There WAS a time, when I was small, I made a Minecraft server , and asked my friends to join my server at 127.0.0.113
-
There is. My latest creation. A 8bit microcontroler made in minecraft.
Features:
(1.0 version without control room)
-8bit full adder + overflow flag
-8x8bit RAM
-16x8(4bit instruction, 4bit address)
program memory
-64 possible microinstructions (16 instructions with 4 step each)
-uncondintional and if oveflow jumps
(place determined using address written with instruction)
-1/3Hz clock speed 😨
New working version (2.0) has 1Hz clock and new faster instruction decoder.
In 3.0 in addition to that useless bus was replaced with 16x8bit "hardware" stack that can store adresses and data. The clock is going to be yeeted out because it is unnecesary #clocklessisbetter (WIP tho)
Might add more documentation and post it as learning model for CS wanabees 🤔. What do you think?
Picture: Old working version 1.0
(the only one with fancy diagram)
Newer version screenshots in comments.34 -
I just got a mail from a software company in Denmark that they wanted to hire, because they "analyzed my open source GitHub contributions" and they think I'd be a good Backend Engineer using Java.
What they don't seem to realise is that the only thing I use GitHub for is college projects and 2 Minecraft mods, that I'm only 17 years old and not really in a position to move from the Netherlands to Denmark...13 -
Job Interview for System Administrator
"Do you habe Experience With Servers?"
"Yes, Minecraft Servers, I own one..."
I didn't get the job14 -
So after many hours of trail and error I've managed to make a devRant client for ComputerCraft computers in Minecraft. :D
Thanks for hosting the server @ParkCity,
Also, I'll probably upload the source to GitHub some time soon.34 -
I AM SO FUCKING HAPPY!
Just had an interview and it went fucking awesome!
At some point we just talked about games like Cyberpunk and Minecraft with the developers.
Can't wait to work there!17 -

A few years back, when my youngest cousin was about 7 years old, she asked me the most innocent question ever.
She said, "what's the internet?"
I answered, "it is where you can find anything that came from other people".
"Wanna see baby tigers?" I added then she nodded.
I Google searched 'tiger cubs' and showed the image results to her. She beamed a very big smile and said "let's look for another one!" So we did search for a few animal photos and I saw how happy she was!
Now she's a gamer who loves minecraft, Pewdiepie, and FPS games! :)9 -
My boss pissed me off so much yesterday I totally ditched work today. I had some spiced rum for breakfast (and dinner) and spent the day playing minecraft and browsing Black Friday specials.
I did a little bit of work that (oversimplified) involved paying a Clover contractor for doing basically nothing. Totes cool with that as the guy is really nice and a decent dev. Annoyingly, though, he started hitting on me and asked me out on a date at the end of the call. He's like 65 and has a daughter (grand daughter?) my age, so that's like totally creepy. Ugh.
Getting hit on by random old men is still better than talking to Mr. Asshole the Sales Fetishizer, though.11 -
I think the coolest project I did was a few years ago, it was actually a Minecraft plugin.
I decided to learn Java for Minecraft, and a few months after I started learning Java, I was approached by someone who'd like to work with me to create this full-blown Gun Game style gamemode for Minecraft. I made it clear I didn't have the most knowledge, but I was willing to learn.
We began working on the project, the projects main class was bigger than any project I had worked on. Within a few months, it became one of the more popular plugins out there, even though we were still in an alpha mode. Had nearly 1,000 servers running the plugin, over 10k+ players total testing out the plugin.
Cause of this project, I learnt how to properly organize my code, how to make it efficient, learnt how to network, learned how to properly secure and verify anything being sent by the client, working with dependencies, adding features that can support a bunch of other plugins that other developers had, and a bunch more.
Sadly we couldn't finish the plugin anymore, so we gave someone else the source code who has kept it updated to this day. (I know I didn't provide much insight into what I'm saying and just gave a general overview, got a killer headache.)2 -
Interesting thing I did yesterday:
This is a program which loops over every word in the wamerican word database and checks if the username is available on the Mojang servers, thus, this is a Minecraft OG username finder, and it works beautifully.
I'm checking 72,000 words, the only thing is I can only check one per second, so the entire process takes about 20 hours. Any usernames which are available are sent into a text file for later viewing, and it remembers which word it looked at last if you can't have your computer on for 20 hours straight.
Very happy! Found quite a few good names so far!14 -
Stepmom told me I take up the most bandwidth in the house because I have 3 monitors. ATT guy said the problem was I forwarded a Minecraft port on our router. Am I the only person who knows anything about routers?!4

Brought two laptops: Linux and windows
Forgot charger for windows.
Graphics not working properly in linux
Three hours of package installation, documentation diving, package removal, driver fuckery and other assorted fun
I can now play Minecraft.4 -

This is from my days of running a rather large (for its time) Minecraft server. A few of our best admins were given access to the server console. For extra security, we also had a second login stage in-game using a command (in case their accounts were compromised). We even had a fairly strict password strength policy.
But all of that was defeated by a slightly too stiff SHIFT key. See, in-game commands were typed in chat, prefixed with a slash -- SHIFT+7 on German-ish keyboards. And so, when logging in, one of our head admins didn't realize his SHIFT key didn't register and proudly broadcast to the server "[Admin] username: 7login hisPasswordHere".
This was immediately noticed by the owner of a 'rival' server who was trying to copy some cool thing that we had. He jumped onto the console that he found in an nmap scan a week prior (a scan that I detected and he denied), promoted himself to admin and proceeded to wreak havoc.
I got a call, 10-ish minutes later, that "everything was literally on fire". I immediately rolled everything back (half-hourly backups ftw) and killed the console just in case.
The best part was the Skype call with that admin that followed. I wasn't too angry, but I did want him to suffer a little, so I didn't immediately tell him that we had good backups. He thought he'd brought the downfall of our server. I'm pretty sure he cried.5 -
My first dev job was to code a minecraft plugin that was so simple but I made it sound super hard. The guy who bought it from me thought I was some professinal plugin maker so he paid me 100 swedish kronor for a plugin he could get for free ☺️9

Little Jakob finds out you can open a js in (mobile) text editor.
Little Jakob finds an nether mod for early Minecraft PE editions (0.7 @ that time or so).
Little Jakob changes some number and vars and creates an Aether mod. (works the same like nether but other blocks&tools).
Little Jakob publishes it with screenshots in a video, gets 30.000+ views on youtube, mod reviews etc. There hasn't been an Aether mod before.
Little jakob feels badass.
2 years later I revited the video - and found out that the mod was licensed and I did something "illegal".
Seeked the internet and apologized to the original author (who was aware of this copy mod) - felt bad, he forgave me.1 -
I hate windows. Today I opened nvidia geforce experience and in the list of my games at the end there was a new game: "Minecraft: windows 10 edition", WTF???, I never installed it! Like always a google search saved me: After last updates windows will install suggested apps WITHOUT your permission. And to disable this you must edit a key in regedit. Not even a switch in system settings! Microsoft wtf are you doing?47

I really love to share my knowledge and I have a opportunity to teach kids coding as a lector. I even switched my f-ing theme to light for them so they can see the board (they're already saying light theme sucks, I love them). Maybe it's only html/css but they're learning so fast even though they're just bunch of 12-13yo Minecraft kids 😂 I'm myself only 17 but I can see the "age gap" between us, I'm getting old...11

Ok so I started doing Minecraft development because why not and it's super easy to jack the prices up on projects...
THEESE COMMUNITIES ARE SO TOXIC!! I have worked on ~ 13 servers in the past month and have built myself a pretty good reputation. Recently I was hired by a network who wanted a few plugins made and I agreed. There were two owners, one who was paying me and had already paid me and paid for everything and another who is a very popular YouTuber and streamer (~100k subs). Both owners were in a disagreement and the one who was paying for everything including my second paycheck which I thankfully recieved requested that I erased the server so the YouTuber couldn't steal the server files.
I hesitantly copied the files and sent them to the person paying me. The YouTuber then got furious and blamed the server not working out on me and now I have a bunch of 8 year old fan boys destroying my rep. I swear to god I'm going to destroy this kids YouTube channel if it's the last thing I do.10 -

Just a common day.
I received a message on Telegram, a guy wanted a Minecraft plugin for his server.
It was a small plugin, he accepted my first offer of 15€.
After some hours, it was complete. I was pressing "Export" on my IntelliJ but a terrifying message arrived.
"Dude I forgot to say that, can you make it using C++? I heard EXEs are faster".
Fuck dumb clients especially Minecraft server owners!7 -
So, a rather unfortunate bug on the Minecraft website.
Minecraft allows you to change your name every 30 days. I was reverse engineering their API so I could use it personally.
On the username change form there are two fields: your desired username, and your password.
To protect myself from actually changing my name, I purposefully put in password123 so that it would fail. Then, I clicked "Change name" to monitor the network traffic.
Well that's when two unfortunate things combined.
#1: I used my last name to test. It's a unique word that is relatively short and very easy for me to type out of habit.
#2: That password field doesn't actually get validated.
So imagine my shock when I clicked "change username" and it WORKED.
And now my username is doxxing me for at least 30 days + the permanent name history
FUCK me6 -
Welp, I just created a Minecraft server on a 48-Core Epyc with 256GB of RAM.

I bought Minecraft back in 2007 or 8. It was $20 and gave me access to Minecraft forever, all updates included.
Today Microsoft closed all the old mojang accounts and I no longer have access to Minecraft. I could have migrated to a Microsoft account, but it will be a cold day in hell if I ever open one of those.
Sounds like law suit material. Class action anyone?12 -
Sad to abort a nice Minecraft session with fellow devranters in order to drive to work... Hopefully I am back before 4AM.18

Minecrafters, come here :)
So, as I wrote before, I'm working on a custom minigame network called Silverfern, I've planned the grand opening for the 1st of February, which is my birthday. Now, the minigame base and 1 fast minigame is ready, the only real thing we have to finish is the punish system (ban/mutes) and a quick anticheat. I need to finish them before the grand opening, I hope I'll be fast and code good enough.
I've started working on it 1.5 years ago, I hope we can see on the server on February the 1st!11 -

Closing the minecraft server for a little while!
I'll be adding mods, writing up a perms file, and hosting the pack on git! I'll post a rant with the repo link.
One of our lovely ranters offered a VM to host the server on, so the ip is probably gonna change as well! (i also gotta make an arch bootable USB, and running the server would slow that down lol)
i'll notify you all once it's donevia a rant, like i said. until then, formulate plans, and suggest some developer-related mods for me to add in! (must be 1.7.10)
Currently planned mods are:
- ComputerCraft
- Applied Energistics
- Buildcraft
- Project Red
and a few from whatever you guys suggest. see you then!

