Current PM in the morning: "Startup flexibility! I'm at the beach chilling in the sun! I trust you can do standup without me! #tech-detox #positive-energy"
Current PM in the afternoon: "ARE ALL THE FUCKING TASKS FUCKING DONE YET? THERE ARE ONLY 9 DAYS LEFT IN THE FUCKING SPRINT! WHY HAS NOTHING BEEN DEPLOYED YET?"
This is why I hate wireless earbuds: You don't have a wire available for strangling coworkers.13 -
Is it usual to not be allowed to use headphones/earbuds at work?
We cant at our offfice atleast. The explination was that IF clients come by the offfice it looks like we are having a lan party! 😂21 -
There are people in my workplace who ask "why did you set your IDE to dark theme?". How do I convince them that turning off the lights above my cubicle, lowering the screen brightness and having a dark theme is the best thing ever to concentrate?
Not to mention earbuds and a hoodie.
How do I convince them that once you turn to the Dark Side, there's no coming back?6 -
alright very funny guys
i'm so tall my bluetooth earbuds keep going slightly out of range and garbling the audio13 -
Without you, the world falls silent. It feels cold and desloate, and there's nothing to fill the void. You've been my faithful companion for many thousands of hours. Your passing pains my heart.
Rest in peace, my friend.5 -
iPhones are ridiculously picky when it comes to finding a mate- um charger. And knowing why doesn't really make it any easier to understand why. If anything it baffles me more.
So, let's start with appliances that are not phones. Think Bluetooth headsets, keyboards, earbuds, whatever. Those are simple devices. They see 5V on the VCC line and 0V on ground, and they will charge at whatever current they are meant to. Usually it will not exceed 200mA, and the USB 2.0 spec allows for up to 500mA from any USB outlet. So that's perfectly reasonable to be done without any fuss whatsoever.
Phones on the other hand are smarter.. some might say too smart for their own good. In this case I will only cover Android phones, because while they are smarter than they perhaps should be, they are still reasonable.
So if you connect an Android phone to the same 5V VCC and 0V ground, while leaving the data lines floating, the phone will charge at 500mA. This is exactly to be within USB 2.0 spec, as mentioned earlier. Without the data lines, the phone has no way to tell whether it *can* pull more, without *actually* trying to pull more (potentially frying a charger that's not rated for it). Now in an Android phone you can tell it to pull more, in a fairly straightforward way. You just short the data lines together, and the phone will recognize this as a simple charger that it can pull 1A from. Note that shorting data lines is not a bad thing, we do it all the time. It is just another term for making a connection between 2 points. Android does this right. Also note that shorted data lines cannot be used to send data. They are inherently pulled to the same voltage level, probably 0V but not sure.
And then the iPhones come in, Thinking Different. The iPhones require you to pull the data lines to some very specific voltage levels. And of course it's terribly documented because iSheep just trying to use their Apple original white nugget charger overseas and shit like that. I do not know which voltage levels they are (please let me know!), but it is certainly not a regular short. Now you connect the iPhone to, say, a laptop or something to charge. An Android phone would just charge while keeping data transmission disabled (because they can be left floating or shorted). This is for security reasons mostly, preventing e.g. a malicious computer from messing with it. An iPhone needs to be unlocked to just charge the damn thing. I'm fairly sure that that's because the data lines need to be pulled up, which could in theory enable a malicious computer to still get some information in or out of it. USB data transmission works at at least 200mV difference between the data lines. It could be more than that. So you need to unlock it.
Apple, how about you just short your goddamn data lines too like everyone else? And while you're at it, get rid of this Lightning connector. I get it, micro USB was too hard for your users. I guess they are blind pigs after all. But USB-C solved all of that and more. The only difference I can think of is that the Lightning connector can be a single board with pads on either side on the connector, while in USB-C that could be at the socket end (socket being less common to be replaced). And at the end of the day, that really doesn't matter with all the other things that will break first.
Think Different. Think Retarded. Such tiny batteries and you can't even fucking charge them properly.6 -
Recently I've had some Airpod knockoffs in the mail for about €8 while they were in a promotion. They are pretty usable, and while I do not own the authentic Airpods, my unit seems to have all its most important functions that I'd expect of a pair of Bluetooth earbuds (given that I've been using those since 2015 already, so plenty of experience with such things). Given that, the Apple Airpods'd better give me a morning blowjob for their price!
Seriously, what is the point of such Apple earbuds. For me, the important thing is that they are wireless earbuds that can operate independently or in sync as desired. It's earbuds that can be recharged on the go using some kind of portable 3.7V lithium cell in a charging dock that can directly drive the 3.7V cells in the earbuds. That's all.
Bill of materials? 2 tiny Bluetooth controllers, 2 speaker drivers, ABS injection moulding for the charger pocket thingy and the earbuds themselves, a charge controller for the "docking station", and some tiny lithium cells for each, provisioning size-capacity for whatever will still fit. That's all.
