My brother did something so stupid, I'm even doubting my relationship to him.
So yesterday he goes of to a friend of his and takes his MBP with him.
Later that evening he messages me : dude i got trolled big time, but reaaaally big time.
I ask him what's up, and what he replied to me, i still cant comprehend.
He said that he had lag on his mb when playing a game so he went to the internet and he came across a post with a command ... 'sudo rm -rf /' and someone else replying 'thanks bud, solved the problem for me'. So he went ahead and removed his root partition lol . I was like : WHY WOULD YOU EVEN ENTER A COMMAND YOU DONT KNOW WITHOUT LOOKING IT UP.
It made me think of another post here 'sudo like you have no backups'
I SWEAR THIS JUST HAPPENED:
My Teacher: *Sends a random programming question to solve on the class group*
Fellow Classmate: *sends solution within a minute*
My Teacher: Good, but everybody knows how to use the internet only a few know how to use the brain. We now know which category you belong to.
Reading some of the wk50 rants makes my blood run cold. brrrrr. They're terrifying.
While my story goes just like this.
Didn't know our manager(let's call him R) messaged us in our group chat that he won't make it to office for that day.
My account replied "Let's have moment of silence for those who left us. R, you will be missed. :'( Thank you for everything.".
I didn't notice the message until lunch time and my co-devs (with much back-slapping and laughing) told me I'm a gem. -_-
I just went to get some coffee, forgot to lock my unit and came back a murderer.
AND It was only my 2nd month on the job.6
When my friend trolled me just because I was a noob with Linux command line...
To fix your problem you must run:
sudo apt-get purge sudo
And then I tried reinstalling sudo with....
sudo apt-get install sudo 😲14
I feel I am getting paid for getting trolled (you read that right) - I have had now two completely seperate clients, a month apart - paying me hundreds of dollars for "testing".
I have explained both of them atleast for a total of 8 hours why there's "sandbox" accounts and that the "virtual money" is the same as "real money", so later when you go live, it will be the exact same, just without the need of actually testing with actual money.
I even as a last suggestion asked to atleast be developing with $0.01 transactions (to literally not run out of additional money, because of the different packages), but they wanted it to be as "real" as possible.
I just read the rant: "I use base64 to encrypt my passwords". Found it hilarious!
But I can't believe the amount of people taking it seriously in the comments section! I see just one of these possible explanations.
A) They want to show off
B) They are unable to detect sarcasm
C) They have mastered trolling and I'm stupid
In case it's C, wouldn't this rant be considered as reverse trolling? 😎5
So I trolled one of my co-workers who has an iPhone saying "Buy a real phone" .. and now people are picking that around the office and throwing it at everyone who uses Apple products .. "buy a real laptop".. etc4
My programming teacher told me we need to solve problems using functions. Theoretically, main is a function .-.6
Got rebuked by the Java teacher today at the University for using proper long names for variables in the code. She though I was just wasting time being lazy in the lab. "If something can be achieved by a single character, why type that long variable again and again?". *Everyone in class laughs*
Then, there was an error in my code [turned out to be long long int in Java is weird], and I had no clue what was going wrong [I'm a week old in Java]. So, I had initially called her to help. She made me change all private methods and attributes to public. When asked "why?", got trolled again.
Now, I know it's okay, and not that I really care about what my classmates think of me, but getting this kind of treatment really sucks. And if this is how future software developers are crafted today, maintainability is surely going to be an issue tomorrow.
Maybe staying in this stupid country was my worst career choice. I should have tried harder and gone abroad.12
I’m going through the book automate the boring stuff and I’m working on the chapter with web scraping right.
Well I wanted to just count all of the comic links that are in the xkcd archive as a small exercise to help me get used to and better learn web scraping.
I go through hell trying to do this but after more than a few hours later I finally have done it I returned every link of ONLY the comics, so it was time to start counting them.
I implemented the counting. The total number as of today is 2279 and it my code counted 2278, and I started to lose it.
So I go through this motherfucker manually to see where my loops count and the count on the tags start to differ. I found it, whoever made it went from 403 to 405. The euphoria I felt for this incredibly small task was incredible. (Still haven’t pieced it together yet)
I found the email of the guy who I assume owns the site and I started writing an email that basically said “hey the count of your comics is off by one and you made me rethink existence trying to figure out why, you skipped number 404-”
I look at the gap between 403 and 405 Then the words “Error 404 Not Found” popped into my head. I proceeded to scream for a second and stopped writing the email and now I’m trying to come to terms with this.
