I'm on the 2nd week of a support rotation. One of the support reps contacted my manager about two tickets, one that is about an automated e-mail that didn't go out (which .. doesn't even seem necessary since the action has been completed?) and one because I accidentally put in the postcode on the 2nd line of an address field (which I immediately fixed when he commented on the ticket, minutes after, the same fucking day!)
We also had a super cringe all hands meeting today. I got plenty of sleep and am already exhausted.
My old roommate/landlord/co-worker sent me a text about his company needing devops people. I should probably finish updating me resume today. -
Client: We're already behind schedule and over estimate
Also client: *keeps asking for more changes*
Why are civilians like this11 -
Well, my boss is officially unhinged.
He threatened me in a call. He thinks I ratted him out to HR for living over seas. Funny thing is I don't give a rats ass, he's got the wrong guy.
Going to HR now though, see if I can move teams to minimize the damage he can afflict on me.11 -
I got some old piece of shit computer from my cousins, they wanted me to retrieve the old pics on it so I did and now I don't know what to do with it.
I spent the day cleaning years of nasty ass dust off of it and wiped the whole case clean + new thermal paste.
Then I was like why tf am I doing all of this effort, this piece of crap has a single core pentium cpu with a whopping 512 MB of Ram and an 80 GB HDD with the worst cpu cooler mounting systems I have ever seen.
I was thinking of installing something like antix linux with pihole on it but the logical thing to do should be to just get a raspberry pi with has a much smaller form factor, performance and is a lot quieter so idk..7 -
One of my minions (erm, I mean, "a valued junior member of my team") asked to be assigned to tasks more "data science related".
Regardless of the very last-decade sounding request, I tried to explain to the Jr that there is more to "data science" than distilling custom llms and downloading pytorch models. There are several entire fields of study. And those are all sciences. In this context, science equals math.
But they said they were not scared of math.
I've seen them using their phones to calculate freaking tips. If you can't do 15% of a lunch bill in your head, hypothesis tests might be a bit more than challenging.
But, ok then. Here we go.
So I had them do some semi-supervisioned clustering. On a database as raw as dirt, but with barely 5Gb, few dimensions and regarding subjects with easily available experts.
Even better, we had hundreds of manually classified training and test cases.
The Jr came back a month later with some convoluted mess of convoluted networks; just the serialized weights of the poor thing were about as large as the database itself.
And when I tried it on some other manually classified test datasets... Freaking 41% error rate, for something that should be a slam dunk. Little better than a coin toss.
One month of their time wasted on an overfitted unusable mess.
I had to re-assign the task to someone else, more experienced, last friday. It was monday when they came up with an iterative KNN approach giving error rates for several values of K... some of them with less than 15% error on the test dataset.
WTF are schools teaching and calling "data science" nowadays?!?!?
I reeeeally need to watch those juniors more closely. Maybe ask for middle-sprint demonstrations. But those are soooo boring and waste so much time from people who know what they are doing...
Does anyone have a better idea to prevent this type of off-track deviation? Without being a total bore, that is.
And... should I start asking people "gotcha" data analysis questions before giving them free reign on this type of tasks? Or is it an asshole boss move? I would hate someone giving me a pop quizz before letting me work... But I got no other ideas.3 -
When the inventor of CSS said "Damn I have this great idea..!" somebody should have told him to chill and tell him "no worries, someone else will do, too."6

There are too much Japanese on this site. There is such thing as too diverse. The Japanese on this site do not respect our wholesome dev culture.195

Years ago, I joined a company making games for handheld consoles.
Because a game's audio needs to be tested, too, I connected earphones to the console so that:
0. I wouldn't bother others w/ the sounds coming out of the console.
/* !Everyone wants to hear that crap. */
1. I could hear the sounds better.
PM: * Enters the room. *
Me: * Focused on testing the game. *
PM: * Walks up to me from the side, starts talking. *
Me: * Focused on testing the game. *
PM: * After approx. 30 seconds of complete lack of response from me, kind of irritated, knocks on my desk to get my attention. *
Me: * Take out the earphones. *
Oh, hi, how can I help you?
PM: Haven't you heard a word I said?
Me: Well, no. I am testing the game, including the audio.
PM: You need to pay attention to what's going on around you.
Me: Testing audio is one of my responsibilities. I am using earphones because of the reasons [0-1].
PM: Even still, you just need to pay attention to what's going on around you.
PM: * Finally explains the reason for him bothering me, then goes back to his lair. *
Moral of the story: Fuck being good at what you do && knowing your responsibilities.
When PM wants something from you, you better give him the attention he wants.
/* The expectation being I grow an extra pair of eyes && ears, so that I see the guy coming && am prepared to listen to him whenever he wants something _while_ doing the best job I possibly can. */13 -
Does anyone else ever drink too strong coffee in one go because they're tired only to get a headache and still feel 10 years younger16
-
There was a project discussed and the agreed deadline was 4 months. And the next morning we got an email that we need to deliver that in a week with absolutely no change in requirements.5

