How to waste 7 hours of your time:
1.) Install Visual Studio 2017
2.) Install extensions for it
3.) Wait for it to destroy itself with updates
4.) Reinstall everything11 -
Online course with ASP.NET 4.
Professor is a loser, convincing students into using shitty 2010 software which will not install and is no longer supported.
>> Sends mass email explaining how to use VS2017
Met with praise. Fuck outdated teachers and technology, truly a shame.5 -
Okay guys, this is it!
Today was my final day at my current employer. I am on vacation next week, and will return to my previous employer on January the 2nd.
So I am going back to full time C/C++ coding on Linux. My machines will, once again, all have Gentoo Linux on them, while the servers run Debian. (Or Devuan if I can help it.)
----------------------------------------------------------------
So what have I learned in my 15 months stint as a C++ Qt5 developer on Windows 10 using Visual Studio 2017?
1. VS2017 is the best ever.
Although I am a Linux guy, I have owned all Visual C++/Studio versions since Visual C++ 6 (1999) - if only to use for cross-platform projects in a Windows VM.
2. I love Qt5, even on Windows!
And QtDesigner is a far better tool than I thought. On Linux I rarely had to design GUIs, so I was happily surprised.
3. GUI apps are always inferior to CLI.
Whenever a collegue of mine and me had worked on the same parts in the same libraries, and hit the inevitable merge conflict resolving session, we played a game: Who would push first? Him, with TortoiseGit and BeyondCompare? Or me, with MinTTY and kdiff3?
Surprise! I always won! 😁
4. Only shortly into Application Development for Windows with Visual Studio, I started to miss the fun it is to code on Linux for Linux.
No matter how much I like VS2017, I really miss Code::Blocks!
5. Big software suites (2,792 files) are interesting, but I prefer libraries and frameworks to work on.
----------------------------------------------------------------
For future reference, I'll answer a possible question I may have in the future about Windows 10: What did I use to mod/pimp it?
1. 7+ Taskbar Tweaker
https://rammichael.com/7-taskbar-tw...
2. AeroGlass
http://www.glass8.eu/
3. Classic Start (Now: Open-Shell-Menu)
https://github.com/Open-Shell/...
4. f.lux
https://justgetflux.com/
5. ImDisk
https://sourceforge.net/projects/...
6. Kate
Enhanced text editor I like a lot more than notepad++. Aaaand it has a "vim-mode". 👍
https://kate-editor.org/
7. kdiff3
Three way diff viewer, that can resolve most merge conflicts on its own. Its keyboard shortcuts (ctrl-1|2|3 ; ctrl-PgDn) let you fly through your files.
http://kdiff3.sourceforge.net/
8. Link Shell Extensions
Support hard links, symbolic links, junctions and much more right from the explorer via right-click-menu.
http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/...
9. Rainmeter
Neither as beautiful as Conky, nor as easy to configure or flexible. But it does its job.
https://www.rainmeter.net/
10 WinAeroTweaker
https://winaero.com/comment.php/...
Of course this wasn't everything. I also pimped Visual Studio quite heavily. Sam question from my future self: What did I do?
1 AStyle Extension

2 Better Comments
Simple patche to make different comment styles look different. Like obsolete ones being showed striked through, or important ones in bold red and such stuff.

3 CodeMaid
Open Source AddOn to clean up source code. Supports C#, C++, F#, VB, PHP, PowerShell, R, JSON, XAML, XML, ASP, HTML, CSS, LESS, SCSS, JavaScript and TypeScript.
http://www.codemaid.net/
4 Atomineer Pro Documentation
Alright, it is commercial. But there is not another tool that can keep doxygen style comments updated. Without this, you have to do it by hand.
https://www.atomineerutils.com/
5 Highlight all occurrences of selected word++
Select a word, and all similar get highlighted. VS could do this on its own, but is restricted to keywords.

