Almost every really successfully project...is open source.
Some Examples:
- Linux
- PhP
- Node.JS
- The Chromium Engine
- All the Apache Stuff
- Unreal Engine(WAS closed source)
- nginx
and so many more
Open Source is the best way to build known, stable and useful software30 -
One day, someone at Google decided that what their search engine was really missing was a dice rolling tool, complete with text that says 'Rolling...'
Stocks are up 600% since then.10 -
interviewer: What can you tell us about the Unity 3D engine?
me: well, i can tell you that there is no such thing. the engine is called Unity. Unity3d.com is just the website. it's a good way of telling if someone doesn't know what they are talking about.
interviewer:😐....9 -

When I was in sixth form, I taught my friend how to create empty files using Python. He soon learnt that you could get around the quota enforcer this way.
He was curious to see what would happen if you filled the entire drive to maximum so he ran the code for an ~8TB file. Before he could delete it, he was told to log off. Nobody could save their work and backups weren't performed for 24 hours.
It's safe to say they weren't impressed when they found this.10 -

Microsoft is an operating system company having a search engine (bing) as a side product.6 -

And their budget... $75

Just decided to try brave browser. Not to actually try it out but to see if it calls home or not and what the default search engine is.
As for a browser which advertises itself as very privacy friendly, I would expect it to not call home and have at least duckuckgo or searx as default search engine.
5-6 calls home every damn time I open it and google is the default search engine.
How the fuck would you call that privacy friendly?!26 -

I tried to learn Java by watching tutorial videos on YouTube. After falling sleep on chapter 3, the next day I started programming in JavaScript.

Personally, I already see all the desktop environments implemented on top of a HTML engine.17 -
I wrote a node + vue web app that consumes bing api and lets you block specific hosts with a click, and I have some thoughts I need to post somewhere.
My main motivation for this it is that the search results I've been getting with the big search engines are lacking a lot of quality. The SEO situation right now is very complex but the bottom line is that there is a lot of white hat SEO abuse.
Commercial companies are fucking up the internet very hard. Search results have become way too profit oriented thus unneutral. Personal blogs are becoming very rare. Information is losing quality and sites are losing identity. The internet is consollidating.
So, I decided to write something to help me give this situation the middle finger.
I wrote this because I consider the ability to block specific sites a basic universal right. If you were ripped off by a website or you just don't like it, then you should be able to block said site from your search results. It's not rocket science.
Google used to have this feature integrated but they removed it in 2013. They also had an extension that did this client side, but they removed it in 2018 too. We're years past the time where Google forgot their "Don't be evil" motto.
AFAIK, the only search engine on earth that lets you block sites is millionshort.com, but if you block too many sites, the performance degrades. And the company that runs it is a for profit too.
There is a third party extension that blocks sites called uBlacklist. The problem is that it only works on google. I wrote my app so as to escape google's tracking clutches, ads and their annoying products showing up in between my results.
But aside uBlacklist does the same thing as my app, including the limitation that this isn't an actual search engine, it's just filtering search results after they are generated.
This is far from ideal because filter results before the results are generated would be much more preferred.
But developing a search engine is prohibitively expensive to both index and rank pages for a single person. Which is sad, but can't do much about it.
I'm also thinking of implementing the ability promote certain sites, the opposite to blocking, so these promoted sites would get more priority within the results.
I guess I would have to move the promoted sites between all pages I fetched to the first page/s, but client side.
But this is suboptimal compared to having actual access to the rank algorithm, where you could promote sites in a smarter way, but again, I can't build a search engine by myself.
I'm using mongo to cache the results, so with a click of a button I can retrieve the results of a previous query without hitting bing. So far a couple of queries don't seem to bring much performance or space issues.
On using bing: bing is basically the only realiable API option I could find that was hobby cost worthy. Most microsoft products are usually my last choice.
Bing is giving me a 7 day free trial of their search API until I register a CC. They offer a free tier, but I'm not sure if that's only for these 7 days. Otherwise, I'm gonna need to pay like 5$.
Paying or not, having to use a CC to use this software I wrote sucks balls.
So far the usage of this app has resulted in me becoming more critical of sites and finding sites of better quality. I think overall it helps me to become a better programmer, all the while having better protection of my privacy.
One not upside is that I'm the only one curating myself, whereas I could benefit from other people that I trust own block/promote lists.
I will git push it somewhere at some point, but it does require some more work:
I would want to add a docker-compose script to make it easy to start, and I didn't write any tests unfortunately (I did use eslint for both apps, though).
The performance is not excellent (the app has not experienced blocks so far, but it does make the coolers spin after a bit) because the algorithms I wrote were very POC.
But it took me some time to write it, and I need to catch some breath.
There are other more open efforts that seem to be more ethical, but they are usually hard to use or just incomplete.
commoncrawl.org is a free index of the web. one problem I found is that it doesn't seem to index everything (for example, it doesn't seem to index the blog of a friend I know that has been writing for years and is indexed by google).
it also requires knowledge on reading warc files, which will surely require some time investment to learn.
it also seems kinda slow for responses,
it is also generated only once a month, and I would still have little idea on how to implement a pagerank algorithm, let alone code it.4 -
So tomorrow I have to explain to my non-technical principal that the "game engine" I say I'm going to make in my senior project proposal is in fact not a car engine in a game. And I also have to explain that a mechanic would not be an ideal mentor for this project.3

