer. Not beneficial to employee health.
7. I really do love working from home + unlimited holidays. Just being able to honestly say "fuck you guys, I'm gonna get drunk and play games today", and at other times working until 4am and sleeping in the next day, or taking a week to work in a park in Rome... It makes work truly feel like my favorite hobby. Combined with a good sprints and curious/ambitious people, you can easily track productivity anyway.20
Don't develop depression, develop a personality instead, be more outgoing and outspoken, work out, dress better and make your life shit that goes beyond coding.
Tired of people in tech being this way. Everyone acts as if monkeying away on the keyboard makes them some sort of autistic genius that is too good for everyone else.
Some of you have the social skillset of a fucking potato.
You code dude. Most of you develop websites...chill the fuck out.54
!rant Decided to use the DevTools audit thing to try to improve my personal website. An embarrassing number of hours later and I finally have to tell the perfectionist in me to chill.14
Just found this gem on Twitters API...
When your app gets too excited they return status code 420 to tell you to chill! 😂😂😂
Fyi : For the non web-devs out there 420 is an invalid http code.5
*Makes joke in dev community*
RandomGuy: "well actually, that's not correct. The truth is blah blah blah"
Can you please just for like 5mins enjoy the joke and have a laugh?
All you're doing is stroking your own ego.5
So Twitter apparently used http status code "420 - Enhance your calm" to notify the client that it was sending too many requests (basically chill the **** out). Note the status code number as well 😁

It's Friday and my boss let us off work early...
So imma just chill and try to catch the sun5
This one hits home a bit.
So my friend from my first college hits me up, asks about what's going on and shit. It's all chill, we took a bunch of programming classes together, so it we weren't intimate friends just kinda familiar with each other. He says he's having trouble finding work, they all turn him down due to a lack of experience. I suggest we work on a project together. Anything. He thinks it's a good idea and we plan to meet up.
We meet up, long story short decided on an Android app. I failed setting up git but whatever, I'll fix it at home. He seems excited, I'm excited...
...Never heard back from him again. Won't answer texts, Skype, anything.10
Beginner: I wrote 1,000 lines of code!
Intermediate: I deleted 1,000 lines of code!
Expert: I prevented code from being written!1
I'm surprised by the ability of coworkers to get on my nerves. Here's an example...
Me: "Just upload those files you idiot! I got called up three times all because you couldn't upload this thing!"
Co-Worker: "Chill bro, I've got it all here safe and secure on my computer"
(In mind: Should I do to him what Walter did in breaking bad.... Drown him in a vat of acid. Saves me the trouble of hiding the body)5
Everybody boasting about lots of projects on github, and tons of stuff to show for.
Those that don't - are usually stressed that they don't have anything to show.
I work at a big-ish company, and we have tens of people in IT. Some of them are OK, others are gods.
Today I looked at their github profile. What do you think I saw?
Hello world applications?
Forks with 1 line of change?
kind'a... That's for the people that have the richest profile. The rest - at most have a couple of projects with 2 files in them:
So just chill. Do what you like, don't judge yourself too hard, and try to also make some money.
Less stress, be happy.15
Hot take: PHP is pretty good nowadays.
I'm a Laravel dev right now and things just get done so quickly. Every language has its problems but the meme of PHP hate seems to be made more out of ignorance these days. You could find just as many problems with any other language.
For those that say I'm biased because I work through the framework more than the language, I'd ask don't you do the same? ASP.NET, Java EE, the millions of JS frameworks, all these also make your life easier within their languages.
In the end, work with what makes you happy and productive and be done with it.18
So... my girlfriend has a very random work schedule. Sometimes she works 4 days a week sometimes only 1, sometimes only at the weekend sometimes not at all. If only there would be an app to track that... 🤔
She tried quite a few apps on the app store but they were shit/ugly/too complex..etc
Wait.. i’m a developer, i can do that.
She selected the colors, background, layout etc..
If she taps on a date it turns red indicating that is a workday, if a workday is tapped it turns back to normal color.
The main logic is:
//check if save is current month
She likes it.
Cool, so let’s build this! She has an iphone and my mac is still in the service center so i can’t build🙁
But its okay, i have a mac at my office, we can build there, the only downside is that is 40min of travel.
We take the subway, go to the office, build the app, make a certificate, install to her phone, everything goes as planned.
Coming back we were lucky enough to catch the bus that goes in 30 min intervals, we only had to wait like a minute so life is good 😃
I enter the house, chill down on the bed, pull out my laptop to close the project when a FUCK ME!!!!
I completely forgot to implement a whole else branch on start!!!
Soo the app does nothing when is opened on january 1😂😂
I guess that’s why we have testers and qa.. 😃9
Do you really expect that I can debug in a few minutes, a part of the software that I didn't build and have never seen before and have no knowledge of the external, third-party web service that code is reaching out to?
Dude, flippin' chill, take a walk, grab a drink, pop some popcorn and give me some time to figure out what the hell this code is doing so I can properly debug it!
You know what it turned out to be? Wrong test data used for the 3rd party service. So in essence... Nothing was wrong! Frickity frack!2
What a rewarding weekend!
Not once did I touch my laptop :)
Sorry, that was meant for RANDOM.. My bad18
When u did too much geocoding and map stuff. People ask me where u live, i be like I live at lat 43.8 lng -79.3. Find me homie, let's chill3
Sometimes I wish my colleagues could see the veins in my temple pulsing when they make dumb suggestions
1. Let’s switch to AWS because I read some propaganda somewhere that it’s good so blindly just picking up a corporate solution will be good for our company and solve all of our problems that I actually don’t know anything about.
2. Let’s switch our company email to google apps because I read some propaganda somewhere that it’s good so just blindly picking up a corporate solution will be good for our company and solve all of our problems that I actually don’t know anything about.
And I hate it when people do stupid things, I.e. when we’re on a business trip and the driver of the car runs a red light so we can get to the next red light five seconds quicker while everyone we just passed catches up to us. What the damn hell is the matter with you? Slow down, buckle up, chill out, and walk me through some meditation exercises because if my blood pressure gets any higher I’m going to strangle you for your stupidity.16
This code isn't working right, better check the log...
ERROR: There was an error.
Alright, cool, chill. Thanks for the top notch error handling. 👌2
First few days as a professional software engineer (c# .net) have gone decent. Made my first bigger commit today started working on a small new feature that requires more work.
CoWorkers are really nice, boss is cool, super chill over all. #feelsgood6

A Monday morning poem
I enter the bureau, feeling all relaxed and well,
my colleague looks up:
"Abandon all hope, welcome to hell."
This indeed, he doesn't say,
his face only twists a little in dismay:
"I need that schematic, did you finish it yet?
And there also some tests I'd like to get -
how was your week-end by the way?"
I start my computer, don't remember what I say ...
I grab some coffee, half a day is gone,
the PM pressures: "I want that asap done!"
I am cluttered in tasks and bullshit, too:
"Go fuck you right now - yes, I meant you!"
I don't say what I like to, I mentally punch a wall,
I crank some more code out and git-commit it all.
Some devRant on the lunch-break, some shallow talk,
I leave the building and take a short walk.
My mind rotates, I cannot enjoy the scenery now,
I return to my desk, and figure out what to handle and how.
But my plans are crashed by a colleague dashing in:
"I need you to do a test setup! I need to begin -"
I do the setup, I do some other stuff,
At the end of the day I feel totally rough,
Work is piling up even more -
"Tomorrow", I think and close the door.
At home, I just flop on on my bed -
I should be learning instead ... -
with some pizza and chill.
I think about sleeping, I hope that I will.
It is now Friday,
my brain is fried, too.
I am finished with this poem - how about you? :)7
instead of ranting why php sucks or your co-worker being an ass in coding, why not have some of this?12
How can you tell if someone's a node.js coder?
Don't worry they'll tell you.
What do I dislike about node.js?
Seriously you guys need to chill out. Your language is not the end of all other languages. It isn't going to replace PHP or Python or Ruby. It's not going to be the only thing around in 4 years.
Now shoo fly you're bothering me11
I’ve begun to notice a distinct pattern with devs. I realise it has probably always been there but Im just thinking out loud as Ive started to actively notice it.
*Dev has literally one problem with a library/framework/environment*
“Holy crap <NAME> is the worst thing ever!! its actually worse than an STD. whoever made it needs to quit making software and become a goat farmer” (paraphrasing of course)
What is it with us that the second we have difficulty with a library or framework we immediately brand it as a cancerous polyp on the anus of humanity?8
Decided to chill out after a stressful day's coding by firing up modded minecraft (ftb infinity evolved) and jumping on my server, within 20 minutes I'm in a computercraft terminal writing lua scripts, inside minecraft.
For fuck sake.5
Shit morning, I work in tech, so I guess it is related haha.
First, I wake up and it is cold. Like -12 degrees Fahrenheit. With wind-chill, feels like -29 according to Google. Then, while getting ready for work, my only belt breaks. Not a little, but literally splits in half! Fucking sucks, as my pants keep partially falling down and my shirt keeps untucking.
I go out in this cold that could kill a polar bear, go to start my car. Can you fucking guess? Dead fucking battery. Fuck! Now I am super late to work.
Make it to work, and guess what? My manager just promised 100% completion by Friday, and we are weeks behind! Fucking sucks... I think my coworker snapped, as he keeps hyperventilating at his desk for no reason. Oh and our best coder just quit...
Waiting to either wreck my car or find out my dog is dead when I get home...4
Today I had my first decent pull request accepted.
It wasn't the biggest problem, but it made a chrome extension not work, and the author and other users couldn't figure it out.
The author seems very chill and called me 'the man' and offered me a drink.
It felt nice.1
For some reason my manager freaked out after her non developer husband told her that each of the web pages for our main service would take months to build. Shit man its just static content with some animations here and there. It is a total of 15 pages and this dude estimated that I (as in yours truly) would only be able to do 2 per month. Bato stfu. Stick to banking (hopefully your time estimates don't suck ass there) and let me woo your woman with my frontend godspeed.
So what did I do?
Simple, asked her to show me one of the design models she already created on photoshop. Saved that thing to my computer and coded it at home. In 2 hours (It was originally one but my dumbass gor tab trigger happy with rm rf autocomplete so I had to do it again...fking dumb) and showed it to her this morning.
