So Nvidia doesn't let you use their GeForce Experience app anymore without logging in.

Fuck that, I don't want to login so I can see an FPS counter in my ganes or record them to my local disk or something like that... Fuck you Nvidia and fuck whoever decided that would be a good idea.6 -
Just cloned a 90 GB Virtual Box, 15 minutes later when the clone was 90% done, I got an error message saying that I don't have enough disk space (I had only 80 GB). WHY DO I HAVE TO WAIT 15 MINUTES TO GET THAT INFORMATION????4

Deleted code is easy to maintain, easy to read and it makes applications run faster.
Moreover applications take less disk space and are faster to download.

Remember to regularly defragment your drives on linux. use this handy command.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=1M
Terminology:
dd: Disk defragment
if: input file (the pattern to search for, and should always be /dev/zero)
of: output file (your disk, /dev/sda for instance)
bs: blocsize 1M is fine here16 -
Some time 199x, when I was still a little kiddo, my dad bought a PC. It had a big ass HDD (dimensions-wise), 1x 3.5" floppy disk drive and a 5.25" floppy disk drive. It ran DOS. Dad managed to hook up a dot matrix Epson printer to it and used the computer for writing... whatever, really :)
Then dad got some of those 5" floppies with games and installed them on our PC. Mach3, Indy, Entity and Atlantis were my favourite ones. Later we got Wolfenstein 3-D, but that was just too scary, too intense for me.
All that was years before we got Windows 3.0 installed there. -
When I was getting my CS degree, in the first year (2003-2004) all projects had to be delivered in an envelop containing the printed document and a floppy disk with the code/program inside. Yes, a floppy disk.
So whenever I couldn't finish the project on time, I just dropped a corrupted floppy disk on the envelop, this way I got at least one more week to work on the project and when professor came to me like "Hey, your floppy didn't work" I was like "no way! oh man, I think I have a copy here, try this one instead".
Oh those good old times that will never come back.4 -

Gather around folks, I'll paint you a nice picture based on a true story, back from my sysadmin days. Listen up.
It's about HP and their Solaris 5.4/6 support.
- Yet another Prod Solaris dinosaur crashed
- Connected to console, found a dead system disk; for some reason it was not booting on the remaining redundant disk...
- Logged an HP vendor case. Sev1. SLA for response is 30 minutes, SLA for a fix is <24 hours
- It took them 2 days to respond to our Prod server outage due to failed system disks (responses "we are looking into this" do not count)
- it took another day for them to find an engineer who could attend the server in the DC
- The field engineer came to the DC 4 hours before the agreed time, so he had to wait (DC was 4-5 hours of driving away from HP centre)
- Turns out, he came to the wrong datacentre and was not let in even when the time came
- We had to reschedule for two days later. Prod is still down
- The engg came to the DC on time. He confirmed he had the FRU on him. Looks promising
- He entered the Hall
- He replaced the disk on the Solaris server
- It was the wrong disk he replaced. So now the server is beyond rebuild. It has to be built anew... but only after he comes back and replaces the actually faulty disk.
- He replaced that disk on the wrong Solaris server2 -
*tries to shrink an NTFS volume in preparation for a new BTRFS volume*
(shameless ad: check out https://github.com/maharmstone/...! BTRFS on Windows, how cool is that?)
Windows Disk Management: ah surely, I can do that for you.
*clicks "shrink"*
…
Well that disk calculation process is taking a long time...
*checks Task Manager*
*notices a pretty disk-intensive defrag process*
… Yeah.. defragging. Seems reasonable. Guess I'll just let it finish its defragmentation process. After that it should just be able to shrink the NTFS filesystem and modify the partition table without any issues. After all, I've done this manually in Linux before, and after defragging (to relocate the files on the leftmost sectors of the disk) it finished in no time.
*defrag finishes*
Alright, time to shrink!
….
Taking a shitton of time...
*checks Task Manager again*
System taking a lot of disk this time.. not even a defrag? How long can this shit take at 40MB/s simultaneous read and write?
…
*many minutes passed, finished that episode of Elfen Lied, still ongoing...*
Fucking piece of Microshit. Are you really copying over the entire 1.3TB that that disk is storing?! Inefficient piece of crap.. living up to the premise of Shitware indeed!!!15 -

What features would you want in a logger?
Here's what I'm planning so far:
- Tagged entries for easy scanning of log file
- Support for indenting to group similar sequential entries
- Multiple entry types (normal, info, event, warning, error, fatal, debug, verbose)
- Meta entries, so the logger logging about itself, e.g. disk i/o failures.
- Ability to add custom entry types, including tag, log-level, etc.
- Customizable timestamp function
- Support for JS's async nature -- this equates to passing a unique key per 'thread'; the logger will re-write all the parent blocks for context, if necessary. if that sounds confusing, it's okay; just trust that it makes sense.
- Caching, retries, etc. in the event of disk i/o issues.
- Support for custom writers, allowing you to e.g. write logs to an API rather than console or disk.
How about these features?
- Multiple (named) logs with separate writers (console, disk, etc.)
- Ability to individually enable/disable writing of specific entry types. (want verbose but not info? sure thing, weirdo!)
- Multiple writers per log. Combined with the above, this would allow you to write specific entry types (e.g. error, warning, fatal) to stderr instead of stdout, or to different apis.
- Ability to write the same log entry to multiple logs simultaneously
What do you think of these features?
What other features would you want?
I'm open to suggestions!18 -
I know this is just an ad, but who the fuck attaches a hard drive disk directly to a FUCKING oscilloscope?6

