Me: I have been working for you for almost 12 years now, and I feel that my current pay is not comparable to the work I currently produce. Therefore, in order to secure my future as your employee, I must request an immediate raise in pay to a level that is acceptable.
Boss: I can't afford it. If you want more money, you need to bring in more clients, plain and simple.
Me: I'm serious. If I don't get a raise, I will qui---
Girlfriend: Babe, stop talking to yourself and come to bed...

My last employer lost 6 devs and 2 designers within a month because they thought money could buy them the right to treat employees like shit.
F_ money. We love our self respect more.6 -
Manager: Does anybody having any money saving ideas?
Dev: By switching our supplier from X to Y we could save $10,000/year and they have much better customer service.
Manager: So? I’m looking more for savings opportunities in the +$100k range. That’s a small idea, I’m looking for *BIG* ideas.
Dev: Do you have any big ideas?
Manager: No, but I really really want to save big money like that. I thought you would have something worthwhile.
Dev: $10,000 still a lot of money
Manager: I guess…. Ok we can do it. But don’t bother me with peanuts like this again.
Dev: ??? You asked me buddy15 -
Client asks for redesign to look more like XYZ site.
I deliver a redesign to look more like XYZ site.
Client wants the site to look more like his old site. But different. Gives extensive instructions on how to design his website to his liking.
At some point, I think I'll be owing him money for his design/dev services, not the other way around.
What is it with these people?5 -

Got fired a few months back because of my 'colourful personality'...
They hired a replacement for my position, a yes-knodder and -apparently- a person without any sense of pro-active commitment.
Hearing from ex-coworkerd, the replacement is a total slob, and the company owners already regretting their decision.
Meanwhile, got my own company and do the things i did before for a lot more money.
Muahahahahaha14 -
@dfox and @trogus, here's an idea! What if every 20th or so rant was an ad? But not any ad, but job ads posted by recruiters!
That way you get money and we get more stuff to laugh about!14 -
Agency: "Why don't you do more free work for us? When you do that we can give you better jobs for money?"

The "it's a feature" assholes!
The Madman Muntz misers!
The computer science and engineering fields are filled to the brim with fakers, phony's and Python Lords. I try to fight them every time but they outnumber me. Apparently money is more attractive than expressing your own passion.11 -
Interviewer: Do you have created any android application before?
Dev: I just built an application to increase, farming production to help farmers earn some more money. It's less profitable but makes farmers better.
Interviewer: That's so stupid. Do you know Jeff Bezos?
Dev: yes
Interviewer: we need someone like that level of visionary to make money for our company. Sorry, we don't think you can make apps that makes people do stupid things for fame.
Dev: Do you know Nicola Tesla
Interviewer : yes
Dev: Well he should have pulled the plug long ago.6 -
This is why my bro is my bro.
I'm in shit with money and rent, so my mate gave me £10 for food and offered me a desktop (I had to sell my laptop) so I can make a bit more money doing software development.

My family thinks I'm unemployed (I mostly freelance) and that I will soon suffer from starvation, even though I am making more money than most of my peers with stable jobs.

Just got laid off today. Nonperformance related. Oh well here's to better opportunities and more money in my future endeavors. Wish me luck!10

Banks be like
You don't have much money?
Here, let me keep taking some of that from you until you get more, k?
Oh, that was more than you had?
Now you owe me even more, nerd.
What, you can't pay that either?
Better ask me for a loan so you can pay off your debt to me. Loser.
What? You still can't pay?

Interviewer: I don't understand. With a resume and portfolio like yours you shouldn't be applying to companies like us. You should be setting your sights on companies like Google/Meta. You'd be bored here after everything you've done so far. I know we're offering more money than your current position but you're worth more believe me. I'm going to keep looking, and so should you. But you need to aim higher.
Dev: ...
Well fuck me I guess?18 -
Today I officially switched from 5 working days per week to just 4 days. It will be less money, but much more freedom & happiness.
I'm a lucky guy to have this opportunity, but I also put my big chunk of effort to achieve this degree of freedom. And I'm proud for that.11 -
This is my first post on devRant!
Story time:
It was on my first job as a developer, learning a lot but getting paid less than 50% of the minimum monthly wage of my country.
It was settled in the interview that as I gained more experience, I could handle more projects and earn more money.
At the time, I was living with my parents and didn't have to pay rent and some stuff, so I was like "Well, I'm gonna learn a lot and, if I put a lot of effort into it, soon I'll be making more money".
We agreed that I'll only develop, but 4 months into the job, I was already going to clients
and started coding there (having the client on my back every minute, not being able to work properly) and fixing some computer/network issues they had,
because my boss said I should do it.
Things at home started to go south, and suddenly I needed more money, so I kept doing the work and getting paid a little bit more
A year goes by, devs came and go beacuse of the work/payment situation, and I was still there.
From my first "paycheck" to the last day I never got paid on time, and that was the same for everybody else
The last month I was there, I had a job offer with a better salary and weekends free, so I wanted to take it (I worked saturdays there).
We were working at our biggest clients place at the time (a hospital, working in the server room, desk and chair were a total crap),
so I wanted to have a good conversation with my boss and tell him whats up, after all, I was really grateful for the job despite all things.
We headed outside and started talking. He basically begged me to stay, said that he will pay me on time and offered me more money (less than the other company was offering me),
and that he needed me to finish the implementation and "minor issues" with the app.
I thought about it for a couple of days, and decided to stay. I politely rejected the job offer, and even recommended someone else.
As the days passed, regret was building fast inside of me, until the day that I was supposed to get paid.
He never showed up to the client, told me in a call that he will be there sometime in the morning, that he had the money for me.
So I stayed until my day ended, and still no sign of him. I had no money on me, needed some for gas so I could go, and I called him 5 times.
He picked up the last time, talks to me like nothing is happening and I started to shout at him like I never shouted to anybody before,
got all the things of my chest, and when I was done, he said that he will send the money to my account right away.
This happened on a Saturday, so I quit the following Monday, and lost the other job offer.7 -