Eat a dick dude. The woman is already going apeshit over all the other shit we have to do plus working on her masters and attentind 100+ pointless meetings a day whilst still being able to be the best fucking manager I've ever had. I really don't need her freaking the fuck out over your dumbfuck estimates. Why in the wholy fucking world she listened to your dumbass is beyond me, probably stress made her freak out.
Its cool b.....I got it under control.
Fucking chill woman damn.
I enjoy listening to Metalcore while coding. It really helps me calm down and focus/concentrate (the irony of that whilst having someone scream right into my ears 😂). It also helps me chill and regulate my emotions better. Am I weird? What helps you focus and code better?32
Some of y'all are way too intense. Smoke some weed or something man shit. Y'all be acting passionate over nothing. Breathe in, breathe out22
So my HP laptop got a weird problem lately.
It doesn't charge when I plug in the charger(yes, i turned on the switch). So I began searching forums for a solution and then found out that there are so many people like me out there.
Then I was like ok, chill. There are many people like me, there must be a solution somewhere.
And after doing lots of research and trying all the solutions in the internet, the only thing that worked out is this ....
Step1 : turn on and the laptop and plug in the charger.
Step 2: Turn off the laptop.
Step 3: Now turn it back on and poof there you go, the laptop's charging.
And then I improvised the solution myself, which is u can replace the switch off part with Sleep which saved me some time.
And then whenever I try to show something my friends somethjng on my lap and the battery gets low, I do the ritual. For a brief moment their face becomes like dude I'm gonna kill you off, why the hell did u bring me here and now u r turning that off. And then I explain the history of my laptop.
Why HP whyyy ?12
When I’m at work I can’t wait to get home to work on personal projects only to get home with no energy and just procrastinate and/or play games entire weekend/afternoon.
Think is i also feel extremely guilty if i try to relax and do nothing, but at the same time able to understand that i need time to chill, just can’t get in a positive mindset about it. Am i the only one?10
Whenever a friend is raging over some bug i'm like:
Calm down... relax... write a rant... get schwifty...6
When you are into Dota2 trying to forget everything after stressful day and your manager messages you if you have spare 10 minutes to discuss next weeks' upcoming tasks.
Hell NO!! Let me play and chill.5
Ya know I don't mind Windows updates, I get it the OS needs its updates, so last night a pop up asked to when to do the update I thought hmm maybe Sunday (probably be driving my motorbike so I'll be out of the house), set the time and done.
Afterwards I go to shut my computer down and accidentally hit update and restart out of shear annoyance. So I wait it out, I thought well okay now it's done I won't have to wait. I go to shut down and it says "update and shut down", ... Right after I just updated...
I thought okay at least I'll be going to be knowing tomorrow I can just turn my computer on and play some games to chill for the night.
Oh but no, nope not gonna happen, I have to wait for it to "actually" update. Been waiting for about 30ish minutes :/
I think I'll make sure that updates don't happen anymore, I'm pretty annoyed at this waiting :/
Honestly wouldn't have had Windows 10 in the first place but somehow my computer decided to just install Windows 10 after I kept saying nope to it's damn pop-up, I just turned it on and boom "we're fuckingyour day up by installing Windows 10"
I actually take off anything that makes Windows 10 look like it and make it look more like win7.
70% done :/6
Just got a job as a junior PHP dev. Company is really chill as long as the work gets done. I can learn a lot here, and I am doing backend stuff mostly.
Got a great PC with 2 big screens and Ubuntu freshly installed by me.
Loving it so far!5
Client: I want a new feature for my chat bot. It should be able to rap.
Me: ... k
*monologue: wait u w0t m8*
Also me: Can you please go more into the details? It should be able to rap. Ok. But how do you want it to look like? How "strong" should be the discrimination level, for instance?
Client: It should beat ass, yo.
Inner me -> core me: Let us just ignore him. We won't be able to do it, since he isn't really explaining his needs. "It should be able to rap". We are not wizards.
Core me -> inner me: Chill. We will just use some insult apis, combine it with cleverb0t api et voila.
Me: Alright. I got an idea for it. I can do it within this week. And if you don't like it, I will ofc do some changes to it.
Client: Hmmm... that's nice and good. But within 1 week?
Inner me: I can't do magic and pull that feature out of my fucking ass!
Clients... clients... clients...
0. Don't expect us to be done in a few days. We are also humans. And not fucking machines.
1. Do us (all devs on planet earth. -Microaggression in 3, 2, 1..) a favor and (kill yourself) learn how to request a feature.2
Top advice to give to a new dev? Go back in time and download devRant, then buy a rubber ducky. Yes, I finally got mine 👍🏻3
We got upgraded from PHP4 to 7 last night and everything went fine without a hitch....yet why do a have a chill up my spine writing this?9
MY OPENCV SIDEPROJECT WORKS!!
Now I can chill in bed and control the computer with a laser pointer :)8
I wanted to be a dev when the only on campus job that paid more than minimum wage was titled "Web Developer". It paid 13 bucks / hour. AWYEAH.
The struggle is real:
"Honey, it's five in the morning. Go to bed!"
"But mom, I am programming this-"
"GO TO BED NOW!!!"
"Damn mom, chill. I'm going now"
Coders get yourself a electronics friend and electronic heads get yourself a coder.
I got a friend who studies engineering and really loves it and i do software development with a passion.
And we both love to chill with some drinks every now and then.
The result: We're currently creating a thing which fills you drinks via a button press on your phone.😁
Optional paypal payment for every drink for use at parties of course.(;4
Continued from previous post.
As the chill wind blows outside, the man picks up his laptop and phone. Slowly walks towards his bed and lifts an old hoodie. With easy he slides it on him, pulls the hood over his head. He turns around facing the window. On the back of his old hoodie, there is a design which looks faded and discolored. Below it some words which too are faded. He walks towards the window and glances on the street. It's still empty. All he can hear is the wind.
"Perfect", he says to himself and walks out his room.
As he is about to exit the building, he sees an Apache chopper passing above. It zooms above the street. A wild guess he makes, probably it's heading where he is heading.
His phone vibrates with a message.
The ammount of digging I have to do in order to fix something or building the mindset to do something i don't want to.
I have a mental block regarding people telling me what to do. I consider myself a pretty chill dude, but when someone says "do this" my mind automatically goes into "oh fuck that" mode.
I hate being this way, wish I could just switch that shit off and work on what i am told and be done with it.
I can spend all weekend fucking around with php. But the moment someone tells me to do something at work with it I start dreading it
This applies to damn near everything in life except for anything that has to do with my children.
My dad was neglectful as fuck, that itself makes me overly paranoid of making my children feel the same way I did growing up. Just wanted to throw that out.
It seems I did some progress today! Thanks Dr Devrant!
Dr Devrant: tell me about your father
Me: motherfucker sucks camel balls2
I recently got a notification that said "the are 590 new rants since your last visit" or something like that.
At the time that I got that notification the last time I logged on was only a day or two ago. And I'm not even subbed to that many people!
You all need to chill the fuck out. It shouldn't be healthy for you all to be this angry all the damn time.2
Honestly, i hate math or actually i hate that i suck at it. I graduated CS and if u put a math problem any bit more advanced than basic linear equations i will turn red. I wish i was good at it. I think if i was, id be able to do much more cool shit because combining math and the ability to control a computer basically makes you a demi god.
If i had some free time i’d love to go over the basics on khan academy or something. But free time doesnt come by a lot coz we’re too busy trying to make money and id rather just rest and chill when it does.
Tho if a cute girl offered to tutor me in that free time i’d definitely say yes 🧐15
Tough days are standard are they not?
A good ritual is forcing yourself outside and get some fresh air, don’t have a single thought of what it is you were doing and just destress.
I also find punching something therapeutic aswell so there’s always that option 😅
Rapid firing some mini rants.
Fuck people that go on vacation and post 100 pictures of it. Chill out fam. I can guarantee you that 95% of your followers don't give a shit. Keep the posts minimal; 3-5 is ideal with 5-7 being acceptable.
People that post shit like r/whooosh in the comments on posts can suck a dick. That's not necessary asshats.
Why the fuck do the Android versions of every major app suck ass? Like c'mon man. It's the most widely used mobile OS. Take Apple's dick out your ass and fix this garbage. (I get that supporting the cheap ass devices that never get OS updates is one thing, but ffs im using a Pixel. Get your shit together.)
This TED talk was brought to you by Stuxnet. Thanks for coming.7
There's a lotta memes about Google spazzing out whenever you log into a new device, but Fitbit is even worse lol
I not only get a notification that my Fitbit's battery is low, I also get a fucking email about it.
Like y'all chill out. I know it's low.
I'm sure this can be disabled somewhere, but I'mma probably get a new watch soon so I'm too lazy to deal with it6
So... I had this assignment. I was chill, had plenty of time, so I wasted hours playing videogames and also spent some learning programming. Then, at 3 am, after spending 2 hours leveling my first character in runescape, I gaze through the clock on my pc and notice the date was the 9th, the assignment was due tomorrow! SHIT
I RUSHED TO WORK AND SPENT THE WHOLE NIGHT CODING (it was for a programming class I took at the uni) HOURS OF HOURS OF STUPID MISTAKES MADE OUT OF SLEEPYNESS.
Until I made it.
I send the assignment, everything is cool. I watch the clock a last time before going to bed and fuck! The clock was in mm/dd/yyyy format! Don't know how the fuck it changed itself and how the fuck I didn't notice there was something wrong with the date. I still had 5 days remaining :(
May I request the world to get their shit together and choose just one global date format?
PS: my normal date format is dd/mm/yyyy11
What would you change if you were the owner of a site like devrant?
I've been in devrant for weeks now and the thing I like the most of it is the community (at least most of it).
If you are going through a bad time, they wish you well.
People here also seem to have very decent work experience.
In general, they seem to be open towards other technologies and honest about their shortcomings.
I also like that the site (for better or worse) is not insanely moderated.
For example, in reddit, it's very easy to get a post removed because it doesn't abide to the rules. They can be rudiculous strict, and mods can be trigger happy.
I'm not denying the existence of any moderation here, but for example I've seen some pretty graphic sexual comments, and I appreciate that anything goes (except being a dick ofc).