Day #01 of my brother's switch to Linux:
So far so good, he's really happy with the Linux (surprisingly). The Witcher 3, Payday 2, Minecraft run flawlessly, although I had to make some small configurations in disk mounting, because of the fact that the games disk is still in NTFS file system4 -

We might achieve world peace one day and still won't have agreed over indentation.
Indentation = TAB. Just 1 character (N spaces = N characters = more disk space, duh!). And then each dev can chose their own TAB width (in spaces) in their IDE of choice. Beautiful.11 -
My Sunday Morning until afternoon. FML. So I was experiencing nightly reboots of my home server for three days now. Always at 3:12am strange thing. Sunday morning (10am ca) I thought I'd investigate because the reboots affected my backups as well. All the logs and the security mails said was that some processes received signal 11. Strange. Checked the periodics tasks and executed every task manually. Nothing special. Strange. Checked smart status for all disks. Two disks where having CRC errors. Not many but a couple. Oh well. Changing sata cables again 🙄. But those CRC errors cannot be the reason for the reboots at precisely the same time each night. I noticed that all my zpools got scrubbed except my root-pool which hasn't been scrubbed since the error first occured. Well, let's do it by hand: zpool scrub zroot....Freeze. dafuq. Walked over to the server and resetted. Waited 10 minutes. System not up yet. Fuuu...that was when I first guessed that Sunday won't be that sunny after all. Connected monitor. Reset. Black screen?!?! Disconnected all disks aso. Reset. Black screen. Oh c'moooon! CMOS reset. Black screen. Sigh. CMOS reset with a 5 minute battery removal. And new sata cable just in cable. Yes, boots again. Mood lightened... Now the system segfaults when importing zroot. Good damnit. Pulled out the FreeBSD bootstick. zpool import -R /tmp zroot...segfault. reboot. Read-only zroot import. Manually triggering checksum test with the zdb command. "Invalid blckptr type". Deep breath now. Destroyed pool, recreated it. Zfs send/recv from backup. Some more config. Reboot. Boots yeah ... Doesn't find files??? Reboot. Other error? Undefined symbols???? Now I need another coffee. Maybe I did something wrong during recovery? Not very likely but let's do it again...recover-recover. different but same horrible errors. What in the name...? Pulled out a really old disk. Put it in, boots fine. So it must be the disks. Walked around the house and searched for some new disks for a new 2 disk zfs root mirror to replace the obviously broken disks. Found some new ones even. Recovery boot, minimal FreeBSD Install for bootloader aso. Deleted and recreated zroot, zfs send/recv from backup. Set bootfs attribute, reboot........
It works again. Fuckit, now it is 6pm, I still haven't showered. Put both disks through extensive tests and checked every single block. These disks aren't faulty. But for some reason they froze my system in a way so that I had to reset my BIOS and they had really low level data errors....? I Wonder if those disks have a firmware problem? So that was most of my Sunday. Nice, isn't it? But hey: calm sea won't make a good sailor, right?3 -
It feels SO good to have nothing to lose on your system! Code on GitHub, pictures on an external disk, documents on Google Drive and OneDrive and bookmarks etc. on my Google Account. If my PC were to crash completely then I wouldn't be as lost as I'd normally be :D3

Recent experience (#2)
- a cousin wanted to reinstall Windows on his laptop
- gave it to a tech shop
- they couldn't, said hard disk faulty
- I took the laptop hoping that it's just a partition table issue
- I tried changing partition table from MBR to GPT, but failed
- removed his hard disk from his laptop and plugged into mine
- tried and failed
- so I thought I would give it a chance with Ubuntu
- tried and ... 👍
- reinstalled his hard disk in his laptop
- works like a charm
- want to see what complaints he comes up with
- he is not a tech guy
- let's see how he manages to use it for his daily tasks20 -

3 weeks ago I started building this CI pipeline. Finally, I see something GREEN!! YAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!

Story from when game disks were in fashion
I asked my best buddy to burn a disk of GTA vice city so that I can install it on my desktop.
The next day when I receive the disk and insert it into my PC I almost fell of my chair laughing cause that douche bag had copied the icon from his desktop to the disk and burned it .
I almost fell laughing not because what he did , but because he did so when he was in his final year of his IT degree 🤣🤣🤣3 -
"Hello, the drive of your XYZ server is getting full, would it be possible to prune some of the unused and/or old docker images and layers there please? Alternatively, we can offer to replace the drives with a higher capacity models for FOO extra per month"
"Hello, the disk use keeps growing and has reached the 95% mark, please prune some of your images to make space for new. If you wanted to choose the alternate option of disk capacity increase, we would have to do that as soon as possible, otherwise you may run out of space before the RAID array rebuilds"
"Hello, your server XYZ has completely ran out of disk space. Any changes that would require data being saved on disk may and probably will fail. Please free some space as soon as possible"
Ugh, I hate clients that just don't cooperate until shit hits the fan...
And no, we could not prune the space ourselves, its not our data to delete whenever we think it necessary.
We merely manage the machine's operation, keeping it online and its services running.2 -

we are learning how a disk rotates in order to preserve memory on the physical computer hardware. in order for this disk to preserve memory, it has to rotate by following laws of physics as a circular sphere with sine and cosine waves on the coordinate system. these sine and cosine waves that vibrate independently and periodically, which means that the disk rotates 10,000 orbits per second. a drill rotates 2000 orbits per second. 10,000 orbits per second is fast enough to cut your hand off in less than 1 millisecond. we are learning that this disk has to rotate so fast in order to preserve the memory which was stored by the database system with sql.
on a subject called sql databases.13 -