Today is one of many days fellas! Today my coworkers and I will fight again for more salary! Our company is making millions and billions of euros and we won't be gifted for our work!
I hope in your countries you have the same rights to fight for your money. If so, do it!
Sorry for no Dev realated post's!
TL;DR I have me no money40 -
Start-up: hires 3 junior devs to save money.
Start-up: expects things to get done faster-- BUT-- Start-up keeps adding things to the TO-DO list and backlog-- i.e. it's all relative!!
Start-up: gets angry at 3 junior devs why they can't deliver when they keep adding tasks and ask we fall behind.
Dev team: "Seriously? You hire more devs to finish tasks faster, but you keep adding more than are being finiahed-- obviously it's gonna take longer now regardless"

– we’ll be making money teaching people to code

I'm specialized in creating technical debt.
Basically, I rant my way in any dev specialty.
Since I never have a solid understanding of what I'm fucking with, ranting is more natural.
Ability to create technical debt is one of the most important skill, often underestimated:
- it will lead to heavy refactoring or even rewrite = more job for dev
- it will save a lot of short term effort, and luckily will produce the mid-term lock-in of the developers (more money for dev)
- it will increase billable hours to the customer. Higher the technical debt, more complex the explanation, and easier to confuse the customer.
- the best thing is that you'll never pay the debt. You'll eventually leave - willing or not - the job and you'll find some green field to exploit and create more debt.17 -
Got a job as a controls engineer. Told my parents.
Parents: Good Job!
Brother: Bro! How you make so much money?
Me: I went to a tech school and learned how to do technical stuff.
Brother: Oh... fuck that shit!
Everyone was really supportive. Been slowly gravitating from controls to more pure software. But a lot of the software I write is for controls and automation of machines.6 -
Conversation between me (intern) and a guy from communications, let's call him Bob.

Me: "But you don't pay me..."
Bob: "Oh yeah, you're right haha XD."
Me: "Haha... :')"2 -

Seriously, the amount of motivation I have right now is goddamn high but money is going to become an issue soon.5 -
Really cool. Tesla gave two hackers that found a vulnerability in the Model 3 free cars as a reward. More companies should do that, instead of getting all pissy. I would hope a company wants to know what their vulnerabilities are so that they can avoid embarrassment and the loss of money.2

➡️You Are Not A Software Developer⬅️
When I became a developer, I thought that my job is to write software. When my customer had a problem, I was ready to write software that solves that problem. I was taught to write software.
But what customers need is not software. They need a solution to their problem. Your job is to find the most cost-effective solution, what software often is not.
According to the universal law of software development, more code leads to more bugs:
e = mc²
Or
errors = (more code)²
The number of bugs grows with the amount of code. You have to prioritize, reproduce and fix bugs.
The more code you write, the more your team and the team after it has to maintain. Even if you split the system into micro services, the complexity remains.
Writing well-tested, clean code takes a lot of time. When you’re writing code, other important work is idle. The work that prevents your company from becoming rich.
A for-profit company wants to make money and reduce expenses. Then the company hires you to solve problems that prevent it from becoming rich. Confused by your job title, you take their money and turn it into expensive software.
But business has nothing to do about software. Even software business is not about software. Business is about making money.
Your job is to understand how the company is making money, help make more money and reduce expenses. Once you know that, you will become the most valuable asset in the company.
Stop viewing yourself as a software developer. You are a money maker.
Think about how to save and make money for your customers.
Find the most annoying problem and fix it:
▶️Is adding a new feature too costly? Solve the problem manually.
▶️Is testing slow? Become a tester.
▶️Is hiring not going well? Speak at a meetup and advertise your company.
▶️Is your team not productive enough? Bring them coffee.
Your job title doesn’t matter. Ego doesn’t matter either.
Titles and roles are distracting us from what matters to our customers – money.💸
You are a money maker. Thinking as a money maker can help choose the next skill for development. For example:
Serverless: pay only for resources you consume, spend less time on capacity planning = 💰
Machine Learning: get rid of manual decision-making = 💰
TDD: shorter feedback cycle, fewer bugs = 💰
Soft Skills: inspire teammates, so they are more productive and happy = 💰
If you don’t know what to learn next — answer a simple question:
What skills can help my company make more money and reduce expenses?
Very unlikely it’s another web framework written in JavaScript.

My company grows like crazy. We have more money than we could ever spend, no deadlines, super smart people (some coming from Google, Apple, FB etc), and all the perks one could wish for.
I'm sometimes feeling like I don't belong here, because I'm mediocre at best with everything I do. 😥5 -
Programmers are like bees!
You can domesticate programmers the way beekeepers tame bees. You can't exactly communicate with them, but you can get them to swarm in one place and when they're not looking, you can carry off the honey. You keep these bees from stinging by paying them money. More money than they know what to do with. But that's less than you might think. ~ Orson Scott Card -
WHY DO WE HAVE TO BUY THE PROFESSOR'S BOOK JUST TO BE ABLE TO PASS THE COURSE?
It's so stupid, I'm currently attending a Operating Systems course at university and the professor NEEDS us to buy his book because all of the tasks and seminars are based on his book. It is stupid! There are thousands of books out there on Operating Systems programming! Free ones too! But instead we have to spend 800SEK (100USD) on his book.
And guess what? There is literally one task based on his book... To summarize the chapters about Fixed Priority scheduling and Dynamic Priority scheduling. Which is 15 pages out of 200+.
All the students attending the course are going to the director of studies and complaining next week. This is unacceptable. If it was a good book, sure. But the book has the same exact information as multiple free e-books we've found.
Ridiculous.15 -
Talk with a co-worker who has a bit of a motivational problem.
Him: if I had more fun, I would be more productive.
Me: you're not here for fun, that's why they pay us.
Him: how are you motivated?
Me: by money.
...
A bit later.
Him: do you plan for retirement some day?
Me: no. By then, there won't be retirement anymore. We will eat fried rats in the street.
He starts understanding why I'm wearing black metal shirts.10 -

