I have an overly attached PC?14 -
My room fan broke today....
And it has been hot for a while now in The Netherlands, so every store I went to sold out.

You all, something is wrong. No one has pissed me off at work recently (other than boss, but he does that by existing). I'm not sure if they've all learned, or if shit is about to hit the fan.10

So I'm very much not a fan of apple and their products.
I bought an iPod Classic (160gb) today (second hand)
I was literally standing there wanting it while my ethics tried to withhold me from buying it 😅7 -
Me as interviewer: So how often do you post on dev rant and how far are you into game of thrones?
Interviewee: Not a fan and what's dev-
Me as interviewer: Ok I think I have all the info I need5 -
I can not function today in my hot office (no AC). I'm just reading rants in JSON format to look like I'm working. I may need a USB Desk Fan to improve my productivity. Anybody have recommendations?8

What do you call 8 hobbits?
A hobbyte!
You've probably already heard this one but if not and your a LoTR fan, your welcome.
Note: 40% of the time this works all the time as a pickup line.6 -
So I found an old laptop in the garbage, it had a better fan so I dremeled out my old fan and glued in the salvaged fan. It fits like a glove. All wired in and ready to go.1

Never thought an Icon Font library would make a million bucks in Kickstarter. Check out Font Awesome's campaign if you're a fan. They've got some sweet backer rewards.9

I'm a huge fan of the imagecreatefromstring function in PHP. I love how it can just take any image format as a string and turn it into an image!

Don't know how those 5 mins of devrant surfing before bed became 2 hours of joy ride ...never have been a fan of social media, but this seems my kinda thing9

Android: Oh, that's actually quite easy! All you need is permissi..

There is power cut in my college area sometimes...
Once we were in computer lab, when power cut occurred. So fan, tubelights went off.
I heard one girl ask her friend "how are laptops on?"

Well since I'm such a fan of Signal and have been using the version which is downloadable through their site, I'm going to attempt to compile it from source myself, then I'll truly have an open source version!29

I have a noisy client laptop fan.
It is like a DJ... 📼
Some time it sounds
Taaaaarrrraaaaa...
Some times
Tararararara....
Other times
Tara...tara..tara....
I am getting addicted to it
I am keeping headphones at home now as noise cancellation is not that good and have to listen to laptop fan music.
I have to ask for replacement.
But I guess I will miss my DJ then 😭3 -
Many people say, that devRant made it to their home screens.
On my phone, devRant made it to the quick actions.7 -
When Linux is life, and you are open source fan, but you have to use windows system at work......25

Fucking pigs at my office keep the AC at 26 C with the fan at minimum making it so hard to breathe in this Auschwitz simulator. 😡
Seriously the outside temp will be like 30-35 C and they still don't want the AC :/8 -

When a co-worker requested changes on a PR giving the reason "I am a fan of'".
No because it will optimize the application, or make the code more maintainable. He's just a fan. Like I went to work to look for fans.2 -
Stumbled upon VS Code recently, an open source freeware from Microsoft. And as a VIM fan, I must say that it blew me away with its sleek nature.
Been a user of Sublime and Atom in the past as well, but VS code surely stands out.9 -
My place of work just put on the World Cup live stream. I'm not even a huge fan but it looks nicer than my current code, so I'll live in denial for a bit2

Never update the firmware of your delta-fan driven server when your girlfriend is sleeping. Got thrown out of my own room!

Had a dream that I was attacked by Apple fan boys while eating lunch because I had a dell laptop 😨1

I'm not a huge fan of the idea of this place becoming a Q&A for code...
I mean that's what Stackoverflow is for.
I came here for good Rants and occasional memes.2 -
When you advise coworkers to do something one way because you know better but they do it their way anyway so this is you when shit hits the fan.

