Today, @trogus and I are very happy to announce a devRant feature that we’ve been working on for many months. After extensive time and money investment, it’s finally here! Introducing, pixelated avatars!
@trogus came up with this awesome idea about a year ago, but we couldn’t get it just right so we had to tons of work/research to make those pixelated avatars give the full sense of retro and ULTIMATE pixelation. We think everyone will appreciate how this effort turned out.

99.999999% of the reason I like UWP is because of the Acrylic. It is a pain in the ASS to use otherwise.
Here's a small pixel art program I'm working on I guess.
After 10 years of thinking of getting into gamedev, I just joined a team game jam and it's going somewhere.
4 months ago I wrote a rant about how difficult it was for me to get into gamedev.
I guess I finally started because:
a) I'm not doing this alone
b) Another person takes care of the art
Regarding "a", computing, programming can be a very lonely task. I realized how much I missed the college years where I was paired up with other people to do something
There's something magical about being in a team.
You may not be a fan of your mates personalities. You may even hate their guts.
But working on something together, when everyone does the thing they should do, when things just flow... it's just magical.
When that happens, "all the bullshit goes away"™, and it's just you and your team sharing the same hope.
As for "b", I think I realized that, at least for my way of thinking, art (even in an initial, rudimentary state) is what ends up creating a game.
While I always tried to do it the other way around, first the game, then the art.
Maybe now I could dabble into pixel art and then use that as the thing that would define the game.
I was also an emotional mess for most of my 20s (and still kinda am, but not that much), so I guess that made getting into gamedev hard too.
Now, here's the negative part: the guy that does the art (and also codes) sucks balls at communicating and at git.
He takes a shitload of time to respond, doesn't address the things I state are important, doesn't join the damn trello, sometimes gives me some sass on his comments.
And he accidentally overwrote my changes on git three times.
The good thing is that he acknowledges his fuckups and fixes them.
I'm not really mad though. I'm almost 30, he's 20 or so.
When I was 20 I was a goddamn mess.
And it's just a week, and the pleasure of working with someone is far greater.6

I've been watching a few horror games made with RPG Maker. People say games made using it are shit which of course, makes me want to try it even more. It's on sale right now and I could use something to go along with my plan to practice pixel art again. I read a lot of reviews that say it doesn't require programming. It would be a nice new relaxing hobby if that's the case but I searched for what language can be used for it anyway, just in case. Older versions say Ruby and I was like, "Perfect, I remember Ruby. It was pretty neat. I don't mind working with it." I checked the newer versions and found out that they moved from Ruby to JS a long time ago.
After several hours of "Fuck no, I'm not touching that on my free time", I decided to grow up and get it anyway. Who knows? Maybe the games I make are so shitty that I wouldn't have to script at all. It would just be a hobby and maybe a more comfortable way of telling a story.
Well, I hope I enjoy doing this. The monotony of pandemic living is driving me insane. I skipped a whole Saturday sleeping.15
So I'm not one to show off something buuuuuuut, I'm a programmer and can barely draw a straight line let alone do pixel art, but I decided fuck it; let's try again and considering the left figure was the first compared to the right being the 10th, I'd say that's not to fucking bad :-D4
So I've had a fan game idea in the back of my head and have no artistic friends or money to hire an artist so I'm attempting the pixel art myself (again) and in the past 2 hours I have drawn a sort of shit looking barstool... Ugh why can't I have ideas that can survive with developer art -.-3

This basically is me rambling all my thoughts that have been clouding my mind.
Learning other programming languages after learning the first is harder than I expected. I learned python first but that's making learning others (which I know arent similar but ) C, ES6, PHP, etc. I need to figure out what makes each one special and get a proper path instead of learning them all the same way. Which is easier for the web dev languages but fuck man I just need a good path for them and I'm good. Like learn this this this this that and that and I've got a basic understanding of the language I dont need to stress and I can casually build my knowledge from here now that I understand all this. Cause I love programming and I want to be the best I can be and just get to the level I am with python. And at some point I have to learn about basic electronics and learning how to program Arduinos with C so I can do stuff with that because I really really REALLY want to.
It doesnt stop there. I want to learn another language and no I'm not talkin bout programming anymore I mean I wanna learn Japanese and German (but japanese primarily) but it doesnt help that I'm always either in school, studying, programming, or playing games. I just cant find time to practice Hiragana&Katakana (two basic writing systems in japan) and it doesnt help that I'm a lazy procrastinating piece of shit that doesnt have or can keep a proper schedule and hell I barely can English and Its my native tongue. Ugh. Itd be better if I had a native speaker to help me tbh.
And finally I want to learn basic pixel animating I have dreamed as a kid to do some kind of animation and programming and I want to do both for games I want to program for fun but it doesnt help that I cant draw sprites or anything for shit. I cant get it and I just am fucked but I'm going to ask some people I know and a few subreddits for advice/help/resources with that

