During some late coding I started wondering why on earth someone beamed a headlight through my window, until I realized it was the sun...
I got a lot of stuff done though

My guess is that The Sun Never Sets on devRant. Is that true? How many countries and continents do we have members represented in?167

Fun fact: Michael Widenius named "MySQL" after his daughter My. When MySQL was acquired by sun, he decided to start a new open source database, "MariaDB", named after his second daughter Maria.
This guy is (partially) responsible for two of the largest databasesystems in the world.
Imagine his daughters apply for a database engineering job one day. During application process: "One of the largest databases in the world was named after me..." 😂19 -
woke up at 5am
no alarm clock was required
my fucking passion woke me up to get up and code.
i coded outside in my backyard
felt like cold war
it was night
it was dark
a depressing horror atmosphere
just like my whole life
2 hours later i started seeing sun
it was cold outside. alone. in the dark. my arms were freezing.
but 2 hours later i managed to code the feature. it worked.
3 hours have passed. im ripped. quentally.
doing it here. inside now. started the day happy. dropped bullshit from day before. cleanser of all toxicss.
fuck the past. the past will pull you down and kill you.
this. remember. always do not forget.7 -

It's such a lovely day, sun is shining, think I'll sit outside with my laptop and a beer and continue working on personal project.
(...goes outside)
It's too bright, can't see shit, plus working on two screens is easier

I just woke up, the sun is out...
Crap I must missed my alarm!
Wait is only 6am....
I love summer? Except for the heat7 -
Got some swag in the mail today.
I was told I could get a refund for the hat if it was too small. I literally have the biggest head in the world and it fits me fine.
For those who complained, did you try taking it off and on again?6 -
Her: What do you do?
Me: I'm writing my thesis on bringing AI to smartphones.
Her: I think AI is terrible!
Me: oh, you are an engineer too?
Her: No
Me: oh, you've studied economics and or ethics and are worried about its implications on society?
Her: No, but have you?
Me: I have a degree in economics, an MBA and an now about to get my BSc in CS.
Her: well, regardless I still think it's terrible.
Me: well in that case how about you shove your unfounded opinion where the sun don't shine!18 -
Current PM in the morning: "Startup flexibility! I'm at the beach chilling in the sun! I trust you can do standup without me! #tech-detox #positive-energy"

So this morning my girlfriend just woke up and pressed the hue "lights off" button over and over again and yelled: "The fuckin light switch does not work". Then she realized, that the light comes from the sun.1

In the project management system we use with our clients I see file named, 'instructions for backup.'
I open the file and all it contains is my name and phone number.😑4 -
So this happened to me today.
After spending the whole night coding / watching Netflix I was sitting in my chair and looking at my screen with VSCode (dark theme of course) open. It was pretty dark in my room because the only source of light was my computer screen, which was still pretty dark because of the dark theme.
So, while looking at my code I suddenly noticed that the room had gotten a bit brighter. I wondered wtf was going on.
I looked out the window and saw that the sun was rising. Then I looked at the clock:
5:30 am.
Me: 'oh, lol'14 -

I ran out of instant noodles and had to go out to buy some, and literally the first thought that came to my mind was "Why the fuck is the sun so bright"
No, seriously, why does it feel so bright1 -
You know that you have fucked up another night when you are browsing devrant and your phone turns off the soft-color-night-mode because the sun has infact rise.
Fuck my life, another fucked up night and following day2 -
Purchase $900 laptop, it's not powerful enough so I return it and get $1,100 laptop, still not powerful enough, return it and get $1,600 laptop. Realize I have a gaming PC and don't need the laptop this powerful and I return it and repurchase the first laptop I bought with a $100 discount because it's now an opened-box, but I know for a fact that it was the one that I got in the first place and opened.
Thanks Best Buy.3 -
You know you're passionate when you won't sleep until it works. Then after it worked, you're not satisfied. You still want to make it robust and then...
"Is that the sun?"
Being a programmer is such a roller coaster feeling. Sometimes, you extremely hate what you're doing. But you still persevere and that's just wonderful.

Today my cat, my oldest girlfriend, passed away. She chose to be in the sun for her passing. I'm happy she had a good life in the end with all the space she needed. She did not suffer. It was sudden and just a cardiac arrest.
May she hunt many more mice and little birds in the afterlife.21 -

Almost ever day I am the first one at office in the early morning. Other devs arrive at least one or two hours later. I don't mind. I just want to have a bit of sun left, when I go.
But why the heck...everytime I go, one of those other fucktards (which I normally really like), mumbles something like "you go this early today?"
Yes I do you dipshit!! You could arrive earlier, too!
And then, those late birds get credit for staying longest!!!
I mean, sure... If you start to work at 11pm, you have to stay long...

