Dev: Hey our current server is starting to chug a bit. Can I get approved for $1200 additional spend to double the speed?
Manager: *Sharp inhale*. We need this project to cost as little as possible, we really can’t justify spending any additional money for any reason right now.
*2 days later*
Manager: YOU ARE APPROVED FOR $100,000 TO IMMEDIATELY IMPLEMENT SOMETHING RELATED TO NFTs IN ANY OF OUR APPS. THE BUSINESS NEEDS TO EXPAND INTO THE METAVERSE ASAP IMMEDIATELY. I NEED AN ETA BY EOD AS TO WHEN THIS CAN BE ROLLED OUT.
Dev: …16 -
An intern I was supposed to lead (as an intern) and work with. Which sounded kinda crazy to me, but also fun so I rolled with it. But when I met her I quickly found out she didn't even have a coding editor installed and when I advised one she was "scared of virusses". She had Microsoft Edge in her toolbar, and some picture of a cat as a background. We were given some project by our boss, and a freelance programmer helped us set it up on Trello. Great, lets start! Oke maybe first some R&D, she had to reaeach how to use the Twilio API. After catching her on WhatsApp a few times I realised this wasnt gonna go anywere. After a few weeks of coding and posting a initial project to git I asked her if she could show me the code of the API she made so far..
She told me she was using the quickstart guide (the last 3 FUCKING weeks) which contained some test project with specific use cases.
The one that I did 3 weeks ago that same fucking morning.
AND SHE WAS STILL NOT DONE...
A few days later I asked her about the progress (strangly, I wasn't allowed ti give her another task bcs the freelanc already did) and guess what... She got fking pissed at me
Her: "I will come to you when im done, ok?"
Me: "I just want to see how it is going so far and if you are running into any problems!"
Her: "I dont want to show you right now"
She then goes to my fucking boss to tell him I am bothering her.
And omg... Please dear god please kill me now...
Instead of him saying the she probably didn't do shit. He says to me that the girl thinks im looking down on her and she needs a stress free environment to work in. She will show me when its done. ITS A FUCKING QUICKSTART GUIDE YOU DUMB BITCH.
He then procceeded to whine to me about the email template (another project I do at the same time) which didn't look perfect in all of his clients.
Dont they understand that I am not a frontend developer? Can you stop please? I know nothing about email templates, I told you this!!!
Really... the whole fucking internship the only thing the girl did was ask people if they want more tea. Then she starts cleaning the windows, talk to people for an hour, or clean everyone's dask.
all this while I already made 50% of the fucking product and she just finished the quickstart tutorial 😭. Truly 2 months wasted, and the worse thing is I didn't get any apprication. They constantly blamed me and whined at me. Sometimes for being 3 minutes late, the other for smoking too much, or because I drink to much coffee, or that I dont eat healthy. They even forced me to play Ping Pong. While im just trying to do my job. One of the worst things they got mad at me for if when my laptop got hacked bcs it was infected with some virus. He had remote access and bought 5 iPhones 6's with my paypal while I was on break. I had to go home and quickly reset all my passwords and make sure the iPhones wouldnt get delivered. strange this was, this laptop I only used at the company. So it must have been software I had to download there. Probably phpstorm (torrent). Bcs nobody would give me a license. And the freelancer said I * have to *.
the monday after I still had to reinstall windows so I called them and said I would be late. when I came they were so disrepectfull and didn't understand anything. It went a little like this:
Boss: why u late?
Me: had to reinstall my laptop, sorry.
Boss: why didnt you do this in your own time?
Me: well, I didn't have any time.
Boss: cant you do this in the weekend or something? Because now we have to pay you several hours bcs you downloaded something at home.
Me: I am only using this laptop for work so thats not possible.
Boss: how can that even be possible? You are not doing anything at home with your laptop? Is that why you never do anything at home?
Me: uhm, I have desktop computer you know. Its much faster. And I also need to rest sometimes. Areeb (freelancer) told me to torrent the software. He gave me the link. 2 days later this happends
Boss: Ahh okeee I see.. Well dont let it happen again.
After that nobody at the compamy trusted me with anything computer related. Yes it was my own fault I downloaded a virus but it can happen to anyone. After that I never used Windows again btw, also no more auto login apps.8 -
I know a guy who writes everything in Haskell.
He started learning it because his parents got him into a math school (and math schools in Russia use either Python or Haskell), he liked it, but later he dropped out. Today, apart from Haskell, he only really knows HTML and CSS, and maybe some JavaScript.
He writes backend AND frontend in Haskell and uses some kind of JRPC stuff to manage all that. He told me that his life is a pure heaven. He IS RELEVANT (!!!!!!), his apps always run without bugs (because in Haskell you can mathematically prove that there are no bugs), they are performant, faster than C (because you can't write a complex enough app in C that will be as efficient as compiled Haskell, because it's you vs compiler). He doesn't have any problems in life whatsoever. He never got burned out, he never got anxiety or depression. He doesn't act pretentiously and stuff, he's just a normal person who rarely even mentions that he can program.
Science says it can't be done! You can't only know Haskell and be a relevant software engineer! You know what, he didn't _know_ it was impossible. He's like that grandpa from a meme, he got Alzheimers, but because of it he forgot that he had Alzheimers, and now remembers everything.
The fun thing is that he looks like a typical gopnik, with adidas suits and stuff.
What a gem of a person.26 -
Wtf is facebook doing. I noticed that instagram updated through facebook app installer instead of play store. Went to see all apps and these thre ware there out of thin air. They warent there when i bought the phone, but they are system apps. So i must have gotten them through an update. Fuck this17

For the love of god, I spent 2,5 hours debugging why Minecraft from the windows store doesn't work...
The game just shows a red message telling you it didn't work.
I checked the logs, nothing just warnings
I re-installed the game, nothing, same error
Updated java and all parts of the store, nothing....
Obviously I had to install Something called the "xbox identity Provider"... You know... On a PC... For a distinctly PC game to work... Installed by the store... And the provider is also on the store... But it doesn't auto-install with the game
Ever since you migrated to the Microsoft Auth the login experience is awful (I ranted about that already)
How about you do the bare fucking Minimum of an User experience and Install the fucking dependencies when I re-installed something your fucking store??!!!
The fucking bare minimum that every package manager ever created fucking has as a basic requirement?! Are you kidding me?
Rename your fucking services so they make sense and please don't waste everyone's time by having both shitty logs and no dep management for your own apps... Fucks sake16 -
after publishing a few apps, building some websites, developing some basic operating systems, participating in a summer learning program at google and having got a job managing the computer science department’s website, today i start my intro to computer science class.

