I've been working on updates to a react app for a few hours today. Everything's been peachy except this shit job, this inane change demand list, my headache, my lack of quiet places to work, ... okay, so basically everything is terrible. But I've done lots of builds, and made lots of progress.
Then suddenly: my build script failed. 30 seconds after a successful build, with no (tooling) changes in between.
Reason? Incorrect version of Sass.
How? Fucking npm.
Isn't package-lock.json supposed to prevent this crap?

I had my last day today, after signing an severance package deal some weeks ago. It has been eight long years in this news media company as a sole web developer.

When I used Windows and I needed to flash a rom I had to download minimal adb and fastboot package to use adb and fastboot.
I am using Manjaro now so I thought there must be a minimal package. Searched on pacman and android-tools is already installed and it's just a 2mb package. I love linux 😁8 -

Well, I really have nothing to rant about these days 😅
What I do have is a request for feedback on a project’s video, m working on the project and will release it open source once it works decently well, and most of all, when the code doesn’t look so atrociously bad 😅😅
It is basically a C/C++ package and project manager.
It can create, build, and run projects which u make, and add library flags and include directories automatically if that library exists in its package list.
It also contains package (=library) manager which can, as of now, install, uninstall, and fetch info of any package should it exist in the package list.
I will be adding package upgrading in the future, although package list updates can be performed.
Also, right now it can only build binary projects. I’ll soon be working to enable creation of library ( static/dynamic ) projects as well.
Finally, it allows for building of packages using CMake or configure, but uses a custom format to build projects.

Why python can't into proper dependency management?
I Node.js we use npm. Modules are downloaded per project and packaging is easy.
In Java we use maven/gradle. Never been so easy to build and download libraries and package your project.
But in Python? No, it's not easy. You have to use virtualenv first so pip/anaconda won't download globally, then you must write setyp.py in a million different ways. Packaging and distribution to clients? Good luck with that.21 -
If any of you out there are forced to develop on a Windows machine and want to make it just a little more linux like, download the chocolatey package manager. It's similar to Macs brew or linux apt, yum, pacman, zypper; but for windows.
Could make you're life just that much easier2 -

Today I decided to turn an RFC5545 RRULE implementation I had made a few months back for a project in Rust into a cargo package, it would have made a fine addition to my portfolio since I was positive some people would find it useful. Turns out someone else had the same idea as me around the same time I did, but already published a package with it and, worst of all, the dude seems to have made it better than I ever could.
Welp, guess I'll just throw my code away, use his package in my project and maybe contribute a bit to it if I find any issues.

So, after day 3 of Rust programming I have an observation to make:
Rust package management (and conflicts that arise) is not very good.
To the rusters out there, am I wrong? Is there something to make it better?19 -
I just released my first NPM package that is actually functional and used in a private project (https://npmjs.com/package/@lbfalvy/...) and I have to say, the quality of debug tooling for Node is abysmal. I spent 4 hours just on Webpack's "Field browser doesn't contain a valid alias configuration" error which simply means "package not found", and then getting Rollup to output a working compiled javascript _and_ a d.ts was its own day-long ordeal.4

Today I learned:
In Java, you're supposed to compile a source file in its package one directory up, outside of its package. You can't compile the source file in its own package directory, for it will state "cannot find symbol" on files in the same package, even though they're in the correct package directory. That can be quite confusing at first.
Given the following directory structure:
|_
|_ \pkg
|_ _ Src1.java
|_ _ Src2.java (interface with static method)
and the following source:
package pkg;
public interface Src2 { static void doStuff() { ... }; } // assuming JDK8+, where static default methods are allowed
package pkg;

..being inside the pkg/ directory in the console,
this won't work:

However, go one directory up and..