7 Viasfora
This ingenious invention colorizes brackets (aka "Rainbow brackets") and makes their inner space visible on demand. Very useful if you have to deal with complex flows.

8 VSColorOutput
Come on! 2018 and Visual Studio still outputs monochromatically?
http://mike-ward.net/vscoloroutput/
That's it, folks.
----------------------------------------------------------------
No matter how much fun it will be to do full time Linux C/C++ coding, and reverse engineering of WORM file systems and proprietary containers and databases, the thing I am most looking forward to is quite mundane: I can do what the fuck I want!
Being stuck in a project? No problem, any of my own projects is just a 'git clone' away. (Or fetch/pull more likely... 😜)
Here I am leaving a place where gitlab.com, github.com and sourceforge.net are blocked.
But I will also miss my collegues here. I know it.
Well, part of the game I guess?7 -
Me: Hey Visual Studio 2017 could you please....
VS: Unknown Error
Me: What about an Update?
VS: Unknown Error2 -
For fuck's sake man! I know you are an inexperienced junior dev/student but estimating 3 months at 6 hours /day for slightly modifying some C# code is just ridiculous.
I may have never touched anything .NET before but the modification required just 3 fucking lines and I did it in a day. In three months I would have finished the whole fucking project.
PS: VS2017 (RC) was quite lovely.8 -
Visual Studio (Code)
-Cross-Platform App Development
-Cloud Integration
-Extensions/Packages
-Lightweight (Installer VS2017)
-Many of Langs (C#, js, Python, F#,...)
-Data Science Tools built in

porra; caralho; toma no cu.
this fucking shit xamarin. I wish the ass who programed the xamarin vs2017 integration to go fuck off.
srsly, I just want to fucking code this fucking fucker VS2017 keep shitting all around me
first I was gonna install it. didn't install because no memory left. fair enough, my fault there.
cleaned 35 gbs.
finish installing VS, with xamarin. FIRST GOD DAMN TIME I create fucking project, 2 fucking errors and 3 warnings. I DIDN'T EVEN TYPE A COMMA.
ok, tried fucking it. it seems to be conflict between version of Android and xamarin forms. fucker you it shouldn't be like this. anyway.
tried downloading the updated Android version.
it failed at 80%! what error you ask? missing fucking space ok, fuck that thing is huge, ok, my fault again. uninstalled all programs I was not using, all projects I'm not current working on. more fucking 30GB free. tried again. ANDROID IS TOO FUVKING HUGE CAN'T INSTALL IN 30GB!!!
Ok. instead of updating android, gonna downgrade xamarin, can't downgrade. ok gonna remove and install an early version.
unistalled. CAN'T FIND XAMARIN DLLS.
I was like, fuck this project, gonna start a new one. ok, all seems fine, for some weird reason. Except no. I try adding a new page, ops, APPARENTLY VS2017 CAN'T LOAD A GODDAMN .XAML
Ok, I can create a .cs page. done, except now I get a fucking timeout error. fuck.
I search the internet for a workaround, see a guy saying I could manually add a .xaml + .cs by creating this files and then adding them to the proj file.
did it. I go again, everything seems fine. but now I can't freaking reference the damn page.
I'm fucking losing my mind here.
In the mean time I have to turn in this project at the end of the week AND I CAN'T FUCKING OPEN THE GOD DAMN FREKING PROJECT PROPERLY!
FUCK. MY. LIFE.
FUCK XAMARIM AS WELL
FUCK VISUAL STUDIO
FUCK MICROSOFT
FUCK THAT DAMN SSD
FUCK THAT BOSS WHO THINK THAT A 128GB SSD IS ENOUGH
FUCK IT ALL...15 -
!rant
Found out about JetBrains student program and asp.net unix support and now I am the happiest person on earth!😊🙂😋 -
Im forced to work with c++ on windows for a course.
0) c++ is fucking unusable without a central repo for managing dependencies. Maybe im just too used to maven but you shouldnt be downloading dll files in 2018.
1) visual studio can go suck a fat one. I got a fairly fast pc and it takes fucking forever to load anything. For comparison, eclipse with all my plugins (and i have a lot) loads in ~10 seconds, vs2017 does in 35.
2) why the fuck is there no cross platform compilation for c++? Its supposed to run on everything right? Whats so hard about porting a fucking linux compiler so i dont realixe i have .exe files when i want to work with my laptop on the bus?
3) c++17 (? Or whatevers the newest) syntax is like a deep barf on a hot summer day after eating a whole watermelon. Its fucking unreadable and autopointers simply dont work. And its not even my lack of skill this time, its the code that the other members used and it worked for half of them.6 -
Vs studio 17, Y U NO COMPILE MAH C++? It's literally one tiny program, with only one "Rectangle" class. g++ likes it and compiles it clean, why can't you be more like him? :(11