And I guess that the fact that the community is so chill has to do with that, there's not a huge need for moderation (unless I'm totally oblivious).
But how do you keep a community like that?
I've seen people complaining about the influx of new users and the spam of shitty memes.
How do you keep devrant cool while letting new people join?
I think a necessary thing is that you separate the people into 'universes' and each universe has a limit of x users. And somehow the users are distributed in a way that the average level of 'user likes the universe they're in' is maximum.
Now, how do you create that? Not sure, maybe you let users vote whether they like the other users or not (such votes being hidden to others ofc) and let users switch unis if they don't like them.
What ideas do you have?9
I go to my day job and people ask:
'So what you going to do with your 3 days off?'
'I'm going to code'
'Noooo you should relax and chill'
So I'm a BI consultant, been doing this for about 6 years now, and I'm pretty good at the data stuffs. Now I had to complete a project for a client where we call a web service and it had to be done in .NET. I wrote a console app in C# that called the WS, dumped the data then a stored proc processed the staging tables into final tables that our visualization tool can consume.
It works, it's done.
Mind you I'm not a pure .NET developer.
And now that it's completed and working this fucking .NET dude that works for my client is basically giving me an attitude talking about "why wasn't it done as a Windows service? Blah, blah" Like WTF!!??? I get that he's the C# BSD but like chill bruh!!
It's annoying as fuck having to work on projects that are not your area of EXPERTISE and then be ridiculed by other elitist assholes about it.
Doesn't happen much, but fuck it's something I hate about dev. FYI, if it was the opposite I would just be asking questions for understanding, not being a sarcastic prick.
I met a really really nice guy who I'd love to meet irl, @ribchinski
He's the type of guy who's so chill you'd want to fuck a goat with him, you get me?14
I recently came across my old interview assignment code which I had written while I was still in college. Oh my God, it was cringy! It was such crappy code 😂
My coworker (who had interviewed me) saw it too. He was surprisingly very chill about it, saying that the code is not bad, it just shows a lack of experience. I think I will choose to believe him 🙃4
If your client doesn't know what the fuck he wants to see on his website even with all text and images included - don't take this fucking job.
They will let you choose a template and you end up switching it 5 times. "Oh we don't like it. What else do you have? Oh, this looks better." Next day "We don't like this theme anymore. We want to switch to what we had before."
If people can't draw their home page on a paper I tell them go fuck yourself straight in a face. I always put these people on my reference list so my future clients know I'm straightforward, not lazy, not low skilled, but honest with dumbasses like some of my previous clients.
You are asking for a basic website with 5 pages, you have a shitty budget and then I have to customize the entire theme and tweak every fucking possible element in CSS, HTML and PHP. Go fuck yourself. All you get for your money is WordPress with 15 min consultation how to copy paste your shit and save it. Never do fixed budgets, never work on projects like this if it's under $500-1000. Meet with the client to understand him/her better and see if he is a jackass-perfectionist or a chill person who won't be picky.
That's my memories of being a freelancer, trying to get any job for any budget just to build my portfolio. Never going back to this, at least not for small businesses with less than $5,000 budget. Reading people before you start working with them is a good thing.2
I wanna make you feel what you have brought into my house!!
I was working with security cameras once in a home automation project. One of those camera particularly stand out by offering a cgi without password request to view and change the current passwort and username.
Seriously wtf is wrong with you? I mean this thing automatically connects to an internet service offering everyone to connect to it with that passwort and username. And I know some of you might say "hey chill the cgi is only available on the wifi" - dammit no. Security is a lifestyle do it complete or get the fuck out. God knows what other mistakes there might be hidden in that thing screaming out to everyone to watch me taking a shit.
But that's not the end of it. My company arranged a call to the technical support of that camera so that I can explain the problem and a patch gets released. Those guys didn't give a shit about it and were even laughing at me. Fuck you!
So whoever is responsible - I will find you - and you will never see me coming.4
Look here sir. If I have raised 12 defects on the feature you were working on its not a personal attack... I am not trying to publicly humilate you or doubting your ninja coding skills. We are on the same team. Just trying to make a better product that's my job as qa. So chill out with passive aggressive comments on the tickets.
You don't hear me making a peep when you take my name and say I missed the issue if someone higher up points out the same defects.1
I'm at a church right now because of ties.
I'm a post christian agnostic.
I'm so not chill right now.
OTOH, 1k internet points yay13
The perfect valentines day gift. Suitable for late night coding and chill. Doritos roses sold out online, so my husband made this one himself! 👌1
Product gets launched in 2 hours. Just casually updating the documentation. Nice chill day. Everything tested and validated.
Then some random f**king designer comes barging in vomiting all these "necessary" features to the product owner.
This was yesterday. The designer and product owner are currently complaining to us devs that there are bugs everywhere...
I need a beer.3
2. Music "development" (I suck tho)
3. Netflix and chill, just without Netflix
4. Trying to write a book and procrastination is going great so far
5. Cats. Are. Life
Got informed that there is a bug in production that needs to be addressed on top priority.
Me opens Android studio to check.
Android studio: chill bro2
What's the point in having a relaxation/fun/chill zone/room in your company when you never have the time to use it except maybe on your lunch break? 🤔🤔3
It's that time of the month where I sign out of social media again. I offloaded all my social media apps thus. I intend to stay offline until March. I'll probably deactivate sometime along the way...
Because if I deactivate soon, people would know that they have to reach me via SMS and ask how I've been. I don't want that. I'd feel pressured into coming back into social media again. For now I don't want to be bothered by anyone I know IRL at all.
Tasks this sprint in my remote work are heavy as hell. Also, I have to focus on getting a desk job. I am preparing for grad school, and I am rather excited skilling up in HackerRank and DuoLingo. That and I have to catch up with the tech communities I've committed myself into; tech communities that I've neglected attending to because of the demands of my former job.
This also means I ain't going to church starting this Sunday. The senior cantors can manage their Sung Mass and Sung Office without me anyway.
Also to be honest, I want to take a break from God and the Blessed Mother for a very long time. You see, church day is a very emotional affair for me, especially whenever I attend Tridentine Mass. But right now, I need to focus on pulling myself together. I cannot have my emotions running rampant in my brain and overloading my circuits, especially that I am still very angry at my former employers.
Taking stock of my goals, such as grad school, I felt that I've neglected the secular aspect of my personality.
So I ain't going to church for now. I also already asked the Third Order of Carmel chapter I'm in to put my temporal vows on hold too. Fortunately my village priest spiritual director isn't the chatty type and never texts me first for any reason whatsoever, so I can disappear without him noticing.
I just want to think about nothing but code code and code for now.8
Ya sure 0-2 yes experience with all those requirements + 5 more items hidden cuz of my tiny screen.
What is even more interesting they would like that person to know Swift UI.... It's not even out of beta ....
Also must know C#? For real... Those people do xamarine and native projects and they r not even a software company, they sepcialize in architecture
I hate it when people do this, like take the best at lowest price, that poor Dev is busting his ass to get your job done and you take the profit and give him the remaining change?
Hope this world doesn't get worse than it is....
By the way, job is for Full stack iOS developer 🙄18
People need to stop bitching about the Apple and Microsoft products announced. Just chill out and keep on coding. I want to see rants about developing not petty arguments.
Start-up I'm working for as a front-end dev is pretty nice. I have good hardware, free coffee and my coworkers are all decent people. My boss is chill, and I have flexible work hours.
There is this one policy for writing code, however. And I simply cannot understand it, nor can I ignore it because of code reviews: no comments in production code.
I mean, what? Why? Comments are nice, and they make life easier for the future maintainers. At least let me put a small two-liner explaining why I did stuff this or that way. But no, I only get to explain it verbally (once) to the person reviewing my PR. Why, man?9
Spent 3 hours today digging through 3rd party libraries, trying to get them all to work together nicely.
The solution? A one line fix in my own source.
This is how I figured out I figured out how to fix my proxy settings.
Can not Netflix and chill (work) anymore.
Doing some code on a rainy night while listening to "Kavinsky - Nightcall"..
What's better than this?8
Today I bring bad news. My little coding companion (little degu) in one of my past posts has done something to its back leg/paw whilst taking a fall off my brother's leg. My younger brother wasn't careful enough and the goo was unlucky enough to land on the floor injured. My feelings towards my brother and what he has done are still something I'm not sure about.
We took the goo to the vet as the goo was in severe pain. The vet gave the goo some morphine for the pain. It stopped looking stressed after a while and then it was completely chill. I was just so glad (and still am) that it's not feeling the excruciating pain it felt before. Because we don't have insurance, the price for the emergency consultation alone was quite high, but at this point I really didn't care about money...
The goo is spending the night at the vets where it will be free of pain and in the morning, the vets will x-ray the goo and see weather it can be mended. If it will not be able to be mended, the goo will have to be put down. But even during the x-ray or surgery process, the goo can die. Small animals and goos are at a higher rate of dying under anesthesia than other animals simply because you cannot feed them tubes. I just really really hope this will be okay.
Thank you for listening,
Taken a day off due to sickness, boss calls and said “can you fix an error on xyz website? it's urgent.”
I said No, I'm in hospital I can't. Even though I was at home.
He said “please look once whenever you'll reach home.”
Idiot got no chill.

My client thinks Internet Explorer is the only Internet Browser in the world. I argued with her for 10 minutes then I noticed she felt a bit stupid. I was afraid she might stop further payment so I said "I was just joking, you can chill now".1
spoiler: not a rant
sometimes you just gotta take some time out from looking at the monitor and chill like it's the infinity.

Okay. So I have a long weekend though starting tomorrow and can't mountain trek this weekend.
What to do?
a. Spam easiest freelance jobs
c. What's your bet?11
I've really struggled to make friends with people who code... and it's been absolutely frustrating. Does everyone in this industry have a god complex or something? Everyone I try to make friends with ends up being super narcissistic and self obsessed it's crazy. One of them wanted to be my mentor a while back, and we still talk occasionally, but after getting to know him I decided I didn't want to learn from him. It turns out he only mentors people to showboat his greatness and claim later that all their success is directly his doing. I decided I wasn't going to be one of those people and I only ever had 2 sessions from him. One of the best choices I've ever made. But I've found a lot of people who are programmers tend to be a lot like him. A lot of them I talk to will hit me up to brag about themselves or what they've done. But none ever ask what's been up with me or how my journey is doing? Is this just a normal thing in this industry or am I just meeting terrible people. It's made me appreciate my slightly dumber friends, cause at least they care about me and it shows.
