Reinventing the wheel can be very valuable. Even if you don't create a better wheel, you'll learn a lot about how it works, which can really help you out in the long term.15
Configuring my new MacBook Pro
• jre ✓
• jdk ✓
• Android studio ....
• let's see what we get when we type "git" in Terminal.. surprise!!! You have to download Xcode which is 5.30GB. Goodness. Can I cry now? 😭😭😭23
*Downloads Android Studio from the official Android website*
*Opens Android Studio*
Android Studio: "Error: Process command usr/local/android-studio/jre/bin/java finished with non-zero exit value 127
Me: I didn't even do anything yet. I guess I'll change the default Java directory to my native Java JDK
*One hour later*
Android Studio: 50 errors occurred during the Gradle Build.

I'm trying to install a minecraft modpack to play with a friend, and I'm super psyced about it. According to the modpack instructions, the first step is to download the java8 jre. Not sure if I actually need it or not, but it can download while I'm doing everything else, so I dutifully go to the download page and find the appropriate version. The download link does point to the file, but redirects to a login page instead. Apparently I need an oracle account to download anything on their site. stupid.
So I make an account. It requires my life story, or at least full name and address and phone number. stupid. So my name is now "fuck off" and I live in Hell, Michigan. My email is also "gofuckyourself" because I'm feeling spiteful. Also, for some reason every character takes about 3/4ths of a second to type, so it's very slow going. Passwords also cannot contain spaces, which makes me think they're doing some stupid "security" shenanigans like custom reversible encryption with some 5th grade math. or they're just stupid. Whatever, I make the stupid account.
On a whim later, I check for the verification email again. Apparently it just takes bloody forever, but it did show up. Except instead of the first name "Fuck" I entered, I'm now "Andrew", apparently. okay.... whatever. I click the verify button anyway, and to my surprise it actually works, and says that I'm now allowed to use my account. Yay!
So, I go back to the login page (from the download link) and enter my credentials. A new error appears! I cannot use redirects, apparently, and "must type in the page address I want to visit manually." huh? okay, i go to the page directly, and see the same bloody error because of course i do because oracle fucking sucks. So I close the page, go back to the download list, click the link, wait for the login page redirect (which is so totally not allowed, apparently, except it works and manual navigation does not. yay backwards!), and try to log in.
Instead of being presented with an error because of the redirect, it lets me (try to) log in. But despite using prefilled creds (and also copy/pasting), it tells me they're invalid. I open a new tab container, clear the cache (just to be thorough), and repeat the above steps. This time it redirects me to a single signon server page (their concept of oauth), and presents me with a system error telling me to contact "the Administrator." -.- Any second attempts, refreshes, etc. just display the same error.
Further attempts to log in from the download page fail with the same invalid credentials error as before.
Fucking oracle and their reverse Midas touch.13
Every single time when trying to download JRE or JDK from Oracle I forget to tick it. Every single time. Like, just now. :)3
Me at home with my sister.
She(with water jar): Roshan, I can't open up the jar, please help me.
Me(coding): Do not disturb me!! just install Java runtime environment (JRE) and open it again.3
How to block productivity:
I am currently a working student at a huge corporation and tasked to write some smallish java applications. Nothing unusual.
To actually be able to write and compile java programs I need a JDK.
Except that the last corporate update for java removed my jdk and left me with only a jre. It so happened that my admin rights ran out.
To be able to install a new jdk, I need elevated rights, which I need to request. The fucking problem is nobody of my department, who I could talk to, is here or online to accept the request.
Guess who is now sitting in front of his dysfunctional dev environment :/13
so java thinks any jdk different from what the jre is targeting is "out-of-date", you should learn this in "how to not look like an idiot 101" programming class in elementary school. oracle.2
Now I have to register on oracle website with a my company name and work phone before i can download jre or jdk. That's it boys and girls. You're unemployed? No minecraft for you!20
Pet-peeve: fellow devs who think scoffing/dismissing/not-my-probleming before actually understanding the issue is a sign of intelligence; newsflash: you are being lazy, disagreeable and unprofessional.1
Apple app signing and certificates: how do people even circumvent/hack these things? I'm hardly able to do it legit.4
First it was the "set up WampServer so the client can use our database", to which I told her we should use an embedded database, to which she told me to do.
Then the "Just give the client a .jar file and install the JRE in his laptop" to wich I told her we can make a native installer, to which she fucking assigned to me.
Then the whole fucked up management thing with no design whatsoever and the "we don't need version control".
