My computer science teacher is very sly: while you are working he stands right behind you for some time, so you start writing good code, functions for everything, perfect indentation... But you don't know if he is still behind you, and you're not brave enough to look back, so you write good code for the rest of the lesson.
What a good prof8 -
I hate when someone compares two languages depending on which one gives a "Hello world" with less lines of code.6

Can't stand it when you excitedly mention the Mars rover (or anything space related) to someone and they say "Yeah but what's the point you could be feeding the poor or sorting out the environment with that money instead"
...yeah, you could. Or you could be doing that with money from the army instead. Or football. Or any other popular sport. Or yaknow, you could personally be doing that rather than spending all your salary on crappy clothes you're going to throw away in a few months anyway.
And that's not even mentioning the jobs it creates, the people it inspires to go into science + tech fields, the scientific advances it makes for humanity, etc. If you're that against scientific advancement then please, by all means surrender your possessions and just go live in a cave somewhere.6 -
Devrant feature: It would be cool that when you wanna write a comment, it doesn't open a new page, but a textarea appears at the bottom, so I can re-read the other comments and the rant without going back.19

I think I am the only person on the universe that doesn't like stickers on laptops.
1 or 2 could be fine, but more than that is just ugly for me.5 -
Devrant has a big security hole... Just post "Which is better, Linux, Windows or Mac os?"
The internet will crash13 -
Does anyone remember these? I would navigate to search just to see these characters perform different animations and movements
What a wonderful time it was🥺7 -
NASA’s Mars 2020 rover is heading to the red planet and they are giving a chance to send your names with it, yet another time. → https://mars.nasa.gov/participate/...14

Just finished recruiting processes with 3 companies and I’m afraid that in 2 more years, you will need a masters and to have worked on the Mars rover in order to get a jr position.29

So, my uncle gave me an old computer: 1GB of RAM, 1.7GHz dual-core, HDD 80GB, I'm definitely NOT going to trash it, so... What do I do with it? Ideas?23

Your first operating system?
I'm 16 years old but mine was... Windows XP.
I used it for 3/4 years and I loved it. I miss you mate.40 -

<imho> I prefer the second one, it is definitely more readable </imho>7 -
How awesome is that! NASA's Mars rover software is available on Github: https://github.com/nasa-jpl/.... Also impressive: Github uses WebGL to render 3D previews of STL files! https://github.com/nasa-jpl/....
21st century, baby!4 -
So... Today I started using my first Python web framework, web2py. At a first glance I liked it, the templating system, the view/controller thing ecc. But there is one thing in frameworks that I really don't like: they make me feel dumb.
I mean, in just one line of code I can generate an entire form, but if I wanna customize it a little bit... I can't. Or better, it is very hard, also if there is a bug, I have to look for a problem in an entire system that I DID NOT wrote.
I don't like the idea that the frameworksl handles everything for you, like it is teasing me, I don't even know how it works, it just works, and man, I don't like it. There's some kind of hacker in me, I dont like a system that just works, I want to know how it works. But the sad thing is that I will have to learn web frameworks if I want to work in the IT, right? Please If you can help me or share your experience with web frameworks do so.3 -
My dad: "Oh yeah, JavaScript, Java, I know that stuff! You know the Mars Rover is actually using JavaScript?"
Me: "Oh is it now?"
Dad: "Yeah lots of things use Java"
Me: "You mean JavaScript?"
Dad: "Yeah Java, JavaScript, you know like building website forms"
Me:" Yeah I know, yeah, I, know... -_-"6 -
A 2d simulation of the mars rover curiosity and its commandControl station. Pure java. The two components talk to each other via apache-kafka. Rover has its own operating system (kernel) and resource management. Hooked up some sensors to NASA API.2

What happens when I say "uhm... and what if I remove this two little lines of code?"

Passed the whole day working on the back-end of my web-app, and right when I decide to find some nice icons for the front-end... My dad enters the room.
Now he thinks that I play with pretty icons the whole day.

Definitely, the fifth episode of Mr Robot is far better than the others 4, especially the last part, very exciting.2

I know this is selfish, but this whole COVID-19 thing is driving me insane. The virus and quarantine I don't mind too much. What gets me is the number of people I see every single day having legit panic attacks because they can't buy "x" right now and it's the end of the world. I can't stand people who are literally in tears because they have to take an extra day off of work each week because of the state of the economy. I've been virtually unemployed for two years (not for lack of trying) and borderline homeless for six months. Grow up. You have a Lexus, a Range Rover, and a four bedroom house for you and your partner.9

Because when you built the UI and you watch how the end user interact with it, it’s like watching your kid approach their first love, or like watching moon rover landing except you designed and built the whole program by yourself.
It’s just magical.1 -
Woah, it seems that since there is the "w10" tag quite everyone here in Devrant started programming when he was 6-7 years old... Come on10

Just switched from Debian to Ubuntu, should have coded for a project today... But I passed hours playing freeciv... At least I had fun!!

On every website I visit, first thing is to snoop who gave the SSL certificate to the domain
Idk why I do this2 -
Anyone watched the Silicon Valley? AMAZING! I love it, Ehrlich and Gilfoyle are the best!
Does someone know a similar show? And please don't suggest the IT crowd, I don't like it8 -
I wrote 170 lines of PHP code consecutively and I haven't ran it yet...
I'm scared of sending that form.3 -
I know I'm gonna get flak for mentioning Facebook. But to mark the launch tomorrow and our progression to a mission to Mars, I made an automated NodeJS script.
The script gets the most recent collection of photos taken by the Curiosity rover via NASA's API and chooses one at random. The image is then posted to a Facebook page for a nice little update on what the lil Mars homie is up to.
Since it's image based, I'll work on adding it to Instagram too.4 -
I gained 10kg from eating shitting and writing code.
Time to move on or I will die with head in my keyboard.
I was planning to buy a water rover so I don’t have to get out from home during winter but well I don’t know. The gym is across the road and to get a decent water rover I need to spend 3 years of gym. I can’t decide if gym is better than exercise at home. You have greater accessibility to the training device at home.
What you think ?
Should I buy a water rover or go to gym ?9 -
Python, my program doesn't work but is not giving any error, i read all the stackoverflow questions, arrived on the fourth page on Google, and the documentation is poor...
I'm about to die1 -
Hey, i'm just a guy and I develop applications and study at the same time, so I dont work...
In a lot of post I read words like IT jobs, 'editing code in production', could someone please explain me their meaning? Thank you3 -
How am i supposed to learn C# if Visual Studio took me 24 hours to install, now that it's installed it crashes every time i build my code, plus, it makes chrome and IE crash every 5 minutes, and it lags as shit?11

Should I learn C# or Java?
There are many topics over the internet but a direct opinion from you guys would be appreciated.
I would also know, what does C# have in common with asp.NET and web application development? It isn't clear to me
Thanks18 -
just wondering... Am I the only one that likes the old Windows 95/98 graphic style? I find very simple and professional... I like old OSes GUI6

How DevOps is beneficial for Mobile app development?
Can anyone explain to me with a budget-friendly Mobile app development company?1
