So I have been merging loads of branches lately for our final release and now it’s affecting my dreams.
I sleep with two pillows, judge me I don’t care. One night I woke up screaming “Why won’t this merge?”
Everyone woke up and it took sometime for me to come to my senses. When my family switched on the light I saw one of my pillows partially shoved into my other pillow’s case.
I need a vacation.5 -
Multiple weird ones but one specifically where I fixed a bug over and over again and the second I pushed and deployed, the fix was gone both locally and remote.
I kept going more and more crazy and had rage attacks and such.
"Wait what, I changed and fixed this.. Let's try again"
"Huh, I definitely changed this..."
"Oh no, I fucking changed you"
"Go fuck yourself, I fixed this and pushed already, you can't just fucking disappear on me!"
"Oh yeah no of course, disappeared again, totally fucking logical. GET BACK HERE"
"I FIXED YOU A GAZILLION TIMES ALREADY, DON'T YOU DISAPPEAR ON ME AGAIN"
*NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. I. FUCKING. FIXED. YOU"
It went worse and worse for a while and then I woke up with a "....ahh" feeling 😅2 -
I was stuck with an architectural problem for a few days. Tried to solve it in many different ways. I could always do a quick hack and call it a day, but.. That's not pretty and it would be a trip wire for future developments.
Went to bed at ~2am. Took a few hours before I finally fell asleep. In my dream I was solving the same problem as in real life, except there I found an obvious and simple solution. Woke up at 8am, repeated that solution to myself a few times to not to forget it. Implemented it in the evening and it worked perfectly!
Moral of the story: do not work late. Better go to sleep, rest your mind. You might solve the problem while resting, and you will need a clear mind in the morning to remember and implement the solution :)
p.S. This happened to me more than once.2 -
Me: Requirements changed a lot since we first started. If we re-write a few sections of the app we can drastically reduce bugs, crashes, improve debug-ability etc.
PM: sure let me push back this unnecessary feature and you can do that next.
*woke up*
*cried at the thought of how amazing life would be* -
Had a bad dream about python, woke up screaming "THERES A PYTHON ON THE FLOOR"
My girlfriend was so confused because she's not a programmer2 -
Long story shot,
I was the coder of a time machine and a bug took me 10 minute to the past. 10 minutes later I got to the same bug and got teleported again. This continued a while. I woke up later.4 -
Maybe it's not exactly about programming, but sure damned it caused it.
Back in the day I managed to create a warcraft 3 map which played tetris. The orc peons ran down with faster and faster speeds, since it was a multiplayer, we used to play it with friends. We played it so much during the day, that all of the dreams were about orcs running and exploding once you finished your line. It was the only dream I remember having.2 -
I went to sleep immediately while taking a break from debugging and the dream was me debugging the same error the entire time. Then I woke up in my chair and resumed debugging3
-
Tekashi 69 was about to snitch on me for hacking and leaking data from the NSA and then I hit em with the...
return;6 -
One day I spent about 11h working on a project, that night I had a dream where I was trying to fix a bug that was in that project, so basically I spent 11h actually working and a few more in a dream.1

As a kid (in the 90s) I used to get a reoccurring nightmare that my family computer would get a blue screen of death and start screaming at me.
Legit hated computers as a kid because of that.2 -
Not me but my husband @WhAtEvErYoUmEaN keeps updating our pillows, doesn't like certain customer servers and tends to tell our cats to get a job/ point them to job counseling.4
-
Well I have a normal dream except I can see the people in it as an object with properties all over them. When they are in a bad mood I tried to debug them2
-
This night I dreamt that I could build indexes (yeah, boo me on the plural) for relalife things..trees, buildings, birds.. Everything gets an index, Oprah style!!!! And once last month I also dreamt I could debug real life things.. Look at the person and see what's wrong with them.. All their stats, bugs, everythiiiiing!! So disappointend when I woke up :(7

I normally just have nightmares about the projects I'm working on, especially when I struggle with a bug for days. Those are usually about just me stressing out about it. However, I have a lot of dreams about computers/technology, not necessarily coding-related:
- datacenters were just potato fields. If you go work the field, you'd go data mining
- in Biology, when being taught how having children works, you only tell that "parenting is only chmod-ing the rights of your children until they become the owners themselves"
- IP addresses with emojis instead of numbers were a standard now and they actually managed to replace IPv4, because everyone was so into emojis. They named it IPvE
- I witnessed a new Big Bang when the 32-bit Unix time overflown in 2038, and we were all quantum bits3 -
So once upon a time I had this dream while I was sleeping:
I was programming this videogame while I was inside of it.