For the love of god, I spent 2,5 hours debugging why Minecraft from the windows store doesn't work...
The game just shows a red message telling you it didn't work.
I checked the logs, nothing just warnings
I re-installed the game, nothing, same error
Updated java and all parts of the store, nothing....
Obviously I had to install Something called the "xbox identity Provider"... You know... On a PC... For a distinctly PC game to work... Installed by the store... And the provider is also on the store... But it doesn't auto-install with the game
Ever since you migrated to the Microsoft Auth the login experience is awful (I ranted about that already)
How about you do the bare fucking Minimum of an User experience and Install the fucking dependencies when I re-installed something your fucking store??!!!
The fucking bare minimum that every package manager ever created fucking has as a basic requirement?! Are you kidding me?
Rename your fucking services so they make sense and please don't waste everyone's time by having both shitty logs and no dep management for your own apps... Fucks sake12 -
So I had to buy a laptop
I had a Lenovo G50-70 (2014) it was really good, mid-range i5, 6GB of RAM and to speed it up I've installed an SSD. 3 years (and some formatting) later it started being slow, I couldn't even play Minecraft anymore (and the battery was dying)
This year we're learning and using PCs for the first (real) time, so I needed a good laptop.
I started searching everywhere, Google, shops, Amazon... (Excluding HP and Acers for good reasons 😂) so I've found this Asus, which isn't really famous, but the model is UX510UX.
FHD display, Nvidia 950M, i7-7500U, really good battery, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of hard disk
I bought an additional 128GB M.2 SSD from WD (I'm sorry but I can't live with a HDD 😂)
All of this for ~700€
I'm very happy for the purchase, the laptop is all metal (pinky bronze, but I like it)
It's really powerful, I can play GTA with mid-high details without any lag. (Remember, I play GTA on the desktop with a 1080 Ti so my standards are high)
I'm happy 😄!22 -
For all the hate going around about microsoft i just wanted to list things microsoft has done a great job at (imo of course):

Day #01 of my brother's switch to Linux:
So far so good, he's really happy with the Linux (surprisingly). The Witcher 3, Payday 2, Minecraft run flawlessly, although I had to make some small configurations in disk mounting, because of the fact that the games disk is still in NTFS file system4 -
Not a coworker, but this guy who I went to uni with and was a real life saver when I was really down. (we played minecraft together)
... So, he is a real genius. One of those guys who I legit couldn't keep up with. His brain works, he doesn't bullshit his way through, he's not pretentious, he is legit a down to earth rare genius. Yet, he doesn't use his talents enough, he likes to work or go home to play minecraft. And he doesn't politically care enough, so I am almost sure that he will end up getting stuck in the defence force.
We're still friends. And I try my hardest to not be nosy and nag at him that he can do better. I mean, he is happy the way he is, and he is not ambitious. But the memory of him is a reminder that not everyone who gets somewhere is the best and brightest.34 -
Now I have to register on oracle website with a my company name and work phone before i can download jre or jdk. That's it boys and girls. You're unemployed? No minecraft for you!20

To people who have done tech support:
Shoot me. Do you know what it is like to teach kids to use a mouse? Or even type in a keyboard? They don’t even know how to double click. Gotta call google chrome the circle of colors for them to understand. Some think the video that is giving the instructions is actually them doing it. So when it ends they are like alright done.
FYI: working in an internship currently where we teach kindergarten up until 5th graders from scratch to Minecraft modding. Btw it is an unpaid internship.10 -

My 11 years-old brother seems to be addicted to Minecraft, not the "dis iz so kool" addiction, but the "I put my health and education in danger to keep playing this game (homeworks badly done, grades free falling, showers without soap in 30s flat, food eaten in 15s, starts to yell at parents when they want him to stop playing (parents bitch slapped him a few times for this, but he seems to persist)).
My parents are over 55 now, so they don't really know how to handle this (can't / don't want to blame them), and I'm supposed shove some reason in his dead brain next weekend (I live 150km away).
I've been addicted myself to videogames in general and WoW in particular ((almost) no regrets) a few years back.. what should I say to him else than "This shit will ruin your life even before you started it" (which is planned anyway) ?26 -
There is no technical reason why Microsoft should buy Github, no!
It's the same reason why they bought Skype, LinkedIn and Minecraft and everything else: Money and monopolisation.
That's destructive and an obstacle to progress.
Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebook: Go fuck yourself!3 -
Basically: Shoutout to my dad!
My dad's not an engineer or anything. But he likes building PCs and has a bunch of tech at home.
Well, thanks to him, I had a PC very early on, and of course, I did the typical skiddie stuff it, aka "fake batch virus haha funny" and playing Minecraft.
Well, at some point, after tinkering with mods to enhance the quality of gameplay, I found the ultimate mod: Macro / Keybind Mod.
This mod allows you to bind stuff to keybinds, such as commands or chat messages, or... Macros.
This mod has a custom macro language. (Hint: This is where the fun begins)
Another mod I used was AutoSwitch. However, that mod required a "core mod" (aka library installed in a dumb way). I thought, "why do I install 2 mods to get 1 thing? dumb", and made an ugly macro with lots of nested if-elses, which perfectly emulated AutoSwitch behavior for the Minecraft version I was on.
Yup, I basically got rid of 2 jar files in my mods folder by making my own ugly macro.
The fact that I recreated something in an obscure language, having not even coded any program before, made me grow interest into actual programming languages.3 -
Installed the beefiest shaders I could find on Minecraft and combined them with my favorite texture pack. Logged into SkyBlock on Hypixel and it was pretty good looking.21

Earlier this day (or yesterday, timezones 'n stuff) I posted a "rant" about my new Project:
"The Spigot Web Framework" - a Tool that should help Owners of Minecraftservers without dedicated Webserver and knowledge about developing a website.
In the Screenshot below I show you guys, how few lines of code can make a beautiful website.
The Modulemanager is fully done and people can build their own Modules, which can be live updated.
I am currently working on "cross communication" between the Client and the Modules.
I hope you guys stay tuned!
EDIT: As mentioned in my last rant (look @comments) I will be able to pull off a standalone version of this software.18 -
Just installed linux (Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS x64) because windows update was being a cunt, instantly, it all fell into place and I got it fully running with minecraft (using generic driver, but it actually works pretty well, don't worry I will get the proper one tomorrow) and a desktop icon for it within two hours compare to windows (update) taking 4 days to do barely any updates, not accepting java or graphics drivers, which it requires because fuck opengl with the default drivers.
Fuck windows. Hooray for linux!
Now back to programming...
Thanks for putting up with me but I just need to vent because I felt like I couldn't program (and I didn't) because of FUCKING DOOLALY WINDOWS 8!
Btw thanks to the local charity shop for introducing me to (SUSE) linux when I was like 11, giving me a hope in hell of using linux. Here's one that involves Windows, Linux (at the same time!), WInZip, Python, Lua and Minecraft, sort of.
So, when I get depressed I often find that old 2011 Minecraft videos help a lot from the nostalgia boost. If its stupid, but it works, it isn't stupid. Anyways, I was thinking about how much fun it must have been to just fuck around with code and make something like Minecraft. Naturally, I got a huge code boner and really wanted to do something I hadn't in a while: binding c to a higher level language.
This time around, I wanted to try Python. C + Python seems like a good pair. I watched a tutorial and it seemed pretty interesting and simple enough but I remembered that I actually like Lua a lot better than Python, so I went to the download page of Lua.
The download is a tar.gz so I let out a sigh and start typing "WinZip" into google. But no, fuck that, I hate 3rd party decompression programs on Windows. They all just give me this eerie feeling.
"This would be so much fucking easier on Linux"...
I remember that I haven't tried the Windows Subsystem for Linux. I guess it's time, isn't it?
I read the docs of how to do it. Nice little touch, they tell you how to enable WSL from PowerShell but don't mention the GUI way to do it. It's genuinely a nice touch.
So I get everything installed and go to the app store to choose a distro. I want Ubuntu. I click the Install button...
...
... "Something unexpected happened"
Windows and their fucking useless error messages. Jesus, okay. I restart computer. Same issue. I update Windows. Same thing. Uninstall WSL. Reboot. Install WSL. Reboot. Same thing. HOLY SHIT.
Went to bed. Woke up. Tried to install Ubuntu.
"Yea ok lul i'll work this time for no reason"
Finally unzipped Lua.4 -
Playing Minecraft minigames.
It's a pictionary clone. One player draws a secret word while the other players have a minute to guess.
Along the bottom is a hint.
Hint is in "_ _ _ l e" format.
Possible word is apple, for example.
I already win half of the games.
I can win more.
Initiate cheating.
Python script that accepts input in same format as hint and returns a list of results based on the word database.
Any time I come across a new word just add it to the database.

Gaming on Windows vs Linux:
Windows:
After installing windows, and downloading Minecraft, I was able to run it at a solid 60fps while stretched across 3 monitors
Linux:
After installing, and spending many, many hours trying to set it up to detect more than 1 monitor, I admitted defeat and decided to play on just one. This monitor was also set at a weird resolution, which I briefly fixed, but then broke again immediately. I downloaded Minecraft and after running it, I was able to get a somewhat solid 7fps (10 if I was lucky).
On the bright side, it was able to run a terminal based game just fine on linux.34 -

I appreciate Minecraft and Minecraft mods. Teaching kids to eat tasty animals, and make glue from blood. There is a mod the literally makes glue by putting horses in a smelter. You can even heal the horse and keep it alive indefinitely. In constant agony. lol
Although, the idea that you can sustainably produce energy from wood is a bit suspect. Thankfully mods jumped in with nuclear reactors for real power generation.10 -

I need ideas.
What's the best use for several old, moderately crap laptops (<= 4GB RAM) I have lying around? I'm using one as a minecraft server because 3GB ram is enough and the Pi isn't, but past that, I'm pretty stuck. They all work, mostly, have CD drives and mostly free hard drives.24 -
My first project was made with scratch (Java based drag-drop language for kids to learn) when I was like 10
I wanted to make something like mine craft but in 2D.
Its a huge plane of stone and you have to break some of them to find diamonds.
I didn't know lists or array exist. I made one variable for every freakin' stone and it took me a solid day back then.
Also if you break a stone, the background changes and it might happen that a diamond appears at a while you made 10 weeks earlier.