More a rant than anything, but genuinely curious if anyone else has this issue... I'm starting my bootcamp soon and I'm hoping to make friends but I'm so concerned about this it's kind of giving me anxiety.14
Ya ya MS bought GitHub... Like anything is gonna change now. Chill. Not even the API will be shifted sideways, MS will lose so much money if they fuck this one up that they won't risk doing anything stupid.
GitHub will likely stay the same, and who knows, maybe will even get new features. Am I the only one here who's excited/curious about this??5
What do you use YouTube/NewPipe for?
I am using it to fall asleep when nothing else helps. Boring YouTubers are good for such a reason, guys lol.
I use it to do sport, to chill, to game, to be productive, to learn, to have some noise when I am bored (e.g. eating).
Offline music while taking a shower.
So tell me... What do you use it for?6
A lot of devs I meet are pretty cool but a handful, including some on here, seem to think the world revolves around them and they deserve to have the ground dusted off in front of them.
That's fucking narcissistic and you need a reality check if you're like that. It's great you're passionate about your knowledge but you're not out here taking down terries and saving children from burning buildings, like calm down with the self righteousness
Just had to get that out after one too many "how dare anyone looketh unto me unless I request it in advance" posts. Like chill out, you're not that special 🙄14
Well, today was a fun day playing with Qubes OS. I really did nothing really difficult, I created a template for multimedia pruposes (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Spotify and VLC) based on debian and then create a domain based on that same template.
Still need to fix the screen tearing, but it is nothing really serious, in fact I probably just change the graphic card to the integrated on the motherboard to see if something change.
Probably the next issue will be set a few domains for specific issues:
- Dev [personal]: This will be used for my personal projects.
- Dev [non personal]: For those times I collab with someone / not my stuff
- [√] Work: mail, msTeams, whatever from my job.
- Bank Stuff: I can asure you that
- [√] Multimedia: chill n stuff
and thats all for now.
PD: Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V Will be a nightmare xD6
Ok, I've always respected my PM and took everything on me, but since a while I start getting bored at work and realised many wrong things with the company and management in general.
So, brief contextual situation for you guys, I used to be very shy, unconfident and submissive. That was 2 years ago. Now am much more confident and got my own techniques in managing my constant "in the moon"-mind and relational discussions with colleagues. No more stuttering and am now answering on the spot and focussed on the discussion.
So I was having a nice day extinguishing fires on our website, this evening my PM stressly-rushed into my office (which I share with 2 other colleagues), and pressured me into giving a phone call to some developer for a situation clarification: a Json endpoints seems to truncate text after some characters.
Just came back from the loo (not sorry for the details), had my thoughts about something else, as usual, and I was just like "chill, let me get my mind together and prepare myself to be on point for this phone call". Told her I need a few seconds and she was like "now now now" knowing me I'm a bit laid-back.
Grabbed the phone, saw she was laughing (always laughs whatever I do, I must be very funny) and went talking about me to my colleague (not backstabbing but like "I don't get why he needs to get prepped for a phone call"). I managed the phone call like a boss - like usual since I got more confident -, my pm left, I finished the call, went to her to tell her my conclusions on our issue, asked me if I checked the contract with our CMS company.
Told her nope, the Json is compatible with our DB-manager's API.
She coldly answered "right, will do it myself then", I was like ok, I know you won't do it, I'll get it done.
In 15 minutes I found the contract, notified her, analyzed it, and wrote a technical email to support.
Seriously, stop taking me for some retarded person and let me breathe
There is this dude called Richard Eng which is sort of famous for 2 things:
First: he is known as *the* Smalltall evangelist of mothern times. And he constantly writes about it. Which is fine since he tries to attract new users to this beautiful and simple little language.
The thing is, saying "use this because that is shit" is never going to convince a community, specifically one as potent as that of the JS community. And to make it worse...the dude links his reasoning about bad languages to articles he wrote. As in "this is shit, look at my completely biased article regarding why its shit"
Once he is confronted about it he links back to his own writings. Much like christian fanatics do
"good is real because it says so in the bible"
"but how can you trust that resource?"
"Because the bible is the word of God"
"and how do you know?"
"Because it is in the bible"
Circular arguments like that cannot be taken seriously. And what this guy does for the Smalltalk community hurts more than it helps really.
Claims like those are all around us. If we were to believe or consider them depending on who said what then we would never have the amazing cluster of tech choices that we have.
Take c++. It is absolutely powerful and gives you the ability to do pretty much anything. If we were to take Linus Torvalds's word about it being shit and only having subpar development we would miss on absolutely powerful tools.
The same came to me from Evee, writer of "PHP a fractal of bad design" or the "Node.js is cancer" article.
You are never going to please anyone with anything. I go by live and let live, and whilst I don't like some technologies I certainly don't look down on those that do.4
Before I learned software development, API sounded like a kind of beer.
Today I used the term so often that I have in fact recently tried to order an API at a bar.1
Best team experience?
Well, first I'd like to mention that after some more experience in the field since, I realize that this company had some pretty terrible management infrastructure...
Nonetheless, I think my best team experience had to have been during my first programming job because my project manager... WAS A FREAKING DEVELOPER! It wasn't his job to be a developer obviously, but we were a small team essentially developing waterfall style, and he had to pick up the slack now and then for certain issues. The man was a genius and everyone appreciated him because you could talk to him about anything dev related and he would get it. The rest of my team was also very chill too, so it was all in all just a fun experience, stressful as it may have been at times.
I have not since had such a diversified project manager 😟 but then again, not the PM's job to touch code...2
I was flash developer once, it was great when macromedia was around, then adobe acquired them, now flash is gone.
Years are passing and most of industry is the same as always. Trying to drag you into this rat race of learning new amazing technologies, amazing projects that are actually doing same job as 50 years ago but using more memory and cpu cycles. Because all has it’s roots in algorithms from previous centuries.
So youngsters loose your best life time, be innovative by doing nothing more then copy paste from stackoverflow and duck typing shitty code.
Be a slave and sit in the amazing office, that has everything but not your real life that meanwhile is sucked by corporate squeezer till your last breath.
Be piece of shit that can be kicked around.
Watch youtube, facebook, instagram or whatever social network that shows you pictures that are fooling your mind that you’re someone special and you need this stuff.
Then be ready to suck some dicks to earn money and buy stuff you don’t need, live where you don’t want and do what you don’t like. You piece of shit.
Well that’s what disappoints me from my tech stack.
Now chill out, turn off your electronic gadgets, go out and enjoy real world.2
'nother "teacher" story here.
Little background knowledge: I'm repeating the things he told us about at home and try to learn them by myself. I use the newest Visual studio and .NET framework version.
In school we have pretty old PC's and even older .NET framework. But let this insanity begin...
As normally i entered my classroom a little late (I have a dangerous habit of ignoring my alarms) and sat down on my chair. We were only 3 people including me at that moment so everything was pretty chill. I ask him what our task was and something along these lines occurred:
Me: what's our task?
Teacher: you remember your shopping list program? I want a textbox in it next to the listview and I want it to show every listview item
Me: that doesn't make sense
Teacher: yadda yadda just do it
Me: kaaaaay, anything else?
Teacher: actually yes! Please use inheritance.
Me: *baffeld* that doesn't make any sense at all. We have 5 different fruits; you tell me i should make a class per fruit!?
Teacher: yes of course! This is how professionals do it all the time. Please give them a distinct attribute, too.
Me: *angry* I'm. Not. Gonna. Do. This. This is total bullshit and also really bad coding style. I'm not going to teach myself something that doesn't make sense at all.
(Note: i know how inheritance works and he knows that too)
Teacher: You have to do it, you won't be prepared for final exams otherwise!
Me: leave my exam prep to me. I won't do this.
Teacher: *grumbles* fine
Later that very same lesson i got a .NET compatibility error. I couldn't work because I wasn't allowed to change anything on the installation nor to install a newer framework. So basically he told me I should've used 'sharpdevelopment' (which is not able to do windows Forms, but hey who cares) and this would not have happened. I was so furious at that moment i just took all my stuff, told him that I work 'from a place where i got decent software and space to think' and left the room.
Why did this person decide to become a programming teacher?7
So here's a rant I never thought I'd write.
I'm pretty happy with my current job. I'm working for a small non-tech business where I'm making a complete solution by myself. It's pretty chill just coding away all day and being my own project owner and manager.
The iffiest aspect is that my boss(es) don't know what (or if) I'm working on when I'm implementing a vital logging system, fixing bugs that cropped up due to implementing necessary, baseline security, and so on. They see a login page and figure the entire project is shippable, and when the login breaks because I'm configuring the wsgi for https the reaction is "it worked, why mess with it; just put it how it was". But I digress.
Today I got a job offer with a pay increase that made me exclaim "are you fucking serious" irl, in a business with a more professional environment consisting of senior devs, and with benefits I had never heard of.
I can't not accept, but that means just legacying the entire project I'm working on here. They'd basically be left with nothing after shelling out wages for me for these few months. Keep in mind this is a fairly small business who debated if they could afford this to begin with.
Disregarding whether they are willing/able to make it hard for me to leave, it stabs me in my scrubby dev soul to up and leave on a personal level.
They had a 3d printer at the other place though.15
Usually my workplace is pretty chill, but today something rantworthy happened!
During code review, I found this guy had styled each element inside his components using nth-child selectors. For instance, in a card the heading was styled by nth-child(1), the text was styled by nth-child(2) and so on... No use of actual fucking classnames.
When I pointed this out, he told me it was actually the better way of doing things because classnames increase the size of the HTML document!
He also claimed proudly that nth-child() is more efficient in performance (idk - anybody can confirm this?)
I'm the only "css guy" there so nobody could second my views. Posting it here so that I can show this to him tomorrow by demonstrating what opinion other css devs have on this and prove my concerns / convince him to change his code.7
Dear udemy, please chill. I am glad you found me, but I am not looking for a every-single-youtube-video type of relationship.5
[UPDATE] on my newly joined internship
Considering how corporate the organisation is, I'm surprised how chill everyone is. My team consists of mostly millennials, which is great!