Is that worth €150? Like hell it is. And sure some capacitive sensor in the earbud for touch-based control would be useful. But guess what, even that isn't expensive! Capacitive sensing is dirt easy (https://youtu.be/mWR9Q_pTagw), and for something like the Airpods you could probably get away with 3-4 stationary capacitive touch sensor modules. Cost of that per unit if I were to design it and outsource it to China? €15 at best. Yet Apple charges €150-something for their Airpods. What the fuck?!7 -
Note to self: never EVER buy iPhone again. “It won’t stutter after a year”, they’ve said.
Right now my 6s is just one big overheating piece of mess. Right now I have to charge it 3 times a day. Resprings randomly. Very often discharges 2% per minute. All the time lacks memory. iCloud picture syncing SUCKS. The Lightning cable is the worst excuse for buying overpriced cables which will break after a half of year. The only plus is a camera, how easy it is to update the iOS, included earbuds, iMesssage (but I use WhatsApp nonetheless) and battery widget.
And that’s it.
If someone says ever again that “iOS is the best operating system, it doesn’t have any issues whatsoever”, I would say “stop doping”, because I don’t see why it’s so great. Just while typing this rant my battery decreased from 25% to 15%18 -

Work is requiring me to bust my ass, I am salaried, it is writing documentation, and my FUCKING LEFT EARBUD DIED!3
-
I just started using noise canceling earbuds and holy cow does it change things.
People talking and traffic blasting down the street in front of our office are my two biggest distractions on any given workday and I haven't heard any of it all day. It's heavenly.
I also have a brown noise machine I sleep next to and I've started dreaming again because I get actual restful sleep again.8 -
People that don't realize their microphone is feeding back everyone's voice into the meeting. Mute your fucking mics people, or better yet buy a fucking pair of headphones or earbuds!4
-
My favorite item on my desk is my "Tiny" Dota2 demihero vinyl. He can hold all kinds of stuff like my pens, glasses, earbuds, and whatevs. Here he is holding my SlothBacca hat!1
-
Mac guy here.
Thinking about buying the funniest, most gigantic headphones just so people realize to leave me the fuck alone.
Not sure if they just don’t see my earbuds or if they just don’t care.6 -
- Me: oh look at those earBuds, they're cool !
- *Me looking at my bank account balance*
- Naah not that good, who needs them anyway ! -
Imagine a multi driver high quality balanced armature earphones. They have stainless steel ear channels and replaceable meshes. They’re also made by apple. Seems impossible in AirPods era?
No. Apple made them. They are really good and extremely comfortable. They are rare nowadays but here in Russia I just bought brand new pair for just $50. They sound awesome.
I listened to JH Layla and everything by Noble Audio. This forgotten apple earbuds still sound awesome.
It’s not a 3am rant. They actually exist. I have them.30 -
Someone on WhatsApp asked me did I like the new update or not ?
Well here is what I replied,
WHAT THE FUCK ?! NOOooo ! already there is Snapchat whose USP is this feature, Snapchat is Snapchat, then they introduced this feature on Instagram that's ok...but WhatsApp should be WhatsApp.
ALL I WANTED IS A SIMPLE PLAIN MESSAGING APP, THAT'S IT !
Now it's wasting my time more, earlier I just used to see Instagram & Snapchat stories in my free time BUT now !? I will see these fucking stories again here on WhatsApp too... BECAUSE I can't help it, it's in our human mind psychology too, we are curious beings, we are somehow bound to open that Status Tab when we will see a green dot ! If it's not true SEE THE NEWS ! NASA just found a whole new Solar System just ~40 light years away ! YES we are curious, we explore, we invent things.
I hope they will roll it back, but NO the ugly truth my friend is people will rant about and forget, and we will end up using it too, hate this seriously ! for instance the new iPhones have no 3.5mm audio jack, WTF ?! well say goodbye to my favourite ear buds ! and buy these FUCKING NEW Monstrously over priced bound-to-buy pair of earbuds if you need high quality audio out.
AND are we bound to be slaves and continue using these features because everyone else is doing so ? NO ! I will use whatever I like the most, I will go back to the roots, may be use those old school IMs and may be ask others to join it.6 -
Sometimes I put my earbuds in and don't even listen to anything just so people will leave me alone and not involve me in idle "chit chat"... and some people just don't give a fuck. 😑
-
My teamleader blabbering about how I shouldn't listen to late shows with my earbuds while I work is rubbing me the wrong way.
"How can you focus while listening to them hurr durr", as if we didn't all do 20 tasks at once on a daily basis anyway.6 -
tl;dr
You know that feeling when you have your headphones on and somebody is talking to you and then your stomach starts to hurt, because you don't want to put down your headphones because the music is great and your headphones plays it really good?
The post
I cannot code without headphones on. I'm currently on a longterm journey to find the best over-the-head budget headphones for coding, just out of curiosity, I started with cheap Phillips headphones for a couple of euros (9 or 10 i don't rem.), I would say they are usable, for a casual user, but far-far from the best
Then i purchased a Sennheiser HD451 for like 3x the price of the Phillips, really good. I use them in work and wanted to go on with the comparison so i bought a ATH m30x for home, and for gods sake, they are soo fucking good, way better what i would expect from a budget headphone, it cost twice the price of the Sennheiser.