I made a fan page for my favourite League of Legends Champion: Camille. Also, a kind of newsletter because I have no life.22

I've got a brand new laptop and when the fan is spinning slowly, there is a noise like something is touching it.
I've recorded the noise, sent to the service and these people suggested a bios update. For a shitty fan noise...4 -
Honestly I don't mind ads, and I'm a fan of final fantasy but seriously this ad here pops up and fine with it but when the x button moves around the screen (Everytime it loads it's in different corners) AND it doesn't work I'm pissed!
-
We do infra as a code, and one of my coworker worked on the project alone. Few months down the road, when shit hits the fan, he just message me this is not working.
First of all, I did not write that shit, and also I was never part of the conversation during the decision making. So when shit hits the fan what do you expect me to do? Do some black magic and fix it magically???1 -
Nifty little fan, first time it's been hot enough to warrant opening it and I'm pleasantly surprised.6
-
My room fan broke last week, and they were sold out everywhere.
So i build one myself (last rant), but after a while it just blew hot air.
So after some work I have this :) Now it even has RGB :')

It baffles me how underrated Electron is.
I'm not a fan of learning millions of different Framework, but I think that Electron is groundbreaking.
To give some context, both Slack and Discord are made using Electron26 -
Power supply explosive party.
First time I saw two capacitors explode, hit the fan, melt the fan, get stuck there from the generated heat and blow every thing5 -
Look I'm a huge fan of Google (fight me about it, idgaf) but like G+ was such a fucking disaster and the fact it took this long is nothing short of a miracle lol9

When i worked in IT there was a client who bringed his desktop saying that it gets really hot and made some noices. When we opened the case we found a giant dead rat inside, its tail was tangled in a fan. It smelled horrible.6

Favourite programmer : Ada Lovelace ✌🏼
First lady programmer in the 1840s to write a machine algorithm.

I love materializecss.com .. I love the concept and I don't know why, but I like it ways better than bootstrap. Materialize looks kinda fresh to me - not the classic Material Design. Aaaaaand it's very easy to work with it.5

Well done firefox for not implementing some stuff from ES6, because you decided to do so. Isn't the releases of EcmaScript considered to be standards? I'm a Firefox fan, but damn, Chrome is so much more advanced.7
-
- booting Linux
- starting Clonezilla
- kernel panic after some time
- WTF, this used to work
- look at sensor values
- CPU is really hot
- CPU fan doesn't work
- BIOS warning disabled because the lowest regular fan level is 0 RPM
Luckily, I still had some cheap 120mm fan which is a bit louder, but works. What's astonishing is that in normal operation, i.e. without full load, the case fans alone provided enough air stream for the CPU cooler.8 -
>Gets a new CPU for desktop (yay, went from R5 1600 to R5 3600X)
>Spends half a day flashing new MB BIOS (Needed to flash individual major versions in order, couldn't just go 1.10 to 6.40)
>Finally finishes preparations and goes to replace the CPU
>Cleans the old one and packages it to give it to a friend
>Has issues inserting the new one as the orientation arrow on the motherboard was very hard to make out
>Spends 30 minutes applying thermal paste, worrying about optimal spread
>Forgets which side the CPU fan goes on
>Finally boots back up... CPU fan is suddenly loud AF under load, but eh, temps under stress are sub-60, so, good
~~Next day~~
>Loud CPU fan is too annoying, opens the case again
>CPU fan is on backwards
Ugh
>Takes the fan off, turns it around and fastens again, puts PC back together and boots
>Is quiet again, nice
>Goes to work on the PC
>2 hours later randomly checks temps because no fan noise is weird
>CPU at 75dC, crap
>Opens the (live) PC, CPU fan is not spinning
>Has put the header on one pin to a side
>Unplugs and replugs it correctly
>Fan suddenly starts spinning very fast and cuts my finger
>Finally closes the case once more. All issues resolved
...Its situations like these that make me wonder... What would happen it I had to work with servers in person, physically lol8 -
Company I work for issues Macs to everyone, and it's a software company. I'm not a MacOS fan. Tried for 3 months, still irritates me. Now I have Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro, and the world is right again. You can't imagine the flack I get!!!!12

Does the devrant store "have" to be called a "swag" store? It makes me feel like I'm a teenage Justin Bieber fan when I browse it, for some reason..7

My godmother asked me to repair her PC... so when opening the case i realized that her "shady"(improvised wires) case fan was not working... so i tried to connect its molex wire to the psu, and realized i neded an wire adaptor because the psu could not support that fan(only had one molex, female, not male and female), but I gave it a try... long story short... I SHORT-CIRCUITED THE PC...(but it restarted after 10 minutes of me dying of fear that i destroyed her pc...)6