Today my fellow @EaZyCode found out a local Hosting Provider has a massive security breach.
He wrote an Plugin for Minecraft with an own file explorer and the ability to execute runtime commands over it.
We discovered that this specific hosting provider stores the ftp passwords one level above the FTP-Root. In FUCKING PLAIN TEXT! AND THE MYSQL PASSWORD TOO! And even more shit is stored there ready to be viewed by intelligent people...
It's one of the fucking biggest Hosting provider Germanys!
But, because EaZyCode has such a great mind and always find such bugs, I give him the title "Providers Endboss" today, he has earned it.
Loving you ❤️
Edit: we used SendMail with runtime commands and sended too many empty Spammails (regret noting)24 -
So i just had an interesting conversation.
View source images in comments
So some background. I used to do a lot of Minecraft development and server configuration. And Minecraft being made of mostly 12-year-olds they really don't pay very well. So I moved on from Minecraft but someone reached out for me to do their configuration for their server. (this was about a month ago) and I quoted them 40/hr because that's what I charge for my web dev work. So he promptly declined and I thought that was that. But tonight he messaged me and found a 5 month old post saying how I was looking to do free development work in order to get experience. And here is how the converstion when.
(His name is "Candy")
Candy:
Lol
Trying to take advantage of me with your bullshit $40/hour claims
Which is outright laughable
https://mc-market.org/threads/...
”I am looking for a network to stay long-term with and help/see it grow into a bigger server. (I would expect pay later down the road if we work together on an ongoing basis)”
—
Quoting your MC-Market post.
What do you have to say for yourself? Trying to take advantage of people?
Going to say something else completely delusional or own up to the fact that you were trying to take advantage of me?
I already knew you were, but now I have the hard evidence.
As I am not a stupid person.
Not only did your friend lie, but you tried to take advantage of me, thinking I was stupid enough to fall for your $40/hour bullshit for basic configuration work. MineSaga charges $30.00 an hour on the high. Don’t even try to do the same shit you did to me to anyone else. It won’t work.
Me:I was interested in doing plugin development and learning so I offered my services for free so I could learn in a more real environment. I no longer do minecraft plugins rather I am a web developer and my rate is $40/hr I am good at configuration which is why i contacted you but I am not going to lower my rate because it is "simpler" work. Just like how you can higher a prostitute to wash your car but it would be cheaper to get the kid from around the block to do it. Also not sure what your end goal is here. I gave you my rate and you didn't agree with it. So you should just move on. Plus this is the minecraft world let me know when you get to the real world so you you can pay in big boy money.
Candy:
So your configuration work for minecraft is $40/h as well?
Lol
Absolutely hilarious.
Me:
did you not read my message?
"I am not going to lower my rate because it is "simpler" work."
Candy:
Who were your most recent clients?
Me:
i'm not going to give you that information
Candy:
Because you know you are lying to me with your crazy rates, and if you aren't, that means you have near to no clients.
Yet another lie.
Me:
keep telling yourself that buddy
Candy:
Lol
Good luck getting any more clients.
rip
Me:
?
I get more clients all the time
They just are not in your realm of your minecraft imagination where you can pay a developer 20$/hr
Candy:
I just strongly disagree with the fact that you are charging $40/hour for configurative work
xD
Me:
Okay
But why even contact me? Did you really think trying to "Call me out" was going to have me lower my rates or something.
Just get over it
Candy:
I haven't called you out and overcharging like that to others in the minecraft realm for a significant gain in money for work that is not worth nearly that amount is absolutely delusional.
I would recommend you stop making up false assumptions
Me: What ever you say
I left it at that. There was some more stuff but it was not that interesting so i left it out5 -

Minecraft mods get me into programming. I used to spend hours yelling at Eclipse for not making that stupid JAR file! 7 years later, I'm pursuing a career as someone who spends hours yelling at a CLI assembler for not making that stupid ISO file! Good times.2

My daughter showed me a "computer" she made in Minecraft using 2 trapdoors. One for keyboard and one for screen. She folded the screen one upward to show its like a laptop. It was the oak trapdoor that has the four square holes:

Me: So your computer runs Windows?
She: No!8 -
If anything taught me that garbage collectors aren't the one true answer for memory management then it's got to be modded minecraft
It takes around 10-20 seconds only to disconnect from a game and go back to the main menu.
You also get memory leaks, which result in several second long freezes when the GC kicks in, that happen every 15 seconds.1 -
I'm a teacher myself (for basic Html/css/js and sql 101) and there's nothing like the feeling of seeing your pupils progress. Makes me warm inside everytime :3
As a student though, i remember a friend of mine used minecraft and redstone for a logic circuits course. The teacher, which i guess wanted to show himself, was like "Yeaaah right redstone, i was doing that 20 years ago ...". How to loose credibility 1018 -

So I've got my first sort of proper gig. I'm tasked with writing...
A goddamn minecraft plugin in java.
Well, it's actually rather fun strangely enough. My ideas of payment were not declined but rather accepted, the other devs are nice and everything is going well for now.

That moment when your Minecraft account has a typo in the password. Every damn time I have to retry the login until I magically mistype it the same way again. Of course I can't reset the password because the email address of that account also has a typo in the password. How does that even happen6

So Minecraft Dunegons launched today.
Not my style of game, but I did purchase hero edition because fuck, the price is LOW given the IP attached and the fact that it was developed by Mojang. $20 for the full game and $30 for full game + extras? Incredibly refreshing in a market where $60 is standard for full game, and up to $75-80 for extras (like "I paid too much money" skins and such. I got a chicken pet and promise of two upcoming DLC with my extra $10)
Anyways I was happy with the price of a game for once and wanted to share!4 -
Italian gaming community is a shit place. In my spare time I make website for minecraft servers or whatever game you want, but I found out that people prefer to have a bad website but pay less instead of pay more for a decent website.
P.S. I'm not saying that I'm the best italian web designer.2 -

What games made you racist? Or had racist content when you thought about it? (Whether intentional or not.)
Skyrim (somewhat Morrowind too, not Oblivion). I hate piss elves (high elves). They are condescending cunts. Didn't much care for Dark Elves in Morrowind. They were always swearing at me. Orcs are kinda stupid, but their abilities made me respect them. I have great respect for the Nords. Some of them wanted to murder all elves. I am okay with this. The Foresworn are gross.
Minecraft. Didn't make me racist, but had some interesting inclusions. First off all the villagers looks Jewish and are the arbiters of trade. Weird that. Then there is the Endermen. They are black, they steal blocks, they were introduced with watermelons (maybe not true, what I heard), and want to fight you if you look at them. I wonder if they will get changed later because of this...
You know a game is doing something right on their stories to get you wrapped up in the politics to choose sides. I think this may be part of the success of Skyrim. I hope to make my own players polarized on topics in my games, but in a good way.24 -
Got another thing I'm interested in hearing from other developers.
What made you the developer you are today? Like what made you get into programming and was was a defining moment that changed your development process?
For me I started out making Minecraft mods because I was bored, spent most my time hard coding and suddenly discovered a way to do external assets and since then everything I've made is build to be individual standalone modules with easy to create user generated content.9 -
It's kinda cool how a $5 VPS (Linode Nanode) is able to run a vanilla Minecraft Spigot server for like 6-7 people and still can serve some basic stuff just fine. I get monitoring warnings about >90% CPU usage sometimes, but everything is more or less lagless.
Time to try hosting some other games: CS1.6, Doom Classic, and UT2004 up next.6 -
Just found out that a big hosting provider saves a user's SQL and FTP password in a plain text file just at the parent folder of the normally accessible ftproot.
Using some linux commands you can
cat ../mysql_pw
cat ../ftp_password.txt
IT'S NOT EVEN ENCRYPTED OR HASHED
(This is tested on a minecraft server, would also work on other services)5 -
Cat-warming solution when the power goes out
Problem: Your power goes out in the middle of winter. Your cat is cold and will not leave you alone. You are her only source of heat.
Step 1: Find battery-powered laptop.
Step 2: Power on laptop and turn off sleep/hibernation in the settings.
Step 3: Open up 5 instances of Minecraft and load a single-player world in each.
Step 4: Close laptop and flip it upside down
Step 5: Place cat on computer above the fan. Cat will begin to purr.
(Yes this works)2 -
I started with C#at the age of 12, it was way too complicated and I learned Lua for Computer craft instead. Next I learned Ruby for RPG Maker and finally Javascript for web Dev stuff.
Now comfortable enought with Javascript but put off by its quirks I learned Java for compiling faulty minecraft mods, but I only fully learned it in school.
At the same time I learned python and quite liked it for scripting, but ultimately it was not a good match for my projects.
Disapointed with Java I returned to C# and liked it quite a lot, but started learning C++. After touching my first Microcontroller I learned C and I've stuck with it as my favorite language.
Along the way I picked up Kotlin, in case I need to do some Java shit. Much better.
But how did I come to an understanding of programming. Well I got better after each time I got a layer deeper until I hit silicon.
I had tinkered with electronics since I was 15 so I just had to study some boolean mathematics in school and some vintage computers architecture and instruction sets and...
Then I finally understood how that shit I wrote in Lua way back when was actually executed by my hardware.
Allways dig deeper and you'll find enlightenment eventually. -

I don't know what you guys think but I freaking love programming my own Minecraft client. It sounds childish but I love to see server owners rage when they see their Servers dying because of my exploits. It's a good feeling.
But I got 3 DOS attacks afterwards so there is a high risk to make lifetime enemy's.

I stumbled across this code golf the other day, I thought I had seen all of the esoteric languages... Then I saw Minecraft...
https://codegolf.stackexchange.com/...3 -
At the age of 10 I got interest in ''changing computer'' things. I started to watch over the shoulder (I don't know if you can say that in English ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) of my dad. He programmed I2C and other microcontroller.
I started with little batch files and Visual Basic. I think we all know the ''Virus'' with shutdown 😂
At school in the computer lesson we learned a few other languages. I was the only one who learned these languages at home too. The biggest problem is that you think ''I learn at school and at home I can play games''.
Some day I started to learn PHP and Java at home. I came to Java with Minecraft. Yes, Minecraft. You can learn so many things (like the structure of a network packages from the server) and you can visualize everything with blocks.
Since the professional colleague we learn C# and Python which I use in some projects at home too, for example for the rasperrypi.
Now I'm 17 and I can C#, Visual Basic, PHP, JS, Python, JS and HTML1 -
A few days ago I decided to learn C by writing a simple Minecraft clone. Guess who has less than 26¼ hours to do university exercises for two weeks. And It's not like I had double that time because of Christmas Holidays.
-
I mean yeah I use command line Git to manage sets of Minecraft mods. It's not a big deal or anything.10

Man, running a Minecraft server with 5 players on a VPS with 1 vCore and 1GB of ram is *really* pushing this thing to its limits!
Thank goodness Ubuntu Server doesn't need much ram to run, because Minecraft is a real resource hog.
I hope Hetzner approves my account on monday, so we can move to a 2 core VPS with 4GB of ram!20 -
For as long as I can remember I watched my dad at his computer doing work and programming, so I got interested in computers. I started using and mastering computer skills when I was 5 and helped people with their computer problems. I was hesitant to learn how to program because it looked hard, but I eventually have I'm and started to learn Java at 12. I started by making Bukkit plugins for Minecraft (1.7.10). I learned to program, because I knew that computers will one day help people, and I wanted to help people too.2

Notch.
Not even specifically for minecraft but for the live streams he did for the ludum dares, how he made up games from nothing just inspires me big time.10 -
When you have to call me to help you set up your Minecraft server, you shouldn't run a Minecraft server. As easy as it is.

