About a year ago, I did an e-commerce for a client who wanted to sell electronic goods. It was a custom design, so the team prepared a mock-up and we showed it to the client who absolutely loved it. The specs were that he was going to sell only a few products (like 50 or so) so the website had to showcase the categories and didn't need to put a lot of products on page. Also the design had to be unique as he wanted to be different from his competitors.
A few weeks later, during the dev phase the client checks again the design and starts doubting about it. We redesign it adjusting to his oppinion. A week later he schedules a meeting where he starts complaining that the deadline is late and that the design doesn't accomplish his specs. At that meeting he tells us that he wants to sell thousands of articles since he's doing dropshipping.
We start from scratch and make a third design, which he approves after quite a lot of changes. He also asks for a dropshipping plugin which we install in its free version, when he complains about having to update manually, we answer politely that he has to purchase the paid version.
Fast forward, we deploy the website and the design has a few issues related to responsive development. We fix it quickly and the site starts working.
He also has a physical shop, however, since he's competing with big corporates like Amazon or eBay and he can't offer any difference, neither his phisical address or his on-line shop manages to be profitable.
He decides to close the business but before, he calls my PM saying that the website has "never worked" (There were a couple of people who bought with 0 issues and we tested the site countless times). And that we shouldn't have recommended a custom design because the website never worked. He also implied that we should compensate him because of that.
I've never seen my PM to tell someone to "fuck off" as fast as he did.6 -
Hello again, everyone. I've been busy with all the paperwork at my ship (will make a post about it later) but for now, I'll bore you with another story (not navy one, fortunately) to justify my slacking off.
And this story... is the story on how I got into ITSec. And it is pretty damn embarrassing. It all began when I was 16. I was hooked on battleknight.gameforge.com, a browser game. My father had just had ADSL installed at our home, and the new opportunities before me were endless. Well...
After I've had my fill with the porn torrents and them opportunities dwindled to just a few dozens, I began searching for free games, and I stumbled on that game. I played a lot, but as a free-to-play game, it was also pay-to-win. I didn't have a credit card, so I paid for a few gems with SMS messages. Fast forward a couple of years, I got into the Naval Academy. A guy came in to advertise something (I think it was an encyclopaedia or something - yes, wikipedia wasn't a thing back then) and to pay for it, we could apply for a credit card. So I applied. And I resisted the temptation for a year.
Note: prepaid wasn't that known where I live, so using credit cards was the only way for online transactions.
So I made 1 transaction. Just one. After a couple of months my monthly report from the bank came, showing a 2.5$ (I think) transaction on Paypal. I paid no mind, thinking that it was some hidden fee. Oh boy, I shit you not, I was THAT much of an idiot. Six months later, BOOM!
600$ transaction to ebay via paypal. You can imagine all those nice things that came to my mind. In any case, the bank accepted my protest that I filed at their central offices and cancelled the transaction. I promptly cancelled my card, destroyed it right there for good measure, and got to thinking... what the fuck just happened?
As many people here, I am afflicted with a deadly virus, called curiosity. I started researching the matter, trying to figure out how. And, because I didn't like black boxes and "it is just like it is" explanations, I tumbled down the rabbit hole of ITSec. I soon found out that, not only it was possible, but also it was sometimes EXTREMELY easy to steal credit card info. There are sites, to this very day, that store user info (along with credit cards info) IN FUCKING CLEARTEXT. Sometimes your personal, financial and even medical info are just an SQLi away.
So, I got very disillusioned on many things. But I never regretted it. It may cause me to age prematurely and will kill me of stroke or heart attack one day, but as I still tumble down the ITSec rabbit hole, I can say with confidence that
I REGRET NOTHING
Plus, my 600$ were returned, so look on the bright side :)1 -
So I listed my old gtx1080 on eBay for $500
I got an offer of $640 from a profile that is brand new. They want to pay (a lot) extra for me to ship to Malaysia. Their profile says they are in the US.
The fuck kinda scam is this?15 -
Was explaining a technical concept at a "family" dinner. Suddenly stepmother wanted my help for something technical.
Stepmother: Say Awlex, could you help me install some software I recently bought?
Me: (Not this shit again) I even don't know what software you're talking about. How is the software called, what does it do?