People on dating apps say they are very pissed off and frustrated when they’re ghosted.
As a developer you get eager calls from recruiters talking for hours. They say I’ll catch up with you first thing in the morning. An HR manager says I’ll get back to you in 14 hours (in 14 hours?? very precise). Even you get a contract offer from a manager who is rapidly contacts and convinces you.
Than you hear nothing, you are left on read.
“Professionals” communicate in that way. They are also getting paid whilst taking your time. What can you say to random people behind nicknames?
I don’t know what I would feel if they get back and I’m zombied. I really feel like unmatching meh.7 -
#fuckapple for holding back the open-web. Most folk don't know that Chrome on iOS is just Safari with a skin; neither Google or Apple want you to know that.
If you hate web-apps on iOS, that is Apple's intentional doing. Apple cannot allow a bug-free and modern browser to run on their iOS devices, else they lose their 30% tax + dev fees cut. There are literally so many crippling bugs in iOS Safari that it HAS to be intentional.
There are email exchanges between Phil Shaffer and Steve Jobs from years past, where Phil didn't believe Apple could continue to gouge users 30%. He argued the open-web would make native apps largely redundant, and so to stay competitive, they'd need to drop the store fees to something reasonable. I suppose Steve Jobs saw a different solution -- just impede browser development.
As someone who develops free and open-source apps, I believe I am doing the world a favour by not supporting a native iOS app. When users complain about missing features in the web-app version, I tell them to take it up with Apple or buy an Android. Guess what? They sometimes actually do just that.
Join me if you have the balls. Tell Apple to FUCK OFF the only way they understand -- threaten their bottom line. At the very least, you'll never need to touch XCode again if you do. If time is money, that alone will make you wealthy.10 -
Hired a new BI developer. She tested reasonably ok in SQL, and certainly showed good strengths in visualising data, plus had a good attitude in the interview. We hired her. She broke her laptop the first day. We got her another then she complained the camera didn't work but didn't realise the lever in front of the camera was to move the privacy shutter off and on.
Assigned her some work of taking queries that are used in a BI tool that targets the transactional database directly, and re-jigging them for Snowflake which we're using as a data warehouse now, aggregating all our data into one place. Yet, she's struggling to understand why the SQL query she's pasted in doesn't work as-is.
I go over it again; the source schemas and tables are this, but in Snowflake we've named them this. She then bemoans how much work that is to change them all - I say use find and replace. She then struggles with Snowflake syntax errors and asks for a guide on T-SQL to Snowflake. I show her Google and say "this is what I did when I hit these problems - search for 'Snowflake equivalent to T-SQL getdate()' or 'how to get current date in Snowflake' but she still doesn't understand. I ask if she's every had to work between T-SQL and MySQL or MySQL and PostgreSQL or Oracle and so on and she says yes. I say the syntax isn't the same, is it? And she goes oh, now I understand.
She scored reasonably in her SQL test but I'm now concerned there's something fundamental missing in her grasp of SQL. I gave her a detailed demo of the tools, I explained in the interview and on her start about our move to a data warehouse for all our apps, and put her through some training plus gave her time to work through our Confluence pages - not expecting she'll remember everything, but more to ensure she recalls they exist and what the general contents are.
Anyhow, that's my rant.7 -
Today's butt hurt sponsor is... Cordova!
Whoever came up with wrapping web apps in a slow and outdated browser and calling them "Mobile Apps" are absolute lunatics, dangerous for the IT society.
These people should have immediately returned to the asylum they had escaped from, as soon as the idea visited their heads.8 -
Ever since I learned to mute my phone and set all communicator apps to “Unavailable” for a weekend, I am a much happier person :)1

Employer: Hey, we are moving an API update live tomorrow morning that could affect our apps. Can you regression test the apps to make sure they all work?
Me: The API team is pushing code overtop of live endpoints that can break them?
Employer: Yes, we need the updates to work with a new product we are developing.
Me: And nobody thought about versioning these endpoints so we guarantee uptime on all existing services using them now?
Employer: We looked at that but it cost extra and required us to use the cloud solution so we don’t use versioning.
Me: Okkk… I also take it that the API’s don’t have integration tests written?
Employer: What are integration tests? Are unit tests the same thing?
Me: No, so when do I need to regression test all 7 production apps?
Employer: The API’s are moving to production at 4am and we need it signed off by 7am.
Me: I only have 3 hours to regression test 7 production apps at 4am? Each app, if I just skim over them, would take me 2 hours each. I will do my best but that’s a very short time to ensure complete functionality.
Employer: Don’t you have unit tests?1 -
There are indie devs which still builds games for the NES or the first GameBoy... and then we have Apple which goes to extra lenghts to ensure which nobody can develop, publish or install new apps on devices which are too old for the newer iOS versions.4