My friend who constantly keeps messaging me to switch to windows:
WINDOWS GRAPHICS IS BETTER THAN UR LOONIX HEHEHE FUCC UR OPINION LMAO
le me: can ssh to my linux machine from anywhere and it can handle over 1000 users simultaneously and if one Xorg client on the main machine dies, we can just close it and open another. while their windows' whole graphics crashes if there's too much load on their graphics. We even played minecraft on the main machine lol, while other devs were connected to it.10 -
FUCK YOU FUCKING AZURE FUCKING FUNCTIONS:
EITHER LIMIT MY NUMBER OF TCP CONNECTIONS (before violently crashing)
or
FORCE ME TO USE THE GODDAMN PORT-PISSING, BARELY-MULTITHREAD-USABLE, SETTINGS-IGNORING EXCUSE OF A PATHETIC BUILT-IN HTTPCLIENT ON FUCKING CRACK (Seriously .net people fix that shit).
But not both... both are not okay!
If your azure function just moderately uses outgoing Http requests you will inevitably be fucked up by the dreaded connection exhaustion error. ESPECIALLY if using consumption plans.
I Swear, every day i am that much closer to permanently swearing off everything cloud based in favor of VM's (OH BUT THEN YOU HAVE TO MAINTAIN THE VM's BOO HOO, I HAVE TO BABYSIT THE GODDAMN CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE AS WELL AT LEAST I CAN LOG IN TO A VM TO FIX SHIT, fuck that noise)
I am in my happy place today. At least I'm having great success diving into minecraft modding on the side, that shit is FUN!1 -
When I was 12 I created my own LEGO manuals and monopoly boardgame variants.
When I was 14 and into gaming I had fun playing with a Q3 level editor for Wolfenstein (GtkRadiant), and drew boardgame maps.
When I was 16 I translated the game battledawn.com to French for in-game currency in return.
When I was 18 I fiddled with texture packs for Minecraft and got interested in Total War mods.
When I was 20 I met a student who studied webdev & design. I was so excited about basic HTML, CSS and later JS and PHP, that I read and learnt some every evening (and even failed an exam because I was learning PHP until 5AM)
I always wanted to use my skills to create something of use to others. Open-source is the perfect avenue for that and is also what enabled me to get here in the first place. And though I m've been professionally employed as dev since 2015, only the last 2 yrs I finally consider myself skilled enough to give back something of quality :)2 -
telling your girlfriend's younger brother you've hacked his Minecraft account is evil but his reaction is priceless

I Started in 2012 at 12 years old with Minecraft as an introduction to computer programming. I created a few of my own mods and released them to the forums. I think my name was "lilwillis2" if you want to look them up. Once I created mods, I got into game development. I used The Cherno's game programming tutorials and a few others on youtube. After having my fun with game Dev and the debt of College soon to come, I got into developing my own apps, which got me into using react-native. React native made me realize that I should probably try to stay up to date with the latest frameworks and languages, so that I can create a surpieror product in much less time. It also made me realize how quickly programming changes. Last year, before getting into react-native, I got a summer job using Django and mezzanine at a local company as a web developer and they want me to work there again this year, maybe even on a salary with a pay raise. I recently turned 18 and I already look at code I wrote a few months ago as crap 😂, but hey it means I'm improving quickly!
BTW, if anyone knows any tips on paying/saving for college, please do let me know!1 -
As someone who uses UNIX and UNIX-like systems on a daily basis, and someone dealing with computer support in a school, I experience so, so many issues, many of which others have already ranted about.
For no reason at all, I find it incredibly frustrating how many high school students' understanding of sudo is limited to this:
Student: Hey, isn't sudo the minecraft command
Me: Erm
Student: You know, the one skeppy uses... to troll players? Anyway, you're doing it wrong. There should be a slash before you run the command
Me: aaargh.
and so on. Happens probably every 10th time I invoke sudo.
I mean, really? Surely these kids, with all their complaints and lines: hacking into the mainframe/whats the admin password/why did you block my VPN/ and so on, would know what sudo is. But NO, they just don't seem to get it. Sometimes I lose my hope in the futures of these kids.5 -
just bought a dedicated server, coming in the mail this Friday. gonna use it for a 24/7 Minecraft server and maybe some web apps to experiment with stuff. I'm also going to have it connected to my TV as a media center occasionally. best Linux distro for dedicated server? bonus points for easy to install and configure14

Well, this goes back a few years to when I first started to program in Minecraft. I had an idea of developing Gun Game in Minecraft before any of these big servers had created them, so I had a few questions and asked it on Bukkit forums. So he responded to my questions and seemed interested in the idea, so one day we got to talking on Skype and were working on the project. After that project, we worked on hundreds of smaller projects and even started our own hosting company (Which was sold off now, due to us being in school). So I went from not having any programming friends to having one, just cause of a Minecraft plugin idea.1

TIL that you can use underscores as a decorative numeric separator in ES 2021 like
const FOURTY_FIVE_MILLION = 45_000_000;
I learned this from some shitty advertisement on a Minecraft economy server where I thought the little shit was just trying to be techy.
Luckily I wasn't actually rude to him because then I would have looked like an ass.5 -
Created a simple bot for an online game using puppeteer.
After an evening (and night) of dev and debugging (quite some rejected promise errors), it worked fine and was ready for a 10-minutely cron job.
Fixed a couple bugs in the first three hours. Then started playing minecraft, which lagged like hell.
Opened task manager and saw a list of about 25 headless chrome processes. They had not been closed because of unhandled errors before the close method call 😵
Now added some basic error handling ☺2 -
I find it so unbelievably satisfying to see trend patterns in the client launches from the user's that use my mod. Basically, every week the number of people using it grow, but it keeps the same rhythm.
Sunday most people of the week, Monday least people of the week; then building up to Sunday every day a little more. BUT then there's Thursday where a few people are taking an early night or something.
I guess the satisfying part is just that, however, how random and unique everyone thinks that they are. In a crowd - everyone together - shows a lot of patterns and similarities.1 -
Dont blame me for making Minecraft plugins, but holy shit i really hate stairs right now.
Im modifying some old code of mine to add extra features, and i just need to be able to rotate stairs 90, 180 and 270 degrees, then im past this bump.
Stairs get their direction based on a byte value that makes no fucking sense to me.
North = 3
West = 1
East = 0
South = 2
Ive been drawingto see if that made me go "oh like that", checking if the bits of each value had a system, and now im here.
Titshit.
I dont know who made it like this, but i really dont want to make some static switch or if/else statement to process this directional trash. I want it flexible.
If you spotted a system to the numbers, please mail me a rock, and then tell me how i fix this.12 -
I wanted to come up with a project to get into Minecraft modding that is too stupid to engage my perfectionism. With that in mind, I present to you Stumble, a Minecraft mod that makes you fall down stairs if you try to run on them.
https://github.com/lbfalvy/...1 -
So I think my dumbest project so far was when I created a pseudo-random number generator which instead of using some proper source of randomness used freaking Minecraft Villagers.
I wrote a blog post on it, so feel free to take a look there to see how I did it and perhaps learn something about randomness.

I was doing some maintenance on a production server for a game hosting company (Minecraft hosting, for those interested). A week before, I had created a backup of an account directory before trying to solve an issue, I now wanted to remove this directory.
Since I am way too confident in my ability to not mess up, I was logged in as root.
Instead of typing `rm -rf ../` (I know using -f is a bad idea), I typed `rm -rf /`.
The distro we were using did not have any protections built in.
The directory I wanted to remove as gone, but so was the rest of the server once I realized what I had done.4 -
I think I am going to start doing lets play series for minecraft and post online. I spend a lot of time playing modpacks with my kids and I should just start recording and add audio commentary later. I can compress the video and do speedups for boring parts and cut other segments. If I create a spreadsheet for the modpack and do it by numbers then I can burn through the modpack fast. I like watching lets play series to figure out modpacks. Especially direwolf. However, these lets play episodes are a good 30 to 45 minutes long. I want to play, not watch someone else play. I hate the ones where they don't know how to do the modpack and they don't cut the video. Direwolf does a great job editing his videos. His video is FULL of good content.
If I can get the videos short enough it will keep the attention span of the mass plebes that cannot find their way out of a paper bag. This is definitely catering to the lowest denominator. I can turn my hobby into something useful. I want to try and compress the 30 minute video into 5 to 10 minutes. It will be a minecraft junky playthrough. Maybe add some time lapse stuff too.
I think I should do the playthrough first, reset server and do again with video capture. I want to incorporate comedy into the videos too. Gaming should be fun. I wonder how much space a 30 minutes video will take?6 -
everything microsoft makes is SHIT
for example, windows, and the fact that they bought out minecraft and ruined it with their bullshit "child friendly" feature
vscode's liveshare is ACTUALLY MAKING ME LOSE MY DAMN MIND TRYING TO WORK WITH SOMEONE
just now i was writing code and i realized, it wasn't even updating the file at all, it was just pretending to save changes, while on the hoster's end, nothing changed. at all
i had to rejoin the session 500 times, tell the host to restart, and it was generally a whole nightmare
nothing i typed in applied to the other end, and there were already 50+ errors from nothing in the php file i was working on
and it was erroring out at the most RANDOM spots, where nothing is wrong at all with the code, it was picking up something invalid, but NOT SHOWING ME WHAT WAS WRONG
i rejoined and saw a shit ton of test, an if that i never saw before i rejoined
in general why does everything microsoft make have to be so bad, and unreliable
smh microsoft u can do better4 -

All total I spent about $450.11 -
Fuck Google analytics .. seriously .. fuck it .. I understand it's a free tool that doesn't mean you mask your incompetency behind that banner.
Im pretty sure minecraft mods have better documentation than this POS.
I really like the user demographics data it gives , but with the asterisk on literally every other metric it gets harder to believe the ones that are functional.
I cant express exactly how many times I end up with hordes of articles that point out small caveats with this shit.

A few years ago I had a Minecraft server and wanted to create my own plugins for it. I failed, but never stopped trying.
Did an internship at a software development company and got an Arduino as a gift; I was hooked - controlling stuff and seeing that stuff happens because of my code? Count me in!
Took classes in school that teach me coding and databases. I also taught myself a bit of C#, Java, C++ and PHP.
5 years and 3 internships later, I'm finally starting my paid training for the job as a programmer next year at the company that gave me the Arduino.
Gaming is what got me into coding, and I couldn't be happier. :) -
My mouses right button kept double clicking. This makes it really hard to play minecraft. It was a cheap logitech mouse from a wireless keyboard/mouse combo. So I went to the store to find a new one. Almost all the wireless mice were gone. Apparently WFH people hit walmart. I didn't want another single wireless mouse. This would mean I need the adapter for the keyboard (for keyboard mouse combo) and the new mouse plugged in. My computer is a laptop so there are not a lot of those slots. So I looked for a bluetooth mouse. Only one there and it was a sucky Razer. I have not liked Razer since they required people to register their software with an account before using their drivers. This really made me avoid this brand like the plague. So I finally settled on a wired gaming mouse. It has a nice long 6ft cord so it works with my setup. It is a G502 Hero. It works really nicely without drivers. I will be testing with drivers tonight. I usually buy el cheapo mice so this is new to me. So far so good.16