This always makes me smile.
1996 - James Gosling invents Java. Java is a relatively verbose, garbage collected, class based, statically typed, single dispatch, object oriented language with single implementation inheritance and multiple interface inheritance. Sun loudly heralds Java's novelty.
2001 - Anders Hejlsberg invents C#. C# is a relatively verbose, garbage collected, class based, statically typed, single dispatch, object oriented language with single implementation inheritance and multiple interface inheritance. Microsoft loudly heralds C#'s novelty.

Came out to the country with my wife and her friends. We were all sat around in the sun and I asked what we were going to do. She said we can do whatever we want. So I got my laptop and sat in the shade. She then had a go at me for being unsociable. FFS7

Once the system "lost" a user_id var that says who started a batch, but it was a mandatory field that was filled at the beginning of the process.
I tried to find the reason, failed, called a senior for help, he also failed to find the reason.
After a couple of hours I looked to him, he looked back and I said,
"Let's call it a solar flare bit flip?"
"It's the only logical explanation"
So it became a bit flip issue to the PM, we had a good laugh, we send as "system instability" to the client.
The bug never happened again, no one ever found the true reason, maybe it was really a bit flip 🤔1 -
You'd think that with OLED screens becoming the norm for smartphones people would start offering dark themes in their apps to save a bit of battery and prevent burn-ins, but NOPE there comes Google with their material design and everything is suddenly brighter than the sun, especially YouTube where 3/4th of the screen is static most of the time.
Thank God you can still mod things.6 -
I think devRant should introduce a cactus to give besides the ducks, as I've seen a lot of people here wanting to shove cactuses on others where the sun doesn't shine. 😂7

If you ever find yourself having serious problem with a bug... relax. Go take a walk around the block for 5-10 minutes, don't think about it, feel the sun on your face, look at girls/guys, whatever.
The answer will come to you automatically.
If that doesn't work, someone you know has adderal.2 -

Thanks Sun/Oracle for the clever API design. ;)

Yes I believe you’re Google and I will click that link.
I don’t care that IP from that you sent it to me is from some company in India.
Probably Google outsourced it’s email service there.
But wait why is this link pointing to Chinese website?
Ouch you provided some ip under A dns record so let me nmap it...
So there’s bunch of services you have there.
ftp, ssh, msrpc, netbios-ssn, snpp, microsoft-ds, sun-answerbook ...wait what ?
Let me curl that 8888 port.
Oh you have login / password form and it’s pagoda linux panel.
Wait a second I will read about it maybe some default login / password will work...
Ok so maybe I just make a script to brute force it as you wanted to brute force my computer motherfucker.2 -

Data Engineering cycle of hell:
1) Receive an "beyond urgent" request for a "quick and easy" "one time only" data need.
2) Do it fast using spaghetti code and manual platforms and methods.
3) Go do something else for a time period, until receiving the same request again accompanied by some excuse about "why we need it again just this once"
4) Repeat step 3 until this "only once" process is required to prevent the sun from collapsing into a black hole
5) Repeat steps 1 to 4 until it is impossible to maintain the clusterfuck of hundreds of "quick and simple" processes
6) Require time for refactoring just as a formality, managers will NEVER try to be more efficient if it means that they cannot respond to the latest request (it is called "Panic-Driven Development" or "Crappy Diem" principle)
7) GTFO and let the company collapse onto the next Data Engineering Atlas who happens to wander under the clusterfuck. May his pain end quickly.2 -
I'm so sleepy today and the sun is so strong... Can't see shit, almost can't look at the screen even.
I might be doing some blind merges today.9 -

Here's to the next orbit around the sun y'all!
Hope we all push unit tested code with the least number of to-do's, and fix more bugs than we create!2 -

So I reach office early , bcz I like to have sun left when I go home.
Other devs arrive almost 3-4 hours after me. And when it's time to leave,
They : you leave so early
Me : yes you ahole. I come early too.
And then they get credits for staying long I'm like yeah if you come at 12-1 you have to stay back.
So fucking frustrating.7 -
Mother fucking cunts should be shot into the sun...

