I work at a small company that uses very outdated coding approaches for their solutions.
About a year ago I went through our main application to improve performance and found quite a few areas that I could tackle such as using a dictionary data structure in place of (many) foreach loops that required to pull out a single object.
That specific change yielded a lot of improvement (you can only imagine) and the other developers wanted to learn the ways of dictionaries (because it was so revolutionary and new to them). I showed them many examples so that they could better understand this data structure.
Fast forward to a few months later, saw one of my coworker's code and noticed that they were using a dictionary... And iterating through each kvp similar to a foreach..... Wtf?!
P.S. that person's salary is much higher than mine :(

A guy who worked in my company before me "HARDCODED" the entire calendar for next 10 years starting 2016 in dictionaries and arrays in Python for a project.12 -

Short rant: I hate xcode, I hate Swift, I hate Apple.
After 3 weeks of intensive work (I'm an apprentice, part-student, part-worker), I was happy to go back to school and was like "Oh we're going to learn iOS, sounds cool !".
It is now friday, I have homicidal tendencies growing inside me, I want to cry whenever I hear xcode or swift.
Why in the hell I can't use a string argument when I'm calling a function NEEDING a string arg ?
Why do xcode take so long to tell me that there is a problem, why is the error message not explicit AT ALL ?
Why dictionaries so hard to manipulate, EVEN IN JAVA IT'S SIMPLIER.
Why putting our API call in specialized files make them run AFTER EVERYTHING ELSE and the solution that is given to us is deprecated since 5 years ?
Why is a classic c-style for loop is now deprecated ?
These are just a drop in the ocean of WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT that we came across this week.

Etc. you get the picture, it's the little things that get you through a Friday slog. -
Whyyy are dictionaries unordered in python. Fuuuck.
(Yes I know of OrderedDict, no you don't have to remind me - it is not a native data type, it is a module: argument over)8 -
Serious question for anybody who has dared to understand manager-speak: Do you know what a 'Task Rewind' is? We have it in our documentation, but google gives me no help as to what the hell it could mean.
...Or should I just take my original gut feeling and classify this as yet another word for the clown dictionaries?6 -
Fuck this I need to ventilate.
Thinking about job change because maintaining and extending 3 years old codebase (flask project) is FUCKIN exhausting. It was badly written since start by someone who obviously didn't know much about python. (Going by commit history.)
Examples:
- if var != None / if var == None
- if var is not None / if var is None (well..)
- Returning self-parsed obscure JSONs from dict variable
- Serializing dictionaries into database by str() (both sqlalchemy and mysql support JSON format) - THEY ARE ALMOST UNUSABLE OTHER WAY AROUND (luckily, python can deal even with that)
- celery tasks, the way they are called they BLOCK the whole flask (not bad in itself, but if connection breaks there are no errors, nothing it just hangs)
- obscure generator/yielding that contains return of flask's response in itself
- creating fifteen thousands of variables one by one where they would look so nicely as dict keys, and hey they are then both MANUALLY SERIALIZED into returning dict by "%s" (string formatting) [okey, some of them are objecst like datetime but MATE WTF]
- many, many more, PEP lint shall not pass
I would rather deal with fresh startup owners wanting me to program unicorns in one week then trying to extend and manage zombie-like projects.
Nothing personal against the firm I actually like the place.3 -
Why is fucking Chrome still not able to auto-hyphenate on Windows desktop?! Yeah I know the dictionaries, OS integration yadda yadda, BUT:
1) TeX did this 40 years ago, this is a solved problem in CS!
2) Firefox is a 3rd party application in Windows, just like Chrome, and can auto-hyphenate!2 -
Just started teaching my brother some programming. He is the type of guy that is always outside and almost never uses a computer.
So after teaching him a lot on dictionaries, ifs, etc. I ask him to make a dictionary app.
This is how he proceeds to name his variables:

(Note this is simplified C#)
This is after I told him a few times that you should name your variables so others can understand what they are.5 -

My problem with referring to my github:
I just found a project from almost two years ago where I exclusively use unordered arrays of key/value pairs as dictionaries.

Finally.... Spent over an hour trying to optimize ~5 lines of code... Guess it was a review on how to use primes for hasig but....
Root cause was I just needed a slightly faster hashing function...
1 test failed from timeout of like maybe 1sec. Test shows passed, then in details shows Timeout...

I just wasted a good half hour trying to figure out why my Python dictionary was in alphabetical order.
I’ve had issues with dictionary order before with 3.5, but that was more or less Python just wanting to put shit in the order IT wants, not alphabetical. And I haven’t had that in months, not since updating to 3.6.
Long story short, VS Code has decided to show me my dictionaries in alphabetical order when I hover over them while stepping code. If I do a print statement, it shows the dictionary in the correct order.
Seriously, you don’t need to do me any favors here.

Okay so I'm having trouble with JavaScript and this can apply to other languages but for now focus on JS. so I'm learning how to manipulate the DOM and I don't really know how to start I picked out a tutorial but I'm afraid I wont learn a lot from it. here are my concerns and yes they don't all have to do with the DOM

I just spent two days bson serialising a dictionary of dictionaries for mongodb in c#.
Finally got it running, hell yeah!! -
Optimization concepts/patterns or instances?
For pattern its gotta be any time i can take a O(n^2) and turn it into O(n) or literally anything better than O(n^2).
Instance would probably be the time that we took an api method that returned a json list made up of dictionaries CSV-style and changed it into a dictionary with the uid as the key and the other info as key-value pairs in a sub-dictionary. So instead of:

"Info":info
}
]
We now return:
{
name:
{
"Info": info
}
}
Which can, if done right, make your runtime O(1), which i love. -
That horrible moment when your 'documentation is something that happens to someone else' approach (due to lack of time) catches up with you and you have to go back and generate data dictionaries and diagrams on a deadline.
Gah -
They need to add a new definition of Eclipse to all dictionaries.
Taking away the light and joy of development out of the process.

At least 2 of those kvp iterations can be changed to a standard dictionary use

Besides all the other problems with js, I have to ask the experts:
What is the error or error classes commonly caused in javascript by conceptually treating prototypes or dictionaries as objects proper?
How or in what way does this hurt development as opposed to languages that make distinctions between prototypes and objects?8 -
Lua handles arrays and maps/dictionaries essentially the same way. Makes for a pain when binding to cpp. Shame in an otherwise awesome embedded lang

Using unity for a commission project:
Have a CCG-like setup, the cards inherit from Scriptable object, need to serialize a card inventory for the sake of persistence.
Attempt 1: XML serialization: get fucked, can't serialize dictionaries (what the hell)
Attempt 2: using data representation of the dictionary contents: get fucked, can't serialize Scriptable objects because they have to be handled by the engine...
Well okay, what if I use a Scriptable object to keep a persistent dictionary?
Attempt 3: Scriptable object with dictionary: get fucked, the dictionary didn't persist
Well now I'm starting to lose it, I've tried so many things, XML, Binary and JSon serialization, Scriptable objects, data representations, I'm really running out of ideas. I can only think of one more option: throw the Card objects into a Resources folder, an build a set of comma delimited strings to serialize. This is stupid.
Fuck Unity. Shit like this is why I'm making my own engine. Every week I find some new peeve, some new way that unity is full of redundancy and poor design, architectural flaws and workflow deficiencies. I don't know how much more of this I can take.2