Later went to play some BfA on the gaming rig and... No boot disk recognized. Ahn?
My SSD is plugged in. SATA cable is well seated. Thing was working not 30min before...
After a loooong time trying to figure out if it was hardware or micro$hit's Windows 10, I finally figured it:
It seems Windows installed its EFI partition on the old HDD. So my SSD is basically a single, large NTFS volume. Now I need to download the Win10 ISO, boot up the install disk and use the cmd prompt to create a new EFI partition on my SSD. Ugh.
Fucking Windows didn't think to install its boot manager on its own disk. "Nah, just gonna use this random magnetic disk here". Why? My login queues are already huge on WoW, why must this wankstain of an OS annoy me even more?3 -

This is from a DOS-era Packard-Bell recovery disk. No one out of the group of like 30 16-yr-olds could crack the password in the installer. I literally just opened it in nano.

A friend of my mom asks me transfer some files from her hard disk to her pendrive because I am supposedly *good with computers*.
As an obedient son, I go to her house to do the needful.
I switch on the laptop and plug both right in. At this point, I am wondering if this really my life is for.
Lost in my thoughts, I accidentally format her hard disk. Now I freak out. Seeing no possible way out, I remove both and say her work is done.
I quickly leave the house and never look back. To this day, I have never gone back to her house.2 -

"Your disk is almost full..." Hmmm... I can't deal with this right now - so I search for npm_modules and just delete all of those folders... 5 minutes later - trash is empty... and the disk is not almost full.1

Motherfucking cocksucking Microsoft windows. The worst software ever written by shittiest developers.
Mother fucker blowed up all the partitions ( Linux installation, root and /home partition ), including windows recovery disk.
I wish, your HQ will blow up the same way, someday.

DOS is not “Disk Operating System”. DOS, aka QDOS, is “Quick and Dirty Operating System”. This is real. Google it.
Similarly, Windows CE is not “Compact Embedded”. It's “Chaotic Evil”.2 -
Not only dev related but remember to constantly backup your important info of your Hard disk constantly... specially if those disk have not only the lastest code you are have been working on but photos of you and high school friends back in the day when the original Iphone was just released that you havent properly printed yet.
I think that is one of the nearest thing I can think of that I regret lately aside from simple being "my life" in itself1 -

At 5:35 Gilfoyle says: "In order to hold that much data we would have to go RAID 0. [...] If we lose even one platter, we lose Melcher's data. Permanently."
But my question is: Why use RAID at all? Just storing the data without RAID would reduce the complexity, and if one disk fails, only the data on that one disk is lost. Also, I doubt speed is a priority at that point, since the whole thing is running on a home broadband connection, which something like a WD Gold data-center-harddrive (200+ MB/s) can easily max out.
Also, wouldn't it be easier to pay the broadband bill out of their own pocket, instead of moving tons of server equipment to Stanford?4 -

What's up with all of these unstable updates at the same time from Google and Microsoft?
First Microsoft releases an update that deletes My Documents
Then chrome on windows gets updated with a "eat your disk in addition to ram usage" that freezes my PC.

At one point, my laptop's hard drive went down. Turns out, windows had written some garbage data to the mft, and fucked up the file structure. Luckily i was able to restore a big chunk of the data using recuva. I cleaned the disk after saving the most important files, cleaned the disk, reinstalled windows. All good so far. I put the laptop's drive and my recovery disk into my desktop to put back the files. During the install in forced me to make an account, which I wanted to delete. So I ran "rmdir /users /s" and went to grab a cup of coffee. Turns out, cmd was pointed at my recovery disk instead of my laptop disk. My whole backup wiped.1

A few days after the vacation, daddy (me) finally finished copying all the photos from the digital camera to the big external hard drive. Left it lying in the living room, in the corner where all the tech stuff frequently lies. In come my boys, and I'm not sure why, they start plugging power supplies around. Unfortunately the one from the laptop fit into the hole on the external disk, but had a different (higher) voltage. Result: 1 fried hard drive, containing all the baby photos and videos of said boys up that time.
I still believe that it's only the circuit board that is fried, and the data is still all there. I still have the hope to find a used disk, replace the board and all will be back.5 -