Not even a beach can prevent a dev from working.
Here I am, six days into vacationing. My girls are playing in the pool behind me, their mother is sunbathing and absolutely rocking a golden bikini, the sun is setting on this magnificent beach and my baby boy is even asleep besides the pool noise.
And dumbshit me is here ignoring it all and frantically typing at my phone because apparently it is VERY HARD to convince your team not to let any projects get stale while you're away.
I should go somewhere without wifi next time.11 -

weather is beautiful, sun is shining, I am feeling mischevious. Shall I block stackoverflow on our proxy on Monday?2

Thirty hours over two weeks, but we finally patched a angular app that was originally built on 2 (alpha) to 4, reducing the load time ten fold.
Don't thank me, thank super duck. The duck with the power to debug any code.
Gawd I'm tired.2 -
So we decided to use Monday evenings as a development night for our game, we are currently down the pub enjoying the sun. Maybe next Monday1

My project wouldn't need a robust backend language, or even a fancy frontend framework...
With unlimited time and money, I would give every child under the sun the opportunity to stay alive, to have no fear of poverty or illness, and to prosper in their own way. Only one design pattern needed: HOPE... -
It's a beautiful autumn day. The sun is out, the sky is blue, it's warm and the trees' leaves are already colored magnificently.

Yesterday I talked to my client for 1 hour about a problem she has on my website. When she does something on the administrative website, internet explorer stops working.
Then I told her: "try Google Chrome or Firefox" and I explain why Chrome or Firefox should work. Today, she tells me that it does not work yet and sends me a picture of her screen with the problem (not a print screen, a cell phone photo, with the sun on the screen so I do not see the screen). It was the same problem as the other days. But she was on ... wait for it ... Edge (yes, she's on w10 and she uses Internet Explorer).
So I reply "try Chrome or Firefox.".
I said nothing else and she just thanks me for the help.13 -
Our office has 3 walls made of glass
There are no blinds/curtains/etc
Every day, between about 1pm and 4pm, they Destroyer of Eyeballs hangs in the sky above my monitor, before it finally gets blocked out by another tower block
I now time-track 3hrs less each day - eventually someone will realise that buying blinds is cheaper than paying me to not work 15hrs/week8 -
Got the cheapest laptop I could find that would run Windows mixed reality.
Installed Linux subsystem for Windows and Ubuntu.
Nothing but giant flying terminal windows across my view of a virtual Seascape.
This is my new home.4 -
Was fixing my project for college the whole night... when I finished it was around 07:30, the sun was rising, a steaming mug of coffee in front of me and I was like “That’s why I love this shit so much”3

And here we go!
I am finally in my holiday apartment.
Finally, it is time to sit down and relax for a bit.
I am awake since yesterday. Approximately 2 full days.
The weather in Antalya is not that hot tbh. I almost did not feel any change when I arrived. Just the sun tho. I was completely blinded when I made my first move out of the airplane.
Ps: That picture is from a small town within Antalya and about an hour away from the "real" Antalya.1 -
Acquaintance of mine brags that he made a "Facebook password cracker" that took less than 30 lines of code.
I take a look at it, then I realize it's brute force password cracking.
Oh dear.
Facebook doesn't even let you do that many password attempts, not to mention that brute forcing passwords is going to take more time than the expected lifetime of the sun. (exaggeration? Maybe. But you get my point.)
Why are we still here? Just to suffer?6 -
Where do you go/what do you do when you need to think out a problem?
Me, I take a drive. I'm not sure why but I seem to achieve maximum clairvoyance while driving around. Moreso at night than during the day, but the effect is still there when the sun is up. It's kind of weirdly meditative, to drive autonomously, only hearing the drone of the engine and whisper of the tires.
I know a lot of people resort to showers, or straight meditation, but I was curious if there were other, quirkier things people do to arouse their mind.7 -
The sun, the hot, humid temperature and that new intern with the super tight revealing clothes that sits across from you...17

Tried to be normal and sit outside in the sun while my kid played.

Reviewing code for applications after not working on it for six months.
Client: so what is the first step to adding our new feature.
Me: I really think we need to redo the entire architecture from the ground up. It won't work any differently than it does now, but the code will be cleaner.
Client:😓
Me:😅3 -
I moved about a month ago, the new place has crap curtains (yay for renting 😔) so I was waking up at 5-6am as the sun comes up 😞.
I bought blinds a couple of weeks ago, they've just arrived and all screwed on. I was waking up and getting bored so I started going out running before work. My last job I was the absolute last one in the building every day, yet also the closest. Now, with the running I'm getting in at about the same time but one of the first in my new job.
My new blinds are remote controlled/programmable. It's a bit sad but totally worth it, I'll be able to sleep in, have sunlight waking me up and still get to work at a sensible time, kinda just gives me more time in the day! 😁1 -
fuck time zones and time changes, why the fuck we don’t have one time on the planet and one date that is just day.
No month, no years - all the complexity would be gone, day wouldn’t have 24 hours but it would be something more precise, there won’t be a second
time that earth goes around sun is
365,25964 days
31558432896 milliseconds
we should start count time differently so it’s not relative in space time continuum, what should be relative is the mass38 -
that feeling when you start looking at code after dinner, correct a bug or two, start implementing new features, tweak the code a little bit, you are really focus in your coding... then look out the window and realize the sun is about to come up. it's great 🤓

