I had a secondary Gmail account with a really nice short nickname (from the early invite/alpha days), forwarded to another of my mailboxes. It had a weak password, leaked as part of one of the many database leaks.
Eventually I noticed some dude in Brazil started using my Gmail, and he changed the password — but I still got a copy of everything he did through the forwarding rule. I caught him bragging to a friend on how he cracked hashes and stole and sold email accounts and user details in bulk.
He used my account as his main email account. Over the years I saw more and more personal details getting through. Eventually I received a mail with a plaintext password... which he also used for a PayPal account, coupled to a Mastercard.
I used a local website to send him a giant expensive bouquet of flowers with a box of chocolates, using his own PayPal and the default shipping address.
I included a card:
"Congratulations on acquiring my Gmail account, even if I'm 7 years late. Thanks for letting me be such an integral part of your life, for letting me know who you are, what you buy, how much you earn, who your family and friends are and where you live. I've surprised your mother with a cruise ticket as you mentioned on Facebook how sorry you were that you forgot her birthday and couldn't buy her a nice present. She seems like a lovely woman. I've also made a $1000 donation in your name to the EFF, to celebrate our distant friendship"33
I was refactoring the most underneath part of our server code and just found 'getUserGender' method. I think for a second:We don't have this info. Look inside:
😑 it's surprising how much it works in Brazil.14
At python Brazil, just watched Sam Agnew live code an api to receive phone calls and control a Pokémon emulator8
Check this out.
Brazil is coming to a halt right now because of a distribution blockage by the truck drivers.
Gasoline tripled the litter price from yesterday.
Gas stations are going empty.
Air-fucking-ports are out of diesel/gas.
Public transportation might stop tomorrow.
And my boss "will consider" home office, wtf dude, are you retarded?14
"My wifi is low, can you speed it up?"
"Can you restore a document I deleted?"
"What? You're a programmer and can't even fix my washing machine?"
Brazil, but I think it's universal :/5
I'm new here and I want to introduce myself and meet you too.
My name is Mariana, I'm 21 years old and I live in Brasilia, capital of Brazil.
I'm a beginer in the world of development and I joined on this community to know more about this world. I am currently studying js, react and react native, but I am passionate about database, in the future I want to work with data science.
And you? Feel free to introduce yourself too! :)19
Wan't to hear my ridiculous recruiter story? I am originally from MA, and been on a small town since I was 4 (Born in Brazil). Well after years and years on the same town, always going back (MA) when a job here and there wouldn't work out. Going through some depression, and just got tired of everything. Well one day I found a recruiter on linkedIn and he knew a friend of mine. So he said he had a possible job offer but it was in Florida, anyhow he would later contact me and in the mean time for me to send him some examples of my work. Well in the mean time I packed my stuff and called him letting him know I was on the way. He was shocked and didn't know what to say. Went to the interview with him, got the job. 9 months later :) I don't regret taking my changes, it was all I had. I'm currently employed, love my job, and if it wasn't for my ridiculous recruiter... I don't know where I would have ended up. Long story, sorry /: ... here is a potato :) (9gag reference)11
Quick update on Brazil distribution strike
We are out of gas.
Government might call the army.
We might run out of water by Tuesday.
We are too much dependant on fossil fuels... Wtf?
In image: "Downloading now, if it's good, I give it 2 more stars." And never came back.
Here in Brazil, it's not hard to find this kind of review in almost every single app, unfortunately.6
If programming languages were countries, which country would each language represent?
Disclaimer: its just a joke
Java: USA -- optimistic, powerful, likes to gloss over inconveniences.
C++: UK -- strong and exacting, but not so good at actually finishing things and tends to get overtaken by Java.
Python: The Netherlands. "Hey no problem, let'sh do it guysh!"
Ruby: France. Powerful, stylish and convinced of its own correctness, but somewhat ignored by everyone else.
Assembly language: India. Massive, deep, vitally important but full of problems.
Cobol: Russia. Once very powerful and written with managers in mind; but has ended up losing out.
SQL and PL/SQL: Germany. A solid, reliable workhorse of a language.
Scala: Hungary. Technically pure and correct, but suffers from an unworkable obsession with grammar that will limit its future success.
C: Norway. Tough and dynamic, but not very exciting.
PHP: Brazil. A lot of beauty springs from it and it flaunts itself a lot, but it's secretly very conservative.
LISP: Iceland. Incredibly clever and well-organised, but icy and remote.
Perl: China. Able to do apparently almost anything, but rather inscrutable.
Swift: Japan. One minute it's nowhere, the next it's everywhere and your mobile phone relies on it.
C#: Switzerland. Beautiful and well thought-out, but expect to pay a lot if you want to get seriously involved.
R: Liechtenstein. Probably really amazing, especially if you're into big numbers, but no-one knows what it actually does.
Awk: North Korea. Stubbornly resists change, and its users appear to be unnaturally fond of it for reasons we can only speculate on.17
On October 24th, a client says he needs a "colorful and beautiful landing page for something" by November 1st.