So at our company, we use Google Sheets to for to coordinate everything, from designs to bug reporting to localization decisions, etc... Except for roadmaps, we use Trello for that. I found this very unintuitive and disorganized. Google Sheets GUI, as you all know, was not tailored for development project coordination. It is a spreadsheet creation tool. Pages of document are loosely connected to each other and you often have to keep a link to each of them because each Google Sheets document is isolated from each other by design. Not to mention the constant requests for permission for each document, wasting everybody's time.
I brought up the suggestion to the CEO that we should migrate everything to GitHub because everybody already needed a Github account to pull the latest version of our codebase even if they're not developers themselves. Gihub interface is easier to navigate, there's an Issues tab for bug report, a Wiki tab for designs and a Projects tab for roadmaps, eliminating the need for a separate Trello account. All tabs are organized within each project. This is how I've seen people coordinated with each other on open-source projects, it's a proven, battle-tested model of coordination between different roles in a software project.
The CEO shot down the proposal immediately, reason cited: The design team is not familiar with using the Github website because they've never thought of Github as a website for any role other than developers.
Fast-forward to a recent meeting where the person operating the computer connected to the big TV is struggling to scroll down a 600+ row long spreadsheet trying to find one of the open bugs. At that point, the CEO asked if there's anyway to hide resolved bugs. I immediately brought up Github and received support from our tester (vocal support anyway, other devs might have felt the same but were afraid to speak up). As you all know, Github by default only shows open issues by default, reducing the clutter that would be generated by past closed issues. This is the most obvious solution to the CEO's problem. But this CEO still stubbornly rejected the proposal.
2 lessons to take away from this story:
- Developer seems to be the only role in a development team that is willing to learn new tools for their work. Everybody else just tries to stretch the limit of the tools they already knew even if it meant fitting a square peg into a round hole. Well, I can't speak for testers, out of 2 testers I interacted with, one I never asked her opinion about Github, and the other one was the guy mentioned above. But I do know a pixel artist in the same company having a similar condition. She tries to make pixel arts using Photoshop. Didn't get to talk to her about this because we're not on the same project, but if we were, I'd suggest her use Aseprite, or (at least Pixelorama if the company doesn't want to spend for Aseprite's price tag) for the purpose of drawing pixel arts. Not sure how willing she would be at learning new tools, though.
- Github and other git hosts have a bit of a branding problem. Their names - Github, BitBucket, GitLab, etc... - are evocative of a tool exclusively used by developers, yet their websites have these features that are supposed to be used by different roles other than developers. Issues tabs are used by testers as well as developers. Wiki tabs are used by designers alongside developers. Projects and Insights tabs are used by project managers/product owners. Discussion tabs are used by every roles. Artists can even submit new assets through Pull Requests tabs if the Art Directors know how to use the site interface (Art Directors' job is literally just code review, but for artistic assets). These websites are more than just git hosts. They are straight-up Jira replacement with git hosting as a bonus feature. How can we get that through the head of non-developers so that we don't have to keep 4+ accounts for different websites for the same project?4
When I was creating pixel art creator program and each pixel was an separated object, performance was horrible, and after 2 days of intensive thinking I figured it out. I made working canvas. Ram usage dropped by 1800% and speed increased by 40000%. My satisfaction was unimaginable.3
I was working on some ground sprites for a personal project and the inside corners became a sun :) p.s. it's not an animated gif.
I would like to play Pokemon emerald because I'm building a game based on it's graphics and I need a source for my pixel art.
Can any of you fine folks drop suggestions on where to play the full game? I'm looking for Linux and windows solutions, would prefer some website rather than downloading emulators (Just for the ease of it) but am open to emulators if they are trustworthy.
I also would like to play other Pokemon games in the future so bonus points if the solution is flexible to that.

Today I got a message from a "friend" of @Alice and me, for a long time. And I was already ranting by myself, because this little fucker is writing maybe two or three times a year, just to have a computer support, like now. He needed help, because a game was crashing everytime at a specific point, and I advised him to reinstall the game, which he can't, because of his slow internet. His answer stated, that he would have only slow internet right now. After this I explained him, that his internet is for around 2.5 years slow. And 2.5 years aren't "right now". I'm still waiting for any reaction.

I am not going to lie and say my laptop hardshell looks great with the stickers as I stuck them on as I went along so it's all over the place 🤷♂️

I started learning how to draw pixel art.
I bought aseprite and will be drawing some 16x16 pixels.
Do you know any useful guides ?
What I’m interested is character drawing and animation.
Drawing objects and nature like trees, boxes and stuff.
I already found some useful stuff about tile sets.
Once I finish drawing couple hundred of tilesets I want to proceed to more complicated stuff.3

A game. A simple pixel-art, 2D game.
I told myself I'd start it after wrapping up other projects. When I did, I checked the docs for Electron and Phaser and... Well, lemme do some Node projects first...
Why must pixel perfect scaling be so fucking hard... It all works perfectly but I'm limited to a max of 540p for the games camera view but as soon as you drop your resolution bellow 1080p you get stuck with 300p or lower... Ughhhhhhhh
Why did I choose to do pixel art... Wonder if converting everything to vectors would help, wonder is smashing my head into a fucking wall would help...
Contemplating ideas for a game that will involve some exploration and puzzles (aimed at teaching some low-level computer stuff like binary etc.) Replayed an old 2D game in an emulator, looked at some old adventure games, decided a 2D platformer might work for what I'm aiming for.
So I start making some pixel art, simple things like 32x32 tiles for bricks, some bigge ones for doors etc. And I discuss some ideas with my girlfriend for what kind of scenarios would fit into this game world.
Anyway, she normally draws and paints, but seemed interested in trying pixel art so I gave her a link to Piskel and a rough idea of some decorative items I'd want to put around the map. Within a few hours she created a flower pot with flowers, a coffee machine, a light with lightshade, a small pile of books, and a couple of other things - all shaded and detailed beyond any of my attempts, including lighting going from left to right (which I wanted but didn't specify).
I mean, I could've expected this but pixel art is quite a different beast to drawing or painting as you have to do more with less.
Now I just need to make my game engine. So far I have an SDL program with a flowerpot that you can move around xD1