I don't know whether it's the cabin fever due to been locked indoors or just a really shitty phase.
But lately I am having dooms day feeling and it's just growing stronger.
I feel I am losing everything. Like everything has changed or is changing and life will never be the same good old happy one.
It'll just get darker, is a feeling that haunts me. Maybe I need to get outdoors in the sun.
I am no longer able to enjoy things as much as I did in the past. I lack some passion (maybe I am just surrounded my super negative people irl).
I need more sun. I need an uplifting vibe. I need hope.15 -
This fucking weather. Oh this fucking weather. Neither can you go out, nor can you code. WHY THE FUCK WAS I BORN TO BURN IN THE TROPICS?
Feels like among all the assholes, the Sun likes to screw me the most.
FUUUUCCCCCCKKKKK THIS SHIT. FUCK IT.
FUCK YOU SUN FUCK OFFFFFFFF!! TAKE SOME LIME JUICE AND FUCK YOU BEFORE THE WINTER ARRIVES.13 -
I was absolutely angry, my ego had been wounded. I had built the entire product from scratch, while my bosses just clinged onto one feature that i had not done.
It wasn't even going to be used i knew that and hence was slack. It also required a lot of algo writing.
Post the discussion i decided I'm gonna take out my hurt ego's anger on this algo. I drank whole night and coded. Damn fucking one of the most complex logics i had ever written. It was done and tested while the sun rose. And i slept, next day was a Sunday. I couldn't get hungover.
I was wrong, the logic was used and is one of the core logics of the product. Something that we boast of. 😁rant whiskey algo strikes again algorithm ego wk116 drunk coding algorithms egoistic-devs egotistical -
Wait this is crazy!
Well I'm not an anxious or depressed type.
But no melatonin pill = no sleep
Worst part is no sleep during the day cause of sun light.
Even taking pills won't guarantee my sleep .
Yes I told my doc and he said "just relax , limit your caffeine "
Have you experienced this?31 -
My last company had a code base originating in the 90's and they still write most parts of the GUI with a library that is a thin layer on top of Win32 API, with a self-rolled "ORM" for DB access (with LOTS of enums) and all that with >2million lines of C++ code. The code includes at least two implementations of std vector and std:list. One of which is even *named* std::vector. Feels good remembering that I have left that behind2

Need suggestion:
I gave interview in small company. They give me task to complete one project then we will give you job.
It takes me 2 weeks.
Now they are ready to give me job but they want that project in free of cost. What should I do?7 -
Let's see if my cover really stores heat...
I'm Melting in the shade :( can't work like this.
My nephew and I tryed my convencional milling machine, written half his name. I still got it
Funny thing, I'm noticing now... All the man from my direct family are crazy.
I was helping the mechanic yesterday, telling my adventures and he was always, lik he said father like sun.. The inventors...
Today I finally got my brother for an hour.. He is even crazyer then me, told me just a few of his diys and I'm like... Wow8 -
Standing in the balcony, staring at the setting sun, I wonder to myself, "What does having a null value REALLY mean??🤔"5

What i learned from using JSP: They were actually called “Java’s Satanic Pages”. Sun had to scrub it from docs because Satan threatened to sue them for defamation.2

Well. Fuck.
A sunny monday morning. The sun almost glimpsing over the horizon. I'm on my way to the office, taking a breath of fresh cool air. It is infused by the scent of sweet pastries.
I reach the office, but something is different. Why is the door slightly opened? Carefully I grab the door handle. I do my first step past the doorframe and wooosch. Thick and sticky stuff is running done my spine, finding it's way through my clothes. I feel so un-fucking-believably dirty in this very moment.
This should give you an impression how I felt when I had to change a DNS record in this completely broken setup for just a matter of seconds until the letsencrypt client renewed the certificate.
I'm feeling seriously dirty.1 -
Workplace requires formal dress code. In Italy, in July, with up to 30C (90F) outside. And August is going to be worse.
I have to take a train + walk 10 minutes to get there. And I sweat, like, a lot. I frigging DRIP. It gets embarrassing, and I think I was close to passing out a couple of times in the last few days.
I really don't know how to mitigate the damage. Suggestions?14 -
British summer, the glorious fortnight where outdoor temperatures rise to comfortable levels, the shorts come out, and we see the strange glowing fireball known as "the sun".
And in response, our office aircon is set to "arctic". I'm sat at my desk trying to code while wearing a jacket and gloves.2 -
Last today's project (I think).
The history: a good cover for this pool costs as much as the pool.. The fuckers are selling the pools cheap and accessories really expensive.
7 euros cover that uses the sun to heat the water. Added hocks but no need, only really needed the weights. So... 1 extra hour spent, but I like my hocks :D5 -
What if people, life, humanity, the universe is just a cluster of CPUs running a giant Recurrent Neural Network algorithm? 🤔