TLDR filling disk space
Filling almost all c drive and buying more and more external storage.
When downloading new software, open file explorer -> my computer -> press f5 every 10 seconds to see your drive taking place. -
It's 2022 and Firefox still doesn't allow deactivating video caching to disk.
When playing videos from some sites like the Internet Archive, it writes several hundreds of megabytes to the disk, which causes wear on flash storage in the long term. This is the same reason cited for the use of jsonlz4 instead of plain JSON. The caching of videos to disk even happens when deactivating the normal browsing cache (about:config property "browser.cache.disk.enable").
I get the benefit of media caching, but I'd prefer Firefox not to write gigabytes to my SSD each time I watch a somewhat long video. There is actually the about:config property "browser.privatebrowsing.forceMediaMemoryCache", but as the name implies, it is only for private browsing. The RAM is much more suitable for this purpose, and modern computers have, unlike computers from a decade ago, RAM in abundance, which is intended precisely for such a purpose.
The caching of video (and audio) to disk is completely unnecessary as of 2022. It was useful over a decade ago, back when an average computer had 4 GB of RAM and a spinning hard disk (HDD). Now, computers commonly have 16 GB RAM and a solid-state drive (SSD), which makes media caching on disk obsolete, and even detrimental due to weardown. HDDs do not wear down much from writing, since it just alters magnetic fields. HDDs just wear down from the spinning and random access, whereas SSDs do wear down from writing. Since media caching mostly invovles sequential access, HDDs don't mind being used for that. But it is detrimental to the life span of flash memory, and especially hurts live USB drives (USB drives with an operating system) due to their smaller size.
If I watch a one-hour HD video, I do not wish 5 GB to be written to my SSD for nothing. The nonstandard LZ4 format "mozLZ4" for storing sessions was also introduced with the argument of reducing disk writes to flash memory, but video caching causes multiple times as much writing as that.
The property "media.cache_size" in about:config does not help much. Setting it to zero or a low value causes stuttering playback. Setting it to any higher value does not reduce writes to disk, since it apparently just rotates caching within that space, and a lower value means that it just rotates writing more often in a smaller space. Setting a lower value should not cause more wear due to wear levelling, but also does not reduce wear compared to a higher value, since still roughly the same amount of data is written to disk.
Media caching also applies to audio, but that is far less in size than video. Still, deactivating it without having to use private browsing should not be denied to the user.
The fact that this can not be deactivated is a shame for Firefox.2 -

I will never rant enough about Windows. It is so aged. I have 6TB of storage, 2 SSD of 1To and 1 HDD of 6TB
But windows doesn’t care, it will pack everything in the same disk in this damned AppData no matter where you install your softwares, making main disk full.
Wanted to build a rather big docker image, but yeah, because I guess that the guys from Docker have other things to do than caring of a 90s OS with a fancy UI, they use an emulated ext4 file system, it filled my disk, Docker is crashing because of that, letting me no other choice than removing the emulated disk.10 -
One of our servers had a disk fail this week. Luckily it's 1 of 3 in a RAID5 array. And, luckily, it was our mostly-dev box and didn't have any production stuff on it, except for some support things. We scheduled a disk replacement with the hosting company, took everything down, waited. Somebody at the hosting company apparently didn't know we'd scheduled the replacement, saw the machine was down, and brought it up again. Sigh. Finally they did the replacement, got it back up, but now we're seeing an ethernet port flapping, suggested they have someone go in and make sure all the jacks are fully seated, maybe one got loose when they were doing the disk switch. Bureacracy reared up again and we got the boilerplate "if there's a hardware issue suspected please boot into rescue mode and run the tests"... sigh...8

Maybe a stupid question but I can't seem to google the right words.
In Linux, how do I reference the same device (disk) through reboots? Like, there's no guarantee that /dev/sda1 will be the same device twice, right?
Like, if I have three or four disks and I want one for "backups", how do I choose that disk *every time*?4 -
I saved my uni work onto a floppy disk (2001) and walked a mile into university library to print it. When I got there and put it into the computer it had corrupted and the disk was unreadable! Luckily I had a back up on my computer so had to walk the mile back, saved again onto two different floppy disks this time and walked the mile back. This time I managed to print it and deliver the work 5 minutes before the deadline.

The moment when you short circuit a new 1TB disk because the the external disk case has on one side conductive bumpers (I think for ESD purpose) ... Who designs this shit? D:
-
So this is a story all about how:
I went from my brother being asked to clone the disk of old laptop to a new one. My m.2 ssd being held in with duct tape because of it and me having to run a tar command that took over 5 hours to complete.
So my bro got asked by a friends mom to help her with "PC Problems". In short the old laptop was barely useable and they ordered a new one on the reccomendations of my brother. Turns out the laptop he recomended shoud have had a 1tb hdd in it. Instead it had a 256gb m.2. Note: The old disk was 500GB.
So cloning wasnt possible. He then told me, that they also bought a regular sata ssd which was supposed to go in instead of the non present hdd. So I <-Want to emphasize on this! went to work.
Ordered a ssd in the right form factor.
Made a disk image of the old HDD.
Had to drill out the screw holding in my m.2 ssd as it was stuck.
Its now held in with a piece of kepton tape.
Wrote old disk's image on new disk.
It doesnt boot in new laptop.
Spend an evening trying to rebuild boot partitions.
Fuck it, lets install windows 10 (instead of 7) and copy all the shit over manually!
Lets buy office for 30$ on g2a as it would be a pain in the ass to explain the that its normally a subscription.
Previous rant happend.
Brought them the laptop yesterday telling them I did all the work.
I collect the ssd they ordered explaing i ordered the correct one and would take tis one for me.
Still had the 500GB img file of the disk and wanted to compress it in order to put some data back in place.
The tar command took over 5 hours to complete! I havent checked on it yet as I went to sleep. -

Not really a rant, but an observation. As programmers we get to create realities for computers through programs. There are some fundamentals, like IO, memory, disk...but the creative power is enormous.2

So macOS Sierra introduced the ability to sync sort-of important folders like 'Desktop' and 'Documents' between machines.
Nice idea until I forgot that the default of a lot of programs is to set up your project in the Documents folder, and that the project I was checking out from git had two 20G files. Okay, the machine I was working with at home had plenty of disk space.
Turns out my machine at work did not, and happily synced itself out of disk space, which has been causing all sorts of no-not-fun-at-all busy work this morning.1 -

I solemnly swear never to use the Fedora Media Writer tool ever again. I used it to create a bootable USB to install Ubuntu, and guess what, the setup opened fine, disk check gave no errors, but the setup always got stuck. So I created the bootable using Rufus and it worked like a charm.