To just a few hours earlier, when she got mad because I set up a Slack for us to exchange information easily, she told me she was already mad because I shared the project by Google Drive and that she worked in security and knows the risk... AND AT THE SAME TIME, she uses Gmail to share the project.. BRILLIANT !7
I told tech support to install java, he installed jre. Maven needs the Jdk.Off to his office again.4
For some reason the backend kept throwing errors when I tried to save a long string containing markdown. Initially I assumed I must be escaping things incorrectly but that all looked fine. Asked the backend guy to take a look.
Turned out that in order to count the number of words they were using a regex, which seems fine, unless you construct the regex out of my string and run that over the word count regex... 🤔
installing visual studio & nuget & git integration
- nuget: WORKS
- templates: WORK
- framework: IS COMPLETE
- support for design patterns: UP TO DATE
-have a ide which is clear to be the ide to develop in microsoft/c# area, kept up to date, etc..
installing eclipse & maven
- try to find out which version suits you best in that open source jungle, install it
- install jdk
- play around with the eclipse settings to point it to jdk instead of jre
- google a settings.xml for maven
- fail do create a maven build, so the .mv directory is here, so you can
- place the settings there
- manually import some certs
- try if maven dependencies work
- google how to define running goals
- now define your running goals
- BUT as a reward, the git plugin just works without having to troubleshoot tomorrow too
- hope they wont update soon4
Looking at some new dev tools I spotted this gem:
"If install fails, keep trying to install a few times."
Thanks for the tip!1
That moment when: you lift your gaze from your phone to understand the sudden quiet is because your expert opinion is needed in the meeting.
Java 11 is amazing they said, Jigsaw will make things much easier they said, JavaFX is now just a simple Maven dependency they said...

Python haters, gather 'round
oh come on... In java it's all simple as 123. You build an app, you have like 200 dependencies, you pack it all in a single fat jar and only deploy that single .jar. Don't need no internet, no installs, no pip, no nothing: just your .jar file and the JVM.
- build an app
- use 200+ deps
- build your whole project into a single fat jar
- deploy your jar in the env
- install [*khem khem* scp into the server] jre
Now let's look at py, shall we?
- build an app
- use 1 dep
- deploy all the 20 .py files in the env
- make sure you have internet access
- install python
- install pip
- pip install <my dependency>
- run your app18
To you who enjoyed the Gif/Jiff, Sequel/EsQueEll, Git/Jeet grandiose debates, comes the new phonetic conundrum: DevREnt vs. DevRUnt. Soon, in monitors near you.6
Spending the day sending emails back and forth with your client because they can't be bothered to prepare a single overview of what properties the endpoint expects, and instead expect you to piece it together from 6 PDFs of which at least 2 contain contradicting information, another is outdated, and the last one seems to have been exported from word and is missing half the content.
Steps to make a portable version of Minecraft Java Edition (for Windows):
1. Get a flash drive, preferably of a decent size (>500MB). I used a 128GB flash USB 3.
2. Download Java JRE (version 8).
3. Download MultiMC
4. Install Java, put destination on flash drive. example: x:/mc/java
5. Eject flash drive.
6. Uninstall JRE from computer. This will remove the installation entry in the computer. Since flash drive is ejected it cannot delete off drive.
7. Install multimc. example: x:/mc/multimc
8. Point multimc to JRE location on flash drive.
9. Edit the path of the JRE to be something like this: ../java/etc... This keeps it from trying to use the drive letter and use a relative path instead. I edited the multimc config file to do this. Can probably be done in program too. If you modify config file you will have to quit multimc.
10. Login with your minecraft account in multimc.
11. Download some version of minecraft or modpack.
12. Enjoy on any windows computer and take with you!8
My life was troublesome today, had to help a non programmer to run jar files.
The jar executed well from command line in Windows 10 but didn't work on double click.
Did all the tricks, registry edits, cmd commands and at last I found a miracle tool called Jarfix.
Just double click and all okay.
The root cause of the problem was 7zip.
This bug is reported in the Oracle bug reporting and they have closed it as " Will not fix" low-priority report.2
We came across a bug that only manifested itself in Edge if, and only if, the developer console was closed. Which we only discovered once it went live since during testing we always had the console open to monitor things... D:2
Funnily enough my initial experience with Java at uni dampened my enthusiasm for programming I had harboured as a kid. Discontinued the course and studied something else. Cue three years later; took an elective programming in C and some other coding subjects and fell in love with coding. Ended up writing code for my bachelor thesis, lots of free time coding, teaching the elective I had taken only a year before, and now it's my job and I love it. :)

Wait what? So I checked the docs and this is actually how it is supposed to work... >_<1
What is DevRant's business model? It's a really great community, and I'm interested about how it's monetized (or plans for the future)4
I fucking hate environnement configuration so much that I prefer to debug 8 hours straight rather than lose my time and shit for 2 hours on idiotic configuration problems and jump from page to page like a dumbass
"Hey you want that module, download it here !"