Everyone is super helpful, I honestly thought it'd be shitty experience joining in and it'd all be so formal but none!
First few days I got no work, so I went and asked my mentor and he just laughed and said go home, watch Netflix, which I definitely didn't expected cause corporates
I got web testing work twice (sad I didn't get more, but in time it will increase), got some research work currently which is cool too.
Honestly, I wasn't excited to join as I didn't know what kinda work would I even get(it was pretty vague) but I'm glad I got this.
I'll continue to update here, and sorry I couldn't update any sooner
Cheers my dudes5
Finished downloading lots of tutorial videos. Now time to watch all of this. This is like Netflix for me. I don't watch much Netflix instead I watch lots of tutorial videos and practice them. Skills development rather than Netflix and chill. 😀5
I've literally ignored. My mates twice now , all I want is to chill and code.
I think other people don't get that. Honestly Xmas is far more draining then anything7
How can I just "chill"?!
Our project's demo is coming up soon and since we there only two in the team we have to work together.
I did all the coding and my so-called "team mate" just watched behind my back or refreshed the git!!!!
And we get the same pay. 😧😤
// This part of the code should never run
Came across that lovely comment when fixing a reported bug. Guess where the bug was? You guessed it XD1
Ahhhh.. just like last year I get to enjoy being paid for well... Hanging around in a hammock at a festival 😎3
At home: a glass of nice single malt whiskey, headphones on with some chill background music and that's all I need.
At work: First half an hour up to one hours goes into deciding what to do / waking up and having the first 2-4 cups of coffee.
Headphones on with some chill background music and I get into the zone for a quick moment before it's lunch time and it takes up to 1h after the lunch break to get back to the zone and multiple coffee cups.
In the afternoon I usually get into the zone and real speed with my work and quite often almost forget to go home :/
Nothing beats beeing allowed to pick when i come in for work. Also today is pretty chill. Building is halv empty and i only have to write a lil documentation for kubernetes :D
I think I might need to visit the doctor soon.
I just can't get hungry and if I do try and eat I feel like shit not even 10 minutes after. Only after many hours of going by without eating do i really feel hunger and can eat without my stomach wanting to kill myself.
Yesterday for example. Ate at around 1 o clock (without being hungry) and not even 5 mins later i was lying down in my couch feeling like absolute shit.
Didn't eat anything throughout the rest of the day and today I am feeling like I could eat an entire horse by myself.
I don't know what is happening to me. I am dropping pounds like crazy and been feeling super tired. Really creeped out at what the doctor might say about why this is happening.
I would like to think that is stress and nothing more.14
My PMs daughter is my daughter's best friend. My PM drops her off to spend the night regularly and were just like "ya man seeya tomorrow or monday or whatever". It's so odd and funny because he's also like 20+ years older than me but it's just all chill as can be. I know some PMs out there make devs lives hell.2
Hey everyone. Not sure if we're allowed to do this or not. If not, whoops sorry. Anyway, I'm Vylcas. New to DevRant and developing things as a whole. Currently know html, css, and python. Trying to get better and figure out which direction to go. Hope DevRant has some chill people for something with an emphasis on ranting. Really excited to start using this app to see whats out there. Guess thats all. Have a nice day!5
I usually find Fridays really exciting 'cause they mean the end of a long week of work and a nice weekend where I can just relax and chill or do whatever the fuck I want, And also because nothing really major happens regarding work happens on Fridays.
Till this Friday, my boss who I really respect and who I find a nice boss to work for starting complaining about the speed of an app we developed and comparing its speed with 2 other versions of that were built using different stack, different architecture and another environments. I explained that it's absurd to compare these and expect the same performance from 3 differents implementations.
He was not convinced and I just kept my mouth shut 'cause I don't want to explode in anger. Because of all Friday night sucked, felt all depressed, wanted to distract myself by watching a movie, but I didn't find anything that I liked, I remembered that a new episode of this series I watching will be coming out that night, when I went to my usual streaming website I didn't find it, and discovered that it'll be coming out on March 1st 😣.
I had no video games to play, didn't feel like coding. By then i realised that tonight will be another nigh where I would be crying myself to sleep... which happened.
I woke up this morning with a resolution that I will go out and do something fun.
Little did I know, my depression was still there, now it's 8pm, I spent the whole day in bed. I wish I had someone to talk to, I friends are all busy living and I didn't want to disturb them.
I have another chance to save this weekend by doing something on Sunday, otherwise next week will be a hard one with my current mental state.
Excuse any typos in my rant. I have no energy left.4
Go to work, go home all motivated like: oh once I'm home I can do this and that to finish my work, and it's fun and interesting. Or I vould study, or clean up, I'm totally gonna do something usefull!
Ohhhh look league of legends! Or bed! I'm too exhausted to do anything usefull. Better chill.
Anyone got advice for how to combat this? T_T5
ideal situation: programming in a chill cafe with nice coffee
reality: too busy drinking coffee, hasnt touched the laptop2
Whenever i want to chill out, play games and movies the computer is very supportive
"Here ya go fella ooo 20 chrome tabs on a conspiracy? Sure why not" but i swear to god the moment i want to be productive,
"What's that? Android studio? Why don't i triple the normal loading time, freeze for 1absolutely no reason ooo u wanna run emulator with that? Lol okay sweetie good luck"
"Sir do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, the WINDOWS UPDATE? Oh no you can't shut the door your house is practically OURS"
Guys i feel my computer is sentient. It doesn't want me getting too smart for ..reasons? Does anyone else feel the same way about their machine? I hope its not too late to start a revolution yet1
(Ok, I love js in general (specially with es6), but here's something I hate about the "ecosystem". Dont take this too srsly also)
Holy fucking gagged shit, these project readmes that start out for too long about the project objective instead of stating the actual thing/s the software does.
WHAT DOES IT FUCKING DO!?
STOP BEING FUCKING FANCY ABOUT YOUR PROJECT.
Jesus christ, people jacking off about their awesome tool and how it will make everyone happy. No one cares.
"shitsmoke.js is a framework that focuses on delivering truly reliable data with static checking enabled on deployment."
WHAT THE SHIT DOES THAT MEAN?
Gimme a bullet point with the goddamn features (not the fucking BENEFITS) and I'm done.
These are like layers of marketing bullshit texts you have get through, getting more technical as you go on.
But sometimes they never do a technical summary, THEY GO STRAIGHT INTO THE GODDAMN API. And the API docs belong to a docs site, there is github.io and packages that take care of that.
You're like a goddamn linguistic detective, trying to disect the meaning of these words to understand if some package is what you're looking for.
And I don't wanna visit another website to understand what it does either!2
I'm TIRED of developers arguing about which OS is better! Just because you ride a ferrari or a lambo doesn't mean you'll get through traffic quicker. GNU/Linux is a great OS, it lacks certain qualities, but so does Microsoft Windows, and OS X. None of these operating systems are perfect. I recently switched back to Windows from GNU/Linux after 6 years of being blinded by the stupid wars of the operating systems, and am now writing my own OS. Just. Be. Chill. With. Your. OS. And. Dont. Complain.5
Programmers after Writing some successful code be like:-
"Chill, chill just chill"
When that code went into Testing phase:-
"Where are you now? Under the sea.. Under the sea..."1
My friends do it for me, so does my wife.
It helps that my coworkers are my friends and they are devs, so there is that.
Other than that my phone would usually rang during the weekend nonstop with shit to do. I normally tend to stick to being at home with my wife and child.
My city is strange in that everyone and their mothers parties every weekend and people are usually friendly enough to involve everyone with anyone during the weekends. I like and dislike that (loud shit annoys me)
My dear boss is a weekend alcoholic, so there are null chances of making us go to work and if they do they let us chill during the work week.
Not only that, but the entire IT dpmnt is really friendly towards one another. We are one big happy family(we never fight with one another, not even the sys admins/network dudes.1
Boss while working at a computer repair shop, he was a chill guy and great guy to talk to. Didn't mind if I came in a little late and regularly let me leave early.
Regularly got fun stories like how someone's cd drive broke because they thought it was a bagle holder.4
Always check if you are on the test or the prod system at least 1000 times before cleaning up the customers database.
This happend twice to my team.... At least our customers admins were pretty chill and said they learned something from this.
When theres a few slight bugs in your app that need to be fixed, but theres no chill.
Do you want me to fix your fucking shit, or do you want to continue making me feel like shit? I understand it doesnt work, and it may not be satisfactory. But this doesnt give you a reason to make me feel bad.
It really frustrates me, I spent fucking weeks on this one single feature, that to the user appears basic as fuck, but on the backend, holy fucking shit. Many many many sleepless nights whilst developing it.
A little bit of appreciation would go a long fucking way.
Not to mention that without me, you wouldn't have this at all. Makes me mad as fuck.
Seriously. Fuck you too.1
Call with Customer for an upcoming software project (tone interpreted through rage)
them: "yeah we want to launch by end of march but our sales people would like to have a demo version asap, incl. structure of the forums and yaddayadda"
me: "earliest at end of feb"
them: "why do you need so long bro?"
me saying: "chill, we'll send you screenshots"
me (not saying): "because you ordered an azure based Active Directory as loginprovider at another company and our own white lable software needs to integrate that and we've never spoke about a demo version you mofos?"
me (also not saying): "and yet another partner that is working on the hardware component still hasn't logged into the API I crafted because he didn't knew how to send parameters to a REST API?"
I have a course at my university about personal data and it feels more than a law course than a computer science one. I asked the teacher why do we have to be taught that subject and how would we be able to use what we learn in real life and she got triggered, telling me that with just by coding I won’t achieve anything and i have to learn more topics and if I didn’t want to be taught this subject why did i choose the university.
I just made a question you fuckin butthurt, chill the fuck out.3
Some of the worst code reviews I had were at my 1st proper workplace which incidentally was the strictest one! I was such a lazy oaf and hated those.
Still don't like code reviews but I do admit those first ones did me a tom of good.
Nowadays when I am the one co ducting them I tend to be more relaxed and chill and not be a nazi coz I still remember the repulsion of my first ones ^^'
Client: "According to the Postgresql Version Support Policy, 9.3 will be expired by September 2018. That's only a few months away."