I'm very angry at C# 😡 (and java in some degree). Recently I decided to create huge project in C#. (It is my favorite launguage now because of great VS2017 its features, lib and such). I used windows form app in order to make pretty gui for this program. Everything worked fine, but i decided to implement some 3d rendering system in order to display grafs in 3d, oh how foolish was I.
Ok so what are my options?
1.DirectX9 -> abandoned by microsoft, they say its ded so nope.
2. DX11 -> great! i even can use sharpdx or simpledx to use it! oh wait, what is that? INVALID DX CALL
(in demo code)Damit!
3.OpenGL -> obsolete, lib non existent.
4. Library that comes with .NET -> WFP only sorry!
(i found some dogdy tutorials on yt for dx11 but they need .net 2.0 really?) 😐
In that moment i decided to swich to java. (because Java c#_launguage = new Java("microsoft");)
After 1 day of instaling eclipse and 2 more to install the newest jdk MANUALY i realized that java isn't that easy to use as C#, because:
- no dynamic type-> HUGE PAIN i cant use a single list to store everything buuuu!
-console? yes but its burried inside some random lib and its not consistent with every java version!
-gui editor similar to VS one? oh you need to create it from scrach!😫
Well at lest i can render things. So maybe java will render suff as another tool in my app? Nope pipes NON existent, we need to use sockiets! (unity pipe plugin was easier! worked but it was SLOW)
Ok so after few more days of struggling i managed to render simple graf using directx9 in my original C# project that works fine.. 😥 I only need to create a lib to wrap in and we are done!
Why can't companies create a laungage that will have ALL the features i need? Or at lest give me something like pipes that work in every laungage that will be helpful!
I know it is sometimes stressful to be a dev. But when your program works 😀 that is great feeling! Especialy when you learned to code yourself like me 😁. (student before a university, that lives in small abadoned town)6 -
I see people posting their stickers here, so here is mine. I think it totally represents me. What do you guys think?6

Monodevelop.
I don't really know why, maybe the interface, but today, after uninstalling VS2015 and installing VS2017, I wanted to edit a script in Unity and when I clicked on it, Monodevelop started. I was like OOOH NOOO!! PLEASE NO!!3 -
Yesterday I told an intern that was supposed to be shadowing me that he'll need to download visual studios with apache Cordova plugin for multi platform app design. I gave this assignment to him first thing in the morning (around 9:30 am) and told him to head home for the day thinking I was giving the kid a break to download and make sure the build was proper and to play around with it maybe. I check my inbox this morning to find that, alongside numerous expletives, this intern has quit as of 3:40 AM last night. I... I didn't see that one coming.4

