I have what seems to be an unpopular opinion about buying software as a software developer.

First off, I support open source all the way. There should always be free and open tools for people to use if the need or want to.

Second, if you underpaid, broke, unemployed, or a student then this doesn’t apply to you. You keep pushing forward!

With that said, let’s get to the meat of it all...

I pay for good software. Even when it is expensive. Even when there are “workable” free or open source solutions.

I do this for a number of reasons...

1. They are better, hands down.
(Tower > GitKraken, SourceTree, GitHub Desktop) (Kalidascope > every other diff tool) (JetBrains IDEs > Atom, Brackets ...)

2. I’m no longer a broke student. I make enough money to buy them.

3. Most important: I’m a fucking professional software developer, not a fucking joker.
- If I was a carpenter then I could always hammer nails with the back of my work boot. It’s free and paid for and will do the job. Instead I would buy a good hammer because I’d be a professional and not a fucking joker complaining about the price of the tools to do my job.

4. I use a Mac, sometimes Linux and NEVER Windows. Which means I have a platform that actually has useful apps built for developers who are willing to pay for it.

5. I don’t get caught up in developer circle jerks about how all development software should be open source and free.

0) vscode, it got significantly better after the latest updates and is very versatile
1) gitkraken, now i use sourcetree because of the jira integration but kraken is available for linux too so
2) scaleway, they provide really cheap servers for whatever you want, easy to install images (docker too)
3) protonmail, an encrypted mail service that works a lot better than gmail (tutanota is a close 2nd but has a weeb name)
4) telegram, if you can, tell your team to ditch slack, because telegram is a lot more lightweight and even if you dont, just the channels make it worth giving it a shot
5) steemit, a blockchain based website where the users write the articles, you can find some good reads there (and photography if you like that stuff)
6) a dildo because it wouldnt be a bindview content without out of context penile objects

I'm sick to death of hiring people from other companies and explaining GitFlow and why its useful (what are you people doing?).

Then watching them doing it wrong, pointing out its easier to use something like sourcetree. Which leads to "... well see, the terminal is just more efficient, tools like sourcetree are bloated".

Ok fair enough, well heres the deal i'll make with you, while using your "efficient tool", stop breaking our workflow and i'm fine for you to keep using it. Otherwise, stop being a dick and be a team player.

I spent 2 days of stack overflow, assistance, mental counselling, 5 stages of depression ... just to realize I had cloned half the project because of a stupid, useless, fucked up branch that had the balls to call itself MASTER!!!!! arrggg!!!!!

The good thing about these latest sourcetree updates is I finally am forced to learn git command line.

Latest update to Sourcetree for PC is a downgrade. Weird annoying quirks that weren't there before, driving me crazy. Back to Bash...?

I've never felt the need to use SourceTree, am I missing out on a lot? I use the terminal. Feel it's sufficient.

Why does Sourcetree even need 1.89GB of RAM?

Since gitkraken is turning into such a bitch, I've searched for alternatives once again, as usual none of the competitors still implemented a fraction of it, after so much time.

Sublime Merge looked promising, but then half the time fucks the history graph, fails to remove remotes and more funny stuff I don't want to mess with.

Github Desktop I didn't even try because it didn't seem to have any proper history graph to begin with.

For now ended up on sourcetree, though I really do miss having commit message and description be two separate inputs, have done the most basic merge for now, so it's a to be continued experience.

Mostly afraid of how it'll show merge conflicts and commit view, as from what I gathered it doesn't fullscreen when you click a commit, but instead shows an awkward small screen at the bottom of the graph split further in half with the avatar and commit message.

Edit: oh for fucks sake, just noticed it doesn't even have linux support, god damn it.

That moment when you've been slaving away after hours and before work and you decide to push all your local code (at least only the last week's worth) to BitBucket. But because everything you know about Android Development and SourceTree is self taught you manage to delete not only your online repository but all your local code as well. fml

Used TFS for last 7 years and now have to use GIT. OMG Can't get my head wrapped around it. Everything is so confusing. Online articles don't help a beginner. Send help please. Started using Bitbucket with Sourcetree. Still learning. I hate to say this But I feel TFS is more intuitive. Maybe because I'm new to GIT.

Should I blame Windows or Sourcetree?

I stopped using SourceTree as soon as Atlassian got their dirty paws on them because I knew they wouldn't be able to resist ruining it.

Fast forward just over 7 years. I'm forced to work in a Windows environment without my usual git tooling so I see what options I have out there for making life a bit easier. I see SourceTree is still free - maybe I was being too cynical?

Download... install... first thing I see is this shit.

For the same reason I dropped Bitbucket so many years ago, thanks but no thanks. Fuck you Atlassian. Fuck you, fuck your "Atlassian account", and anything you own.

VS Code and SourceTree are two of the most used tool by me this year.

SourceTree helps me visualise the git commit history and branches more than git log can.

VS Code, on the other hand helps me with all the short code editing stuff and sometimes even helps when I don't want to open a full fledged IDE for the project. I have setup my own Icon themes for VS Code and even created watchers for files. Can't do this much on Webstorm so easily.

GitHub client or sourcetree?

I'm learning git and i must confess that i've been thinking about use sourcetree gui to make my commits, may be i'll try it tomorrow

Alright after upgrading to Monterey, I literally can't open a single repo without Sourcetree crashing. Any alternatives? What do ya'll like as a git GUI?

inb4 "learn the commands" - I want to carefully separate files (or even hunks) by ticket number and can't be bothered to type all the commands out

I've just discovered SourceTree.
I'm madly in love.

Something that absolutely drives me crazy is how there is no TreeView of my repositories in SourceTree... just the stupid scroll bar at the top! UGHH!!!

I can't tell if this is a windows sourcetree problem or mercurial, but trying to do anything on this is a pain. Every action takes 3-4 seconds (including switching between history and working copy).

My project is 10 commits and 50 files, this is a horrible ux. Bazaar never had this many problems.