Sm: it's calles digital... *long pause*
Me: (I don't like where this is going)
Sm: software... *another long pause*
Me: (fuck me harder than that lightly clothed woman outside)
Sm: something... *long pause*
Me: (alright brain, which way out of here doesn't involves me creating a bullet hole in either one of us?)
Sm: And you can use it to sell something...
Me: (tf do you event sell?!)
Sm: but not like ebay
Me: (what is it then? A platform for selling services? I don't even know what kind of software you'd have to install, given that most of these platforms are be web applications, whcih makes sense for selling stuff on the internet)
Sm: Anyway, could you help me install it? It would take me hours to get into it.
Me: (You think just installing would solve it? As soon as I install it, you probably expect me to be your walking manual as well, don't you?) Look, I'm gonna be honest with you, since I started working I don't have nearly as much free time as I used to have (Not everybody works when they feel like it, you know that?) I get home at around almost 7pm (most of the time) and don't really wanna work afterwards. Most of the time there's a support service from the people who made this software and they would be glad to help you. (Sorry support team, for pushing this bundle of incompetence onto you, but I guess she didn't even listen to my advice).
After that she didn't back down and still wanted my help. Then my grandmother derailed the conversation and got me out of this. When I thanked her later she yold me that she saw I saw uncomfortable and wanted to help. I love my grandmother.
So I am not going to be your "family" tech support. You b(r)ought this onto yourself. Are more than twice my age and still can't use your brain to solve problems like these on your own and you can even less reason abiut your motives and desires when asking for help. I am sick of you and shutty opinions about people, just because I work as a software engineer doesn't mean I'm exist solely for satisfying your unreasonable desires.
Stop offending me and my profession and get yourself some common sense.
Protip #0: Give me one fucking reason to help you, because you're not family enough and your personality really doesn't bring forth any emotion but annoyance4 -
Yeah these fucking assholes lost a 300 pound gaming chair at my local depot for 3 weeks where I eventually got a refund from Amazon. I ordered a USB desk fan for the heat off ebay, yeah these fucking cunts delivered it to my workplace at 9pm.
Guess who is building my companies new ecommerce platform, where I am currently integrating the shipping options. Fuck off Yodel.7 -
For fuck sake!
Fuck locatefamily.com, just searched out on google my name and surname, both foreign and hard to even spell out for many, and it's the first time that I saw my data(where did I live, my current work phone number, name and surname) open wide as the second link of my search, fuck!
But there's a clue, at that address I lived for a not so long period, so I did search my emails in that period and other than my employers and government emails(in which I don't trust either), here's a list of companies that had my info(partial or full):
Only address(with name and surname):
Amazon.it with 14 other companies(for shipping)
eBay with 4 other companies(for shipping)
voxelfarm.com
trenord.it
DUMA (LIGHT) di Adel
decathlon.com
gruppoargenta.it
paypal.it
All info:
gearbest.com
glistockisti.com
oculus.com
Banggood.com
Overall there are 33(including government, employers and national main mail service) potential leaks of that data, with 7 in full exposure.
After this, I'm thinking how it's even avoidable to not leak personal data, because from any of those businesses I got goods or services that otherwise I couldn't without exposing such informations... fuck.6 -
Completely fucked up replication of MySQL servers.
Remote: 2 different database Servers
--> made sense.
Except the misconfiguration. Or better: No configuration at all.
So how to solve the massiv delays and make everything even more crazy?
2 remote servers - 2 readonly slaves for reading data remote (master - slave)
2 local (internal) servers.
Remote - Local Master Master.
Unfucking this cluster fuck was a real nightmare.
It had to be done at night, cause everything needed to be ripped apart.
And the servers were the backend of a warehouse with supply chain and multiple selling channels (Amazon, eBay etcetera).
So. It had to run the next day at 05.00 clock so the incoming orders could be packaged / prepared for shipping.
That was fun. Not.
And the clusterfuck died spectaculously on my first work day - the old DBA was gone (fired....)
:) -
I finally got the refurbished laptop I ordered and..
wrong CPU, wrong number of cores
wrong GPU
only 1 USB port, I bought 3
battery is DOA
fuck aaa_pcs at ebay. they better replace this with what I bought or imma call Karen to talk to their manager
maybe I should check for spyware/backdoors/etc while I'm at it just because I'm pissed.
any suggestions? nothing is too petty if it doesn't void warranty6 -
Wow fuck today. I took the day off to watch the eclipse yesterday so coming in today was like Monday squared. Right off the bat I have somebody from last week that I had spend around 8 hours working to get their system right call in and tell me they were cancelling even though everything just got working right.