Sigh.. I have both vs2013 and vs2017 open on the same project.
In 2017 an extension doesn't work.
But 2017 is easier in some things, like managing nugets.
All my coworkers use 2013, so I have to make everything works in there. And I have to use the one broken extension there.2 -
fucking VS2017,
It takes like 1 minute to refresh stored procedures in the server explorer, It is so annoying especially if you need to constantly add new stored procedures.
and dont get me start on DBML at least once a week that shit fucking decided to crash VS2017.
Maybe I need to download more ram 🤔🤔🤔5 -
Continuing my saga, I'm now tasked with creating a .NET Web Form app and then converting it to ASP.NET Core as a proof of concept.
Problems:
- Web Forms are not supported in Core and are not planned to
- After 3 weeks I still do not have a work laptop
-- My personal laptop is a Chrome book running Linux
--- I can't install VS2017 on my laptop, I need it for this project.
- Working from home, where I have the resources available, is apparently against company policy (I'm not 100% on this yet, can't find it myself)
- I'm likely going to be sent back to the offline computer lab at a different location to work on this, where I doubt the programs/packages are installed
Perfect.4 -
1. Closed a solution.
2. Opened same solution, other branch.
3. "Get Latest" on the whole solution.
4. Build solution => Build errors (probably because some project needed be built before another).
5. Right-clicked a project => Build.
6. Nothing happened and VS2017 became completely unresponsive. Has been like that for like 10+ minutes now.
Nice? Nej, bajs.3 -
You can make WSL and VSCode fight over how a csproj should be written. VS2017 doesn't care and runs no matter who was previous.
-
Visual Studio and its compatibility with Linux applications.
I don't know if I'm the only one, but this is my setup:
- Visual Studio 2017 on Windows 10
- Ubuntu 18.04 subsystem on Windows
I just can't do any Linux coding in Visual Studio... it is using my subsystem as a Remote Compiler and debugger, and a simple Hello World program does build and run successfully, but EVERY SINGLE LINE HAS ERRORS! It can't find stdio.h! Not a single include file works! They get auto-completed so it knows where the files are, but apparently opening them to see all the methods is too much for Visual Studio! I'd say the problem has something to do with IntelliSense since only inside the IDE my code has errors, compiling (which happens on the subsystem) works like a charm.2 -
Godot Engine - great open source alternative to Unity, powerful with basically anything you need for game dev and with great community,
VS Community and VS Code for more serious things, because they're pretty pretty powerful and extendable.
Oh and Krita is kinda cool, but I'm not much of an art guy -
Wow, I'm such impressed by the power of Visual Studio with Team Collaboration, DB Management and this impressive packet manager... But it's like "don't try to understand, just code"
-
Guys, please be mindful of your dependencies. I just ran "npm install" and whole hell broke loose.
Imagine having to install 3.6GB of VS2017 C++ junk, just to make the damn node-sass compile.
Obviously the module needs to build on my machine, but one would expect that a nodejs module would not depend on msbuild. Funny how nature does that... -
I was halfway through repairing my Visual Studio, when it suddenly stopped without providing any info on why it happened...1
-
Does anyone else have the problem that the XAML design window in VS2017 kind of freezes all the time? Can't zoom in/out or click on any element in it. Not that I develop anything in the design anyway, but clicking on an element it's a comfy way to find the corresponding XAML code.
-
I upgraded from VS 2017 to VS 2019 and I am quite impressed with the UI it is so less cramped and clustered than the older versions. Overall just has been a better experience minus some questionable build&compile&run times. But I am glad I upgraded now3
-
Linux: sudo apt-get install IDE dev-libs etc
Windows: install wxMSW, extract compressed binaries, set environment variables, set preprocessor/project settings in VS2017, set search directories, etc.
Why is it so ANNOYING to set up a simple GUI development library for C++ on Windows? -
I've created a folder called 'config' in my c# applicaiton. (VS2017). It considers it a 'hidden' folder, like obj and bin. Still it works. Am i doing something illegal? That is, Visual Studio wants to handle the content of 'config' directly?4
-
VS2017 fast load, breaks our project in 7 different ways AND compiles much much slower. Which idiot gave the green light for public release especially with multiple ms blog posts promoting it3