macOS facts:
- Darwin core is open-source (https://github.com/apple/darwin-xnu). Not the case with Windows.
- You can use macOS without using any Apple online service like Apple ID, FaceTime or iCloud. Terminal will still work without restrictions, and any app can be installed manually. It's totally different from Google services on Android, without which most of the apps won't work at all.
- macOS updates are trivially to disable. It's a matter of unchecking "Update this mac automatically" checkbox in software update settings. Not the case with Windows, Windows updates are universally hated among developers for intentionally complex UI and update services being very hard to disable.
- Almost every feature or default behavior you dislike can be trivially disabled with one console command. Features won't re-enable automatically like I heard update service does in Windows. The only feature I dislike that I wasn't able to disable was a notification about unsafely unplugging a USB flash drive.
- Out of the box, you get a sophisticated disk manager that allows all kinds of manipulation on drives, just like what you get in Ubuntu.
- Just like on smartphones, you can trivially restrict or provide access to certain features like camera, microphone, etc. on app to app basis. I don't know how to easily do it in Linux, let alone in Windows.
- Apart from mastodons like GIMP, I find open source apps for macOS to have better UI than their Linux alternatives.
- Objective-See offers useful FOSS apps for macOS, they help with privacy and malware detection: https://objective-see.com/products....
I don't want to start a fight. Please, abstain from commenting on one OS being better / worse than the other. Please, don't comment on Mac computers being better / worse than computers of some other vendor. I'm very confused now because of my Dunning-Krueger thing (read my previous rants), so I just want to present the facts about macOS that I think deserve more exposure.31 -
Question: What is the fuckiest fuckup?
A) That it turrned out our apps login does not work on Safari at all? Although Safari should be Webkit and App works fine on Chrome and Firefox for years and should be normal Angular stuff by the way?
B) That in three years appareantly nobody considered trying it out in Safari?
C) That I can not use the iPad I got from my employer because fucking AppleId is requiring a fucking Phone number.
Answer: all of them.10 -
I can't believe fucking Google, aka me cha for SWEs decided that the best they can do is shove all that ram into our computers for Chromium. All of the major apps decided Electron was a good idea and now all of our computers are bloated with fatass memory hogs taking 600MB RAM.
Fuck you Goog.25 -
I have been keeping this inside for long time and I need to rant it somewhere and hear your opinion.
So I'm working as a Team Lead Developer at a small company remotely based in Netherlands, I've been working there for about 8 years now and I am the only developer left, so the company basically consists of me and the owner of the company which is also the project manager.
As my role title says I am responsible for many things, I maintain multiple environments:
- Maintain Web Version of the App
- Maintain A Cordova app for Android, iOS and Windows
- Working with pure JavaScript (ES5..) and CSS
- Development and maintenance of Cordova Plugins for the project in Java/Swift
- Trying to keep things stable while trying very hard to transit ancient code to new standards
- Testing, Testing, Testing
- Keeping App Stable without a single Testing Unit (sadly yes..)
- Just pure JavaScript no framework apart from JQuery and Bootstrap for which I strongly insist to be removed and its being slowly done.
On the backend side I maintain:
- A Symfony project
- MySQL
- RabbitMQ
- AWS
- FCM
- Stripe/In-App Purchases
- Other things I can't disclose
I can't disclose the nature of the app but the app is quite rich in features and complex its limited to certain regions only but so far we have around 100K monthly users on all platforms, it involves too much work especially because I am the only developer there so when I am implementing some feature on one side I also have to think about the other side so I need to constantly switch between different languages and environments when working, not to mention I have to maintain a very old code and the Project Owner doesn't want to transit to some more modern technologies as that would be expensive.
The last raise I had was 3 years ago, and so far he hasn't invested in anything to improve my development process, as an example we have an iOS version of the app in Cordova which of course involves building , testing, working on both frontend and native side and etc., and I am working in a somewhat slow virtual machine of Monterey with just 16 GB of RAM which consumed days of my free time just to get it working and when I'm running it I need to close other apps, keep in mind I am working there for about 8 years.
The last time I needed to reconfigure my work computer and setup the virtual machine it costed me 4 days of small unpaid holiday I had taken for Christmas, just because he doesn't have the enough money to provide me with a decent MacBook laptop. I do get that its not a large company, but still I am the only developer there its not like he needs to keep paying 10 Developers.
Also:
- I don't get paid vacation
- I don't have paid holiday
- I don't have paid sick days
- My Monthly salary is 2000 euro GROSS (before taxes) which hourly translates to 12 Euro per hour
- I have to pay taxes by myself
- Working remotely has its own expenses: food, heating, electricity, internet and etc.
- There are few other technical stuff I am responsible of which I can't disclose in this post.
I don't know if I'm overacting and asking a lot, but summarizing everything the only expense he has regarding me is the 2000 euro he sends me on which of course he doesn't need to pay taxes as I'm doing that in my country.
Apart from that just in case I spend my free time in keeping myself updated with other tech which I would say I fairly experienced with like: Flutter/Dart, ES6, NodeJS, Express, GraphQL, MongoDB, WebSockets, ReactJS, React Native just to name few, some I know better than the other and still I feel like I don't get what I deserve.
What do you think, do I ask a lot or should I start searching for other job?24 -
There's one thing I hate about the new year. Everyone assumes it's the best time to do some cleanup, some maintenance. As the year starts fresh - everyone should start fresh, right?
NOT!
No, Hetzner, you don't need to restart my servers on Dec 26th.
No, local VPS providers, you don't need to clean-up all my /tmp/ files for me on Dec 29th, leaving me in the dark and unaware I have to restart my apps.
That's just a dick move. Your intentions might be alright, but the consequences... Damn you!3 -

Somehow I enjoy creating flawlessly working nifty utilities a lot more than writing actual business code.
It's that versatility and reusability of a well-written utility that makes it suitable for many use-cases that puts a smile on my face.
A single-purpose business and use-case-specific piece of code doesn't do it for me anymore. I guess it never did, really...
I wish I could get paid for building tools rather than business apps :)3 -
The IT guy my parents had often at their home.
This guy thought me how to manage our network, how to create mobile apps. How to debug problems and so on. He sparked so much interest for computers in me and now i can't stop fiddleing around with computers.
Also this "electrician" who worked for my parents.
Basically he fixxed old keyboards, loudspeakers and stuff like that. He thought me about resistors, transistors, blue prints and how to solder stuff.