I got a new computer recently. I got it with an evo 970. I tried installing the Samsung controller software so that I can view the health of the drive.
No go. Why?
Looked around and everywhere they are saying turn off raid. I checked in bios. Says my drive is not in a raid volume.
Okay, now what?
Look at manual of laptop maker. Says there is a mode that allows you to use either VMD or RAID on the drive. Apparently I was in VMD mode. I had already backed up the computer at this point. Yes, I suspected this was coming. So I changed the mode.
No boot.
Okay, I have Aomei backup and linux boot disk I made using Aomei. Linux boot disk won't boot... Well fuck.
Luckily I have my old computer and a Windows 10 install disk. I install Windows 10 again, install Aomei and proceed to try and restore.
4 hours later... I dunno how long. I went to bed.
Wake up and test.
No boot.
I try disk repair.
No go.
So I boot into Windows 10 install disk to look at partitions. 5 or 6 fucking partitions. It has installed 3 partitions into the space of one.
Delete all the fucking partitions. Cause fuck you!
Okay, lets try this again.
I make a window pe boot disk this time.
It boots.
I do restore while I am at work.
I get home.
No boot.
Check partitions and find only 2. Better than last time.
I try disk repair.
No go.
Search the net. Literally: "Aomei restore no boot"
Someone says, just assign drive letter with drive C using diskpart.
Seriously?! Disk repair couldn't figure this shit out by context?
Seriously doubting this solution.
Solution works...
Now, I am an engineer/programmer/computer genius. I have been learning how to fix this shit for over 30 years.
How the fuck is Joe Bloe ever going to fix an issue like this? I feel sorry for the technically un-inclined. I honestly don't know how neither Aomei nor Microsoft cannot solve restoring disk images by setting a drive letter. How did this not get backed up by Aomei? How did this not get detected as one of the most common problems with a disk restore? Why has this been a problem with Aomei restore for over 3 years? I love Aomei. It works most of the time. But this is terrible. The tech world is definitely a shit show at this point in time.
I also read that VMD actually makes the communication to the drive a bunch faster. Not sure if the samsung drivers do the same. So there may be a tradeoff. Oh well. I can see the temperature of my drives now! Woot!2 -

There is no system but GNU, and Linux is one of its kernels.
Sainthood in the Church of Emacs requires living a life of purity—but in the Church of Emacs, this does not require celibacy (a sigh of relief is heard). Being holy in our church means exorcizing whatever evil, proprietary operating systems have possessed computers that are under your control, or set up for your regular use; installing a holy (i.e., wholly) free operating system (GNU/Linux is a good choice); and using and installing only free software with and on the system. Note that tablets and mobile phones are computers and this vow includes them.
Join the Church of Emacs, and you too can be a saint!
People sometimes ask if St IGNUcius is wearing an old computer disk platter. That is no computer disk, that is my halo — but it was a disk platter in a former life. No information is available about what kind of computer it came from or what data was stored on it. However, you can rest assured that no non-free software is readable from it today.14 -

Remote uploading of pictures isn't that bad tbh, now it's easy to share multiple and high quality. It won't be down as much as the LLM. This service runs on the VPS itself. Uploading is bit slow, don't know why. Probably buffer size related why using async to write the file to the disk. Disk is SSD, that's not it. LLM's run on different servers.4 -

The end of today was extremely fun.
Imagine the surprise. I was importing a simple 8 GB big virtual machine into the Proxmox hypervizor.
First issue: It was in the Open Virtualization Format (.ova) for easy import into... most hypervizors... Not Proxmox, however.
But really, not that bad, there are ways around it. Create a blank virtual machine through the UI, scrap the disk you create, then extract the two disk QCOW2 files from the .ova file, which by itself is just a POSIX TAR archive. Then import them through the commandline.
...So I did just that. The larger of the two was about 8 GBs, the other just like... 50 MBs.
The larger imported fine. The smaller?
Color me surprised, when it created a FUCKING. 1. TB. LOGICAL. VOLUME.
...
That it then proceeded to try and fill full of zeros...
Oh yes, it was one of the fancy dynamic storage files that expand as space is needed.
...
Tomorrow, I'll have to try if I can export just the filesystem data into an individual, shrunken down, normal, plain, old disk. None of this fancy black magic shit.
...Also... I don't get why Proxmox doesn't support that... The filesystem was only a few megs big... Ugh.1 -

In a similar vein to @Awlex's story, I lost 800GB of anime in a disk head crash. To this day, I have no idea how it happened.
We were getting our house painted and so my anime hard drive was left untouched for about a month, and then when I tried to connect it I found the disk head had crashed.
And then, a second time when I had managed to amass another 400GB of anime and something went wrong while I was trying to delete some other folders through Ubuntu's GUI (yeah, I know) and my anime folder was accidentally shift-deleted. T-T
Now my collection is back up at 300GB and I only use command-line to delete multiple folders now. -

