*Dev in his 40's from our counter-part office.
Me: Here's my SSH keys.
Dev: What's this?
Me: SSH keys. Give me access to the repository.
Dev: We don't use any version control here. Let's just use FTP or Remote Desktop and just download the codes.19 -
ON MONDAY
TL: Why the hell you require a month to integrate this engine?
Me: It will take that much time, can't help it.
TL: it can be done within a week.
Me: Then you do it.
TL: Ok I will show how it's done in a week.
ON FRIDAY
Me: What's the status on that integration?
TL: Oh yeah about that, you have to carry it ahead, I have some monitoring to do.
Me: Ok, give me the repository access, I will carry it ahead.

Apparently I, the Intern, am the only developer at this company with any experience with Version Control. My Boss just asked me for 'Documentation on how to create a Repository in GitHub'...

Yesterday I upgraded VS Code (insiders version, i.e daily/beta/etc) to the latest version and ran into a minor bug. I reported an issue in the Github repository, and 40 minutes later got a reply saying It was fixed and I can upgrade to the newest version.
Kudos on Microsoft and the VS Code team!5 -

I've just made an attempt to fix the Python repository in response to that ridiculous master/slave PR. Please support the issue! You can find it at https://github.com/python/cpython/.... Thanks!

Issue got immediately locked. I'll try my best to maintain a community fork at https://github.com/toloveru/cpython. Fucking pieces of shit they are.. seriously, if at all possible, do not use my repository. Just stop using Python altogether. This is madness.15 -

There is no greater feeling than, after you set up the repository with the first code files, your team mate changes the indentation and commenting style in every file to his own style without even discussing the general coding style rules in the group first.
Fucking awesome start.

TL;DR : do we need a read-only git proxy
Guys, I just thought about something and this potential gitpocalypse.
There is no doubt anymore that regardless of Microsoft's decisions about Github, some projects will or already have migrated to the competition.
I'm thinking : some projects use the git link to fetch the code. If a dependency gets migrated, it won't be updated anymore, or worse, if the previous repo gets deleted, it can break the project.
Hence my idea : create some repository facade to any public git repository (regardless of their actual location).
Instead of using github.com/any/thing.git, we could use opensourcegit.com/any/thing.git. (fake url for the sake of the example).
It would redirect to the right repository (for public read only), and the owner could change the location of the actual repository in case of a migration.
What do you think ? If I get enough ++'s, I'll create a git repo about this.6 -

Look at that. The very fucking smart colleague spent 40 days implementing a repository pattern (WHEN WE'RE USING AN ACTIVE RECORD ORM), breaking stuff left and right. Does he use that fucking pattern at the very least?
Of course he doesn't. And along the way he's making sure to create conflicts with the stuff he broke (and I'm fixing). By the time I fix the merge conflicts of one commit, he pushed 6 of them.9 -

I'm absolutely fed up with all documentation being tutorial-based these days! Well written documentation doesn't start with you creating a new project from scratch.
This is basically how all of Microsoft's documentation starts: Step 1 - Open Visual Studio. Step 2 - Create a new project...
I just checked out their WPF samples repository, and about 8 of the projects won't even compile. Absolutely ridiculous. There's 205 projects in the repository, and of course the one I need is on the list of those that won't compile.1 -

There was a workshop about git in our university and I was the teacher.
After teaching main concept of version control and git commands I was talking about open source community and github repository. First I should notice /pul/ in my language means money.

If you want developers to track of their hours (for grants etc) then that is fine.
If you require them in a to be in a markdown file in a repository then you are fucking up.

Had to fix an git-error today when the coworker checket out the repository. The culprit was a "\r" (CR) in a filename. None of us knew how this could have happened, but we think it happened when files were copied from windows to google drive and from there to a mac.

File hosting like GitHub?
Basically.. I want to let my Patreons download major updates to my game before I upload them to Github. Now, I will get a GitHub Developer upgrade once I get $7+ per month from Patreon, and host the updates on a private repository for a few days before uploading it to my main dev repository, but I something until then. Some place I can host the loose files, or a .zip at a static link for free. (that can only be accessed by that link) ^~^12 -
This moment you find a library/software on GitHub which actually does exactly what you looked for/tried to implement by yourself... Then you notice the last commit was in 2010 and there are 3000 open issues... Not a single one contains a response... the typical github repository...5

I'm curious...
I ended up in a job in which I'm the sole developer (state education databases). Good, well paying job. No complaints there, but I haven't been part of a Dev team since my college days almost 15 years ago. I keep up my skills in personal projects.
I use git, like most developers these days, to track my code and move it between my desktop and laptop. However, while I have a GitHub account, I tend to be very"shy" with my code. I usually won't start putting the repository online until the application I'm working on has its intended cute functionality at least... Functional.
That said, I've read articles that suggest developers should almost start their project repositories online right from the start.
My question is... Are there any others like me, holding back their code until it's functional, or do most of you code completely in public (for open source projects, anyway)?2 -