I tell him "ok, but I need to know what contents you need me to put on this page".
It's already November 1st, yet no contents or anything to put into this landing page.
I bet they're going to send an e-mail at the very last minute telling me "put it online", without even a word of content.
Because this happened once.
Btw, tomorrow is a holiday here in Brazil.6
To the dear friends from Brazil, the stickers will come to you as well!
Thanks @dfox and @trogus!
(I didn't open it yet, because I'm showing off to my friends)9
WTF YOUTUBE, WTFFFFFFF!!!!!!
YOU PIECE OF SHIT MONEY HUNGRY SOULLESS CORPORATE CUNT OF A COMPANY.
I already hated all your shitty algorithms and your way of giving the middle finger to creators I love.
You want to be a trend following bitch and have "Stories" on users feeds, fine.
WHY THE FUCKING SON OF A CUNTIFICENT BITCH ARE YOU RECOMMENDING ME CHANNELS I KNOW NOTHING OF!!!!!!
Look at this shit... the fact that I am living in Brazil does not mean I give two fucks about youtubers here, I barely know the language.
I'M SUBSCRIBED TO 20 PEOPLE. IF THEY HAVE FUCKING STORIES, SHOW ME THEIRS. IF THEY DON'T, DON'T SHOW ME ANYTHINGGGGGGG.10
Today is Independence Day here in Brazil. Holiday n the middle of the week. I swear to not touch a computer today :P3
I'm doing a job for an advertising agency together with a designer and he sent a few mockups to the client without copying me or telling me he was doing it at all.
Then, suddenly, I receive a 1.5GB zip with a message saying: "client approved, here's everything".
Now I'm really pissed-off because:
- He told me he sent everything, but no images for headers, no text, nothing, nada besides the placeholders on the PSDs;
- It was 1.5gb for only 7 mockups (all other screens I think I'll have to get by osmosis);
- Designer and the client don't know shit about HTML/CSS/WordPress and took tons of decisions without consulting me (lots of impossible features);
- These mockups should've been sent to me last week because...;
- ...he **fucking promised** the client I'd deliver the project by Apr. 2nd;
But what leaves me pretty pissed off about it is that Mar. 30th is my birthday and, also, it's holiday in Brazil (Passion of Christ).
I'm not that religious, but I really wanted to rest and forget about the stress that's been building up in the last 3 months thanks to (not really) "good" work.
I'm pretty sure this prick and the client will spend this "extended" weekend somewhere having fun and resting while I'll have to build this piece of crap.
FML, for real.
I should have done something REALLY bad in a previous life to receive this.5
HOLY FUCKING COW! :D
Last year I had the best 4 months, professionaly, working on a startup here in Brazil. But due to management changes, I was laid off.
Since then I spent this time freelancing and doing odd-jobs, stressing myself and almost losing hope for good things.
Just now someone told me I was invited to an interview and return to the team again! Due to some indications! 😆✨
I couldn't be happier! But also really afraid of this interview!
But, oh boy! If it goes well, at least I'll be off the reds for a while! 😝 I'm SO happy because of that!
Going back to the team is also great! 😎4
Hmmmm. Just looked at my security log for my outlook account. A bunch of unsuccessful sync attempts... from China, from South Africa, from Colombia, from Poland, from Vietnam, and from Brazil. All of them IMAP attempts. Good to know my password isn't compromised, but I think I'm going to reset it and double it's length, just to be sure.3
2:17 AM, it's raining, I have opened my windows and still temperature is above 30 C.
Can't sleep and will have to convince my boss I haven't been drinking all night in the weekdays (don't know if he'll believe though).
Ah, almost forgot, there are also mosquitoes, besides biting you everywhere in your body there's the risk of contracting Zika, dengue and chikungunya.
That's why I *love* Brazil
**story if my life3
Anyone here from Brazil?
If so, please check this out: http://catarse.me/salvavidasapp
For those who aren't, let me explain: I started a crowdfunding project - because I want to make an app tp "prevent suicides".(there isn't one like this here in Brazil)
Why? In 2014 a classmate of mine took her own life. And since then, I had this idea. Since my last job ended (you can read about that in my previous rant...) I now would be able to try to do it.
Long story short, I'm utterly disappointed. Some of my friends helped sharing the news - I myself mailed over 3000 different reporters / news sites - all trying to get people to notice (and hopefully contribute) with the project.
But most of them? They didn't even clicked on the damn link I've sent them.
Almost half of the funding time gone, I only got 476 visits, and 1% of the goal. Out of the 3000 I wrote about, only *4* published a small story - and that was because of a friend, not those emails/forms I sent.
I tried posting everywhere I could on Facebook. Tried on foruns over the internet. Tried twitter, tried several universities (only the one I went helped - and half of the money raised is due to them)... everything I could think of - and nothing.
It's 5:30 AM here, and I can't sleep. I'm devastated.I knew it would be difficult to raise the cash - but not getting the news out and having so few people visiting the page... it hurts.2
Sitting here in Brazil watching everyone getting their stickers and knowing it will take at least 4 months to receive mine... 😬😤😒😓😓😭😭9
Revenue from ads going downhill and I can't release a new version of a game because it's tied to an event, and I can't even announce it yet.