Me in thought: "Expired? Like a rotten egg? With an expiration date? OK, chill. His English isn't that good. Maybe he meant that support expires since its EOL."
Client: "We need to upgrade so that we can continue using the database."
Me in thought: "Yeah, he really meant "expired" in database too."4
Oh boi... that was a great and a shitty day.
Let us just see the positives tho.
A: Shopping in huge ass mall. (I hate Shopping, but not when it is about tech, cars, books, ahem playb... errrm just joking, food and Cinema I am all in.)
B: Visiting a place for animals living on the wild streets of Antalya. That place was right under the sun. It was not a building or anything like that. Near a well-known tower from the Osmanian Empire. There were a lot of kittens everywhere. The kittens were so cute. Omg. Most of them even had an own house. All of them colored in many different colors. Their houses have been donated by couples. Even the government helped the kittens by placing water refreshers with a roof above them. The man who is feeding them is someone who seemed to be like a poor man. He was very kind. I like him. We donated some money, but we could not do any more than that since we are not allowed to take them to Germany via air plane. Makes sense, right?
C: We made a boat trip. Oh boy... That was fucking awesome. I was allowed to get to the "nose" of the boat and chill there. I somehow found the confidence to take a group selfie with strangers LOL4
MongoDB really needs to chill the fuck out with their email marketing, daily emails plus frequent harassment from sales reps wanting to know why I downloaded their software is getting on my tits now.
Anybody would think I'm the first person that's ever installed the bloody thing.
Whenever I add an address to spam or unsubscribe it just seems like the origin address changes, having to rely on client side filtering, yayyy1
When you go to update your Mac think great I’ll go chill out for half hour, let it update and hit restart, then come back to your computer and realise Mamp stopped your computer restarting without entering a password. FFS rookie error put in the password computer restarts to update. “Calculating time remaining...” 40 minutes. I’m so fucking bored right now just staring at the screen and having a rant.1
So I have a pet peeve to talk about here, I'm excited for the Atari box as I have some inside information that is officially confirmed about it (unfortunately am not allowed to talk about it :-C) and I see people out there saying it is "an underpowered Linux steam machine)...
How the fuck are people coming to this conclusion when the specs, OS or anything technical about it haven't even been released yet?!
Why must people immediately assume that because it's not a standard windows PC it must be a piece of shit?
Boggles my mind that so many people can be so defensive and go on the offence without knowing anything.
Just so I can clarify, I'm a console gamer, Linux lover yet still develop for windows and the like so this isn't a biased rant and I know people will look at this, see the word Linux and go on the attack... So... Just... Chill?4
You know shit is going to hit the fan if the sentence "c++ is the same as java" is said because fuck all the underlying parts of software. It's all the fucking same. Oh and to write a newline in bash we don't use \n or so, we just put an empty echo in there. And fuck this #!/bin/bash line, I'm a teacher. I don't need to know how shit works to teach shit. Let's teach 'em you need stdio for printf even tho it compiles fine without on linux (wtf moment number one, asking em leaves you with "dunno..") and as someone who knows c you look at your terminal questioning everything you ever learned in your whole life. And then we let you look into the binaries with ldd and all the good stuff but we won't explain you why you can see a size difference in the compiled files even tho you included stdio in the second one, and all symbol tables show the exact same thing but dude chill, we don't know what's going on either.
Oh and btw don't use different directory names as we do in our examples. You won't find your own path, there is no tab key you can press to auto-fill shit.
But thats not everything. How about we fill a whole semester with "this is how to printf" but make you write a whole game with unity and c#. (not thaught even the slightest bit until then btw)
Now that you half-assed everything because we put you in a group full of fucks who don't even know what a compiler is but want to tell you you don't know shit and show you their non-working unfinished algorithms in some not-even-syntax-correct java...
...how about we finally go on with Algebra II: complex numbers, how they are going to fuck up your life, how we can do roots of negative numbers all of the sudden and let you do some probability shit no one ever fucking needs. BUT WHY DON'T YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ALREADY HMMMMM, IT'S YOUR SECOND LESSON, YOU WENT TO SCHOOL PLS BE A MATH PRO ASAP CUS YOU NEED IT SO MUCH BUT YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW PROPER SYNTAX, HOW MEMORY MANAGEMENT WORKS, WHAT A REFERENCE IS AND PLS FINALLY FORGET THE WORD "ALLOCATION" IT DOESN'T PLAY A SINGLE ROLE YOU ARE STUDYING SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT WHY ARE YOU SO BAD AT ECONOMICS IT MAKES NO SENSE I MEAN YOU HAD A WHOLE SEMESTER OF HOW TO GREET SOMEONE IN ENGLISH, MATHS > ECONOMICS > ENGLISH > FUCKING SHIT > CODING SKILL THATS HOW THE PRIORITIES WORK FOR US WHY DON'T YOU GET IT IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE BRAH4
How do you feel with not having motivation to work on/finish your personal projects?
I'm working 9 to 5 plus commute and at the end of the day I just want to eat some food and chill. But I keep beating myself up over not working on things that will improve myself.
Does anyone else feel like this while working full time?3
Trying to re-type a massive essay I lost because the app refreshed for some reason. I'll try to keep it short (spoiler: I lied).
Recently, I had a conversation with a couple of non-tech people about AI and the fear of computers making humans obsolete. I have some strong (borderline ranty) opinions about this, and thought I'd post here to see what reaction is get.
This is not a "machines will destroy us" post, it's more about the very legitimate great of losing jobs.
- AI is a tool. It's main use would to be help optimise the more complex routine tasks and free up people's time to be more creative in their jobs. Basically, it's the next step of automation.
- Human intuition can never be replaced. Sometimes, things just seem a bit off. Sure, an AI would avoid ever getting in that situation, but only if it had learnt it in the past. A human will always have to be at the helm of any such system.
- Achieving true intelligence and sentience is like trying to travel at the speed of light. The closer you get, the more challenges you face.
- Getting hyped by sensationalist news that claims the end is nigh because two computers optimised the language they used to communicate when trying to reach a goal is stupid. All this shows is that the tech is working as expected and the systems can optimise on the fly. To me, this was a pretty awesome moment.
Now, I'm not saying dystopia is impossible, neither am I saying that it is inevitable. Just like any tool presented to us, if we use it responsibly, we can make life and society a lot better.10
Hey dudes, who s in love with Soma.fm?
My favourite stream from famous DefCon chill zone:
Warning: Uncle Bob's speeches may appear in streaming time and hurt your feelings2
So, I'm on holiday for a week from Friday. Woo! The plan is to head to a cottage in the middle of nowhere with the wife and the dog and chill the fuck out for a while.
Just found out from my boss that, due to some fucking colossal mismanagement, I have to support a huge release for an architecture rebuild project from 10pm til 8am on Sunday night. While I'm on holiday. In the middle of nowhere.
Just watched Zombieland 2 in the cinema and the dumb blonde girl in the movie was so fucking sweet and adorable and NOT TO EVEN MENTION HOW HOT SHE WAS, but i fucking fell in love with her PERSONALITY, i know its an act but i also know there are people who exist with that personality, this is very weird to me because i fall in love by the looks, rarely by the behavior but i this time i love her because of her personality lol what the fuck is this
I didnt know it was possible to fall in love with someones personality like i dont even have the urge to fuck her just to love her for personality lmao
Aight im talking about this like we are exclusive but it was just a dumb but chill movie14
All the youtubers ranting about adpocalypse, watchtime and such for weeks now..
And tbh i didn't really care. But for fucks sake the AI youtube uses to recommend videos indeed sucks!
You know back in the days, when you listened/watched part 1 of a playthrough and were just fine with the upcoming video because it was part 2, 3, 4 and so on of the series?
FUCK THIS. How about now that you saw part 1 of Scykohs "Pokemon Snap Playthrough", watch some random fucking shit of jacksepticeye?
FUCK YOU. THENKS.
I used to fall asleep and wake up with some chill ass gameplays on my tv. But now I fall asleep with using my remote to direct myself to the next part of the video and wake up to some random ass content nobody wants to watch.
FRIGGIN FIRSTWORLDPROBLEM I KNOW BUT IT SUCKS.1
I can see your local web servers - http://http.jameshfisher.com/2019/...
This article pisses me off so much.
Can someone tell me what's the deal with websites being able to access localhost:3000?
Newsflash, jamesfisher.com:80 is open to everyone on the internetworkz!!1!1!!36
The joys of bring a Fullstack developer..
Sometimes beings junior Fullstack developer I find myself in tricky situations.
This past week I was invited to a meeting with all the front-end developers where we were presenting our software when a 500error popped up...( I was day dreaming looking out the window watching two birds hop around)Then I heard one developer ask what the problem was and another quickly replied "backend problem"... Still half asleep and deep in my new found interest in birds I blurted out "maybe the front-end is not sending the request properly".... Immediately the room fell silent... this sent a chill down my spine and I was brought back to reality, I looked round the room and everyone was staring at me like I insulted their mothers... I tried to make a joke of it but saying "Sorry I forgot this was a front-end meeting"... The lead architect who for some reason was also present then said "at least someone sees things differently"... And everyone laughed (although I'm not sure how sincere their laughs were).1
Close all internet shops tabs, find yourself a nice chill music like Erykah Badu or some ASMR record, measure your time (I use toggl) and have your tasks for today well planned. And set yourself deadlines. Short deadlines. When you fail to fit in one, you get to punish yourself in a mild way. When you do your tasks on time you get candy :D or some other shit like a good coffee or go out somewhere
I can see life is meaningless and the only reason of my short visit to this planet is to pass on my vain selfish genes.
But what drives me every day is the exponential trends of tech and the looming technological singularity in the 2040s. And the prospect of staying alive for billions of years mapping exoplanets, contributing in every way I can.
Until we reach a Type 10 civilization and beyond, I'm not sure when I might want to hang up my coat.
Still if I can't make it to the singularity, that's cool also, after all life is meaningless.
I'm chill with anything.42
My last job in Australia before moving to Japan was where I had my best boss. He was pretty chill about a lot of things and he was also a pilot and DJ in his free time. But he was also the no BS type of guy and would help resolve issues in a quick manner.
Also before moving to Japan, I did consult him about it and he was very supportive about it and encouraged me to do the move as it'd be a good experience for me.2
So, at my new workplace which completed another anniversary (my first) thought it's a chill place to work at.