-Universal Expansion == the search algorithm

i had a 2-day, sat & sun, coding contest on codingame, but after coding for 24h my mother called me and said that her brother (and my uncle) died from alcoholic addiction

If you don't know what clearing cache does to the state of the fatherfucking app then why do you fucking clear it? It fucking breaks the flow. Your maggot-infested ass is then coming up with his own explanation why you cleared the fucking cache. If you don't even have a cunt of an idea why we use the app's local storage, why do you fucking do it? You neanderthal rotten piece of sun-baked shit.
Hey, the app was taking to much time to send the request, so I cleared the app data. Now I have to login again and start over. Maybe check your fucking internet connection?

So sick of my pessimistic, paranoid supervisor. She's always accusing everyone of being spies and has opinions on everyone.... Complains abt management and everything under the sun.... But when management comes in the room... Quiet as a mouse, because in her words ,'I don't wanna fix anything'
THEN WHY THE FUCK ARE U COMPLAINING!?!?
U clearly see nothing wrong and that's why u don't wanna change it
Fucking hate people who endlessly complain1 -
The Tale of Mouse and Watch
Once upon a time, a mouse wanted to know what time it was. So it asked the first guy who came along, but it didn't understand Suaheli. Anyway, he just had mumbled, gotta kick the cat in its lazy ass.
So the mouse moved on and nearly got it when it met another mouse who bad been sewn to a dead elephant's ear exactly 27 years ago - but unfortunately, it had forgotten the time of day when that had happened.
The seeking mouse came up with the idea of doing something with the sun, but since it was only dumb mouse, it looked right into the sun and was blinded.
Now pretty desperate, it tumbled through the gutters that were full of trash. Accidentally, it fell over a dumped watch, and the mouse broke its nose.
The lesson: sometimes, even a blind mouse may find a broken watch!5 -
Being forced to migrate an application written to to run on Solaris 9, which uses Sun ONE Webserver, Netscape LDAP Server and Cold fusion and migrate it to RHEL 7.3 ppc64le before the 3rd of January (I was only told about the project this morning), and I'm told I *have* to use the exact same technologies and versions. I'm on leave for Xmas from the 22 until the 5th of Jan. I know exactly where they can put their arbitrary management deadlines.2

There should be a launch button wired to the clients' seats in meetings so you can fire them in to the sun while sitting in front.
I don't get how they can be so dimwitted sometimes...1 -
!rant, !dev, random thought
We live in the past. Everything we call the present has already happened, we just aren't immediately aware of it.
For example, if the sun suddenly exploded, we would live for ~8 mins thinking nothing had happened. On the human scale, this still holds although the delays are much smaller. (also, the sun isn't where it appears to be :D)
Our senses deceive us 😯
Open to criticism :) just thought it was an interesting thought.7 -
So Earth just completed another revolution around the Sun and people going craaaazy all over the internet. Like calm down bruh :v3

Fuck these SJWs, what kind of society respects and validates the opinion of irrational, psychologically mutilated humanoids. how long will people let them.
And I don't care if try to mute my freedom of speach, I will say what I wish, whether is sexist, racist, or offensive in general
But what happens when progress decays because of it?! Yesterday, this master/puppet situation, today Linus leaves Linux, what if tomorrow I am not allowed to eat chocolate because it's offensive for the people of Ivory coast who slave for it, what if tomorow I can't say that the sun is blue, because it'd be offensive to colorblind people? Until when is this society going to regress?
I hope live in a modern Babylon world which is to be teared down and burned to ashes, buried deep underground, down by fascist nationalist with no sense of moral freedom of speach and justice, because I feel like it would happen anyways.2 -

For what school cost to me, it will have paid for itself as long as I live for another Thousand Years.1 -

So at one point I worked for an online clothes store and their frontend developers were treated like the sun shined from their backsides, never a problem.
But the backend staff were treated like consumables, their PHP developer turnaround was insane, they'd come up bizarre reasons to let people go including one person who was fired because he argued with a director because how the director wanted their new feature to be programmed was simply broken.
Has anyone seen anything else like this?4 -
Do, as many of you fellow developers, I have a social pressure to do something with my life over the weekends, instead of geeking out or reading new best practices ..
So I finally decided to go see the Irish Curragh regatta organized by the Irish in Barcelona association ..
Nice and sunny Barcelona, besides the sea ..
Came home after three hours with a sun stroke, lobster face, completely blind despite the sun glasses, and with a terrible dizziness .. on my bike!

