Today my oldest son is 8 years old and with pizza and cake we discussed how to hack his friends tablet, star Wars vs star trek and how to hijack wifi networks when friends parents won't give password.
And he told me how to evade detection and bypass the schools filters that he figured out alone.
I feel so damn proud.11 -
My interviews to hire a Junior Dev will begin this week. Here's how its gonna go down.
Me: Star Trek or Star Wars?
My Supervisor: WTF? How is that relevant?
Human Resources: Let's see what he says.
Applicant: Battlestar Galactica
Me: Nice. I can deal with that.
Me: Tabs or spaces when indenting your code?
Supervisor: ... ?
Human Resources : ...
Applicant: Spaces.
Me: GTFO you imbecile! Next!27 -
While watching season 2 of Star Trek Discovery, it was nice to learn SQL is alive and well in the 23rd century. Also, that there are still idiots that don't defend against injection on a warp-capable spaceship with transporter technology.3

Okay, I love programming - making my code better faster more readable^^ but I am not a nerd, I have no idea what's going on in star wars or star trek, I do not fucking care about Game of Thrones - I prefer to go out in some clubs and so... I hate it when people are so fucking surprised about my job and interests.
There are programmers who are not nerds live with it!21 -
Windows vs Linux vs MacOS, Android vs iOS,
PHP vs .Net vs Java vs python vs whatever,
Angular vs React vs Elm vs vanilla ...
It's like Nintendo vs Sega,
Star Wars vs Star Trek,
Beatles vs Rolling Stones ...
It's all a bit childish, right?5 -
An aunt enthusiastically regifted me a Captain Phasma figurine. "It's your favorite Star Trek person, Luke Sky Water!"
Politely accepted.7 -
Craziest prep for an interview?
Way back when I interviewed devs, I prepped a bank of Simpsons and Star Trek trivia questions if the candidate answered one of the softball questions ("What are your hobbies?", etc ) that related to either subject. On rare occasion a candidate claimed to be a big trekkie so I asked..
<Deep Space Nine was in it's 5th season>
Me: "What was the name of Captain Sisko's ship?"
C: "Sisko? Was he from the original series?"
Me: "No, Deep Space Nine"
<awkward silence>
C: "Is that the new series?"
Me: "Not really, but lets do an original series question. What does the middle initial 'T' stand for in James T Kirk?"
<awkward silence>
C: "I have no idea. I don't think it stands for anything."
He didn't make the cut.
My boss at the time said I should not document any of those questions/answers just in case we are sued for discrimination.36 -
“Begin your onboarding and assimilation program.” Are new employees joining a company or the Borg? I guess it’s ok so long as the next line doesn’t say “Resistance is futile.”

i am happy to announce that Proton for Steam/Valve works for Star Trek Online. That is all. #linux #gaming4

When the Python tutorial gets to this point and you try it out while inspired by your previous Star-Trek-themed rant (https://www.devrant.io/rants/439358)2

Got my Stress Ball in the mail the other day. It now joins the other items living on my desk at work. :-)3

That nerdy moment when you explain HTML/CSS to a friend willing to learn how things work and you're using Star Trek factions as an example. Gutters become neutral zones, classes become colors by discipline, and Romulans are designated by their identification as a species after the Hobus star system goes supernova.

My problem with “The DevOps Handbook” is the same problem I have with Star Trek: The Next Generation: it gave me seriously unrealistic expectations that senior leaders can be convinced to abandon stupid ideas.
Or maybe it’s just that in my mid-to-late thirties my tolerance for manglement is as low as it’s ever been, and I’ve grown out of that idealistic kiss-ass stage of my career.

Anyone else watching the HD remaster of Star Trek: TNG on Netflix and thinking, "that Holodeck should have had some unit tests!"
Also: what's with the passwords being short spoken phrases that can be recorded and played back? Have they not heard of 2FA in Starfleet?
1/10 totally unwatchable (just kidding, I'm loving it)3 -
I'm playing with a Z80 SBC, and I was trying to run the old Star Trek game on it. I had a C source file, and used a makefile to try to compile it. It failed due to various library issues, but I just checked the folder (I had done this earlier today) and there's an EXE of the Star Trek game sitting there. I don't know how I compiled it for Windows. I didn't use any CC or GCC commands. I'm just confused.

my first project was a star trek themed text based rpg adventure. it was a hell of spaghetti of if queries and gotos in gw basic. later these kind of things got something like an ui.
my first experience was my father doing mandelbrot sets from a magazine and i was watching building them up green pixel for greenpixel on an 8086 pc. it was raining outside and i was sitting in an arm chair with a warm blanket. this cozy feeling remains until today and might explain my personal attachment for this topic.
fortunately his failed attempt to introduce me into programming doing a morsecode translator did not stop me for long. -
Anyone playing Star Trek Online via Wine, PlayOnMac, CrossOver, or WineBottler? They yanked the official Mac installer in February and I refuse to allocate space for bootcamp or my Macbook Pro or a dual boot on my hackintosh. I got it working momentarily on crossover but something went wrong.
Damn you Cryptic Studios! -
Someone needs to make a clip of Obiwan getting cut down by Darth Vader. Then following after Obiwan is re-materialized on a transporter deck in Star Trek.

ChatGPT is a manifestation of how characters from Star Trek TNG++ used to pair with the ship's computer.
Sure, sometimes the computer became sentient and tried to kill everyone. But they dealt with it, ya know?
