Stumbled upon VS Code recently, an open source freeware from Microsoft. And as a VIM fan, I must say that it blew me away with its sleek nature.

When i worked in IT there was a client who bringed his desktop saying that it gets really hot and made some noices. When we opened the case we found a giant dead rat inside, its tail was tangled in a fan. It smelled horrible.6

I love materializecss.com .. I love the concept and I don't know why, but I like it ways better than bootstrap. Materialize looks kinda fresh to me - not the classic Material Design. Aaaaaand it's very easy to work with it.5

Well done firefox for not implementing some stuff from ES6, because you decided to do so. Isn't the releases of EcmaScript considered to be standards? I'm a Firefox fan, but damn, Chrome is so much more advanced.7

- BIOS warning disabled because the lowest regular fan level is 0 RPM
Luckily, I still had some cheap 120mm fan which is a bit louder, but works. What's astonishing is that in normal operation, i.e. without full load, the case fans alone provided enough air stream for the CPU cooler.8 -

Company I work for issues Macs to everyone, and it's a software company. I'm not a MacOS fan. Tried for 3 months, still irritates me. Now I have Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro, and the world is right again. You can't imagine the flack I get!!!!12

My godmother asked me to repair her PC... so when opening the case i realized that her "shady"(improvised wires) case fan was not working... so i tried to connect its molex wire to the psu, and realized i neded an wire adaptor because the psu could not support that fan(only had one molex, female, not male and female), but I gave it a try... long story short... I SHORT-CIRCUITED THE PC...(but it restarted after 10 minutes of me dying of fear that i destroyed her pc...)6

Any idea how to make a fan in an HP laptop spin at lower temperatures? The fan in my Pavilion dm-1 only starts spinning when CPU reaches 75°C and enters full speed when the GPU also becomes 75°C. Which is strange because this CPU and GPU are one and the same thing.. an APU. And overheating freezes often happen at around 75-80°C.. which isn't too much of a headroom really. I'd rather have it kick in at 50-60°C already, but would like to avoid using the power of the soldering iron for it.. I've already lost a fan to that previously (current one is a spare part from AliExpress). Granted, my soldering experience was much less back then.. nowadays I can probably even solder 1206 SMD packages comfortably. But I don't want to risk it, and I've got experience with custom kernels anyway.. are there any fan speed governors in the kernel that you know of?
FWIW, fancontrol doesn't seem to be supported on this laptop, and neither is pwmconfig. Perhaps I'll have to stick to the electronics method after all? Given that it's just a 5V fan, I guess that I could feed it power by tapping some power from a USB rail and controlling its speed from an ATtiny85.. but inside the laptop there isn't enough space for that and I don't feel like freeing this hardware out of its laptop chassis yet (though that is on the list). Either way running at 60°C under no load is terrible.. some HP certified enganeering "feature" I guess...4 -

I'm a big fan of 'as' keyword in Python. It makes importing packages in the beginning of the code so slick.
Instead of doing:

You can neatly do:

My GPU blocks the airflow from the lower front intake fan to the CPU, so I wanted to have a fan in the 5.25" drive bay directly targeting the CPU.
While that bay fits a 140mm fan nicely, there was no mounting point. I ended up making four fan struts out of the metal covers for the 5.25" inserts, the ones that you wiggle out. Drilled holes into the case, a bit of foam above and below the fan to seal the larger gaps, and done.
The trick is ofc that the 5.25" case covers are meshed and hence act both as air intake and dust filter. The CPU runs a few K cooler under load.

Guess what my old Windows 8.1 laptop and a Nintendo 64 have in common?
Neither have a goddamn fan or a CMOS battery!!! I shit you not, I opened up my old windows 8.1 computer from like 2012 and it did not have a fan. Instead it had a large piece of metal connected to a CPU as a heatsink. It also never had a CMOS battery since the solder pads have never been used.

Monday morning we found out our main event queue hadn't processed since late Wednesday afternoon. Shit was hitting the fan and we were stumped. What had changed?!?. Why wasn't the queue processor running?!?
Turns out a server restart had killed the job (no worries there, surely?!) but turns out the job checked for a system flag on disk to stop it running multiple instance or in this case as the flag was still present any instance at all. Got to love the little things that really screw you over.6 -

Frankly I am considering it as a long-term solution. I currently have a proper rpi fan applied but it's just too freaking noisy! I thought my work lappy is noisy when at 90C. But this tiny rpi fan is just.. Painfully loud! Especially when rpi is suppised to be tiny and invisible.

It got so hot in the house today my grandmother's ceiling fan melted inside. It gets up to 350°F when it's spinning now and fucking SCREAMS.

