Back in the 90's you had to pay for browsers like Netscape (it was called a navigator but same thing) but after Microsoft released IE for free with your windows copy in 2002 it crushed Netscape and nobody used it anymore (the graph below).

But! Netscape wouldn't give up and before the company died after it made legal accusations against Microsoft and Bill Gates and made them pay for that they did, but Netscape was too far gone and already were falling apart they decided to make a self detonation (I guess that's what they thought being in that tight corner) and they released the code as open source which would later get taken by Mozilla and be the code base for Firefox.

Now look at how much better Firefox is and how nobody uses the shitty IE!

We've all had shitty jobs at one point or another, maybe some of us already had software engineering experience while having to work in a different field for a variety of reasons.

At one point(during my second year of school) for various reasons I had to work in retail. For those that know, retail can be a soul crushing experience...the trick is not letting management to convince you that it is an actual good job, it is not, and I have respect and sympathy for everyone currently working in it. The mind numbing retarded customers that we get are absolutely fantastic in every sense of the word.

My position in retail was as a phone salesman, for MetroPCS (which for all of y'all european ninjas is one of the low end phone carriers here in the U.S) and the people that we get as customers where I live are normally very poor which apparently in Mexican culture stands for annoyingly ignorant (I am Mexican myself, so I can really vouch for this shit)

One day a customer came in telling me that there was an app that he was using that kept giving him troubles, it was a map application for truck drivers. Now, obviously, this had nothing to do with my line of work(phone salesman) and as such I normally tried to explain that and let them be, but I imagined that it was a settings issue so I reluctantly agreed to help him. I explained to him that the app was no longer maintained and that the reason for it was probably that the developer abandoned it and that he would just have to look into the app, upon closer inspection the app itself was nothing more than a wrapper over google maps with trucker icons and a "trucker" interface, he was using the app as a GPS navigator and he could as well just have been using google maps.

The conversation was like this:

Me: Well this app is no longer supported, it will probably be taken off the google store soon, you can look for something similar or just change to Google maps

Retard: What? no! I came here in order for you to fix it, Metro needs to fix their own apps!

Me (in complete disbelief): We have no control over third party apps, and even for the ones that we provide the store has no control over them. But this app is not ours and so we can't really do anything about it.

Retard: Well WTF should I do? I have been having many issues with youtube and spotify, shouldn't Metro fix their Google store?

Me: Those apps are not ours.....wait, you seem to believe that we own youtube and spotify, those are not ours

Retard: How the fuck they are not yours! its your phone isn't it?

Believe me, it's so much easier to keep on top of shaving body hair than taming face fur. Especially because your facial hair is, you know, on your *face* which means it's very visible. You can't hide it if you mess up. Unless you decide that wearing a balaclava is a good idea when going outside, like when going grocery shopping. Generally that isn't received too well though.

So there seems to be a lot of discussion lately about the closing of background apps on Android. Now, I expect a decent amount of disapproval from this, but I happen to be one of those people BECAUSE I've experienced that it drains my battery more to have them running.

Since I genuinely trust y'all quite a lot compared to how much one should trust the internet in general, I'd like some more proper and reliable info (or as reliable as it can get) on this. If I'm indeed wrong I want you to convince me.

So, in C#, are there any tips or guidelines as to how to write "clean" multiline strings? I mean, imo it doesn't look as neat when the code looks like:

With the first line sort of hovering on the side. What I'm used to is with Python where you can just:

Second line.
"""

And use the '\' to escape the newline, but that obviously doesn't work in C#. Can anyone point me in a direction to start looking? The docs are a bit confusing and not very beginner friendly. :/

I've kind of run into a wall when it comes to programming lately. I'm following this course on Udemy for Python, but the next section (that I need to do to be able to continue) uses (outdated) bokeh stuff, and I don't know enough to be able to figure out how to get the same output without much hair-tearing and frustration.

To clarify, the videos uses bokeh.charts, but then there's a note added that says to use bkcharts, which is still outdated, so it doesn't help at all. I did contact the course tutor about it, and he is aware of it but he's got a lot of stuff going on, so I don't know when he'll have time to fix it. In the meantime, I'm stuck and severely lacking in the intellectual stimulation that is programming. :(

I -have- been trying to work on independent projects, but my problem is mostly that I just don't seem to be a frontend kinda guy, so I end up with only halfway-finished stuff. Does any poor soul here have advice on where to look, or (less likely) even have time to explain some stuff?