Felt great because I overclocked my 7700k to over 5.2GHz (with a tower fan). A few days later I was streaming Overwatch, won a match, blue screened...
So close to winning the silicone lottery!5 -

not really a rant;
But I am a real fan of sci-fi stuff, and yesterday I tried star citizen for the first time (been backer since 2012).
I have not slept yet9 -
switched from windows 10 to kubuntu 18.10 (yes it's not arch or gentoo) last week, after the previous system crashed and burned
I had no idea, my laptop can be so fast and work almost entirely without a fan. Live is beautiful again!1 -
Any idea how to make a fan in an HP laptop spin at lower temperatures? The fan in my Pavilion dm-1 only starts spinning when CPU reaches 75°C and enters full speed when the GPU also becomes 75°C. Which is strange because this CPU and GPU are one and the same thing.. an APU. And overheating freezes often happen at around 75-80°C.. which isn't too much of a headroom really. I'd rather have it kick in at 50-60°C already, but would like to avoid using the power of the soldering iron for it.. I've already lost a fan to that previously (current one is a spare part from AliExpress). Granted, my soldering experience was much less back then.. nowadays I can probably even solder 1206 SMD packages comfortably. But I don't want to risk it, and I've got experience with custom kernels anyway.. are there any fan speed governors in the kernel that you know of?
FWIW, fancontrol doesn't seem to be supported on this laptop, and neither is pwmconfig. Perhaps I'll have to stick to the electronics method after all? Given that it's just a 5V fan, I guess that I could feed it power by tapping some power from a USB rail and controlling its speed from an ATtiny85.. but inside the laptop there isn't enough space for that and I don't feel like freeing this hardware out of its laptop chassis yet (though that is on the list). Either way running at 60°C under no load is terrible.. some HP certified enganeering "feature" I guess...4 -
So i had the second talk with this company today. The backend developer somehow expected me to know all four benefits of jQuery. What the hell dude?
Nobody knows everything.
I’m not a big fan of jQuery period.9 -
Stranger Things Fan: Have you seen Stranger Things? It's really good. You NEEEEED to watch it. Now.
Firefox Quantum Fan: Have you used FireFox Quantum? It's safe, fast, and uses less RAM. I don't know why it has such a low market share. You neeeeeeeed to use it! NOW.4 -
I'm a big fan of 'as' keyword in Python. It makes importing packages in the beginning of the code so slick.
Instead of doing:
> import what
> what.does.the.fox.say()
You can neatly do:
> from what import does.the.fox as fox
> fox.say() -
My GPU blocks the airflow from the lower front intake fan to the CPU, so I wanted to have a fan in the 5.25" drive bay directly targeting the CPU.
While that bay fits a 140mm fan nicely, there was no mounting point. I ended up making four fan struts out of the metal covers for the 5.25" inserts, the ones that you wiggle out. Drilled holes into the case, a bit of foam above and below the fan to seal the larger gaps, and done.
The trick is ofc that the 5.25" case covers are meshed and hence act both as air intake and dust filter. The CPU runs a few K cooler under load.14 -
What's the funniest combination of commands/keywords/variables you've seen?
I'm a big fan of "man touch" 😂
Also, a colleague named an instance of System.Threading.SemaphoreSlim to Fatboy (Fatboy Slim, get it? 😏)
Let's hear it!
edit: tounge twisters are also welcome11 -
Just got myself an iPhone se. Was proud android fan for 4 years.
No hate, but android apps really feel like cheap knock-offs.
I'm never coming back.24 -
When all your automated test results come back good... But you just know, deep down, somewhere there's a plate of shit sitting too close to a fan.... waiting!1

Finally finished my new app Deep Sleep Fan for iOS. Took 3x as long as I thought it would to develop even though it used a shared code base. Check it out at https://itunes.apple.com/app/...

So being a fan of Silicon Valley i found out there's a real startup company with a Voice-controlled tablet device called "Nucleus".
Irony is they are suing the same company which invested in it and then copied it's product....(Amazon)3 -

Guess what my old Windows 8.1 laptop and a Nintendo 64 have in common?
Neither have a goddamn fan or a CMOS battery!!! I shit you not, I opened up my old windows 8.1 computer from like 2012 and it did not have a fan. Instead it had a large piece of metal connected to a CPU as a heatsink. It also never had a CMOS battery since the solder pads have never been used.7 -
At first I wasn't crazy about it,. but I think I'm hooked now. I am a big fan of fira mono. I switched my xterm to use it, and it's really distinct and helpful. I highly recommend giving it a try.