Also got tasked with documenting the servers which wouldn’t be rant worthy if the dev that set them up didn’t get cranky whenever I ask for credentials or even a rough overview of how the server stack is configured. Then I get a ticket about how a customer is going to get his data from his ‘web guy’ but this customer has been keeping his data in our system for the better part of a decade. Wtf you getting bro? And who is this web guy? What data does he have? Nobody seems to know. And just to smear shit on top it turns out I swapped the addresses on the car parts I sold on eBay and now I have to do 2 returns and cross ship and almost definitely get negative feed back. Fuck everything.
All this before lunch. After lunch I still have the same problems but at least I got chicken!1 -
LinkedIn: Exploiting social psychology for fun and profit.
I was reading an excellent post by Kage about linkedin (you can find it and more here - https://devrant.com/users/Kage) a little while ago and it occurred to me the unique historic moment we are in. Never before have we been so connected in history. Never before have we had so great an opportunity to communicate with strangers (perhaps except for sketchy candy vans on college campuses, and tie dye wearing guys distributing slips of paper at concerts). And yet today, we are more atomized than ever before. In this unprecedented era of free information, and free communication, how can we make the most of our opportunities?
The great thing about linkedin is all the fawning morons who self select for it. They're on it. They're active, so you know they're either desperate attention hungry cock goblins,
self aggrandizing dicknosed cretins, desperate yeasty little strumpets, or a managerie of other forgetable fucking pawns,
willingly posting up their entire lives to be harvested and sold so someone can make 15 cents on a 2% higher ad conversion ratio for fucking cilas or beetus meds.
So what is a psychopathic autist asshole to do?
Ruthlessly exploit them by feeding them upvotes, hows-it-going-guys, and other little jolts of virtualized feel-good-chemical bullshit.
Remember the quickest way to network is for people to like you. And the quickest way to make people like you is either agree with them on everything, or be absolutely upfront with everything you disagree on.
Well, they'll love you, or hate you. But at least you'll be living rent free in their head. And that means they'll remember you when you call looking to network or get a referal.
Of course, in principle, this extends to any social media site. Why not facebook? Why not fucking *myspace*? Why not write a script in selenium to browse twitter all day, liking pictures of lattes and dogs posted by the lonely and social-approval-hungry devs working at places like google, twitter, faceborg, etc?
You could even extend this to non-job prospects. Want a quick fuck? Why, just script a swipe-right hack on tinder, or attach a big motherfucking robot arm to your phone, tapping and swiping for hours. Want to make a buck? Want not harvest data on ebay or amazon all god damn day and then run arbitration for 'wanted' classifieds on craiglist?
Why not automate all the things?
The world is at your fingertips, and you the power to automate it, while all the wall lickers and finger painters live oblivious to the opportunity they are surrounded with and blessed with daily.
Surely now that you know, it is your obligation, nay, your DUTY to show the way.
Now you are learned. Now you are prepared. Go forth and stroke the egos of disposable morons to bilk for future social favors while automating the world in ways never intended.3 -
So I work at a company where we sell on eBay and Amazon...
Got an email from a colleague about a problem to do with end of day (marks orders as processed, dispatched online via API...
Was doing something in the office and since it was pretty silent, thought I'd ask about it, maybe get a little more info about the problem.. what was their response?
"Was my email not clear enough?"
Well fuck you, you miserable fuck. -
Story, !rant.
So after previously telling the story of my laptop in the rain, I thought I should follow up with this one. (this is couple months later)
My laptop was bought second hand by my father (who doesn't know anything about computers) and the poor thing had a tendency to overheat. It worked fine, but under heavy load it would only last a couple minutes before it shut down.
So once I was cleaning out the fan (as dust accumulated in there) and I ran it under the tap, to get everything off. Sure, you might cringe at the idea but I thought some water wouldn't hurt it, especially after surviving en evening in the rain. So I cleaned it and let it dry.