Agreed to help out these 2 guys on a minecraft mod pack idea they had... stipulated this is a side project for me and I'm not going to dedicate too much time to it. They were fine with that
Fast forward a few months main 'idea guy' loses his job so spends more time on the pack and starts hounding me for progress and updates and throwing more and more things for me to do. He's also getting progressively angrier at my lack of substantial progress
Like fuck dude i told you this is s fucking side project to me. I'll work on it when I fucking want to. Hell I'm one more shouting match away from telling him to fuck off and find some other dumbass to be the only programmer in this group and get ignored when it comes to fucking anything else
Their idea of 'source control' is a fucking multi Mc instance that gets shared by the main guy every time HE changes anything. Any scripts or configuration edits I do I need to walk him through so he can update that instance
No clue why I put up with it so long. Maybe because other guy was a cool friend back in college. But at this point they both can fuck off6 -
Trigger Warning (2 of them):
Minecraft is the only redeeming piece of software ever written in Java script.7 -
Why is netbeans, or Java in general, so fucking bad at handling memory ? I mean, I'm literally doing nothing on my code and I see my IDE consuming more and more RAM, to some point it goes over 1GB so I have to close then reopen it to "flush" the memory taken...
It's 2017, how the fuck can't we still manage to actually use a correct amount of RAM when I open a barely 10MB project ??
And it applies to everything related to Java. Like Android, Minecraft and other Java based softwares...18 -
So let me get this straight: Minecraft Bedrock edition is essentially Microsoft being like "lol let's just quickly recode what they did over the years in Java, but in C++ and in a weekend"?
What a fucking flex.4 -
worst part of programming is knowing what needs to happen, having an idea of the logic that needs to run, but having absolutely no idea how to get that logic implemented.
Been staring at my screen for 30 minutes at this point starting to type a function, then deleting it realizing that method won't work, trying another one before deleting that one as well, over and over and over again
I'm about to just close this damn thing and play Minecraft for an hour, maybe a mindless Minecraft break will help.2 -
I am SOOO fucking sick of being asked if our website and gaming servers are going to be GDPR compliant. All these game owners in a panic changing everything they do just to conform to this law.
Fuck GDPR. In all reality COME AT ME BITCH. The EU wants to grow a pair of balls and act like the world internet police? Bring it the FUCK on. You can't even stop pirating in your own country, so how the FUCK are you going to regulate and enforce this law on HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of servers, when your punk ass government can't even shutdown a single torrenting website.
Give me a fucking break, and shame on you pussies for allowing it. All you people running around scared acting like your private gaming servers are important. I give a shit less how much work you put into your server. I have put more work than most anyone else, but you don't see me trying to act self important as if my gaming server is some fortune 500 company.
Your server isn't important and neither are you. The government doesn't give a shit about your server so can we all just stop acting like this fucking matters. NO ONE FUCKING CARES ABOUT YOUR SERVER.
NO ONE is going to come and sue you for not complying. GDPR is for business, and anyone that wants to argue no look it says right here it applies to all is a fucking MORON. Do you idiots stop and think or do you just believe everything typed out on paper.
THEY CANT ENFORCE THIS ON EVERYONE. They don't have the resources. So use your fucking heads and stop being so fucking scared of a law that has no resources to stop you. THEY CAN"T DO ANYTHING. EU and whoever made their polices, I DARE them to try and touch my server, I WANT them to start something with me, just so I can show the rest of the world why the Internet is still the wild west and why they have no power over me.
You think pirate bay is the only one who knows how to hide their server? You think pirate bay is the only one who keeps backups of their server to be able to re release in an instant somewhere else in the world? Bitch get real this is the internet, a place where a 5 year old can buy hand grenades from the Red Silk Road, and you wanna talk to me about your privacy? Go fuck yourself.
It's not my problem some douche bag went onto a site that used his personal information in the wrong manner. So how about you do what everyone else does and browse ANONYMOUSLY. But no it would be to easy for governments to make their own citizens responsible. Instead they have to hold all of YOUR hands, because you people are to stupid to protect yourself.
Wake the fuck up world, and stop being a bunch of whining little brats who cry for the government to bubble wrap your world so you can live safer. Natural selection is long overdue for a lot of morons still breathing air.18 -
Quite a few years ago (late 90s, early 00s maybe) I remember watching a TV show where they demonstrated what virtual reality might be like. It was all rough polygons, no lighting or texturing etc.
I'd heard about the Oculus Rift and considered trying it. I get motion sickness sometimes from certain 3D games (Deus Ex, Portal, sometimes even Minecraft) so was hesitant. Last week, decided to just get one and see how it went.
Didn't expect it to be as good as it is - compared to what was envisaged ~20 years ago. No motion sickness. Not only was the graphics detail amazing but the responsiveness is insane. In another 20 years time what will there be?
Anyway on dev topic: Now it makes me want to play with a 3D/VR engine. Considering Unreal Engine but not really sure where to start learning. Maybe a book? Though reviews tend to say they go out of date quick, I do prefer a physical book for learning tech stuff.1 -
I make code that lets the blocks enter an inactive state so that they stop ticking after they are no longer able to spread to any nearby blocks.
Obviously something in this either broke, and the blocks never turn inactive. NEVER.
This actually has some dire consequences, including, but not limited to, this:2 -
Steps to make a portable version of Minecraft Java Edition (for Windows):
1. Get a flash drive, preferably of a decent size (>500MB). I used a 128GB flash USB 3.
2. Download Java JRE (version 8).
3. Download MultiMC
4. Install Java, put destination on flash drive. example: x:/mc/java
5. Eject flash drive.
6. Uninstall JRE from computer. This will remove the installation entry in the computer. Since flash drive is ejected it cannot delete off drive.
7. Install multimc. example: x:/mc/multimc
8. Point multimc to JRE location on flash drive.
9. Edit the path of the JRE to be something like this: ../java/etc... This keeps it from trying to use the drive letter and use a relative path instead. I edited the multimc config file to do this. Can probably be done in program too. If you modify config file you will have to quit multimc.
10. Login with your minecraft account in multimc.
11. Download some version of minecraft or modpack.
12. Enjoy on any windows computer and take with you!8 -
I have an internal perception of myself. It isn't an image like a memory is, and it's not a description such as a sentence, but it's purely a feeling. I feel it in the core of my soul, not my body. And when I listen to Minecraft volume Alpha, it transforms my internal perception for the duration of album and the feeling lingers afterwards.
By now I must have a year of in game time and hearing those sounds and seeing the old textures brings be back to the days of middle school playing Minecraft Pocket Edition Lite on my first phone.
I wasn't happier back then. I'm just as happy today as I was back then. But restoring my inner self to that time, just briefly, is wonderful.
I'm thankful to Minecraft for being a great game. It has seen many changes in it's public perception. In the beginning, it was for all ages. Deadmau5 played it, notch developed it. It was a different beast. Then, without the content of the game changing at all, it became a child's game. Then it became a child's game that PewDiePie played and it was acceptable to play without any shame again. And now, once again, it is on a downward slope to being a child's game.
No matter what the shifting sands of public view on the game is, I will always hold this game close to my heart and I will continue to play it whether it's socially acceptable or not. If for nothing else than to remind my soul of a simpler time.1 -
Playing ATM8 Minecraft modpack. I don't know if I have burnout, but I just want to play and zone out after work. On my breaks I look up ways to do things in the game. The game is like this huge lego set to play with tons of different takes on modded minecraft. I can solve the same problem a hundred different ways. Some of those ways will cause lag, some are slow, some are just fast. I can solve things in game using programming languages as well. It all comes down to creativity and experimentation. You can also blow up shit. That is always fun.2
-
There's nothing funnier than talking to another programmer around a group of non programmers. Feel like the fucking rick and morty memes when you go "Hey bro. I heard you were having issues with finding the direction between two vectors, are you telling me you don't know that the direction is basically x1-x2 and y1 - y2? Just be glad you arent trying to rotate the object towards the second one with quaternions. I know eulers work but its still a pain in the ass to figure out the euler direction." And everyone sits there looking at you like youre speaking minecraft enchanting table

My childhood basically. Saved up all my money to buy Pokémon games. I had one that was red tho. The amount of hours I spent on this thing... If not thousands of hours... Tens of thousands...
Then moved to Minecraft, and that's how I got coding 😇 (batch but still)5 -
So, it was kinda a reversed effect?
My parents didn't give me access to computer for a long time, the only option was to play games with my dad. I also didn't have a phone for a quite long. And, when I see what is happening today with the kids that get their first own phone/tablet at age of 4, I am really happy about it.
But, somehow, that made me really interested in what runs all the squares on the screen etc. When I convinced my parents to give me my first laptop — to play Minecraft with classmates — almost the first thing I did after installing the game was searching "how to make a website". I played with some shitty builders, then I discovered HTML (which was :o for me then). Small steps into PHP, then some JS. I really enjoyed it, but PHP gave me headache each time I wrote something bigger (I was writing a super spaghetti code then, I was inexperienced), so I thought of trying something else...
Minecraft plugins!
I fallen in love with Java.
And after that the real journey began.5 -
My fascination for programming began around 13, when i started developing plugins for my minecraft server in java.
Had an awesome time with creating plugins for some fully custom servers with relatively large playerbases(50-200 players, depended on the time of the day).
This sparked something in me, and i started creating crapp ass "portfolio" sites for myself with php and mysql login and registration forms. After that I got into some basic c# abd had fun with some cute console/form applications.
And here comes today, in the process of picking up more css, php, html, js knowledge, probably heading towards react or vue.
I just love programming to death. -
I've already ranted about this, the hdd randomly broke over night. I was (i shit you not) just about to set up backups for it this day.
Being relatively new to linux but confident with bash and cli and stuff.. reading "I/O Error" as output of nearly any command on a server rented somewhere 150 km away from me was like a punch in the face.:D
It wasn't directly bad, but it was kinda sad, I had a (now don't laugh - a man gotta chill from time to time) minecraft server running there with tons of mods and we were multiple 100s of hours into it already..
But not only that, my projects weren't on any git or anything anymore (local copies were gone, guess what gitlab i set up proudly i used..) and there was no recovering these little loved ones, together with my website.
It was a black day, my group i had to work with in university doubted me because for them i wasn't able to manage a git server properly and i hope it does not happen again..): -
When I was in School we had one Computer room where the PC's were the school used to 'teach stuff about pcs' (mostly office and some Maya). These where connected to another via the network and reset to a predefined state Everytime they were rebooted.
Since we were somehow able to get into the room during breaks between the lessons we obviously abused the room and played Minecraft in there but since the machines reset each reboot there was not much progress. Also there was no Java installed, so we needed to install that as well (that can take ages on old, school machines.).
Since the machines were connected via the school network I found out how to reboot or shutdown the other machines remotely. That was really funny for me and a friend who quickly found that Minecraft is too boring. We were just constantly rebooting the PC's the others were just launching Minecraft on and thus resetting the whole Java and Minecraft installation.
Got a lot of angry curses but nothing serious happened afterwards. Was the first I felt really badass on the computer tho.1 -
Every problem I ever had with a game development engine, only made me hope for something better.
After all, we’re independent developers, not activision! What the hell is an “indie” anyway? I’d even grown a sort of disgust at the term, as if saying it, without having published anything, was being fake. The word felt vapid. Like calling yourself an e-celebrity, or apple putting an i in front of everything.
(Don’t you know its year 20xx, we attach coin to brands now! Dogecoin, ecoin, walmartcoin, hospitalCoin for when you really really just want an appendectomy).
This is my newsletter, Y Intercept, and the story of my many embarrassing failures, and what I have learned from them.