Dropping the terminal I could somehow force unmounting and wipe the disk. Had a BSOD in between. Catalina would still not install ("Failed to install pre boot volume"). Later erasing the disk got blocked by the kernel itself. Felt like trouble and it was: Next time I was greeted with a blinking folder containing a questionmark instead of the bitten Apple.
Last resort: Internet recovery. Installing El Capitan was said to take 7 hours so I took a USB time machine backup of latest Catalina. Installed it, but on reboot it get's stuck when progress bar is at 100%. But at least I've a working recovery again. Yeah, progress!5 -
What do you windows users out there use for full disk encryption? Anyone using anything else than bitlocker?
Asking for a friend or some silly excuse like that.10 -
(a slide acoustic guitar plays on the background and the cowboy starts speaking)
It was a dry october day, back in good old 2017. I had this job from a client that I never met and was doing some coding for money.
After days of no sleep, no food and no rest, I finally decided to take a nap so I paused my music.
It was at this moment I found out my machine was making funny noises. Like a dingo makin' a run from it's enemies with a whelping noise.
Clicked on my computer and tried to find an ol' file from the archive drive but the machine won't let me, sayin' the disk ain't ready yet.
I tried disk manager, disk scanner, whatever the tools at my disposal all in vain. Then I said what the hell, I'll just restart my machine and it'll be alright.
The machine rebooted but the disk was gone. It was dead like a deer I ran over. I was upset, but not aware of the calamity headin' my way.
In just a few days my other 2 disks died suddenly. The loss of data, all the effort, none of them mattered. I felt numb and decided it was time for a fresh start.
Plugged in a Windows install disk, started the sequence, a screen came up askin' me which damned and alive disk I wanna install the fresh OS. I had two same make and model SSD disks, chose the one thinkin' it was the Windows drive, hell it wasnt... It was with all "my documents", "downloads", "pictures" folders and now I had two SSD drives with two Windows installations and nothing else.
The folks in town took a dab at me for months, even the bartender of the salloon refused to give me a drink. Sayin' it was a matter of reputation...
Turned out the bastard who fried my disks was the Madde Dog PSU Tannen who had a bad temper so here I am, tellin' my story to milk breathers and cherishing old days of data...3 -
Spent an hour figuring out why my dd command did not actually rewrite the specific portion of disk, only to find out that the skip argument applies only to input file.
If one wishes to skip onto a specific address of the output file, seek is the argument they... seek.
Ugh, little things in life... -
That feeling when you insert the driver disk for a wireless adapter to find they actually do provide Linux drivers!!!!!
Nobody ever provides Linux drivers, this is a god send! Thank you!
That feeling when they don't compile correctly! Damn you! ASUS pls. Halp. You're so close to being amazing. -
Sooo I think my VPS slowly dying. Disk r/w performance has gone to shit - we're talking ~10MB/s write speed on a fucking SSD.
Is there any way to bring it back to life? Or should I just give up?
Note: I've been keeping this VPS alive for years because it only costs me 1 eur/month, and they don't have this offer anymore - it costs triple now, so I reeeeally don't want to lose that price.
Also, I'm using it as a DNS server (among other things), and I really like the IP address, so I don't really wanna lose that either...
What do?8 -
Two working days lost because of windows update: pc takes a lot of time to shut down .. lot of time to open .. when it opens it is very laggy because the windows update service is consuming my disk usage .. what is the hell is microsoft doing?
Is anyone else facing the same problem? Serious question here3 -
I'm going to my friend's house to download some stuffs for deepin. I thought his internet is faster than mine.
What I get is 😡😡😡
Note:- I did not abused him bcoz he gave me 500gb hard disk.1 -
Do you remember the question: How can I get the Counter Strike game in a Floppy disk? and.. what is done there they copied the shortcut into the floppy Lol2
-
Why should every single piece of shit software ever written for Windows has to update itself everytime windows updates itself !? 1 hr after i restarted my laptop after windows update, disk usage is still at 100% ! I like a fool am waiting on a 15GB update on a game.. and it isnt even starting..😭😭3

Can't download YouTube videos (disk read/write error) caused by another corrupted 1-year old SD card. Sucks when manufacturers/vendors don't include the chip's lifespan2

In MSSQL, can SELECT JOIN (SELECT ...) queries actually end up using disk space rather just RAM?
I ran one of those last week and now am wondering if that's the root cause of a huge DB file with a lot of unallocated space.
Seems it may just use an existing DB file and expand it (without cleaning it up afterwards) but not sure...
Any ideas on how so this works and well show to make it so disk space used for queries get cleaned up properly or easier to just shrink or remove without touching the DB file there's actually used for persistence?8 -
So I finally managed to hit full disk capacity. 0 free bytes.
WHY DO YOU NEED FREE SPACE TO UNINSTALL STUFF WTF15 -
Installing, updating or adding components to Visual Studio is so strange; there's no network traffic (after the "Acquiring" phase), not much CPU load and mostly low disk load. Yet the process moves more slowly than a Sophia Coppola movie.
How do they manage that? By inserting a Thread.Sleep(50) between every instruction?1 -
Today at work, I had to do a dry run of our new production environment config for our VM server.
So I setup ESXi in a vm in my workstation. Installed it it, no problem. Setup some VMs, still going good. Then my supervisor came and said I have to make some tweaks and use vCenter. I thought: meh, that came late but ok. Download the vCenter installer from our internal CDN and ran it. Sorry general config, blah blah blah. "Setup with embedded or external platform service controller?" -"Embedded" - "minimal requirements: 11GB ram, 250GB disk storage, 2 CPU cores". Well... Fuck me. My workstation specs: 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, 4 cores.
What the bloody fucking hell does this stuff need 250 GB disk space for?!
Well at least I've got a permanent upgrade for my workstation.1 -
i previously had Windows 10 and somehow my Windows was deleted so i installed Ubuntu and wiped the hard disk
can u suggest any full data recovery tool in linux from which i can recover the data i had in Windows.1 -
Well fuck you too windows, my disk is where it is suposed to be, even though the controller is broken. Even linux can still find it. Although it takes a while to load the actual transfer. Recovery of terrabites takes ages4
-
You know you're in shit when you take out the disk and put it in a new machine and rebuild the raid and lose all the data
-
Today's frustration: there is no linux tool which can sync to disk a specific file. Now you have syncit: https://github.com/agherzan/syncit . I will package it in archlinux (AUR). But really, how can such a small functionality not be available?1
-
I just attempted to download and install Android studio in Ubuntu VM of 25GB disk space allocated... AND IT STILL NEEDS MORE SPACE!!!1
-
!dev fuck the asshole who designed the final boss in resident evil village! Shooting this bitch is like shooting a fly off an elephant’s ass!!!! I’m about to fucking pull the disk out of the fucking console and smash it in shards!!! Playing hardcore difficulty btw. Fucking boss needs to be patched!!!!15