I have this colleague that who is nice, but if you mention anything about (not complete) java, sun, vmware, windows, daus(dumbest possible user), car manufacturer your ears bleed with is rants about it.
For example:
We talked about BMW which published that the energy generated from recuperation of one of their cars is around 60%. Immediatly he rants that it its not possible and the calculated number of an forum user of the newssite who calculated that 90% of the kinetic energy is regenerated has no idea about the problems.
Sometimes its hard to endure the hate, but i can relate with him in some things.2 -

I don't like coding in the dark anymore. I think I've been doing it for about 2 years but I, just now, realized it.
I never even noticed when I started doing it. I just remember that--when the sun sets and I'm still working--I think to myself "ugh, it's too dark in here".
It just seems crazy to me because I used to love the dark. Not in the broody, ooh I'm a hacker kind of way.. just that I worked better in the dark.
I used to choose afternoon or evening shifts whenever given the choice because my brain works better when it's dark out (if that even makes sense). I used to work inside conference rooms with the lights out or dimmed.
But now, I just caught myself thinking I needed a brighter light in my home office.
Huh. I think I'm getting old.3 -
In from of a cinema. I was doing my BSc thesis involving a GPS receiver. The pointcloud on my pc had to be synchronized with where the receiver was, so it had to be tested outdoor. I and my teacher drove around some streets to see if my code worked, and everytime it didn't we had to stop in a parking lot (the one of a cinema). I couldn't code inside the car because the GPS receiver my laptop was connected to (via USB) didn't get a decent signal there, so I had to fix bugs sat on a brickwork in front of the cinema. My teacher kept looking at my monitor constantly, it was summer with 28°C, the sun hitting on me and my monitor, I couldn't see shit, the sweat of my hands flooding the keyboard. After a while I was saved by my laptop's battery which gave up. Thank you laptop <31

Mac text substitution is coming to Chrome 77!
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/...
...and it's a TERRIBLE BLOODY IDEA. Any Chrome Mac users visiting any sites that display code will likely be shown the substituted crap, unless they've picked up on it and modified their site in time.
Seriously, take these cutsie "oohhhh, I want my ellipsis to display as a *proper* ellipsis character" mindsets and shove them where the sun don't shine. By all means provide the functionality as opt-in via a CSS declaration or whatever, but don't just assume your love of bloody "smart quotes" trumps everyone else's ability to see the *actual content* on the site.

A few years back I was still using a CRT screen and I used to degauss it quite often as a result of having my speakers right next to it. Nowadays I use an LED screen but now I started getting this kind of "degaussing" effect where my vision shakes and waves and I get it quite randomly when looking at lights of different frequencies. (Like the Sun and my phone's screen) It only lasts like 2 seconds at most but I'm wondering if someone has the same problem as me and I would be quite interested to know if this has been caused by the CRT screen or something else.3

Real question, not troll. There is debate about it and I really can't figure it out.
Besides having the title software "engineer," is there really such a thing as a software engineer?
In the US, to be an engineer you have to be regularly tested by a regulated governing body, apprentice under another engineer for years, and be certified on a state level. Whereupon you are personally liable for your designs being FREE from errors.
For one thing, nobody can write bug free code, and the idea of being personally responsible for each bug is terrifying.
And two, I've seen news of people calling themselves software engineers in the USA and Canada and getting a cease and desist or sued for it, despite any level of qualification.
I'm sure there are engineers, especially electrical, computer engineers who also program.
But... ?
I don't know, I can't say either way.
That's why I'm asking.9 -

Wanna make a good outdoor shot but only have a bad camera on hand? No problem!
1. Place the sun into your frame
2. Click it to adjust exposure
3. Shoot
Yes, this limits what you can shoot, as it’s not always possible to keep the sun in the frame. But, in exchange, the sheer amount of light will make your pic _very_ sharp, as if it was engraved, colors will be restrained and balanced on pretty much every camera, noise level will be zero, and a REAL lens flare will serve as a nice finishing touch.2 -
Winter is coming :/
8 hours days, you get up and it’s dark, sun is shining when you’re working and when you finish work it’s dark again.
Moreover I have lots of work so I usually only work, eat, sleep, repeat.
I downloaded 10 movies to watch during my working hours, so I don’t get paranoid to much and see some fake people on tv. Well fml, looks like I was born to work till death, might be first karoshi in my country. Found in bed with laptop, opened intellij and terminal, finger on enter button and in the terminal ./deploy.sh pending for new release. Hope everything will clear before new year and I can manage to clear my todo list. It’s last time I’m saying it’s last time I take so much work instead of sorting out my personal life. Its strange how the process of building a house/building can be so different from building software even if the costs are the same!
Imagine hiring a construction company to construct a building, you give them a vague idea how idea how it should look thinking "i can always change stuff later for now i just need to get this started"
Then when the house is allmost done you say "make the windows bigger and the garage into an office"
After another week you say "we have been thinking and we would really like the living room to be under ground instead of above, and please rotate the entire house so we can have some morning sun" -