A while later, when it finished drying I started to reassemble my laptop. After about 30 mins of fiddling with it, it was back together and ready for a fresh start! So I powered it on.
Sparks flew. Smoke started coming off the motherboard. More sparks.
😯
I pulled the cord. "Fuck, glad I caught it on time..."
I waited a while longer. Turn it back on. "Fan is not functioning properly or is missing". FML. After all it had survived, a bit of water in the circuit that made the fan spin is what took it down 😑
Fast forward two years (without a fan, shitty days), and I bought a second hand Lenovo laptop that I adore. So I thought I'd sell the laptop on Ebay, but first I should fix the fan so that I wouldn't have to sell it for next to nothing. Part number was hard to find, and bought it from somewhere in Europe. Four weeks later, the fan arrived at my doorstep.
Took the laptop apart (have I mentioned how hard that was?) and replaced the fan. Felt good to fix what I had ruined two years back. Put it back together (after applying thermal paste, I'm not a monster) and powered it on.
"Fan is not functioning properly or is missing"
😑
After checking the connection a couple times, I realized that what had given out was the motherboard connector for the fan, after the water incident. Wasted 40 dollars and several hours of my time for nothing.
The laptop that survived hours in the rain was taken down by a wee bit of water. So sad.2 -
So tired of app developers localizing app information with Google Translate. Use a real person that can READ AND WRITE IN THE FUCKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE or scrap the entire translation and do marketing in English. And Google? Why the fuck do you allow people to embarrass themselves by providing machine translated SHIT in the Store Listing options?
Some gems found on Google Play Store, translated from Norwegian to English the way I as Norwegian interpret them.

Ebay is a huge pile of freshly juiced garbage.
Their settings menu looks like its from 2005. And when it looks halfway decent the CSS doesnt load cause you have do not track enabled.
If you go to write their support, it returns an unexpected error.
when you use the shopping cart the number of items you have in it is not the same as the number it says that you have in it. And when you want to checkout that cart, not all items show up on the payment screen. Despite the item being shippable.
And the worst thing of them all: IF YOU THEN CHECK OUT ALL THESE ITEMS IT MAKES AN INDIVIDUAL TRANSACTION FOR EACH ONE. THUS THE FRAUD DETECTION OF THE CARD BLOCKS THE CARD, CAUSE TOO MANY TRANSACTIONS HAPPEND AT ONCE!2 -
Found my grandmother's Vista laptop from '07. It has 3 problems:
1. Battery lasts 15 seconds at full charge (not a shock)
2. Plastic shell around screen is cracked (not badly, likely fixable with plastic welding)
3. IT'S SLOW AS FUCK
Point 3 is strange, considering the specs:
AMD dual-core CPU at 1600MHz (better than MY laptop...)
Some NVidia onboard GPU thing (no clue)
2x 512MB DDR2-L (immediately swapped out with 1x2GB and 1x1GB, the most we have at the house)
What I noticed, though, is that it's got a SOCKETED CPU (a rarity only like 3 years later), specifically an S1 socket. There's an AMD Phenom quad-core clocked at 1800MHz with that socket, for $16 on eBay no less!
However, it's a different processor family, so I don't know if it'd work in the board...
Anyone think it'd work?9 -
Asdfghjkl keys does not work! Not git push, no save! Oh fuck my screen was locked so no on-screen keyboard! Mother fuck! Is this a quick solve for MBP? New keyboard cost £14.99 on eBay.2
-
I got 2 PS3 Move sticks (the kind with the ball, usable for VR) for $5 from a local pawn that always low-prices tech (I also got one of the thumbstick ones without the ball, and a Wiimote as well, both bundled with) and decided to try and set up PSMoveService on my PC. Half my mobo and the USB Bluetooth stick I've had for like 5 years just failed the smoke test. The USB controller on my mobo released the mysterious blue death smoke (the only other interface I have is ONE PS/2 port) and the Bluetooth stick caught on ACTUAL FUCKING FIRE. The PS Move controllers have been shorted out in the chaos, and my keyboard's also been shorted out.
Fuck.
My.
Life.
I need a new mobo ($100-$400), 2 new PSMove sticks ($100+ on eBay) and a new Bluetooth stick (the one I had was actually really cool, but I can get a new good one for $50, just not THAT one)
That's a $250 bill at the *very* least.