As a side project, I've been helping out a friend build a website for free.
friend: I need more of your commitment for this project. We're about to get a huge client!

I've been working in a company for two tears, builsing it from ground up as a CTO with a CEO and COO. Two years in, with 60 people on board I was managing a project which was bringing serious profit into the company, and they decided to cut me off. Reason: they don't trust me anymore, real reason: CEO wanted more money for himself and less money control from me and the other guy.
Turned out fine as it made me start my own business.1 -
A product owner recently joined the team and wants to run Google Ads on the website just to make a little more money.
We have 4-5 features already built that would have gotten the job done but he's focusing more on selling out user's data to advertising companies, and he put those features in the backlog.
I know I'm just a developer but I took the website development when it was nothing and put it where it is now. It has 8000 subscribers paying $19.99 each every month.7 -
Finally became a ++ supporter! I had resolved to do it when one of my houses sold. Unfortunately the way it worked out I lost a ton of money. Lost a ton of other things too but that is another story. At least my monthly bills are lower now!
I love this community. Even with the more mainstream stuff coming it remains on of the best ones I interact with.1 -
Tesla lost $879M in 2020. Tesla is not profitable.
In USA, gas cars automakers are legally required to give money to EV makers, like Tesla, that has 100% EV fleet. Tesla reported making $727M in 2020. But, other automakers gave it $1.6B. Tesla lost money. They lost $879M.
Tesla manages to lose money even without competition and with all that dotations. Imagine what happens when the competition in EV arises from other automakers? Then, dotations will stop. Tesla had no competition and had dotations. They're not gonna get any dotations anymore, and they will have rising competition.
They're gonna die.
In 2020, in Europe, VW sold more ELECTRIC cars than Tesla. And then you ask why I don't buy Tesla stocks. That's why.47 -
Now that I am coding for money, the motivation to learn and build new things is gone. It has become all about money for me now. I get tired after coding all day and I can’t open my personal laptop to learn new things and do some more.. well.. coding.
Will I ever get that motivation back? Because I have some good ideas in my mind. Just can’t seem to start working on those ideas.8 -
Ah.. the beauty of clean code.
I wrote a very cleanly written program two years ago. Proper variable names, not too many, right naming, right design pattern,.. Now I come back to it and I am able to instantly figure out the code again. It only took me half a minute.
The importance of clean code... that's something the industry needs to understand more. Well, then there's the money issue. lol5 -
Man the senior dev where I work produces the most half baked shit solutions but I guess management loves em because he produces results.
Like Holy fuck this whole place just has a raging hard on for Microsoft products. Plus management won't spend any money on dealing with any of the tech debt and our prod solution is just to erect more monoliths.
Someone please end my suffering5 -

I started working for a company something around 1-2 months ago, they said because I don't have any experience with their stack, my salary will be lower than other team members. I said there is no problem and started my work. My first task was refactoring codes that their experienced programmers have wrote. My second task was extracting data layer from views. (They use Laravel and MVC architecture and they get data directly in views, not controllers). So, by end of the month when I talked with my boss I said I should get more money because I was better than your experienced programmers. He refused my request so I said I will not work with your team anymore :)
Anyway, never accept a job if you know you deserve more money than what they say will give you.
P.S: Sorry for my bad English. English is not my native language5 -
Apple... Isn't it obvious?
They once built machines and software that were tested and ready for customers but they went into a direction where saving money and generating more income has the highest priority.
The more recent the version (hard- and software) the more unstable it became. On top of that the crap they produce gets more expensive each iteration. I do own a 2015 MB Pro, that's it. I used to own:
- iPhone X
- MB Pro 2017
- Apple Watch
- Apple TV
- iPad Pro
... All at the same time ... But I sold everything and switched (back) to Android and Linux and no tablet at all. The MB Pro I own is just my travel notebook because of battery life.
I'm very disappointed of Apple's strategical direction and that's why I'm boycotting it as good as I can.13 -
Did an app for my college.
Everyone liked the features in it.
But when it came to the money part, (I didn't ask the actual cost, I only asked then 10% of actual standard cost) they were like improve it more, do this do that ("for free").
I held onto "If you're good at something, don't do it for free".
Just wasted my time in developing that.2 -
Sure Amazon, 0.02$/GB * 0.000120 GB = 0.01$, not 0.0000024$, sure, that's right.
0.05$ for what amounts to less than 2MB of data transfer in total (there's two more lines like that in the bill).
Eat a bag of dicks.
Free tier my ass, if I wanted to spend money I'd rather use Azure.3 -
I see people earning $10k to add small features that take no more than a week worth of work and here I am making full fledged custom ecommerce sites for $1k.