Any idea to get around the cluster storage limitation?
I have to train a model on a large dataset, but the limit I have is about 39GB. There is space on my local disk but I don't know if I can store the data on my computer and have the model train on the cluster resources.1 -
Me: I want to make all our application directories a separate virtual disk for easy resizeability
Project lead: Why? We have lvm!
I might stab somebody, myself included.6 -
ACHTUNG:
Always check pre-selected defaults!
Had to reinstall Xamarin from the VS2015 installer, and didn't catch the installer having the check boxes for "Windows Phone 8.1 SDK" ticked. Could there be any more complete and utter waste of disk space, with the possible exception of Justin Bieber videos? -
1) Reader Rabbit on an Apple IIGS in the late 80s. I might've been in Kindergarten. Found the boxes stored in an unreachable storage area at my dad's house recently. Knowing how he took care of things, it probably still works. He won't let me touch it.
2) Fast forward to early middle school, Ultima VII on an NEC desktop, 90s. That game was great but also a pain in the ass. Had to make a startup floppy disk to help with memory allocation and something else. Learned DOS things. For some reason the disk wouldn't work from one day to the next so would have to reconfigure it frequently. Also learned the hard way not to fork too much with autoexec.bat during this period. -
Friend: Bro copy the psd from my pendrive and make some edits save yours as v2
Me: Search for USB to USB C adapter....Disk doesn't mount...open disk utility and mount...try to make a duplicate file....This operation not Permitted

Anyone encountered issue with vanishing hdd space on Windows 7 ??
My father has this issue: amount of free and used space doesn't add up to the correct total. The problem slowly but steadily worsens.
I tried to help to the best of my systems knowledge but no cigar.
We checked sizes of everything with windirstat so we are somewhat sure that used space is calculated correctly.
We ran native disk cleaning, the trash is empty and pagefile is set to static size.
Honestly i ran out of ideas, last one is take a peek at the disk in something like gparted but i doubt I'll learn much.
I'm counting someone here will help me...
Google failed me, only devRant can save me now!14 -
Aah fuckin ubuntu setup,
I made a some free space from windows disk management for Ubuntu setup, afterwards the turned on ubuntu setup, it showed the free disk space as unusable!!!
I did something,i don't remember, and somehow I entirely erased my E:(contains all my media) Drive 🤦. I was also about to erase my D drive ( contains all my dev work and all).Than I stopped and will sort it later.
I always have my media backed-up on mulitple disks hence I didnt lose much. But Why the fuck does Ubuntu show empty space as unusable ?????2 -
Please help me!
I was trying to fix my fat32 partition with fsck because it had an input / output error.
It's fixed but now all files and folders are read only6 -
Error: Disk image full.
...
Not good on a production SMB server. Wasted 2 hours tracking the fault down....
Turns out the boss thought it would be a good idea to install syncing software as remote backup without telling anyone...
It wasn't remote :( -
Dahh. I wish 10 gig nics were standard, or at least way more common.
Being stuck with gigabit is a tad ridiculous in this day and age, it's maxed out by the average speed of a damn spinning disk.5 -
So yeah I just had Ubuntu show me two errors directly after startup, then claiming that there is a programming error in aptdaemon and then IntelliJ crashing because of a read-only FS.
After rebooting my VM im faced with a BusyBox prompt saying my disk is corrupted. Fuck VMWare. This is not the first time the disk in my VM got corrupted. -
Saw a bit of chat of Windows Defender being not such a bad free product... Is anyone here like me (and old enough to be in the tech world at the time) and miss Norton's products, _before_ it was taken over by Symantec?1

I'm a windows newby, any suggestion for cloning an ext4 disk partition?

"We can't install the latest Win 10 features and security improvement on your PC due to low disk space."
Time to clear up.
Should I delete my hands and feet too?