The Turbografx 16 (or Turbografx PC-Engine in Japan) has the most amazing fucking expansion port I've ever seen. Every bus is exposed, plus sound out and IN (unused by anything ever made for the thing), composite out (not included on the console itself, but 3rd-party addons allowed it), VGA out (!!!) and CPU HALTING/CLOCK CONTROL were included over this fucking thing.
You can even power the system with 5v in through the expansion port and bypass the power switch with it.
Info and diagram:
https://gamesx.com/misctech/...
Example:
To get composite out, send pin A22 out and ground the ground wire of the composite to any ground.
For VGA, it's a little more complex:
VGA1 to TG-A23, VGA2 to TG-B23, VGA3 to TG-C23, VGA9 to TG-A2, VGA13 (and VGA10 if you want compatibility with older displays) to TG-B11, VGA14 to TG-A10, VGA5-8 (and 10 if not hooked to TG-B11) to TG-C2
(VGA numbering from Wikipedia diagram)
this thing's fucking coolrant holy fuck this is cool turbografx 16 expansion port heaven expansion port console mod turbografx pc-engine1 -

I want to get into game dev, but don't know which engine to choose, Unreal or Unity. Both would be free, because Unreal is free for students. I already know C++, but I think it depends more on the API than the language itself. Maybe I would like to create games for Android too.
Which one would you recommend? Any experience?6 -
when Unreal Engine became free to use my Uni refused to install it repeatedly claiming that "no one wants to use it" although basically every student asked for it. I learned Unity instead. Dont get me wrong, Unity is great, but I still havent really got the hang of Unreal and I just cant find the time to dive in.
This is especially frustrating when I see alot of Unreal jobs in my viscinity.8 -
I just set duckduckgo as my default search engine. And then I got to know about duckduckgo bang. It's really cool4

What game engine would you recommend to an indie developer? The type who can't afford a fucking server to run the bloated and buggy unity editor but is actually a developer so isn't afraid of typing.
I've had enough of the improper sandboxing (will crash bc of game scripts), tempfile-based crash-unaware instance tracking (won't restart afterwards) and lack of UI scaling (seriously, that's like accessibility/retina support basics) that is the unity editor. If they had command line tools I'd use them happily.12 -
What a shit day, wasted 5 hours because the fucking temperature sensor of this goddamn turbine engine won't work, which in turn prevents the engine from starting up at all.
Why does shit fail whenever you need it the most? We had 45L of kerosene we had to burn, and now we'll have to move it somewhere else for the whole summer instead, and send the engine away to have it fixed (which means a whole lot of time and money wasted).
Fuck's sake, the one thing that had never let me down so far... we even made a brand new test stand just for the occasion :(5 -
https://youtube.com/watch/...
I just watched this video about Edge and it gave me a different perspective about the product.
One thing I liked the most and want to share with all (most of you might be aware of it already, but still) is the web browser rendering engine.
The browser's user interface just complies HTML, CSS and JS at run time, rest of the processing is managed by the rendering engine.
Okay so what excites me more about is progressive web apps. This is something really coooool.
Curious readers navigate here -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
So something like devRant can be accessed directly as an desktop application without having to install any particular app using the rendering engine.
There is more to it here. devRant app runs as a stand alone app and not in Edge (or any other browser) with its own custom UI interface.
Fucking cool. No need to open the browser at all or install more and more applications worrying for updates. Moreover be updated all the time while accessing the dynamic content with custom user interface.
I am not sure whether Google Chrome or Mozilla have this kind of feature but if Edge has it, I am looking forward to explore more of it.2 -
We were having a 30 min discussion about differed tasks and how to kill children spawned by a specific parent if the so said parent is killed, and if in a situation where keeping a parent alive is irrelevant if a child fails, should the child kill the parent and the other children?

