TLDR: I wrote one of my firsts codes to help my father. Was really excited after it worked, nobody cared. F*ck them (not really).
So my father comes and says he needs me to help making a simple presentation. Just a title and slides with images. It seemed to be an easy task so I'm like "sure, why not?". So I told him to email the images and I would have the presentation made in no time. The next day I recieve like 30 mails containing from 4 to 10 photos of boats (yes, boats). I stay chill and have the brilliant idea of automating the process with python, just to learn a bit more.
I took some to read the documentation of the modules I was going to use, then write a simple code and bam! In 3 hours I have a presentation with images in it. I open it, every image was 4 times the actual slide and all of the images were randomly rotated, it still was the most rewarding moment I've had in months :') I wanted to show it off to my brothers, so they came to my desktop, saw it and all I recieve was a "cool". Not a good "cool", a "meh" kind of "cool". So I thought it was because of the size bug.
Fastfoward some hours, now every image gets scaled into the slides prefectly, in the correct angle, etc. I tell my dad what I made and he says "yeah sure, the problem is that I need you to give them to have subtitles". He wasn't even impressed. My heart hurt a bit.
I could totally automate the subtitles too (and did it), but what hurt the most is that nobody cared for what I was so pationate about. I'm so fascinated with coding that it replaced all my gaming habits, and now all I do is learn. I want to dedicate a good portion of my life to this but at that moment it seemed nobody in my family cared about it. So this rant is for all those f*ckers that I love but don't know how much my code means to me.21 -
I had a weird dream last night where people communicated by using log statements.
Like if I wanted to say something very loud I'd think Log.wtf("WTF!") and it would appear in front of me like subtitles. Log levels were equivalent to tone level.
The scene was basically a bunch of people with log statements of various levels in front of them and their lips moving with no sound.
I think I need a vacation.2 -
So... I was watching this ad of this University offering a software course... Can you notice something weird about the code? Hahaha
The subtitles say: "I'm a Programmer"5 -
Friend of mine at college is struggling with his cpp class.
Have been helping this guy since forever with it, he is not a coder by any means nor does he display any sort of affinity or "talent" for it. But he does make up with intense dedication. Still he knows that he will not be pursuing a career in software engineering, this is just a class.
The thing is, he showed me a video of his class. The instructor is middle eastern with a thick accent. Accent so thick I need subtitles for this motherfucker.
He has learned more from me that he has at uni. And at my day job the interns say the same thing. I love teaching and far prefer it over working on projects.
This week we have a meeting with the head of the i.t dptmtn at school as nd I will try to pitch myself in as a faculty member by popular demand.
I would love to teach, i have experience in the field and learn a lot from going over shit as an instructor. I can make one go from wtf is JS used for to handling promises and writing Angular in days.
I really want to teach man.7 -
WebVTT: Can I copy your homework?
SubRip (.srt for friends): ehm...ok, just change it up a bit so it doesn't look obvious you copied.
WebVTT: don't worry.2 -
So my parents were at this meeting were they should watch a video, person one wanted to play the video from his computer but guess what happened:
Person one has windows on his computer. Windows wants to update. Person one clicks on update in three days.
Windows be like 🖕I'll start updating now.
Person two decides to play the video on his computer instead.
He has windows too. It could've worked fine, but a cable is missing or something.
Person three has a MacBook. Person three tries to play the video. It could've worked fine but he doesn't know how to enable subtitles and without them they cannot watch it.
So they ended up watching the video a day later after the computer of person one had updated itself.2 -
When a coworker thinks that you're friends because they watched The IT Crowd with 1337 subtitles on3