They both started my journey into the rabbit hole of technology.1 -

i feel like as an engineer , i should be building stuff, hobby projects but i don't seem to find a motivation. there is so little reward factor.
i have a dull job and therefore a lot of time. i am also 23 so i should be having a lot of excitement and energy, but am just... out of all that motivation. i want to build cool stuff : some streaming website/app, some social media platform, some cool system apps , but at the end no one is going to use it . why would u use a limited functionality gallary app when you have some very good apps? why would you use a netflix ui clone? what good will a blog website bring which has no blogs?
i am currently capable of making shit projects which are not going to be any rewarding to me, and therefore i do not build them.
i stead i waste my free time playing games that are atleast virtually rewarding :/

I am a no-nonsense, ads/marketing-hating person. I use adblockers on the web, modded apps on mobile, disable notifications for almost all the apps, and have the mobile on DND most of the time. I also send most of promotional and marketing emails to spam. the only ads and campaigns that are able to reach me are the forced native campaigns (i.e native ads in the news feed, social media feed, etc)
And I just joined a company whose main product is marketing for social media :/
This is not my first marketing domain company. I interned with video advert company also sometime back when I was a student. The work here in this domain is decent, not much is required since it's a B2B domain and whatever the library provider company couldn't provide, the B2C devs will hack and support on their own.
As a dev, I don't think most people like integrating ads, marketing channels, etc into their software. but being in presence of all the marketing stuff: growth, cohort, funnels audience, campaigns, retention... just ugh2 -
After working with a bunch of people it occurred to me that almost anyone can work and learn for most IT positions. This is something that most people will realize, especially if they work with newbies that learn on the go. There are exceptions of course, but most companies are just making crud apps with their business logic.
What I wonder then is, why is it that the way hiring is done seems to be completely against this idea? Rather than whining about recruiters and bad interviews, I am curious about why this is so common. What is it that a lot of companies think or see that make their hiring process so bad or convoluted?11 -

...another (probably about fourth) completely futile attempt at making MASM compiling pipeline work...
...what the fuck... seriously, i've spent together about two weeks of time trying to make a fucking default hello world compile... ml64 problems, then rc.exe problems, apparently i was missing some dumb CommonService.dll which not only doesn't exist anywhere on my computer, but it doesn't even seem to exist at all in this fucking dimension. After several hours I had the bright idea of "fuck MS rc, let's just grab any other random resource compiler that I can find, and see if that one works".
Funnily enough, it does. Except Visual MASM can't run it from it's build process because it fucks up the commandline call, so I need to run it manually, and then when I run the build from V-MASM, the rc call still fails, but then it checks for the resulting .res file and finds it, so it happily continues with success...
...and now fuckin... what even is it? *goes to check*
oh yeah, now linker is shitting itself:
LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'user32.lib'
And I'm just completely defeated, just searching system-wide for the lib intending to copy it into the linker folder because fuck this fucking bullshit, I've had enough of drowning in MS BuildTools versions and installations and uninstallations and fixes and modifys and repairs and all that FUCKING BULLSHIT.
HOW. THE. FUCK. is this in any way usable for anyone. I suspect nobody ever actually tried to build an assembler project in the last 30 years, so nobody noticed it DOESN'T. FUCKING. WORK.
THIS.
THIS is why I hate anything that's not a proper IDE where I install ONE thing, and do everything in that ONE IDE and let IT figure out all this linuxy-soft-coupled bullshit of twentyfuckingthousand fucking useless commandline apps threwn around the whole fucking system where I'm fucking supposed to know where the fuck what is and which version and GO FUCK YOURSELF.
GIMME. FUCKIN. ONE: IDE. WHICH. WILL. INSTALL. ALL. THAT. IT. NEEDS. TO. BE. FUCKING. ABLE. TO. FUCKING. WORK. AND. COMPILE. SHIT!!!

Small chaotic startup that never grew up (15 years atm).
Hosts/maintains a number of apps/sites for various customers.
At some point, someone decides that a CMS would be usefull to maintain the content across all products. Forgoing all sense, reason and the very notion of "additional maintenance and dev" it is decided that one should be built in-house.
Fast forward a number of years.
Ops performs routine maintenance on prod-servers. A java-patch accidently knocks out one of the pillars a 3rd party lib the CMS uses for storing images. CMS basically burst in to flames causing a.... significant incident.
Enter yours truly to fix the mess.
Spend a few days replacing the affected 3rd party lib. Run tests on CMS in test and staging environments. Apply java-patch. All seems fine.
When speaking to frontenders and app-devs, a significant hurdle present itself:
All test/staging instances of all websites/apps/etc ALL USE PRODUCTION CMS. Hardcoded. No way around.
There is -no- way to properly test and verify the functionality of any changes made to the home-brewed CMS.
My patch did indeed work in the end.
But did the company learn anything? Did they listen to my reasoning, pleading or even anguished screams for sanity?