Monday morning we found out our main event queue hadn't processed since late Wednesday afternoon. Shit was hitting the fan and we were stumped. What had changed?!?. Why wasn't the queue processor running?!?
Turns out a server restart had killed the job (no worries there, surely?!) but turns out the job checked for a system flag on disk to stop it running multiple instance or in this case as the flag was still present any instance at all. Got to love the little things that really screw you over.6 -
Android fan boys: WOW! Android O Dev Preview released! Time for numerous commits.
Apple fan boys: Apple so needs to implement these features in the next update 😂 -

Anyone recalls my raspberry's hotfix for overheating problem?
Frankly I am considering it as a long-term solution. I currently have a proper rpi fan applied but it's just too freaking noisy! I thought my work lappy is noisy when at 90C. But this tiny rpi fan is just.. Painfully loud! Especially when rpi is suppised to be tiny and invisible.
Soo.. Yeah.. 3"" fan for an rpi it is!9 -

It got so hot in the house today my grandmother's ceiling fan melted inside. It gets up to 350°F when it's spinning now and fucking SCREAMS.
Here are the charred-ass screws we pulled out.7 -
So, in opengl 4.x, there are no primitives for circle, and the only ways to draw an almost perfect circle are following
Draw a triangle fan and fk up your memory for a circle
Draw a rectangle and use the fragment shader and distance equation to discard the bit that is not used
But you will need to add an if statement and potentially increase the frame time (from what i have heard)
And it will be more complicated than just using a triangle fan14 -
Made my first creation with bunifu tools for vb.net Its an injector. I think it looks nice .p (for the first time)

Story, !rant.
So after previously telling the story of my laptop in the rain, I thought I should follow up with this one. (this is couple months later)
My laptop was bought second hand by my father (who doesn't know anything about computers) and the poor thing had a tendency to overheat. It worked fine, but under heavy load it would only last a couple minutes before it shut down.
So once I was cleaning out the fan (as dust accumulated in there) and I ran it under the tap, to get everything off. Sure, you might cringe at the idea but I thought some water wouldn't hurt it, especially after surviving en evening in the rain. So I cleaned it and let it dry.
A while later, when it finished drying I started to reassemble my laptop. After about 30 mins of fiddling with it, it was back together and ready for a fresh start! So I powered it on.
Sparks flew. Smoke started coming off the motherboard. More sparks.
😯
I pulled the cord. "Fuck, glad I caught it on time..."
I waited a while longer. Turn it back on. "Fan is not functioning properly or is missing". FML. After all it had survived, a bit of water in the circuit that made the fan spin is what took it down 😑
Fast forward two years (without a fan, shitty days), and I bought a second hand Lenovo laptop that I adore. So I thought I'd sell the laptop on Ebay, but first I should fix the fan so that I wouldn't have to sell it for next to nothing. Part number was hard to find, and bought it from somewhere in Europe. Four weeks later, the fan arrived at my doorstep.
Took the laptop apart (have I mentioned how hard that was?) and replaced the fan. Felt good to fix what I had ruined two years back. Put it back together (after applying thermal paste, I'm not a monster) and powered it on.
"Fan is not functioning properly or is missing"
😑
After checking the connection a couple times, I realized that what had given out was the motherboard connector for the fan, after the water incident. Wasted 40 dollars and several hours of my time for nothing.
The laptop that survived hours in the rain was taken down by a wee bit of water. So sad.2 -
I have already been a big fan of Elixir for some time now, but seeing this during my inquiry into Elixir's official catalog of documentation has defanitely galvanized my already colorful opinion of this grate language.4