My ex boss wants me to finish some stuff stuff for his company, which means month or two or more without getting paid, while my current job pays me 5 times more then my previous job.. No way I'll make my priority something that doesn't even give some money. Yes I'm young, yes I learned a lot in your company,but I am paying my bills, I have to eat something, and there is no fucking way I'm going to spend that much time in something that gives me nothing.3

Went in for a recruiter led hunt for architect-level positions. Got all the way through two companies, two offers. Then out of nowhere a third offer shows up, way more money, control. Choices were accept a higher offer, or do a final interview with a CTO and let them know there's a more competitive offer for a position I was pretty sure would have no actual authority given the attitude of the people I talked to.
I bailed on the recruiter and took the better gig. Felt a little bad, assuaged guilt with expensive booze, cars. -
Put a counter based on the number and average salaries of the attendants on screen. The meeting won't be more productive but the management will see how much money they are wasting with all the unnecessary meetings.3

NEW TALES FROM THE FUCKING CRYPT. It's disgusting...
... how managers keep to invest money into totally useless gadgets at the company to keep themselves motivated with stupid toys, tech and gear. WHY in fucks name would you not spend the money on hiring more devs and a dev consultant?
It's funny how they presented the stats first: "yea well we have ten big projects in dev right now" (we are FIVE FUCKING PEOPLE, tells you everything, right) "... BUT WE HAVE BOUGHT NEW SCOOTERS FOR THE COMPANY!".
Ok... why though? Who would actually use those things except the ones that bought them. Just another way of spending more money to reduce the promised employee return on the company's profit...2 -
I'm really sick of the "six-figure" advertisement that the industry uses to encourage more people to go into programming. The amount of people who hate coding with a passion but are in it because they want money is staggering. A lot of them end up dropping out. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who dearly loves this field. Truthfully, this approach won't resolve our retention problems.2

More money than I ever made in my life before.
I don't know if this should be a happy statement or a sad one.
The minimum wage in 1963 worked out to 23 dollars an hour, so hey, I can't be doing too bad.14 -
The bartender stole one euro from me. (Just didn't give me the rest of my money)
So like the awkward nerd that I am, I left and will just sulk and never go back there. I thought this was my new nook. Turns out, no more.

Accepted a feature request that practically doubled the workload without asking for more money, on account of trying to be fair to a customer who was working through a translator.
Only to get stiffed on 3/4 of the money agreed to in the first place.
Only saving grace was everything was on my servers, so I took him down for non-payment.1 -
They are paying me 6€/h, to develop in fucking FoxPro, as a freelancer, illegally.
I don't know how to tell them I'd make way more money as a dogsitter (and also enjoy it way more).
It all began as a favor for my old company, "we really need it plz plz" and then I became a slave.15 -
I worked with a developer for months. He was senior to me; on more money than me and had way more experience. I spent at least 25% of my time explaining the most basic stuff to him. Things like 'no, that's not how a cache works', 'no, you shouldnt be doing string concatenation inside a loop', 'no you've completely written the wrong thing because you didn't listen'
When he left, he claimed to have finished off a feature for our application. We dove into it, rewrote it, made it more efficient, the code cleaner, the documentation more succinct and the logic more obvious. When I say we, I mean me and a student, and by me and a student, I mean the student with some very light prodding from me.4 -
On iOS 11, Apple is no longer allowing you to open apps that are 32 bit. Apple should have given all the developers with 32-bit apps free access to the developer program rather than forcing them to pay a $99 fee to publish a 64-bit version of their app.
This would’ve made better business sense for them as publishers would have had an opportunity to create new apps and see more revenue coming in from upgraded apps. Ultimately more money for Apple. Not sure what dumb fool at Apple HQ thought this was a good idea.6 -
The amount of "full stack" developers I've seen that know nothing about networking, servers or security has broken me inside over the years. Like cmon man either learn that stuff or stick to doing frontend. Don't put user's data at risk just because you wanna earn a bit more money11

Yesterday all management was sick or away on vacation or training.
All work continued as normal. Everyone is an adult and knows what to do.
Made me question if we actually need to have soooo many people in management positions.
Funny to think that they get paid more.
Ironically when a developer is sick, real money is lost and progress stops in a particular area.

Netbeans is like the girl you pull at 3am in the kebab shop. You wouldn't brag about it, its bloated and bug ridden but it gets you there without having to shell out any more money.2

I really don't like billing time for things I am not really sure how to do and need time to educate myself on. This happens more often than my wallet is comfortable with and I spend more time learning than making money. You all complaining about shit code from coworkers and about fucking WordPress. Looks different, but know what? Answer is the same.
Money.
Let me explain.
For example, you were born in USA. You can choose any profession, and if you became pro - you will be payed great. Looks nice, isn't it?
But if you were born in Russia, India, somewhere in Africa, whatever, you can be businessman, coder or you can suck a dick to the end of you life.
Not that great, yeah?
You are looking around and see great people with their own dreams and talents. But then you ask them "to which faculty are you going?" Answer is obvious. And that's how shitcoders are born.
And yeah, about WordPress. I'm mobile developer, I just can't understand how awful it is (or not, idunno). The only thing I know - if I were PHP developer, I could earn twice more than now. But why I didn't choose that way? Because I REALLY LOVE MY WORK. Everyday is good, I'm working at weekends often, because I want.
So please, shut up. You could never work with WordPress, but you motherfucker CHOOSE IT. You could switch to node, go, Java. Why the flying fuck you didn't? Oh yeah, MONEY. So please, shut up.
Devrant isn't for crying girls complaining about shit they did themselves. (No sexism, just metaphor, sorry girls)10 -
Woke up this morning to Amazon charging me over $100 bucks for the web services I used at my Hackathon last month. What the hell, I thought the free tier covered that?13

