Happened during an exam!
Had a viva session after the exam
Examiner: how much do you know about Linux
Me: (pulls out phone and shows him the kernel I have been working on)
Examiner (to other teacher): give him full marks already11 -
Once my teacher was taking my viva and she asked me to explain the below line.
Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in)
I told her that this creates a newScanner instance which points to the input stream passed as argument
She shouted at me and said that I am wrong.
She explained to me that this line creates a new object not an instance10 -
PHP doesn’t scale. Riiiiiight. Wikipedia runs entirely on PHP and is the fifth most visited site on the internet. There’s also this little site called Facebook that uses PHP, ever heard of it?
PHP is slow. Sure, old PHP can be slow. The argument is about as sound is saying that OS X is a terrible OS because my first Apple IIe was slow. PHP 7 is plenty fast, even three time faster than Python.

Don't cha just love it when you download your "native" desktop application to host a meeting, only to find out its actually a wrapper around a browser?
How did I find out? Well I innocently tried to drag and drop an image to share, only to have the browser open and render that file instead of uploading it, killing the application it was running behind it, closing the meeting for everyone on it ... and not even be able to access a back button to re-open the session.

University Final Viva for OOP with C++
(Yeah, that first line is a rant in itself for the likes of me and Mr. Torvalds)
Assistant Professor:
Tell me a few "functions" in C++ STL algorithm header
Me:
*starts off with the first one that came to my mind*
sort()
AP: Huh? a I'm asking the Algorithms in C++ STL
Me: Yes, this is one of them Ma'am.
She looked at me as if I told her that I'm dating her daughter. It became clear she doesn't know about it and she'll gladly deduct my marks for getting it wrong. So I explained how Sort() is a hybrid of quicksort, heap sort and insertion sort. (Read about it an hour ago while doing a competitive programming question)
AP: Tell me the ones we did in class.
I haven't attended those classes, so I just told her the ones I knew.
After a couple more infuriating questions, which themselves sounded right from a book published in the 90's, she gave me 10/15.
This is what's wrong with India's Education system, even the teachers know only the stuff mentioned in the course hand-outs. Forget brownie points, you get screwed over by the teachers for actually knowing stuff and using it.8 -
In school we had to create a project using Java and SQL we created a library management software.
In India a teacher from other school comes to check your projects and allot marks. (They just take a viva and give a marks)
Out of the whole class he asked me to present my project (they usually don't look at it ) and he checked each and every file asked a lot of questions.
Viva went on for 45 mins (usually 10-15 mins) and when the whole class is looking at you like what did they make.
Yeah that made me feel like a badass dev.1 -
Time taken to modify the code : 10 minutes
Time taken searching the code to understand where to put the modification : 1/2 day
Viva VB6!2 -
I'mma be waay to real with you all here, I'm sad, lonely, and scared that I don't take as many oppertunities to "viva la vida" as I should, and that ultimately I will live an unfufilling life and or die alone.26

Ok dev's, im proposing a small movement for windows 10 mobile, if you have used windows 10 mobile personally, you will know it is actually a fantastic operating system that is super snappy and easy to develop for (No i'm not a microsoft fan boy, far from actually).
The only downfall of the OS is the app support, so im proposing devs come together and create quality apps and games for win 10 mobile.
Hopefully this can sort of persuade others into a revolution of sorts (And hopefully change microsofts mind of abandoning it), I personally will support windows 10 mobile for every game I create, within reason.14 -
I have been working 100 hours per week for the last 4 years. I had to deal with many stress issues, eyes, pain and headaches.
But nothing has scared me like my college life. For some reason, I still get nightmares about the viva exams.
What's wrong with me?3 -
My project manager decided to go full micromanager today. So members of the team have been emailing our manager and the PMs manager to explain why what he's doing is bad both for our deliverables and our moral1

External: Where are clients IP addresses in server file
Me: Sir client goes to the server....
External: u know nthg...