Just heard internal bad bitching and stuff, fuck I hate corporate.
And there's this guy who must have watched a few episodes of Naruto and called Nine tails a wolf, a fucking wolf!
Then today during my introduction, the same guy interrupted me with a mock "This guy is a hacker and he can read all your messages"
I was very tempted to say what I used to do at my previous company but energy saving...
Ah.... I already don't like this guy6
When marketing gets overly excited about analytics requirements and you have more code in a page for stats than actual functionality
string action = day == "Monday" ? "Go to work" : "Friday" ? "Netflix & chill" : "Saturday" ? "Sleep all day" : "Sunday" ? "Get ready again for Monday" : "Code from 9-5";
I wrote nested ternary operators before and I swear I'd only use shorter conditions like the one below. 😳
string action = isTired == true ? "Get some sleep" : "Drink more coffee";5
I don't understand why twitter gives itself so much importance!?
I created some years ago with the wrong date of birth, now when I changed the date of birth to match the real one, they effing locked me out!
It took them around 4 weeks to send me a mail to restart my account.
Chill little bird, why so serious?2
I've already ranted about this, the hdd randomly broke over night. I was (i shit you not) just about to set up backups for it this day.
Being relatively new to linux but confident with bash and cli and stuff.. reading "I/O Error" as output of nearly any command on a server rented somewhere 150 km away from me was like a punch in the face.:D
It wasn't directly bad, but it was kinda sad, I had a (now don't laugh - a man gotta chill from time to time) minecraft server running there with tons of mods and we were multiple 100s of hours into it already..
But not only that, my projects weren't on any git or anything anymore (local copies were gone, guess what gitlab i set up proudly i used..) and there was no recovering these little loved ones, together with my website.
It was a black day, my group i had to work with in university doubted me because for them i wasn't able to manage a git server properly and i hope it does not happen again..):
1. The Case of the Craptop
Someone wants me to fix their permadead battery, cut-up charger, and what amounts to a laptop held together with GUM... all with software. The charger is like 6 bends from snapping entirely, and requires fucking with. Hard drive is on last legs. Battery's like $50 on its own.
2. The Fuckery Continues...
Wednesday, it's gonna be -30°F or worse with wind chill. School isn't closing. Normal temps are like 40°F rn, so it's not like it's usual weather or anything.
Fuck me. Again.
Today’s text chat:
Me walking near the river in the middle of nowhere with a cellphone.
- I need image from test server. Can you provide me that image ? I need it for my local environment to fix something ( writes details of how to get an image ).
- Can’t you go to test server website and get it by yourself ?
- But this image is on canvas element.
- Because frontend is drawing in on canvas so go to network tab and get the url.
- Ah yes I can do that
I have such small talks all the fucking time. They accumulate when I go out to chill during the day.1
Blindly copy pasted and executed commands from tutorial.
Just because it was faster to reformat sd card in the worst case ( raspberry pi ) than figure out what each one did.3
Well, I've got mostly devRant to thank for this new friend.
On this website he's called RAZERZ and he's a pretty cool dude. He has far more experience than me in programming, due to him actually being able to work (I love in the US on a Student Visa, so I can't work or I might get deported), but he is pretty chill anyways.
THANK YOU DEVRANT FOR EXISTING6
Yesterday we ( me and few other students who showed up to lecture ) had an interesting bonus mini test at course about software architecture. At the end our proffesor showed us this youtube video
And the task was ... write which architectural patterns and styles best describe men's brain and which women's.
Just wanted to share this creative exercise1
FUCK YOU VODAFONE!
My internet broke down the weekend, 4 minutes after I left my house on Friday at 9.04am.
Issue resolved after work at 9pm, broke down half an hour later.
Total silence. Providers status page gave 500 response.
THE NEXT DAY: Woke up because Netflix was working at 8.26am again.
Great, I get up. Can't wait to do anything I want again! I can code, game, watch porn, possibilities are endless!
I get stuff to breakfast. Come back and guess what? NO INTERNET!
Got confirmation of existence of problems at noon. Something with streaming, possibly fixed by Monday.
Okay maybe streaming, but shouldn't the other stuff then work? I process.
Used up my mobile data. Tried again, now it works, but...
.. why.. so.. slow? It was worse than 3g. Time to get out lynx to Google.
It's Sunday. I woke up pissed, got myself a Coffee and tried to get some offline work done. I sipped, closed my eyes for a moment and opened chrome.
IT WORKED! omg, fuck yes! I almost cried I was that happy - can you believe it?
All fine an dandy Monday. So surely the streaming thing will also be gone now, cool.
Today's day is Tuesday. Guess why I am writing this.
Fuck these apprentice nigga cunts graaaaa!!! Or their infrastructure will finally break down.
How is it even possible to do any work on a very important node at a time where probably everyone wants to chill out with the web?7
there are 2 types of programmers:
the ones that circlejerk try to relate with programming nuances and annoyances through cringe awful memes.
and the ones that circlejerk complain about those cringe awful memes.
oh, there's also the chill people that dgaf at all3
Usually what helps me get into the zone is having ambient or chill music playing in the background. After a while it's just me and my code with nothing disturbing me.1
VLC for android is horrendous when it comes to network storage (and ux, but that's vlc in general). 3500 audio titles in a playlist being vlc-native format via samba-share. The fucking thing just freezes up. 3 minutes later it still doesn't do anything..
Oh you say it's prebuffering? How nice it's able to do so witHOUT READING ANYTHING FROM THE FUCKING DISK IN MY SERVER NICE DUDE IS IT GOING TO FETCH IT TELEPATHICALLY?!3
A hear people have mixed feelings about listening to music when programming. I listen to chill step, upbeat electronic or rap mostly. Do you like to listen to music when programming? If so, what kind of music?5
Fucking gnome and their stupid fucking alerts. Seemed like an okish desktop, but cosing in vim triggers a metric butt ton of alerts which interrupts my super chill beats. So, ok lets disable them. Oh look there's a toggle.. easy enough. NO because those motherfucking alerts, while now silent, still cut off my music for a couple hundred ms every time they're triggered. Fuck you gnome.7
1, someone breaks public/private key encryption
2, watch the world burn
3, people will understand that this rant is just a joke1
Recently .. (28. Jan) .. Bluetooth 5.1 spec was released containing among other things, the abillity to detect the angle of recieved or sent signal using phased array antenas. I am exited as ... as ... i dont know what but this is amazing for indoor location uses ... cant wait to get hands on dev kit.
Anybody else fidling with BL tech ?4
People in the Apple Store are either extremely chill or extremely pretentious. I've yet to find someone in-between.
Microsoft bought Github so what ? It's not like github is the most important tool out there. If they break it we'll just move on to something else no problem just chill people. Give them the benefit of doubt maybe they'll make it even better.2
Let me do a non-dev related statement; Bear's Den is a very underrated band indeed. Songs like "Above The Clouds of Pompeii" and "Berlin" are so fucking chill, and melodically and lyrically well crafted.3
A new way appeared in my life.
Everything related to cars, metal and motor engines.
I may or may not have to dissapoint some people with it, but I am not going to be a dev I guess.
It was all fun and chill. Do not worry. I am not going to leave this awesome place haha, just felt like mentioning it. :)9
Ansible be like:
[DEPRECATION WARNING]: The sudo command line option has been deprecated in favor of the "become" command line arguments. Yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda...
# grep -rnw . -e 'sudo'
Then why the fuck do you keep yelling at my face?10
iPad + Apple pencil ONLY for note taking during lectures
Yay or nay?
Got any other combos that arent ms surface with a pen? (Bad experience cause of ssd failures)
Or what about those Wacom tablets? Are they even good in terms of pen to screen response latency?
Educate me if you saw me as an ignorant piece of f but are there any tablet with stylus pen support that are almost input-lag free like the apple pencil with iPad? I once tried it in the store and boi did it truly impress me, also I haven't seen anything else close to it, I tried the Samsung ones, they didn't look to me as fast as the apple pencils
Do you have like out-of-the-box ideas that are not pen and paper? Do write them down8
Tldr: intern here, I like staying in my workplace for longer than my work hours. Is it going to cause me trouble if i become a permanent employee?
Long story: So as per my previous rants i joined a startup as an android intern, company is of around 80-90 employees with many teams and standard/sad rules like 9 hr shift, 1 paid leave per month etc.
I was worried of these rules due to being a regular clg student and living very far from office, so i complained and got a little compensations like 7 hr work shift, few half days and work from home days, etc
Now the thing is : i actually have kind of started to like this work. Its been a month and i took around 12 days leave last month for papers, but marked some of them as wfh and half days, so deductions were not what i expected (although payslip is yet to come, which would have given a better explaination). But overall Pay is decent, work environment is chill ( people work in teams here, but since am the only android dev, i got no timelines, or tech leads. Just the ceo, whom i send a daily progress message), there are good refreshments available and after papers, i am pretty much free.
So I like staying here for longer hours like 8, or 8.30 hours. My family is also working, so they are usually not much worried, tho my mom starts sending messages when i leave after 7. But this friend of mine, keeps saying "its wrong, your managers are gonna call you weak and would force you to work for more hours when they notice you can come for 9 hours , etc"
So am i doing the wrong thing here?4
AppStore says "We're working hard on getting all the 🐛s squashed so please bear with us."
I says "WHAT 🐛s?!" devRant is the 💣1
So I've learned how to code a little over 2 years ago. I have been at my current job as a full stack developer for just less than 2 years. For my job I work with multiple fortune 500 companies and it is unbelievable the incompetence that almost all the devs that I work with have. I have only been doing this for 2 years and some of the devs I work with will spend months on a ticket that I can do in a few hours. At times I think they just have it figured and do very little work and just chill most of the time and get paid 6 figures to do it.
I just don't understand how these guys have all this experience and they are still bad engineers. They just don't know how to engineer properly. It's so frustrating.
Maybe it's just the people I work with but I have seen on the inside of a lot large corporations and it's terrifying.
Here's to one day opening the doors of my own company and not allowing incompetence to come through the door2
PM asked me to create wireframes for new project.
Aahhh! I can chill, relax, even sleep on my desk now.
This was a project for school, we had to simulate an app that traced bus routes over a map.