Yeah, you truly start learning how the compiler works when you don't use the luxury of a IDE but rather a raw text editor and a console.1 -
Learn the hard way:
Episode 1:
Struggled 4 hours building my package. Some dependent package was failing build. Tried everything and atlast, contacted that package developer. He checked and said: "It seems it's broken. You can use v1.1 instead."
Lesson learnt: Sometimes, it's better to ask instead of banging your head and debugging things out. -
Package Installer on android needs to show something other than just the progress bar. Even a basic log like windows installers that say, "copying this, extracting this, done..." If it affects the minimalism of the interface, they could try doing what Tor browser does- swipe to see a log. It just feels heartbreaking to wait 5 long minutes for it to process on this tortoise device, and then get, "app not installed." with an OK button. :( Like, whyyyy? There should be a "THAT'S NOT OK" button.
Is there any magisk module for this? Or some other tweak?5 -
Why is installing the C/C++ compiler and build tools such a pain in the arse on windows? Just wanted to use the spacy package which uses CPython now I have to install gigabytes of shit and move some dlls and exes around just so I can install the fucking package. Spent about 3 hours yesterday trying to update ArchLinux (I wanted to update a certain package). Something to do with slow/failed mirrors timing out. Updated the mirrors in a not ideal way (https://gist.github.com/vodik/...). Then got package conflicts, of course. Then something about package cache. Then used `reflector` to update the mirrors. Then got another problem with the PGP keys. And finally, the update completed and now I can open vlc to watch the office...5

I will never fully understand why some people think command line package managers are "more complicated" than searching for and downloading software through the web browser.
I feel like the only reason why they think this is because the command line is not a user-friendly tool to them. All of my friends on Discord use Windows, and after showing them what a fantastic tool the Chocolatey package manager is, they don't want to have anything to do with it, because it involves entering commands.
I give up. If they don't want to use this amazing tool, that's their loss, not mine. I will just continue to run

I've waited for more than two weeks on acceptance on my PR, the maintainers hasn't been active and I've even notified them of my worries.. But so far no activity.

The more I use snaps on Linux, the more I feel like we came the full circle. Installable package (snap) contains a bundle of all dependencies, and installs them in an isolated system path to avoid version incompatibilities. Snaps can can have some sort of install-time configuration, and they create links to a handful of entry points rather than adding all executables to the path. In short, they do the exact same thing Windows installers have been doing for the past 30 years.18

In all fairness to macOS. To it's weird design choices, both Linux and Windows should copy way of installing most of macOS programs. Downloading and mounting .DMG file, drag & dropping the app into Applications folder and done! Life would be so much simpler with it. And yes, I know apt install/pacman -S/dpkg -i/any other package manager is quicker, but average Joe doesn't care about it!
Then again, it would create yet ANOTHER package managing method supported by two distros that no one really cares for...5 -

Spent 4 hours working with a buddy before realizing our failing code stemmed back to using sqlite3 Npm package, which is asynchronous. Switched to better-sqlite3, a synchronous sqlite package, and alls good.
What's the purpose of an async DB anyway? Seemed like it made storing and retrieving data a huge hassle. -

Please share your thoughts on Dependabot security alerts on Github, more specifically for NPM packages in package-lock.json.
In 99% of cases I've found them useless as:
- package-lock.json is in the repo, but not in the NPM package (=no value to users)
- most of the updates relate to devDependencies (=no value to users)
- it clutters the git history (and changelog if it is auto-generated) with a batch of patch updates (updated depx to .1, .2, .3) while the only important thing in the next release notes is the delta (updated depx from .1 to .3) (=no value to users)10 -

I just finally took time to look at creating symbolic links for node modules and package and package lock json files all from a boilerplate code for my frontend projects,
I saved over 15gb of disk space,
my SSD is 40gb so that's fair
now I have all my node modules for frontend projects in a separate container and node modules for backend projects in a separate container
I still havent figured out how to trim down my package.json file before pushing because there'll be some unused libraries.
for now any direct changes I make to the package and package lock json files will be reflected in the the symlinked directory and them reflect over all projects that share it