I will keep this short. I fucking hate Windows 11. There is nothing I like about it after over four weeks of having its fuckery drip down everything I do on my laptop like radioactive maple syrup. None of my apps from Windows 10 work. I google troubleshooting and I'm not going to go through 10 hacks to solve a problem created by Microsoft. The screen moves all over the place for no reason. I hate it. Not as much as I hated Mac, but I'm going to revert back to Windows 10 if I can. I don't wish to separate my laptop screen from my laptop keyboard again. The only person I know who can fix it tried to steal a hundred and twenty bucks from me. Thank you for reading this rant I'm living a charmed life otherwise, but snipping tool just fucked up and I'm fucking fed up. Peace out.17

For a long time I could not understand how do people put up with watching ads in Android apps. Then it dawned upon me: they grew up like this and they never had a proper classic old-school desktop experience. Back in the day it was unimaginable to have intrusive ads. I will never put up with intrusive ads. I despise it
Now even developer tools have ads, like Docker or NPM8 -
Client has decided to buy another server because the old one is too slow
Manager: how long will it take to move our apps to the new server
Me: maybe 3-4 hours
15 hours later
Manager: why isn't it finished yet?
Me: because I have to install a lot of missing things on the new server, and I have to google a lot to find them
Me (thinking): because your 15-years old apps suck big time4 -
Looks like vector drawing applications stopped at bezier curves and don’t want to progress much.
I made a inkscape vector image and I used svg patterns to draw some background, then inkscape stopped responding when I’m trying to open that file on mac.
I tried bunch of other vector drawing apps hoping that at least one know what svg vector patterns are, looks like vector drawing applications use bitmaps for patterns and own formats instead of following svg specification.
I even wanted to pay for illustrator 30$ per month but it can’t do it. It opened my svg file claiming there’s no background there just empty space.
When I open svg image from browser it renders correctly but editing with gui is impossible cause all of those great softwares like illustrator, vectronator, sketch, affinity designer can’t handle vector patterns.
I ended up installing inkscape on old laptop that’s running ubuntu desktop.
Inkscape can do everything I want but I still need to delete not used pattens by editing xml.
At least it handles svg better than others.
Seriously vector image drawing apps suck.10 -
So, I am currently on Spring Break, and what do I do when I am on Spring Break: I take a moment to experiment with different languages. This time, I decided to check out Objective C since it mixes up two languages that I love dearly (but that I do not use outside of academic endeavors) which are C and Smalltalk.
Going around the net I found this https://github.com/Flying-Toast/...
Notice: I have nothing against Swift, I stopped developing apps for IOS back when Swift was in its infancy, so I was forced to use Objective C and tbh I never had an issue with it, I had learned it before through GNUStep, the language was obviously strange when I started learning it, but I did not hate it, I tried following Swift to see if I could use it at least in some portions, but at the time of its release it was still pretty much beta for me, so I passed. I feel it is much better now, but the issues with the language at this point in time I feel are more from the side of XCode which can either be just ok, good or an absolute piece of shit depending on the release. Either way, I found the link to be funny.2 -

- STOP asking me every god damn few weeks if I want to change my browser settings - NO I FUCKING DONT WANT TO USE BING, FUCK OFF
- STOP trying to be like an app and add pointless new "features" that nobody cares about and just do your fucking job, which is to be a PLATFORM which is stable, never changes and that gets out of my fucking way
- STOP reinstalling apps I uninstall, Im NOT FUCKING INTERESTED IN PAINT 3D, FUCK OFF
FUCK, ME,2 -
I've actually already discussed this one on here I believe
I see this job looking for an android developer for Kotlin with UI experience with XD & Figma and experience with Firebase. I have all of these qualifications so I throw my resume into the fray within an 2 hours the recruiters contact me. they have an offer of 76,000 and I'm looking for junior so I'm like, eh whatever, I give them a copy of my resume and we hold discussion for a few days and then radio silence. I then see a job posting EXTREMELY similar but with a "different company" so I throw my resume in and again within 2 hours I get a call only THIS TIME ITS THE INTERNAL HR. She sounds interested we have a good conversation and sets me up for 96,000 and they schedule me for my first interview within the week. Interview goes great, next I meet with the CTO and we have a pretty good conversation, I'm expecting a technical exam but it doesn't happen instead they give me a case study. they send me requirements for an app API to use, architecture, and a week time span to do it. I finish the app with extra features within 6 days, in my understanding of MVVM and I was excited and happy about this app because its JUST NICE. a week goes by and I meet with the tech team. They grill me on my application, scalability, use cases, how would I advertise or place advertisement and I'm answering everything they love the UI (I included mockups I made on XD), they say everything sounds good everyone leaves with smiles they say they have to find out on what team to place me because they have multiple apps and that HR will be in contact with me in the next few days... A WEEK GOES BY and I randomly get the declination email that next Friday. When I asked for feedback they said it wasn't true MVVM. I was devastated until the next week when I was accepted for a higher paying job that didn't require me to move. After I accepted this job guess who calls? THE FIRST RECRUITER and for this long I was wondering if this was the same job due to the very similar job description so I ask "is your client XXXXXXX?" it was I just told him "I'm good" and hung up4 -
any tips on how to get to liking web dev? I feel disgusted by it every time I try to learn it.
So, So much fragmentation. Everything's acceptable and the browser doesn't give any hoots about it. A particular page can have all the metadata, favicons, flintstones, metrics, bullshit with 90 attributes properly added into it by some hard-working dev and it would be acceptable by the browser.
Another page will have no shit defined, and that would also be acceptable!
CSS is holy fuck powerful. HTML has 50,000 pages of specification documents written behind it. javascript is so large, it can create both of these. the working of the browser is a different realm, the working of backend +cloud is a different dimension, the working of 3d graphics and game resumes via some crazy js package is a different reality!
It's a vast, fucking, overwhelming universe!!
I am 23, trying to make sense of this stuff for the last 8 years. To make decent little pages and tools that I can use, or the world can use, but fuck me if I even know the types and attributes of <link> element.
I have gone from being a school student to a college student to an employed profession in android dev, yet I don't understand web much
Every time i try learning it, instead of reaching my goal to create something useful, I am stuck in the stupid tutorial hell.
I can make a decent-looking resume or file-based server using various auto completions and helps from web storm, plugins, and medium articles, but I don't want to sound dumb if someone questioned me anything about this stuff, which I would sound, because i have no clue!
I love creating android apps, i don't know why. I know that some jerk is going to see my app and say "HEY STUPID. YOU DIDN'T USE PROTOBUFS OR COMPOSE, YOUR APP SUCKS", but I won't give a damn about them. because after making apps for 5 years, I don't care for newer stuff if it isn't better. I would rather spend my time making the use case work properly on user devices than caring for new shit.
It's also not like I completely ignore my knowledge growth by rejecting everything new. I transitioned from java to kotlin, from linear layouts to constraint layouts, using jetpack libraries, etc as my main tools. I know the time to transition and i also know the time when i have to learn various stuffs, in android dev
I change tools like I change my pen. Once its refill is over, but if its body is intact, I would just buy a refill and reuse it. but if its cap is lost and body is broken, i ain't getting glue and refill to fix those. i will buy a new, better pen
But on the topic of web dev, I am not like that. I can't figure out a limited set of knowledge from where I would grow on my own, i can't figure out how much to learn and where to go from that , i can't figure out anything :/
I am stuck mann17 -
I've been working as a developer for 10 years now... I got my first software development job when I was still learning for my masters.
After all this time I have switched programming languages and product types a few times from web development to mobile apps to desktop software (C++, CEF, QT,).
And I have come to the conclusion that I want early retirement... like right now retirement... I'm done dealing with management that doesn't understand shit... dealing with people we have outsourced part of the shit to... needing to fix stuff that is broken after some other person refactored the code and didn't fully test it and it somehow got approved... dealing with people that think that "know better" and implemented things like that 5 years ago because they thought like "THAT" and will not accept my merge request because of that.
Like don't get me wrong I love to make and develop software, but since this is the 3rd job in the row with a toxic environment like this I feel like I need to move to the country side and open up a farm or something :|2 -
Recruiter: We are looking for a full-stack expert. You have taken multiple apps from conception to deployment, and have experience and opinions on the best technologies to use and why. You should be comfortable implementing new features from scratch, making changes to existing features and writing complex migrations on production data.
Dev: lol4 -
Hey guys! I'm new here, and also in programming... I'm finishing my studies in Python and I would like to ask you a question, if I can... what else should I learn that would help me? I intend to start my "career" as a web developer, at least for now... did I do it right? am i starting wrong?12