I have a dev job and I earn good. More than enough at this age when I'm single.
My brother lost his business and has been sitting idle for more than 3 months now. Family gets cash but brother has nothing to do. He's into business and I don't even know what's going on in his life. I can help him with money and all but no idea how to ask, I'm younger and it will require a lot amount of guts for me to him, even when I ask I don't think he will tell me straight.4 -
i've got my first job after getting out of college. not a great package. I'm learning more, will get experience. i have plans for freelancing and seek a better job. I'm an Indian.
what really upsets me is that I just discovered that I've no knowledge in finance. I'm feeling insecure, afraid and depressed. I'm browsing for some youtube channels, books and podcasts to get some some knowledge about finance and real estate.
all I have is a saving account in SBI bank, I just know how to take money out of it with my debit card and transfer money with online banking
how do u guys do ur finance, where do u invest. do u invest in stock market. insurance?? help me out. i'm fucked.
never thought i can be so stupid, I hate myself, never even thought I'll need financial intelligence.
are there more people like me.

Hot Take:
Subscription based products are exactly why we don't see major break-throughs in software anymore.
*** I am warning you, don't mention AI in the comments, I am gonna fucking lose it. ***
Tell me one thing, If you spent thousands to create a product that you now have a good subscriber base on, why would you invest money into making another? Why wouldn't you just consider improving the product at hand and selling it to more people to create additional profit?
In the 90s we used to get any software on CDs/DVDs and you actually got to own it. Meaning that the company can only take money from you ONCE and never again (almost). This also meant that the companies knew that soon they'd have to come up with something else that will make them money, thus them creating new software every couple or so years, some even creating ground-breaking software.
But then, there is thing called MONOPOLY.
We will never get another music app than Spotify or Apple music, because they are just too far ahead. They're built on subscription model.
You can probably think of more examples of great companies building great products and moving them to subscription model and therefore never creating another software, because frankly, why take the risk to lose money when you can gain more money by improving the product at hand?
We will never get the same frequency of good games coming to market from established companies like RockStar. Why should they bothered to make GTA 6 when they can sell millions of worth of Shark Cards every month and rake in the profits?
Subscriptions have totally killed off software creativity and motivation for devs/companies to create great software.17 -
All companies are the same.
Some are a little more transparent than others but if there is a board of directors, the final interest is money, and only money.
So all companies will betray their costumers if that means more profit.
Microsoft? Google? Amazon? In the end they are all the same.
I don't even trust people, let alone a brand.4 -
Nothing breaks a dev's heart more than when you plan to spend your day off programming and work asks you to do a full day .-.
Why must everything cost money .-.1 -

Decrypt api responses in an iOS app which my “senior” dev thinks it is more secure to encrypt responses in stead of setting up a proper SSL cert (they use plain http to save money 🙄)
They disable the encryption since it does not function as we wanted and set up SSL instead🙄4 -
Project managers suck, they don't know anything about programming and development, at least they should know the basics, it's the worst and most stupid job, and the worst thing is that they make more money than a developer.2

Spent 2 days refactoring code written by our "offshore team". I've done refactoring on the same code in the past, probably upto about a week in total of refactoring now. The code looked like it was written by someone who had literally just finished their first "Hello World" app - loads of code blocks copied and pasted instead of declaring reusable functions.
The whole thing should have been done by us in the first place.
And yet our money-conscious company wants to employ more of these developers. Cheaper than us? Sure. Quantity over quality though, but I guess money is all that matters to the big cheese1 -

It is really not so repulsive to see the poor asking for money as to see the rich asking for more money. And advertisement is the rich asking for more money. A man would be annoyed if he found himself in a mob of millionaires, all holding out their silk hats for a penny; or all shouting with one voice, “Give me money.” Yet advertisement does really assault the eye very much as such a shout would assault the ear. “Budge’s Boots are the Best” simply means “Give me money”; “Use Seraphic Soap” simply means “Give me money.” It is a complete mistake to suppose that common people make our towns commonplace, with unsightly things like advertisements. Most of those whose wares are thus placarded everywhere are very wealthy gentlemen with coronets and country seats, men who are probably very particular about the artistic adornment of their own homes. They disfigure their towns in order to decorate their houses.

when you confirm with a friend that 2 different members of their team who left didn't contribute shit (one of which got into a meeting with management with them telling them to work) , but they also made more money than both of you and are now making more money in more successful companies in more senior roles
is it possible to learn this power /palpatine1 -
I think a lot of pissed off devs are working at companies that see them as cost centres. Happy devs are at companies that see them as profit centres.
Like, a cereal company may have a tech team for their website and ordering and whatever, but having the best website isn't going to make them more money. Selling more cereal is.
If a company sells video processing software, having the best software is going to make them money. Tech is a profit centre.
So, anyway, I'm looking for a new job. Any rec for profit centre tech teams?2 -
Only one goal : earn more money.
- Not to work for friendship, equity, kindness, craziness, etc. Code more for sole purpose to earn more
- Accept more projects whether I can develop or not to earn more
- Learn to manage and work with freelancers and agencies to earn more
- Work for anyone and any type of project suitable for my knowledge as long as the offer is good to earn more
Etc. You got the gist.
My language for 2020 is money :3

So I really hate iOS programming. I'm in school and all my devices for dev are Microsoft based and fuck trying to use hackintosh. Which is worse?
- Staying at a company you helped build because you have an emotional attachment to it, even if it's not as good to work for now, people are leaving every week and pay is under market rate.