Sent a proposal for a government grant. Deadline was Aug. 15th, but still no word on it - they didn't even updated the website, which by all means, still have the "send proposal" button active...
Meanwhile also developing another game, but I can't seem to decide on the music and sound fx for it. Can't find some style that will "fit".
Oh the joys of gamedev. :P
So I'm at Brazil Day in NY, took me $6 and 1.5hrs to get here but know what I'm here I feel spending $5 for street food snacks is too much... Like they're price gouging too far...
But in other contexts, I have no problem dropping $$$ for food... Pretty much daily...
I'm not sure how I should make sense of this or justify it. Maybe that's the difference between paying cash and swiping?3
Its hidden skill time.
At work, as a method of concentration I write code while singing gangnam style or some other similar song.
Perfectly and with no discernable accent even though i am Mexican American.
I also do it with Stromae songs(because I love french, not as much his music)
This is something that I learned in Portuguese class at hs :V which eventually led me to be able to survive conversations with my friends from Brazil without getting lost.
Languages are cool, just wish I was able to properly speak more. I love languages, but just stick to English and Spanish since those are the only ones that I speak fluently.
Wife speaks french, and she has tried teaching me even though I really can't get the hang of it just yet. Instead she showed me how to read it.
German and Japanese are on the list as well.7
You know you are addicted to devRant when in a Sweet Sixteen party (actually 15yo here in Brazil), you have a glass of Scotch, my daughter sleeping in my lags and are still browsing devRant...4
In the Global Blockchain Congress currently taking place in Kolkata, India, 'IT' officials from PWC India and IBM India start their speaks right after a popular cryptography professor from Belgium and a Blockchain entrepreneur from Brazil.
Every word these 'IT officials' uttered showed how shallow and business minded the IT managers and marketers are.7
Interviewer: what are things that you want to learn next.
Me (dumb): Maybe some functional language like Erlang
Man, I WAS nervous that day 😭3
I started Aeronautical Engeneering (yes I know, but I love Aviation). In second semester I saw Basic Programming, and then I realized that I had an ability in programming (comparing to my other fellows).
In third semester I was in "Static" class (vectors and a lot of physics) and I thought: "WTF am doing here, I don't know what can I do with a vector in real life." So I decided to switch to Systems Engeneering in other university (I think it had been always in my blood haha).
I saw one semester and this happened: I loved the career, but the university had an old-educational method that i hated. So i moved to another university, and I'm currently finishing at distance.
I'm just tired of university. I realized that the university is about 30%. The other 70% is experience (and of course a little from Stack Overflow hahaha).
Now, thanks to a lot of Google research and experience in various self projects, I'm here in Brazil working as a Web Developer.
I've learned 1000% more here than in the university.
And that's my short-four-years-story7
in brazilian portuguese you don’t say friday you say “hoje é dia de maldade” and i think that’s beautiful4
5y+ exp in react.
First commit is about 5y ago.
It's for a big startup in Brazil.
Way to scare of actual decent developers.3
In the 21st Century the problem is not to allow the use of Chemical & Biological Weapons & 'maybe' just 'maybe' achieve total nuclear disarmament (not in the next 120 years) It's not just the responsibility of the UK, USA, & France but that of every country that's a signatory of the conventions that banned the use of such weapons to intercept and retaliate against members that use such kind of weapons. From Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Brazil, China, India , Afghanistan, Butan, Taiwan, Iceland should use heavy force to stop the use of such weapons.1
Hi everyone! I'm new here and I'm from Brazil, is there any brazilians around??
Anyway, I hope to learn a lot here.

Brazil's president likes twitter. He is also a very dumb person:
Translation: what is golden shower?2
I don't know how things are outside Brazil, but I do wish I could pay for portuguese lessons for some of my clients, and also a bit of english too.
Reading their messages or e-mails just gives me head cramps, I tell ya.
I do make errors once in a while, but god damnit ALL their messages are trainwrecks!
Also, they want to use some jargons in english (because they think it sounds cooler, and I do agree that sometimes it's shorter and easier), but first they should put their efforts into a better use of portuguese language.
Really, I don't even know how some of them got past university, but they DID it, and it pains me to see that.
Though the pain isn't bigger than being told "hey, I don't understand much, but that's easy for you, right?" for whatever task they want me to do.
Here in Brazil we call flash drive's a "pendrive". Why? IDK. What do you call it in your country?20
Needing some career advice.
Hey guys I'm 21 years old and currently on my third year studying Information Systems. For the past two I've been working either on internships or freelancing, at this time I've worked on around 10 projects, some for big companies. During that time I managed to get experience on many languages and tools and although I'm no expert on any, I've gained confidence to approach problems better, analyze them and project solutions.
Right now I'm thinking about searching for a remote job, as I live in Brazil and salaries here are not good.
Any advice on getting a job?2