TL:DR the guy who runs xkcd comics trolled me with a simple error 404 joke3
I trolled my friend by telling him that there's a 100 MB data transfer restriction on Windows right now because of the Ransomware that's floating around the internet.
I can't believe it worked and now he thinks he couldn't copy anime or games from me because it exceeds 100mb file size.
What's your best troll moments to people who're not computer techies?2
I have been trolled, criticized, belittled on Reddit / YouTube, etc, but never on devRant. Anyone care to theorize why?7
Once I participated in a vacation kayak tour. Some other kid was sure that it was not possible to dual-boot as each OS installed would take up 100% CPU load for a brief moment when turning the machine on. This turned into a serious argument spanning the entire vacation. The fact that I had a working windows/GNUlinux install on a friend‘s PC did not convince him.
Me being an insecure pre-teen made sure to send him video evidence when I got back home (never received a reply ofc).
Looking back, I‘m not sure whether he was dumb or I just got trolled really well.2
Next time onwards... Please try to solve the problem yourself before writing a bad review... Or you'll get trolled like this guy xD... He didn't know how to disable vibration lol...2
Me: I tried to catch this bug for two days
Other: Let me show
5 seconds later...
Other: Oh, you just used the wrong string type
Freenas update from 11.1 to 11.2 beta 2
They added experimental smb direct / multichannel support, yay.
Me tries to connect to the smb share:
->Connection timed out 🤔
->Connection refused 😐
Google foo ....
->Nope, no connection 😔
"Failed to retrieve list of shares from server"
Reinstalls freenas to be sure it's not some janky install.
Google some more
*Like a year later*
Look into /etc/samba/smb.conf
Client max protocol = NTLM1
Who thought that to be a good Idea!?
It's the default Manjaro smb conf from the official repository by the way.
Didn't even know there was a setting for max client protocol.
Thought it was a server only config.
Nope, some motherfucker trolled me long and hard this time. 😩
But back to getting smb direct working on my setup.
Thunar gvfs is like it's own completely separate thing.
Smb status, and all the other commands don't see any open connections anywhere.
Gvfs still connects fine to the share even though the smb.conf is deleted and everything else is complaining that there is no config.
On the one hand, it uses samba, on the other it's not actually.
Where the heck can I see the connection properties and wether rdma works or not?
Mother trucking, fracking, leg breaking piece of a dance type.1
I've been meaning to sign up on dev.to for a while now.
Finally started the sign up process. They require you to agree to follow their code of conduct which states that they will prioritize empowering the marginalized communities and in order to do that they will *not* act on complaints of reverse-isms. Reverse (sexism | racism), cisphobia, etc.
Am I the only one who thinks that this is wrong? I'm all for empowering people, tolerance and not getting trolled but outrightly rejecting complaints on topics that seem politically incorrect sounds superfluous to me. Am I interpreting something wrong? (I hope I am because in general I find the community to be nice and positive)3
!rant / Joke
RoR dev (Me): Damn, I gotta learn more about that routing DSL... Shit's powerful.
Networker: That sentence made zero sense... Did you just use technobabble? Go to marketing you dweeb.
Well, Matz really trolled the networkers there...
DSL(Ruby) = Domain Specific Language.
Routing (Rails) = Defining URL Patterns and assigning them to controllers.
Networks(As far as I understand, I only know the absolute basics there):
DSL = Digital Subscriber Line
Routing = The act of passing a packet through another network
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "WE'RE ALL MAD HERE. I'm mad. You're mad."
And the weird penguin building a rails app is mad too I guess.1
[Equifax Recruiter] - Hi, we have an exciting opportunity for you here at Equifax! Innovative... blah blah... J2EE... blah blah... latest technologies... blah blah... greenfield... blah... CORBA... (ok, there wasn't any CORBA)
[Me] - Oh Equifax... how did you get my details?
[ER] - ...
So, got call from fake windows tech support (India) just minutes after syncing my github Gmail to Windows 10 mail app. Trolled along while recording the audio, until he told me which command he wanted me to run. The I hung up and did a security scan.
Figured I'd learn something instead of just hanging up right away 😎3
So I go to a GDG for VRView tonight, and generally had a great time. I arrived on time, got set up, crushed the coding exercise, and helped a couple of people out with their code.
As is standard procedure with these kinds of events, there was a giveaway at the end - a sealed Daydream View. The guy running the event picked the winner randomly. I was #6, due to the fact that a guy came in literally 20 minutes before we wrapped. Guess who won the VR set? Yep, the dude who came in late, and sat immediately to my right, making him person #5. I'm pretty sure the words "greifer" and "twatwaffle" ran through my head as I packed up to leave. -_-