"I look for three things in a project: 1) Compelling work; 2) fun client; 3) astronomical fees. However, to have a successful project, I really only need two out of three. For example, I’ll do great work with fun people for nothing and still feel rewarded. Or, I’ll do great work for a mean, stupid client for outrageous money. Or, I’ll do boring work with somebody I like a lot for more money than one can imagine. Anytime I’m faced with only one of the three it’s time to rethink the relationship. Actually, it’s time to move on." - Lowell Williams

Oh man. When I look for a job after I'm done with school, I need to watch out for those "pay-per-line" bullshit contracts. More lines? Got told 2 weeks after interview that I came across as "money-oriented" by a company which gives a graduate salary which is 25% above average. They thought I'd only do what they told me to do and nothing more.
Sure, that's why I've achieved 15% above a first throughout my degree whilst not being paid a penny: I'm lazy and in it for the money.
The main reason I wanna be paid well is so that I'm less likely to be surrounded by people who aren't that committed to doing a good job. And if I am surrounded by slackers, at least I got some cash to wipe my tears with. If that makes me "money-oriented" then I'm stuck for ideas.5 -

The Online Marketers I work with sometimes ask how I know so much about certain things.
Well, while you guys were partying in your late teens/early 20s and playing sports with your friends, I was sitting home on nights and weekends learning about computers, networks and code.
It only sucks they make a shit ton more money than me and work about 4 hours a day.
At least I'm making more than most of my peers and probably 90% more than people I went to high school with.2 -
What's wrong with Google and Facebook selling my data, what are the effects directly affecting me from them selling my data? Why should I care that someone is making money off of something from me that doesn't affect me at all?

Last month my company said that there's a mediclaim policy to include your parents in it too, and it was a mere amount of money. So I added it to my policy. I mean the beauty in our industry is that you can learn almost everything online and for free. You learn some basics and then you build upon that knowledge to build something more complex. Yeah like if I can learn game development in a week or be a designer in the same amount of time. When I said no he told me if I didn't want to build a porn site, I kindly rejected again and told him that I like to build tools that are useful for other people then he said that he just wants to make people spend money on internet like if money was going to rain quickly. I didn't even ask but I'm sure he wasn't going to pay me for development. I'm sure that when I see him he's going to tell me more "Fantastic ideas"2

Talking about stupidity, my friend on whatsapp even share his bank online transaction on his stories, I told him to be careful with those sensitive information, but he's ignoring it.
I think he more care to show off his "bulge-wallet" than protect his own money.
Find anything stupid than that?9 -
2 things every java developer hates developing with yet wishes they had more of personally: time and money

Being a zoomer means leaving your favorite indie musician on repeat overnight for them to earn a bit more money.
Being a zoomer means never leaving a one-star review on your Uber driver because if you do this, they fire them, put them on an internal blacklist that is unofficially shared between such bloody companies and they'll never find a job and probably die of starvation.9 -
Been at the same company for 2 years, this has been the worst day, hands down. Probably going to be fired soon, or end up quitting. Yaay more time for personal projects, yaay not having money.2

Just had a meeting about what our product's vision was going to be. Without actually talking about what that vision was. It was a statement of the business goal amd some nonsense about how we were going to pick tickets based on reaching said business goal.
Like, yeah. That's what we have been doing. You are not new here so why are you acting like it. And yet these people are the ones who make more money than me. I need to start saying more obvious things. Maybe I'll be made a director.4 -

I work at a small company (4 devs, CTO, a senior, me: mid level, and a new junior dev). Junior and I handle the client projects and the Senior and CTO handle the overall platform and server deployments and such. Our senior dev just gave his 2 weeks notice. I was told they are not replacing him and now ALL of his tasks have been pushed onto me on top of all my already full plate. My issue is, although I am excited to learn about the upper management and deployment stuff, they (CTO and CEO) just dumped all these tasks onto me without even asking if I wanted the added responsibility and also told me there is no monetary bonus for taking it all on. Am I right in being a little mad that I was not even asked if I wanted it and it was just assumed I would handle it all without any bonus or monetary promotion?5

Money or growth?
I'm mid level SE, looking to get promoted to Senior Level in January 2023.
(context: there are 4 levels before Engineering Manager or Software Architect in our company - 1 (or junior), 2 (or mid), 3 (or senior), 4 (or lead)...
But my total pay (way too good for my age at my place, but Software Engineers specially in FAANG and FAANG-like companies are overpaid here compared to the rest of the market.
My company, an Amazon's competitor in local market, earlier used to pay almost same as Amazon (or slightly higher to attract talent).
Recently, due to splurge of remote jobs, the MNCs started opening more offices (likes of Apple, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Goldman, Morgan etc) hence the salaries increased even more.
Amazon for example, recently gave 33% increment on base pay recently.
Taking their base salary equal to my total pay (including stocks, bonus).
Should I switch for money or stay for growth?2 -
What's more important to you guys. Getting the chance get knowledge or make money ?
I recently graduated as the second best, making a little less then the average (in Germany) but get all kinds of certifications and courses for free and working on a 90million Dollar Projekt using modern technology (Java)
I'm totally happy with this situation for the start of my professional career what u think5 -
- Remake all my hacky products and finally make those adjustments and improvements I always forget about. (A shitton of maintenance that I always YOLO my way through)
- Potentially finally give digital drawing and design a go as a second career (if money permits, also)
- Move to middle of Asia, dead center of Kazakhstan or wherever there are gypsy tribes, learn their language and teach their kids about computers and robots and make a lot of products that'd make a gypsy's life easier. Or rather, create a modern gypsy life that does not override their traditional ways, rather integrates with it. (This is one of my dreams, which I know will never come true. Gypsies and nomads do settle more and more each year and their culture is basically going extinct. Plus, govts around the world dislike them greatly)
- Do a lot more research projects in robotics. Literally make everyday robotic items and then sell them. (with a sprinkle of AI/ML, that is)
All the above would also need lots of money and effort tho. -
Don't remember who recommended me wes bos, but generally it's ok, you do learn a lot, even things not directly mentioned in the usual tutorials, but the amount of mistakes he makes, makes it look like hes just started learning it himself and now tries to just quickly shoot out a course out thin air to just bust some more money up his pocket2