So, in opengl 4.x, there are no primitives for circle, and the only ways to draw an almost perfect circle are following
Draw a triangle fan and fk up your memory for a circle
Draw a rectangle and use the fragment shader and distance equation to discard the bit that is not used
But you will need to add an if statement and potentially increase the frame time (from what i have heard)
And it will be more complicated than just using a triangle fan14 -

I'm not a fan of X display managers. I prefer to have my machine boot directly to the virtual console, and if I want to run X, I can start it with startx. Does anyone else do that? If so, what do you put in your .xinitrc?4

Just got a new laptop table with a cooling fan. Now watching an Isaac Arthur video before drifting off to sleep, with cozy pillows, a nice blanket, and the laptop on the aforementioned table above my legs.

Story, !rant.
So after previously telling the story of my laptop in the rain, I thought I should follow up with this one. (this is couple months later)
My laptop was bought second hand by my father (who doesn't know anything about computers) and the poor thing had a tendency to overheat. It worked fine, but under heavy load it would only last a couple minutes before it shut down.
So once I was cleaning out the fan (as dust accumulated in there) and I ran it under the tap, to get everything off. Sure, you might cringe at the idea but I thought some water wouldn't hurt it, especially after surviving en evening in the rain. So I cleaned it and let it dry.
A while later, when it finished drying I started to reassemble my laptop. After about 30 mins of fiddling with it, it was back together and ready for a fresh start! So I powered it on.
Sparks flew. Smoke started coming off the motherboard. More sparks.

I pulled the cord. "Fuck, glad I caught it on time..."
I waited a while longer. Turn it back on. "Fan is not functioning properly or is missing". FML. After all it had survived, a bit of water in the circuit that made the fan spin is what took it down 😑
Fast forward two years (without a fan, shitty days), and I bought a second hand Lenovo laptop that I adore. So I thought I'd sell the laptop on Ebay, but first I should fix the fan so that I wouldn't have to sell it for next to nothing. Part number was hard to find, and bought it from somewhere in Europe. Four weeks later, the fan arrived at my doorstep.
Took the laptop apart (have I mentioned how hard that was?) and replaced the fan. Felt good to fix what I had ruined two years back. Put it back together (after applying thermal paste, I'm not a monster) and powered it on.

After checking the connection a couple times, I realized that what had given out was the motherboard connector for the fan, after the water incident. Wasted 40 dollars and several hours of my time for nothing.
The laptop that survived hours in the rain was taken down by a wee bit of water. So sad.2 -
I have already been a big fan of Elixir for some time now, but seeing this during my inquiry into Elixir's official catalog of documentation has defanitely galvanized my already colorful opinion of this grate language.

I am not a fan of programs that want to store their libraries in your home directory. It's alright if they store it in a hidden folder at least. I like my home directory to be nice and clean~~3

It's almost like everytime I open the BitBucket pipeline logs my pc starts running the pipeline instead of BitBucket
Even visiting the logs spins up my fan so quickly that it's noticable for the people around me.

Let's talk fans. I've skimmed through beQuiet and noctua, but couldn't find the type I need. Are there quiet laptop fans out there?
Here's my case. I have an LED projector. As projectors are, it's somewhat loud. Not painfully annoying, but still. I wonder how could I make it quieter.
I had it disassembled to see what fan it has. It looks like an oversized laptop fan. Like 12cm or so.. I was thinking I could buy a silent fan, tear it apart, take its axis with blades and pop it in the original projector fan case. Problem is, I can't find any quiet laptop fans, be it normal size or oversized. Aren't there any? If so - why? Are there other means to quiet a fan like this down? I mean apart from cleaning and oiling - that's already done.

There is a table right under the fan on which I put a hot cup of coffee add suger to it. Now comes the good part.
I tie myself upside down with sealing fan right above table. Holding a spoon in one hand. Start the fan with a stick. Throw the stick. Just after speed is steady put the spoon in cup and let it stear.
Drink this coffe upside down.
It will increase productivity by 10000million%.

Need some help choosing a laptop (budget is up to 2000 EUR)
Initially 6 months ago I bought Dell G5 (5587) for 1300 EUR and it had i7 8750H CPU, 6GB NVDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD+1TB HDD.
However turned out to be a piece of shit because dell fucked up their thermal management badly and they don't give proper access for their users to control the fans. Even when you force fan control via Windows test build then you will face a dissapointment since most games won't run properly on Windows test mode. So anyways I got rid of that laptop. So yeah currently looking for a decent gaming/movies/coding laptop which gives full access to undervolting/fan control.

Wow I just thought I had lost my good old friend forever - my laptop did not want to turn non anymore and since the main fan is somewhat broken, I thought I'd never see him alive anymore and that he died from overheating thus I opened it, plugged it to the power connector and voila, it works again - whew, that was a shocking moment for me and I guess it's finally time to replace that fan.7