Fuck. Medium.
Fuck all the articles on it too.
Do you seriously think I am so fucking dumb that I cannot keep my attention on a paragraph of text without at least one image for five seconds straight?
Three quarters of your shitty fucking article are images. They don't even relate to a damn thing in the article. It's just a fucking stream of random image subtitles.
It's just as bad as people randomly mashing pictures they found via Google search into their Power Point presentation because they actually have no content, breaking all copyright laws in the process, so they can stretch their mindless bullshit as long as humanly possible.
FUCK. YOU.6 -
— I got bored and built a CLI tool for fetching movie subtitles yesterday night.
— What for?
— Well, to get movie subtitles.
— Alright...
...
—... I, I built it...3 -
Me: I need a subtitle for the header on my website: “Our Team”
Chatgpt: Sure, here are good subtitles for “Our Team” header on your website:
— Meet the Experts
— Our Skilled Professionals
— Talent at Your Service
…
Me: Make it a little bit lengthier:
Chatgpt: Sure, here is a more detailed subtitle option for the “Our Team” header on your website:
{{was actually expecting 2 to 3 lines but dude proceeds to write a full page long content explaining “Our Team”}}
I feel like this dude gets orgasm when it sees the word “lengthier”.2 -
Downloaded 130gb of movie subtitles zip files.
If I find some power deep in my heart I would normalize data and launch training on generative transformer to see if it produces decent dialogues.
It will probably stop on planning phase because I’m diving deeper towards depression.11 -
I found Firefox to be a winner today. Chrome was flashing the screen in full screen mode when the subtitles would update for JoJo’s bizarre adventure. Firefox fixed it yayyy1

Howe much your dev env takes ?
(Fair warning, I use VS with open solution and SQl acess and Azure managment and "quick c# thing to do a thing like copy subtitles".
I still think it's a lot.4 -
How is it possible my netflix password got hacked when I never used it anywhere else and it's randomly generated? I saw some weird logins with random subtitles. Google password manager told me it's in some data breach, how do I find out from where? Haveibeenpwned didn't find anything. 😐7

Hey guys, i made a program years back and just refactored the thing and gave it a nice GUI. I made it mostly so I can use it in my daily life which I do but now I might release it as open source and give it to some friends. But I’m facing A problem i never faced before...giving it a name. Need some help 😂
Basically, i have tons of series, so i created it to maintain a nice naming convention for the videos but obviously can work for any file list.
- it renames them in a couple of different ways (replacing string occurrences in the file names, appending - prepending strings, completely renaming it alphanumerically. Anyway I use those features most (OCD i know)
- it also grabs subtitles for movies and series (parses its way through subscene and yifisubtitles until it gets to download the zip file and extracts it for me) .
- It also plays random episodes for me when im confused what to rewatch ( just opens a random file in a directory u point it to)
So any name suggestions ?1 -
based on my previous rant about dataset I downloaded
https://devrant.com/rants/9870922/...
I filtered data from single language and removed duplicates.
The first problem I spotted are advertisements and kudos at movie start and at end in the subtitles.
The second is that some text files with subtitles don’t have extensions.
However I managed to extract text files with subtitles and it turned out there is only 2.8gb of data in my native language.
I postponed model training for now as it will be long, painful process and will try to get some nice results faster by leveraging different approach.
I figured out I can try to load this data to vector database and see if I can query it with text fragment. 2.8gb will easily fit into ram so queries should be fast.
Output I want is time of this text fragment, movie name and couple lines before and after.
It will be faster and simpler test to find out if dataset is ok.
Will try to make it this week as I don’t have much todo besides sending CVs and talking with people.2 -
Part 3
https://devrant.com/rants/9881158/...
I dropped subtitles and started extracting audio from movie, after that I use whisper to convert speech to text.
I parse srt from whisper, adjust timestamps to get >= arbitrary amount of voice seconds. I put text to vector database with timestamps and movie file name.
I query database by ex. “I don’t know” and extract first n results, after that I walk trough movies and extract parts with found text.
I normalize and merge parts into one movie.
Results are satisfying so now I decided to try to find a common dialogue that I can watch by combining multiple persons speaking from multiple movies.
Might also try to extract person from one movie and put it to other movie.2 -
I've always wondered how come in certain videos that have embedded subtitles, usually tv shows, they don't get detected by mobile players, but do on PC?3

As some of you (I'm certain), I have a plex server at home. Hosted with an "old" core i5-4670K, 16GB ram, no GPU. (Ubuntu 20).
My question. HOW, HOW THE FUCK :
I can play HDR and DV videos via plex TV app.
I can play HDR via my S10 fucking phone !
I cannot play nor HDR nor DV since last update on Xbox X... It's the ONLY use I have for that console. If my TV can do better, wtf I'm supposed to do with that console ? (Any way to put plex server on it ?)
My friend can play my 4k HDR video on apple TV via remote connexion..
What's wrong with Xbox X ?
RHAAAAA.
Also, FU all ripers using PGS format for subtitles without SRT option.
Also FU sony for not allowing TrueHD via ARC. (AT least on my A/V reciver)
Also fuck me for buying xbox.
Also fuck the worl just because.
Ok, I feel better. Thanks you all.4