For my side project, I spend more time in thinking about other thinks like Hosting, Disk Space and RAM rather then actually building the application. Lol..fml

When you debug and notice that "myString".equals("myString") evaluates to false...and after an hour realize it's a 'Byte Order Mark', which of course Java doesn't handle properly. Ended up using BomInputReader from Apache commons, which made my life simpler.
If I ever want to inflict pain on other developers, I shall write files to disk with a byte order mark. 😂 -
An entirely sentient AI. Saved on a floppy disk.
People in the late 90s had quite the colourful imagination about the future...2 -
Tried 4 times to move the 'data disk' on home assistant to the ssd restoring my backup.
This last time I let it run for 5 days and it didn't fucking work
Decided to just say fuck it, reinstalled home assistant to the yellow, did NOT restore backup, and the move to data disk took 5 fucking minutes : |
After that I restored my backup which took only another 5 minutes and now everything is just working. really wish the instructions suggested moving the data disk before restoring so I wouldn't have wasted my fucking time.
Like fuck am I the only one who had this issue? -
Quest.com APM software. Foglight. Terrible support site, terrible product, everything is terrible. Support engineers that still need to be explained the difference between disk space and inodes....
-
Managed to free up a shit load of disk space on our application servers, just by cleaning out old and unnecessary backup archives and obsolete versions of WPF application files. I think I made the guys at infrastructure a favour today *feeling a bit smug now*
-
Teaching coworkers performance tuning, we have the memory enough that you don't need to write to disk... Really the data isn't Even a MB....
-
So in Seahorse (the Gnome secret manager) deleting the OpenSSH key doesn't just remove an identity from agent, it actually deletes the keyfile.
I should've treated that scary confirmation message more seriously.
Also, my obsessive full disk backups every Monday are totally worth the time.2 -
useful alias when you want to inspect what is taking up space on your disk - needs GNU du
alias duh='function _blah(){ du -ahcd 1 --time $1 | sort -h -r; };_blah'
$ duh /path/to/folder | less2 -
My collegue make remote assistance for our software, dedicated to doctors in Italy. A doctor had the hd completely full, so it can't update the software and he call my collegue angry, saying "i've an update error, is your fault!!!" etc...after my collegue explain him he had to free space on the disk because there is no space, he had a genial idea! he brought new laptop, worst than the other one, because of the free space on disk!2
-
@dfox I'm just wondering what are you guys saving on disk that your data is 50X the size of the app and seems to have no plans of shrinking in size? Are you guys literally saving every rant?5

i ran out of space on my local disk c drive out of 235 gb because of android studio, it literally says 0 bytes of free space and now i have to figure out how to migrate to d drive.....

trying to make a live usb disk. i took shots at random combinations from 2 usb sticks, 2 oses, different tools or technics on each os... each failed with a different outcome. then i realized i should have kept a failure matrix so that i don't try the same combinations, or can trace the roots of the problem.
each time i need to build a live disk, a part of me dies inside.6 -
I just finished replacing perl's builtin Storable with my own deranged take on it because I wanted to be more efficient about saving and loading snapshots of a VM to disk.
It was a resounding success, of course. But what am I doing with my life? -
update on the Lenovo shit laptop.
getting a new custom made laptop with better specs sadly had to give away 2gb video ram but I can live with that it also comes with a third disk so let the O's recommendations come.
specs will be in a comment3 -
I am working on a java project and I want to know where are compilers and interpreter stores machine code? According to this post https://interviewbit.com/blog/... Compilers store machine code in the disk storage but not an idea about the interpreter. Any suggestion5

Someone asked me to check on his Wordpress site. Can't upload media. 'Failure to write to disk' Updating fails too. Directory and file permissions are ok. Server has enough space. Cleared tmp. Any more ideas?8

Does anyone know of a simple facial recognition program that I could train locally on a set of people’s faces?
I’m tasked with culling through a few hundred photos to find ones of certain people. I need the originals taken off the network drive and copied to a hard-disk.1 -
iOS Storyboards in Xcode feels like Dreamveawer. This Autolayout and Safe Area shit doesn't make any sense. As for Xcode itself it's a monstrosity, looking forward to purging that and reclaim my disk space.

FUCK ANDROID SETTINGS. I wanted to find a single setting to change my default write disk. A SINGLE SETTING. I used it a few days ago, but android is winging about storage bullshit, so I want to change my default write disk. I should just be able to search it up online, or use the default search but MOST RESULTS ONLINE DONT EVEN WORK BECAUSE ANDROID IS SO FUCKING INCONSISTENT I SWEAR IF I CANT FIND ONE MORE SETTING DUE TO THIS FUCKING SEARCH I AM QUITTING ANDROID BECAUSE FUCK THIS. tldr fuck android settings I'm going to go make myself throw up because of how stressing this is bye2

I feel no motivation until we're past this fucked up hump and all the tech that is relevant and theory that was kind of crap remains the same and in the same foreground position and all the chommies die or go away.
I can't even finish the next line of code I know I already wrote to spawn a crap ton of md5 and file structure scans for quick disk vs disk inventory.
that i knew actually worked.
i mean if i hide proof this time period existed in teh fucking woods again they'd just use dogs to find it.
guess its time to make news.1 -
Aw the beauty of chroot
Now if only I knew how yo setup an efi partition and grub for a specific mounted disk img to a specific booy partition! -
I try to delete a partition from my sundisk Pendrive using GParted but when I do this I got the error that is shown in the image.
And If I try to use "fdisk" which run `sudo fdisk /dev/sda` following command it gives me ```welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.34).
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
Be careful before using the write command.
fdisk: cannot open /dev/sda: Read-only file system```
following error does that mean my pendrive permanently broke can anybody help me!9 -
Today I found out that memory =/= disk space...
I always referred to disk space as memory. Here's how a casual chat with my friend would be like:
Friend: Hey, you should get this game!
Me: How big is it? 50GB? I Don have enough memory on my laptop for that. -
Not enough disk space error..just when I am done writing code and unzipping the bigger dataset.
Angry me.
Hours later.. Now mounted 200Gigs to machine.
Feels like a boss.!
