Best part of being a dev?
The perceived ability to fix ANY electronic device owned by friends and family.
"So you work with computers? Any idea what's wrong with my toaster?"7 -
I left uni in 2005 clutching my shiny new .NET based degree, and was instantly hired by a local software firm... to maintain their legacy Turbo Pascal systems.2
-
I spent an entire week debugging my JS Gameboy emulator an year ago.
(The "C" register was read-only for some reason)
Turns out I typed "с" (cyrillic) instead of "c".4 -
There was an error in one of my Java file. Impossible to find it. I commented all the code and the error remain. I commented the import of that class and no more error. How the f**** is possible that a empty class give an error ?
I opened the file in another text editor and found out that the last character was a symbol that wasn't recognize or display in other text editor.
I was really proud (and confused)3 -
That pure rage when you're off work for a few days, and return to find that someone has been in one of your magnificently neat code files, and taken a syntactic shit! Loads of unnecessary whitespace, tabs all over the place, and copy/pasted comments that have nothing to do with the code! 😫1

Just investigating a bug reported by QA. Spoke to the dev responsible for the code, and asked why they'd called a particular function. Their reply:
"Well the function name sounded right. I didn't check what it actually did" -
Woke myself up shouting hdcp at 4:40 am today!!!
I was explaining what hdcp was to my sister in the dream, why the HDMI cable wouldn't work..
Had a chuckle and continued to sleep, realizing what a nerd I am 😆
Who dreams about hdcp and hdmi cables?4 -
Now my facebook messenger app does it's updates inside the app without my consent to install an apk.
I'm scared6 -
I'm surprised how after using gulp task with minify js, css, html, smoosh and compress to gz file the whole web size down from 200kb to 20kb.
That let me think what a shit web developer I'm and what cool are those things.1 -
When the PO asks for a last second code change right before the sprint review, and now it's your turn to demo1
-
My password manager!!
I use passwords I can never remember, stay logged in, next time I need to log_in I use the passqord forgotten button, reset it with my e-mail or better phone2 -
Didn't install linux for years now. Today, I have to and nothing changed about wifi drivers, at all ! Even the install process still sucks !
And they still ask to "sudo apt-get install fucking-wifi-driver" ?!?!?!
I don't have internet yet, that's the all point, damn it !22 -
I hate python.
Who thought that creating a language that doesn't provide any backwards compatibility whatsoever without a way of managing versions is a good idea?20 -
Spend hours debugging a python script because tests fail. Turns out ftp (the unix binary) adds CR bytes to every byte in a .gz file that looks like a LF on upload (in test setup). Client and server are both linux. 😭
Yes i know switch to binary mode (that fixed it - why not default??). But still WHY CR? Didn't ask for it. No windows in sight.1 -
I recently managed to accidentally delete the entirety of a personal C++ project on which had been working for a couple of days; after attempting to create an archive without tarballing the folder, I noticed that the files had been compressed individually, which was not the desired output. After running <code>rm *.gz</code>, I realised that I had forgotten to specify that the original files should be kept; as a result of this, I had accidentally deleted every project file. Instead of kicking the shit out of my table and forcing myself to spend money on new equipment, I understood that this was entirely my fault and could be prevented in the future. Luckily, I managed to recreate the entirety of the project in less than an hour, and it runs nicely.
_Remember to make back-ups._
On a different note, as if to prove that the majority of recent software is worthless, the recent Firefox update runs like AIDS on my machine (i5-2520M + 8GB DDR4). Fix your shit, Mozilla. This is inexcusable.4 -
android development is shitty af, it will make you super zombie computer nerd that sit on his chair for fking several hours just to find the where the fk is null pointer exception is coming from not only this but for all kind of errors, logcat looks like someone just hacking nasa, you know what im the one who is shitty af i would have opt web dev instead of android dev , this retarded studio and emulator takes too much time to just load a simple fking thing & if i make some change in it i've to install that application again ,it's so pathetic and horse shit thing i've ever encountered , kotlin is fun it's actually great language most of the features are so helpful in it,but the google codelabs,it's all documentation , adding dependencies whole concepts are trash imo, why can't we install the dependencies using terminal what's problem in that ,but no they chose the hard way for no fuking reason, i've successfully wasted a year learning this shitty tech stack, hopefully this NY i will choose different stack , will work till ass off .gonna build some cool projects and will eventually try for internships and all. done with android dev, idk how senior dev's are alive in this field6

Chances of getting all the bugs fixed before the demo...
"What do you think Abdul? Can you give me a number crunch real quick?"1 -
my old game had this flow every time a client places an object:
Client A creates a new generic object, and attaches texture paths (yep, global paths are allowed), and... lua code as strings to it.
Client A sends the entire object list to the server
Server receives it, replaces it's own object list
Server copies the entire object list and sends it to all clients
Client A and Client B both receive the object list and replace their versions.
All clients see that the object contains some code as strings
They compile and store it, and then run every frame. UNSANDBOXED.
any client could make all other ones execute any code and i was proud of my idea! -
how to propose your nerd gf here we go...
"you may look attractive like frontend but you need my support like backend and together we can become full stack developer we can create beautiful projects6 -
Colleague from a remote office emails me to ask what version of some tooling is installed on a build machine. Generally I wouldn't mind, but for the fact they're literally sat next to said build machine in the remote office. I mean... why get up and look yourself, when you can just IM somebody to look for you... right?

Hey!! I have made an app for curbing smartphone addiction, In this app, I am just asking user to set timer for an app, and then my app will remind them to stop using those apps! I am also showing weekly/daily usage statistics. So, what should I name my app?2

Any of you guys know about Feathers UI ? Based on Google Trends, I'll assume that you don't. But if you do please let me know

I'm using Fedora 25/ pre-release, and It's rock solid except for wifi hotspot and I don't need it.
Now my school gave me a Windows 10 pro key, and I'm hesitant.
Should I install it ?
Will I need it ?5
