Yesterday we went to a customer to talk to the accountants because we want to remove one of their unused PC's in the office.

First, just the way they think (and talk if) they are the most important and it's absolutely critical everything works 100%. I see they are important but not 100 times more important than everybody else!

They called us their EDP-guys (EDV in German, that's the translation I found). That insulted me a bit. I'm rather called IT-guy, I don't know anything about the fucking EDP systems nor want I to. I'm there to make sure the hardware works. But whatever, fine, call me what you want.

Then they straight up threatened us, because their work is so important, they can't afford to have downtime in their systems. They don't really care, but the bosses of us both do and if we fuck up they (the bosses) will hold us responsible. There is a fucking update for your piece of shit software (datev)! I don't do the update, I'm just responsible that the update can be deployed on the hardware. I'm not responsible if this update fucks your system and frankly I don't care!

I could tell them all of this but they won't listen. They always talk in this patronising arrogant voice, because they are so important and we better don't fuck up the update.

I'm there to help. I don't want downtime for your systems. I want you to work with our systems the best you can.
But fuck you, I hope the server burns down!

When I wrote a templating engine (great overstatement) just for myself to learn, I had this bug in php5 and regex that would crash the whole apache server.
Literally nothing worked and I didn't know why. After rebuilding everything I tried with regex using only simple string manipulation all of a sudden everything worked fine.

I finally found it!

I set up an self-hosted gitlab at our company and for some reason everything worked except for one thing: using git (clone, push, etc) via SSH.
The solution was on the 'common installation problems' page at gitlab, but it took me a long time finding it through Google.
I read through the auth.log and realized the 'git' user was locked. Swapped the '!' for a '*' in the /etc/shadow and now it works.

Had a Windows update the other day. Now hyperv isn't working anymore.

I fixed it but why the fuck does the update change the group policy settings? It's supposed to update the system not poke around in my settings!

I came home about 1am and saw a bug in a small (unpaid...) project that had to do with timezones (see some earlier rants). Fixed it, got to bed.
A few days later I realized that a feature I implemented before was gone. Going through the git log I found out it was me in that night who removed it, by accident I suppose.
Not the end of the world but I was quite intrigued by my own drunk ability to remove a feature that had nothing to to with what I was doing and not even noticing it.

Fuck Amazon! Or apple? Or both? I don’t know...

I just wanted to read a book on my iPad using the kindle app. I can read a free excerpt from the book but when I decided that I wanted to buy the book, I couldn’t. Not from within the kindle app nor the amazon app.

I read on the internet that it has something to do with the greediness of apple and that they want an astronomical cut from the sales. So amazon decided that they wouldn’t sell ebooks in the iOS-Apps.

I had to get my android phone and buy the book using the app I’ve installed there. I could’ve also opened the amazon webpage in my browser.

Fucking retards, I just want to read! And the worst thing is, I don’t even really know whom to blame!

Anyways, now I can read the book (zum Leben ist es schön aber ich würde da ungern auf Besuch hinfahren by Tilman birr if anybody is interested)

I installed gitlab at our company. I ranted about not using any version control whatsoever in the past but now it happened!

My boss wanted to see a project I was working on for himself so I copied the project to a usb drive and gave it to him. I used git for the project locally and I told him to use this too if he changes anything. And that it would be a great idea to have this centralised on our server. He agreed and I told him he just had to give me the order to implement it. He was like "go ahead" and one hour later we had a gitlab up and running.
We will have some internal training to do and then we are in the 21st century!

I am currently sorting through my harddrive(s) and realized I have over 800 gigabytes of raw audio and video from four of our theatre productions lying around. The films have long been edited and there is no use for the source material anymore.
But just in case, I'm keeping it. You never know...