Whats your "daily driver"? What would you suggest to try next?
note: before these I was using earbuds which came with my cellphones and 2.1 systems5 -
Going back to coding with earbuds in reminds me why I got noise cancelling over ear headphones in the first place.
-
That moment when you are deep in the zone, focused and solving that damn bug, and the managers began a loud meeting a couple of meters from you, throwing away all the chances to solve the bug, even with earbuds on...
-
I like many Apple products but if there's a thing I hate about that company its their aspirational marketing: they doesn't sell computers, phones, tablets, earbuds and stuff anymore, they want to sell you a "perfect lifestyle" (perfect from the perspective of Californian tech-bros) where you'll be super fit, super organized, devour self help content like no tomorrow while taking pixel perfect notes, do mindfulness and breathing exercises, juggle 5 social events a day... and all it takes to achieve that is buying "just one more device".8

What fresh hell is this ??????
I lost my earbuds TWICE within 2 weeks !!!!
I swear I had em last night when I put em in pouch , and now I see only 1 earbud.
|-_-|-_-| FUCK MY LIFE |-_-|-_-|
Rent me an earbud or kill me, PLEASE
It saddens me to think I'll not fulfill my endorphins quota today :(
The only enjoyment I have in my life is gymming to heavy bass, the endorphins keep me alive, everything else in life is shit right now : unhappy job, stress from GRE prep, no gf, staying away from family1 -
came into my house at 3:00 am (i was fucking my whore ex blonde gf). saw a fucking thief break into my house and steal my shit. when he saw me he ran like the biggest fucking pussy. i was screaming and chasing the fucker. but he jumped over the fence like an asshole and broke his back. but got up and ran away
i couldnt identify him. couldn't see his face cause he was turned around and wearing a black cap. black sports clothes. short fade hair or bald. probably a fucking skinhead robbing people to buy drugs
he stole my dad's phone, his wireless earbuds, mom's medical documents and fucking cups! who the fuck steals cups??? what a fucking retard!
he couldn't steal more cause it seems like i entered the house minutes after he broke in
why some bulLshit always happens to me8 -
Either the coworker next to me doesn't understand social protocol, or my hair's too long for them to notice I've got earbuds in and don't want to be disturbed. Might have to invest in some over-ear cans just to get the message across.1
-
When I’m at home coding, I find myself listening to music with earbuds even though I have a pretty decent speak setup hooked up to my computer. Anyone else do this?3
-
Anyone use wireless earbuds (preferably not with a cord attached to the two)? Looking for an imformed decision. I usually prioritize sound quality over anything.9
-
Anyone have any decent Android apps for showing bluetooth headset's battery level info on status bar? (It can be a non-closeable notif)
FYI, an iPhone can detect this knock-off headphone's battery level. My phone doesn't have a viewing option as a stock widget/app.3 -
I can work productively and for very long hours with a lot of stuff which many dev considers productivity hurdles:
- single small monitor? No problem (in fact in one occasion in which my roommate accidentally broke my laptop charghing port and I couldn't get a spare I worked on an iPad connected trough SSH to a Linux machine completing one of the hardest tasks I ever did without significant loss of productivity)
- old machine? That's ok as long as I can run a minimal Linux and not struggle with Windows
- noise and chatter around me? A 10€ pair of earbuds are enough for me, no noise cancelling needed
- "legacy" stack/programming language? I'd rather spend my days coding in Swift or Rust but in the end I believe which is the dev and its skill which gets the job done not fancy language features so Java 8 will be fine
- no JetBrains or other fancy IDE? Altough some refactoring and code generation stuff is amazing Neovim or VS Code, maybe with the help of some UNIX CLI tools here and there are more than enough
despite this I found out there is a single thing which is like kryptonite for my productivity bringing it from above average* to dangerously low and it's the lack of a quick feedback loop.
For programming tasks that's not a problem because it doesn't matter the language there's always a compiler/interpreter I can use to quickly check what I did and this helps to get quickly in a good work flow but since I went to work with a customer which wants everything deployed on a lazily put together "private cloud" which needs configurations in non-standard and badly documented file formats, has a lot of stuff which instead of being automated gets done trough slowly processed tickets, sometimes things breaks and may take MONTHS to see them fixed... my productivity took a big hit since while I'm still quick at the dev stuff (if I'm able to put together a decent local environment and I don't depend on the cloud of nightmares, something which isn't always warranted) my productivity plummets when I have to integrate what I did or what someone else did in this "cloud" since lacking decent documentation everything has do be done trough a lot of manual tasks and most importantly slow iterations of trial and error. When I have to do that kind stuff (sadly quite often) my brain feels like stuck on "1st gear": I get slow, quickly tired and often I procrastinate a lot even if I force myself out of non work related internet stuff.
*I don't want this to sound braggy but being a passionate developer which breathes computers since childhood and dedicating part of my freetime on continuously improving my skill I have an edge over who do this without much passion or even reluctantly and I say this without wanting to be an èlitist gatekeeper, everyone has to work and tot everybody as the privilege of being passionate in a skill which nowadays has so much market2