I'm in a bit of a slump. I need 'content' for a unity game I'm making. In the game you play as a banker and you collect money you can spend on upgrades. There's also a vault in which you can store money and collect interest. I'd like for there to be more to this game so it's not just a clicker game where you collect upgrade, collect, upgrade repetitively. One thing I did think of but would like to try and avoid is a simulated stock market because of the coding difficulty. I'd anyone has any suggestions it'd be much appreciated!2

Answer this questionnaire.
Be 100% honest and real:
1. has a degree helped you learn anything useful?
2. has a degree helped you get a job? not because of knowledge but because of degree?
3. was it worth it going to college to get the degree?
4. do you regret going to college to get your degree?
5. do you believe a degree has value?
6. by the nature of economy, the more something exists in circulation (e.g. money), is it worth less or more?
6.1. if every year there are more and more college degrees in existence, is the value of degree worth less or more?
7. do you believe you are hired to work a job because of your knowledge or your degree?39 -
Asked prof for LORs for grad school application. Once he submitted 6 lors, I sent him a chart in email stating what schools are done, what are pending. STUPID MOTHERFUCKER refused to give me any more LORs because he suddenly thinks I've become un-recommendable due to sending him an email. I want to rant.
I don't have anything to be mad at. And that's what's making me mad.
My job's going well. I am making good money, more and more each year. My health's good. I have a good body. I get laid every now and then. I enjoy being single.
And yet it's making me mad and makes me feel empty, for some reason. And every day it's growing in size too.8 -

The money definitely doesn't make up for the amount of stupidity you come across with some people.

Feels awsome to have earned a higher standing as an apprentice in the eyes of my Supervisor. I dont get more money but they now let me fix/add stuff that was made by fancy Uni students as theyr project. Appart from the mandatory apprenticeship stuff im treated like a normal dev at the company :D. I'm very happy about that

As i was shitting on toilet I realized something very important. This could be THE answer.
The question: what is the formula for achieving success? I realized this must be THE ultimate answer:
Money + connections + luck >= success
Why?
MONEY:
You must have money to make more money.
CONNECTIONS:
Some average joe can tell his friend Cockty to phone call his friend Dickson who's a good friend with Cumston to message his millionaire friend Asslicker who is gonna help the average joe succeed.
LUCK:
No matter what you do or how hard you work, how many achievements you have or degrees, you can spend 10 million dollars on a project -- and still fail because you're not lucky.
Let's calculate this probability:
have = 1
missing = -1
money = 0
connections = 0
luck = 0
success = 1
money + connections + luck >= success
Case 1 (have everything):
have + have + have >= success
1 + 1 + 1 >= 1
3 >= 1 ✅
Case 2 (no money):
missing + have + have >= success
-1 + 1 + 1 >= 1
1 >= 1 ✅
Case 3 (no connections):
have + missing + have >= success
1 - 1 + 1 >= 1
1 >= 1 ✅
Case 4 (no luck):
have + have + missing >= success
1 + 1 - 1 >= 1
1 >= 1 ✅
Case 5 (no money, no connections):
missing + missing + have >= success
-1 - 1 + 1 >= 1
-1 >= 1 ❌
Case 6 (no money, no luck):
missing + have + missing >= success
-1 + 1 - 1 >= 1
-1 >= 1 ❌
Case 7 (no connections, no luck):
have + missing + missing >= success
1 - 1 - 1 >= 1
-1 >= 1 ❌
Case 8 (no money, no connections, no luck):
missing + missing + missing >= success
-1 - 1 - 1 >= 1
-3 >= 1 ❌
We have: 4 possible outcomes that we want, k=4
Out of total: 8 possible combinations, n=8
Probability of achieving success using this formula is: P(A) = k/n = 4/8= 0.5 * 100% = 50% chance of being successful in this shit life
This is correct in theory. HOWEVER:
Case 1: someone having
- a lot of money
- a lot of connections
- a lot of luck
In practicality is damn near IMPOSSIBLE
Maybe 1 in 100 million people are born like this. That's 100,000,000 people / 8,000,000,000 people = 0.0125 * 100% = 1.25% of people are this blessed and gifted in life. This might be even less so we can ignore this probability as a possible outcome and average it out to realistic average joe daily life.
Therefore giving us a total of 7 combinations, 3 possibilities to succeed in this shit life
So: k/n = 3/7 = 0.4285 * 100% = 42.85% chance to be successful in this shit life
Mathematically proven how life is pure trash
Funny enough we can round it to 42%. And 42 is the answer to life, universe and everything in existence4 -

TLDR: more fake money!
There's more and more assets being created in the crypto economy," Armstrong said during the call. Is anyone here using something like "moqups"? I found it just recently and love the idea of it all being in one place with its own project folders, but the thing that is throwing me off is the money to what you get ratio, since it would be nice to have something that combines trello+adobe xd+flowcharts and more across devices with near unlimited space.2

SO many stories... One thing he would do is a few months before review time he would start trying to prepare me by saying things are tight and who knows if we will get raises this year. Then during the review he'd offer nothing or next to nothing because money was tight. I'd accept whatever and never ask for more. Then he'd go to the director and say I tried getting a 20% raise and say I was angry, to make me look bad and make it look like he saved the company money.