"Oopsie, starting from X version of the JDK/JRE this is no longer standalone and directly embedded in"
"Can't find it ? Well I just forgot to tell you that starting from Y version this is COMPLETELY removed from what I just told you to search in and now in another standalone package"
"So now you added your package as dependency for you project, your IDE detects everything well but can't run your code ? That's because it doesn't work anyway, use another method found on the dedicated Github issue which makes little sense and that you have to apply everytime, then sacrifice your inexistent newborn to connect to the 9th circle of hell where Java resides so everything will work"
I knew I couldn't get away using fucking Java and JavaFX3
That moment when: you realize your team has introduced a fatal flaw and lacks the foresight to understand it. The countdown has begun.2
yes, i know this isn't omg! ubuntu
yes i know it's obviously not StOve (you guys are way too nice)
but im going to look like an idiot for asking this here. my process is a rollercoaster to read so bear with me
· xubuntu 17.10
· zsh (not that it matters)
° i want to be able to use java -jar file.jar
i tried using that command
zsh: java: permission denied
then used sudo
sudo: java: command not found
i grabbed the generic x64 tar.gz and extracted to ~/.local/.app/java/
set the Java path to the openjdk folder inside, no good
i installed openjdk-8-jre
couldnt figure it out that way, so uninstalled
RE-GRABBED the x64 tarball
extracted into /usr/java
set the path to the folder containing java & javaws executables
still no luck
what is the problem here18
When your peers lack the technical depth to promote their ideas, you bet they're honing their social skills in those confidential 1-on-1s.
Screw Scrum, screw it very much. Is it a task or a story? Oh let's make it a story to track points. What are points, really? *20 minute grilling always follows* Well they're kind of a roundabout way of talking about time without talking about time, mkay? But last time 2 points took you a day, what gives now? What do you mean points are for internal use, but how will management plan ahead for next quarter? Ok, let's mix in all those new people, and propotionately bump the expectation for the sprint, mkay? Yeah, they did 34 points per sprint over there, we'll just add those in. Oh, and by the way, after the 4-day estimation session we had where everyone was seizuring, I scheduled us at 645 points for the coming quarter, mkay? Don't worry, I added 15% for the "unexpected dtuff" so you're safe. Fuck you scrum, scrum-fall, whatever you are. Lost a dev lead role once for being honest about it after a year with a team that loved me, and projects completed more or less on time. Been reconsidered for a dev lead role for being honest about it in another place. Somebody else peddle this kool-aid, this one prefers a walk-on role in the wall to a lead role in the cage.5
Spent entire fucking day trying to get gradle to download library from internal artifactory because java didnt recognize the ca root cert i placed in java jre cacerts file. Goddamnit
I always thought J2EE was like a completely different thing from general Java. It has features like Enterprise management beans, special packages and has it's on Project type, structure in IDEs.
But it seems like it's not actually that different? If you use Spring, Hibernate, custom library annotations and build a Servlet, web server with @POST, @GET or use Serialization... And maybe use JDK instead of JRE, Maven, Ant... apparently that's considered J2EE?9
Web-project on Eclipse EE:
Project1 : all goes in the right way.
Project2 : JRE System Library doesn't exist.
Dear eclipse/jdk/jre (whoever you are) what's wrong with you?
P.s. i only added a file in both projects.1
Okay, my first IDE was Eclipse. When I began learning programming for the first time, I used Atom at first, but then my uncle showed me Eclipse. I fell in love with it.
Now fast forward to now, and JRE 9 is out. I am just a student, and I don't think that Java 9 should matter much too me, but it is always good to have the latest version.
So I installed Java 9 SE tools and decided to set them as default in Eclipse. Five seconds later, I found it to be quite slow and unusable, so I switched back to 1.8. I don't think that his affects me much, but should I switch IDEs? People keep bragging about the IntelliJ, so it might be worth a try. The free version of it looks sketchy, because it has almost no checkmarks under it. Is it worth the switch? Do I still get everything that I get in Eclipse in IJ?1
When work says here you know java fix this Javanese application, you have to use this editor with these tools we will give you java 7 your tools need java 8 but that's okay we will install that later not give you admin on your box and not set your path to use the java 8 Jew included with the JDk and wouldn't give the standard Jre because I don't have a business case even though I just need java 8 to jun the tools. Oh well I guess I get paid for trying to figure out how to get it to run without permissions and with a virtualized development application1
Just little Tip for All (Java Developers) when ever you want to activate the Java Plugin for Firefox:
The Plugin seams to not be intigrated in the jdk!
I had to install the Common Jre to the plugin in Firefox
How can i fix this?
tried installing new jre
and currently running jdk-13.0.1
