Being paid to rewrite someone else's bad code is no joke.
I'll give the dev this, the use of gen 1,2,3 Pokemon for variable names and class names in beyond fantastic in terms of memory and childhood nostalgia. It would be even more fantastic if he spelt the names correctly, or used it to make a Pokemon game and NOT A FUCKING ACCOUNTANCY PROGRAM.
There's no correspondence in name according to type, or even number. Dev has just gone batshit, left zero comments, and now somehow Ryhorn is shitting out error codes because of errors existing in Charmeleon's asshole.
The things I do for money...26
I was cleaning my drawer yesterday and I came across a 128 MB memory stick that I kept from my first ever PC. That nostalgia hit me like a punch in the face. I went down into the store room and picked up the rest of the components and spent the entire day assembling my old PC.
It booted up and my files were all still there! It was so exciting to see AOL, Limewire, Napster. I played songs on winamp, Fired up all my games : Wolfenstein, Rise of Nations, Vice City... Browsed through my entire CD and floppy collection....
It all felt so freaking good (づ￣ ³￣)づ
I am hooked! Now I wanna restore my VHS too...13
Came home yesterday and the first thing I did is revive my old (first) laptop. Apparently this is how hard drive can be replaced - stripping down to the mother board.
Ubuntu in and damn the nostalgia!4
Here's one that involves Windows, Linux (at the same time!), WInZip, Python, Lua and Minecraft, sort of.
So, when I get depressed I often find that old 2011 Minecraft videos help a lot from the nostalgia boost. If its stupid, but it works, it isn't stupid. Anyways, I was thinking about how much fun it must have been to just fuck around with code and make something like Minecraft. Naturally, I got a huge code boner and really wanted to do something I hadn't in a while: binding c to a higher level language.
This time around, I wanted to try Python. C + Python seems like a good pair. I watched a tutorial and it seemed pretty interesting and simple enough but I remembered that I actually like Lua a lot better than Python, so I went to the download page of Lua.
The download is a tar.gz so I let out a sigh and start typing "WinZip" into google. But no, fuck that, I hate 3rd party decompression programs on Windows. They all just give me this eerie feeling.
"This would be so much fucking easier on Linux"...
I remember that I haven't tried the Windows Subsystem for Linux. I guess it's time, isn't it?
I read the docs of how to do it. Nice little touch, they tell you how to enable WSL from PowerShell but don't mention the GUI way to do it. It's genuinely a nice touch.
So I get everything installed and go to the app store to choose a distro. I want Ubuntu. I click the Install button...
... "Something unexpected happened"
Windows and their fucking useless error messages. Jesus, okay. I restart computer. Same issue. I update Windows. Same thing. Uninstall WSL. Reboot. Install WSL. Reboot. Same thing. HOLY SHIT.
Went to bed. Woke up. Tried to install Ubuntu.
"Yea ok lul i'll work this time for no reason"
Finally unzipped Lua.4
You'll be surprised, but it's Microsoft for me.
When I started out, windows(95, yes I'm old, thanks for noticing) was the shit for me and I was quite a fanboy of it.
However, when a friend of mine introduced me to Linux, I quickly changed my mind because so many small things were way better. Then, when Vista came out, I switched completely.
That, on its own, was an adventure, but that's another rant for another time(Me and my pal were the only Linux users in the town we lived in, so without online shopping, perusing the local hardware vendors was like meeting a Neolithic tribe. It's definitely rantworthy on its own, if only for nostalgia).
The more I learned about Free Software and what Corporations could do with their power, the more I came to despise the companies I used to advocate for.
Now, it's 2018 and people bitch about what Facebook, Microsoft and their equally evil buddies do. Yet, 2013, when PRISM hit the fan, they once again ran to their arms instead of fixing the problem properly. That's about when I lost the last bit of respect for people.
And now I'm sitting here playing the world's tiniest open source violin, singing "won't get fooled again" by The Who.6
Who remembers winamp? Well... We still use it in our bar once a year
Backstory: I help to organize a small openair festival once a year and to finance that we run (amongst other things) a bar once a year.
Music is still supplied by good old winamp! The nostalgia is strong.3
Can we all just have a moment of silence for BASIC...
Got caught in a YouTube spiral watching nostalgia need and never realised how big and important BASIC was when it came to home PC's (I'm 21 so have no actual experience with said PC's)...
Also that leads me to the question as to why BASIC isn't still used?
It's actually a really legible language ¯\_(ツ)_/¯8
So apparently you can now run Windows 95 from an app made in electron.
This was my first operating system. I can remember playing Pajama Sam in '96 at the tender age of 6 and teaching my parents how to use a computer. And now it's a freaking electron app that uses 200MB!! of ram. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.3
RPi 4 is hard to get your hands on it seems.
Really debating buying it though, 4 GB is enticing, but I just don't see a place for it. I have a surplus of machines which are much more powerful and accessible (Display ports - not mini HDMI)
And let's not forget the sub-2GHz clock speed. My desktop goes to 5, and my server isn't far behind. And my laptop isn't far behind that. And my other laptop isn't far behind that. But this new Pi would be far far behind that.