I have always been interested in computers. when I was in second grade, I decided I was no good at electronic circuits, and decided I wanted to program instead. My dad told be to check out free basic, and I immediately downloaded FBIDE, and followed tutorial videos on YouTube. once I finished the videos, I started to write mad libs programs. I made various types of calculators, etc. and loved it, so later I learned a bit of VB. I messed with that a bit, but didn't like it too much, and started web developing. The moment I saw some JS code, it was like an instinctive second language to me. I learned js and started making some ugly, but cool interactive web pages. When computercraft came out for minecraft, I learned lua and got a deeper understanding of programming. Now, I am using node to build a personal-use IoT server and currently making a drone flight program using a raspberry pi3

I love sports and code. I dreamt of being able to teach my boy how to play ball but after a few years of TBall and Soccer, I accepted that he did not like sports. I didn't want to be the kind of father that forces their child to play when they don't want to so I let the dream go. Besides, he'll be a coder like his old man right? He's 10 now, so I tried to start getting him into working on some Minecraft mods. He loves Minecraft... but no interest in code. 😭4

So I came across this meme and it got me thinking.
We say that if our universe is truly infinite, we are bound to find a place that is the exact replica of our local cosmic neighborhood eventually if we keep looking.
But procedurally generated worlds like minecraft have that determinism to their world structure(with an initial seed to calculate everything) where you can predict how the local neighborhood would look like at any distance, no matter how far.
So would it be correct to say that it's not guarenteed that in a game like minecraft where the world is generated procedurally with a deterministic algorithm, will be such that you can find the exact same local neighborhood from one seed in any other seed?18 -
Update on my Minecraft server if anyone is interested, recently just setup a test server to work out requirements, so if anyone has windows 10 edition of any form of iOS or Android Minecraft PE feel free to try it...
IP: minecraft.lxmcf.com
Port: 65535
Just let me know how stable things seem and if you have any issues connecting (it constantly gets stuck on trying to find server but will connect if you try .-.)7 -
I decided I am going to get full into Minecraft modding. It will be an opportunity to learn Java and Kotlin. I want to explore some game ideas in a well defined sandbox.
Some things I want to explore.
1. AI that helps you build and survive. This fascinates me and seems like it could be a good challenge. I like the idea of learning how to separate structures into chunks. I think I will learn a bit about tree data structures here. Maybe learn something about BSP trees (if applicable).
2. The idea of an RPG quest system tacked onto a sandbox. I want to spawn structures and create non-repetitive story lines. Minecraft can be really desolate if you are not playing on a server. Worlds tend to be empty and devoid of story.
3. Maybe try a hand at terrain gen. This could be fun to explore entropy math. It is fun to draw things with math.
I am sure I will come up with other fun things to explore here.9 -
I followed a tutorial on modding minecraft, I made a block that got generated into the world. Ohh my god I was hooked when I saw it in the game. Been loving it ever since
-
At some point I was watching a sethbling video about programming mining turtles in a Minecraft mod called computer craft, which uses a reimplementation of lua with some mod specific functions. This inspired me to learn lua, then as I got bored with that I started moving through different languages until I settled on primarily kotlin and rust1

I'm studying games development at university and as a course it may not be the best but I enjoy it. With the department courses like Computer Sciences etc run alongside and we're given the choice to swap if we want. At the end of first year a few left the class and a few came in.
Forward to now where we're actually making games. I'm in a team of 4 working on a minecraft clone using Direct X 12 (50% of the module). Immediately one asked "who actually wants to make games?" to which they all said "no... This course is pointless, I don't want to make games" . So now I'm stuck on a team with a group of people who think its all stupid and want to do bare minimum work and want to solve no problems or do anything interesting with the project...4 -
Definition: Minecraft Mods
QOL improvements that introduce a grind to reduce the grind of something else.8 -
(Spoilers about Ready Player one here)
FUCK YEAH!
I watched Ready Player One in 4DX AND IT COSTED AN UNHOLY FUCKING AMOUNT OF MONEY!
yet it was THE BEST MOVIE Ive ever watched, AND I MEAN IT! IT WAS SO FUCKING GREAT! THE CGI THE ACTORS!
STEVEN DID AN EXCELLENT JOB!
and as a Trekkie I LOVED the scene of Hallidays death I mean his coffin WAS A FUCKING PHOTON TORPEDO! and in the Last scene you could see a bat'leth HOW HOW COOL WAS THAT!
And dont get me started on all the other References like the Holy Handgranade, Rubiks Cube, FUCKING BATMAN HELPING SOMEONE CLIMBING, Minecraft OASIS edition, Halo... I CANT ITS TOO MUCH!1 -
Just got out of a dev hellhole
Being stuck in one is just minecraft where the diamonds move and you don't wanna stop digging cause they look close but they keep getting away1 -
It's 10:30 at night, you have had two large glasses of wine, and its time to "play the shit outa minecraft!"...4
-
A way of running Minecraft servers on AWS and automatically hibernate instances when there are no players online.16
-
I cycle between games I play. I am now back to Minecraft. Playing FTB OceanBlock. It is progression lite. Less of a grind with short and long term rewards. It is like a skyblock, but you can start on an actual island. I am really enjoying the mods FTB developed just for this modpack. The modpack has plenty of tech in it to satisfy my need to build something purely for fun.5

Remember when we were talking about studios turning movies into shit?
Well this is the trailer they put out for the Minecraft movie:
https://youtube.com/watch/...
The reception has been terrible. I saw what the down votes were and they were over 7 million at the time. It is ratioed hard.
Then someone used the same audio and made what I feel like it should have looked:
https://youtube.com/watch/...
The audio works very well with this animated version. Someone made this animated version of the trailer in a MONTH! Holy shit!
Now I see this version of what they thought it should be like and I am dying:
https://youtube.com/watch/...
I just don't see how movie studios can be this bad. The fans made something more compelling in less than a month. I don't see the official Minecraft movie to be anything other than a torrent if your bored movie. It is not worth paying money.3 -
So I recently purchased Ark and I gotta say I can totally recommend single player/ local multi.
It's not exactly stable. And non-dedicated private servers are pretty limited. But it's fun nonetheless. The animals are neat, the landscape is gorgeous, and the base building is interesting and intuitive.
One of the things I don't exactly love about Minecraft is that your shelter doesn't matter much. Build some walls to keep the mobs out and you're good. But Ark is much more hostile. You need to avoid cold, and rain, and heat, and big Dino's that want to bite you and stomp you. So your shelter actually protects you.
Not only that but materials are so easy to get in Minecraft. You can have a full house by the end of your first day, easily. But Ark makes resource collecting difficult. You need some dino companions to hold your stuff because it becomes too heavy for you alone. And it takes days, maybe even in-game weeks to build a suitable house. And you can spend much, much longer making it more than just a wooden box.
Cool game! Definitely in my top 3 right now.6 -
I spent a lot of my time as a little kid playing video games and typing on my old computer. Somehow I found GameMaker (6 or 7, I think) and started pumping out little games with the free version. I didn't like the drag and drop stuff so I learned GML (GameMaker Language).
A few years later someone gave me a PHP book and while I never actually learned anything from it, it did get me interested in learning a real programming language (not GML).
Around this time Minecraft became popular, and with a lot of YouTube videos I got a grasp on Java, and a little C++/C#.
Tinkering around in scripting languages finally lead me to JavaScript which of course introduced me to HTML and CSS.
I loved how quickly a website could me created compared to a compiled program, so I started spending most of my time learning Web Technologies.
And that leads me to where I am today. By this point I've spent over half of my life programing in various languages and formats and I've loved every bit of it! -
I had been building dumb Minecraft mods in Java for under a year, and my parents wanted to know how much I was actually teaching myself. (I was 15 at the time.) They signed me up for a CS introductory class that taught Java at a local college.
One semester later, and I passed it with flying colors at (I think) the top of the class :D8 -
I learnt a lot of my java background from Minecraft modding. I even went back a couple years ago when I was learning python and used the Minecraft python api to make my learning a little more interactive.
I'm always trying to find cool ways to apply programming to my hobbies, and hacking / modding / breaking the games I play it's a hell of a lot of fun and drives me to learn more1 -
I wanted to create my own Minecraft Beta 1.4 Mod and failed, this constructor stuff was to complicated for me.
So I went to the University to learn Java and ended up by learning it myself, with a lot of help form other students who are way smarter than I am. -
Ok so this has been asked before I guarantee it buuuuuuuut.
I've been meaning to set up a Minecraft server and was curious if any other devRant users would wanting to join in and/or help pay for upkeep?
(Don't need to pay but it would help out if it does get some traction!)
Just comment if you would like to and if I get enough interest I'll look into setting it up :-)4 -
Jesus Christ, Minecraft source code (with forge in this case) is such a clusterfuck of spaghetti logic. It's especially fun when it uses a lot of reflection and dynamic class lookups...3
-
How do you actually accredit code stolen from a project on github? Like it's not used commercially and it's going to be on github, too.
for context: i stole a java class from a minecraft mod. which is about 5% of the source project but makes more then 50% of my project.4 -
I felt inspired when I found out about Minecraft mods when I was in elementary school. I thought they looked so cool. I then went and actually bought a Java reference book but I never made any mods. Because Counter Strike came into my life and well I wasn't too proud of myself. But now I've quit CS:GO and I'm now committed to learning programing and I love it!1
-
So a mate gave me a server to sue for my minecraft server for free rather than paying...
Me being the smart lad that I am made a simple shell script to make some tasks easier but decided to add the rmw and rcw arguments to delete the world and re-create the world respectively...
I feel like you all know what I did...
(Side note, going to be hosting a bedrock edition one as well if anyone may be interested?)3 -
c3r38r170_201 was my original nickname back in 2012. <3
The _201 was later removed because it was too long for some Minecraft servers.10 -
Just started developing a Minecraft server with customer plugins. Reading jabadocs for the first time in my life requires me to extend my mind with modern medicine (at least that is how it did feel for the first hour)
-
This is the single most important question of the year:
Where is a good Minecraft server service that can run FTB Modpacks?
My options are:
1 - A dedicated linux box with Minecraft management software with a port open to the world.
2 - Purchase a vps or something similar to host MC.
I have done 1, and it worked pretty well. It ran on a tiny A8 processor with 8GB ram and an SSD. I see services and they cost like 15 to 20 a month and seem like they are awfully stingy on storage. I can get an enterprise server for 30 a month, but I just asked (my webhost, who I really like) and they said they cannot run Minecraft servers. They said I would need a vps, and they don't have them yet. So I could dig around for a vps service and that is an option. I am really wary of "minecraft" branded services as many are outright ripoffs.
Thoughts? Successes? Just do it myself?5 -
Was about 13-14 years old, on my first laptop, a HP Pavilion G6. I had Ubuntu on it, and tried to write an iso to a USB with dd. Didn't work, so I forgot about it for up to maybe a week, and was playing Minecraft one day when my laptop froze and nothing was responding, so I did a hard reboot.
No operating systems found.
Many tears were shed that day.
Took me maybe 6 months to realize that the "botched" dd probably caused the wipe.
Still don't know why my computer was still running... If anyone thinks that the dd didn't cause it I'm curious what your theory is.4 -
I've been kinda missing linux lately so I've been thinking about dual booting it on my desktop,
And considering I've only mainly used RPM based distros(Mainly RedHat Linux and later Fedora almost exclusively)
I've thought about getting out of my "RPM zone of comfort" and distro hopping for like a year between different other systems and seeing what else is there and how it compares to Fedora.
Any suggestions and what I should try?
I thought I'd start easy and take Baboontu (Ubuntu), mostly because I'm planning on making a Minecraft Bedrock server for friends in the near future which apparently is only available for on Ubuntu so I want to get used to it.
Currently the distros I wanted to try are:
Ubuntu -> Linux Mint(With how much @Fast-Nop has been praising it how can I not try it) -> Arch(Because I wanna see what all the fuss is about) -> Gentoo Linux -> Slackware(Because I recently learned that this thing still actually exists and is still active and gets updated, so wanted to see this Legendary distro)
Any others y'all can recommend?
I'm planning to try and use each distro at least for a month and try to only use Linux, only switching to Windows if there is *no* way to do it in the distro.2 -
just a quick rant to express my HATRED towards java.
Today I played minecraft a bit to release some stree (plis dont tell anybody xD)
FUCKING HELL
1) Java boasts with its portability. Except it doesnt even have a proper runtime for linux
2) ITS SUPER SLOW
3) FAHCKING HELL it's so broken when you start with custom hardware (might be the fault of Gl tho)
^^ those points dont list the horrors of coding in it. I have already accomplished some coding challenges in it, and I know it to be an epitome of misery14 -
Muahahahahahahaha!
I just had the most evil thought.
I could create a mod for Minecraft that is an interface to the devrant API. Then I could get thousands and thousands of Minecraft players to use this mod. It would be a FLOOD of noobs who know nothing about devrant posting on devrant from within Minecraft!14 -
!rant && load('epilogue');
So I saw my little brother yesterday and... Hell, I don't know. The addiction thing is less a thing that I expected, it's just that he can't find anything else to do than going on minecraft multiplayer servers and play, play, play. Gotta be honest, his life outside high school is pretty boring.
I mean, if I were him with this the few responsibilities, I'd be even worst than him, so how can I blame him?
Still, I had a big discussion with him where I tried to make him see what could go wrong if he fails (in a soft way), and helped him with french and english homeworks (french is our native language but a pain in the ass to learn 😁).
I do believe that saying all this "plz don't ruin your life this early plz" stuff had made him react, I just can't tell how deep and for how long. My main goal was to make sure that he won't feel helpless if he ever struggles for whatever reason.
However, since kids don't get shipped with a README.md, I just hope I did the right thing at the right time, and that he'll actually remember this discussion. But fuuuuck, he's 11 years old 😓😓
Side notes, I asked him about being a developer but it's pretty obvious that it was too early to speak with him about this. Might try again next year or the year after.
Thoughts ? I'll try to answee to you all2 -
When playing games I usually get bored after a while. This happens a lot in modded Minecraft for me. I am playing a Minecraft modpack with my kids and I just had the most wonderful thought.
I am going to create a huge "lost" city of Atlantis in the ocean using Minecolonies to populate the city. It will be a technological take on the city with automated boats and machines. Maybe do an Aztec like building structure. I think this would be great fun!
Maybe I won't get so bored so quick. This pack also has the ability to travel to different planets. Maybe I will make this civilization a space faring take on Atlantis.12 -
Was playing Minecraft today and all of a sudden portals started appearing and activating. I went through one of the portals and it led to the Netherlands.
Should I be conCERNed?10 -
What is something people keep saying to you about being a dev that really annoys you?
Mine is that all forms of pixel art must be for Minecraft (Really really really irritating!) -
just so you guys know, I'll be busy with school, and won't have time to be on the devCraft server much.
I trust the judgement of *Mehrsun, dsteiner, *YoungWolves, AlgoRythm, and privateGer. These people get the say when i'm not around.
Thank you all who came those first few days - really l8fted my spirits. i'm happy you all have another way to "socialize" over the net with eachother.2 -
Are there peoppe here who also enjoy playing Tekkit/Technic/FTB? I've long lost my desire to play normal Minecraft but the amount of automation I can build and set up in Tekkit is so amazing that I keep coming back to it3
-
Anyone had any luck running Minecraft servers on DO/AWS/GCP? My current DO Droplet isn't cutting it, and I think I'm noticing the single thread bottle neck of Minecraft.8