I rewrote a giant VBA workbook (lots of business formulas, custom pivots of the data) into Java apps/microservices so that new tabs, other reports can be easily added using (JSON) data from the other apps.
In general, I was the only dev in the team that understood that monoliths are hard to change or scale... -
Offence taking Siri. :)
"I heard what you said about the new macbook. You're grounded." deletes 4 apps. -
Continuing to learn k8s ecosystem and to achieve acceptable level
With trying eventually Helm, Argo CD and even trying to use not managed setup for k8s.
Going though books to find out theory about being SRE.
And about data intensive apps.
Learning and trying Kafka
Learning and trying FastAPI and diving in generally to async python ecosystem
Learning Go.
Learning few more books to increase code quality and its compositioning.
Getting more practice in monitoring and logging systems with applicating them to k8s.3 -
What I "discovered" recently is, that Android will sometimes update certain apps even if you have auto-update disabled in Play Store.
Yes, just like that. I am not sure what exactly triggers the update, but it is certainly possible.
Just now I have seen that my Netflix app got auto-updated. Which is not a big deal in itself. But taking control out of the user's hands IS a big deal. This needs to stop. ❎12 -
Non tech hobby of mine: bird watching (you may have guessed based on my username). Although it’s a non tech hobby, there are so many great apps to help identify birds and learn about them. EBird, birdnet, Merlin, picture bird etc. I also have a few books about bird watching.
Crazy how many different kinds of birds you can see when you really start paying attention.5 -
I have to make a change to one of our web apps today. I hate front end, the code for this is terrible, the fix is going to be horrible and hacky.
I really miss having some kind of motivation for this work, it would make life easier.
Instead it’s just one empty pointless day after another. -
Saw a Job ad stating they give a brand new MacBook Air as you get hired (as a FrontEnd developer)
Is this a red flag? BC to me it really looks like a red flag.
Why would I specifically need a Mac? Just to test stuff on shitty Safari? I really hope so and I also really hope that it won't be to start developing iOS apps11 -
I find it insightful when people actually convert their rant into a knowledge bomb 💣💥😅 https://hackersandslackers.com/flas...
Finally getting to know clear advantages of "application factory" over how Flask apps are usually sugar-coated in scarce tutorials.
This article also points out one of the core problems with Flask documentation and, consequently, a public view on Flask's feature parity with Django.
Ever wondered why it's looked upon as not very strong rival to Django? That's documentation... again, we come to that 😔⌨️🗑 It stretches a lot of commentary and side notes, but forgets to mention best practices from community.rant overlooked patterns where are my blueprints monopoly of django poor documentation tutorial hell make factory great again flask python -
any unity devs here? i wanted to start building apps and games using unity, and wanted some pointers on how to start. is a license really necessary, can i learn unity/ its languages for free?7