Learning about sun solaris, dtrace, zfs and smf after calling the old sun boxes, my colleagues set up, old garbage.
These guys were ahead of us for ages.
If you ever wondered, where all your ram goes, when your application starts or wgy it crashes without further notice, try dtrace.
If you ever wondered of a sophisticated reliable init system would look like, look for the smf init system.
If oracle would already open source all the old sun stuff and if other companies would start using the illumos distros, the world would be a better.
Thats where the sun peopke went after oracle bought sun and started pissing off the devs of sun. -

- Mon: ironing clothes
- Tue: revising laptop/phone contents, eliminating infoclutter
- Wed: tidying up online presence
- Thu: writing my book, at least one section at a time
- Fri: coding for personal projects that do/can make me money (I have three now)
- Sat: cleaning up the house, changing bedsheets
- Sun: rest1 -
Today I discovered the secrets of taking HD pictures with a phone:
1. Set to highest resolution
2. Turn on RAWs
3. Take the picture (basic photo taking tips like focus, don't point at the sun, make sure finger is not on lense)
4. Use Photoshop/Lightroom to make corrections and make it look like how you "remembered" it (aka lie) -
Midnight, monster energy, heaphones, dark techno music and an approaching deadline ... gets me into my super productive zone until the sun rises 😏
-
So anyone gonna watch the live launch of Parker solar probe.
This is the first time any satellite going to the sun(well closest to the sun).

*plugs in Sun Microsystems Type 6 keyboard*
Okay, several questions:
- Why is my Compose acting like Super?
- Why does Meta no longer exist?
- Why does Menu no longer exist?
- Why is Num Lock stuck on?
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
> Sun Microsystems Type 6
Thats better. -
I NEED HELP!
Please if I find this out my boss will let me out of the basement. A thermometer that sends a electric signal when the temp is 100. (Or any specific set temp)
I haven't seen the sun in 2 hours. HELP.4 -
The moment when the whole freacking office is bright like the sun and you need to switch to the light version rather than dark to be able to code without killing your eyes...
Feeling like a noob again :( -
I would describe the day with all the soothing sounding adjectives I could find. You don't see this perfect weather in London. The sun rays through the glass walls seem very welcoming my intention.
My plan was to enjoy a couple of cups of coffee while getting boozed in some development works. How beautiful, right?
But alas! a manual rack transfer came in for HA....163 instances

I used mint, Ubuntu,Kali but now I want to change my Linux flavour.
My work is mostly on backend development (PHP, MySQL).
Which one may I try next?
(All previous Linux are f9 for me I just want to use new distro)3 -
It was 11:30 pm, started working a small feature telling myself "This will only last 30 minutes".
Next time I looked at the time it was 7:30 am and sun was shining through my curtains. -
Today, in Temu's wild and crazy online store:
Clothing arms!
https://temu.com/at-en/...?
Me: What are these?
Temu: Wear them inside OR outside
Me: But what are they?
Temu: They come in lots of colours
Me: But what ARE they?
Temu: only 2.77
Me: What...do they keep your arms cool..or hot?
Temu: Yes!
Me: ...
Temu:...Better hurry...they're going fast...1 -
"X is dead! My project has just gone up in smoke, because docs/programs have been permanently lost."
This time, it's Sun. No one's dumped their compiler package CDs for Solaris, and now you can't order them. Whoops! There's like 5 versions of Solaris that have SDKs and docs that are just gone.
Dump your CDs, you stingy motherfuckers. "oh they're stamped, they have my name in them, i paid $600 for the license" do it anyway, because time is unrelenting and the rot claims us all. we must run faster than it does, and you're just standing still.7 -
if you feel like no coding, cuz of this super hot weather.
better meet some friends at the lake grab some beer and have fun. -
Imagine if all countries made it mandatory for their citizens to have the same haircut as their leader..2