Current side project: A Gradle plugin to automate the build.gradle for Minecraft mods through ForgeGradle, Minecraft Forge, CurseGradle, Maven, and soon, Git changelogs.
Needless to say, its coming along swimmingly! -
Don't make a spawner in Minecraft out of stone. Use something like cobble instead.
Why? Because Endermen steal stone.
I have a spawner in my ATM9 world that I made a part out of stone. I got to my spawner and was wondering why it stopped (using special dirt that spawns mobs constantly). I saw there was some light in the enclosure (this disables spawns). Noticed 3 stones missing near the bottom below the dark windows. Found that stolen stone in the mob grinder storage. Replaced with polished granite.
Can't have shit in this neighborhood.
I did have a moment of silence for the Endermen who tried to save their brethren from certain doom. Brave warriors who died for the futile cause.4 -
Ranters, I need help
Does anyone know how can I run something as a systemd service and still have access to the "console" - the input and output of the program, when I need it?
(It is a minecraft forge server and there are multiple people managing the physical server and one of them managed to corrupt the map yesterday by rebooting the machine without stopping the minecraft server... so there comes the need for a service so it can shut down before the machine reboots... but I also need the access to the console of said minecraft server because sometimes when some modded items are misbehaving the rcon will stop responding while the console still works)
Edit: currently I am running the minecraft server in a detached screen (ddg "screen linux" if you don't know what I am talking about)5 -
Minecraft server, I was searching for a developer to build custom plugins so I wrote on a forum and he, Adam, replied saying he knew Java and he'd like to work with me.
I've chatted a lot with him, it's a really good friend!
In the same time I've started learning Java so I could help him, we're a team since 2015 :) -
A few years ago and today very shameful: Griefing Minecraft servers with an own "Griefer-Class". The class was completly enclosed into a simple ArrayList ( with {{ }} ) to hide it in JD-Gui (decompiler many are using) and had a own remote client that could send own as well as server commands via kinda like a telnet connection.
That were times... 😏2 -
Started with the old computer craft mod for Minecraft that put Lua into a form I could understand with clear goals (I was 12 or 13 at the time), and from there learned Java and some web dev tools. Now I'm here writing simple compilers to procrastinate uni work
-
I'm trying to pick up game development as a hobby (im already a full stack software engineer) and ive decided to either do lua with roblox or java with minecraft. im going to start out doing mods and building on top of already existant systems and then venture further if i like it. which do you think i should do? lua or java?5

Managed to finish my rewrite of my Minecraft mod. Man was my code terrible 2 years ago.
For anyone interested in knowing what mod.... it's a silly mod called Meme In A Bottle, It was my entrance to MC modding. -
speedrun.com completely destroyed itself today.
Apparently they thought it was funny to change all kinds of labels, links, images etc. around for April fool's, so now the site became completely unusable. In a game that I identified as Minecraft by looking at the URL, over 10 moderators were added and minutes later, a 5 minute world record of getting all achievements was verified, which didn't even have a (complete?) video. Context: The previous world record was over an hour. I would check what the correct previous time was, but I can't figure out what any of the labels are supposed to say.
I already wrote them a mail saying that they should revert it as soon as possible, because the site is completely unusable, and that they should consider that there are people who don't like being blocked from doing anything just because it's April again. Hopefully they made a backup recently, because they might as well reset to yesterday's data.7 -
Soo I finally uploaded my framework for Java Web last week.
It works great except for forwarding POST requests but meh, I'll fix it later.
Currently it only works for newer Minecraft Spigot version's and BungeeCord, because fucking netty is a piece of shit and Apache commons also... But I'll release a standalone version hopefully next month (maybe even next weekend).
And on the website from Spigot where you can find the link to my GitHub, there were two dicks which tried to steal my code and complained about my obfuscation... The didn't even fucking tried the plugin and gave me 1 star... Fucking pieces of shit fuck...
Anyway: here is the link!

I have been completely out of motivation for around a week now.
Like, there is nothing left.
I've done nothing but playing Minecraft Factions and watching anime for hours in the last few days.
How do I make this stop? Help please.9 -
Minecraft. I ran it in Eclipse debug mode and started messing around with the code without knowing a thing about java.
-
I started with programming through a Minecraft mod called Computercraft. You programmed a computer with lua. Some time later I played with python, and then I was hooked. I am a self taught programmer and have tried many different languages since.

To build a company to develop products designed to improve people's lives. I have interests in video games, mind plasticity, and rpgs. I am not sure if those interests would intersect well, but I hope to make something fun and useful to people. Instead of sucking someone's life away it would be awesome to give it back to them in some fashion.
I think a good example of this is modded minecraft. People have learned programming, and learned some basic problem solving skills playing the game. Stuff that is useful outside the game.1 -
I just started playing terraria and holy shit, it puts minecraft to shame in so many aspects.
It actually makes you feel like the mc devs are some fucking lazy ass morons sitting on piles of cash.
Minecraft is 11 years old and it has 4 bosses and they are all underwhelming pieces of shit, jesus christ.
They can't even make mining fun for fucks sake. Work an half an hour or more to get a full set of diamond only to accidentally lose it to lava in the nether.
They added netherite? Holy shit I can't wait to see the new gear I can craft with it.
Pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe, sword, helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots. Wow, netherite shovel, that's what the minecraft community needed.
How about an actual battle axe, knives? a baseball bat? Spells? Fucking something minecraft, come on, you can't just have 10 weapons man!
The lack of creative content and variety in minecraft is staggering. Adding a block of a different color and texture is not new content!!!
Also, fuck villagers and the sound they make and their faces. Worse character design ever. Not a single redeeming aspect. And fuck their trading system.
The trade system is horrible!!! One item at a time per character. No text from villagers. They don't have names!!!! They don't feel like villagers!!! They feel like robots!!!! Not a single one of them fights back!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK???? JUST ADD ONE THAT FIGHTS BACK YOU MORONS!!! NOT THAT WEIRD ASS GOLEM!!!
AND NO ONE GIVES TOO FUCKING SHITS ABOUT THE GOSSIP SYSTEM MC DEVS. NO OONEEEEE!!!
Terraria is not a perfect game, but it doesn't just try to be a good rpg, it actually is.
Meanwhile every 3d sandbox after minecraft will either be a filthy clone or not exist at all by fear of being labeled as such. Because of that I will keep on trashing on minecraft, even though I still play it a lot.11 -
Talking to friend from school on Discord, and he asked for help with a Minecraft mod. I told him he should learn basic Java, and he said he had taken a couple classes already.(turns out they were small Minecraft modding classes) I was like ok, whatever, and after listening to him work on it, it's now obvious that he knows nothing about Java :/2

I just uploaded the first part of my first programming tutorial, and I want to make sure I’m headed in the right direction and I’m not being overly confusing. The tutorial is unfinished (I’ve really only written the very start) but I think early input would be beneficial.
Some context: LibLib is a library I make for Minecraft mod development, and I’m documenting the GUI framework in it.