My hate for word editors burns with the intensity of all the fires of hell, and almost even rivals my hate for M$...

Long time, no rant, even though this isn't very much of a rant. Just started the second course that follows the one I've ranted about previously (thankfully with a different school and teacher this time) and THE TEACHER KNOWS PROGRAMMING!! BLESS!!!! I'm so happy I could cry.

This course is in C# instead of C++ though, but I still know more of that than I did C++ when I started the other course.

Yesterday was the first day of the course and he responded within an hour, explaining how mathematical calculations with chars work. (Which is unfamiliar to me still as I've mostly coded in Python.) Even though I'm not very familiar with C# yet I'm so looking forward to this course.

When you're doing a generic programming course, and you're passing shit left and right with flying colors until you hit the one assignment where you have to write in human-speak...

It really sucks when you realize that you're gonna end up despising a programming language just from having an extremely shitty first experience with it.

About ten weeks ago I was forced to, despite that I was SUPPOSED to be able to choose the language myself, to learn C++ for this course when having literally not a single fucking bit of experience with it whatsoever. And that's pretty soon after already having a beyond shitty experience with the very same school AND the same teacher. (The school I study at "rent" courses from other schools, this is one of them.)

I have the final exam on Monday and I'm allowed to have a book on C++ with me to use as reference, as (I'm pretty sure) I won't have internet access on the computer I'll be doing the test on. I ordered a book with express shipping to be here during this week, Friday at the latest. Never arrived. Called customer service at the book store and apparently it was supposed to have shipped yesterday but hadn't and they didn't know why (fucking awesome girl at the customer service btw, 11/10 quality service). So we cancelled the order, sure, we get the money back, but I still won't have a reference for a language I barely know at all. (No need to mention libraries, did that, dead end.)

Oh, and about that school and that earlier experience I spoke of, because if their inability to do their motherfucking jobs, earlier this year I ended up struggling with money for a couple of months. I really want to fucking strangle these assholes and have them pay my fucking bills to cover the shit that THEY caused.

TLDR; I'm gonna end up hating C++ because of shitty fucking teachers at an even shittier school.

I need some help with advice regarding getting new headphones, as my current ones are quite literally about to fall off my head. Thing is that I have a hard time finding what I want, and even then be able to determine stuff based on reviews.

My current ones are a pair of Turtle Beach Ear Force Z60, which is my first headset to have surround sound. They also sit very comfortably on my head without really pressing on my ears at all, and the audio when playing games is nice and clear. Unfortunately that has now set the bar pretty high when trying to find a new pair.

I tried out a pair of HyperX Cloud II, but I can't configure the settings and the surround sound doesn't seem to work at all (there seems to be a "gap" between one o'clock and three o'clock, so to speak, as well as between nine o'clock and eleven o'clock). I tried listening to a 7.1 audio clip, but the only ones in the right positions were center front and left and right fronts. The left and right sides, and left and right rears were all at the center point. And besides that the audio is unbalanced and just... not quite muffled, but not clear as with the old ones.

Thing is also that I don't know crap about audio stuff, like if it's got to do with me doing something wrong in terms of drivers or hardware or something, or if it's actually got to do with the headphones themselves. I've tried to find info but there's just none to be found, it seems, at least nothing that works. :(

Currently I'm considering trying out another pair from Turtle Beach, but it's so hard to trust the reviews. I mean, like the Z60 has pretty halfassed ratings, but I personally like them a lot. :/

Does anyone have any advice at all? Whether it's recommendations of headphones, or ideas on things I could try on my end to make things work.

AND, side note; I don't care for any comments along the line of "surround sound is bullshit, just stick with stereo, it's better", because 1) I don't agree nor do I care, and 2) it's unconstructive as shit.

In Xcode you can't have your project file view AND compile errors/warnings view visible at the same time. You always need to switch between them because they are different tabs in the left panel called the Navigator.

This lack of customizability is the worst part of Xcode.

I have a couple of small ones, but one that stands out is actually fairly recent.