Our PM wanted us to do a massive refactor of our Codebase. He gave it 1 Story Point ( or in his words :"Small T-Shirt size") since it was just a refactor, what could Go wrong ?
Answer: Everything . WE needed 2 Months to get Everything up to standart (how he saw it) and 2 of the programmers just quit because they were getting yelled at for Not refactoring fast enough9 -
Got yelled at because super important feature for a client was two days overdue.
The kicker is that they never even talked to IT about the feature let alone give us a decent spec/assignment.
So I guess my most unrealistic deadline was the day before yesterday...2 -
Potential client once asked for a clone of Amazon, for $5000, in one month. I did not take the project.10

Migrate and entire fucking ERP system in NINE DAYS.
"It's just copy and paste!"
Yeah, if both systems worked exactly the same. And if they do, why switch?5 -
My CTO told the COO and CEO i'd be finished SOC2 compliance by the end of December... On December 14th.
It takes 3 months to do the audit, let alone all the actual work. I hadn't even started yet.
He was fired shortly after that.7 -
Have you ever started a new job and they have a bunch of legacy and technical debt so much that it doesn’t even makes sense trying to fix anything4

Windows XP was just right. A perfect balance of performance and functionality.
Everything less complex feels too impractical, everything more complex feels too uncontrollable.
When using XP, I was confident I could get the job done, yet I knew what every process in the task manager did. It’s not the case with 7, let alone 10/11. I don’t know what happens under the hood there at all. Maybe custom Linux distros qualify too, but they’re unapproachable by laypeople. You have to be a geek to use them effectively.
Windows XP struck just the right balance between functionality, simplicity and compatibility. Too bad the era is gone in favor of opaque surveillance.8 -
The other day when my family and I went to the beach, I met an old friend whom I hadn't seen since 2013. We hardly recognised each other. He brought to my attention that my hair had turned grey! 😮 I was imagining it was still black, but at a closer look it's more like salt & pepper or even beyond... 🤨 I thought I was immune to aging. Hence, the update of my profile avatar, to give an honest picture of my present appearance.2

Mount an azure file share in an app service container? Sounds handy. Nice clicky-draggy wizard to set it up, pick your file share, type a path to mount it to, hit save.
And does it work?
Does it buggery.
And is there a helpful error message so you can see what you've done wrong?
In a pig's arse is there a helpful fucking error message.
"Application error", and a link to some "diagnostic resources" that displays the exact same error message, including the same link, so a link to itself, in an infinite recursive loop of rank, inhuman stupidity.
Let me see what's in the logs. Absolutely fuck all. No, wait! There's the html markup for the fucking useless error message I'm looking at in the browser. So the UI is telling me to fuck off, and the logs are recording that I have been told to fuck off.
But this is Azure. So there isn't just one place to look at the logs, there are many places to look at the logs. And they are all geologically slow and most of them don't work.
It's probably a firewall issue. I'll have a look later on if I can be arsed, but frankly I'd rather be performing cunnilingus on a lion.1 -
Between me and my wife, we pull in 300k CAD a year, but we're still middle class. We should be fucking ballers living in a mansion, but I'm still budgeting at the grocery store.
I can afford to keep my house up, raise a family, and have 1 nice vacation a year. I guess it's fucked to complain since others are struggling to eat.
Still it seems crazy.13 -
At this point, even tho it won’t work out, I’m thankful for getting huge crushes, it is a truly unmatched feeling 😌 and it makes me realize I have emotions. Yayyy1

i'm happy to share with you, skyRant, a devRant client is now available in the playstore.
the real devRant app may have been removed from app stores. But devRant will never die!

Also, holy FUCKING SHIT. DEPLOYING A KUBERNETES CLUSTER JENKINS AND SONARQUBE EC2s, TAKES SO MUCH FUCKING RESOURCES AND COSTS SO FUCKING MUCH THAT THIS HURTS ME FUCKING PHYSICALLY.
HOW DO I PRACTICE WORKING DEVOPS WITH KUBERNETES ON AWS IF THE COSTS ARE FUCKING OUTRAGEOUS?????7 -
So about quitting my job... it didn't quite go as planned. My boss really wants me to stay and I might be looking at a deal that I wouldn't get anywhere else and an opportunity I feel I must explore.
(It's not about money, but I don't want to share details before it's settled.)12