I have two laravel apps. Both sharing one redis db. One has App/Post one has App/Models/Blog/Post. When I unserialize models from redis cache saved by the other app I get issues because it cannot find the right model to hydrate.
How would you build a custom map to get the right model?15 -
Dev and not Dev related:
So I finally got approved for an Afterpay balance. It was around 400 or 700 (forgot), I got a phone, a pair of shoes and a bible.
1. The last study Bible I bought was a normal sized book by dimension
This study Bible came and it was so small I couldn't read it without frustration
2. The pair of shoes were 2 sizes too small even though I always buy the same size!
3. The phone I received was faulty. No gyroscope, no tilt in games, no calibration for Google maps, no google assistant microphone.
4. I held off not returning the phone because I couldn't stand not having one for two to three weeks or whatever.
5. Now I've discovered a crack on the corner of my screen.
6. Now my Afterpay balance is no longer 400/700 it's only 200 even though I paid everything. Might be because of one missed payment or two which I caught up on.
7. I got the shits with windows ten and moved to Linux elementary is only to find that everything I install requires missing dependencies and those dependencies have no installation candidate which means I can it install the dependencies.
Now I can't get back to windows because not one out of the 5 or 6 iso burning apps I used are able to create a bootable windows USB.
I've tried woeusb also, and woe is me for trying it. That also has no installation candidates for its dependencies iirc. Fuck Mr why is Linux so shit? I even tried the software on Linux Mint to create a bootable fucking windows USB but that won't show up on boot either.
Now I have to bug my mother to use her windows PC to use the windows media creation tool to create a bootable windows USB, and either return this phone under warranty or get a new one under 200 (🤬) or just keep this one.
So, after all of this shit, I did not get one fucking thing I wanted.
No fucking properly working phone, no shoes, no bible and no working desktop os.
If anybody knows of any tools that create bootable windows USB sticks on elementary os
Oh and this time around unetbootin won't detect any USB drives on my Linux distros so I can't use that.
For all the fanboys on here don't tell me it's user error because I am more than experienced enough to know how to do these things on Linux.5 -
How do you pick a new language to learn?
I am a C# developer and at work I work on desktop apps and legacy web services etc.
I fancy learning something else so I can have a bit of variety when working on personal projects etc.
I am doing a distance learning degree which has used Java and Python so far, with some PHP and JS etc to come later.
I’m drawn to Ruby as I already have experience there, but I was also thinking about looking at Node as that covers back end and front end all using JS which is definitely useful in general as I look at moving to a more web based role.11 -
My co-working space was too loud, so I created an app to shush them automatically
(that's the name)
It actually worked :-)1 -
A philosophical question about maintenance/updating.
There is no need to repeat the reasons we need to update our dependencies and our code. We know them/ especially regarding the security issues.
The real question is , "is that indicates a failure of automation"?
When i started thinking about code, and when also was a kid and saw all these sci fi universes with robots etc, the obvious thing was that you build an automation to do the job without having to work with it anymore. There is no meaning on automate something that need constant work above it.
When you have a car, you usually do not upgrade it all the time, you do some things of maintance (oil, tires) but it keeps your work on it in a logical amount.
A better example is the abacus, a calculating device which you know it works as it works.
A promise of functional programming is that because you are based on algebraic principles you do not have to worry so much about your code, you know it will doing the logical thing it supposed to do.
Unix philosophy made software that has been "updated" so little compared to all these modern apps.
Coding, because of its changeable nature is the first victim of the humans nature unsatisfying.
Modern software industry has so much of techniques and principles (solid, liquid, patterns, testing that that the air is air) and still needs so many developers to work on a project.
I know that you will blame the market needs (you cannot understand the need from the start, you have to do it agile) but i think that this is also a part of a problem .
Old devices evolved at much more slow pace. Radio was radio, and still a radio do its basic functionality the same war (the upgrades were only some memory functionalities like save your beloved frequencies and screen messages).
Although all answers are valid, i still feel, that we have failed. We have failed so much. The dream of being a programmer is to build something, bring you money or satisfaction, and you are bored so you build something completely new.13 -
Ok, it's the second day and still the same problem: creating JS apps takes like forever. I think it's maybe with the servers since my Internet is completely fine.
-
I recently removed the PlayStore and other Google apps from my smartphone and got myself fdroid.
Since not all the apps that I'm using are on fdroid I wondered, how to keep those apps up-to-date?3 -
you know, i sometimes feel that whenever i think of a great idea, i start with such a bang, but end up losing motivation and therby delivering a very small scale personal project.
i have made some good apps in the past, some of which have so loyal users that they even mail me to this date. , and i then release an update for them.
those apps were made on an idea that would solve my problem, but i stopped using them. but somehow a few people had similar problem. somehow my app solved for them and somehow they are using it.
i wish i could not burst all my crackers during the development phase only. comparing this to my office work, the office work is still better.
In there, am responsible for delivering a specific output in specific timeframe (say a jira sprint) and if i complete something early, then no one wants me to pick future stuff.
instead i got this limited, exploration period where i can experiment with the codebase, add changes to my liking, get them reviewed / merged if they look good and that's it . once that exploration period is over, i have to pick the task of that weekend/sprint.
I am timed to deliver some stuff in some timeframe. in personal project, i want to put in everything "until its over" .the dev would be made in 3-7 days, with sometimes more than 24 hours per day being on the project, and the poosh! i will deploy it to playstore, market it on social media , and forget about it.
don't know what can be improved in here to make myself more happy with my personal projects? getting feedback/recognition keeps me on my toes
anyone has any tips for this kind of mind-blockage?2 -
ugh... laptops are like , crazy addictions.
1 year ago, my hp laptop was the best for me, building android studio apps , keeping daily backups of all my home's appliances comfortably in it, running games and various softwares . i would carry it anywhere without fearing of any damage thanks to heavy cases and keyboard covers.
till i started my first job who gave me an intel mac to work with.I got a revised definition of a laptop. laptops are not what i knew .
- a laptop is something which does not take 20+ minutes to build android apps and can build in 60 seconds too
- a laptop is something which does not need to have a shitty plastic body and can have a high quality metal body.
- a laptop is something which does not need to have a shitty screen and can have a really clear (but fragile /s) HQ screen.
and
- a laptop is something which does not necessarily gives you ports. /s
- a laptop is something which does not necessarily needs large storage to store your stuff. /s
- INR 60K (or half of my 1st year college fees) isn't apparently not enough for a laptop
- a laptop can cost TONS to get fixed /s
.....
now , i did have learned all this and even after all the flaws , i feel like inclined towards buying a macbook. however coming from a typical lower class family from india , who DID break a laptop screen in 1 year, i am having some serious concerns buying a laptop , a 16 inch piece of aluminium for 300K (almost the cost of my four years of graduation)
but compared to that , i also have concerns buying any laptop above 100k because that's a lot of money , even though I could afford it. the whole point is, my non tech grocery seller parents worked too hard for very less money . i am in tech profile, i believe my work is not that much physically intensive, and i work half as hard as those guys , nd earn good yet spending SO MUCH feels like being an idiot
oh the headache :/11 -
I haven't written a line of code in over a month ever since I stopped working due to health issues...
And I have no desire or ideas to create any new apps...
Sorta feels like I'm throwing away 20+ years of work/experience/passion.
Maybe I should just solve algo problems for fun?
Or should I finally try doing some (Java) open source...
Where to find projects?7 -
It just never works when you try to set up self hostet php apps never theyre all shit they never print any useful errors they just randomly pass wrong args they use fucking ioncube fuck everything6