To stay a dev (can do the role with my eyes closed) or take on the architecture role for this company that is sinking like the titanic.

Can people help me please,
Which one is better Android development (Android studio) or IOS development (Xcode)
I learned a bit of both(still a beginner) and here is what i think so far
Pros:
-Android is more wide spread and is more flexible also i have an Android device (testing)
-IOS development is really fun and intuitive and more money is paid to developers because not everyone has a mac in my country.
Con:
-Android studio is messy and java is really dull imo
-IOS requires a developer account which is really expensive in my country.
Any help is much appreciated even if it is a personal opinion10 -

The work is supposedly a lot more and also more stressful than my current one (software developer). Imagine your company would spend 100$ more per employee to rent a bigger, nicer office. Imagine how much additional space you'd have there. Maybe individual offices for everybody, or at least not more than two or three employees per office? Telephone booths for long calls, or a library to work in absolute silence, to do research, or to study something new there.
How would that affect your productivity and overall happiness? How much better you'd feel there? How much more relaxed would you be? How much less sick days would you have, and how much money would your company save resp. make more due to higher productivity?
Or would you rather have a salary raise of 100$?3 -
My friend (not technical) thinks eosio is going to be the new internet. step 2: tax evasion; just stop paying taxes, why give away your money when you can just keep it?
step 3: print money; why get a job when you can just print money? say goodbye to that annoying 9-5!
step 4: invest in the cryptocurrency $bigblackballs. $bigblackballs is the new bitcoin! it will take over all other cryptocurrencies in the market and make everyone rich. $bigblackballs to the moon! get on the wave while you still can.

So I am pretty fair dev at Java and have been doing freelancing for sometime apart from normal full time job.
Got a client , a well funded one, who raised a decent chunk of money recently.
Got me do a couple of different areas right from refactoring and bumping their performance to all the way setting up AWS Services like RDS,Lambdas,Dynamo,SQS.
It was going good , money was coming in for the initial part.
Thinking that money is not the concern here , I accepted work at runtime and gave quotations about the additional work.
However now that all is done and deployed , the client simply refuses to pay me the money and has ghosted me horribly than my ex ever did.
I have access to their GitHub,AWS(I setup myself).
Need suggestions of whats the best way I can fuck them up if they decide to not pay even after a few more professional polite attempts I do .
sidenote : They had a pretty dumb db design and blindly had resorted to services in AWS and the pricing is still a major point of concern for them.10 -

Everyone wants some kind of super expertise but they don’t want to invest to allow people to become experts
I like incentive to learn large framework code that is os
And inventive to invest time to fix
And I think this should be finding that is added to an economy by a CB
Adding to the monetary expansion and contraction equation
The more improvements that work and are accepted
The more bugs that get fixed etc
The more people working on these projects the more money generated that they can spend to prop up their host economy
Of course you’d need some considerable oversight to prevent corruption and laundering or outright theft by dirty fucked up chomo whores pretending that work is there own and destroying people who are enthusiastic or happy like the garbage they are -

Not exactly a rant, but I'm wondering where to go next with my learning.
I'm a c# dev and I want to get more into massive, scalable, distributed application development.
I sort of want to be with the "cool kids" i.e. open source, node.js, docker, scala, you name it. I get that open source moves quickly, but I get the feeling that every new framework is a fad.
Then again there is the corporate world with shitloads of money who are invested in .net and will very soon want people who can redesign their software so that their management can use all the buzz words.
I'm thinking into get into consulting and claim my slice of pie there by designing their solutions to go on the cloud so they can throw even more money at microsoft.
Anyway, I'm doing a bit of soul searching so feel free to throw in your 2 cents1 -
why is this company so resistant to moving to the cloud? millions are constantly poured into their poorly maintained server infrastructure, and instead of cutting costs, they're busy pouring more money into this godforsaken "project". oh, funniest part is the company is in the depths of making losses. smfh.4

Assuming that the spirit of the question means that you are required to actually build something instead of sitting around doing nothing as a requirement for your impossible superpower, I would, in order:
1. Develop hundreds of shitty mobile games and flood the Android market, making millions of dollars.
2. Use this to fund competitors to every major tech company in the world, making billions of dollars.
3. Dump a very large portion of this money into a research group for a complete anti-aging treatement.
4. Sell this only to the top bidders. Make more billions.
5. Use the money to colonize another planet, perhaps in another solar system entirely. Create a transport line that provides free doses of aforementioned treatement. Bring only scientists and their families. Create a utopia from scratch.
6. Develop machines to automate all aspects of life. Live in utopia with no need for money. Allow everyone to persue passions with unlimited time and nearly unlimited resources.1 -
wasting time on trying to debug a flaky end to end test that flakes occasionally on a corner case a customer will likely never see because somebody else has a hard on for testing instead of working on something useful or that would make the company more money

I know this is an extremely dumb question. Hypothetically, if a plane full of billionaires carrying only cash crashes mysteriously and cannot be found, now that the money is lost, what happens in the economy. Like how do the banks know how much money is gone and what do they do about it. Like mass inflation? Why can’t they just print an approximate Amount of money to fill up the system again, and if so what happens when they find the plane in a hundred years and the money comes back cuz now we have too much? This all came from wondering how they put the new coins with the kings face in without making the economy blow up, like I would assume they take the same amount of money that are idk too old or something and replace it with the same amount of new money but in that case how do they know and what do they do with the old coins now that they’re out of circulation. If anyone can answer my questions pls help. I might reply to your answer with more questions sorry lmao.10