So between Linux distros like Ubuntu, Manjaro, and Fedora the only difference in the Terminal is the package manager right?
Like Ubuntu uses apt-get, Manjaro uses pacman and I think Fedora uses yum (that’s what I’ve been told I could be wrong) but other than that is there any other big difference in the terminal?17 -
Say what you want about npm and node_modules, it is much better than other package management systems like pip.
Least I don't need to create an entirely new installation of nodejs every time I want to build something new that might depend on some packages that depends on an 0.0.1 version lower of another package that is used by a different project I currently have to also maintain.
P.s. I do love python overall and it's ecosystem, the package management and version control are sheer garbage.2 -
why can't apple even provide a consistent interface to load swift package? "add package dependency" interface allows you to add remote package, but doesn't allow you add local in development swift package. to do that, you will have to "drag and drop"... why can't apple just add a button on the same interface for navigate local package? is this suppose to be some hidden up up down down left right left right konami secret thing?

After switching distros ~ every 6 months for years, I came to the conclusion that one of the main factors to decide if I like it or not is its package manager..
Not saying that some are better or worse than others, just that i have my preferences..
How important is the package manager to you guys, do you even use it via terminal or are you using a GUI (in which case it doesn’t really matter, does it?..)

This "binaryextensions" NPM package is a fraud (not to be confused with "binary-extensions"!): https://npmjs.com/package/...; it contains a single JSON array of purportedly "all binary extensions", reaches 700k downloads a week, yet only lists 13 binary extensions (https://github.com/bevry/...).
This is a huge danger to security, especially if it's being used in production environments for input checking. For comparison, here is a much more robust version of a repo with the same goal (https://github.com/sindresorhus/...)1 -

I have a bootstrap theme and a package with angular components. The angular components package is the main feature of the library.
My proposals:

You know. In debian, albeit it didn't work great last time I used this tool, you could build source directly into a debian package, which included the source package.
Now this was not an easy wonderful thing. But in theory it made sense, and then if you needed to add something that would alter existing configuration etc, you could add these seperately or manually..
That I know, no such thing for rpms.
But thats not what annoys me.

Alright lads and lasses, I need a charting library!
I've narrowed it down to the following popular libraries:
- victory
- recharts
- nivo
- react-vis
I think I'm leaning towards victory and recharts since they are d3 based... because <3 SVG
Even more so victory since they have a near identical React Native package...
Would love to hear any battle stories from the front lines and experience using any of these libraries, or even a completely different one I may have missed!

Added vapor core swift package to my project so that I can use some of the extensions, had to `rm -rf ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData/` to make xcode realise the repo is actually exist.
Then I set the Core package as dependency of one of the targets, XCode complaints "unknown package Core", ok fine then I remove Core dependency, Core complaints "dependency Core is not used by any target".
How can xcode comes to this contradicting conclusion is out of my imagination, it just never gonna be happy about however i write.1 -

TIL that Debian package names are not allowed to have underscores in their names. Toast my tomatoes. As if file name conventions, like discouraging colons, would not be enough, you just added another useless bit of entropy to all the clusterfuck information just because you established a naming scheme yourself where you delimited the versions and date with an underscore from the package name.2

Here I am, trying to just simply install a package. Oops! The version of x you are running is not compatible with y. *fixes it and runs it again* Oops! The version of y you are running has dropped support for z.
How about! You just! Let me! Code! And stop! Making me waste time! On project scaffolding! For each! And every! Framework! Library! Or whatever!

Which method do you prefer: installing softwares via apt-get install or .deb packages?
My colleague disagreed with me when I choose apt-get install over downloading the .deb package. Later on it turned out the package on the ppa was outdated and didn't include systemd init scripts. I purged the package and installed the .deb provided in its website.
Worked like charm.

So I've been working on a python package for quite sometime. It is a package that allows for multithreaded/multiprocessed downloads and various control commands as well. It is not complete but can be used successfully in scripts barring some exceptions.
I was hoping that the kind people here at devrant would help me better the package and contribute towards it as well. It is also a great opportunity for newbies as well to learn and develop new insight about the package.