fucking hate implementing a chat feature in the apps! a couple of moving parts and edge case handling!2

When using the new iMac 🖥, how come the images for apps are crystal clear (apart from steam apps), but as soon as it comes to playing a video the Mac just decides to lower the image quality dramatically?3

WinUI looks nice and performs really well, I'm not a Windows fan but that's definitely a hidden Microsoft gem. It's a same which Microsoft was really late to the desktop development game and kept providing ugly frameworks until few years ago otherwise we could had a nice ecosystem on desktop apps on Windows as we have on macOS instead of tons of ugly and slow Electron based apps.3

OK, so, I see PY files shared on GitHub. All I know is, it is code for certain apps or pages. I download SEVERAL DIFFERENT PROGRAMS trying to get PY to open. Some didn't work, others were in Console and not Form. I asked for help on the Forum, how to open it, they do the same BS; gave me a Console app that just stays black for less than a second, and closes. I ask for a Form version. They made the excuse that it wasn't a program like I was thinking. They rudely tell me to be polite, but something like this IS GOING TO HAPPEN if they can't get their crap working. Eventually, after I TOLD THEM I WAS FURIOUS, THEY HIDE MY QUESTION FOR 10 MINUTES. When I replied, I DID NOT CUSS, I REPLACED LETTERS WITH ASTERISKS AND SYMBOLS, AND STILL GOT SUSPENDED, FOR A MONTH, AFTER TELLING THEM I WAS FURIOUS.
On the other hand, I was using Audacity. I upgraded and a plugin stops working. I thought they messed something up, so I wait using the outdated version for the fix for a few months, and so a few months later I update again, at this point I was a little upset; 2nd update and it still doesn't work. After the 3rd time, I thought they just didn't want to take the time and fix it, as people probably would have reported it by then. So I rant on Audacity's Forum saying they didn't fix an error, showed them screenshots in all versions I got and the 3 newest ones show an error. THEY TOLD ME WHAT WAS WRONG! I was trying to run a 32-Bit plugin on a 64-Bit version! I downloaded a 32-Bit version of the newest Audacity, and the plugin worked fine.
Python could've done what Audacity did, but, "No-o-o, we enjoy banning Winston when he is peed off!" And just so, the Suspension ends a day after my Birthday.
I might just ask when I'm back on, "How to remove my user off this Forum", so they can say "I can't", and flag it as malware because I almost no longer want they're help, and CAN'T GET AWAY FROM IT.
Freak you in the butt, Python.
PS - If anyone knows how to use Python files in Windows 10 or know a free, non-demo program that will more-advancedly edit, save, open PY files in a Form, please, give me the name or link to the software, program or app in the comments.
Before anyone says anything, this page says "Rant", so don't ban this or I'm deleting my account. If this isn't a "Rant" site, please tell me, and/or rename this site.
That is the reason I came here, just to get my frustration out.15 -
Hey guys, i decided to post something useful here, rather than just complaining.
I had this problem where google app sign in loads forever. I was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem.
So, it turns out theres a param called requestidlecallback in settings, safari, advanced, experimental. It should be off.
If its not off, and your trying to sign in to google on an app, force stop the app, turn it off, then force stop settings, then restart your computer. -
Has anyone used advertising agencies like admob, AdSense etc in their websites or apps and anyone have great success stories to share with them? I get it "depends on the app or website" but I wanna know if anyone has managed to get a decent amount of monthly earnings from it.3

so i have this dilemma whether i would want to try and make a web app but every time i wanna start i always think that there are better apps out there than what i have in mind or it absolutely wont go well and i never end up actually make progress on one. what do i do?2
-
hey guys . i want to learn and make spring based backend that would provide endpoints for db and also serve some webpages . any good /modern resources that could build upon my current knowledge and explain me in a sequential manner?
I make android apps in java/kotlin which uses gradle for compiling dependencies, so i kinda understand some basic java software architecture.
i would prefer gradle/kotlin based tutorials but maven+ java tutorials are also not a problem. my main problem is to get an idea of the various "built in stuff" :
- how the app works?
- how the security works? what are those configs? how can i provide role based access, google authentications, associate security with user based db, etc... (i also don't have much idea about any general backend stuff so theoretical knowledge will also help greatly)
how do beans work? can we avoid their xmls and/or customize them from java code
- how do application.properties work?
-...
i have a lot of questions but every article i read starts with "add this dependency in your project" , "override this class" . like am i just supposed to enable some flags and features automatically get added to my project? doesn't this limit the customisation options?and if they are limited then how much are those customisation options ? i wanna understand them all and then choose the ones that are essential2
