I really have this fucking love/hate relationship with application security.
For a lot of stuff that I write, user input has to be validated, authentication is required and so on and I do love looking into that, pentesting my own applications to death and thinking about the security architecture of the application itself.
But, sometimes, I just want to focus on the fucking features and then it annoys the living hell out of me that securing an application can take so much time and brain power.
Yay and grrrr, I guess.8 -
So you think it's bad when your friends, family, strangers and others ask you to fix their phone or computer is bad when they hear you're a programmer, IT or good with computers?
You think it's bad when they ask you whether you're hacking when they see code or terminal on your screen?
You think it's bad when they ask you to fix a cracked phone screen because you work with computers?
Well, think again because today my teammate was asked to fix a vending machine by X from another department because, according to X the vending was not accepting X's other dollar bill. The first dollar bill was accepted so why wouldn't it accept the 2nd one? Because the 🤬 dollar bill is crumpled. That's it.
What wows me is what made X think this is an IT issue.
According to X.... "because it has power, lights and touch screen so IT can fix it That's what you guys do, right? You can fix anything".
Me: wait!?, what?, uhhh..., are you serious? Wtf? Why? Grrrr4 -

Reporter: That's it for today's devRant episode. Back to you, Steve.1 -
Subaru's Symmetrical AWD is the best thing in the world at the moment. Also, warning: !dev
Tl;dr: I'm getting another RPi3 thanks to awesome engineering.
Got a couple of inches of light snow here, and on my way home I came across a GMC Sierra dually stuck at the bottom of a moderately sized ditch. Naturally, I stopped by in my Forester and offered to tow it out.
With my 20ft tow rope stretched to its full length I was barely touching the road. He signalled that he was ready, and I gunned it. Slowly but surely the truck crawled out of the 6ft deep trench. She crested the hill with much applause (from me and the driver of the truck). As a thanks, he gave me $30.
Looks like I'm gonna get a new Raspberry Pi to play with. I think I'll turn this one into a countertop MAME arcade machine.
And for those of you wondering why I'm praising Symmetrical AWD as opposed to AWD in general, here's a quick lesson in drivetrains:
Most all wheel drive cars power the front wheels most of the time. This saves on fuel economy. The thing is, power is only transmitted to the rear wheels when the front wheels start to lose traction. At that point you're already screwed; only two wheels at any one time are putting useful power to the road.
Symmetrical AWD systems, like you'll find in all Subarus and most performance cars, distribute the vehicle's torque eaqually front-rear at all times. So instead of waiting until the front wheels start slipping, all of the wheels are powered right off the bat.
To make this more devvy: grrrr php, vim is best, I configured the tab key to enter four spaces, js has too many damn frameworks and they're still being pumped out faster than rabbits in a bunny farm.3 -
Battling our contracted IT guys about forcing ESET antivirus onto all of our machines. Just looked at Task Manager to find that it was using 1.6+ GB of RAM on my machine! grrrr !!!!!7

I am well done, burnt and carcinogenic. The constant pressure to always produce, always post a profit, always increase, always commit, always stand-up and succeed is fucking exhausting and ultimately and totally unsustainable.
There are never any fallow years anymore, or days of rest...our dirt is dying...and the earth is weary and worn out. Antartica is getting green...grrrr, and my head is melting too.
Why the fuck can't we slow down a little bit?

Used to create a web app that is practical and usable in a hackathon. Lost badly due to bad presentation, while the winners only created gimmick stuff, good for the eye, unusable but they had better presentation. Grrrr!4

Some days it feels like visual studio is conspiring to break my sanity.
Compile.... 5 errors
Clean & recompile .... 12 errors
Open file that contains the errors
Error report clears all errors ...
Compile .... 12 errors .... But still bloody runs
Stop program .... No errors
Grrrr
Compile .... No errors
For god sake .... Which is it ... Do I have errors or not FFS3 -

After reading this post, I am so confused what to with this life. I thought of becoming a full stack developer. After reading it, I am thinking, is this I want to do with my life. How many libraries, frameworks, technologies and languages should I learn.
Getting confused what to do now. Grrrr...2 -
Aaarrgghh! Stupidity of some webdevelopers! Ordering new battery on e-shop and got in my mail devilery report from one freemail service. Checking what kind of spam it is and those lazy bastards are taking my full order and sending it with my e-mail addresses in From to their freemail account. Which correctly rejects it based on SPF as the freemail suprisingly does its job well. Who the hell thought this would be a good idea? Grrrr!2

Being dependent on people who are lazy to document but knows everything about the app you are working on is a pain in the neck. Have tried bugging them to do documentation, but no win... Grrrr.....1

I love JS, but I hate browsers.
Universal ES5 way to initialize a date from a input value in "dd.mm.YYYY" format:
var split = input.value.split('.');
var from = {};
from.day = parseInt(split[0]);
from.month = parseInt(split[1])-1;
from.year = parseInt(split[2]);
var myDate = new Date(from.year, from.month, from.day);
// if a timestamp format is needed:
var myDateTimestamp = +new Date(from.year, from.month, from.day);
No, I won't use moment.js or other bloat-braries just for fucking dates.1 -
Grrrr, at the end of the day just before weekend trying to arc land something so you can start fresh the next week. Boom phabricator server down. Unexpected reply.

At my work we have this most generous benefit, free lunch and one hour lunch break. There's one little catch though, our lunch coupons only apply in one of two restaurants. Which one, depends on weekday. Mondays and Thursdays we go to this worthless place called Kvarter 5. Today our one-hour break was a complete waste of time as the food never arrived. GRRRR!!! I get grumpy when I'm hungry! :( I waited patiently for 50 minutes and then gave up, demanding my lunch coupon back, and had lunch at Sagulthai (thai buffet, tasty food, ready to grab with no need to wait). Some of my colleagues staid until the food eventually arrived. They told it wasn't worth the wait. The salmon was burnt and the chicken salad rather bland. Heck no, from now on I'll skip free lunch two days a week. There are so many better restaurants in town, like all of them2

Why does Chromes sometimes suck balls when it comes to caching and reloading updated files on the backend web server?
Sometimes I get stuck in a state where I don't get the whole F-ing site refreshed... until I open a new virgin browser who's never been touched by the web code.
Why can't refresh .. .just REFRESH?

Customers CEO insists we need to start the 3 weeks to deliver crunch website project by having the hottest UX design on the planet done by a professional UX specialist specializing in hotness who might charge a lot and take a few weeks and leave us no time to deliver said hotness. Grrrr.
I felt like Sirus Black as a dog bouncing of the chest of the werewolf.
When I explained in full why it's a great idea to have a great UX concept, the project is an education website, for the government, and it's WCAG AA. Balanced against all the reasons that we had more urgent things to look at with such a short timeframe they insisted "The UX Guy" will save us. Dear fascist bully boy. I am a UX guy! I may not be "The UX Guy" but I remember when Javascript was for popups and the extent of most peoples PHP was sending forms via anonymous SMTP. I bet the design will look something like the CNN website or Apple.com. Both bastions of web accessibility standards. Grrrrrr.