Why can't GitHub allow you to use a
`/Licenses/` folder for multiple licenses.
Example:
Using a `LICENSE` (AGPLv3 for software) and
`LICENSE-HARDWARE` (OpenHardware Permissive)
That's 'only' two, however there could be
more and regardless they only clutter the root..2 -
I had a small .NET PoC project I wanted to upload to our git server. So added the project to version control using Visual Studio, meaning that VS created a local repository for it. Then I wanted to push it to the remote repository which were created by my colleague. This one was initialized with a commit (.gitignore and Readme.md), so I couldn't push directly. Googled a bit, OK then tried to fetch the remote repo, didn't help. Googled again, tried some "git push origin master whatever" stuff and then rebate, because nothing seemed to help.
OOPS where are my local files? WTF? 😣
Long story short: Experience in other version control systems is not enough or even dangerous when switching over to git. 😂4 -
An idea for a website:
A page where you paste a github url and it clones the repository on the server and presents it to you with a IDE interface, lets you apply little changes and build it.
A "development environment as a service", in few words. Seriously, browsing github files is a pain and I can't obviously clone all the interesting projects I want to explore!7 -

GitHub Packages Sucks. Like, it REALLY sucks.
It sounds like the best thing in the world - being able to host your project packages alongside your code! It has full support for Maven, Gradle, Ruby Gems, Node packages, Docker images and even dotnet CLI applications. It even lets you view statistics on how many developers have downloaded a given package! For public repositories, the packages are free to host as well!
So, I decide to use it for my Maven project since it's "so great". I've never used a public Maven repository before, so this was all very new to me. I follow the documentation - simply run "mvn deploy ...." and use a generated GitHub personal access token. No problems there. Deployment is a success and I feel a wave of happiness seeing my packages online. I follow through the various links and it even adds automatically generated usage information for other Maven users - fantastic!
That was, until I decide to try and download one of the files from this package repository. In order to download a file, you must have a GitHub access token. Okay, makes sense I guess? What if another developer wants to use my library? To do so, they have to generate their own GitHub access token, store it in their local ~/.m2/settings.xml file and only THEN can they use my library. So clearly, this is significantly inferior to other public Maven repositories where you don't have to get an access token to simply USE a library.
Upon discovering this, I decide to simply delete all of the packages and continue using whatever previous system I was using. Except of course, they forbid the deletion of public packages because "other projects could depend on it". The only way to delete public packages is to either:
[0] Make the repository private (losing all stargazers and watchers), delete the packages and then make the repository public again
[1] Contact support and ask them to delete the public packages. They say that they'll only do this for "special cases", such as legal issues or GDPR breaches.
I've sent a contact form and I'm currently hoping that they see things in my favor. I mean seriously - a public package repository where in order to use it you have to have a GitHub account and then generate an authentication token - it's absurd!3 -
Everytime I find a new open repository, it is really humbling that there are so many projects with creative solution to problems.

I have a unreasonably large amount of commits just for these files in the repository.

Lesson learned. As a newbie to git and vcs in general, always verify a rebase to make sure you didn't accidentally delete your last days work before force pushing and overwriting the company repository. Also, don't get into a situation where you need to do that in the first place.

I saw someone posting a GitHub repository under their name. I looked into the repository and I thought that the repo is really cool and the person did a very good job creating this.
I went back to the repo later at night and found that it is a fork from a famous repo with over 2K stars. The thing is, the shared/forked repo has no changes from the original repo. So the person is sharing forked repos under their name just for internet praise! The fork got about 30 stars for nothing!!5 -

TLDR: A friend had only a local repository and fucked it up completly
A friend of mine had to do an project for school. Sche decided to do a little chat application. The requirements were to use java in combination of javafx.
Things started very well. Sometimes she asked me for a little help but that was no problem. She used mercurial for version control which was an inportant requirement too. But. The teacher didn't teach them how to use mercurial so all she had was a local repository. A few days ago she called me and told me that she fucked up the repository. I told her she should cerp calm and wait until i am at home. It's a fucking repository. this can be fixed i thought. But when i arrived at home and she sent me the repo i tried everything but a file (stored at .hg/store/) was missing. it was a manifest file. I asked her what happened to this file. "I deleted it because there were error messages because of it" FML. Why would you even delete such a file?
Luckily for her she sent me a copy of her repo to look at it a few days ago. so she only lost 5 commits.1 -

I'm having trouble using GitHub for Unity with a repository that I have associated with an organisation.
In GitKraken I have to authorise the app for it to be usable with the repository, but I can't seem to find any simple way to do this with GitHub for Unity.