I love it when you are initiated into a new project within 30 minutes which must be finished in 2 weeks and you have no idea of anything! In addition, there are customers who have further problems wich must also be solved immediately!
My co-workers are all already in the holidays and enjoy the sun!
I love my work...1 -
Yellow represents the lions, the kings of forests
Yellow represents the griffindors, the kings of Quidditch , kindness and bravery.
Yellow represents the Lannisters, the powerful and riches
Yellow represents the Sun, the fire of power.
Join the team Lions today, we got the muscle force here 💪3 -
There's an Indian song, "Kya kabhi ambar se surya nikalta hai, kya kabhi bin bati, deepak jalta hai"
translation : Does sun ever rises in night, does a lamp burn without light.
Guess that singer never met a met a developer, our sun rises at night, and our lamp (laptop) burns without lights : (5 -
Today I am experiencing all the joys of workspace virtualisation, with CIT that only looks at security, not what is used by the people and why... They restrict me now from doing my work... While I am sitting at home 🤭 yeah open up another ticket explaining these asshats that we need things to get our jobs done, and that they just do things to pretend to enhance security by destroying productivity
Let us walk into ragnarok with sun on our faces... Why the fuck do I even work here? -
I feel really frustrated and annoyed right now. The reason for that is that I'm in spain with my family and they take me every day to the beach to go swimming, lay down in the sun and watch old women without bra they are all like 40 - 60 years old. The worst part I didn't bring my computer with me. Well I brought my phone and my tablet but I don't like to code with them.
All I'm saying is that it's really boring and I want to be with my computer in my own nerdy environment and coding something. I want to be wierd again I don't like this normal world they are just wasting their.
It's gonna be like this till monday next week. What do I do guys, does anybody else feel the same?12 -
Yup
Happens all over the west
One fire they willfully set over and over again creates a predictable snowstorm in June by blotting out the sun causing the temperature at night to dip to freezing19 -
What are some tips for shooting and editing cell phone videos?
WTC was great but somehow send the camera app algo decided to process out the sun and a lot of colors....

It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.
I really hope all the evil in the world is done for the greater good, I'm praying that humans aren't inherently evil and that there are bigger pictures we can't see.
Nonetheless, I wish you great health. Survival is the primary goal. Stay alive, because, what a time to be alive.
Most importantly, enjoy every second of it. Fuck the status quo, do what you think is right. Do what your gut tells you. Be virtuous, even if you don't have it. Have integrity, be honest and just.
Earth and Sun are beautiful, yet we spend our lives inside fucking walls, and when it's time to go home, it's fucking dark.6 -
* music * sun is shining, the weather is good yeah, make you wanna move your dancing feet... * music *2

It's like my life is divided into two parts these days. Some days I wake up and the sun is shining and everything feels good. Other days I wake up and remember that I'm going to be working on writing unit tests all day. :/

Hello devrant,
Need guidance about QR code based coupon system.
In my restaurant I sale few food items. My 50+ customer bought food daily (on delivery). They are asking me for coupon system like I sale one sandwich for half 30 INR , they bought 3-4 per day.
So they can buy coupon of 100 sandwich on every delivery my delivery boy will scan QR code of customer and their sandwich count will decrease accordingly.
This will apply for every food item.
Can you suggest me current software for this.1 -
I had a dream that my code made me fly irl. I traveled at high speeds and noticed up and down. The whole dream theme was that of the sky when the sun makes it and the clouds turn pink. The feeling was like when u get a crush on a girl coder. I might theme a part of my game around it.
-
The fucking sun in my (home-)office burns my eyes and I see fucke nothing!
Not even with a light theme.5 -
WTF?! One thing I could count on was the Sun not exploding this year. Then I see this shit!

How does a piece just break off? I would be asking the same thing if I was in the doctors office and my dick just broke off.11 -
As the morning sun moves and shines through my window in various different angles, my chair and keyboard automatically moves with it.
Huh, strange.1 -
Trying to book a trip to the sun. Filling in personal info. -> "untranslated error message".
Trying again -> no more room for these dates.
Trying again on another computer -> the date itself does lot appear (but other dates do show up as "fully booked")
IS IT SO DIFFICULT?? WHY CAN'T YOU MAKE YOUR WEBZ WORKZ!!?!2 -
When something is still broken after I fix it
When fixing one bug creates two more bugs
When I am too lazy to do anything at all
When I have to fix bugs in code I did not write
Whether the sun is shining or not,
whether it is hot outside or cold,
I always feel the same...1 -

I really hate these light-tubes. And the people in my office prefers to switch on these god damned things regardless the sun is shining outside and there is plenty of light coming in..
-
Ancient people worshipped the sun not because they were primitive, but because solar flare destroyed AGI after the World War Final.2

see. anything they make that is good could pass for one of ours :P
" A single strand of spider's weave
Just dancing in the sun
Please don't turn around and leave
You are my only one
Compromise is made out of peace
But history's made out of violence
After the war of the worlds has ceased
All that's left is the deafening silence"