All the teams but mine do it in Java (desktop app), we took another approach and did it on Android with the Maps API.
I had fun coding a parser, this parser job was to read a file and load the bus routes and draw them on the map.
It was structured like:
The fun part was coding and telling my teammates "chill out, it will work", so we finished, built and run and... done! First code working smooth AF.
I know it's a simple parser and a simple app, but it was a nice feeling not having to debug the app.1
When you finished work, go home, chill for an hour, make some food, sit down to eat and then it hits you hard: "Fuck when I deployed I forgot to implement the (var something;) feature!!! NOOOO" and then it haunts you the whole time haha
The feeling of incompetence when you realize all your life you've copied and extended tutorial code from the internet. So much so, that the thought of coding from line 0 sends a chill down your spine.
*phew* 14 hours straight at the office. I was getting giddy towards the end. So much fun to bingework once in a while. ToDo lists are looking pretty empty right now :) ...maybe just chill tomorrow and go talk to people.
I work in office block, he works in company next to me, was wondering where he been for the last couple hours. Started thinking he weren't in today hahaha.
Can't lie, might jump into the booth next to him 😂😂😂😂
Hey devs, out of curiosity i wanted to Ask you.. what do you do to unwind ? Any Rituals, activities etc. that help you from not going insane in stressed periods ?22
I get a chill or an eerie feeling when there are more programs open than needed and I go ahead and kill them.
Is it just me or happens to others too?2
Working on 3 projects solo remotely and everyone wants their changes promptly. Also, I don't disclose to clients that I work for other people. (Being me)
Finished with 2 projects today so gonna Netflix and chill ( I really don't have a gf and idgaf), I need pack of smokes really bad and internet outage just in time when I finally finished, now waiting for more changes eagerly so that I can get paid finally2
Got home after a four hour physics test, laid down in my bed and thought to myself, I'll just chill here for a bit. Haha nope! I woke up a little over 3 hours later. No coding done today... :(2
Gotta love when you come across an interesting piece of software with a modern, sleek, and snazzy homepage. Then you press "Sign up" and are redirected to an ancient 90's web app whose first element after the body is a table.
Two weeks ago we delivered four parts from a request containing about 30 minor developments to ease general every day operations.. this week my boss demanded a specified fallout report about how those cut our expenses and costs, how many percentage those four of the total amount of savings all 30 developments would save and whatnot.
ARE YOU FUCKING SHITTING ME!? They've been in prod for ONE god damn week and the intended operations are not even launched yet! How about you go and CHILL THE FUCK DOWN!? I understand that whole part about growing business and getting it to stay alive, but you sir.. you.. GAAAH!!
Was doing some chill programing when all of a sudden we lose power in the entire fucking house! So not just a blown fuse or something, but looks like the entire street has it, so no telling when it'll be back on either -_- Also I reaaaallly need to buy a UPS for my server, this is happening way too fucking often.5
Having to come into the office on the day after new years hungover and grouchy to do support tickets because everyone else took leave and you're a good boy that gets shit done1
How do you guys separate your working environments for different projects?
My situation is that I have one gaming project which requires having Windows OS (for testing purposes since can't run that game on Linux or Mac OS)
Then I have 2-3 other projects (freelancing/fulltime gigs) which don't require Windows so I use macbook for them.
Then I have other projects for my freetime (self development and stuff) and also need an environment just to be able not to work and chill instead
I tried separating these concerns with using tools such as evernote, trello and etc. but it's really getting out of hand.
Using different users for Win/Mac is not an option since I dont want to be switching between different users all the time.
Should I consider using some VM's to have my working environments for different projects separate? Will I use performance when using these VM's?
Buying 5 laptops just to separate everything doesnt make sense as well.6
Recently i switched from using git with gui tools to just console, and love the speed and reliability increase, but guys do you really resolve merge conflicts in console? Is it effective/worth getting used to?4
What is your source for dev related news? Sorted by its reliability thruthfullnes would be best.
I regullary watch https://news.ycombinator.com but more often i see articless writen for drama and clicks.1
He you all, I'm in London between 27th and the 30th of July. Wanna meet up, grap some coffee, just chill and talk some code?
Hit me up below!!2
Odd question to a dev community who are naturally socially awkward that talks to their ducks.
Even then, for those of us who do have a social life, we just chill when we need to. Anyone who "tries" to balance their life would find it very stressful. Just go with it. Do what you need to do at that scheduled time and when time is up, do the other thing that you promised yourself.
Others: "Easier said than done! You don't have to push releases and squash bugs in critical moments!"
Then that's a trigger to the question, "Do you even live, bro? There's more to life than just dev all day err'day."
Don't think too much.
Replace every other profession eventually, actually screw that remove computing profession too and just chill and let things burn3
Software development process
0:I can't fix this
1:Crisis of confidence
4:Oh fuck it was a typo ,chill :3
That moment when you are actually looking forward to just go home and chill
And then your pc welcomes you with that.6
Having not touched my cordova/phonegap project for so long, so many updates... removing and adding of plugins... Ohhh the pain! Errors, errors everywhere!1
So let me get this straight.
- You propose a tutorial about how to create an e-commerce website using Laravel, with a shitty powerpoint-like display
- We have to click "next" to learn the basics of PHP, MVC, Laravel, Mix and such, while all I need to know is about the payment system and global logic
- On the last PowerPoint, you suddenly decide that you should finally think about displaying some actual code while all before was theoric class
- So the last powerpoint page is 45 times longer than any other previous pages.
- Of course, there was nothing about what I was looking for.
You should consider stop wasting everyone's time as a 2018 new resolution.1
Ok, you've got some free time and a folder full of bookmarks to get through the subjects you need for that cert....
....but it has been busy these past few months. One day out of your holiday just to chill and do nothing, then you can get to work....
....you have 9 days. 2 out of the 9 is ok just to relax, it is a holiday after all....
....ok, your going back to work in 2 days and the most you've done is read some semi-related articles that were shared on Twitter. Sort it out....
....24 hours to go, you've essentially done nothing productive. I guess I'll go back to fitting it in at work or convincing myself I'll do it when I get home after a long day.
Anyone else struggle with this? Not just for certs in particular, but just learning in general.
So I was on github today and this teenager came up to me and asked what I was doing but I was too chill to answer at that time.
My screen read "Forking in progress" and now he's been saying it over and over again and thinks it's funny.
That’s my first hackathon, We where working for 1 full day from 4PM to 6PM next day without having any sleep to give a killer product on integration of multiple applications into one single point (Hard Work)
One team just came chill in the Hackathon went out sleep and made a killer presentation on how to integrate Slack with multiple applications like Jenkins, GutHub and much more to make life simple (Smart Work)
Actually we both lose but their way was implemented in organisation 😝1
When your weekend starts with: ahh just gonna chill and test my apps background-fetch mode and realizing it dont work with async requests and silent push-notifications, spending the weekend adding syncronious requests for silent push. Why does apple hate developers??
Would wearing a Google tee on the first day of my internship(elsewhere) put forward the wrong impression? Like it's a startup and the culture (supposedly) is really chill but I'm not too sure.1
Lovers of music, you should check out Soulection (SoundCloud & Beats 1 Radio) for music you can code to & also chill out to1
ANYONE IN SF THIS WEEKEND?
Tech company flew me out here and I'm here till Sunday!
Looking to party or just chill and explore the city/eat good Mexican food.
Staying at a hip hostel in Mission District.

Putting on my headphones, listening to loud af chill step while completely disconnecting myself from the outside world and just getting my flow on.
This semester I'm taking a class in my university about Cloud computing. You know, how to use the cloud better, when to use it, and we are using AWS in the class. That mother fucking class takes a lot of my time, I couldn't sleep for 2 nights in a row doing homework, and now EVERY TIME I go to YouTube to chill and see a video I GET A UDEMY AD TO LEARN AWS. WHY??3
B awsome as usual and chill have fun wth coding not limited to working hours.
Make coding my prority one hobby... Then the rest 😉
Starting wt contributing to an open source project...
Spent downtime during testing passing papers with this dude in my class working on an app. Pretty chill guy imo.
Tl;dr any tips for new scrum team ? How to start with story points with people that dont know eachother?
Its for our team project at uni ( 8 people 1 year). Yesterday we had our first meeting and the hardest part was asigning story points. Or asigning some benchmark value for story point.
Looking for some practicall tips since uni gives us all the theory we need. ( Does not mean I know all the theory :D )6
This is random not a rant but An appreciation letter to all chill teachers thx for letting devs talk about developing applications.
thank you sincerely one random dev!
After meet emacs, I NEED keyboard shortcuts even for visual interfaces and chill apps. Even, for apps like Telegram, WhatsApp, Magnet (Windows Manager for OS X), Photoshop & Illustrator among others.1
In my college project I am stuck with dumbos. I thought because of of experience in industry I would make them learn something. They don't anything other data entry, a lot of which can be automated. And I work the code which involves building APIs and 2 different Android apps. They are 3 and I am one. Till today they never bother to install the dev environment. Today I told them to get their laptops so they could connect to my laptop server and work with it. But no one bothered to get their laptops. All of them were using my one laptop. Can you imagine 3 people sitting on one machine instead of 3. And I have to sit there doing nothing😑. I went out to chill for sometime knowing that I could do nothing useful without my laptop. And when I return I find that instead of adding new entries, these people kept on editing old entries.🤦🏻 I mean how dumb could anyone be. Power of 3 brains. I can handle 0 work done, but this is negative work. I could done it myself by writing some automation script. And these people tell people behind my back to my friends that they do all the work😡. I have reached the limits.2
All I need is my headset with some chill music plus the chatty secretary out of my working area (cause she doesn't understand the DO NOT DISTURB purpose of having my headset covering my two ears)...
A little rant about you guys...
Those devRanters that feel the need to put "repost" on every fucking post they come across, I have news for you... By putting "repost" you are intact fucking reposting.
People cannot read every single rant ever posted, and just because you read a similar post, doesn't mean they did. Chill out.4
My family was super chill about it. My dad just does his best to let me know I need to stop talking when I start talking "over his head".
In response to my previous rant:
You guys thought I'd have to redo my time estimate to my boss. I'm chill fam.
I just finished the code in about an hour of editing and testing.
Pic related, my face until the next time this thing breaks.