It was an independent project, more for practice than anything, but it involved fetching daily horoscopes from an RSS feed and showing it to the user upon request. I first just made it as a command line program,using some new modules I hadn't used before, and seeing everything work smoothly and neatly printed out made me super excited.

Not too long ago I even made a proper GUI for it using Tkinter, which also works nicely. :) Nothing so far has beaten that first excitement upon finishing the command line one, though.

So I've just about finished a simple application practice project, it's just a program that will show you today's horoscope for different signs from an RSS feed, but I'm wondering if or how I should include disclaimers/credits for things like fonts (The two fonts I use are both open source.), and/or things like the tools used for building it (Written with Python and Tkinter in Atom.)? Do I add it under a "Help" menu or something?

What are the rules and etiquette? And is there anything specific I should include in a separate file? This is also kind of my first proper project.

This summer I'm taking a brief course on programming, very generic and mostly just to get it officially on paper, and as of what I can tell a lot of it will be stuff I'm familiar with. Basic syntax, loops, logic, good practices, etc.

However, I get to choose the language I get to work in myself. I assume they have a set of the most commonly used ones (couldn't find a list of them though) and I was wondering if anyone had advice on which to pick?

I already have a base of decent JS and Python, but I feel like it might be good to pick something other than Python? Because even though I love it to bits, I do realize that it's not the optimal language in all situations. What I'm pondering is Java or one of the C-languages, but again, I'm not one of the pros here. Any recommendations?

So many times I've wished that I had something like a teacher or a mentor to ask all the questions I have with coding and programming. Because of this I'm slightly afraid of trying to get into a more serious project in case there are important things I should know that I haven't learned yet. Learning completely on your own is hard. :(

😢... Built a mobile app with React Native, the app implements Navigator api in JS to get coordinates. It works perfectly on 6.0 and below, but fails on 7.0 to be specific, Nokia 2 (it returns the same coordinates regardless of the location). How to go about this? What other library can I use to get coordinates?

PS: I have checked the permissions and they are set.

Kind of a followup on my earlier rant, it seems like my "teacher" doesn't even really know C++. He replied to me that "the code doesn't work", which is probably because the code needs the compiler flag for c++11 (I barely even know what I'm talking about here), which he would've known *if he looked at the error message*?!

First, a little bit of background info: I'm currently studying a programming course (Where I was *supposed* to get to choose language myself, but was forced to do it all in C++ which I had no prior knowledge of, but that's a rant post of its own.) and the final exam is coming up. I'm allowed to bring with me a book on C++ for this, so my question was if there are any good recommendations?

Primarily I'd prefer something that is as close to a physical copy of documentation stuff as possible, since that's what I'm going to need the most.

The books I've been looking at so far (and that look the most promising) are "The C++ Standard Library" by Nicolai M. Josuttis (ISBN: 978-0321623218) and "The C++ Programming Language" by Bjarne Stroustrup (ISBN: 978-0321958327). Thoughts and/or opinions? :/

I need some help with TCP connection related stuff in C#. I need to figure out how to make a very basic connection between two endpoints and manage to send data between them. In my case it's a "server-side" program and a "client-side" program.

My problem is that I don't know how I go about making the client program listen for response after sending data. Do I need to have a TcpListener on the client side too? In which case, how do I use it?

Basically, I know how to make the client toss the ball and how to make the server catch it, and I think I know how to make the server toss the ball back, but I don't know how to make the client catch it. :/

So, apparently my Play Store settings get reset when I restart my phone, so Google decided to update Google Keyboard to Gboard for me (and god-fucking-dammit, that shit is absolutely useless to me). I can find older .apks on websites like APKmirror for Google Kinstall but they won't install, saying that "it seems like the package is corrupt". I'm not sure exactly why this might be happening, but according to APKmirror’s FAQ it might have something to do with cryptographic signatures or that a newer version is already installed on the device. Gboard is disabled and I assume that should be enough for that, and I don't know if it would even detect it as the same app in the first place, so my best guess is that it’s got to do with the former which is why I'm turning to you guys.
Does anyone have advice for a solution? I don't have any problems getting another keyboard either if needed, but I would really like something that both has separated layouts per language, as well as a similar swipe-to-type function, since excessive tapping really aggravates my CTS. :/ Any suggestions?