I always thought a redesign of the economy was in order making several interfaces to allow automation and removing the wow like game controls making it instead a flight combat sim7 -
I don't know about you, but ever since I joined devrant I started learning JavaScript frameworks (because everyone talks about it) but I gotta tell you I am not a fan: I prefer programming algorithms and solve ctfs(deep into this). Who's with me?1
-
I used to be a fan of Google designs but that all white shit is just too much, the developer console (aka Play console) is annoying and less organized and blinds my eyes!4
-
I am not a fan of programs that want to store their libraries in your home directory. It's alright if they store it in a hidden folder at least. I like my home directory to be nice and clean~~3
-
It's almost like everytime I open the BitBucket pipeline logs my pc starts running the pipeline instead of BitBucket
Even visiting the logs spins up my fan so quickly that it's noticable for the people around me.
Instead of launching a pipeline it launches my pc3 -
Let's talk fans. I've skimmed through beQuiet and noctua, but couldn't find the type I need. Are there quiet laptop fans out there?
Here's my case. I have an LED projector. As projectors are, it's somewhat loud. Not painfully annoying, but still. I wonder how could I make it quieter.
I had it disassembled to see what fan it has. It looks like an oversized laptop fan. Like 12cm or so.. I was thinking I could buy a silent fan, tear it apart, take its axis with blades and pop it in the original projector fan case. Problem is, I can't find any quiet laptop fans, be it normal size or oversized. Aren't there any? If so - why? Are there other means to quiet a fan like this down? I mean apart from cleaning and oiling - that's already done.15 -
Huh. I'm the only one here right now. I should have just worked from home. But I don't have A/C at home. ... I should buy a fan on the way home.
-
Not a fan of legacy products which make use of a tonne of TSQL stored procedures, especially when they include a mess of logic, spelling errors, no version control of course, all squirreled away for some unlucky person to find and unpick in years to come.

Anyone else noticed Google's new dark text colour?
I thought I was going colour blind looking at VS for too long when I saw. Not a fan of #222222 on #ffffff. -
Not a big fan of iPhone’s touch points. They don’t feel intuitive at all to me. Maybe it’s my 8 years of Android experience talking.1
-
Anyone else here a massive fan of ggplot2?
I love the whole TidyVerse package library (such a well designed workflow) and ggplot2 is the crowing jewel, a thing of real tangible beauty, a reason to love R, even though its indexes start at 1.. -
Trying to figure out what I should learn, I have a little experience with PHP (Though I am not a huge fan of it). I have thought about Node.js and Ruby but I cant decide. Anyone know what I should learn as a backed language?6
-
God, I wish I had even 2-3 friends that did web dev. I know a bunch of people on Discord who do rom hacking and fan games, but no web devs. :sad:7
-
😡 So I just updated to OS X High Sierra and I noticed my MBP 2015 gets hot very fast. This was not happening when I was using Sierra before.
Is it just me? Was my MBP fan speed affected by High Sierra?4 -
Anyone else a fan of Android: Netrunner? I believe it's one of the only (tabletop) games that depict hackers accurately2

3D Printer problems
Anet A8
Fan problem.
Hey guys.
So, I have a problem with my printer.
The fan that cools the printed model (fan1) isn't working... and everything seems fine.
What should I do to find out what the problem is?
Thanks18 -
There is a table right under the fan on which I put a hot cup of coffee add suger to it. Now comes the good part.
I tie myself upside down with sealing fan right above table. Holding a spoon in one hand. Start the fan with a stick. Throw the stick. Just after speed is steady put the spoon in cup and let it stear.
Drink this coffe upside down.
It will increase productivity by 10000million%.
Cheers:)2 -
That font in the new Gmail theme is fucking ugly and makes me blind
Wish we could use something else at work :\
I'm not a fan of mail apps but I guess it is time to use one after that update....6 -
So my processor fan will no longer fit in my mobo, caused by 3 out of 4 stands broken. I don't want to fry my CPU, so won't be using it until the replacement arrives.
Time to experience a different life for time being?3 -
Need some help choosing a laptop (budget is up to 2000 EUR)
Initially 6 months ago I bought Dell G5 (5587) for 1300 EUR and it had i7 8750H CPU, 6GB NVDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD+1TB HDD.
However turned out to be a piece of shit because dell fucked up their thermal management badly and they don't give proper access for their users to control the fans. Even when you force fan control via Windows test build then you will face a dissapointment since most games won't run properly on Windows test mode. So anyways I got rid of that laptop. For more info you can have a look here https://dell.com/community/... and there are dozens of topics on reddit about that.
So yeah currently looking for a decent gaming/movies/coding laptop which gives full access to undervolting/fan control.
Currently I'm looking into Razer Blade 152 -
Not dev related really
but for mobile, do you guys know of any great tablet-compatible launchers? I got MEmu recently, and i'm not a fan of the default launcher. I found an ok marshmallow 6.0 launcher, but i wanna know if you guys use something different4 -
Anyone not a fan of Material Design especially the ripple effect? If not a fan, please tell me why. If yes, please tell me why, too.
For me, I feel like there's too much animation going on and I agree to someone that said it's cognitively distracting and it kinda breaks my train of thought. Any thoughts you can share?13 -
Hello devs,
Any recommendation for managed mongodb service provider and server provider?
I am usually a fan of Digital Ocean but DO doesn't seem like a good option for mongodb (especially for mongo-noobs)4 -
Went to download Kubuntu over Ubuntu since I'm not a fan of Unity. Error message during install, crashed computer, have to reinstall Ubuntu using backup USB -.-4