It was something like VR where I had a tron-like world and I was the god in there, I was able to make and destroy anything as I pleased.
What I did was making a sort of challenge where you had to destroy someone else's kingdom by accessing it via FTP and then just destroy the useful files to kill defences and then become an actual king of that place.
Once awake I started thinking of making this whole thing into an actual game, but then I started reading the documentation for FTP connection in C# (I was thinking about using Unity) and literally stopped thinking about making it.2 -
I have a dream that someone will write completely free linux driver for AMD videocards
and for Nvidia too
and fixes OpenGL7 -
I dreamr of programming a AI DJ that mixes like David Guetta on steroids on specific dates
maybe something I should do for my capstone, might be a fun project for a company2 -
I never dream about tech (at least not specific) but recently I had a dream rotating around the fact that terminators (e.g. T-800) are safe to be stored on Windows 95 as they can only boot from NES cartridge.3
-
During my studies on the university, while preparing for the linear algebra exam I had a dream where I was a matrix in the Jordan normal form.5
-
We have a standalone api acting as a legacy adapter to our actual api, and as you can imagine it's a festering hellpit of hacks and workarounds which is not intended to be maintained after its EOL.
I recently had a dream - more of a nightmare - where our actual api had to support the legacy calls indefinitely.
I told our PO about it as a funny anecdote and he gave me 3 days off. -
I dream about discovering weird side effects on certain built-in functions way too often.
I usually implement those myself but without side effects. All in the dream. -
Not exactly a dream abour coding but my favorite instructor in college.
I dreamt the secret police came to arrest him on campus since his methods teaching cod were unorthodoxed.
As they were leading him away I was screaming and crying - “He’s the best teacher here, what are you doing!”
weird -
100 weeks is a long time, and I'm not even sure I'm gonna survive! But my roughly estimate is by:
- wk125; I've managed to live on my savings; Because I'll (try to) finish any project and just focus on my thesis.
- wk150; I've defended my thesis. Now I apply for PhD and get rejected.
- wk175; Begging for my last job to get hired again.
- wk200; Thanking myself for not buying bitcoins back then.
Probably I'll also manage to learn Go somewhere there.2 -
My weirdest dream about programming?
I was sitting with my buddy and we were programming, and literally, verbally arguing with compiler that he should compile, and he was spewing out different errors each time we compiled, and it somehow matched our arguments, so it literally was "replying" with different kind of errors ;-;
I mean, we didnt change code, but tell to compiler "no, no, no, you dont understand. This error is wrong, becouse here and there is this and that and it just should work" **pressed compile again and gets different errror**
Yes, that was after few nights of c++.
Edit:
yes, in that dream compiler was spewing out bullshit errors that didnt made sense.2 -
At my first programming job, the codebase was a tangle of legacy web forms, MVC, templates in a content-management-system, and AngularJS. Learning the CMS was particularly stressful.
One Saturday night, after binge-watching videos of DOOM 2 speedruns and mods, I had a dream that the Icon of Sin from DOOM 2 appeared in the code, gazed at me menacingly, and lunged at me before I woke up.1 -
I had this dream, We had to destroy this super mainframe who wanted some revenge because we as a programmers made a lot of mistakes in the code.