!rant, but let me tell you this
I wanted to automate some tasks in work, because it started to be a pain in the ass, manually copying those assets took me between 30 - 50 min
let me see, I always wanted to check out python so I started to copy paste some code together, editing it and after a few hours all I know I have a tool which logs in to our work CMS download and unpacks a zip archive, creates a backup from the old files in the repository and moves the files I just downloaded in the repo, I put this in a loop for our twenty languages (websites) and its done
Im amazed, I never picked up a language this easy to use2 -

A database fetch. All rows at once. Not that many rows, maybe 50.

I've been doing code reviews for my team and other teams for quite a while now, but for one particular project I only just realised that they have separate repositories for the actual website, and a sandbox version. They're both identical with the exception of the sandbox repository having sandbox classes. So basically any changes done to the main repository also has to be copied into the sandbox repository, and its all done manually.
So I went around asking why there are 2 repositories and I just kept getting the answer because one is main, the other is sandbox. I asked why aren't they just combined into a single repository since sandbox is based on a server environment but everyone keep saying they don't know.
Projects without any form of planning can be scary and/or a total clusterfuck. -

What is the proper procedure for this?

Somewhat sad when team lead names a Sharepoint document library as ”a repo”.
I am not surprised. I am used to this level of incompetence. But…still.
I am aware of the generic nature of the meaning of the word repository. I just find it very sad that people with no actual competence try to make it look like they actually knows something.2 -

Hey guys,
I'm trying to convert a SVN repository to Git and I want to keep the history. <dependency>
<groupId>com.idontexist</groupId>
<artifactId>idontexist</artifactId>
<version>2.5.1</version>

It's amazing, because with this special type you can set a dependency that doesn't exist in any repository AND THE COMPILATION WORKS ANYWAY!!! It's very useful!!!!1 -
Goes to my comment on on of the rants to "Why linux cannot AVER be used by a normal user"
I'm pretty good with techs, OS, dev etc.
But here you go, a random error message which tells me nothing (Absolutelly nothing) and no way to fix it. No way to fix it, not even a hint where to look for solution, outside google. Sure, It took me around 5 minutes to find the problem googeling and copy/pasting some bash commands, but next time it happens and I don't have internet ? Well fucked.
This shit never happens on Wiondows or MacOs :) And that's why these 2 will always be user firendly ans linux will never be.
That's why linux will never be used by normal humains.
You 100% linux addict will point out directlly 'TYeah yours repos sources are fuckied" or whatever, but it IS NOT to user to know how sources, packages etc work. I want just update my system, if one source is not found, ignotre it by default ! How hrd is that ?
Error message in question :
E: The repository 'https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/tr... jammy Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

How do I know if there's a module for the problem I'm trying to solve? How do I know if there's a better module that solves the problem in a better way than the module I'm using? After I found the module, how can I use it if npmjs website contains just a skinny example and no explanation? Should I attend an advanced course for each module in repository?

Fighting to get a code repository up and running at my current company.
There is no central repository at all; people use their own local files and hope nobody else made changes. At least one product had to be retired because nobody could find the firmware source. I'm in need of advice. I reckon this is no stack overflow but that's probably for the best as I wouldn't feel as comfortable posting there as I am doing it here. So, back to the question: I'm currently working with legacy code, written in .NET 2.0. This code is responsible for calling upon PEC services in order to finally create personal smart cards. I was tasked with the job of creating a repository system that would allow the program to call on the old legacy services or the new ones without any distinction. We are talking about SOAP services in both cases. The issues is: the new service definition is comprised of soap policies. This wouldn't be a problem per se, with more modern version of the framework, but with .NET 2.0? Yes, it is. It doesn't support policies and signing the body with a certificate right out of the box. How can I manage this? I feel like the only way would be letting the proxy class do its thing up until the very last moment: intercept the SOAP request before its sent and modify it according to the specifications. But I reckon this is very bad practice. Is there any other way out of this?
Thanks for anyone that would like to help. 🙂6 -

Hi everyone, I’m trying to wrap my head around dev ops but struggling with the whole continuous integration workflow. From my understanding it goes something like the following:
1. pushing a change to some repository (git)
2. Some tool (Jenkins) tries to build it and if it’s succeed, creates a image /container (docker).
These containers are hosted on some cloud service (aws)
Some workflow, walkthrough, or examples would be very appreciate.7 -

Github be like:
Want control on your files? Host your own LFS!(This goes the same even for those who are buying their storage packs for boosting their LFS storage by giving money)
FUCK THIS SHIT... I am a poor student. I also don't have a fucking credit card!! Can't you improve your system instead of asking people to host their shit themselves?
Also, why do they even have access to deleting user files??!! They literally asked me to give a sha sum of files I want to restore so they can delete the rest as one option and providing hashes of files to be deleted as another.
And the hashes are not even secret(as the files are in an open repository).
Which means, if you have a large file on a public repository and animosity with a github staff, BOOM! That file is no more!!9 -