Or should I concentrate on killing the tasks instead? Which one is easier?3 -

Another small update on my games modding stuff...
Currently building a command line tool to pack the game data, currently have a working sprite packer and am able to actually read data from the packed file and export all images byte for byte... Holy shit I might be able to actually do this!

Decided to change how my game engine asset loading and sorting systems work, giving up on making everything editable JSON files just so it's easier to manage and actually build things.
Currently trying to work out a way to load all of the packages sprites into 1 singular asset bundle and here is the evolution so far...
Revision 1: Compiles a single 328KB PNG into a 24MB file in 190 seconds.
Revision 2: Compiles same image into a 24MB file in 5 seconds.
Revision 3: Compiles into a 16MB image in 4 seconds.
It's not much but it's a start :-D
(Still haven't built a loading system so who knows if it works yet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)3 -
Hey fellow devs, my friend showed me this Godot game engine. Ive spent 15hrs over the weekend building strategy game client which consumes my api server. Ive done a lot! OK guys, I need your expertise on the dreaded WordPress.
(My question is at the end, skip to it if you don't care about a bit of context)
I want to do some research on a WordPress, regarding ergonomics, load speeds, and stuff, to try to convince its owner to switch to an handmade website. I care because it implies some of my close relatives.
I've been told mutliple times that WordPress brings good SEO, so I tried to find some info on how it does it. I found nothing which cannot be easily achieved, in hand made website, by "good practises" and common sense, and a lot of things which can be easily fucked up just because you think WordPress handles it for you.
So, is there anything that WordPress does regarding SEO which doesn't imply you being cautious about it and could be a lot more difficult to implement/manage in hand-made websites?3 -

Just had a very productive night with @hahaha1234 and @jappe. Revisited a lot of code, made it simpler, faster, storage efficient and future proof. Our smart search engine is getting somewhere now. Tomorow we will be continue building ofcourse, but first: time to sleep! It is 3:45AM and after that, go running on the beach in Zandvoort.1 -

Inspired by my professor’s rant about people don’t know how to google stuffs, I made a scriptable script to solve all those issues. It’s a super smart script that shows detailed step by step solution of how to tackle down a problem
For those who doesn’t know, scriptable is a free app for Apple basically writing scripts that can be used, in JavaScript.
Here is the repo:
https://github.com/txstc55/...
Please try it out, you will love it, I promise
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for the ending of any relationship after using this script3 -

Godot Engine - great open source alternative to Unity, powerful with basically anything you need for game dev and with great community,
VS Community and VS Code for more serious things, because they're pretty pretty powerful and extendable.

Hoy to all!
I need advice for NNs.
I wanna make a chess engine that uses an NN. (see collabs)
I want the NN to output a probability for each move.
However, i dont know what data to train the NN with.
If i train it with the moves from an engine, it simulates an engine and that sucks.
If i train it from games, i only see one move, and thus, cant train the other moves.
My thougt is, that maybe, i let the NN play an entire game and if it loses, it adjusts itself somehow. But how?
If you wanna contribute, email me :wittmaxi@outlook.de3 -

Just finished the prototype of my HTML5/Canvas implementation of a visual novel engine. The actual script exists behind the scenes on a REST like web service (to act as a sort of drm). The assets for the game and UI layouts are stored in what I call a shit file. Their is s a utility called the shitpacker that creates a shit file from a directory structure. The name of my engine is the Pyst engine. Pyst stands for Python Stub...as the game script is actually a subset of Python that I created. Eventually I will probably move Pyst to JS so I could hypothetically support offline games.

Hi Devs,
I've to solve a real time issue in my site. I've set of devices returning Machine parameters but some different key names.
i.e. Eng_speed = Engine Speed
Engine Sp = Engine Speed
Both devices giving data with different labelling. I'd like to predict the correct word using NLP and Machine learning. Since I'm new to NLP stuff. I'd like to hear your thoughts on how you solve it.
Thanks for your help12 -

So, i want to dive a bit into game development. But firstly without a game engine. Just some small projects, like a short 2d game, to get knowledge.
Any suggestions, to do so?
Which language, ide, framework etc.?
Thanks12 -
So once again, I'm planning for a new website I'm developing, a little side project. I tend to put pen to paper and map out what features I want to include and see where that goes.