So we had to create this amazing machine with super powers and machine learning and then to go back to the past to save the world and to find me and protect me from the same machines that we created..
At the end, I died.. because the fucking machine betrayed me.1 -
About a month after I quit a job, I dreamed that I would still work there sometimes having to sit through bullshit meetings and such, but since I'm also lucid dreaming at some times it allowed me to really mess with my old colleagues 'virtually' haha...
-
In my graduation project, I used the Spring framework. I dreamt that everyone has an annotation on top of his head, and when anyone tried to talk with me, I wasn't able to understand him, so I started to scream : "Change the annotation !"
-
Had a particularly strange one about hose pipes flailing wildly but in a very specific pattern.
I’d been working on a bit of a monolithic multithreaded data pipeline and I couldn’t work out what I wanted to do with the thread pool. When I woke up I had a picture of those hose pipes, that basically how it now works😂 -
Been having dreams about being able to solve real world problems by solving/modeling with programming tools. Usually trying to fit some relationship or physical problem to a math/programming model. It always makes complete sense while working the problem. Then of course you wake up to a "WTF was that?"1
-
that time I finished an urgent ticket, without a keyboard, just by clicking on something on a big screen; stress, think too much and sleep little, is a bad combination
-
I haven't had a lot. But I recently had a dream that our site went down due to this extremely weird, rare bug. So I was at the office tell 4am the next morning. Not that weird.... Except I went into work the next day and wouldn't you know it, the site crashed and I didn't leave until almost midnight trying to fix it.
-
umm... all of my dreams are weird. and are a selection of random things that happened. the only two weird things that were in my dreams:
1. (long ago) NPM logo on a tablet-smartwatch hybrid in a dream that isn't related to programming
2. (recently) a level 1 dude in some 8-bitish game trying to get into a cathedral which is supposed to be entered late in the game, only to get his ass kicked by Grim Reaper and a Sims 3 notification popping up about the death of that dude. -
Weirdest dream i had about code, i was just coding all my social interactions; i'd have some kind of overlay over my vision and i'd have to type in my every move and sentence while going on about my day in a very gray and sluggish world as if i was just a programmer stuck inside my body, working with myself the way i work with a server.
Another time i actually found a bugfix in my sleep. I had wasted 8 hours on a dumb bug that day without managing to find a solution and when i woke up, all the code was in my head and it worked on the first try! -
Had a watchdogs type dream, but my profiler kept bugging up and I ended up in the bunker trying to fix it until I woke up. I no longer play that game
-
I once started developing a chatbot, super easy and simple, a MySQL backend for the QA stuff.
I then started to think on the most modular way to "reuse" the same QA system, and got stuck on it for around 3 days (while doing other things).
Obviously the chatbot stuff could'nt leave my thoughts , and I remember it was a saturday morning, I woke up super excited and just started writing down what my sleepy me was engineering while I was dreaming.
I still have the same system implemented and I'm expecting that some day, in the future, I'll have to rewrite it, and I hope "sleepy-me" helps me again, this time with an actual interesting solution haha -
One nightmarish project that was doomed from the beginning, had me as the sole developer. I could hardly sleep when we began testing on a separate test system, but with (nearly) all the config stored in shared memory and copied from the production system, I dreaded, half awake, that the production server data base connection was still configured in the test system and that it was shooting all it's test data repeatedly to prod.
Finally drove to company in middle of the night at 4 o'clock. Checked everything was OK, tried to sleep 3 hours before the start of the work day.
This system also had the most hideous memory corruption in some shared memory that was used across several processes and should have been thoroughly protected by a mutex, but somehow, sometimes this crucial map, that was used to speed up the access to all the customer data just contained garbage.
Still haunts me to that day. (Like xkcd's unresolved tension of a non-matching parenthesis - an unresolved bug. -
I had spent all night writing a series of nested loops, my dream was me circling in an old above ground pool like I would as a child. We used to try to make a whirlpool by trying to run along the wall.