Oke... I do NOT want to start a war about PHP because i am usually a big fan, but this just blew my mind.

I'm actually a huge fan of elementary and the appcenter - it's so nice just to have a small collection of well-written, good looking apps that do one thing well3
-
I got to say, I'm not a fan of C++. Why can't they give a proper error box stating what the hell went wrong instead of going "NOT RESPONDING!"2
-
Does anybody remember the somethingawful forums (https://forums.somethingawful.com/), and did you ever go there just to get a good laugh when the shit was hitting the fan at work?3
-
Anyone know how to make a persistent backdoor with Kali, without setting off any AV? I can make the payload fine, but when setting persistence, shit hits the fan
-
How you fix a noisy ultrabook?
My ears are bleeding now because of this fucker's unstoppable fan.13 -
Rant
Alright these fuck heads need to learn what the term flexible means. Flexible is when shit hits the fan you can adapt, not changing shit last fucking second, not telling me, then getting bent out of fucking shape. -
Always love debating different switches with coworkers. What is your favorite blues, browns, reds, or some other type of switch?
Personally, I am a fan of Cherry Blues.1 -
Question for all the WP Haters: what do you use as a CMS in place of WordPress?? I am a fan of WP for an easy to use / deploy CMS, but am looking for other CMS to test out.6

Wow I just thought I had lost my good old friend forever - my laptop did not want to turn non anymore and since the main fan is somewhat broken, I thought I'd never see him alive anymore and that he died from overheating thus I opened it, plugged it to the power connector and voila, it works again - whew, that was a shocking moment for me and I guess it's finally time to replace that fan.7
-
Guys, I'm a big fan of Linux OS, and also a big fan of Visual Studio (+ Code).
If this is not against rules, could you (the whole Linux Comunity) help and wote up on this link
https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/...
It a "request" that MS releases Linux version of Visual Studio (I know that there is MonoDevelop already) who is at least close to MS VS (maybee missing some functionalities, just like VS Mac)8 -
While listening to my own thoughts when talking to an windows fan boy defending the boat nevertheless it sinks deeper over time maybe 🤔

Not a fan of the new avatars. Every avatar looks because is big yellow head and it feels confusing scanning through comments.6

Downloaded Firefox Quantum after the hype. Opened it. Loaded a website. Closed it again 😂
What are the dev tools like? I was never a fan on the FF dev tools for some reason. Are they more comparable to Chrome now?5 -
How does your team approach code reviews? What sort of processes/tools do you make use of?
Currently my team uses TFS (which I'm not a huge fan of). I'm trying to figure out how to track issues (requests) and the code review process.8 -
So yeah Microsoft, all your new windows 10 updates look great in theory, but I would rather you not burning my goddamn laptop!!! now the fan is crazy !!

Hello Devs!

Having a day where everything hits the fan but I'm on top of it all.
I really do love this line of work 😊 -
So my desktop suddenly stops working in the middle of a Skype call. I open up the cabinet and the processor fan wire has been plugged out with subtlety. No visible damage of short circuits. What sorcery is this?1
-
At my old job, using a simple text editor and a separate terminal was touted as being "archaic." "Why not use emacs or intellij?" They'd say... is anyone else also a fan of simplicity?1

Although I am a huge fan of stack overflow, I am sick and tired of them always blocking me to ask new questions. I feel like I should start asking questions on Devrant.3