Not to mention the ARM architecture. There have been leaps and bounds made since the Pi first came out in terms of support for ARM (Most certainly fueled by the Android craze) but it still isn't x64, is it?
If I were 13 again and I didn't have all of the toys that I do now, I would be elated at the launch of the Pi 4. But as it stands, I don't see a use for it. Maybe nostalgia.23
I just stumbled upon a first game I ever programmed back in highschool. Oh the nostalgia and the urge to cringe. Apparently I thought programing a game in visual basic and leaving an enormus memory leak was a good idea. Well I guess you have to start somewhere.3
Lately on my Linux desktop I've been playing a lot of games that deviate pretty sharply from my customary selections: lotro, superhot, terraria, stardew valley, and civ 4.
Celeste, Hollow Knight, Mr Shifty, Owlboy, West of Loathing, the Long Dark
Dead Cells, Max Payne 2(for nostalgia), Doom(2016), Kingsway, The Sexy Brutale8
A recent post by someone else regarding dial-up made me wonder: Why did it have that specific, trademark noise when connecting?? What was the purpose of that? It's not like it was useful or anything, right?6
KolourPaint is hands down THE FUCKING BEST PAINT SOFTWARE EVER CREATED! No arguments!
It has everything a terrible artist like me can ask for:
1, Image Transparent Tool : ✓ (its magical!)
2, Drawing Tools : ✓
3, Monochrome conversion: ✓
4, Grayscale Conversion : ✓
5, Image resize : ✓
6, Touch of nostalgia : ✓
It's so good I feel like donating the hell out until I go broke! Ughhh!!!!!8
https://eelo.io looks very interesting, especially for the privacy aware.. :)
On a nostalgia note; Behind the company, it's said to be the creator of Mandrake.9
The Soviet Union was a terrible place with a lot of talent. I’m rewatching all of Shurik’s Adventures movies (Приключения Шурика) for the sake of Nostalgia. Any other Ukrainians and Russians out there who love those movies?3
Just had a random nostalgia moment:
Childhood days playing wolfenstein 3d in the telephone cable modem internet times.
I clearly remember the first cheat code i used in my entire life for that game : ILM
What was your first cheat code and the first game that comes to your mind when talking about your childhood games :)2
My first memorable exposure to computers. When my mum came home with the hypebeast rocking a counterfeit version of windows 95. Watching it boot for the first time to the orchestra that was the phone line connecting us to the internet. Ahh it truly gives me a sense of nostalgia when I think about how far we’ve really come
Who miss the old nat geo theme orchestral song? Damn the Adventurous nostalgia.
Heres a truly vitrolic and unnecessary rant:
Package control for sublime is all well and good
through the command palette, but it's just
fucking retarded. How about you point me to a
FUCKING COMMAND to actually INSTALL A
MOTHERFUCKING PACKAGE YOU
Under babel plugin while browsing packages
"Find it as Babel through Package Control."
What fucking command? How do I "Find" it?
The browse command just opens my
motherfucking browser. How do I fucking install
your fucking packages you assholes?
"Use autocomplete" except your god damn
autocomplete doesn't list "install package"
for some god damn reason because everything
web is a broken pile of utter shit, built
on a more shit, like a leaning garbage tower
of bullshit waiting for the smallest mistake to
take down the entire house of cards like
someone removing a leftpad on npm.
Maybe specify I have to enter
"install package" and THEN hit enter, and THEN
enter the GOD DAMN MOTHERFUCKING package name
on a separate god damn line for
some fucky reason.
Next time don't make a tool that breaks
motherfucking conventions. It's bad enough
every fucking look-at-me-im-smart cunt of a
dev and their dog has to invent a CLI and
then go and invent a new domain specific
language too motherfuckers.
Next tool that breaks convention around me is
gonna see the dev lit on fire.
fucking uppity cunts.
"Say thanks" the site say. I am not
feeling fucking thankful at the moment.
The least you can do if you're going to
contribute to open source, is not make things
actively fucking worse, least of all in the
FUCK count for this rant: 19 / 50,
RANK: RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC
0-5: GENTLE AS A LAMB
6-10: ANGRY GOAT
11-15: NUN WITH PMS
16-20: RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC
21-25: CANTANKEROUS VIETNAM VET
26-30: BREAKING SHIT
31-35: DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE
36-40: BIPOLAR EPISODE
41-45: DESPAIR EVENT HORIZON
46-50: BROKEN CAPSLOCK
50+ : MIDLIFE CRISIS / MASTER GRAND WIZARD
OF RANTS AND ANGRY-WORD MASTURBATION.
If you prefer to cheat, you may also include any
cursewords in general, but be warned, you'll
never know the sweet taste of victory when you
achieve the rank of master grand wizard.
Like when you were a kid, and you discovered
gameshark, and all your hopes of finishing that
one game became but a ruthlessly hollowed out
husk, somewhere where could-have-been childhood
memories and nostalgia go to die like the
graveyard of dreams
(the same place officer workers souls go).4