As a professional googler (who has recently included the skill on his resume too), I wanna ask you all, what googling tips and advices you got you wished others that you're working with knew?
I'll start with one simple and clear one myself:
Start with a wide search, then narrow it down with including and specially excluding keywords. don't start too specific as you might not be familiar with the language of the subject and the way it's addressed.9 -

Trying to get Unreal Engine 4 to work on my Linux with a C++ Project had me shouting 'I HATE YOU' at my computer frequently today. I finally figured out how to compile the code for the editor to open it properly (no thanks to their forums (or the actual editor)). At least it's not C# though 🤷6 -

Hey Game developers,
I'm making a roulette game for a client. He wants that the motion of ball in wheel should look completely random but it should fall into desired number i.e. the outcome of roulette wheel should be predetermined, not random. Any idea how do I do that?6 -
I find it odd that I've gone from primarily doing c++ and c# in Unity in the first year to doing blueprints in unreal in the second year. I have nothing too much against blueprints (except for the crappy, broken engine it's a part of but that's for another rant), but blueprints to me seems like the dummies guide book you read before going to the challenging stuff later on when it comes to programing. I just find it a bit backwards they'd introduce that after the challenging stuff.1

This is not a rant. Rather just a question or an ask for advice, as I have seen a lot of people talk about web development around here. I am planning to create a website for my search engine. I created a Rest API for my VPS so I can do http requests and retrieve some links for certain key words. But I need some good ideas to do this from a website. As I am not sure what would be the best way to do http requests. As far as I know it's possible with Js and PHP, but I am not sure what's better, more secure or convenient? So here I am to ask you guys, especially those who have experience with this, what I should consider to do.
Oh and please forgive me my limited knowledge about Js and PHP 😅😊3 -
My experience was very recent. I was working on my game engine, Pillar3D, and realized that the setup allowed it to be automatically multithreaded with little to no concern about deadlock or race conditions. All based on the assumption that individual levels don't talk to each other, and that moving entities between levels could be done between frames. I can even track about how much work each thread has to do and use that to distribute levels among the threads. Now I can do things like force UI trees to exist in their own level and get fantastic multithreading.

Another reason why google sucks! Earth Engine Python Api deprecated.
This has been my day:

How often should I worry about keeping an engine, non-enterprise, at arms with the existing frameworks if all I need is an event scheduler and animation possibility?
I have the need for task, animation and secure through the use of executables. Why should my engine be larger than 3mb in code? -

Hey guys, I am getting into game engine development and I wanted to start off with a simple 2D engine. But I don't know which source is the best to stick with.
So if anyone who has any experience in this field could tell me what course/tutorial they feel is the best to begin with, it would be really helpful.
My programming knowledge is strongest in C++.
I would also like to know as to how long would it take for a normal C++ dev to come up with a half decent game engine?4 -
Does anyone know where I can find a nice tutorial on how to expose a c++ class to the V8 engine? I want to be able to call create objects, call their methods and modify their variables from a js script.
Most results on google are very outdated (5-6 years old) and I want to use a relatively new version of V8.
Also tried v8pp with V8 6.9, but many things don't work as they're shown on the github page.3 -

Hey!
I am trying to learn creating games for android (+- 0 android expirience).
I figured I could use GoDot for it's awesome pricing (free, no strings attached).
I've done few minor things, but, to be perfectly honest, I'm fed up of GDscript. I just internally hate it more every single time I touch it, so recently I stopped attempts to learn doing games for droid/iOS.
I'm looking for free alternative to godot, preferably no strings attached, but wahtever... Here is what I need:
- I prefer code, but doing stuff in GUI is fine, but stuff like making level etc, preferably in UI
- C++ derrived syntax (ex. c# etc. c++ is fine too), no BS like some wacky workaround to do basic shit like 2d array....
- easy android/iOS export (like in godot, one day I was attempting to hello world in android and compiling for first time... was quite an advanture)
- objects
- some easy way for restfull apis
Good to have:
- ability to test project without android VM
- observer pattern (signals/slots)
I don't care what structure it's made, for me milion of scenes on one screen was extremly coutner-intuitive but meh, whatever. As long as it's possible to learn, it is fine.
Can devranters help, please?
Thanks,
peace.16 -

I want to make a fancy 3D game for an assignment. Would it make sense to separate the game content completely from the engine? The way I imagined it, there would be a game folder with all the content in it (textures, shaders, scenes, scripts etc...) and the engine would "load" this folder, construct the scene and run the game. I was even thinking of using a lightweight scripting language for the game logic, like javascript, so I don't have to make an api and compile DLLs, and the engine (written in c++) would communicate with these scripts.
Is this a good design, or should I just put everything in one project so both the engine and the game logic compile to a single exe?11 -