Recent VM/Emulation Adventures:
The goal was to get TCP/IP and SSH running on whatever weird VM/emulated machine, and connect to the chatroom at chat.tcp.direct successfully.
Longhorn, somewhere late pre-reset: Crashes right after installer begins "Starting Windows", 0x7b from sum-match ISO. Fail.
TempleOS (well, Shrine, but y'know): Dear god. No. No, I am not writing SSH in HolyC myself *fuck that,* fail.
Slackware: oh ffs i gotta use fdisk to partition this damn thing? and it's not even the good fdisk? Oh, wait... it hangs. Fail.
WinME: shockingly, was *fairly* stable... until it hung up WASAPI and the hypervisor two frames into desktop rendering. Fail.
Mac OS 7: First-boot after install, immediate unknown trap. Just works, eh? Fail.
Amiga: After about 85 resets and 7 hours of constant fighting with WinUAE, I finally got TCP/IP working. (Required 10MB of total RAM and an FPU to connect.) Success!
Win98FE: just... PuTTY and done. Easy. (This was the warmup.) Success...
Other people's achievements so far:
- Minecraft using the new QEMU interface mod thing.
- Hacked smart fridge.
- iPhone, from custom initramfs.6 -
So I've been fiddling around a bit with Minecraft mod packs lately, and I've noticed two things. A. there seems to be no good mod pack launcher/manager and B. Curse Forge sucks and has no public API. Corporate bullshit with FTB and Overwolf... So I've been thinking about building a modding platform and making it open source and accessible for everyone. So a few questions for the ones of you who have done modding, or are just interested:
- Is there already a good platform?
- Would it be feasible with mod pack licences and what not
- Would the modding community welcome another platform?
- Is there a good launcher to integrate with?9 -
Today was fun, i set up a dedicated minecraft server on my old laptop, to increase fps when I play on my shitty phone now it runs real smooth. The server is running on a proxmox vm - ubuntu server.
I wish I knew that fps would be this high , i would have done this wayy earlier, am loving it8 -
Been playing Minecraft for years. I had to watch a video on how to eat cake in Minecraft. I had no clue that you could eat the cake. I always thought that the cake was a lie.
Can someone please make a rap song out of this?3 -
I go through cycles of what I want to work on during my off time. Sometimes I code utilities for video games. Other times I get engrossed in games. One of the games I like to play is Minecraft. Not vanilla Minecraft, but modded Minecraft. It scratches that itch for creativity, fun, relaxing, hanging with people, and technical interest. I am currently playing a medium sized older modpack that has most of the mods I like to play: magic, tech, building tools, dimension building and more.
I am early game on a server with some other people. I already overloaded the server with a population explosion of villagers I am melting down for emeralds. That was interesting. I started automating this and decided to try using ComputerCraft to automate some pieces of this. I stared at the code and just "no, I am not working on my off time". I am going to automate this another way. I used to really like computercraft, but it was code and looked like work. I find that interesting.
Anyway, this is random ass shit I do for fun. Wood house/shack, workroom and ore processing are with no walls, decent small tree farm, and a nuclear reactor in the basement...2 -
I just realized what a horrible fate I escaped several years ago.
I was just finishing bachelor s degree, when I was offered to write my diploma under teacher, who works in Bitrix.
I was given first tasks how to make web site on my own l, I liked it pretty much in the beginning, I installed sql database, made simple registration, login. And then I was offered to try CMS bitrix (which is essentially proprietary local version of Wordpress). With words, that I will see how much easier to work in this way.
I found myself not trusting it, something was fishy. I could not understand why, am I as beginning dev in it, could not use it for free? Why could I not making deving in it, without paying big sum per month(it was big for student-me at least).
I went to work with computer graphics during diploma then, and made minecraft analog in c# (at that time I played minecraft too much)
Now I am working with modern open source world wide supported frameworks. And recently saw a web site made by bitrix devs... They went into production without... https. And I think they are the same ones.4 -
After doing online code exams. I did a job interview for a game company where they asked me to write a spigot and bukkit plugin in Java in advance. I learned minecraft dev, the libraries, Java, and minecraft itself. I built the plugin.
I get to the interview and they tell me that my work was great but they already filled the position.
Omitting school projects because my pay was knowledge which is more valuable than money.2 -
"the fight between tor and regimes that censor the internet is a fight of \"well that's not quite apache so it's tor\""
hear me out here:
then fucking don't be.
Switch it up a little, get creative! No one's gonna expect you to be relaying Tor through like a Minecraft chat or a fucking Doom server or over SFTP or Teamviewer or...
(of course it's not gonna be those protocols but they're already faking Firefox/Apache signatures so do that shit with other protocols)9 -
Spent my Sunday building a container program for the Minecraft Bedrock dedicated server because I wanted to run it as a Windows service so my partner could play our local multiplayer realm while I am offline.
If you just run the standard executable as a service it risks world corruption on exit and requires a restart when changing whitelist or permission settings.
Pretty happy with how it turned out. -
Most of the web stuff I have done in the past have been PHP, Wordpress, cgi, etc. I read about nginx and was very impressed by what it accomplished in the last 20 years. Now I have a desire to play with this tech for fun.
What I want to do:
- create, manage, and launch minecraft servers
- provide a web interface for managing servers (I would like to learn how to make the server use the infrastructure of nginx to be managed like its other services)
- make this packaged so others can use this (probably on github)
I don't know anything about nginx other than it is really really cool, can serve massive amounts of web pages, and can do a whole lot more than that.
Question:
Is nginx suitable for this? Is this a big learning curve? Will I have fun doing this?
I am currently running a multi-instance minecraft server being managed by a piece of software called Crafty Controller. It is really neat. However, I am finding it buggy. I also see that the next version of this software will be behind a patreon. This is really disappointing. So this is spurring me to consider building something fun for myself, and if useful, for others.
I will most likely do very barebones and inflexible web interface that just gets the job done. I know enough to get by. So I assume I have a large learning curve ahead to do this.
Any advice? Is this going to turn into a large time sink?2 -
whats that? where have you been phazor? gaming! i took a break off of coding! and went to play some games!
minecraft 1.17, muck, rust, farcry 5, ailen isolation, bioshock 1, 2 and infinite, even some geometry dash
after that i decided to come back and relearn html and css because if anyone who wanted to hire me i bet they would ask for a website first and see plain buttons and a depressing web page! -
Today I learned that Vim normal mode is Turing complete. Figures. Anything can be Turing complete. Doom can now run itself, Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress are Turing complete, even PowerPoint is technically turing complete. It's only a matter of time before somebody can run DevRant in DevRant.4

i am so angry, i was trying to play multiplayer on minecraft java, and it won't let me join, its literally been like this for weeks and i'm so angry.
i payed 27 usd and it doesn't even work. like what?
i haven't contacted support yet but i'm about to.
thank you for your time, if you have any advice in the comments, lmk. peace.22 -
A bit of an off-topic, but people need to shut up about copyright.
I see people making cool fun stuff all the time, and they start talking about a liscence to use it and copyrights and stuff. Wtf!? I get it if you're making a big commercial project, but no one's gonna steal your cookie clicker clone nor your minecraft mod.
I get it that people want their work to be protected, but ffs it reay annoys me when people bring up legal stuff when mentioning a project that was clearly just made for fun.8 -

I have raspberry pi 3 lying around; at the same time, I want to make a minecraft server to play on with 4-6 friends. Is the pi3 capable of running a server? I tried running it once but it was so slow you could outrun the world rendering with as few as 2 players. Would trying to run it multithreadedly help?
Or should I just resign to a server rental site? it'd preferably be a vps since I really don't like these 'management' sites gaming providers often make - any recommendations that are as cheap as possible)1 -
How meta would it be to create a computer in minecraft, and program it to run minecraft?
I think it's theoretically possible(?) If u got the patience, which you would need loads of.6 -
udemy.com/java-tutorial
I had some very minimal experience with Arduino and Zelio, so I guess I had the basic notions in the back of my mind, but this is where it all begun.
I was asked if I wanted to learn how to code because they needed a developer, so I chose Java because I liked Minecraft and I thought that if I failed, at least I could code some mods.
Spoiler alert: I didn't fail so I didn't have time to code mods... is it really not have failed? -
I develop for a Minecraft server, (Ik, MC is a dead meme, etc.) and I got a snippet of code from a kid one day asking for help debugging. He was missing a square bracket. How relatable.

Bruh, just learn them how a computer works with minecraft. Inverters, And, Nand, etc... can all b made there. From there, u can make flip-flops, u can make registers, adders, multiplexors, demuxs. Ofc makin anything more then a 1-bit, maybe 2-bit machine, would be a pain, and dont get me starting on memory that extends one register. But hey, if u got the patience, u can ofc. Put it together to an ALU, combin all of them with a PC to an CPU. Ofc, you got no ROM or RAM, but hey, atleast u've built the hard part.4

Minecraft modding, in general, is badly documented. The documentation for the major modding APIs, for instance, is probably SOMEWHERE, but it's hard to find and often outdated. I only found one decent-looking updated tutorial, and that didn't contain most of the information I wanted. I really don't understand how the major mod makers actually manage it.5

Playing Minecraft 1.12.1 on my private server, everything going fine. Time for lunch, I close the game and come back later.
Restart the game, try to connect to my server again:
"Failed to connect to server
java.lang.NullPointerException: group"
Won't connect anymore now.
WTF is wrong with you???3 -
Fuck windows for not implementing a software backend for modern OpenGL
I just wanted to run minecraft and my game, i have to install a linux vm to use mesa for OpenGL because my computer is from 2008 or something and doesn't have any form of gpu except for the chipset,
I know that mesa dlls are available for windows, but for some reason they will randomly work sometimes and sometimes they won't, because apparently i need to take ownership of system32 to replace default openGL dlls and those take precedence no matter what3 -
Notch, the creator of Minecraft was my biggest influence.
He did what he loved to do and inspired me to do the same. I discovered I wanted to start programming because of him. -
So there's this issue involving Geckolib models and having parts animate in java code, so for ~3 months I put "heads of mobs don't rotate to look at other entities" as a nofix issue and leave it be.
3 months later I discover that it is possible, and it wasn't in Geckolib's docs, but rather the example mod's classes this entire time. Right in my face.
Document ALL of your shit, please. -
Learning Spring is like learning Tekkit for Minecraft; it's just a whole other new confusing terminology with alien concepts. You have to get into it once to understand it.

I've been a windows user for my entire life (or at least since I had a computer).
Lately I've been contemplating buying a macbook.
Can someone give me advice/ pro's/ con's...
What I use my personal laptop for:
- programming (VSCode mostly)
- watching TvShows / Movies
- Playing minecraft (mc + mods will be the most heavy games played)
- Surfing the web
Why I'm thinking of buying a mac:
- mostly the battery life TBH
- compatibility with my iPhone
- (possibly for later) iPhone emulator (maybe XCode), It might be annoying to download some programs like Android studio, but trying to get a Mac OS VM with XCode on my windows is nearly impossible.2