For my viva today my teacher asked " do you know white box testing, black box testing, stress testing"
Me: sir, I know stress testing the best and I know little about the others.
Teacher: Explain white box testing.

Viva Insights is the worst malware from Microsoft so far. Spent a good two hours finding out how to get rid of events called "Tid för fokusering" (time for focus) that kept popping up in the Outlook Calendar, just to find out that you don't configure that shit in Outlook anymore, but in Teams. Go figure.3

I am sure this guy screws everybody up in viva or in interviews.
I mean, if you don't see the f'ing "evidencie" whether this app is "usefull" or not, why would you try the app in the first place.
Also if the app did not work for you, why won't you post the actual issue.
Any suggestions on what should I reply?2 -
There is no Go devDuck, and it makes me sad :(
I want my Go devDuck!
Stop the oppression of Go!

Back in college, during the Final year project vivas, I really tried to explain what we had built in the first viva and spoke some gibberish shit in the other three vivas.
Other three vivas were good.

I really hate how stuff can disappear off the Internet, especially if it's behind a paywall. People aren't encouraged to download and archive stuff. I just wrote this script to archive things off of Locals:
https://gitlab.com/djsumdog/...
I really rushed to get it done because my subscriptions are expiring, and I really no longer want to support these people:

Fun story, I keep discovering new ways of being shameless.
I had been once caught of basically giving my assignment (not one of my brightest moments)for a course to a friend and surprise surprise the instructor did take disciplinary action but he was a bit pissed so infact, he called out for a viva for all the assignments.
The Vivas went fine but immediately after I was done I was like "sir so I'm having a bit of trouble in this next assignment I was wondering if you could help me out" 😂 I have no clue what I was thinking nor was I proud of that.
Kudos to the instructor tho who calmly responded and actually helped me out with it.
Also due to some policy the action could not go ahead so yea guess things turned out fine. Im now hoping to see if he can keep me as an RA. Again, yes why am I like this. Good instructor tho. -
I feel like I may be done with dev... the imposter syndrome has been hitting hard lately. I really want to get into Natural Language Processing, I'm currently looking at skip-gram parsing a dictionary using Word2Vec, then I came across a paper called dic2vec which looks promising.. half the time, I just think I'm barking up the wrong tree, or that it's been done before. Most times I conclude that I have nothing new to offer and there's gotta be half a thousand people like me, striving in the same space. Possibly failing. Don't get me wrong, the state of consumer software at the moment NECESSITATES my involvement (I'm looking at you (epic games, windows) , every which way I look at it. I just don't know where or how to get going. Viva la revolution. A toast, to shitty software and exceptionally low moral *klink*6

I know it doesn't really apply because we have widescreen monitors now, but regardless, I hate seeing code that runs the width of the screen, I'd much rather have more lines than more columns. Viva la vertical!5

so i had this day at college we were supposed have a viva ( oral test ) ..the teacher asked me to print hello world..in java but no where can i use a static method including 'main'..well i made a static block instead and added System.exit in it.. and i had to write the complete syntax of main else it wont run..but my teacher snapped back at me saying it could be done.. with a non static main
..nodded an okay..didnt want a fight..came home..figured out the thing she said is now obsolete.. fuckin hell..update yourself at least..1 -
our office software has the shittiest documentation. no problem! i love to browse all the subfolders to find where to place a serial letter template! why would someone want to do this in the first place?
if someone working in the german medical field: i can not recommend eva/viva for some other reasons as well. -
Feature not a bug...
My work laptop has started rebooting almost every night.
It's not clear why, but I sort of think of it as a feature now.
I have an ultra-wide monitor, plus another wide next to that one, and a bunch of virtual desktops.
I often think "ok everything is where it is that's good" but coming in reality with a bazillion things open across all the desktops and screens sometimes when I come back the next day ... it's actually just a lot of mess / overhead to pick up where I was.
Sometimes I think we introduce a lot of complexity to solve a problem and ... actually it's just more complexity if you're not already 8 layers deep.5
